And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt
not tempt the Lord thy God.
But Jesus answered, “It also says, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
And all bare him witness, and wondered at the
gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is
not this Joseph’s son?
All spoke well of Him and
marveled at the
gracious words that came from His lips. “Isn’t this the son of Joseph?” they asked.
But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of
Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow.
Yet
Elijah was
not sent to any of them, but to the widow of Zarephath in
Sidon.
And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was
cleansed, saving
Naaman the
Syrian.
And Jesus
rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and
hurt him
not.
But Jesus
rebuked the
demon. “Be silent!” He said. “Come out of him!” At this, the
demon threw the man down before them all and came out without
harming him.
And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he
rebuking them suffered them
not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.
Demons also came out of many people,
shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But He
rebuked the demons and would
not allow them to speak, because they knew He was the Christ.
And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them.
At
daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place, and the crowds were looking for Him. They came to Him and tried to keep Him from leaving.
And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have
toiled all the night, and have taken
nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.
“Master,” Simon replied, “we have worked hard all night without catching anything. But because You say so, I will let down the nets.”
And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.
and so were his partners James and John, the sons of Zebedee. “Do not be afraid,” Jesus said to Simon. “From now on you will catch men.”
And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and
shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy
cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.
“Do
not tell
anyone,” Jesus
instructed him. “But go, show
yourself to the priest and present the offering Moses prescribed for your
cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
And when they could
not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the
tiling with his
couch into the midst before Jesus.
but they could
not find a way through the crowd. So they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the
tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.
And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.
Jesus answered, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.
I came
not to call the righteous, but sinners to
repentance.
I have
not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to
repentance.”
And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.
He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and sews it on an old one. If he does, he will
tear the new garment as well, and the
patch from the new will
not match the old.
And certain of the
Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is
not lawful to do on the sabbath days?
But some of the
Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”
And Jesus answering them said, Have ye
not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an
hungred, and they which were with him;
Jesus replied, “Have you
not read what David did when he and his companions were
hungry?
How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the
shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is
not lawful to eat but for the priests alone?
He entered the house of God, took the consecrated bread and gave it to his companions, and
ate what is lawful only for the priests to eat.”
And unto him that smiteth thee on the one
cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy
cloke forbid not to take thy coat also.
If someone strikes you on one
cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone takes your
cloak, do
not withhold your
tunic as well.
Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.
Give to
everyone who asks you, and if
anyone takes what is yours, do
not demand it back.
But love ye your enemies, and do good, and
lend, hoping for
nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the
unthankful and to the evil.
But love your enemies, do good to them, and
lend to them, expecting
nothing in return. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He is kind to the
ungrateful and wicked.
Judge
not, and ye shall
not be judged:
condemn not, and ye shall
not be condemned:
forgive, and ye shall be
forgiven:
Do
not judge, and you will
not be judged. Do
not condemn, and you will
not be condemned.
Forgive, and you will be
forgiven.
And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they
not both fall into the
ditch?
Jesus also told them a parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit?
The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.
A disciple is
not above his teacher, but
everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher.
And why beholdest thou the
mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but perceivest
not the beam that is in thine own eye?
Why do you look at the
speck in your brother’s eye, but fail to
notice the beam in your own eye?
Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the
mote that is in thine eye, when thou
thyself beholdest
not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou
hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the
mote that is in thy brother’s eye.
How can you say, ‘Brother, let me take the
speck out of your eye,’ while you
yourself fail to see the beam in your own eye? You
hypocrite! First take the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the
speck from your brother’s eye.
For a good tree bringeth
not forth corrupt fruit; neither
doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.
For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do
not gather figs, nor of a
bramble bush gather they grapes.
For each tree is known by its own fruit. Indeed, figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor grapes from brambles.
And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ but not do what I say?
He is like a man which built an house, and
digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat
vehemently upon that house, and could
not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.
He is like a man building a house, who
dug down deep and laid his foundation on the rock. When the flood came, the
torrent crashed against that house but could
not shake it, because it was well built.
But he that heareth, and doeth
not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat
vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.
But the one who hears My words and does
not act on them is like a man who built his house on ground without a foundation. The
torrent crashed against that house, and immediately it fell—and great was its destruction!”
Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now
not far from the house, the
centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble
not thyself: for I am
not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof:
So Jesus went with them. But when He was
not far from the house, the
centurion sent friends with the message: “Lord, do
not trouble
Yourself, for I am
not worthy to have You come under my roof.
Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be
healed.
That is why I did
not consider myself worthy to come to You. But just say the word, and my servant will be
healed.
When Jesus heard these things, he
marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have
not found so great faith, no,
not in Israel.
When Jesus heard this, He
marveled at the
centurion. Turning to the crowd following Him, He said, “I tell you,
not even in Israel have I found such great faith.”
And when the Lord saw her, he had
compassion on her, and said unto her,
Weep not.
When the Lord saw her, He had
compassion on her and said, “Do
not weep.”
Blessed is the one who does not fall away on account of Me.”
For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John, yet even the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
But the
Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being
not baptized of him.
But the
Pharisees and experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had
not been
baptized by John.
They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have
not danced; we have
mourned to you, and ye have
not wept.
They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to one another: ‘We played the
flute for you, and you did
not dance; we
sang a
dirge, and you did
not weep.’
And when they had
nothing to pay, he
frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?
When they were unable to repay him, he
forgave both of them. Which one, then, will love him more?”
And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and
wiped them with the hairs of her head.
And turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? When I entered your house, you did
not give Me water for My feet, but she wet My feet with her tears and
wiped them with her hair.
Thou gavest me no
kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath
not ceased to
kiss my feet.
You did
not greet Me with a
kiss, but she has
not stopped
kissing My feet since I arrived.
And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand.
He replied, “The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, ‘though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.’
Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.
The seeds along the path are those who hear, but the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.
And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are
choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.
The seeds that fell among the thorns are those who hear, but as they go on their way, they are
choked by the
worries, riches, and pleasures of this life, and their fruit does
not mature.
For
nothing is secret, that shall
not be made manifest; neither any thing
hid, that shall
not be known and come abroad.
For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be made known and brought to light.
Take
heed therefore how ye hear: for
whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and
whosoever hath
not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have.
Pay attention, therefore, to how you
listen.
Whoever has will be given more, but
whoever does
not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.”
Then came to him his mother and his brethren, and could not come at him for the press.
Then Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see Him, but they were unable to reach Him because of the crowd.
And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs.
When Jesus
stepped ashore, He was met by a
demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had
not worn clothing or lived in a house, but he stayed in the tombs.
When he saw Jesus, he
cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I
beseech thee,
torment me
not.
When the man saw Jesus, he
cried out and fell down before Him,
shouting in a loud voice, “What do You want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I
beg You
not to
torture me!”
And they
besought him that he would
not command them to go out into the deep.
And the demons kept
begging Jesus
not to order them to go into the
Abyss.
And when the woman saw that she was
not hid, she came
trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him and how she was
healed immediately.
Then the woman, seeing that she could
not escape
notice, came
trembling and fell down before Him. In the presence of all the people, she explained why she had touched Him and how she had immediately been
healed.
While he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the
synagogue’s house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble
not the Master.
While He was still speaking, someone arrived from the house of the
synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” he told Jairus. “Do
not bother the Teacher anymore.”
But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole.
But Jesus overheard them and said to Jairus, “Do
not be afraid; just believe, and she will be
healed.”
And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the
maiden.
When He entered the house, He did
not allow
anyone to go in with Him except Peter, John, James, and the child’s father and mother.
And all
wept, and
bewailed her: but he said,
Weep not; she is
not dead, but sleepeth.
And her parents were
astonished: but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done.
Her parents were
astounded, but Jesus ordered them
not to tell
anyone what had happened.
And he said unto them, Take
nothing for your journey, neither
staves, nor
scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats
apiece.
“Take
nothing for the journey,” He told them, “no staff, no
bag, no bread, no money, no second
tunic.
And
whosoever will
not receive you, when ye go out of that city,
shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.
If
anyone does
not welcome you,
shake the dust off your feet when you leave that town, as a testimony against them.”
And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;
But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.
But I tell you truthfully, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.”
And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.
As Moses and
Elijah were leaving, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for You, one for Moses, and one for
Elijah.” (He did
not know what he was saying.)
And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.
After the voice had spoken, only Jesus was present with them. The disciples kept this to themselves, and in those days they did
not tell
anyone what they had seen.
And I
besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could
not.
I
begged Your disciples to drive it out, but they were unable.”
But they understood
not this saying, and it was
hid from them, that they perceived it
not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.
But they did
not understand this statement. It was
veiled from them so that they could
not comprehend it, and they were afraid to ask Him about it.
And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we
forbad him, because he followeth
not with us.
“Master,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in Your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does
not accompany us.”
And Jesus said unto him,
Forbid him
not: for he that is
not against us is for us.
“Do
not stop him,” Jesus replied, “for
whoever is
not against you is for you.”
And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.
But the people there refused to
welcome Him, because He was heading for Jerusalem.
But he turned, and
rebuked them, and said, Ye know
not what manner of spirit ye are of.
For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.
And He and His disciples went on to another village.
And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head.”
And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again.
If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; if not, it will return to you.
And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his
hire. Go
not from house to house.
Stay at the same house, eating and drinking whatever you are offered. For the worker is worthy of his wages. Do not move around from house to house.
But into
whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you
not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say,
But if you enter a town and they do
not welcome you, go into the streets and declare,
Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do
wipe off against you:
notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come
nigh unto you.
‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we
wipe off as a testimony against you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God is near.’
Behold, I give unto you power to
tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and
nothing shall by any means
hurt you.
Behold, I have given you authority to
tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy.
Nothing will
harm you.
Notwithstanding in this
rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather
rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
Nevertheless, do
not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but
rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.
For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”
But
Martha was
cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord,
dost thou
not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone?
bid her therefore that she help me.
But
Martha was distracted by all the preparations to be made. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, do You
not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her to help me!”
But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
But only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, and it will not be taken away from her.”
And
forgive us our sins; for we also
forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us
not into
temptation; but deliver us from evil.
For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him?
because a friend of mine has come to me on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him.’
And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee.
And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Do not bother me. My door is already shut, and my children and I are in bed. I cannot get up to give you anything.’
I say unto you, Though he will
not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his
importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth.
I tell you, even though he will
not get up to provide for him because of his friendship, yet because of the man’s
persistence, he will get up and give him as much as he needs.
He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.
He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters.
When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out.
When an unclean spirit comes out of a man, it passes through
arid places seeking rest and does
not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’
Take
heed therefore that the light which is in thee be
not darkness.
Be careful, then, that the light within you is not darkness.
But the
Pharisee was surprised to see that Jesus did
not first wash before the meal.
Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also?
You fools! Did not the One who made the outside make the inside as well?
But
woe unto you,
Pharisees! for ye
tithe mint and
rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and
not to leave the other undone.
Woe to you
Pharisees! You pay
tithes of
mint,
rue, and every
herb, but you disregard justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without neglecting the former.
Woe unto you,
scribes and
Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves which appear
not, and the men that walk over them are
not aware of them.
Woe to you! For you are like unmarked graves, which men walk over without even
noticing.”
And he said,
Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye
lade men with burdens
grievous to be borne, and ye
yourselves touch
not the burdens with one of your fingers.
“
Woe to you as well, experts in the law!” He replied. “You
weigh men down with heavy burdens, but you
yourselves will
not lift a finger to
lighten their load.
Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered
not in
yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.
Woe to you experts in the law! For you have taken away the key to knowledge. You
yourselves have
not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.”
For there is
nothing covered, that shall
not be revealed; neither
hid, that shall
not be known.
There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, and nothing hidden that will not be made known.
And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.
I tell you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more.
Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?
Are
not five sparrows sold for two
pennies? Yet
not one of them is forgotten by God.
But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.
And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
And
whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be
forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall
not be
forgiven.
And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say:
When you are brought before synagogues, rulers, and authorities, do
not worry about how to defend
yourselves or what to say.
