Surely, shall one say, in the LORD
have I righteousness and strength: even to him shall men come; and all that are incensed against him shall be
ashamed.
Surely they will say of Me, ‘In the LORD alone are righteousness and strength.’” All who
rage against Him will come to Him and be put to shame.
Hearken unto me, O house of Jacob, and all the
remnant of the house of Israel, which are borne by me from the
belly, which are carried from the
womb:
“
Listen to Me, O house of Jacob, all the
remnant of the house of Israel, who
have been sustained from the
womb, carried along since birth.
And even to your old age I am he; and even to
hoar hairs will I carry you: I
have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.
Even to your old age, I will be the same, and I will bear you up when you turn gray. I
have made you, and I will carry you; I will
sustain you and deliver you.
Calling a
ravenous bird from the east, the man that executeth my counsel from a far country:
yea, I
have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I
have purposed it, I will also do it.
I
summon a bird of prey from the east, a man for My purpose from a far-off land. Truly I
have spoken, and truly I will bring it to pass. I
have planned it, and I will surely do it.
I was
wroth with my people, I
have polluted mine inheritance, and given them into thine hand: thou
didst shew them no mercy; upon the ancient hast thou very
heavily laid thy yoke.
I was
angry with My people; I
profaned My
heritage, and I placed them under your control. You showed them no mercy; even on the elderly you laid a most heavy yoke.
Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy
sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail.
So take your stand with your spells and with your many
sorceries, with which you
have wearied yourself from your youth. Perhaps you will succeed; perhaps you will
inspire terror!
Thus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured, even thy merchants, from thy youth: they shall
wander every one to his quarter; none shall save thee.
This is what they are to you— those with whom you have labored and traded from youth— each one strays in his own direction; not one of them can save you.
Hear ye this, O house of Jacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, which
swear by the name of the LORD, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in righteousness.
“
Listen to this, O house of Jacob, you who are called by the name of Israel, who
have descended from the line of Judah, who
swear by the name of the LORD, who
invoke the God of Israel— but not in truth or righteousness—
I have declared the former things from the beginning; and they went forth out of my mouth, and I shewed them; I did them suddenly, and they came to pass.
I
foretold the former things long ago; they came out of My mouth and I proclaimed them. Suddenly I acted, and they came to pass.
I
have even from the beginning declared it to thee; before it came to pass I shewed it thee: lest thou shouldest say, Mine
idol hath done them, and my
graven image, and my
molten image, hath commanded them.
Therefore I declared it to you long ago; I
announced it before it came to pass, so that you could not claim, ‘My
idol has done this; my carved image and
molten god has ordained it.’
Thou hast heard, see all this; and will not ye declare it? I
have shewed thee new things from this time, even hidden things, and thou
didst not know them.
You have heard these things; look at them all. Will you not acknowledge them? From now on I will tell you of new things, hidden things unknown to you.
They are created now, and not from the beginning; even before the day when thou heardest them not; lest thou shouldest say, Behold, I knew them.
They are created now, and not long ago; you
have not heard of them before
today. So you cannot claim, ‘I already knew them!’
You
have never heard; you
have never understood; for a long time your ears
have not been open. For I knew how
deceitful you are; you
have been called a
rebel from birth.
Behold, I
have refined thee, but not with silver; I
have chosen thee in the furnace of
affliction.
See, I
have refined you, but not as silver; I
have tested you in the furnace of
affliction.
Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last.
Listen to Me, O Jacob, and Israel, whom I
have called: I am He; I am the first, and I am the last.
I, even I,
have spoken;
yea, I
have called him: I
have brought him, and he shall make his way prosperous.
I, even I,
have spoken;
yes, I
have called him. I
have brought him, and he will succeed in his mission.
Come ye near unto me, hear ye this; I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I: and now the Lord GOD, and his Spirit, hath sent me.
Come near to Me and
listen to this: From the beginning I
have not spoken in secret; from the time it happened, I was there.” And now the Lord GOD has sent me, accompanied by His Spirit.
O that thou hadst
hearkened to my commandments! then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea:
If only you had paid attention to My commandments, your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like waves of the sea.
Thy seed also had been as the sand, and the offspring of thy
bowels like the gravel thereof; his name should not
have been cut off nor destroyed from before me.
Your descendants would
have been as countless as the sand, and your offspring as numerous as its grains; their name would never be cut off or
eliminated from My presence.”
Then I said, I
have laboured in vain, I
have spent my strength for
nought, and in vain: yet surely my judgment is with the LORD, and my work with my God.
But I said, “I
have labored in vain, I
have spent My strength in
futility and vanity; yet My
vindication is with the LORD, and My reward is with My God.”
Thus saith the LORD, In an acceptable time
have I heard thee, and in a day of salvation
have I helped thee: and I will preserve thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause to
inherit the
desolate heritages;
This is what the LORD says: “In the time of favor I will answer You, and in the day of salvation I will help You; I will keep You and
appoint You to be a covenant for the people, to restore the land, to
apportion its
desolate inheritances,
Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for the LORD hath comforted his people, and will
have mercy upon his
afflicted.
Shout for joy, O heavens;
rejoice, O earth; break forth in song, O mountains! For the LORD has comforted His people, and He will
have compassion on His
afflicted ones.
Behold, I
have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.
Behold, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; your walls are ever before Me.
The children which thou shalt have, after thou hast lost the other, shall say again in thine ears, The place is too strait for me: give place to me that I may dwell.
Yet the children of your
bereavement will say in your hearing, ‘This place is too small for us; make room for us to live here.’
Then shalt thou say in thine heart, Who hath
begotten me these, seeing I
have lost my children, and am
desolate, a
captive, and removing to and
fro? and who hath brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; these, where had they been?
Then you will say in your heart, ‘Who has
begotten these for me? I was
bereaved and barren; I was exiled and rejected. So who has reared them? Look, I was left all alone, so where did they come from?’”
Thus saith the LORD, Where is the bill of your mother’s
divorcement, whom I
have put away? or which of my creditors is it to whom I
have sold you? Behold, for your
iniquities have ye sold
yourselves, and for your transgressions is your mother put away.
This is what the LORD says: “Where is your mother’s
certificate of
divorce with which I sent her away? Or to which of My creditors did I sell you? Look, you were sold for your
iniquities, and for your transgressions your mother was sent away.
Wherefore, when I came, was there no man? when I called, was there none to answer? Is my hand
shortened at all, that it cannot
redeem? or
have I no power to deliver? behold, at my
rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness: their fish stinketh, because there is no water, and dieth for
thirst.
Why was no one there when I arrived? Why did no one answer when I called? Is My hand too short to
redeem you? Or do I lack the strength to deliver you? Behold, My
rebuke dries up the sea; I turn the rivers into a desert; the fish
rot for lack of water and die of
thirst.
The Lord GOD hath opened mine ear, and I was not
rebellious, neither turned away back.
The Lord GOD has opened My ears, and I
have not been
rebellious, nor
have I turned back.
For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore
have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be
ashamed.
Because the Lord GOD helps Me, I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set My face like flint, and I know that I will not be put to shame.
Behold, all ye that
kindle a fire, that compass
yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that ye
have kindled. This shall ye
have of mine hand; ye shall lie down in sorrow.
Behold, all you who
kindle a fire, who
array yourselves with firebrands, walk in the light of your fire and of the firebrands you
have lit! This is what you will receive from My hand: You will lie down in a place of
torment.
And forgettest the LORD thy maker, that hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; and hast feared continually every day because of the
fury of the
oppressor, as if he were ready to destroy? and where is the
fury of the
oppressor?
But you
have forgotten the LORD, your Maker, who stretched out the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth. You live in terror all day long because of the
fury of the
oppressor who is bent on destruction. But where is the
fury of the
oppressor?
And I
have put my words in thy mouth, and I
have covered thee in the shadow of mine hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and say unto
Zion, Thou art my people.
I
have put My words in your mouth, and covered you with the shadow of My hand, to establish the heavens, to found the earth, and to say to
Zion, ‘You are My people.’”
These two things are come unto thee; who shall be
sorry for thee?
desolation, and destruction, and the famine, and the sword: by whom shall I comfort thee?
Thy sons
have fainted, they lie at the head of all the streets, as a wild bull in a net: they are full of the
fury of the LORD, the
rebuke of thy God.
Your sons
have fainted; they lie at the head of every street, like an
antelope in a net. They are full of the wrath of the LORD, the
rebuke of your God.
Thus saith thy Lord the LORD, and thy God that pleadeth the cause of his people, Behold, I
have taken out of thine hand the cup of
trembling, even the
dregs of the cup of my
fury; thou shalt no more drink it again:
Thus says your Lord, the LORD, even your God, who defends His people: “See, I
have removed from your hand the cup of
staggering. From that
goblet, the cup of My
fury, you will never drink again.
But I will put it into the hand of them that
afflict thee; which
have said to thy soul, Bow down, that we may go over: and thou hast laid thy body as the ground, and as the street, to them that went over.
I will place it in the hands of your tormentors, who told you: ‘Lie down, so we can walk over you,’ so that you made your back like the ground, like a street to be traversed.”
For thus saith the LORD, Ye
have sold
yourselves for
nought; and ye shall be redeemed without money.
For this is what the LORD says: “You were sold for nothing, and without money you will be redeemed.”
Now therefore, what
have I here, saith the LORD, that my people is taken away for
nought? they that rule over them make them to
howl, saith the LORD; and my name continually every day is
blasphemed.
And now what
have I here? declares the LORD. For My people
have been taken without cause; those who rule them
taunt, declares the LORD, and My name is
blasphemed continually all day long.
So shall he
sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.
so He will
sprinkle many nations. Kings will shut their mouths because of Him. For they will see what they
have not been told, and they will understand what they
have not heard.
All we like sheep
have gone
astray; we
have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
We all like sheep
have gone
astray, each one has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid upon Him the iniquity of us all.
Sing, O barren, thou that
didst not bear; break forth into singing, and cry
aloud, thou that
didst not
travail with child: for more are the children of the
desolate than the children of the married wife, saith the LORD.
“
Shout for joy, O barren woman, who bears no children; break forth in song and cry
aloud, you who
have never
travailed; because more are the children of the
desolate woman than of her who has a husband,” says the LORD.
For a small moment
have I
forsaken thee; but with great
mercies will I gather thee.
In a little wrath I
hid my face from thee for a moment; but with
everlasting kindness will I
have mercy on thee, saith the LORD thy
Redeemer.
For this is as the waters of
Noah unto me: for as I
have sworn that the waters of
Noah should no more go over the earth; so
have I
sworn that I would not be
wroth with thee, nor
rebuke thee.
“For to Me this is like the days of
Noah, when I
swore that the waters of
Noah would never again cover the earth. So I
have sworn that I will not be
angry with you or
rebuke you.
In righteousness shalt thou be established: thou shalt be far from oppression; for thou shalt not fear: and from terror; for it shall not come near thee.
In righteousness you will be established, far from oppression, for you will have no fear. Terror will be far removed, for it will not come near you.
Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy.
Behold, I
have created the
craftsman who fans the coals into flame and forges a weapon fit for its task; and I
have created the destroyer to
wreak havoc.
Behold, I have given him for a witness to the people, a leader and commander to the people.
Behold, I have made him a witness to the nations, a leader and commander of the peoples.
Let the wicked
forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will
have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly
pardon.
Let the wicked man
forsake his own way and the unrighteous man his own thoughts; let him return to the LORD, that He may
have compassion, and to our God, for He will freely
pardon.
Yea, they are
greedy dogs which can never
have enough, and they are
shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his gain, from his quarter.
Like
ravenous dogs, they are never satisfied. They are
shepherds with no
discernment; they all turn to their own way, each one seeking his own gain:
Among the smooth stones of the stream is thy portion; they, they are thy lot: even to them hast thou poured a drink offering, thou hast offered a meat offering. Should I receive comfort in these?
Your portion is among the smooth stones of the valley; indeed, they are your lot. Even to them you have poured out a drink offering and offered a grain offering. Should I relent because of these?
Upon a lofty and high mountain hast thou set thy bed: even thither wentest thou up to offer sacrifice.
On a high and lofty hill you have made your bed, and there you went up to offer sacrifices.
Behind the doors also and the posts hast thou set up thy
remembrance: for thou hast discovered
thyself to another than me, and art gone up; thou hast enlarged thy bed, and made thee a covenant with them; thou lovedst their bed where thou sawest it.
Behind the door and
doorpost you
have set up your
memorial.
Forsaking Me, you uncovered your bed; you
climbed up and opened it wide. And you
have made a
pact with those whose bed you
have loved; you
have gazed upon their nakedness.
You went to
Molech with oil and multiplied your perfumes. You
have sent your envoys a great distance; you
have descended even to
Sheol itself.
And of whom hast thou been afraid or feared, that thou hast
lied, and hast not remembered me, nor laid it to thy heart?
have not I held my peace even of old, and thou fearest me not?
Whom
have you
dreaded and feared, so that you
lied and failed to remember Me or take this to heart? Is it not because I
have long been silent that you do not fear Me?
For I will not
contend for ever, neither will I be always
wroth: for the spirit should fail before me, and the souls which I
have made.
For I will not
accuse you
forever, nor will I always be
angry; for then the spirit of man would grow weak before Me, with the breath of those I
have made.
I
have seen his ways, and will
heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him and to his mourners.
I
have seen his ways, but I will
heal him; I will guide him and restore comfort to him and his mourners,
Wherefore
have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore
have we
afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours.
“Why
have we fasted, and You
have not seen? Why
have we humbled ourselves, and You
have not noticed?” “Behold, on the day of your fast, you do as you please, and you
oppress all your workers.
Behold, ye fast for
strife and
debate, and to
smite with the
fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high.
Is it such a fast that I
have chosen? a day for a man to
afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a
bulrush, and to spread
sackcloth and ashes under him?
wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?
Is this the fast I
have chosen: a day for a man to deny himself, to bow his head like a reed, and to spread out
sackcloth and ashes? Will you call this a fast and a day acceptable to the LORD?
Is not this the fast that I
have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to
undo the heavy burdens, and to let the
oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?
Isn’t this the fast that I
have chosen: to break the chains of wickedness, to
untie the cords of the yoke, to set the
oppressed free and
tear off every yoke?
But your
iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins
have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.
But your
iniquities have built barriers between you and your God, and your sins
have hidden His face from you, so that He does not hear.
For your hands are
defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips
have spoken lies, your tongue hath
muttered perverseness.
For your hands are
stained with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips
have spoken lies, and your tongue mutters injustice.
The way of peace they know not; and there is no judgment in their goings: they
have made them
crooked paths:
whosoever goeth therein shall not know peace.
The way of peace they
have not known, and there is no justice in their tracks. They
have turned them into
crooked paths; no one who treads on them will know peace.
As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the LORD; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed’s seed, saith the LORD, from henceforth and for ever.
“As for Me, this is My covenant with them,” says the LORD. “My Spirit will not depart from you, and My words that I have put in your mouth will not depart from your mouth or from the mouths of your children and grandchildren, from now on and forevermore,” says the LORD.
And the sons of strangers shall build up thy walls, and their kings shall minister unto thee: for in my wrath I
smote thee, but in my favour
have I had mercy on thee.
Foreigners will rebuild your walls, and their kings will serve you. Although I struck you in anger, yet in favor I will show you mercy.
Whereas thou hast been
forsaken and
hated, so that no man went through thee, I will make thee an eternal
excellency, a joy of many generations.
For your shame ye shall
have double; and for confusion they shall
rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double:
everlasting joy shall be unto them.
Instead of shame, My people will
have a double portion, and instead of
humiliation, they will
rejoice in their share; and so they will
inherit a double portion in their land, and
everlasting joy will be theirs.
I
have set
watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the LORD, keep not silence,
On your walls, O Jerusalem, I
have posted
watchmen; they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the LORD shall take no rest for
yourselves,
The LORD hath
sworn by his right hand, and by the arm of his strength, Surely I will no more give thy corn to be meat for thine enemies; and the sons of the stranger shall not drink thy wine, for the which thou hast laboured:
The LORD has
sworn by His right hand and by His mighty arm: “Never again will I give your grain to your enemies for food, nor will foreigners drink the new wine for which you
have toiled.
But they that
have gathered it shall eat it, and praise the LORD; and they that
have brought it together shall drink it in the courts of my
holiness.
For those who harvest grain will eat it and praise the LORD, and those who gather grapes will drink the wine in My holy courts.”
I
have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will
tread them in mine anger, and
trample them in my
fury; and their blood shall be
sprinkled upon my garments, and I will
stain all my
raiment.
“I
have trodden the winepress alone, and no one from the nations was with Me. I
trampled them in My anger and
trod them down in My
fury; their blood
spattered My garments, and all My clothes were
stained.
For a short while Your people possessed Your holy place, but our enemies
have trampled Your sanctuary.
We are thine: thou never barest rule over them; they were not called by thy name.
We have become like those You never ruled, like those not called by Your name.
For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him.
From ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides You, who acts on behalf of those who wait for Him.
Thou meetest him that rejoiceth and worketh righteousness, those that remember thee in thy ways: behold, thou art
wroth; for we
have sinned: in those is continuance, and we shall be saved.
You
welcome those who
gladly do right, who remember Your ways. Surely You were
angry, for we
sinned. How can we be saved if we remain in our sins?
But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as
filthy rags; and we all do
fade as a leaf; and our
iniquities, like the wind,
have taken us away.
Each of us has become like something unclean, and all our righteous acts are like
filthy rags; we all wither like a leaf, and our
iniquities carry us away like the wind.
And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast
hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our
iniquities.
No one calls on Your name or strives to take hold of You. For You have hidden Your face from us and delivered us into the hand of our iniquity.
Thy holy cities are a wilderness,
Zion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a
desolation.
Your holy cities
have become a wilderness.
Zion has become a wasteland and Jerusalem a
desolation.
I
have spread out my hands all the day unto a
rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts;
All day long I
have held out My hands to an
obstinate people who walk in the wrong path, who follow their own imaginations,
Your
iniquities, and the
iniquities of your fathers together, saith the LORD, which
have burned incense upon the mountains, and
blasphemed me upon the hills: therefore will I measure their former work into their
bosom.
both for your
iniquities and for those of your fathers,” says the LORD. “Because they burned incense on the mountains and
scorned Me on the hills, I will measure into their laps full payment for their former deeds.”
And
Sharon shall be a fold of flocks, and the valley of
Achor a place for the herds to lie down in, for my people that
have sought me.
Sharon will become a pasture for flocks, and the Valley of
Achor a resting place for herds, for My people who seek Me.
For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things
have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a
contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.
Has not My hand made all these things? And so they came into being,” declares the LORD. “This is the one I will esteem: he who is humble and
contrite in spirit, who trembles at My word.
He that killeth an ox is as if he
slew a man; he that sacrificeth a lamb, as if he cut off a dog’s neck; he that offereth an
oblation, as if he offered
swine’s blood; he that burneth incense, as if he blessed an
idol.
Yea, they
have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations.
Whoever slaughters an ox is like one who slays a man;
whoever sacrifices a lamb is like one who breaks a dog’s neck;
whoever presents a grain offering is like one who offers pig’s blood;
whoever offers
frankincense is like one who blesses an
idol. Indeed, they
have chosen their own ways and delighted in their abominations.
Hear the word of the LORD, ye that
tremble at his word; your brethren that
hated you, that cast you out for my name’s sake, said, Let the LORD be
glorified: but he shall appear to your joy, and they shall be
ashamed.
You who
tremble at His word, hear the word of the LORD: “Your brothers who
hate you and
exclude you because of My name
have said, ‘Let the LORD be
glorified that we may see your joy!’ But they will be put to shame.”
And I will set a sign among them, and I will send those that escape of them unto the nations, to
Tarshish,
Pul, and Lud, that draw the bow, to
Tubal, and
Javan, to the isles
afar off, that
have not heard my fame, neither
have seen my glory; and they shall declare my glory among the Gentiles.
I will establish a sign among them, and I will send survivors from among them to the nations—to
Tarshish, Put, and the archers of Lud; to
Tubal,
Javan, and the islands far away who
have not heard of My fame or seen My glory. So they will
proclaim My glory among the nations.
And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that
have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be
quenched; and they shall be an
abhorring unto all flesh.
“As they go forth, they will see the corpses of the men who
have rebelled against Me; for their worm will never die, their fire will never be
quenched, and they will be a
horror to all mankind.”
Then the LORD put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth.
Then the LORD reached out His hand, touched my mouth, and said to me: “Behold, I have put My words in your mouth.
See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant.
See, I
have appointed you
today over nations and kingdoms to
uproot and
tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and plant.”
Then said the LORD unto me, Thou hast well seen: for I will
hasten my word to perform it.
“You
have observed correctly,” said the LORD, “for I am watching over My word to
accomplish it.”
And I will utter my judgments against them touching all their wickedness, who
have forsaken me, and
have burned incense unto other gods, and worshipped the works of their own hands.
I will
pronounce My judgments against them for all their wickedness, because they
have forsaken Me to burn incense to other gods and to worship the works of their own hands.
For, behold, I
have made thee this day a defenced city, and an iron
pillar, and
brasen walls against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against the princes thereof, against the priests thereof, and against the people of the land.
Now behold, this day I
have made you like a fortified city, an iron
pillar, and bronze walls against the whole land—against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the people of the land.
Thus saith the LORD, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?
This is what the LORD says: “What fault did your fathers find in Me that they
strayed so far from Me, and followed worthless idols, and became worthless themselves?
Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people
have changed their glory for that which
doth not profit.
Has a nation ever changed its gods, though they are no gods at all? Yet My people have exchanged their Glory for useless idols.
For my people
have committed two evils; they
have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and
hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.
“For My people
have committed two evils: They
have forsaken Me, the fountain of living water, and they
have dug their own cisterns— broken cisterns that cannot hold water.
The young lions
roared upon him, and
yelled, and they made his land waste: his cities are burned without inhabitant.
The young lions
have roared at him; they
have growled with a loud voice. They
have laid waste his land; his cities lie in ruins, without inhabitant.
Also the children of
Noph and Tahapanes
have broken the crown of thy head.
The men of
Memphis and Tahpanhes
have shaved the crown of your head.
Hast thou not procured this unto
thyself, in that thou hast
forsaken the LORD thy God, when he led thee by the way?
Have you not brought this on
yourself by
forsaking the LORD your God when He led you in the way?
Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast
forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.
Your own evil will discipline you; your own
apostasies will
reprimand you. Consider and
realize how evil and bitter it is for you to
forsake the LORD your God and to
have no fear of Me,” declares the Lord GOD of Hosts.
