And if the latter husband
hate her, and write her a bill of
divorcement, and giveth it in her hand, and sendeth her
out of his house; or if the latter husband die, which took her to be his wife;
and the second man hates her, writes her a
certificate of
divorce, hands it to her, and sends her away from his house, or if he dies,
When a man hath taken a new wife, he shall not go
out to war, neither shall he be charged with any business: but he shall be free at home one year, and shall
cheer up his wife which he hath taken.
If a man is newly married, he must not be sent to war or be pressed into any duty. For one year he is free to stay at home and bring joy to the wife he has married.
Remember what the LORD thy God did unto
Miriam by the way, after that ye were come forth
out of Egypt.

Thou shalt stand abroad, and the man to whom thou
dost lend shall bring
out the
pledge abroad unto thee.
You are to stand
outside while the man to whom you are
lending brings the security
out to you.
At his day thou shalt give him his
hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and setteth his heart upon it: lest he cry against thee unto the LORD, and it be sin unto thee.
You are to pay his wages each day before
sunset, because he is poor and depends on them. Otherwise he may cry
out to the LORD against you, and you will be guilty of sin.

If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband’s brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an husband’s brother unto her.
When brothers dwell together and one of them dies without a son, the widow must not marry
outside the family. Her husband’s brother is to take her as his wife and
fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law for her.
And it shall be, that the
firstborn which she beareth shall succeed in the name of his brother which is dead, that his name be not put
out of Israel.
The first son she bears will carry on the name of the dead brother, so that his name will not be
blotted out from Israel.
When men
strive together one with another, and the wife of the one draweth near for to deliver her husband
out of the hand of him that smiteth him, and putteth forth her hand, and taketh him by the secrets:
If two men are fighting, and the wife of one steps in to
rescue her husband from the one striking him, and she reaches
out her hand and grabs his
genitals,
Remember what Amalek did unto thee by the way, when ye were come forth out of Egypt;
Remember what the
Amalekites did to you along your way from Egypt,
Therefore it shall be, when the LORD thy God hath given thee rest from all thine enemies round about, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it, that thou shalt
blot out the
remembrance of Amalek from under heaven; thou shalt not
forget it.
When the LORD your God gives you rest from the enemies around you in the land that He is giving you to possess as an inheritance, you are to
blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven. Do not
forget!

Then the priest shall take the
basket from your hands and place it before the altar of the LORD your God,
And when we
cried unto the LORD God of our fathers, the LORD heard our voice, and looked on our
affliction, and our labour, and our oppression:
So we called
out to the LORD, the God of our fathers; and the LORD heard our voice and saw our
affliction,
toil, and oppression.
And the LORD brought us forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with great terribleness, and with signs, and with wonders:
Then the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with great terror, signs, and wonders.
Then thou shalt say before the LORD thy God, I have brought away the
hallowed things
out of mine house, and also have given them unto the
Levite, and unto the stranger, to the fatherless, and to the widow, according to all thy commandments which thou hast commanded me: I have not
transgressed thy commandments, neither have I forgotten them:
Then you shall declare in the presence of the LORD your God, “I have removed from my house the sacred portion and have given it to the
Levite, the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow, according to all the commandments You have given me. I have not
transgressed or forgotten Your commandments.
Cursed be he that maketh the blind to

Amen.
‘
Cursed is he who lets a blind man
wander in the road.’ And let all the people say, ‘
Amen!’
Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out.
You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.
The LORD shall cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be
smitten before thy face: they shall come
out against thee one way, and
flee before thee seven ways.
The LORD will cause the enemies who rise up against you to be defeated before you. They will march
out against you in one direction but
flee from you in seven.
Cursed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and
cursed shalt thou be when thou goest
out.
You will be
cursed when you come in and
cursed when you go
out.
The LORD shall cause thee to be
smitten before thine enemies: thou shalt go
out one way against them, and
flee seven ways before them: and shalt be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.
The LORD will cause you to be defeated before your enemies. You will march
out against them in one direction but
flee from them in seven. You will be an object of
horror to all the kingdoms of the earth.
Thou shalt carry much seed
out into the field, and shalt gather but little in; for the
locust shall
consume it.
You will
sow much seed in the field but harvest little, because the locusts will
consume it.
And toward her young one that cometh
out from between her feet, and toward her children which she shall bear: for she shall eat them for want of all things secretly in the siege and straitness,
wherewith thine enemy shall distress thee in thy gates.
the
afterbirth that comes from between her legs and the children she bears, because she will secretly eat them for lack of anything else in the siege and distress that your enemy will
inflict on you within your gates.
And I have led you forty years in the wilderness: your clothes are not
waxen old upon you, and thy
shoe is not
waxen old upon thy foot.
For forty years I led you in the wilderness, yet your clothes and
sandals did not wear
out.
And when ye came unto this place, Sihon the king of
Heshbon, and
Og the king of
Bashan, came
out against us unto battle, and we
smote them:
When you reached this place, Sihon king of
Heshbon and
Og king of
Bashan came
out against us in battle, but we defeated them.
The LORD will not
spare him, but then the anger of the LORD and his jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon him, and the LORD shall
blot out his name from under heaven.
The LORD will never be willing to
forgive him. Instead, His anger and jealousy will burn against that man, and every
curse written in this book will fall upon him. The LORD will
blot out his name from under heaven
And the LORD shall separate him unto evil out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in this book of the law:
and single him
out from all the tribes of Israel for
disaster, according to all the curses of the covenant written in this Book of the Law.
Even all nations shall say, Wherefore hath the LORD done thus unto this land? what meaneth the heat of this great anger?
So all the nations will ask, ‘Why has the LORD done such a thing to this land? Why this great
outburst of anger?’
Then men shall say, Because they have
forsaken the covenant of the LORD God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them forth
out of the land of Egypt:
And the people will answer, ‘It is because they abandoned the covenant of the LORD, the God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt.
And the LORD rooted them
out of their land in anger, and in wrath, and in great
indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.
The LORD uprooted them from their land in His anger,
rage, and great wrath, and He cast them into another land, where they are
today.’
If any of thine be driven
out unto the
outmost parts of heaven, from thence will the LORD thy God gather thee, and from thence will he
fetch thee:
Even if you have been banished to the
farthest horizon, He will gather you and return you from there.
And he said unto them, I am an hundred and twenty years old this day; I can no more go out and come in: also the LORD hath said unto me, Thou shalt not go over this Jordan.
he said to them, “I am now a hundred and twenty years old; I am no longer able to come and go, and the LORD has said to me, ‘You shall not cross the Jordan.’
And it shall come to pass, when many evils and troubles are
befallen them, that this song shall
testify against them as a witness; for it shall not be forgotten
out of the mouths of their seed: for I know their imagination which they go about, even now, before I have brought them into the land which I
sware.
And when many troubles and afflictions have come upon them, this song will
testify against them, because it will not be forgotten from the lips of their descendants. For I know their inclination, even before I bring them into the land that I
swore to give them.”
He made him
ride on the high places of the earth, that he might eat the increase of the fields; and he made him to
suck honey
out of the rock, and oil
out of the
flinty rock;
He made him
ride on the heights of the land and fed him the produce of the field. He
nourished him with honey from the rock and oil from the

The sword without, and terror within, shall destroy both the young man and the virgin, the
suckling also with the man of gray hairs.
Outside, the sword will take their children, and inside, terror will strike the young man and the young woman, the infant and the gray-haired man.
I said, I would
scatter them into corners, I would make the
remembrance of them to cease from among men:
I would have said that I would cut them to pieces and
blot out their memory from mankind,
See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I
heal: neither is there any that can deliver
out of my hand.
See now that I am He; there is no God besides Me. I bring death and I give life; I wound and I
heal, and there is no one who can deliver from My hand.
The eternal God is thy refuge, and
underneath are the
everlasting arms: and he shall thrust
out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.
The eternal God is your dwelling place, and
underneath are the
everlasting arms. He drives
out the enemy before you, giving the command, ‘Destroy him!’
This book of the law shall not depart
out of thy mouth; but thou shalt
meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
This Book of the Law must not depart from your mouth;
meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. For then you will
prosper and succeed in all you do.
And Joshua the son of
Nun sent
out of
Shittim two men to
spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even
Jericho. And they went, and came into an
harlot’s house, named
Rahab, and
lodged there.
And it was told the king of
Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in
hither to night of the children of Israel to search
out the country.
And it was reported to the king of
Jericho: “Behold, some men of Israel have come here
tonight to
spy out the land.”
And the king of
Jericho sent unto
Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to thee, which are entered into thine house: for they be come to search
out all the country.
So the king of
Jericho sent to
Rahab and said, “Bring
out the men who came to you and entered your house, for they have come to
spy out the whole land.”
And it came to pass about the time of
shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went
out:
whither the men went I
wot not: pursue after them quickly; for ye shall overtake them.
At
dusk, when the gate was about to close, the men went
out, and I do not know which way they went. Pursue them quickly, and you may catch them!”
But she had brought them up to the roof of the house, and
hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof.
(But
Rahab had taken them up to the roof and hidden them among the stalks of flax that she had laid
out there.)
And the men pursued after them the way to Jordan unto the fords: and as soon as they which pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate.
So the king’s men set
out in pursuit of the
spies along the road to the fords of the Jordan, and as soon as they had gone
out, the gate was shut.
For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came
out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the
Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and
Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.
For we have heard how the LORD dried up the waters of the Red Sea before you when you came
out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and
Og, the two kings of the
Amorites across the Jordan, whom you devoted to destruction.
And it shall be, that
whosoever shall go
out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless: and
whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him.
If
anyone goes
out the door of your house into the street, his blood will be on his own head, and we will be innocent. But if a hand is laid on
anyone with you in the house, his blood will be on our heads.
And they went, and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not.
So the
spies went
out into the hill country and stayed there three days, until their pursuers had returned without finding them, having searched all along the road.
And they commanded the people, saying, When ye see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the priests the Levites bearing it, then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it.
and commanded the people: “When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God being carried by the
Levitical priests, you are to set
out from your positions and follow it.
And Joshua said,
Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive
out from before you the
Canaanites, and the
Hittites, and the
Hivites, and the
Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the
Amorites, and the Jebusites.
Now therefore take you twelve men out of the tribes of Israel, out of every tribe a man.
Now choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe.
Take you twelve men out of the people, out of every tribe a man,
“Choose twelve men from among the people, one from each tribe,
And command ye them, saying, Take you hence
out of the midst of Jordan,
out of the place where the priests’ feet stood firm, twelve stones, and ye shall carry them over with you, and leave them in the
lodging place, where ye shall
lodge this night.
and command them: ‘Take up for
yourselves twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan where the priests were standing, carry them with you, and set them down in the place where you
spend the night.’”
Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, out of every tribe a man:
So Joshua summoned the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe,
And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones
out of the midst of Jordan, as the LORD spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them unto the place where they
lodged, and laid them down there.
Thus the Israelites did as Joshua had commanded them. They took up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, one for each tribe of Israel, just as the LORD had told Joshua; and they carried them to the camp, where they set them down.
Command the priests that bear the ark of the testimony, that they come up out of Jordan.
“Command the priests who carry the ark of the Testimony to come up from the Jordan.”
Joshua therefore commanded the priests, saying, Come ye up out of Jordan.
So Joshua commanded the priests, “Come up from the Jordan.”
And it came to pass, when the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD were come up out of the midst of Jordan, and the soles of the priests’ feet were lifted up unto the dry land, that the waters of Jordan returned unto their place, and flowed over all his banks, as they did before.
When the priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD came up out of the Jordan and their feet touched the dry land, the waters of the Jordan returned to their course and overflowed all the banks as before.
And the people came up
out of Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and
encamped in
Gilgal, in the east border of
Jericho.
On the tenth day of the first month the people went up from the Jordan and camped at
Gilgal on the eastern border of
Jericho.
And those twelve stones, which they took
out of Jordan, did Joshua pitch in
Gilgal.
And there at
Gilgal Joshua set up the twelve stones they had taken from the Jordan.
And this is the cause why Joshua did
circumcise: All the people that came
out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came
out of Egypt.
Now this is why Joshua
circumcised them: All those who came
out of Egypt—all the men of war—had died on the journey in the wilderness after they had left Egypt.
Now all the people that came
out were
circumcised: but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth
out of Egypt, them they had not
circumcised.
Though all who had come
out were
circumcised, none of those born in the wilderness on the journey from Egypt had been
circumcised.
For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came
out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: unto whom the LORD
sware that he would not
shew them the land, which the LORD
sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey.
For the Israelites had
wandered in the wilderness forty years, until all the nation’s men of war who had come
out of Egypt had died, since they did not obey the LORD. So the LORD
vowed never to let them see the land He had
sworn to their fathers to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.
Now
Jericho was straitly shut up because of the children of Israel: none went
out, and none came in.
Now
Jericho was
tightly shut up because of the Israelites. No one went
out and no one came in.
And Joshua had commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not
shout, nor make any noise with your voice, neither shall any word proceed
out of your mouth, until the day I
bid you
shout; then shall ye
shout.
But Joshua had commanded the people: “Do not give a battle cry or let your voice be heard; do not let one word come
out of your mouth until the day I tell you to
shout. Then you are to
shout!”
But Joshua had said unto the two men that had
spied out the country, Go into the
harlot’s house, and bring
out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye
sware unto her.
Meanwhile, Joshua told the two men who had
spied out the land, “Go into the house of the
prostitute and bring
out the woman and all who are with her, just as you promised her.”
And the young men that were
spies went in, and brought
Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; and they brought
out all her kindred, and left them without the camp of Israel.
So the young
spies went in and brought
out Rahab, her father and mother and brothers, and all who belonged to her. They brought
out her whole family and settled them
outside the camp of Israel.
And Joshua saved
Rahab the
harlot alive, and her father’s household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day; because she
hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to
spy out Jericho.
And Joshua
spared Rahab the
prostitute, with her father’s household and all who belonged to her, because she
hid the men Joshua had sent to
spy out Jericho. So she has lived among the Israelites to this day.
And Joshua sent men from
Jericho to
Ai, which is beside Beth-
aven, on the east side of
Bethel, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed
Ai.
Meanwhile, Joshua sent men from
Jericho to
Ai, which is near Beth-
aven to the east of
Bethel, and told them, “Go up and
spy out the land.” So the men went up and
spied out Ai.
And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and
smite Ai; and make not all the people to labour thither; for they are but few.
On returning to Joshua, they reported, “There is no need to send all the people; two or three thousand men are enough to go up and attack
Ai. Since the people of
Ai are so few, you need not wear
out all our people there.”
For the
Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall
environ us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what
wilt thou do unto thy great name?
When the
Canaanites and all who live in the land hear about this, they will
surround us and
wipe out our name from the earth. Then what will You do for Your great name?”
And it shall be, that he that is taken with the
accursed thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath: because he hath
transgressed the covenant of the LORD, and because he hath wrought folly in Israel.
The one who is caught with the things devoted to destruction must be burned, along with all that belongs to him, because he has
transgressed the covenant of the LORD and committed an
outrage in Israel.’”
And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the LORD.
They took the things from inside the tent, brought them to Joshua and all the Israelites, and spread them out before the LORD.
So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against
Ai: and Joshua chose
out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.
So Joshua and the whole army set
out to attack
Ai. Joshua chose 30,000 mighty men of
valor and sent them
out at night
And I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city: and it shall come to pass, when they come
out against us, as at the first, that we will
flee before them,
Then I and all the troops with me will advance on the city. When they come
out against us as they did the first time, we will
flee from them.
(For they will come
out after us) till we have drawn them from the city; for they will say, They
flee before us, as at the first: therefore we will
flee before them.
They will pursue us until we have drawn them away from the city, for they will say, ‘The Israelites are running away from us as they did before.’ So as we
flee from them,
Joshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in
ambush, and abode between
Bethel and
Ai, on the west side of
Ai: but Joshua
lodged that night among the people.
So Joshua sent them
out, and they went to the place of
ambush and lay in wait between
Bethel and
Ai, to the west of
Ai. But Joshua spent that night among the people.
And it came to pass, when the king of
Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went
out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he
wist not that there were liers in
ambush against him behind the city.
When the king of
Ai saw the Israelites, he
hurried out early in the morning with the men of the city to
engage them in battle at an appointed place overlooking the Arabah. But he did not know that an
ambush had been set up against him behind the city.
And there was not a man left in
Ai or
Bethel, that went not
out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.
Not a man was left in
Ai or
Bethel who did not go
out after Israel, leaving the city wide open while they pursued Israel.
And the LORD said unto Joshua, Stretch
out the
spear that is in thy hand toward
Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And Joshua stretched
out the
spear that he had in his hand toward the city.
Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Hold
out your battle
lance toward
Ai, for into your hand I will deliver the city.” So Joshua held
out his battle
lance toward
Ai,
And the
ambush arose quickly
out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched
out his hand: and they entered into the city, and took it, and hasted and set the city on fire.
and as soon as he did so, the men in
ambush rose quickly from their position. They
rushed forward, entered the city, captured it, and immediately set it on fire.
And the other issued
out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they
smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.
Meanwhile, those in the
ambush came
out of the city against them, and the men of
Ai were
trapped between the
Israelite forces on both sides. So Israel struck them down until no
survivor or
fugitive remained.
For Joshua drew not his hand back,
wherewith he stretched
out the
spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of
Ai.
Joshua did not draw back the hand that held his battle
lance until he had devoted to destruction all who lived in
Ai.
They did work
wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their
asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;
This our bread we took hot for our provision
out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is
mouldy:
This bread of ours was warm when we
packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But take a look, it is now dry and
moldy.
And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our
shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey.
These wineskins were new when we filled them, but look, they are
cracked. And these clothes and
sandals are worn
out from our very long journey.”
And the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were
Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjath-jearim.
So the Israelites set
out and on the third day arrived at their cities—
Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim.
And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the LORD thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were
sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.
The Gibeonites answered, “Your servants were told clearly that the LORD your God had commanded His servant Moses to give you all the land and
wipe out all its inhabitants before you. So we greatly feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we have done this.
And so did he unto them, and delivered them
out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they
slew them not.
So Joshua did this and delivered them from the hands of the Israelites, and they did not kill the Gibeonites.
Then said Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out those five kings unto me out of the cave.
Then Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me.”
And they did so, and brought forth those five kings unto him
out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of
Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of
Lachish, and the king of
Eglon.
So they brought the five kings
out of the cave—the kings of Jerusalem,
Hebron, Jarmuth,
Lachish, and
Eglon.
And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.
When they had brought the kings to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had accompanied him, “Come here and put your feet on the necks of these kings.” So the commanders came forward and put their feet on their necks.
And they went
out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand that is upon the sea shore in multitude, with horses and
chariots very many.
So these kings came
out with all their armies, a multitude as numerous as the sand on the
seashore, along with a great number of horses and
chariots.
All the inhabitants of the hill country from
Lebanon unto Misrephoth-
maim, and all the Sidonians, them will I drive
out from before the children of Israel: only divide thou it by lot unto the Israelites for an inheritance, as I have commanded thee.
All the inhabitants of the hill country from
Lebanon to Misrephoth-
maim—all the Sidonians—I Myself will drive
out before the Israelites. Be sure to divide it by lot as an inheritance to Israel, as I have commanded you.
All the kingdom of
Og in
Bashan, which reigned in
Ashtaroth and in Edrei, who remained of the
remnant of the giants: for these did Moses
smite, and cast them
out.
the whole kingdom of
Og in
Bashan, who had reigned in
Ashtaroth and Edrei and had remained as a
remnant of the
Rephaim. Moses had struck them down and dispossessed them,
Nevertheless the children of Israel expelled not the Geshurites, nor the Maachathites: but the Geshurites and the Maachathites dwell among the Israelites until this day.
but the Israelites did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites. So Geshur and Maacath dwell among the Israelites to this day.
Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh-barnea to
espy out the land; and I brought him word again as it was in mine heart.
I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh-barnea to
spy out the land, and I brought back to him an
honest report.
As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in.
still as strong
today as I was the day Moses sent me
out. As my strength was then, so it is now for war, for going
out, and for coming in.
Now therefore give me this mountain,
whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and
fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them
out, as the LORD said.
Now therefore give me this hill country that the LORD promised me on that day, for you
yourself heard then that the
Anakim were there, with great and fortified cities. Perhaps with the LORD’s help I will drive them
out, as the LORD has spoken.”
