sheba; because there they
sware both of them.

Beersheba, because it was there that the two of them
swore an
oath.
The LORD God of heaven, which took me from my father’s house, and from the land of my kindred, and which spake unto me, and that
sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from thence.
The LORD, the God of heaven, who brought me from my father’s house and my native land, who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give this land’—He will send His angel before you so that you can take a wife for my son from there.
And if the woman will not be willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be clear from this my oath: only bring not my son thither again.

swear, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the
Canaanites, in whose land I dwell:

swear an
oath and said, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the
Canaanites in whose land I dwell,

And when you go to my kindred, if they refuse to give her to you, then you will be released from my oath.’

bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the
oath which I
sware unto Abraham thy father;

bless you. For I will give all these lands to you and your offspring, and I will
confirm the
oath that I
swore to your father Abraham.
And they said, We saw certainly that the LORD was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an
oath betwixt us, even
betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee;
“We can plainly see that the LORD has been with you,” they replied. “We
recommend that there should now be an
oath between us and you. Let us make a covenant with you
And they rose up
betimes in the morning, and
sware one to another: and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.

swear a solemn
oath when he said, “God will surely attend to you, and then you must carry my bones with you from this place.”
Then shall an oath of the LORD be between them both, that he hath not put his hand unto his neighbour’s goods; and the owner of it shall accept thereof, and he shall not make it good.

neighbor’s property. The owner must accept the
oath and require no
restitution.
Or if a soul
swear,
pronouncing with his lips to do evil, or to do good,
whatsoever it be that a man shall
pronounce with an
oath, and it be
hid from him; when he knoweth of it, then he shall be guilty in one of these.
Or if someone swears
thoughtlessly with his lips to do anything good or evil—in whatever matter a man may
rashly pronounce an
oath—even if he is unaware of it, when he realizes it, he is guilty in the matter.
And the priest shall charge her by an
oath, and say unto the woman, If no man have
lain with thee, and if thou hast not gone aside to uncleanness with another instead of thy husband, be thou free from this bitter water that causeth the
curse:
And he is to put the woman under
oath and say to her, ‘If no other man has
slept with you and you have not gone
astray and become
defiled while under your husband’s authority, may you be
immune to this bitter water that brings a
curse.
Then the priest shall charge the woman with an
oath of
cursing, and the priest shall say unto the woman, The LORD make thee a
curse and an
oath among thy people, when the LORD
doth make thy
thigh to
rot, and thy
belly to swell;
If a man
vow a
vow unto the LORD, or
swear an
oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth.
If a man makes a
vow to the LORD or swears an
oath to
obligate himself by a
pledge, he must not break his word; he must do everything he has promised.
And if she
vowed in her husband’s house, or bound her soul by a bond with an
oath;
If a woman in her husband’s house has made a
vow or put herself under an obligation with an
oath,

vow, and every binding
oath to
afflict the soul, her husband may establish it, or her husband may make it void.

kindled the same time, and he
sware, saying,
So the anger of the LORD was
kindled that day, and He
swore an
oath, saying,

wroth, and
sware, saying,
When the LORD heard your words, He grew
angry and
swore an
oath, saying,
(For the LORD thy God is a
merciful God;) he will not
forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor
forget the covenant of thy fathers which he
sware unto them.
For the LORD your God is a
merciful God; He will not
abandon you or destroy you or
forget the covenant with your fathers, which He
swore to them by
oath.
Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God, and serve him, and shalt
swear by his name.
Fear the LORD your God, serve Him only, and take your oaths in His name.
But because the LORD loved you, and because he would keep the
oath which he had
sworn unto your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of
bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
But because the LORD loved you and kept the
oath He
swore to your fathers, He brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt thou
cleave, and
swear by his name.
You are to fear the LORD your God and serve Him. Hold fast to Him and take your oaths in His name.
That thou shouldest enter into covenant with the LORD thy God, and into his oath, which the LORD thy God maketh with thee this day:
so that you may enter into the covenant of the LORD your God, which He is making with you
today, and into His
oath,
Neither with you only do I make this covenant and this oath;
I am making this covenant and this oath not only with you,
And it come to pass, when he heareth the words of this
curse, that he
bless himself in his heart, saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in the imagination of mine heart, to add
drunkenness to
thirst:
because when such a person hears the words of this
oath, he invokes a blessing on himself, saying, ‘I will have peace, even though I walk in the
stubbornness of my own heart.’ This will bring
disaster on the watered land as well as the dry.
And the men said unto her, We will be
blameless of this thine
oath which thou hast made us
swear.
The men said to her, “We will not be bound by this
oath you made us
swear And if thou utter this our business, then we will be
quit of thine
oath which thou hast made us to
swear.
And if you report our mission, we will be released from the
oath you made us
swear.”
And Joshua
adjured them at that time, saying,
Cursed be the man before the LORD, that riseth up and buildeth this city
Jericho: he shall lay the foundation thereof in his
firstborn, and in his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it.
At that time Joshua
invoked this solemn
oath: “
Cursed before the LORD is the man who rises up and rebuilds this city,
Jericho; at the cost of his
firstborn he will lay its foundations; at the cost of his youngest he will set up its gates.”
And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation
sware unto them.
And Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the congregation
swore an
oath to them.
And the children of Israel
smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had
sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel. And all the congregation
murmured against the princes.
But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the congregation had
sworn an
oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. And the whole congregation grumbled against the leaders.
But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have
sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.
All the leaders answered, “We have
sworn an
oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, and now we cannot touch them.
This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the
oath which we
sware unto them.
This is how we will treat them: We will let them live, so that no wrath will fall on us because of the
oath we
swore to them.”
Now the men of Israel had
sworn in Mizpeh, saying, There shall not any of us give his daughter unto Benjamin to wife.
Now the men of Israel had
sworn an
oath at
Mizpah, saying, “Not one of us will give his daughter in marriage to a
Benjamite.”
And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation unto the LORD? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to the LORD to Mizpeh, saying, He shall surely be put to death.
The Israelites asked, “Who among all the tribes of Israel did not come to the assembly before the LORD?” For they had taken a solemn
oath that
anyone who failed to come up before the LORD at
Mizpah would surely be put to death.
And the men of Israel were distressed that day: for Saul had
adjured the people, saying,
Cursed be the man that eateth any food until evening, that I may be
avenged on mine enemies. So none of the people tasted any food.
Now the men of Israel were in distress that day, for Saul had placed the troops under an
oath, saying, “
Cursed is the man who eats any food before evening, before I have taken
vengeance on my enemies.” So none of the troops tasted any food.
And when the people were come into the wood, behold, the honey dropped; but no man put his hand to his mouth: for the people feared the oath.
And when they entered the forest and saw the flowing honey, not one of them put his hand to his mouth, because they feared the oath.
But
Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the
oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and
dipped it in an
honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were
enlightened.
Jonathan, however, had not heard that his father had charged the people with the
oath. So he reached out the end of the staff in his hand,
dipped it into the
honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes
brightened.
Then answered one of the people, and said, Thy father straitly charged the people with an
oath, saying,
Cursed be the man that eateth any food this day. And the people were
faint.
Then one of the soldiers told him, “Your father bound the troops with a solemn
oath, saying, ‘
Cursed is the man who eats food
today.’ That is why the people are
faint.”

listened to the voice of
Jonathan and
swore an

And David
sware unto Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men
gat them up unto the hold.
So David gave his
oath to Saul. Then Saul returned home, but David and his men went up to the
stronghold.
And when all the people came to cause David to eat meat while it was yet day, David
sware, saying, So do God to me, and more also, if I taste bread, or ought else, till the sun be down.
Then all the people came and urged David to eat something while it was still day, but David took an
oath, saying, “May God
punish me, and ever so severely, if I taste bread or anything else before the sun sets!”
Therefore the king said unto Shimei, Thou shalt not die. And the king
sware unto him.
So the king said to Shimei, “You shall not die.” And the king
swore an
oath to him.
And the king called the Gibeonites, and said unto them; (now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the
remnant of the
Amorites; and the children of Israel had
sworn unto them: and Saul sought to
slay them in his zeal to the children of Israel and Judah.)
At this, David summoned the Gibeonites and spoke to them. (Now the Gibeonites were not Israelites, but a
remnant of the
Amorites. The Israelites had taken an
oath concerning them, but in his zeal for Israel and Judah, Saul had sought to kill them.)
But the king
spared Mephibosheth, the son of
Jonathan the son of Saul, because of the LORD’S
oath that was between them, between David and
Jonathan the son of Saul.
Now the king
spared Mephibosheth son of
Jonathan, the son of Saul, because of the
oath before the LORD between David and
Jonathan son of Saul.
And the king
sware, and said, As the LORD liveth, that hath redeemed my soul out of all distress,
And the king
swore an
oath, saying, “As surely as the LORD lives, who has redeemed my life from all distress,
Why then hast thou not kept the oath of the LORD, and the commandment that I have charged thee with?
So why have you not kept your oath to the LORD and the command that I gave you?”
If any man
trespass against his neighbour, and an
oath be laid upon him to cause him to
swear, and the
oath come before thine altar in this house:
When a man sins against his
neighbor and is required to take an
oath, and he comes to take an
oath before Your altar in this temple,
As the LORD thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom,
whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not there; he took an
oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.
As surely as the LORD your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent someone to search for you. When they said, ‘He is not here,’ he made that kingdom or nation
swear that they had not found you.
And the seventh year Jehoiada sent and
fetched the rulers over hundreds, with the captains and the guard, and brought them to him into the house of the LORD, and made a covenant with them, and took an
oath of them in the house of the LORD, and shewed them the king’s son.
Then in the seventh year, Jehoiada sent for the commanders of hundreds, the Carites, and the guards, and had them brought into the house of the LORD. There he made a covenant with them and put them under oath. He showed them the king’s son
And Gedaliah
sware to them, and to their men, and said unto them, Fear not to be the servants of the Chaldees: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon; and it shall be well with you.
And Gedaliah took an
oath before them and their men,
assuring them, “Do not be afraid of the servants of the Chaldeans. Live in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will be well with you.”
Even of the covenant which he made with Abraham, and of his oath unto Isaac;
the covenant He made with Abraham, and the
oath He
swore to Isaac.
If a man sin against his neighbour, and an
oath be laid upon him to make him
swear, and the
oath come before thine altar in this house;
When a man sins against his
neighbor and is required to take an
oath, and he comes to take an
oath before Your altar in this temple,

oath to the LORD with a loud voice, with
shouting,
trumpets, and rams’ horns.
And all Judah
rejoiced at the
oath: for they had
sworn with all their heart, and sought him with their whole desire; and he was found of them: and the LORD gave them rest round about.
And all Judah
rejoiced over the
oath, for they had
sworn it with all their heart. They had sought Him earnestly, and He was found by them. So the LORD gave them rest on every side.
Then arose
Ezra, and made the chief priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to
swear that they should do according to this word. And they
sware.
So
Ezra got up and made the leading priests, Levites, and all Israel take an
oath to do what had been said. And they took the
oath.
Then said they, We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise.
“We will restore it,” they replied, “and will require nothing more from them. We will do as you say.” So I summoned the priests and required of the nobles and officials an oath that they would do what they had promised.
For there were many in Judah
sworn unto him, because he was the son in law of Shechaniah the son of Arah; and his son Johanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah.
For many in Judah were bound by oath to him, since he was a son-in-law of Shecaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berechiah.
They
clave to their brethren, their nobles, and entered into a
curse, and into an
oath, to walk in God’s law, which was given by Moses the servant of God, and to observe and do all the commandments of the LORD our Lord, and his judgments and his statutes;
hereby join with their noble brothers and commit themselves with a
sworn oath to follow the Law of God given through His servant Moses and to carefully obey all the commandments, ordinances, and statutes of the LORD our Lord.
And I
contended with them, and
cursed them, and
smote certain of them, and
plucked off their hair, and made them
swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for
yourselves.
I
rebuked them and called down curses on them. I beat some of these men and pulled out their hair. Then I made them take an
oath before God and said, “You must not give your daughters in marriage to their sons or take their daughters as wives for your sons or for
yourselves!
In whose eyes a
vile person is
contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the LORD. He that sweareth to his own
hurt, and changeth not.
who despises the
vile but honors those who fear the LORD, who does not
revise a costly
oath,
Unto whom I
sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest.
So I
swore on
oath in My anger, “They shall never enter My rest.”
Which covenant he made with Abraham, and his oath unto Isaac;
the covenant He made with Abraham, and the
oath He
swore to Isaac.
How he
sware unto the LORD, and
vowed unto the mighty God of Jacob;
how he
swore an
oath to the LORD, and
vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob:
The LORD hath
sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.
The LORD
swore an
oath to David, a promise He will not
revoke: “One of your descendants I will place on your throne.
I counsel thee to keep the king’s commandment, and that in regard of the oath of God.
Keep the king’s command, I say, because of your oath before God.
All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the
sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an
oath.
It is the same for all: There is a common fate for the righteous and the wicked, for the good and the bad, for the clean and the unclean, for the one who sacrifices and the one who does not. As it is for the good, so it is for the
sinner; as it is for the one who makes a
vow, so it is for the one who refuses to take a
vow.
That he who blesseth himself in the earth shall
bless himself in the God of truth; and he that sweareth in the earth shall
swear by the God of truth; because the former troubles are forgotten, and because they are
hid from mine eyes.
Whoever invokes a blessing in the land will do so by the God of truth, and
whoever takes an
oath in the land will
swear by the God of truth. For the former troubles will be forgotten and hidden from My sight.
That I may perform the
oath which I have
sworn unto your fathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is this day. Then answered I, and said, So be it, O LORD.
This was in order to establish the
oath I
swore to your forefathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is to this day.” “
Amen, LORD,” I answered.
And Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam the son of Shaphan
sware unto them and to their men, saying, Fear not to serve the Chaldeans: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you.
Gedaliah son of
Ahikam, the son of Shaphan,
swore an
oath to them and their men,
assuring them, “Do not be afraid to serve the Chaldeans. Live in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well with you.
For thus saith the Lord GOD; I will even deal with thee as thou hast done, which hast
despised the
oath in breaking the covenant.
For this is what the Lord GOD says: I will deal with you according to your deeds, since you have
despised the
oath by breaking the covenant.
And hath taken of the king’s seed, and made a covenant with him, and hath taken an oath of him: he hath also taken the mighty of the land:
He took a member of the royal family and made a covenant with him, putting him under oath. Then he carried away the leading men of the land,
As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely in the place where the king dwelleth that made him king, whose
oath he
despised, and whose covenant he
brake, even with him in the midst of Babylon he shall die.
‘As surely as I live,’ declares the Lord GOD, ‘he will die in Babylon, in the land of the king who enthroned him, whose
oath he
despised and whose covenant he broke.
Seeing he
despised the
oath by breaking the covenant, when, lo, he had given his hand, and hath done all these things, he shall not escape.
He
despised the
oath by breaking the covenant. Seeing that he gave his hand in
pledge yet did all these things, he will not escape!’
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; As I live, surely mine
oath that he hath
despised, and my covenant that he hath broken, even it will I
recompense upon his own head.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘As surely as I live, I will bring down upon his head My
oath that he
despised and My covenant that he broke.
And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; In the day when I chose Israel, and lifted up mine hand unto the seed of the house of Jacob, and made myself known unto them in the land of Egypt, when I lifted up mine hand unto them, saying, I am the LORD your God;
and tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: On the day I chose Israel, I
swore an
oath to the descendants of the house of Jacob and made Myself known to them in the land of Egypt. With an
uplifted hand I said to them, ‘I am the LORD your God.’
And it shall be unto them as a false
divination in their sight, to them that have
sworn oaths: but he will call to
remembrance the iniquity, that they may be taken.
It will seem like a false
omen to the eyes of those who have
sworn allegiance to him, but it will draw attention to their guilt and take them
captive.
Yea, all Israel have
transgressed thy law, even by departing, that they might not obey thy voice; therefore the
curse is poured upon us, and the
oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God, because we have
sinned against him.
All Israel has
transgressed Your law and turned away, refusing to obey Your voice; so the
oath and the
curse written in the Law of Moses the servant of God has been poured out on us, because we have
sinned against You.
Though thou, Israel, play the
harlot, yet let not Judah
offend; and come not ye unto
Gilgal, neither go ye up to Beth-
aven, nor
swear, The LORD liveth.
Though you
prostitute yourself, O Israel, may Judah avoid such guilt! Do not journey to
Gilgal, do not go up to Beth-
aven, and do not
swear on
oath, ‘As surely as the LORD lives!’
They have spoken words,
swearing falsely in making a covenant: thus judgment springeth up as
hemlock in the furrows of the field.
They speak mere words; with false oaths they make covenants. So judgment springs up like poisonous weeds in the furrows of a field.
Thy bow was made quite naked, according to the
oaths of the tribes, even thy word.
Selah. Thou
didst cleave the earth with rivers.
You
brandished Your bow; You called for many arrows.
Selah You split the earth with rivers.
And let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbour; and love no false
oath: for all these are things that I
hate, saith the LORD.
do not plot evil in your hearts against your
neighbor, and do not love to
swear falsely, for I
hate all these things,” declares the LORD.
Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not
forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine
oaths:
Again, you have heard that it was said to the ancients, ‘Do not break your
oath, but
fulfill your vows to the Lord.’
so much that he promised with an oath to give to her whatever she asked.
And the king was
sorry: nevertheless for the
oath’s sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.
The king was
grieved, but because of his
oaths and his guests, he ordered that her wish be granted
Woe to you, blind guides! You say, ‘If
anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but if
anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his
oath.’
And,
Whosoever shall
swear by the altar, it is nothing; but
whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
And you say, ‘If
anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but if
anyone swears by the gift on it, he is bound by his
oath.’
But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I
adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.
But Jesus remained silent. Then the high priest said to Him, “I charge You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God.”
And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man.
And again he denied it with an oath: “I do not know the man!”
And the king was exceeding
sorry; yet for his
oath’s sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not
reject her.
The king was consumed with sorrow, but because of his oaths and his guests, he did not want to refuse her.
The
oath which he
sware to our father Abraham,
the
oath He
swore to our father Abraham, to grant us
Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had
sworn with an
oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;
But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that He would place one of his descendants on his throne.
And when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a
curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.
When
daylight came, the Jews formed a
conspiracy and bound themselves with an
oath not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul.
And they came to the chief priests and elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a great
curse, that we will eat nothing until we have slain Paul.
They went to the chief priests and elders and said, “We have bound ourselves with a solemn oath not to eat anything until we have killed Paul.
But do not thou yield unto them: for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, which have bound themselves with an oath, that they will neither eat nor drink till they have killed him: and now are they ready, looking for a promise from thee.
Do not let them
persuade you, because more than forty men are waiting to
ambush him. They have bound themselves with an
oath not to eat or drink until they have killed him; they are ready now,
awaiting your consent.”
So I
sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)
So I
swore on
oath in My anger, ‘They shall never enter My rest.’”
