For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.
For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing. They have no further reward, because the memory of them is forgotten.
Also their love, and their hatred, and their
envy, is now perished; neither
have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.
Their love, their
hate, and their
envy have already
vanished, and they will never again
have a share in all that is done under the sun.
This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me:
I have also seen this wisdom under the sun, and it was great to me:
There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as an error which proceedeth from the ruler:
There is an evil I have seen under the sun— an error that proceeds from the ruler:
I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.
I
have seen slaves on
horseback, while princes go on foot like slaves.
Remember now thy
Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw
nigh, when thou shalt say, I
have no pleasure in them;
Remember your
Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of
adversity come and the years approach of which you will say, “I find no pleasure in them,”
Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me: my mother’s children were
angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards; but mine own
vineyard have I not kept.
Do not
stare because I am dark, for the sun has
gazed upon me. My mother’s sons were
angry with me; they made me a keeper of the vineyards, but my own
vineyard I
have neglected.
I
have compared thee, O my love, to a company of horses in Pharaoh’s
chariots.
The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the
turtle is heard in our land;
The flowers
have appeared in the
countryside; the season of singing has come, and the
cooing of turtledoves is heard in our land.
Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that
spoil the vines: for our vines
have tender grapes.
Catch for us the foxes— the little foxes that ruin the vineyards— for our vineyards are in
bloom.
The
watchmen that go about the city found me: to whom I said, Saw ye him whom my soul loveth?
Thou hast
ravished my heart, my sister, my
spouse; thou hast
ravished my heart with one of thine eyes, with one chain of thy neck.
You
have captured my heart, my sister, my
bride; you
have stolen my heart with one
glance of your eyes, with one
jewel of your neck.
I am come into my garden, my sister, my
spouse: I
have gathered my
myrrh with my
spice; I
have eaten my
honeycomb with my honey; I
have drunk my wine with my milk: eat, O friends; drink,
yea, drink abundantly, O beloved.
I
have come to my garden, my sister, my
bride; I
have gathered my
myrrh with my
spice. I
have eaten my
honeycomb with my honey; I
have drunk my wine with my milk. Eat, O friends, and drink; drink freely, O beloved.
I
have put off my coat; how shall I put it on? I
have washed my feet; how shall I
defile them?
I
have taken off my
robe— must I put it back on? I
have washed my feet— must I soil them again?
Turn away thine eyes from me, for they
have overcome me: thy hair is as a flock of goats that appear from
Gilead.
Turn your eyes away from me, for they
have overcome me. Your hair is like a flock of goats streaming down from
Gilead.
The mandrakes give a smell, and at our gates are all manner of pleasant fruits, new and old, which I have laid up for thee, O my beloved.
The mandrakes send forth a
fragrance, and at our door is every delicacy, new as well as old, that I
have treasured up for you, my beloved.
We have a little sister, and she hath no breasts: what shall we do for our sister in the day when she shall be spoken for?
We have a little sister, and her breasts are not yet grown. What shall we do for our sister on the day she is spoken for?
I am a wall, and my breasts like towers: then was I in his eyes as one that found favour.
I am a wall, and my breasts are like towers. So I have become in his eyes like one who brings peace.
My
vineyard, which is mine, is before me: thou, O Solomon, must
have a thousand, and those that keep the fruit thereof two hundred.
But my own
vineyard is mine to give; the thousand shekels are for you, O Solomon, and two hundred are for those who tend its fruit.
Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the LORD hath spoken, I
have nourished and brought up children, and they
have rebelled against me.
Listen, O heavens, and give ear, O earth, for the LORD has spoken: “I
have raised children and brought them up, but they
have rebelled against Me.
Ah sinful nation, a people
laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they
have forsaken the LORD, they
have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.
Alas, O sinful nation, a people
laden with iniquity, a
brood of evildoers, children of
depravity! They
have forsaken the LORD; they
have despised the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on Him.
From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they
have not been closed, neither bound up, neither
mollified with
ointment.
From the sole of your foot to the top of your head, there is no soundness— only wounds and welts and
festering sores neither
cleansed nor
bandaged nor
soothed with oil.
Except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small
remnant, we should
have been as
Sodom, and we should
have been like unto
Gomorrah.
Unless the LORD of Hosts had left us a few survivors, we would
have become like
Sodom, we would
have resembled
Gomorrah.
Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am
weary to bear them.
I
hate your New Moons and your appointed feasts. They
have become a burden to Me; I am
weary of bearing them.
For they shall be
ashamed of the oaks which ye
have desired, and ye shall be confounded for the gardens that ye
have chosen.
Surely you will be
ashamed of the sacred oaks in which you
have delighted; you will be
embarrassed by the gardens that you
have chosen.
Therefore thou hast
forsaken thy people the house of Jacob, because they be
replenished from the east, and are soothsayers like the Philistines, and they please themselves in the children of strangers.
For You have abandoned Your people, the house of Jacob, because they are filled with influences from the east; they are soothsayers like the Philistines; they strike hands with the children of foreigners.
Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made:
Their land is full of idols; they bow down to the work of their hands, to what their fingers have made.
When a man shall take hold of his brother of the house of his father, saying, Thou hast clothing, be thou our ruler, and let this ruin be under thy hand:
A man will seize his brother within his father’s house: “You
have a
cloak—you be our leader! Take charge of this
heap of
rubble.”
In that day shall he
swear, saying, I will not be an
healer; for in my house is neither bread nor clothing: make me not a ruler of the people.
On that day he will cry
aloud: “I am not a
healer. I
have no food or clothing in my house. Do not make me leader of the people!”
The
shew of their countenance
doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as
Sodom, they hide it not.
Woe unto their soul! for they
have rewarded evil unto themselves.
The expression on their faces testifies against them, and like
Sodom they
flaunt their sin; they do not
conceal it.
Woe to them, for they
have brought
disaster upon themselves.
Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be given him.
Woe to the wicked;
disaster is upon them! For they will be repaid with what their hands
have done.
The LORD will enter into judgment with the ancients of his people, and the princes thereof: for ye
have eaten up the
vineyard; the
spoil of the poor is in your houses.
The LORD brings this charge against the elders and leaders of His people: “You
have devoured the
vineyard; the
plunder of the poor is in your houses.
When the Lord shall
have washed away the
filth of the daughters of
Zion, and shall
have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning.
when the Lord has washed away the
filth of the daughters of
Zion and
cleansed the bloodstains from the heart of Jerusalem by a spirit of judgment and a spirit of fire.
What could
have been done more to my
vineyard, that I
have not done in it? wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes?
What more could I
have done for My
vineyard than I already did for it? Why, when I expected sweet grapes, did it bring forth
sour fruit?
Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they
have no knowledge: and their honourable men are
famished, and their multitude dried up with
thirst.
Therefore as the fire devoureth the
stubble, and the flame consumeth the
chaff, so their root shall be as
rottenness, and their
blossom shall go up as dust: because they
have cast away the law of the LORD of hosts, and
despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
Therefore, as a tongue of fire consumes the straw, and as dry grass shrivels in the flame, so their roots will decay and their blossoms will blow away like dust; for they
have rejected the instruction of the LORD of Hosts and
despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
Then said I,
Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes
have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.
Then I said: “
Woe is me, for I am ruined, because I am a man of unclean lips dwelling among a people of unclean lips; for my eyes
have seen the King, the LORD of Hosts.”
And the LORD
have removed men far away, and there be a great
forsaking in the midst of the land.
until the LORD has driven men far away and the land is utterly
forsaken.
Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah, have taken evil counsel against thee, saying,
For
Aram, along with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah, has
plotted your ruin, saying:
The LORD shall bring upon thee, and upon thy people, and upon thy father’s house, days that have not come, from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah; even the king of Assyria.
The LORD will bring on you and on your people and on the house of your father a time unlike any since the day Ephraim separated from Judah—He will bring the king of Assyria.”
For before the child shall
have knowledge to cry, My father, and my mother, the riches of Damascus and the
spoil of Samaria shall be taken away before the king of Assyria.
For before the boy knows how to cry ‘Father’ or ‘Mother,’ the wealth of Damascus and the
plunder of Samaria will be carried off by the king of Assyria.”
And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that
have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that
peep, and that
mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?
When men tell you to
consult the spirits of the dead and the spiritists who
whisper and
mutter, shouldn’t a people
consult their God instead? Why
consult the dead on behalf of the living?
To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, they
have no light of
dawn.
The people that walked in darkness
have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light
shined.
The people walking in darkness
have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has
dawned.
Thou hast multiplied the nation, and not increased the joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men
rejoice when they divide the
spoil.
You
have enlarged the nation and increased its joy. The people
rejoice before You as they
rejoice at harvest time, as men
rejoice in dividing the
plunder.
For thou hast broken the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his
oppressor, as in the day of
Midian.
For as in the day of
Midian You
have shattered the yoke of their burden, the bar across their shoulders, and the rod of their
oppressor.
The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with
hewn stones: the sycomores are cut down, but we will change them into cedars.
“The bricks have fallen, but we will rebuild with finished stone; the sycamores have been felled, but we will replace them with cedars.”
The Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall
devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
Aram from the east and Philistia from the west
have devoured Israel with open mouths.
Despite all this, His anger is not turned away; His hand is still upraised.
Therefore the Lord shall
have no joy in their young men, neither shall
have mercy on their fatherless and widows: for every one is an
hypocrite and an
evildoer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
Therefore the Lord takes no pleasure in their young men; He has no
compassion on their fatherless and widows. For every one of them is godless and wicked, and every mouth speaks folly.
Despite all this, His anger is not turned away; His hand is still upraised.
Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write
grievousness which they
have prescribed;
Shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?
and as I have done to Samaria and its idols, will I not also do to Jerusalem and her idols?”
For he saith, By the strength of my hand I
have done it, and by my wisdom; for I am
prudent: and I
have removed the bounds of the people, and
have robbed their treasures, and I
have put down the inhabitants like a
valiant man:
For he says: ‘By the strength of my hand I
have done this, and by my wisdom, for I am
clever. I
have removed the boundaries of nations and
plundered their treasures; like a mighty one I subdued their rulers.
And my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the people: and as one gathereth eggs that are left,
have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or
peeped.
My hand reached as into a nest to seize the wealth of the nations. Like one gathering abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth. No wing
fluttered, no
beak opened or
chirped.’”
They are gone over the passage: they
have taken up their
lodging at Geba;
Ramah is afraid; Gibeah of Saul is fled.
They
have crossed at the
ford: “We will
spend the night at Geba.”
Ramah trembles; Gibeah of Saul flees.
And in that day thou shalt say, O LORD, I will praise thee: though thou
wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortedst me.
In that day you will say: “O LORD, I will praise You. Although You were
angry with me, Your anger has turned away, and You
have comforted me.
I
have commanded my
sanctified ones, I
have also called my mighty ones for mine anger, even them that
rejoice in my highness.
I
have commanded My
sanctified ones; I
have even summoned My warriors to
execute My wrath and
exult in My triumph.
Behold, I will
stir up the Medes against them, which shall not regard silver; and as for gold, they shall not delight in it.
Behold, I will
stir up against them the Medes, who
have no regard for silver and no desire for gold.
Their bows also shall
dash the young men to pieces; and they shall
have no
pity on the fruit of the
womb; their eye shall not
spare children.
Their bows will
dash young men to pieces; they will
have no mercy on the fruit of the
womb; they will not look with
pity on the children.
For the LORD will
have mercy on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in their own land: and the strangers shall be joined with them, and they shall
cleave to the house of Jacob.
For the LORD will
have compassion on Jacob; once again He will choose Israel and settle them in their own land. The foreigner will join them and unite with the house of Jacob.
Yea, the
fir trees
rejoice at thee, and the cedars of
Lebanon, saying, Since thou art laid down, no feller is come up against us.
All they shall speak and say unto thee, Art thou also become weak as we? art thou become like unto us?
They will all
respond to you, saying, “You too
have become weak, as we are; you
have become like us!”
How art thou fallen from heaven, O
Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which
didst weaken the nations!
How you
have fallen from heaven, O day star, son of the
dawn! You
have been cut down to the ground, O destroyer of nations.
Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, and slain thy people: the seed of evildoers shall never be
renowned.
You will not join them in burial, since you have destroyed your land and slaughtered your own people. The offspring of the wicked will never again be mentioned.
The LORD of hosts hath
sworn, saying, Surely as I
have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I
have purposed, so shall it stand:
The LORD of Hosts has
sworn: “Surely, as I
have planned, so will it be; as I
have purposed, so will it stand.
Therefore the abundance they
have gotten, and that which they
have laid up, shall they carry away to the
brook of the willows.
So they carry their wealth and belongings over the
Brook of the Willows.
Let mine outcasts dwell with thee, Moab; be thou a
covert to them from the face of the
spoiler: for the
extortioner is at an end, the
spoiler ceaseth, the oppressors are consumed out of the land.
Let my fugitives stay with you; be a refuge for Moab from the destroyer.” When the
oppressor has gone, destruction has ceased, and the oppressors
have vanished from the land,
We
have heard of the pride of Moab; he is very proud: even of his
haughtiness, and his pride, and his wrath: but his lies shall not be so.
For the fields of
Heshbon languish, and the vine of Sibmah: the lords of the heathen
have broken down the principal plants thereof, they are come even unto Jazer, they
wandered through the wilderness: her branches are stretched out, they are gone over the sea.
For the fields of
Heshbon have withered, along with the grapevines of Sibmah. The rulers of the nations
have trampled its choicest vines, which had reached as far as Jazer and spread toward the desert. Their shoots had spread out and passed over the sea.
Therefore I will
bewail with the
weeping of Jazer the vine of Sibmah: I will water thee with my tears, O
Heshbon, and Elealeh: for the
shouting for thy summer fruits and for thy harvest is fallen.
So I
weep with Jazer for the vines of Sibmah; I
drench Heshbon and Elealeh with my tears.
Triumphant shouts
have fallen silent over your summer fruit and your harvest.
And
gladness is taken away, and joy out of the
plentiful field; and in the vineyards there shall be no singing, neither shall there be
shouting: the treaders shall
tread out no wine in their presses; I
have made their
vintage shouting to cease.
Joy and
gladness are removed from the
orchard; no one sings or shouts in the vineyards. No one tramples the grapes in the winepresses; I
have put an end to the
cheering.
At that day shall a man look to his Maker, and his eyes shall have respect to the Holy One of Israel.
In that day men will look to their Maker and turn their eyes to the Holy One of Israel.
And he shall not look to the altars, the work of his hands, neither shall respect that which his fingers have made, either the groves, or the images.
They will not look to the altars they have fashioned with their hands or to the Asherahs and incense altars they have made with their fingers.
Because thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation, and hast not been mindful of the rock of thy strength, therefore shalt thou plant pleasant plants, and shalt set it with strange slips:
For you
have forgotten the God of your salvation and failed to remember the Rock of your refuge. Therefore, though you
cultivate delightful plots and set out cuttings from
exotic vines—
That sendeth ambassadors by the sea, even in vessels of bulrushes upon the waters, saying, Go, ye swift messengers, to a nation scattered and
peeled, to a people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out and
trodden down, whose land the rivers
have spoiled!
which sends couriers by sea, in
papyrus vessels on the waters. Go, swift messengers, to a people tall and smooth-
skinned, to a people widely feared, to a powerful nation of strange speech, whose land is divided by rivers.
In that time shall the present be brought unto the LORD of hosts of a people scattered and
peeled, and from a people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out and
trodden under foot, whose land the rivers
have spoiled, to the place of the name of the LORD of hosts, the mount
Zion.
At that time gifts will be brought to the LORD of Hosts— from a people tall and smooth-
skinned, from a people widely feared, from a powerful nation of strange speech, whose land is divided by rivers— to Mount
Zion, the place of the Name of the LORD of Hosts.
And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in the midst thereof; and I will destroy the counsel thereof: and they shall seek to the idols, and to the charmers, and to them that have familiar spirits, and to the wizards.
Then the spirit of the Egyptians will be
emptied out from among them, and I will
frustrate their plans, so that they will resort to idols and spirits of the dead, to mediums and spiritists.
The princes of Zoan are become fools, the princes of
Noph are
deceived; they
have also
seduced Egypt, even they that are the stay of the tribes thereof.
The princes of Zoan
have become fools; the princes of
Memphis are
deceived. The cornerstones of her tribes
have led Egypt
astray.
The LORD hath mingled a
perverse spirit in the midst thereof: and they
have caused Egypt to
err in every work thereof, as a
drunken man staggereth in his
vomit.
The LORD has poured into her a spirit of confusion. Egypt has been led
astray in all she does, as a
drunkard staggers through his own
vomit.
A
dire vision is declared to me: “The
traitor still betrays, and the destroyer still destroys. Go up, O
Elam! Lay siege, O Media! I will put an end to all her
groaning.”
Therefore are my loins filled with pain: pangs have taken hold upon me, as the pangs of a woman that travaileth: I was bowed down at the hearing of it; I was dismayed at the seeing of it.
Therefore my body is filled with
anguish. Pain grips me, like the pains of a woman in labor. I am
bewildered to hear, I am dismayed to see.
For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Go, set a
watchman, let him declare what he
seeth.
For this is what the Lord says to me: “Go, post a
lookout and
have him report what he sees.
O my
threshing, and the corn of my floor: that which I
have heard of the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel,
have I declared unto you.
O my people,
crushed on the
threshing floor, I tell you what I
have heard from the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel.
The burden of the valley of vision. What aileth thee now, that thou art wholly gone up to the housetops?
This is the burden against the Valley of Vision: What ails you now, that you have all gone up to the rooftops,
All thy rulers are fled together, they are bound by the archers: all that are found in thee are bound together, which have fled from far.
All your rulers have fled together, captured without a bow. All your fugitives were captured together, having fled to a distant place.
Ye
have seen also the breaches of the city of David, that they are many: and ye gathered together the waters of the lower
pool.
You saw that there were many breaches in the walls of the City of David. You collected water from the lower
pool.
And ye
have numbered the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses
have ye broken down to
fortify the wall.
You counted the houses of Jerusalem and
tore them down to
strengthen the wall.
Ye made also a
ditch between the two walls for the water of the old
pool: but ye
have not looked unto the maker thereof, neither had respect unto him that fashioned it long ago.
You built a
reservoir between the walls for the waters of the ancient
pool, but you did not look to the One who made it, or consider Him who
planned it long ago.
Be still, ye inhabitants of the isle; thou whom the merchants of Zidon, that pass over the sea,
have replenished.
Be silent, O dwellers of the coastland, you merchants of
Sidon, whose traders
have crossed the sea.
Be thou
ashamed, O Zidon: for the sea hath spoken, even the strength of the sea, saying, I
travail not, nor bring forth children, neither do I
nourish up young men, nor bring up virgins.
Be
ashamed, O
Sidon, the
stronghold of the sea, for the sea has spoken: “I
have not been in labor or given birth. I
have not raised young men or brought up young women.”
Is this your
joyous city, whose antiquity is of ancient days? her own feet shall carry her
afar off to
sojourn.
Is this your
jubilant city, whose origin is from antiquity, whose feet
have taken her to settle far away?
And he said, Thou shalt no more
rejoice, O thou
oppressed virgin, daughter of Zidon: arise, pass over to
Chittim; there also shalt thou
have no rest.
He said, “You shall
rejoice no more, O
oppressed Virgin Daughter of
Sidon. Get up and cross over to
Cyprus— even there you will find no rest.”
Therefore hath the
curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are
desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left.
Therefore a
curse has consumed the earth, and its inhabitants must bear the guilt; the earth’s dwellers
have been burned, and only a few
survive.
The
mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that
rejoice endeth, the joy of the
harp ceaseth.
The joyful tambourines
have ceased; the noise of revelers has stopped; the joyful
harp is silent.
O LORD, thou art my God; I will
exalt thee, I will praise thy name; for thou hast done wonderful things; thy counsels of old are faithfulness and truth.
O LORD, You are my God! I will
exalt You; I will praise Your name. For You
have worked wonders— plans formed long ago— in perfect faithfulness.
For thou hast made of a city an
heap; of a defenced city a ruin: a palace of strangers to be no city; it shall never be built.
Indeed, You
have made the city a
heap of
rubble, the fortified town a ruin. The fortress of strangers is a city no more; it will never be rebuilt.
For thou hast been a strength to the poor, a strength to the
needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall.
For You
have been a refuge for the poor, a
stronghold for the
needy in distress, a refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat. For the breath of the
ruthless is like rain against a wall,
And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we
have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the LORD; we
have waited for him, we will be
glad and
rejoice in his salvation.
And in that day it will be said, “Surely this is our God; we
have waited for Him, and He has saved us. This is the LORD for whom we
have waited. Let us
rejoice and be
glad in His salvation.”
In that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah; We
have a strong city; salvation will God
appoint for walls and bulwarks.
In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah: We have a strong city; salvation is established as its walls and ramparts.
