Now the name of the man was
Nabal; and the name of his wife
Abigail: and she was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: but the man was
churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the house of
Caleb.
His name was
Nabal, and his wife’s name was
Abigail. She was an intelligent and beautiful woman, but her husband, a Calebite, was harsh and evil in his dealings.
And David heard in the wilderness that
Nabal did
shear his sheep.
While David was in the wilderness, he heard that Nabal was shearing sheep.
And David sent out ten young men, and David said unto the young men, Get you up to
Carmel, and go to
Nabal, and
greet him in my name:
And when David’s young men came, they spake to Nabal according to all those words in the name of David, and ceased.
When David’s young men arrived, they relayed all these words to Nabal on behalf of David. Then they waited.
And
Nabal answered David’s servants, and said, Who is David? and who is the son of
Jesse? there be many servants now a days that break away every man from his master.
But
Nabal asked them, “Who is David? Who is this son of
Jesse? Many servants these days are breaking away from their masters.
But one of the young men told
Abigail,
Nabal’s wife, saying, Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to
salute our master; and he railed on them.
Meanwhile, one of
Nabal’s young men informed
Nabal’s wife
Abigail, “Look, David sent messengers from the wilderness to
greet our master, but he
scolded them.
And she said unto her servants, Go on before me; behold, I come after you. But she told not her husband Nabal.
and said to her young men, “Go
ahead of me. I will be right behind you.” But she did not tell her husband
Nabal.
So and more also do God unto the enemies of David, if I leave of all that
pertain to him by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall.
May God
punish David, and ever so severely, if I let one of
Nabal’s men
survive until morning.”
Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard this man of
Belial, even
Nabal: for as his name is, so is he;
Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I thine
handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom thou
didst send.
My lord should pay no attention to this
scoundrel Nabal, for he lives up to his name: His name means
Fool, and folly accompanies him. I, your servant, did not see my lord’s young men whom you sent.
Now therefore, my lord, as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, seeing the LORD hath
withholden thee from coming to shed blood, and from
avenging thyself with thine own hand, now let thine enemies, and they that seek evil to my lord, be as
Nabal.
Now, my lord, as surely as the LORD lives and you
yourself live, the LORD has held you back from coming to
bloodshed and
avenging yourself with your own hand. May your enemies and those who seek
harm for my lord be like
Nabal.
For in very deed, as the LORD God of Israel liveth, which hath kept me back from
hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto
Nabal by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall.
Otherwise, as surely as the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, who has restrained me from
harming you, if you had not come quickly to meet me, then surely no male belonging to
Nabal would have been left alive by morning light.”
And
Abigail came to
Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and
Nabal’s heart was
merry within him, for he was very
drunken: wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light.
When
Abigail returned to
Nabal, there he was in the house, holding a feast fit for a king, in high spirits and very
drunk. So she told him nothing until morning light.
But it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone.
In the morning when
Nabal was
sober, his wife told him about these events, and his heart failed within him and he became like a stone.
And it came to pass about ten days after, that the LORD
smote Nabal, that he died.
About ten days later, the LORD struck Nabal dead.
And when David heard that
Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be the LORD, that hath
pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of
Nabal, and hath kept his servant from evil: for the LORD hath returned the wickedness of
Nabal upon his own head. And David sent and communed with
Abigail, to take her to him to wife.
On hearing that
Nabal was dead, David said, “Blessed be the LORD, who has
upheld my cause against the reproach of
Nabal and has restrained His servant from evil. For the LORD has brought the wickedness of
Nabal down upon his own head.” Then David sent word to
Abigail, asking for her in marriage.
And David dwelt with Achish at
Gath, he and his men, every man with his household, even David with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and
Abigail the Carmelitess,
Nabal’s wife.
David and his men settled in
Gath with Achish. Each man had his family with him, and David had his two wives: Ahinoam of
Jezreel and
Abigail of
Carmel, the widow of
Nabal.
So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and
Abigail Nabal’s wife the
Carmelite.
So David went there with his two wives, Ahinoam of
Jezreel and
Abigail the widow of
Nabal of
Carmel.
And his second, Chileab, of
Abigail the wife of
Nabal the
Carmelite; and the third,
Absalom the son of
Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;
his second was Chileab, by
Abigail the widow of
Nabal of
Carmel; his third was
Absalom, the son of
Maacah daughter of King Talmai of Geshur;
And it came to pass after these things, that
Naboth the Jezreelite had a
vineyard, which was in
Jezreel, hard by the palace of
Ahab king of Samaria.
And
Ahab spake unto
Naboth, saying, Give me thy
vineyard, that I may have it for a garden of herbs, because it is near unto my house: and I will give thee for it a better
vineyard than it; or, if it seem good to thee, I will give thee the worth of it in money.
So
Ahab said to
Naboth, “Give me your
vineyard to use as a vegetable garden, since it is next to my palace. I will give you a better
vineyard in its place—or if you
prefer, I will give you its value in silver.”
And
Naboth said to
Ahab, The LORD
forbid it me, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers unto thee.
But
Naboth replied, “The LORD
forbid that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers.”
And
Ahab came into his house heavy and displeased because of the word which
Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him: for he had said, I will not give thee the inheritance of my fathers. And he laid him down upon his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no bread.
So
Ahab went to his palace,
sullen and
angry because
Naboth the Jezreelite had told him, “I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.” He lay down on his bed, turned his face away, and refused to eat.
And he said unto her, Because I spake unto
Naboth the Jezreelite, and said unto him, Give me thy
vineyard for money; or else, if it please thee, I will give thee another
vineyard for it: and he answered, I will not give thee my
vineyard.
Ahab answered, “Because I spoke to
Naboth the Jezreelite and told him, ‘Give me your
vineyard for silver, or if you wish, I will give you another
vineyard in its place.’ And he replied, ‘I will not give you my
vineyard!’”
And
Jezebel his wife said unto him,
Dost thou now
govern the kingdom of Israel? arise, and eat bread, and let thine heart be
merry: I will give thee the
vineyard of
Naboth the Jezreelite.
But his wife
Jezebel said to him, “Do you not reign over Israel? Get up, eat some food, and be
cheerful, for I will get you the
vineyard of
Naboth the Jezreelite.”
So she wrote letters in
Ahab’s name, and sealed them with his seal, and sent the letters unto the elders and to the nobles that were in his city, dwelling with
Naboth.
Then
Jezebel wrote letters in
Ahab’s name, sealed them with his seal, and sent them to the elders and nobles who lived with
Naboth in his city.
And she wrote in the letters, saying,
Proclaim a fast, and set
Naboth on high among the people:
In the letters she wrote: “
Proclaim a fast and give
Naboth a seat of honor among the people.
And the men of his city, even the elders and the nobles who were the inhabitants in his city, did as
Jezebel had sent unto them, and as it was written in the letters which she had sent unto them.
So the elders and nobles who lived in
Naboth’s city did as
Jezebel had
instructed in the letters she had written to them.
They proclaimed a fast, and set
Naboth on high among the people.
They proclaimed a fast and gave
Naboth a seat of honor among the people.
And there came in two men, children of
Belial, and sat before him: and the men of
Belial witnessed against him, even against
Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying,
Naboth did
blaspheme God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, that he died.
And the two scoundrels came in and sat opposite
Naboth, and these men
testified against him before the people, saying, “
Naboth has
cursed both God and the king!” So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death.
Then they sent to
Jezebel, saying,
Naboth is stoned, and is dead.
Then they sent word to
Jezebel: “
Naboth has been stoned to death.”
And it came to pass, when
Jezebel heard that
Naboth was stoned, and was dead, that
Jezebel said to
Ahab, Arise, take possession of the
vineyard of
Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give thee for money: for
Naboth is not alive, but dead.
When
Jezebel heard that
Naboth had been stoned to death, she said to
Ahab, “Get up and take possession of the
vineyard of
Naboth the Jezreelite, who refused to give it to you for silver. For
Naboth is no longer alive, but dead.”
And it came to pass, when
Ahab heard that
Naboth was dead, that
Ahab rose up to go down to the
vineyard of
Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it.
And when
Ahab heard that
Naboth was dead, he got up and went down to take possession of the
vineyard of
Naboth the Jezreelite.
Arise, go down to meet
Ahab king of Israel, which is in Samaria: behold, he is in the
vineyard of
Naboth,
whither he is gone down to possess it.
“Get up and go down to meet
Ahab king of Israel, who is in Samaria. See, he is in the
vineyard of
Naboth, of which he has gone to take possession.
And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou killed, and also taken possession? And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the LORD, In the place where dogs
licked the blood of
Naboth shall dogs
lick thy blood, even thine.
Tell him that this is what the LORD says: ‘Have you not murdered a man and seized his land?’ Then tell him that this is also what the LORD says: ‘In the place where the dogs
licked up the blood of
Naboth, there also the dogs will
lick up your blood—
yes, yours!’”
And
Joram said, Make ready. And his
chariot was made ready. And
Joram king of Israel and
Ahaziah king of Judah went out, each in his
chariot, and they went out against
Jehu, and met him in the portion of
Naboth the Jezreelite.
Then said
Jehu to Bidkar his captain, Take up, and cast him in the portion of the field of
Naboth the Jezreelite: for remember how that, when I and thou
rode together after
Ahab his father, the LORD laid this burden upon him;
And
Jehu said to Bidkar his officer, “
Pick him up and throw him into the field of
Naboth the Jezreelite. For remember that when you and I were riding together behind his father
Ahab, the LORD lifted up this burden against him:
Surely I have seen
yesterday the blood of
Naboth, and the blood of his sons, saith the LORD; and I will requite thee in this
plat, saith the LORD. Now therefore take and cast him into the
plat of ground, according to the word of the LORD.
‘As surely as I saw the blood of
Naboth and the blood of his sons
yesterday, declares the LORD, so will I repay you on this plot of ground, declares the LORD.’ Now then, according to the word of the LORD,
pick him up and throw him on the plot of ground.”
Wherefore against him Nabuchodonosor the king of Babylon came up, and bound him with a chain of brass, and carried him into Babylon.
Nabuchodonosor also took of the holy vessels of the Lord, and carried them away, and set them in his own temple at Babylon.
So after a year Nabuchodonosor sent and caused him to be brought into Babylon with the holy vessels of the Lord;
And after that king
Nabuchodonosor had made him to
swear by the name of the Lord, he
forswore himself, and rebelled; and
hardening his neck, his heart, he
transgressed the laws of the Lord God of Israel.
King Cyrus also brought forth the holy vessels, which Nabuchodonosor had carried away from Jerusalem, and had set up in his temple of idols.
And these are they of
Jewry that came up from the captivity, where they dwelt as strangers, whom
Nabuchodonosor the king of Babylon had carried away unto Babylon.
But when our fathers
provoked God unto wrath, and
sinned against the Lord of Israel which is in heaven, he gave them over into the power of
Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, of the Chaldees;
And the holy vessels of gold and of silver, that Nabuchodonosor had carried away out of the house at Jerusalem, and had set them in his own temple those Cyrus the king brought forth again out of the temple at Babylon, and they were delivered to Zorobabel and to Sanabassarus the ruler,
And that the holy vessels of the house of the Lord, both of gold and silver, that Nabuchodonosor took out of the house at Jerusalem, and brought to Babylon, should be restored to the house at Jerusalem, and be set in the place where they were before.
And upon his left hand stood Phaldaius, Misael, Melchias, Lothasubus, and Nabarias.
But before he died he heard of the destruction of Nineve, which was taken by
Nabuchodonosor and Assuerus: and before his death he
rejoiced over Nineve.
In the
twelfth year of the reign of
Nabuchodonosor, who reigned in Nineve, the great city; in the days of Arphaxad, which reigned over the Medes in Ecbatane,
Even in those days king Nabuchodonosor made war with king Arphaxad in the great plain, which is the plain in the borders of Ragau.
Then
Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians sent unto all that dwelt in Persia, and to all that dwelt westward, and to those that dwelt in
Cilicia, and Damascus, and Libanus, and Antilibanus, and to all that dwelt upon the sea coast,
But all the inhabitants of the land made light of the commandment of
Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians, neither went they with him to the battle; for they were not afraid of him:
yea, he was before them as one man, and they sent away his ambassadors from them without effect, and with disgrace.
Therefore
Nabuchodonosor was very
angry with all this country, and
sware by his throne and kingdom, that he would surely be
avenged upon all those coasts of
Cilicia, and Damascus, and Syria, and that he would
slay with the sword all the inhabitants of the land of Moab, and the children of
Ammon, and all
Judea, and all that were in Egypt, till ye come to the borders of the two seas.
And in the
eighteenth year, the two and
twentieth day of the first month, there was talk in the house of
Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians that he should, as he said,
avenge himself on all the earth.
And when he had ended his counsel, Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians called Holofernes the chief captain of his army, which was next unto him, and said unto him.
Then he went forth and all his power to go before king
Nabuchodonosor in the voyage, and to cover all the face of the earth westward with their
chariots, and
horsemen, and their chosen
footmen.
Behold, we the servants of Nabuchodonosor the great king lie before thee; use us as shall be good in thy sight.
Yet he did cast down their frontiers, and cut down their groves: for he had decreed to destroy all the gods of the land, that all nations should worship Nabuchodonosor only, and that all tongues and tribes should call upon him as god.
Now the children of Israel, that dwelt in
Judea, heard all that Holofernes the chief captain of
Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians had done to the nations, and after what manner he had
spoiled all their temples, and brought them to
nought.
And who art thou, Achior, and the hirelings of Ephraim, that thou hast
prophesied against us as to day, and hast said, that we should not make war with the people of Israel, because their God will defend them? and who is God but
Nabuchodonosor?
For with them we will
tread them under foot, and their mountains shall be
drunken with their blood, and their fields shall be filled with their dead bodies, and their footsteps shall not be able to stand before us, for they shall utterly perish, saith king
Nabuchodonosor, lord of all the earth: for he said, None of my words shall be in vain.
Then said Holofernes unto her, Woman, be of good comfort, fear not in thine heart: for I never
hurt any that was willing to serve
Nabuchodonosor, the king of all the earth.
For none shall
hurt thee, but
entreat thee well, as they do the servants of king
Nabuchodonosor my lord.
As Nabuchodonosor king of all the earth liveth, and as his power liveth, who hath sent thee for the upholding of every living thing: for not only men shall serve him by thee, but also the beasts of the field, and the cattle, and the fowls of the air, shall live by thy power under Nabuchodonosor and all his house.
And now thou art both beautiful in thy countenance, and
witty in thy words: surely if thou do as thou hast spoken thy God shall be my God, and thou shalt dwell in the house of king
Nabuchodonosor, and shalt be
renowned through the whole earth.
Then went Bagoas from the presence of Holofernes, and came to her, and he said, Let not this fair
damsel fear to come to my lord, and to be honoured in his presence, and drink wine, and be
merry with us and be made this day as one of the daughters of the Assyrians, which serve in the house of
Nabuchodonosor.
These slaves have dealt
treacherously; one woman of the Hebrews hath brought shame upon the house of king
Nabuchodonosor: for, behold, Holofernes lieth upon the ground without a head.
He was also one of the
captives, which
Nabuchodonosor the king of Babylon carried from Jerusalem with Jechonias king of
Judea; and this was his dream:
After that
Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon had carried away Jechonias, and the princes, and the
captives, and the mighty men, and the people of the land, from Jerusalem, and brought them unto Babylon.
And pray for the life of Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, and for the life of Balthasar his son, that their days may be upon earth as the days of heaven:
And the Lord will give us strength, and
lighten our eyes, and we shall live under the shadow of
Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, and under the shadow of Balthasar his son, and we shall serve them many days, and find favour in their sight.
Because of the sins which ye have committed before God, ye shall be led away
captives into Babylon by
Nabuchodonosor king of the Babylonians.
Where they met with the Nabathites, who came unto them in a peaceable manner, and told them every thing that had happened to their brethren in the land of Galaad:
Now
Jonathan had sent his brother John, a captain of the people, to pray his friends the
Nabathites, that they might leave with them their carriage, which was much.
