Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.
This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Consider carefully your ways.
Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith the LORD of hosts. Because of mine house that is waste, and ye run every man unto his own house.
You expected much, but behold, it amounted to little. And what you brought home, I
blew away. Why? declares the LORD of
Hosts. Because My house still lies in ruins, while each of you is
busy with his own house.
And the LORD
stirred up the spirit of
Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the
remnant of the people; and they came and did work in the house of the LORD of
hosts, their God,
So the LORD
stirred the spirit of
Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, as well as the spirit of all the
remnant of the people. And they came and began the work on the house of the LORD of
Hosts, their God,
Yet now be strong, O
Zerubbabel, saith the LORD; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the LORD, and work: for I am with you, saith the LORD of
hosts:
But now be strong, O
Zerubbabel, declares the LORD. Be strong, O Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. And be strong, all you people of the land, declares the LORD. Work! For I am with you, declares the LORD of
Hosts.
For thus saith the LORD of
hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will
shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land;
For this is what the LORD of
Hosts says: “Once more, in a little while, I will
shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land.
And I will
shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of
hosts.
I will
shake all the nations, and they will come with all their treasures, and I will fill this house with glory, says the LORD of
Hosts.
The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts.
The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine, declares the LORD of Hosts.
The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.
The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former, says the LORD of Hosts. And in this place I will provide peace, declares the LORD of Hosts.”
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Ask now the priests concerning the law, saying,
“This is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Ask the priests for a ruling.
In that day, saith the LORD of
hosts, will I take thee, O
Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel, saith the LORD, and will make thee as a
signet: for I have chosen thee, saith the LORD of
hosts.
On that day, declares the LORD of
Hosts, I will take you, My servant,
Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, declares the LORD, and I will make you like My
signet ring, for I have chosen you, declares the LORD of
Hosts.”
Therefore say thou unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Turn ye unto me, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith the LORD of hosts.
So tell the people that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Return to Me, declares the LORD of Hosts, and I will return to you, says the LORD of Hosts.’
Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom the former prophets have
cried, saying, Thus saith the LORD of
hosts; Turn ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings: but they did not hear, nor
hearken unto me, saith the LORD.
Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets proclaimed that this is what the LORD of
Hosts says: ‘Turn now from your evil ways and deeds.’ But they did not
listen or pay attention to Me, declares the LORD.
But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not take hold of your fathers? and they returned and said, Like as the LORD of hosts thought to do unto us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so hath he dealt with us.
But did not My words and My statutes, which I commanded My servants the prophets, overtake your fathers? They
repented and said, ‘Just as the LORD of
Hosts purposed to do to us according to our ways and deeds, so He has done to us.’”
Then the angel of the LORD answered and said, O LORD of
hosts, how long
wilt thou not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which thou hast had
indignation these
threescore and ten years?
Then the angel of the LORD said, “How long, O LORD of
Hosts, will You
withhold mercy from Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, with which You have been
angry these seventy years?”
So the angel that communed with me said unto me, Cry thou, saying, Thus saith the LORD of
hosts; I am
jealous for Jerusalem and for
Zion with a great jealousy.
Then the angel who was speaking with me said, “
Proclaim this word: This is what the LORD of
Hosts says: ‘I am very
jealous for Jerusalem and
Zion,
Therefore thus saith the LORD; I am returned to Jerusalem with
mercies: my house shall be built in it, saith the LORD of
hosts, and a line shall be stretched forth upon Jerusalem.
Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘I will return to Jerusalem with mercy, and there My house will be rebuilt, declares the LORD of Hosts, and a measuring line will be stretched out over Jerusalem.’
Cry yet, saying, Thus saith the LORD of
hosts; My cities through prosperity shall yet be spread abroad; and the LORD shall yet comfort
Zion, and shall yet choose Jerusalem.
Proclaim further that this is what the LORD of
Hosts says: ‘My cities will again overflow with prosperity; the LORD will again comfort
Zion and choose Jerusalem.’”
For thus saith the LORD of
hosts; After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which
spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye.
For this is what the LORD of
Hosts says: “After His Glory has sent Me against the nations that have
plundered you—for
whoever touches you touches the apple of His eye—
For, behold, I will
shake mine hand upon them, and they shall be a
spoil to their servants: and ye shall know that the LORD of
hosts hath sent me.
I will surely wave My hand over them, so that they will become
plunder for their own servants. Then you will know that the LORD of
Hosts has sent Me.”
And many nations shall be joined to the LORD in that day, and shall be my people: and I will dwell in the midst of thee, and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto thee.
“On that day many nations will join themselves to the LORD, and they will become My people. I will dwell among you, and you will know that the LORD of Hosts has sent Me to you.
Thus saith the LORD of
hosts; If thou
wilt walk in my ways, and if thou
wilt keep my charge, then thou shalt also judge my house, and shalt also keep my courts, and I will give thee places to walk among these that stand by.
“This is what the LORD of
Hosts says: ‘If you walk in My ways and keep My instructions, then you will
govern My house and will also have charge of My courts; and I will give you a place among these who are standing here.
For behold the stone that I have laid before Joshua; upon one stone shall be seven eyes: behold, I will
engrave the graving thereof, saith the LORD of
hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day.
See the stone I have set before Joshua; on that one stone are seven eyes. Behold, I will
engrave on it an inscription, declares the LORD of
Hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of this land in a single day.
In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, shall ye call every man his neighbour under the vine and under the fig tree.
On that day, declares the LORD of
Hosts, you will each
invite your
neighbor to sit under your own vine and fig tree.’”
Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto
Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of
hosts.
So he said to me, “This is the word of the LORD to
Zerubbabel: Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the LORD of
Hosts.
The hands of
Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the LORD of
hosts hath sent me unto you.
“The hands of
Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house, and his hands will complete it. Then you will know that the LORD of
Hosts has sent me to you.
I will bring it forth, saith the LORD of
hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the
thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name: and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall
consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof.
I will send it out, declares the LORD of
Hosts, and it will enter the house of the
thief and the house of him who swears falsely by My name. It will remain inside his house and destroy it, down to its timbers and stones.”
And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD:
And you are to tell him that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Here is a man whose name is the Branch, and He will branch out from His place and build the temple of the LORD.
And they that are far off shall come and build in the temple of the LORD, and ye shall know that the LORD of
hosts hath sent me unto you. And this shall come to pass, if ye will
diligently obey the voice of the LORD your God.
Even those far away will come and build the temple of the LORD, and you will know that the LORD of
Hosts has sent Me to you. This will happen if you
diligently obey the voice of the LORD your God.”
And to speak unto the priests which were in the house of the LORD of
hosts, and to the prophets, saying, Should I
weep in the fifth month, separating myself, as I have done these so many years?
by asking the priests of the house of the LORD of
Hosts, as well as the prophets, “Should I
weep and fast in the fifth month, as I have done these many years?”
Then came the word of the LORD of hosts unto me, saying,
Then the word of the LORD of Hosts came to me, saying,
Thus speaketh the LORD of
hosts, saying,
Execute true judgment, and
shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother:
“This is what the LORD of
Hosts says: ‘
Administer true justice. Show loving devotion and
compassion to one another.
Yea, they made their hearts as an
adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of
hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of
hosts.
They made their hearts like flint and would not
listen to the law or to the words that the LORD of
Hosts had sent by His Spirit through the earlier prophets. Therefore great anger came from the LORD of
Hosts.
Therefore it is come to pass, that as he
cried, and they would not hear; so they
cried, and I would not hear, saith the LORD of
hosts:
And just as I had called and they would not
listen, so when they called I would not
listen, says the LORD of
Hosts.
Again the word of the LORD of hosts came to me, saying,
Again the word of the LORD of Hosts came to me, saying:
Thus saith the LORD of
hosts; I was
jealous for
Zion with great jealousy, and I was
jealous for her with great
fury.
Thus saith the LORD; I am returned unto
Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth; and the mountain of the LORD of
hosts the holy mountain.
This is what the LORD says: “I will return to
Zion and dwell in Jerusalem. Then Jerusalem will be called the City of Truth, and the mountain of the LORD of
Hosts will be called the Holy Mountain.”
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; There shall yet old men and old women dwell in the streets of Jerusalem, and every man with his staff in his hand for very age.
This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Old men and old women will again sit along the streets of Jerusalem, each with a staff in hand because of great age.
Thus saith the LORD of
hosts; If it be marvellous in the eyes of the
remnant of this people in these days, should it also be marvellous in mine eyes? saith the LORD of
hosts.
This is what the LORD of
Hosts says: “If this is impossible in the eyes of the
remnant of this people in these days, should it also be impossible in My eyes?” declares the LORD of
Hosts.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will save my people from the east country, and from the west country;
This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “I will save My people from the land of the east and from the land of the west.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Let your hands be strong, ye that hear in these days these words by the mouth of the prophets, which were in the day that the foundation of the house of the LORD of hosts was laid, that the temple might be built.
This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Let your hands be strong, you who now hear these words spoken by the prophets who were present when the foundations were laid to rebuild the temple, the house of the LORD of Hosts.
But now I will not be unto the residue of this people as in the former days, saith the LORD of hosts.
But now I will not treat the
remnant of this people as I did in the past,” declares the LORD of
Hosts.
For thus saith the LORD of
hosts; As I thought to
punish you, when your fathers
provoked me to wrath, saith the LORD of
hosts, and I
repented not:
For this is what the LORD of
Hosts says: “Just as I resolved to bring
disaster upon you when your fathers
provoked Me to anger, and I did not relent,” says the LORD of
Hosts,
And the word of the LORD of hosts came unto me, saying,
Then the word of the LORD of Hosts came to me, saying,
Thus saith the LORD of
hosts; The fast of the fourth month, and the fast of the fifth, and the fast of the seventh, and the fast of the tenth, shall be to the house of Judah joy and
gladness, and
cheerful feasts; therefore love the truth and peace.
“This is what the LORD of
Hosts says: The fasts of the fourth, the fifth, the seventh, and the tenth months will become times of joy and
gladness,
cheerful feasts for the house of Judah. Therefore you are to love both truth and peace.”
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; It shall yet come to pass, that there shall come people, and the inhabitants of many cities:
This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Peoples will yet come—the residents of many cities—
And the inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, Let us go speedily to pray before the LORD, and to seek the LORD of hosts: I will go also.
and the residents of one city will go to another, saying: ‘Let us go at once to
plead before the LORD and to seek the LORD of
Hosts. I myself am going.’
Yea, many people and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of
hosts in Jerusalem, and to pray before the LORD.
And many peoples and strong nations will come to seek the LORD of
Hosts in Jerusalem and to
plead before the LORD.”
Thus saith the LORD of
hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the
skirt of him that is a
Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you.
This is what the LORD of
Hosts says: “In those days ten men from the nations of every tongue will
tightly grasp the
robe of a
Jew, saying, ‘Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.’”
The LORD of
hosts shall defend them; and they shall
devour, and
subdue with
sling stones; and they shall drink, and make a noise as through wine; and they shall be filled like
bowls, and as the corners of the altar.
The LORD of
Hosts will shield them. They will destroy and
conquer with slingstones; they will drink and
roar as with wine. And they will be filled like
sprinkling bowls,
drenched like the corners of the altar.
Mine anger was
kindled against the
shepherds, and I punished the goats: for the LORD of
hosts hath visited his flock the house of Judah, and hath made them as his goodly horse in the battle.
“My anger burns against the
shepherds, and I will
punish the leaders. For the LORD of
Hosts attends to His flock, the house of Judah; He will make them like His royal
steed in battle.
And the governors of Judah shall say in their heart, The inhabitants of Jerusalem shall be my strength in the LORD of hosts their God.
Then the leaders of Judah will say in their hearts: ‘The people of Jerusalem are my strength, for the LORD of Hosts is their God.’
And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land.
And on that day, declares the LORD of
Hosts, I will
erase the names of the idols from the land, and they will no longer be remembered. I will also remove the prophets and the spirit of impurity from the land.
Awake, O sword, against my
shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of
hosts:
smite the
shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.
Awake, O sword, against My
Shepherd, against the man who is My Companion, declares the LORD of
Hosts. Strike the
Shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered, and I will turn My hand against the little ones.
And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles.
Then all the survivors from the nations that came against Jerusalem will go up year after year to worship the King, the LORD of
Hosts, and to
celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles.
And it shall be, that
whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of
hosts, even upon them shall be no rain.
And should any of the families of the earth not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of Hosts, then the rain will not fall on them.
Yea, every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah shall be
holiness unto the LORD of
hosts: and all they that sacrifice shall come and take of them, and
seethe therein: and in that day there shall be no more the
Canaanite in the house of the LORD of
hosts.
Indeed, every pot in Jerusalem and Judah will be holy to the LORD of
Hosts, and all who sacrifice will come and take some pots and
cook in them. And on that day there will no longer be a
Canaanite in the house of the LORD of
Hosts.
Whereas
Edom saith, We are
impoverished, but we will return and build the
desolate places; thus saith the LORD of
hosts, They shall build, but I will throw down; and they shall call them, The border of wickedness, and, The people against whom the LORD hath
indignation for ever.
Though
Edom may say, “We have been
devastated, but we will rebuild the ruins,” this is what the LORD of
Hosts says: “They may build, but I will
demolish. They will be called the Land of Wickedness, and a people with whom the LORD is
indignant forever.
A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the LORD of
hosts unto you, O priests, that
despise my name. And ye say, Wherein have we
despised thy name?
“A son honors his father, and a servant his master. But if I am a father, where is My honor? And if I am a master, where is your fear of Me?” says the LORD of
Hosts to you priests who
despise My name. “But you ask, ‘How have we
despised Your name?’
And if ye offer the blind for sacrifice, is it not evil? and if ye offer the
lame and sick, is it not evil? offer it now unto thy governor; will he be pleased with thee, or accept thy person? saith the LORD of
hosts.
When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is it not wrong? And when you present the
lame and sick ones, is it not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you or show you favor?” asks the LORD of
Hosts.
And now, I pray you,
beseech God that he will be
gracious unto us: this hath been by your means: will he regard your persons? saith the LORD of
hosts.
“But ask now for God’s favor. Will He be
gracious? Since this has come from your hands, will He show you favor?” asks the LORD of
Hosts.
Who is there even among you that would shut the doors for
nought? neither do ye
kindle fire on mine altar for
nought. I have no pleasure in you, saith the LORD of
hosts, neither will I accept an offering at your hand.
“Oh, that one of you would shut the temple doors, so that you would no longer
kindle useless fires on My altar! I take no pleasure in you,” says the LORD of
Hosts, “and I will accept no offering from your hands.
For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the LORD of hosts.
For My name will be great among the nations, from where the sun rises to where it sets. In every place, incense and pure offerings will be presented in My name, because My name will be great among the nations,” says the LORD of Hosts.
Ye said also, Behold, what a
weariness is it! and ye have
snuffed at it, saith the LORD of
hosts; and ye brought that which was
torn, and the
lame, and the sick; thus ye brought an offering: should I accept this of your hand? saith the LORD.
You also say: ‘Oh, what a
nuisance!’ And you turn up your nose at it,” says the LORD of
Hosts. “You bring offerings that are
stolen,
lame, or sick! Should I accept these from your hands?” asks the LORD.
But
cursed be the
deceiver, which hath in his flock a male, and voweth, and sacrificeth unto the LORD a corrupt thing: for I am a great King, saith the LORD of
hosts, and my name is
dreadful among the heathen.
“But
cursed is the
deceiver who has an acceptable male in his flock and vows to give it, but sacrifices a defective animal to the Lord. For I am a great King,” says the LORD of
Hosts, “and My name is to be feared among the nations.
If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith the LORD of
hosts, I will even send a
curse upon you, and I will
curse your blessings:
yea, I have
cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart.
If you do not
listen, and if you do not take it to heart to honor My name,” says the LORD of
Hosts, “I will send a
curse among you, and I will
curse your blessings.
Yes, I have already begun to
curse them, because you are not taking it to heart.
And ye shall know that I have sent this commandment unto you, that my covenant might be with Levi, saith the LORD of hosts.
Then you will know that I have sent you this commandment so that My covenant with Levi may continue,” says the LORD of Hosts.
For the priest’s lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth: for he is the
messenger of the LORD of
hosts.
For the lips of a priest should preserve knowledge, and people should seek instruction from his mouth, because he is the
messenger of the LORD of
Hosts.
But ye are departed out of the way; ye have caused many to
stumble at the law; ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith the LORD of
hosts.
But you have departed from the way, and your instruction has caused many to
stumble. You have
violated the covenant of Levi,” says the LORD of
Hosts.
The LORD will cut off the man that doeth this, the master and the scholar, out of the tabernacles of Jacob, and him that offereth an offering unto the LORD of hosts.
As for the man who does this, may the LORD cut off from the tents of Jacob
everyone who is
awake and aware—even if he brings an offering to the LORD of
Hosts.
For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of
hosts: therefore take
heed to your spirit, that ye deal not
treacherously.
“For I
hate divorce,” says the LORD, the God of Israel. “He who divorces his wife covers his garment with violence,” says the LORD of
Hosts. So guard
yourselves in your spirit and do not break faith.
Behold, I will send my
messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the
messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of
hosts.
“Behold, I will send My
messenger, who will prepare the way before Me. Then the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to His temple—the
Messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight—see, He is coming,” says the LORD of
Hosts.
And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that
oppress the
hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the LORD of
hosts.
“Then I will draw near to you for judgment. And I will be a swift witness against sorcerers and adulterers and perjurers, against oppressors of the widowed and fatherless, and against those who
defraud laborers of their wages and deny justice to the foreigner but do not fear Me,” says the LORD of
Hosts.
Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return?
Yet from the days of your fathers, you have turned away from My statutes and have not kept them. Return to Me, and I will return to you,” says the LORD of Hosts. “But you ask, ‘How can we return?’
Bring ye all the
tithes into the
storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now
herewith, saith the LORD of
hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.
Bring the full
tithe into the
storehouse, so that there may be food in My house. Test Me in this,” says the LORD of
Hosts. “See if I will not open the windows of heaven and pour out for you blessing without measure.
And I will
rebuke the
devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of
hosts.
I will
rebuke the
devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of your land, and the vine in your field will not fail to produce fruit,” says the LORD of
Hosts.
And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a
delightsome land, saith the LORD of
hosts.
“Then all the nations will call you blessed, for you will be a land of delight,” says the LORD of Hosts.
Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his
ordinance, and that we have walked
mournfully before the LORD of
hosts?
You have said, ‘It is
futile to serve God. What have we gained by keeping His requirements and walking
mournfully before the LORD of
Hosts?
And they shall be mine, saith the LORD of
hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will
spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.
“They will be Mine,” says the LORD of
Hosts, “on the day when I prepare My
treasured possession. And I will
spare them as a man spares his own son who serves him.
For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an
oven; and all the proud,
yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be
stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of
hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.
“For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace, when all the
arrogant and every
evildoer will be
stubble; the day is coming when I will set them
ablaze,” says the LORD of
Hosts. “Not a root or branch will be left to them.”
And ye shall
tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the LORD of
hosts.
Then you will
trample the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day I am preparing,” says the LORD of
Hosts.
That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,
deliverance from
hostile hands, that we may serve Him without fear,
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
And suddenly there appeared with the angel a great multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying:
And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them.
Then Levi
hosted a great
banquet for Jesus at his house. A large crowd of tax collectors was there, along with others who were eating with them.
And on the
morrow when he departed, he took out two
pence, and gave them to the
host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and
whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.
The next day he took out two
denarii and gave them to the
innkeeper. ‘Take care of him,’ he said, ‘and on my return I will repay you for any additional expense.’
And he that
bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.
Then the
host who invited both of you will come and tell you, ‘Give this man your seat.’ And in
humiliation, you will have to take the last place.
But when thou art
bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that
bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.
But when you are invited, go and sit in the last place, so that your
host will come and tell you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in front of
everyone at the table with you.
Then said he also to him that
bade him, When thou makest a
dinner or a
supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy
kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also
bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.
Then Jesus said to the man who had invited Him, “When you
host a
dinner or a
banquet, do not
invite your friends or brothers or relatives or rich neighbors. Otherwise, they may
invite you in return, and you will be repaid.
But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the
maimed, the
lame, the blind:
There they made him a
supper; and
Martha served: but
Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.
Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?
But God turned away from them and gave them over to the worship of the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: ‘Did you bring Me sacrifices and offerings forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
Because the
carnal mind is
enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
because the mind of the flesh is hostile to God: It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.
And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of
Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as
Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha.
It is just as Isaiah
foretold: “Unless the Lord of
Hosts had left us descendants, we would have become like
Sodom, we would have resembled
Gomorrah.”
Gaius mine
host, and of the whole church, saluteth you.
Erastus the
chamberlain of the city saluteth you, and Quartus a brother.
Gaius, who has
hosted me and all the church, sends you greetings.
Erastus, the city
treasurer, sends you greetings, as does our brother Quartus.
For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;
For He Himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has
torn down the dividing wall of
hostility And that he might
reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the
enmity thereby:
Once you were
alienated from God and were
hostile in your minds,
engaging in evil deeds.
Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have
persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men:
who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and drove us out as well. They are displeasing to God and hostile to all men,
Consider Him who
endured such
hostility from sinners, so that you will not grow
weary and lose heart.
Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is
enmity with God?
whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
You adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is
hostility toward God? Therefore,
whoever chooses to be a friend of the world renders himself an enemy of God.
Behold, the
hire of the labourers who have
reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by
fraud, crieth: and the
cries of them which have
reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of
sabaoth.
Look, the wages you
withheld from the workmen who
mowed your fields are crying out against you. The
cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of
Hosts.
