That I may perform the oath which I have
sworn unto your fathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is this day. Then answered I, and
said, So be it, O LORD.
This was in order to establish the oath I
swore to your forefathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is to this day.” “
Amen, LORD,” I answered.
Then the LORD
said unto me,
Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, saying, Hear ye the words of this covenant, and do them.
Then the LORD
said to me, “
Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, saying: Hear the words of this covenant and carry them out.
And the LORD
said unto me, A
conspiracy is found among the men of Judah, and among the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
And the LORD told me, “There is a
conspiracy among the men of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem.
How long shall the land
mourn, and the herbs of every field wither, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein? the beasts are consumed, and the birds; because they
said, He shall not see our last end.
How long will the land
mourn and the grass of every field be
withered? Because of the evil of its residents, the animals and birds have been swept away, for the people have
said, “He cannot see what our end will be.”
Thus saith the LORD unto me, Go and get thee a linen
girdle, and put it upon thy loins, and put it not in water.
This is what the LORD
said to me: “Go and
buy yourself a linen loincloth and put it around your
waist, but do not let it touch water.”
And it came to pass after many days, that the LORD
said unto me, Arise, go to Euphrates, and take the
girdle from thence, which I commanded thee to hide there.
Many days later the LORD said to me, “Arise, go to Perath, and get the loincloth that I commanded you to hide there.”
Then said the LORD unto me, Pray not for this people for their good.
Then the LORD said to me, “Do not pray for the well-being of this people.
Then
said I,
Ah, Lord GOD! behold, the prophets say unto them, Ye shall not see the sword, neither shall ye have famine; but I will give you
assured peace in this place.
“
Ah, Lord GOD!” I replied, “Look, the prophets are telling them, ‘You will not see the sword or suffer famine, but I will give you lasting peace in this place.’”
Then the LORD
said unto me, The prophets
prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they
prophesy unto you a false vision and
divination, and a thing of
nought, and the
deceit of their heart.
Then said the LORD unto me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind could not be toward this people: cast them out of my sight, and let them go forth.
Then the LORD said to me: “Even if Moses and Samuel should stand before Me, My heart would not go out to this people. Send them from My presence, and let them go.
The LORD
said: “Surely I will deliver you for a good purpose; surely I will
intercede with your enemy in your time of trouble, in your time of distress.
Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that it shall no more be said, The LORD liveth, that brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt;
Yet behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when they will no longer say, ‘As surely as the LORD lives, who brought the Israelites up out of the land of Egypt.’
Thus said the LORD unto me; Go and stand in the gate of the children of the people, whereby the kings of Judah come in, and by the which they go out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem;
This is what the LORD said to me: “Go and stand at the gate of the people, through which the kings of Judah go in and out; and stand at all the other gates of Jerusalem.
If it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will
repent of the good,
wherewith I
said I would benefit them.
and if it does evil in My sight and does not
listen to My voice, then I will relent of the good I had intended for it.
And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own devices, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart.
But they will reply, ‘It is hopeless. We will follow our own plans, and each of us will act according to the
stubbornness of his evil heart.’”
Then
said they, Come, and let us
devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us
smite him with the tongue, and let us not give
heed to any of his words.
Then some
said, “Come, let us make plans against Jeremiah, for the law will never be lost to the priest, nor counsel to the wise, nor an
oracle to the prophet. Come, let us
denounce him and pay no
heed to any of his words.”
Then came Jeremiah from
Tophet,
whither the LORD had sent him to
prophesy; and he stood in the court of the LORD’S house; and
said to all the people,
Then Jeremiah returned from Topheth, where the LORD had sent him to
prophesy, and he stood in the
courtyard of the house of the LORD and proclaimed to all the people,
And it came to pass on the
morrow, that Pashur brought forth Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then
said Jeremiah unto him, The LORD hath not called thy name Pashur, but Magor-missabib.
The next day, when Pashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, “The LORD does not call you Pashhur, but Magor-missabib.
Then I
said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was
weary with
forbearing, and I could not stay.
If I say, “I will not mention Him or speak any more in His name,” His message becomes a fire burning in my heart, shut up in my bones, and I become
weary of holding it in, and I cannot prevail.
The word which came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, when king
Zedekiah sent unto him Pashur the son of Melchiah, and
Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, saying,
This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD when King
Zedekiah sent to him Pashhur son of Malchijah and the priest
Zephaniah son of Maaseiah. They
said,
Then
said Jeremiah unto them, Thus shall ye say to
Zedekiah:
But Jeremiah answered, “You are to tell
Zedekiah that
I spake unto thee in thy prosperity; but thou saidst, I will not hear. This hath been thy manner from thy youth, that thou obeyedst not my voice.
I
warned you when you were secure. You
said, ‘I will not
listen.’ This has been your way from youth, that you have not obeyed My voice.
They say still unto them that
despise me, The LORD hath
said, Ye shall have peace; and they say unto every one that walketh after the imagination of his own heart, No evil shall come upon you.
They keep saying to those who
despise Me, ‘The LORD says that you will have peace,’ and to
everyone who walks in the
stubbornness of his own heart, ‘No
harm will come to you.’
I have heard what the prophets
said, that
prophesy lies in my name, saying, I have dreamed, I have dreamed.
“I have heard the sayings of the prophets who
prophesy lies in My name: ‘I had a dream! I had a dream!’
But since ye say, The burden of the LORD; therefore thus saith the LORD; Because ye say this word, The burden of the LORD, and I have sent unto you, saying, Ye shall not say, The burden of the LORD;
But if you claim, ‘This is the burden of the LORD,’ then this is what the LORD says: Because you have said, ‘This is the burden of the LORD,’ and I specifically told you not to make this claim,
Then said the LORD unto me, What seest thou, Jeremiah? And I said, Figs; the good figs, very good; and the evil, very evil, that cannot be eaten, they are so evil.
“Jeremiah,” the LORD asked, “what do you see?” “Figs!” I replied. “The good figs are very good, but the bad figs are very bad, so bad they cannot be eaten.”
They said, Turn ye again now every one from his evil way, and from the evil of your doings, and dwell in the land that the LORD hath given unto you and to your fathers for ever and ever:
The prophets told you, ‘Turn now, each of you, from your evil ways and deeds, and you can dwell in the land that the LORD has given to you and your fathers
forever and ever.
For thus saith the LORD God of Israel unto me; Take the wine cup of this
fury at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send thee, to drink it.
This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me: “Take from My hand this cup of the wine of wrath, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink from it.
Then spake the priests and the prophets unto the princes and to all the people, saying, This man is worthy to die; for he hath
prophesied against this city, as ye have heard with your ears.
Then the priests and prophets
said to the officials and all the people, “This man is worthy of death, for he has
prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears!”
Then spake Jeremiah unto all the princes and to all the people, saying, The LORD sent me to
prophesy against this house and against this city all the words that ye have heard.
But Jeremiah
said to all the officials and all the people, “The LORD sent me to
prophesy against this house and against this city all the words that you have heard.
Then said the princes and all the people unto the priests and to the prophets; This man is not worthy to die: for he hath spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God.
Then the officials and all the people told the priests and prophets, “This man is not worthy of death, for he has spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God!”
Then rose up certain of the elders of the land, and spake to all the assembly of the people, saying,
Some of the elders of the land stood up and said to the whole assembly of the people,
Thus saith the LORD to me; Make thee bonds and yokes, and put them upon thy neck,
This is what the LORD
said to me: “Make for
yourself a yoke out of leather straps and put it on your neck.
Also I spake to the priests and to all this people, saying, Thus saith the LORD;
Hearken not to the words of your prophets that
prophesy unto you, saying, Behold, the vessels of the LORD’S house shall now shortly be brought again from Babylon: for they
prophesy a lie unto you.
Then I
said to the priests and to all this people, “This is what the LORD says: Do not
listen to the words of your prophets who
prophesy to you, saying, ‘Look, very soon now the articles from the house of the LORD will be brought back from Babylon.’ They are
prophesying to you a lie.
And it came to pass the same year, in the beginning of the reign of
Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fourth year, and in the fifth month, that Hananiah the son of Azur the prophet, which was of
Gibeon, spake unto me in the house of the LORD, in the presence of the priests and of all the people, saying,
In the fifth month of that same year, the fourth year, near the beginning of the reign of King
Zedekiah of Judah, the prophet Hananiah son of Azzur, who was from
Gibeon,
said to me in the house of the LORD in the presence of the priests and all the people:
Then the prophet Jeremiah said unto the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests, and in the presence of all the people that stood in the house of the LORD,
Then the prophet Jeremiah replied to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the LORD.
Even the prophet Jeremiah
said,
Amen: the LORD do so: the LORD perform thy words which thou hast
prophesied, to bring again the vessels of the LORD’S house, and all that is carried away
captive, from Babylon into this place.
“
Amen!” Jeremiah
said. “May the LORD do so! May the LORD
fulfill the words you have
prophesied, and may He restore the articles of His house and all the exiles back to this place from Babylon.
Then said the prophet Jeremiah unto Hananiah the prophet, Hear now, Hananiah; The LORD hath not sent thee; but thou makest this people to trust in a lie.
Then the prophet Jeremiah
said to the prophet Hananiah, “
Listen, Hananiah! The LORD did not send you, but you have persuaded this people to trust in a lie.
Because ye have said, The LORD hath raised us up prophets in Babylon;
Because you may say, “The LORD has raised up for us prophets in Babylon,”
Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, Because thou hast sent letters in thy name unto all the people that are at Jerusalem, and to
Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, and to all the priests, saying,
this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: “In your own name you have sent out letters to all the people of Jerusalem, to the priest
Zephaniah son of Maaseiah, and to all the priests. You
said to
Zephaniah:
In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten a
sour grape, and the children’s teeth are set on edge.
“In those days, it will no longer be
said: ‘The fathers have eaten
sour grapes, and the teeth of the children are set on edge.’
And Jeremiah said, The word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
Jeremiah replied, “The word of the LORD came to me, saying:
So Hanameel mine uncle’s son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the LORD, and
said unto me,
Buy my field, I pray thee, that is in Anathoth, which is in the country of Benjamin: for the right of inheritance is thine, and the
redemption is thine;
buy it for
thyself. Then I knew that this was the word of the LORD.
Then, as the LORD had
said, my cousin Hanamel came to me in the
courtyard of the guard and urged me, ‘Please
buy my field in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, for you own the right of inheritance and
redemption.
Buy it for
yourself.’” Then I knew that this was the word of the LORD.
And thou hast
said unto me, O Lord GOD,
Buy thee the field for money, and take witnesses; for the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.
Yet You, O Lord GOD, have
said to me, ‘
Buy for
yourself the field with silver and call in witnesses, even though the city has been delivered into the hands of the Chaldeans!’”
And I set before the sons of the house of the
Rechabites pots full of wine, and cups, and I
said unto them, Drink ye wine.
Then I set pitchers full of wine and some cups before the men of the house of the
Rechabites, and I
said to them, “Drink some wine.”
But they said, We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons for ever:
“We do not drink wine,” they replied, “for our
forefather Jonadab son of Rechab commanded us, ‘Neither you nor your descendants are ever to drink wine.
But it came to pass, when Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came up into the land, that we said, Come, and let us go to Jerusalem for fear of the army of the Chaldeans, and for fear of the army of the Syrians: so we dwell at Jerusalem.
So when
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched into the land, we
said: ‘Come, let us go into Jerusalem to escape the armies of the Chaldeans and the Arameans.’ So we have remained in Jerusalem.”
And Jeremiah
said unto the house of the
Rechabites, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Because ye have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts, and done according unto all that he hath commanded you:
Then Jeremiah
said to the house of the
Rechabites: “This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Because you have obeyed the command of your
forefather Jonadab and have kept all his commandments and have done all that he charged you to do,
And they
said unto him, Sit down now, and read it in our ears. So
Baruch read it in their ears.
“Please sit down,” they
said, “and read it in our hearing.” So
Baruch read it in their hearing.
Now it came to pass, when they had heard all the words, they were afraid both one and other, and
said unto
Baruch, We will surely tell the king of all these words.
When they had heard all these words, they turned to one another in fear and
said to
Baruch, “Surely we must report all these words to the king.”
Then
said the princes unto
Baruch, Go, hide thee, thou and Jeremiah; and let no man know where ye be.
Then the officials
said to
Baruch, “You and Jeremiah must hide
yourselves and tell no one where you are.”
And thou shalt say to
Jehoiakim the king of Judah, Thus saith the LORD; Thou hast burned this roll, saying, Why hast thou written therein, saying, The king of Babylon shall certainly come and destroy this land, and shall cause to cease from thence man and beast?
You are to
proclaim concerning
Jehoiakim king of Judah that this is what the LORD says: You have burned the
scroll and
said, ‘Why have you written on it that the king of Babylon would surely come and destroy this land and deprive it of man and beast?’
And when he was in the gate of Benjamin, a captain of the ward was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he took Jeremiah the prophet, saying, Thou fallest away to the Chaldeans.
But when he reached the Gate of Benjamin, the captain of the guard, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah, seized him and said, “You are deserting to the Chaldeans!”
Then
said Jeremiah, It is false; I fall not away to the Chaldeans. But he
hearkened not to him: so Irijah took Jeremiah, and brought him to the princes.
“That is a lie,” Jeremiah replied. “I am not deserting to the Chaldeans!” But Irijah would not
listen to him; instead, he arrested Jeremiah and took him to the officials.
Then
Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out: and the king asked him secretly in his house, and
said, Is there any word from the LORD? And Jeremiah
said, There is: for,
said he, thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.
Later, King
Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah and received him in his palace, where he asked him privately, “Is there a word from the LORD?” “There is,” Jeremiah replied. “You will be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.”
Moreover Jeremiah
said unto king
Zedekiah, What have I
offended against thee, or against thy servants, or against this people, that ye have put me in prison?
Then Jeremiah asked King
Zedekiah, “How have I
sinned against you or your servants or these people, that you have put me in prison?
Therefore the princes
said unto the king, We
beseech thee, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the
welfare of this people, but the
hurt.
Then the officials said to the king, “This man ought to die, for he is discouraging the warriors who remain in this city, as well as all the people, by speaking such words to them; this man is not seeking the well-being of these people, but their ruin.”
Then
Zedekiah the king
said, Behold, he is in your hand: for the king is not he that can do any thing against you.
“Here he is,” replied King
Zedekiah. “He is in your hands, since the king can do nothing to stop you.”
Ebed-melech went forth out of the king’s house, and spake to the king, saying,
Ebed-melech went out from the king’s palace and said to the king,
And Ebed-melech the
Ethiopian said unto Jeremiah, Put now these old cast clouts and
rotten rags under thine armholes under the cords. And Jeremiah did so.
Ebed-melech the
Cushite cried out to Jeremiah, “Put these worn-out rags and clothes under your arms to
pad the ropes.” Jeremiah did so,
Then
Zedekiah the king sent, and took Jeremiah the prophet unto him into the third entry that is in the house of the LORD: and the king
said unto Jeremiah, I will ask thee a thing; hide nothing from me.
Then King
Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the prophet and received him at the third entrance to the house of the LORD. “I am going to ask you something,”
said the king to Jeremiah. “Do not hide anything from me.”
Then Jeremiah
said unto
Zedekiah, If I declare it unto thee,
wilt thou not surely put me to death? and if I give thee counsel,
wilt thou not
hearken unto me?
“If I tell you,” Jeremiah replied, “you will surely put me to death. And even if I give you advice, you will not
listen to me.”
Then
said Jeremiah unto
Zedekiah, Thus saith the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; If thou
wilt assuredly go forth unto the king of Babylon’s princes, then thy soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and thou shalt live, and thine house:
Then Jeremiah
said to
Zedekiah, “This is what the LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you indeed surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, then you will live, this city will not be burned down, and you and your household will
survive.
And
Zedekiah the king
said unto Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews that are fallen to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they
mock me.
But King
Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the Jews who have deserted to the Chaldeans, for the Chaldeans may deliver me into their hands to
abuse me.”
But Jeremiah
said, They shall not deliver thee. Obey, I
beseech thee, the voice of the LORD, which I speak unto thee: so it shall be well unto thee, and thy soul shall live.
“They will not hand you over,” Jeremiah replied. “Obey the voice of the LORD in what I am telling you, that it may go well with you and you may live.
Then
said Zedekiah unto Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and thou shalt not die.
But if the princes hear that I have talked with thee, and they come unto thee, and say unto thee, Declare unto us now what thou hast said unto the king, hide it not from us, and we will not put thee to death; also what the king said unto thee:
If the officials hear that I have spoken with you, and they come and demand of you, ‘Tell us what you said to the king and what he said to you; do not hide it from us, or we will kill you,’
Then came all the princes unto Jeremiah, and asked him: and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they left off speaking with him; for the matter was not perceived.
When all the officials came to Jeremiah and questioned him, he relayed to them the exact words the king had commanded him to say. So they said no more to him, for no one had overheard the conversation.
And the captain of the guard took Jeremiah, and said unto him, The LORD thy God hath pronounced this evil upon this place.
The captain of the guard found Jeremiah and
said to him, “The LORD your God decreed this
disaster on this place,
Now the LORD hath brought it, and done according as he hath
said: because ye have
sinned against the LORD, and have not obeyed his voice, therefore this thing is come upon you.
and now the LORD has fulfilled it; He has done just as He
said. Because you people have
sinned against the LORD and have not obeyed His voice, this thing has happened to you.
Now while he was not yet gone back, he
said, Go back also to Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon hath made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people: or go
wheresoever it seemeth convenient unto thee to go. So the captain of the guard gave him
victuals and a reward, and let him go.
But before Jeremiah turned to go, Nebuzaradan added, “Return to Gedaliah son of
Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed over the cities of Judah, and stay with him among the people, or go
anywhere else that seems right.” Then the captain of the guard gave him a
ration and a gift and released him.
And
said unto him,
Dost thou certainly know that Baalis the king of the
Ammonites hath sent
Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to
slay thee? But Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam believed them not.
and
said to him, “Are you aware that Baalis king of the
Ammonites has sent
Ishmael son of Nethaniah to take your life?” But Gedaliah son of
Ahikam did not believe them.
Then Johanan the son of Kareah spake to Gedaliah in
Mizpah secretly, saying, Let me go, I pray thee, and I will
slay Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no man shall know it: wherefore should he
slay thee, that all the Jews which are gathered unto thee should be scattered, and the
remnant in Judah perish?
Then Johanan son of Kareah spoke privately to Gedaliah at
Mizpah. “Let me go and kill
Ishmael son of Nethaniah,” he
said. “No one will know it. Why should he take your life and
scatter all the people of Judah who have gathered to you, so that the
remnant of Judah would perish?”
But Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam said unto Johanan the son of Kareah, Thou shalt not do this thing: for thou speakest falsely of
Ishmael.
But Gedaliah son of
Ahikam said to Johanan son of Kareah, “Do not do such a thing! What you are saying about
Ishmael is a lie.”
And
Ishmael the son of Nethaniah went forth from
Mizpah to meet them,
weeping all along as he went: and it came to pass, as he met them, he
said unto them, Come to Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam.
But ten men were found among them that
said unto
Ishmael,
Slay us not: for we have treasures in the field, of wheat, and of barley, and of oil, and of honey. So he
forbare, and
slew them not among their brethren.
But ten of the men among them
said to
Ishmael, “Do not kill us, for we have hidden
treasure in the field—wheat, barley, oil, and honey!” So he
refrained from killing them with the others.
And
said unto Jeremiah the prophet, Let, we
beseech thee, our
supplication be accepted before thee, and pray for us unto the LORD thy God, even for all this
remnant; (for we are left but a few of many, as thine eyes do behold us:)
Jeremiah the prophet and
said, “May our petition come before you; pray to the LORD your God on behalf of this entire
remnant. For few of us remain of the many, as you can see with your own eyes.
Then Jeremiah the prophet
said unto them, I have heard you; behold, I will pray unto the LORD your God according to your words; and it shall come to pass, that
whatsoever thing the LORD shall answer you, I will declare it unto you; I will keep nothing back from you.
“I have heard you,” replied Jeremiah the prophet. “I will surely pray to the LORD your God as you request, and I will tell you everything that the LORD answers; I will not
withhold a word from you.”
Then they said to Jeremiah, The LORD be a true and faithful witness between us, if we do not even according to all things for the which the LORD thy God shall send thee to us.
Then they said to Jeremiah, “May the LORD be a true and faithful witness against us if we do not act upon every word that the LORD your God sends you to tell us.
And
said unto them, Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, unto whom ye sent me to present your
supplication before him;
Jeremiah told them, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to present your petition:
The LORD hath
said concerning you, O ye
remnant of Judah; Go ye not into Egypt: know certainly that I have
admonished you this day.
The LORD has told you, O
remnant of Judah, ‘Do not go to Egypt.’ Know for sure that I have
warned you
today!
Then spake
Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the proud men, saying unto Jeremiah, Thou speakest falsely: the LORD our God hath not sent thee to say, Go not into Egypt to
sojourn there:
Azariah son of Hoshaiah, Johanan son of Kareah, and all the
arrogant men
said to Jeremiah, “You are lying! The LORD our God has not sent you to say, ‘You must not go to Egypt to reside there.’
Then all the men which knew that their wives had burned incense unto other gods, and all the women that stood by, a great multitude, even all the people that dwelt in the land of Egypt, in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying,
Then all the men who knew that their wives were burning incense to other gods, and all the women standing by—a great assembly—along with all the people living in the land of Egypt and in Pathros, said to Jeremiah,
And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven, and poured out drink offerings unto her, did we make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink offerings unto her, without our men?
“Moreover,”
said the women, “when we burned incense to the Queen of Heaven and poured out drink offerings to her, was it without our husbands’ knowledge that we made
sacrificial cakes in her image and poured out drink offerings to her?”
Then Jeremiah said unto all the people, to the men, and to the women, and to all the people which had given him that answer, saying,
Then Jeremiah said to all the people, both men and women, who were answering him,
Moreover Jeremiah said unto all the people, and to all the women, Hear the word of the LORD, all Judah that are in the land of Egypt:
Then Jeremiah said to all the people, including all the women, “Hear the word of the LORD, all those of Judah who are in the land of Egypt.
Thou
didst say,
Woe is me now! for the LORD hath added grief to my sorrow; I
fainted in my
sighing, and I find no rest.
You have
said, ‘
Woe is me because the LORD has added sorrow to my pain! I am worn out with
groaning and have found no rest.’”
He made many to fall,
yea, one fell upon another: and they
said, Arise, and let us go again to our own people, and to the land of our
nativity, from the
oppressing sword.
They continue to
stumble; indeed, they have fallen over one another. They say, ‘Get up! Let us return to our people and to the land of our birth, away from the sword of the
oppressor.’
And the
spoiler shall come upon every city, and no city shall escape: the valley also shall perish, and the plain shall be destroyed, as the LORD hath spoken.
The destroyer will move against every city, and not one town will escape. The valley will also be ruined, and the high plain will be destroyed, as the LORD has said.
All who found them
devoured them, and their enemies
said, ‘We are not guilty, for they have
sinned against the LORD, their true pasture, the LORD, the hope of their fathers.’
And Jeremiah said to Seraiah, When thou comest to Babylon, and shalt see, and shalt read all these words;
And Jeremiah
said to Seraiah, “When you get to Babylon, see that you read all these words
aloud,
And I said, My strength and my hope is perished from the LORD:
So I say, “My strength has perished, along with my hope from the LORD.”
Waters flowed over mine head; then I said, I am cut off.
The waters flowed over my head, and I thought I was going to die.
Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee: thou saidst, Fear not.
You drew near when I called on You; You said, “Do not be afraid.”
They
cried unto them, Depart ye; it is unclean; depart, depart, touch not: when they fled away and
wandered, they
said among the heathen, They shall no more
sojourn there.
“Go away! Unclean!” men
shouted at them. “Away, away! Do not touch us!” So they fled and
wandered. Among the nations it was
said, “They can stay here no longer.”
The breath of our nostrils, the
anointed of the LORD, was taken in their pits, of whom we
said, Under his shadow we shall live among the heathen.
The LORD’s
anointed, the breath of our life, was captured in their pits. We had
said of him, “Under his shadow we will live among the nations.”
And he said unto me, Son of man, stand upon thy feet, and I will speak unto thee.
“Son of man,” He said to me, “stand up on your feet and I will speak to you.”
And he
said unto me, Son of man, I send thee to the children of Israel, to a
rebellious nation that hath rebelled against me: they and their fathers have
transgressed against me, even unto this very day.
“Son of man,” He
said to me, “I am sending you to the Israelites, to a
rebellious nation that has rebelled against Me. To this very day they and their fathers have rebelled against Me.
Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, eat that thou findest; eat this roll, and go speak unto the house of Israel.
“Son of man,” He
said to me, “eat what you find here. Eat this
scroll, then go and speak to the house of Israel.”
And he
said unto me, Son of man, cause thy
belly to eat, and fill thy
bowels with this roll that I give thee. Then did I eat it; and it was in my mouth as honey for sweetness.
“Son of man,” He
said to me, “eat and fill your stomach with this
scroll I am giving you.” So I
ate, and it was as sweet as honey in my mouth.
