Berean Standard Bible BSB Bible
But if any man
hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and
smite him
mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of these cities:
If, however, a man hates his
neighbor and lies in wait, attacks him and
kills him, and then flees to one of these cities,
If one be found slain in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it, lying in the field, and it be not known who hath slain him:
If one is found slain, lying in a field in the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess, and it is not known who killed him,
Cursed be he that taketh reward to
slay an innocent person. And all the people shall say,
Amen.
‘
Cursed is he who accepts a
bribe to
kill an innocent person.’ And let all the people say, ‘
Amen!’
See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I
kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I
heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand.
See now that I am He; there is no God besides Me. I bring death and I give life; I wound and I
heal, and there is no one who can deliver from My hand.
And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of
slaying all the inhabitants of
Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they
chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned unto
Ai, and
smote it with the edge of the sword.
When Israel had finished
killing all the men of
Ai who had pursued them into the field and wilderness, and when every last one of them had fallen by the sword, all the Israelites returned to
Ai and put it to the sword as well.
And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they
slew them not.
So Joshua did this and delivered them from the hands of the Israelites, and they did not kill the Gibeonites.
And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Beth-horon, that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel
slew with the sword.
As they fled before Israel along the descent from Beth-horon to Azekah, the LORD cast down on them large hailstones from the sky, and more of them were killed by the hailstones than by the swords of the Israelites.
And afterward Joshua
smote them, and
slew them, and
hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.
After this, Joshua struck down and killed the kings, and he hung their bodies on five trees and left them there until evening.
And all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the
Amorites, which reigned in
Heshbon, whom Moses
smote with the princes of
Midian, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, which were dukes of Sihon, dwelling in the country.
all the cities of the plateau and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the
Amorites, who reigned in
Heshbon until Moses
killed him and the chiefs of
Midian (Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba), the princes of Sihon who lived in the land.
Balaam also the son of Beor, the
soothsayer, did the children of Israel
slay with the sword among them that were slain by them.
The Israelites also
killed the diviner
Balaam son of Beor along with the others they put to the sword.
Now if the
avenger of blood pursues him, they must not surrender the
manslayer into his hand, because that man
killed his
neighbor accidentally without prior
malice.
These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them, that
whosoever killeth any person at unawares might
flee thither, and not die by the hand of the
avenger of blood, until he stood before the congregation.
These are the cities appointed for all the Israelites and foreigners among them, so that
anyone who
kills a person
unintentionally may
flee there and not die by the hand of the
avenger of blood prior to standing trial before the assembly.
And they took two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb; and they
slew Oreb upon the rock Oreb, and Zeeb they
slew at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued
Midian, and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to
Gideon on the other side Jordan.
They also captured Oreb and Zeeb, the two princes of
Midian; and they
killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb and Zeeb at the winepress of Zeeb. So they pursued the Midianites and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to
Gideon on the other side of the Jordan.
And he beat down the tower of Penuel, and
slew the men of the city.
He also pulled down the tower of Penuel and killed the men of the city.
Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye
slew at
Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king.
Next,
Gideon asked Zebah and Zalmunna, “What kind of men did you
kill at
Tabor?” “Men like you,” they answered, “each one resembling the son of a king.”
And he said, They were my brethren, even the sons of my mother: as the LORD liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not
slay you.
“They were my brothers,”
Gideon replied, “the sons of my mother! As surely as the LORD lives, if you had let them live, I would not
kill you.”
And he said unto Jether his
firstborn, Up, and
slay them. But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth.
So he said to Jether, his
firstborn, “Get up and
kill them.” But the young man did not draw his sword; he was fearful because he was still a youth.
Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And
Gideon arose, and
slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels’ necks.
Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, “Get up and
kill us
yourself, for as the man is, so is his strength.” So
Gideon got up and
killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and he took the
crescent ornaments from the necks of their camels.
And ye are risen up against my father’s house this day, and have slain his sons,
threescore and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made
Abimelech, the son of his
maidservant, king over the men of
Shechem, because he is your brother;)
but you have risen up against my father’s house this day and
killed his seventy sons on a single stone, and you have made
Abimelech, the son of his
maidservant, king over the leaders of
Shechem because he is your brother—
That the cruelty done to the
threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid upon
Abimelech their brother, which
slew them; and upon the men of
Shechem, which aided him in the
killing of his brethren.
in order that the crime against the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come to justice and their blood be
avenged on their brother
Abimelech and on the leaders of
Shechem, who had helped him murder his brothers.
And
Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and
slew the people that was therein, and beat down the city, and
sowed it with salt.
And all that day
Abimelech fought against the city until he had captured it and
killed its people. Then he
demolished the city and
sowed it with salt.
And all the people likewise cut down every man his
bough, and followed
Abimelech, and put them to the hold, and set the hold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of
Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.
So each man also cut his own branch and followed
Abimelech. Then they piled the branches against the inner chamber and set it on fire above them,
killing everyone in the tower of
Shechem, about a thousand men and women.
Then he called
hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and
slay me, that men say not of me, A woman
slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.
He quickly called his
armor-bearer, saying, “Draw your sword and
kill me, lest they say of me, ‘A woman
killed him.’” So
Abimelech’s
armor-bearer ran his sword through him, and he died.
Then said they unto him, Say now
Shibboleth: and he said Sibboleth: for he could not frame to
pronounce it right. Then they took him, and
slew him at the passages of Jordan: and there fell at that time of the Ephraimites forty and two thousand.
they told him, “Please say
Shibboleth.” If he said, “Sibboleth,” because he could not
pronounce it correctly, they seized him and
killed him at the fords of the Jordan. So at that time 42,000 Ephraimites were
killed.
But his wife said unto him, If the LORD were pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burnt offering and a meat offering at our hands, neither would he have shewed us all these things, nor would as at this time have told us such things as these.
But his wife replied, “If the LORD had intended to kill us, He would not have accepted the burnt offering and the grain offering from our hands, nor would He have shown us all these things or spoken to us this way.”
And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and
slew thirty men of them, and took their
spoil, and gave change of garments unto them which
expounded the
riddle. And his anger was
kindled, and he went up to his father’s house.
Then the Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon,
killed thirty of their men, took their
apparel, and gave their clothes to those who had
solved the
riddle. And burning with anger,
Samson returned to his father’s house,
And they said unto him, We are come down to bind thee, that we may deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines. And
Samson said unto them,
Swear unto me, that ye will not fall upon me
yourselves.
But they said to him, “We have come down to arrest you and hand you over to the Philistines.”
Samson replied, “
Swear to me that you will not
kill me
yourselves.”
And they spake unto him, saying, No; but we will bind thee fast, and deliver thee into their hand: but surely we will not kill thee. And they bound him with two new cords, and brought him up from the rock.
“No,” they answered, “we will not
kill you, but we will
tie you up securely and hand you over to them.” So they bound him with two new ropes and led him up from the rock.
And it was told the Gazites, saying,
Samson is come
hither. And they compassed him in, and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all the night, saying, In the morning, when it is day, we shall
kill him.
When the Gazites heard that
Samson was there, they surrounded that place and lay in wait for him all night at the city gate. They were quiet throughout the night, saying, “Let us wait until
dawn; then we will
kill him.”
And
Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead which he
slew at his death were more than they which he
slew in his life.
Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines.” Then he pushed with all his might, and the temple fell on the lords and all the people in it. So in his death he
killed more than he had
killed in his life.
And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and
beset the house round about upon me by night, and thought to have slain me: and my
concubine have they forced, that she is dead.
And during the night, the men of Gibeah rose up against me and surrounded the house. They intended to
kill me, but they
abused my
concubine, and she died.
And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to
smite of the people, and
kill, as at other times, in the
highways, of which one goeth up to the house of God, and the other to Gibeah in the field, about thirty men of Israel.
The Benjamites came out against them and were drawn away from the city. They began to attack the people as before,
killing about thirty men of Israel in the fields and on the roads, one of which led up to
Bethel and the other to Gibeah.
And when the men of Israel retired in the battle, Benjamin began to
smite and
kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons: for they said, Surely they are
smitten down before us, as in the first battle.
the men of Israel would turn in the battle. When the Benjamites had begun to strike them down, killing about thirty men of Israel, they said, “They are defeated before us as in the first battle.”
The LORD killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up.
The LORD brings death and gives life; He brings down to
Sheol and raises up.
And she named the child I-chabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.
And she named the boy Ichabod, saying, “The glory has departed from Israel,” because the ark of God had been captured and her father-in-law and her husband had been killed.
Therefore they sent the ark of God to
Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to
Ekron, that the Ekronites
cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to
slay us and our people.
So they sent the ark of God to
Ekron, but as it arrived, the Ekronites
cried out, “They have brought us the ark of the God of Israel in order to
kill us and our people!”
So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it
slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.
Then the Ekronites assembled all the rulers of the Philistines and said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israel. It must return to its place, so that it will not
kill us and our people!” For a deadly confusion had
pervaded the city; the hand of God was heavy upon it.
And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.
Then the people said to Samuel, “Who said that Saul should not reign over us? Bring those men here so we can kill them!”
And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will
kill me. And the LORD said, Take an
heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the LORD.
“How can I go?” Samuel asked. “Saul will hear of it and
kill me!” The LORD answered, “Take a
heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.’
If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.
If he is able to fight me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and labor for us.”
And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to
defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who
killeth him, the king will
enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father’s house free in Israel.
Now the men of Israel had been saying, “Do you see this man who keeps coming out to
defy Israel? To the man who
kills him the king will give great riches. And he will give him his daughter in marriage and
exempt his father’s house from taxation in Israel.”
And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that
killeth this
Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this
uncircumcised Philistine, that he should
defy the armies of the living God?
David asked the men who were standing with him, “What will be done for the man who
kills this
Philistine and removes this disgrace from Israel? Just who is this
uncircumcised Philistine, that he should
defy the armies of the living God?”
And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.
The people told him about the offer, saying, “That is what will be done for the man who kills him.”
And I went out after him, and
smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his
beard, and
smote him, and
slew him.
I went after it, struck it down, and delivered the lamb from its mouth. If it reared up against me, I would
grab it by its fur, strike it down, and
kill it.
Your servant has
killed lions and bears; this
uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, for he has
defied the armies of the living God.”
Thus David prevailed over the
Philistine with a
sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the
Philistine and
killed him.
Therefore David ran, and stood upon the
Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the
sheath thereof, and
slew him, and cut off his head
therewith. And when the Philistines saw their
champion was dead, they fled.
David ran and stood over him. He
grabbed the
Philistine’s sword and pulled it from its
sheath and
killed him; and he cut off his head with the sword. When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran.
And as David returned from the slaughter of the
Philistine,
Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the
Philistine in his hand.
So when David returned from
killing the
Philistine, still holding his head in his hand,
Abner took him and brought him before Saul.
And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the
Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick.
As the troops were returning home after David had
killed the
Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel to meet King Saul with singing and dancing, with joyful songs, and with tambourines and other instruments.
Wherefore David arose and went, he and his men, and
slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king’s son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife.
David and his men went out and killed two hundred Philistines. He brought their foreskins and presented them as payment in full to become the king’s son-in-law. Then Saul gave his daughter Michal to David in marriage.
And Saul spake to
Jonathan his son, and to all his servants, that they should
kill David.
Then Saul ordered his son
Jonathan and all his servants to
kill David. But
Jonathan delighted greatly in David,
But
Jonathan Saul’s son delighted much in David: and
Jonathan told David, saying, Saul my father seeketh to
kill thee: now therefore, I pray thee, take
heed to
thyself until the morning, and
abide in a secret place, and hide
thyself:
so he
warned David, saying, “My father Saul intends to
kill you. Be on your guard in the morning; find a secret place and hide there.
For he did put his life in his hand, and
slew the
Philistine, and the LORD wrought a great salvation for all Israel: thou sawest it, and
didst rejoice: wherefore then
wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to
slay David without a cause?
He took his life in his hands when he struck down the
Philistine, and the LORD worked a great salvation for all Israel. You saw it and
rejoiced, so why would you sin against innocent blood by
killing David for no reason?”
Saul also sent messengers unto David’s house, to watch him, and to
slay him in the morning: and Michal David’s wife told him, saying, If thou save not thy life to night, to
morrow thou shalt be slain.
Then Saul sent messengers to David’s house to watch him and
kill him in the morning. But David’s wife Michal
warned him, “If you do not run for your life
tonight,
tomorrow you will be dead!”
And Saul sent the messengers again to see David, saying, Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may
slay him.
But Saul sent the messengers back to see David and told them, “Bring him up to me in his bed so I can kill him.”
And Saul said unto Michal, Why hast thou
deceived me so, and sent away mine enemy, that he is escaped? And Michal answered Saul, He said unto me, Let me go; why should I
kill thee?
And Saul said to Michal, “Why did you
deceive me like this? You sent my enemy away and he has escaped!” Michal replied, “He said to me, ‘Help me get away, or I will
kill you!’”
Therefore thou shalt deal kindly with thy servant; for thou hast brought thy servant into a covenant of the LORD with thee: notwithstanding, if there be in me iniquity,
slay me
thyself; for why shouldest thou bring me to thy father?
Therefore deal faithfully with your servant, for you have brought me into a covenant with you before the LORD. If there is iniquity in me, then
kill me
yourself; why should you bring me to your father?”
And the priest said, The sword of
Goliath the
Philistine, whom thou slewest in the valley of Elah, behold, it is here
wrapped in a cloth behind the
ephod: if thou
wilt take that, take it: for there is no other save that here. And David said, There is none like that; give it me.
The priest replied, “The sword of
Goliath the
Philistine, whom you
killed in the Valley of Elah, is here; it is
wrapped in a cloth behind the
ephod. If you want, you may take it. For there is no other but this one.” And David said, “There is none like it; give it to me.”
And the king said unto the
footmen that stood about him, Turn, and
slay the priests of the LORD; because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not
shew it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of the LORD.
Then the king ordered the guards at his side, “Turn and
kill the priests of the LORD, because they too sided with David. For they knew he was
fleeing, but they did not tell me.” But the king’s servants would not lift a hand to strike the priests of the LORD.
And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the
Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and
slew on that day
fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen
ephod.
So the king ordered Doeg, “You turn and strike down the priests!” And Doeg the
Edomite turned and struck down the priests himself. On that day he
killed eighty-five men who
wore the linen
ephod.
And
Abiathar shewed David that Saul had slain the LORD’S priests.
And
Abiathar told David that Saul had
killed the priests of the LORD.
Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some
bade me
kill thee: but mine eye
spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against my lord; for he is the LORD’S
anointed.
Behold, this day you have seen with your own eyes that the LORD delivered you into my hand in the cave. I was told to
kill you, but I
spared you and said, ‘I will not lift my hand against my lord, since he is the LORD’s
anointed.’
Moreover, my father, see,
yea, see the
skirt of thy
robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the
skirt of thy
robe and
killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor
transgression in mine hand, and I have not
sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it.
See, my father, look at the corner of your
robe in my hand. For I cut it off, but I did not
kill you. See and know that there is no evil or rebellion in my hands. I have not
sinned against you, even though you are hunting me down to take my life.
And thou hast shewed this day how that thou hast dealt well with me:
forasmuch as when the LORD had delivered me into thine hand, thou
killedst me not.
And you have shown this day how well you have dealt with me; for when the LORD delivered me into your hand, you did not kill me.
Shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my flesh that I have killed for my shearers, and give it unto men, whom I know not whence they be?
Why should I take my bread and water and the meat I have slaughtered for my shearers, and give them to these men whose origin I do not know?”
And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a
snare for my life, to cause me to die?
But the woman replied, “Surely you know what Saul has done, how he has
killed the mediums and spiritists in the land. Why have you set a
trap to get me
killed?”
And the woman had a fat
calf in the house; and she hasted, and
killed it, and took flour, and
kneaded it, and did
bake unleavened bread thereof:
And had taken the women
captives, that were therein: they
slew not any, either great or small, but carried them away, and went on their way.
They had taken
captive the women and all who were there, both young and old. They had not
killed anyone, but had carried them off as they went on their way.
And David said to him, Canst thou bring me down to this company? And he said,
Swear unto me by God, that thou
wilt neither
kill me, nor deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will bring thee down to this company.
“Will you lead me to these raiders?” David asked. And the man replied, “
Swear to me by God that you will not
kill me or deliver me into the hand of my master, and I will lead you to them.”
And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons; and the Philistines
slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Melchi-shua, Saul’s sons.
The Philistines followed hard after Saul and his sons, and they
killed Saul’s sons
Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua.
And he said unto me again, Stand, I pray thee, upon me, and
slay me: for
anguish is come upon me, because my life is yet whole in me.
Then he
begged me, ‘Stand over me and
kill me, for
agony has seized me, but my life still lingers.’
So I stood upon him, and
slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he was fallen: and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the
bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them
hither unto my lord.
So I stood over him and
killed him, because I knew that after he had fallen he could not
survive. And I took the crown that was on his head and the band that was on his arm, and I have brought them here to my lord.”
And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath
testified against thee, saying, I have slain the LORD’S
anointed.
For David had said to the Amalekite, “Your blood be on your own head because your own mouth has
testified against you, saying, ‘I
killed the LORD’s
anointed.’”
For when they came into the house, he lay on his bed in his
bedchamber, and they
smote him, and
slew him, and
beheaded him, and took his head, and
gat them away through the plain all night.
They had entered the house while
Ish-bosheth was lying on his bed, and having
stabbed and
killed him, they
beheaded him, took his head, and traveled all night by way of the Arabah.
How much more, when wicked men have slain a righteous person in his own house upon his bed? shall I not therefore now require his blood of your hand, and take you away from the earth?
How much more, when wicked men kill a righteous man in his own house and on his own bed, shall I not now require his blood from your hands and remove you from the earth!”
And David commanded his young men, and they
slew them, and cut off their hands and their feet, and
hanged them up over the
pool in
Hebron. But they took the head of
Ish-bosheth, and buried it in the
sepulchre of
Abner in
Hebron.
So David commanded his young men, and they
killed Rechab and Baanah. They cut off their hands and feet and hung their bodies by the
pool in
Hebron, but they took the head of
Ish-bosheth and buried it in
Abner’s tomb in
Hebron.
And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David
slew the men of seven hundred
chariots of the Syrians, and forty thousand
horsemen, and
smote Shobach the captain of their host, who died there.
But the Arameans fled before Israel, and David killed seven hundred charioteers and forty thousand foot soldiers. He also struck down Shobach the commander of their army, who died there.
And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the
forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be
smitten, and die.
In the letter he wrote: “Put Uriah at the front of the fiercest battle; then withdraw from him, so that he may be struck down and killed.”
And the shooters shot from off the wall upon thy servants; and some of the king’s servants be dead, and thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.
Then the archers shot at your servants from the wall, and some of the king’s servants were killed. And your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead as well.”
Wherefore hast thou
despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast
killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of
Ammon.
Why then have you
despised the command of the LORD by doing evil in His sight? You put Uriah the Hittite to the sword and took his wife as your own, for you have slain him with the sword of the
Ammonites.
Now
Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, Mark ye now when Amnon’s heart is
merry with wine, and when I say unto you,
Smite Amnon; then
kill him, fear not: have not I commanded you? be
courageous and be
valiant.
Now
Absalom had ordered his young men, “Watch Amnon until his heart is
merry with wine, and when I order you to strike Amnon down, you are to
kill him. Do not be afraid. Have I not commanded you? Be
courageous and
valiant!”
And Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother, answered and said, Let not my lord suppose that they have slain all the young men the king’s sons; for Amnon only is dead: for by the appointment of
Absalom this hath been determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar.
But Jonadab, the son of David’s brother Shimeah, spoke up: “My lord must not think they have
killed all the sons of the king, for only Amnon is dead. In fact,
Absalom has
planned this since the day Amnon
violated his sister Tamar.
And thy
handmaid had two sons, and they two
strove together in the field, and there was none to part them, but the one
smote the other, and
slew him.
And your
maidservant had two sons who were fighting in the field with no one to separate them, and one struck the other and
killed him.
And, behold, the whole family is risen against thine
handmaid, and they said, Deliver him that
smote his brother, that we may
kill him, for the life of his brother whom he
slew; and we will destroy the heir also: and so they shall
quench my coal which is left, and shall not leave to my husband neither name nor remainder upon the earth.
Now the whole clan has risen up against your
maidservant and said, ‘Hand over the one who struck down his brother, that we may put him to death for the life of the brother whom he
killed. Then we will cut off the heir as well!’ So they would
extinguish my one remaining
ember by not preserving my husband’s name or
posterity on the earth.”
And
Absalom answered
Joab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying, Come
hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? it had been good for me to have been there still: now therefore let me see the king’s face; and if there be any iniquity in me, let him
kill me.
“Look,” said
Absalom, “I sent for you and said, ‘Come here. I want to send you to the king to ask: Why have I come back from Geshur? It would be better for me if I were still there.’ So now, let me see the king’s face, and if there is iniquity in me, let him
kill me.”
And ten young men who carried
Joab’s
armor surrounded
Absalom, struck him, and
killed him.
Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David enquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered, It is for Saul, and for his
bloody house, because he
slew the Gibeonites.
During the reign of David there was a famine for three successive years, and David sought the face of the LORD. And the LORD said, “It is because of the blood shed by Saul and his family, because he killed the Gibeonites.”
And the king called the Gibeonites, and said unto them; (now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the
remnant of the
Amorites; and the children of Israel had
sworn unto them: and Saul sought to
slay them in his zeal to the children of Israel and Judah.)
At this, David summoned the Gibeonites and spoke to them. (Now the Gibeonites were not Israelites, but a
remnant of the
Amorites. The Israelites had taken an oath concerning them, but in his zeal for Israel and Judah, Saul had sought to
kill them.)
And the Gibeonites said unto him, We will have no silver nor gold of Saul, nor of his house; neither for us shalt thou kill any man in Israel. And he said, What ye shall say, that will I do for you.
The Gibeonites said to him, “We need no silver or gold from Saul or his house, nor should you put to death
anyone in Israel for us.” “Whatever you ask, I will do for you,” he replied.
And Ishbi-benob, which was of the sons of the
giant, the weight of whose
spear weighed three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being
girded with a new sword, thought to have slain David.
Then Ishbi-benob, a
descendant of Rapha, whose bronze
spear weighed three hundred shekels and who was bearing a new sword, resolved to
kill David.
But
Abishai the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and
smote the
Philistine, and
killed him. Then the men of David
sware unto him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou
quench not the light of Israel.
But
Abishai son of Zeruiah came to his aid, struck the
Philistine, and
killed him. Then David’s men
swore to him, “You must never again go out with us to battle, so that the lamp of Israel may not be
extinguished.”
And it came to pass after this, that there was again a battle with the Philistines at
Gob: then Sibbechai the Hushathite
slew Saph, which was of the sons of the
giant.
Some time later at
Gob, there was another battle with the Philistines. At that time Sibbecai the Hushathite
killed Saph, one of the descendants of Rapha.
And there was again a battle in
Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim, a
Bethlehemite,
slew the brother of
Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose
spear was like a
weaver’s beam.
Once again there was a battle with the Philistines at
Gob, and Elhanan son of
Jair the
Bethlehemite killed the brother of
Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose
spear was like a
weaver’s beam.
and when he
taunted Israel,
Jonathan the son of David’s brother Shimei
killed him.
These be the names of the mighty men whom David had: The Tachmonite that sat in the seat, chief among the captains; the same was Adino the Eznite: he lift up his
spear against eight hundred, whom he
slew at one time.
These are the names of David’s mighty men: Josheb-basshebeth the Tahchemonite was chief of the Three. He
wielded his
spear against eight hundred men, whom he
killed at one time.
And
Abishai, the brother of
Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief among three. And he lifted up his
spear against three hundred, and
slew them, and had the name among three.
Now
Abishai, the brother of
Joab and son of Zeruiah, was chief of the Three, and he lifted his
spear against three hundred men,
killed them, and won a name along with the Three.
And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a
valiant man, of Kabzeel, who had done many acts, he
slew two
lionlike men of Moab: he went down also and
slew a lion in the midst of a pit in time of snow:
And Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a man of
valor from Kabzeel, a man of many exploits. He struck down two champions of Moab, and on a
snowy day he went down into a pit and
killed a lion.
