And he ordained him priests for the high places, and for the devils, and for the
calves which he had made.
And
Jeroboam appointed his
own priests for the high places and for the goat demons and
calf idols he had made.
And they buried him in his
own sepulchres, which he had made for himself in the city of David, and laid him in the bed which was filled with sweet odours and
divers kinds of spices prepared by the
apothecaries’ art: and they made a very great burning for him.
And he was buried in the tomb that he had cut out for himself in the City of David. They laid him on a
bier that was full of spices and various
blended perfumes; then they made a great fire in his honor.
In his days the Edomites revolted from under the dominion of Judah, and made themselves a king.
In the days of Jehoram,
Edom rebelled against the hand of Judah and appointed their
own king.
And when they were departed from him, (for they left him in great diseases,) his
own servants
conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and
slew him on his bed, and he died: and they buried him in the city of David, but they buried him not in the
sepulchres of the kings.
And when the Arameans had withdrawn, they left
Joash severely wounded. His
own servants
conspired against him for
shedding the blood of the son of Jehoiada the priest, and they killed him on his bed. So he died and was buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.
But he
slew not their children, but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, where the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for his
own sin.
Yet he did not put their sons to death, but acted according to what is written in the Law, in the Book of Moses, where the LORD commanded: “Fathers must not be put to death for their children, and children must not be put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin.”
Now it came to pass, after that
Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of
Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down himself before them, and burned incense unto them.
When
Amaziah returned from the slaughter of the Edomites, he brought back the gods of the Seirites, set them up as his
own gods, bowed before them, and burned sacrifices to them.
Wherefore the anger of the LORD was
kindled against
Amaziah, and he sent unto him a prophet, which said unto him, Why hast thou sought after the gods of the people, which could not deliver their
own people out of thine hand?
Therefore the anger of the LORD burned against
Amaziah, and He sent him a prophet, who said, “Why have you sought this people’s gods, which could not deliver them from your hand?”
And Judah was put to the worse before Israel, and they fled every man to his tent.
And Judah was routed before Israel, and every man fled to his own home.
But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction: for he
transgressed against the LORD his God, and went into the temple of the LORD to burn incense upon the altar of incense.
But when Uzziah grew powerful, his
arrogance led to his
own destruction. He was unfaithful to the LORD his God, for he entered the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense.
And
Ahaz gathered together the vessels of the house of God, and cut in pieces the vessels of the house of God, and shut up the doors of the house of the LORD, and he made him altars in every corner of Jerusalem.
Then
Ahaz gathered up the articles of the house of God, cut them into pieces, shut the doors of the house of the LORD, and set up altars of his
own on every street corner in Jerusalem.
Wherefore the wrath of the LORD was upon Judah and Jerusalem, and he hath delivered them to trouble, to
astonishment, and to
hissing, as ye see with your eyes.
Therefore, the wrath of the LORD has fallen upon Judah and Jerusalem, and He has made them an object of terror,
horror, and
mockery, as you can see with your
own eyes.
Now when all this was finished, all Israel that were present went out to the cities of Judah, and
brake the images in pieces, and cut down the groves, and threw down the high places and the altars out of all Judah and Benjamin, in Ephraim also and
Manasseh, until they had utterly destroyed them all. Then all the children of Israel returned, every man to his possession, into their
own cities.
When all this had ended, the Israelites in attendance went out to the cities of Judah and broke up the sacred pillars,
chopped down the Asherah poles, and
tore down the high places and altars throughout Judah and Benjamin, as well as in Ephraim and
Manasseh, until they had utterly destroyed them all. Then all the Israelites returned to their cities, each to his
own property.
He appointed also the king’s portion of his substance for the burnt offerings, to wit, for the morning and evening burnt offerings, and the burnt offerings for the sabbaths, and for the new moons, and for the set feasts, as it is written in the law of the LORD.
The king contributed from his own possessions for the regular morning and evening burnt offerings and for the burnt offerings on the Sabbaths, New Moons, and appointed feasts, as written in the Law of the LORD.
And the LORD sent an angel, which cut off all the mighty men of valour, and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his
own land. And when he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth of his
own bowels slew him there with the sword.
and the LORD sent an angel who
annihilated every mighty man of
valor and every leader and commander in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he withdrew to his
own land in disgrace. And when he entered the temple of his god, some of his
own sons struck him down with the sword.
So
Manasseh slept with his fathers, and they buried him in his
own house: and Amon his son reigned in his
stead.
And
Manasseh rested with his fathers and was buried at his palace. And his son Amon reigned in his place.
And his servants
conspired against him, and
slew him in his
own house.
Then the servants of Amon
conspired against him and killed him in his palace.
And
Josiah gave to the people, of the flock, lambs and kids, all for the
passover offerings, for all that were present, to the number of thirty thousand, and three thousand bullocks: these were of the king’s substance.
From his
own flocks and herds
Josiah contributed 30,000 lambs and goats
plus 3,000 bulls for the
Passover offerings for all the people who were present.
Now these are the children of the province that went up out of the captivity, of those which had been carried away, whom
Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away unto Babylon, and came again unto Jerusalem and Judah, every one unto his city;
Now these are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles carried away to Babylon by
Nebuchadnezzar its king. They returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his
own town,
So the priests, and the Levites, and some of the people, and the singers, and the
porters, and the
Nethinims, dwelt in their cities, and all Israel in their cities.
So the priests, the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants, along with some of the people, settled in their own towns; and the rest of the Israelites settled in their towns.
Also I have made a decree, that
whosoever shall alter this word, let timber be pulled down from his house, and being set up, let him be
hanged thereon; and let his house be made a
dunghill for this.
I also decree that if any man interferes with this directive, a beam is to be
torn from his house and raised up, and he is to be impaled on it. And his
own house shall be made a pile of
rubble for this
offense.
I make a decree, that all they of the people of Israel, and of his priests and Levites, in my realm, which are minded of their
own freewill to go up to Jerusalem, go with thee.
I
hereby decree that any
volunteers among the Israelites in my kingdom, including the priests and Levites, may go up with you to Jerusalem.
From above the horse gate repaired the priests, every one over against his house.
Above the Horse Gate, each of the priests made repairs in front of his own house.
After him repaired Hananiah the son of Shelemiah, and Hanun the sixth son of Zalaph, another piece. After him repaired Meshullam the son of Berechiah over against his chamber.
Next to him, Hananiah son of Shelemiah, as well as Hanun the sixth son of Zalaph, repaired another section. Next to them, Meshullam son of Berechiah made repairs opposite his own quarters.
Hear, O our God; for we are
despised: and turn their reproach upon their
own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity:
Hear us, O God, for we are
despised. Turn their
scorn back upon their
own heads, and let them be taken as
plunder to a land of captivity.
And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to
nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.
When our enemies heard that we were aware of their scheme and that God had
frustrated it, each of us returned to his
own work on the wall.
Then I consulted with myself, and I
rebuked the nobles, and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact
usury, every one of his brother. And I set a great assembly against them.
and after serious thought I
rebuked the nobles and officials, saying, “You are exacting
usury from your
own brothers!” So I called a large assembly against them
And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found nothing to answer.
and said, “We have done our best to
buy back our Jewish brothers who were sold to foreigners, but now you are selling your
own brothers, that they may be sold back to us!” But they remained silent, for they could find nothing to say.
Then I sent unto him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart.
Then I sent him this reply: “There is nothing to these rumors you are spreading; you are
inventing them in your
own mind.”
And I said, Should such a man as I
flee? and who is there, that, being as I am, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.
But I replied, “Should a man like me run away? Should one like me go into the temple to save his own life? I will not go!”
And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard thereof, and all the heathen that were about us saw these things, they were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God.
When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and
disheartened, for they realized that this task had been accomplished by our God.
And I said unto them, Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun be hot; and while they stand by, let them shut the doors, and bar them: and
appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, every one in his watch, and every one to be over against his house.
And I told them, “Do not open the gates of Jerusalem until the sun is hot. While the guards are on duty, keep the doors shut and securely fastened. And
appoint the residents of Jerusalem as guards, some at their posts and some at their
own homes.”
These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom
Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city;
These are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles carried away to Babylon by
Nebuchadnezzar its king. They returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his

So the priests, and the Levites, and the
porters, and the singers, and some of the people, and the
Nethinims, and all Israel, dwelt in their cities; and when the seventh month came, the children of Israel were in their cities.
So the priests, Levites, gatekeepers, singers, and temple servants, along with some of the people and the rest of the Israelites, settled in their own towns. And by the seventh month the Israelites had settled in their towns.
So the people went forth, and brought them, and made themselves booths, every one upon the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the street of the water gate, and in the street of the gate of Ephraim.
And the people went out, brought back branches, and made booths on their own rooftops, in their courtyards, in the court of the house of God, and in the squares by the Water Gate and by the Gate of Ephraim.
And the rulers of the people dwelt at Jerusalem: the rest of the people also cast lots, to bring one of ten to dwell in Jerusalem the holy city, and nine parts to dwell in other cities.
Now the leaders of the people settled in Jerusalem, and the rest of the people cast lots to bring one out of ten to live in the holy city of Jerusalem, while the remaining nine were to dwell in their own towns.
Now these are the chief of the province that dwelt in Jerusalem: but in the cities of Judah dwelt every one in his possession in their cities, to wit, Israel, the priests, and the Levites, and the
Nethinims, and the children of Solomon’s servants.
These are the heads of the provinces who settled in Jerusalem. (In the villages of Judah, however, each lived on his own property in their towns—the Israelites, priests, Levites, temple servants, and descendants of Solomon’s servants—
And the residue of Israel, of the priests, and the Levites, were in all the cities of Judah, every one in his inheritance.
The rest of the Israelites, with the priests and Levites, were in all the villages of Judah, each on his own inheritance.
And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them: for the Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field.
I also learned that because the portions for the Levites had not been given to them, all the Levites and singers responsible for performing the service had gone back to their own fields.
For he sent letters into all the king’s provinces, into every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language, that every man should bear rule in his own house, and that it should be published according to the language of every people.
He sent letters to all the provinces of the kingdom, to each province in its
own script and to each people in their
own language,
proclaiming that every man should be master of his
own household.
And he brought up Hadassah, that is,
Esther, his uncle’s daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the
maid was fair and beautiful; whom
Mordecai, when her father and mother were dead, took for his
own daughter.
And
Mordecai had brought up Hadassah (that is,
Esther), the daughter of his uncle, because she did not have a father or mother. The young woman was lovely in form and appearance, and when her father and mother had died,
Mordecai had taken her in as his
own daughter.
Now when the turn of
Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of
Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, was come to go in unto the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king’s
chamberlain, the keeper of the women, appointed. And
Esther obtained favour in the sight of all them that looked upon her.
Now
Esther was the daughter of Abihail, the uncle from whom
Mordecai had adopted her as his
own daughter. And when it was her turn to go to the king, she did not ask for anything except what Hegai, the king’s trusted official in charge of the
harem, had
advised. And
Esther found favor in the eyes of
everyone who saw her.
Then were the king’s
scribes called at that time in the third month, that is, the month
Sivan, on the three and
twentieth day thereof; and it was written according to all that
Mordecai commanded unto the Jews, and to the lieutenants, and the
deputies and rulers of the provinces which are from India unto
Ethiopia, an hundred twenty and seven provinces, unto every province according to the writing thereof, and unto every people after their language, and to the Jews according to their writing, and according to their language.
At once the royal
scribes were summoned, and on the twenty-third day of the third month (the month of
Sivan), they recorded all of
Mordecai’s orders to the Jews and to the satraps, governors, and princes of the 127 provinces from India to
Cush—writing to each province in its
own script, to every people in their
own language, and to the Jews in their
own script and language.
But when
Esther came before the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked
device, which he devised against the Jews, should return upon his
own head, and that he and his sons should be
hanged on the
gallows.
But when it came before the king, he commanded by letter that the wicked scheme which
Haman had devised against the Jews should come back upon his
own head, and that he and his sons should be
hanged on the
gallows.
His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she
asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.
and he
owned 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female
donkeys, and a very large number of servants. Job was the greatest man of all the people of the East.
Hast not thou made an
hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
Have You not placed a
hedge on every side around him and his household and all that he
owns? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.
And
Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin,
yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.
“Skin for skin!”
Satan replied. “A man will give up all he
owns in exchange for his life.
Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his
own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and
Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to
mourn with him and to comfort him.
Now when Job’s three friends—Eliphaz the Temanite,
Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite—heard about all this
adversity that had come upon him, each of them came from his home, and they met together to go and
sympathize with Job and comfort him.
If I
justify myself, mine
own mouth shall
condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, it shall also prove me
perverse.
Even if I were righteous, my mouth would
condemn me; if I were
blameless, it would declare me guilty.
Though I were perfect, yet would I not know my soul: I would
despise my life.
then You would
plunge me into the pit, and even my
own clothes would
despise me.
Then would I speak, and not fear him; but it is not so with me.
Then I would speak without fear of Him. But as it is, I am on my own.
My soul is
weary of my life; I will leave my
complaint upon myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.
“I
loathe my
own life; I will express my
complaint and speak in the bitterness of my soul.
Wherefore do I take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in mine hand?
Why do I put myself at risk and take my life in my own hands?
Though he
slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine
own ways before him.
Though He
slay me, I will hope in Him. I will still defend my ways to His face.
But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall
mourn.
He feels only the pain of his own body and mourns only for himself.”
Thine
own mouth condemneth thee, and not I:
yea, thine
own lips
testify against thee.
Your
own mouth, not mine, condemns you; your
own lips
testify against you.
The steps of his strength shall be
straitened, and his
own counsel shall cast him down.
For he is cast into a net by his
own feet, and he walketh upon a
snare.
For his
own feet lead him into a net, and he wanders into its
mesh.
I called my servant, and he gave me no answer; I intreated him with my mouth.
I call for my servant, but he does not answer, though I
implore him with my
own mouth.
My breath is strange to my wife, though I intreated for the children’s sake of mine own body.
Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung: they which have seen him shall say, Where is he?
he will perish
forever, like his
own dung; those who had seen him will ask, ‘Where is he?’
His children shall seek to please the poor, and his hands shall restore their goods.
His sons will seek the favor of the poor, for his own hands must return his wealth.
Lo, their good is not in their hand: the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
Still, their prosperity is not in their own hands, so I stay far from the counsel of the wicked.
His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the
Almighty.
Let his eyes see his
own destruction; let him drink for himself the wrath of the
Almighty.
He bindeth up the waters in his thick clouds; and the cloud is not rent under them.
He wraps up the waters in His clouds, yet the clouds do not
burst under their
own weight.
Then let my wife
grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.
then may my
own wife
grind grain for another, and may other men sleep with her.
If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:
if I have
devoured its produce without payment or broken the spirit of its tenants,
So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.
So these three men stopped answering Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.
Should it be according to thy mind? he will
recompense it, whether thou refuse, or whether thou choose; and not I: therefore speak what thou knowest.
Should God repay you on your
own terms when you have
disavowed His? You must choose, not I; so tell me what you know.
She is
hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers: her labour is in vain without fear;
She treats her young harshly, as if not her
own, with no
concern that her labor was in vain.
Then will I also
confess unto thee that thine
own right hand can save thee.
Then I will
confess to you that your
own right hand can save you.
So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she
asses.
So the LORD blessed Job’s latter days more than his first. He
owned 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen, and 1,000 female
donkeys.
Stand in
awe, and sin not: commune with your
own heart upon your bed, and be still.
Selah.
Be
angry, yet do not sin; on your bed, search your heart and be still.
Selah Destroy thou them, O God; let them fall by their own counsels; cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions; for they have rebelled against thee.
Declare them guilty, O God; let them fall by their own devices. Drive them out for their many transgressions, for they have rebelled against You.
He made a pit, and
digged it, and is fallen into the
ditch which he made.
He has
dug a hole and hollowed it out; he has fallen into a pit of his
own making.
His mischief shall return upon his
own head, and his violent dealing shall come down upon his
own pate.
His trouble recoils on himself, and his violence falls on his own head.
The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made: in the net which they
hid is their
own foot taken.
The nations have fallen into a pit of their making; their feet are caught in the net they have hidden.
The LORD is known by the judgment which he executeth: the wicked is
snared in the work of his
own hands. Higgaion.
Selah.
The LORD is known by the justice He brings; the wicked are ensnared by the work of their hands. Higgaion
Selah Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us?
They say, “With our tongues we will prevail. We own our lips—who can be our master?”
In whose eyes a
vile person is
contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the LORD. He that sweareth to his
own hurt, and changeth not.
who despises the
vile but honors those who fear the LORD, who does not
revise a costly oath,
They are inclosed in their own fat: with their mouth they speak proudly.
Who can understand his errors?
cleanse thou me from secret faults.
Grant thee according to thine own heart, and fulfil all thy counsel.
May He give you the desires of your heart and make all your plans succeed.
Be thou
exalted, LORD, in thine
own strength: so will we sing and praise thy power.
Be
exalted, O LORD, in Your strength; we will sing and praise Your power.
All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul.
All the rich of the earth will feast and worship; all who go down to the dust will
kneel before Him— even those unable to preserve their lives.
Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD: and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.
Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people He has chosen as His inheritance!
But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was
sackcloth: I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer returned into mine
own bosom.
Yet when they were ill, I put on
sackcloth; I humbled myself with fasting, but my prayers returned unanswered.
For he flattereth himself in his
own eyes, until his iniquity be found to be
hateful.
Their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken.
But their swords will
pierce their
own hearts, and their bows will be broken.
Let them be
desolate for a reward of their shame that say unto me,
Aha,
aha.
Yea, mine
own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his
heel against me.
Even my close friend whom I trusted, the one who shared my bread, has lifted up his
heel against me.
For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.
For it was not by their sword that they took the land; their arm did not bring them victory. It was by Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your face, because You favored them.
Hearken, O daughter, and consider, and
incline thine ear;
forget also thine
own people, and thy father’s house;
Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.
Their graves are their eternal homes— their dwellings for endless generations— even though their lands were their namesakes.
Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest thine own mother’s son.
You sit and
malign your brother; you
slander your
own mother’s son.
For, lo, they lie in wait for my soul: the mighty are gathered against me; not for my
transgression, nor for my sin, O LORD.
See how they lie in wait for me. Fierce men
conspire against me for no
transgression or sin of my
own, O LORD.
They run and prepare themselves without my fault:
awake to help me, and behold.
For no fault of my own, they move swiftly to attack me. Arise to help me, and take notice.
So they shall make their
own tongue to fall upon themselves: all that see them shall
flee away.
They will be made to
stumble, their
own tongues turned against them. All who see will
shake their heads.
Then shall the earth yield her increase; and God, even our
own God, shall
bless us.
The earth has yielded its harvest; God, our God, blesses us.
