Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God.
Finally these men said, “We will never find any charge against this Daniel, unless we find something against him concerning the law of his God.”
Then these presidents and princes assembled together to the king, and
said thus unto him, King
Darius, live for ever.
So the administrators and satraps went together to the king and
said, “O King
Darius, may you live
forever!
Then they came near, and spake before the king concerning the king’s decree; Hast thou not signed a decree, that every man that shall ask a petition of any God or man within thirty days, save of thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.
So they approached the king and asked about his royal decree: “Did you not sign a decree that for thirty days any man who petitions any god or man except you, O king, will be thrown into the den of lions?” The king replied, “According to the law of the Medes and Persians the order stands, and it cannot be
repealed.”
Then answered they and said before the king, That Daniel, which is of the children of the captivity of Judah, regardeth not thee, O king, nor the decree that thou hast signed, but maketh his petition three times a day.
Then they told the king, “Daniel, one of the exiles from Judah, shows no regard for you, O king, or for the decree that you have signed. He still makes his petition three times a day.”
Then these men assembled unto the king, and said unto the king, Know, O king, that the law of the Medes and Persians is, That no decree nor statute which the king establisheth may be changed.
Then the men approached the king together and
said to him, “Remember, O king, that by the law of the Medes and Persians no decree or
ordinance established by the king can be changed.”
Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spake and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee.
So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the den of lions. The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually, deliver you!”
And when he came to the den, he
cried with a
lamentable voice unto Daniel: and the king spake and
said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions?
When he reached the den, he
cried out in a voice of
anguish, “O Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to deliver you from the lions?”
Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever.
Then Daniel replied, “O king, may you live
forever!
Daniel spake and
said, I saw in my vision by night, and, behold, the four winds of the heaven
strove upon the great sea.
Daniel declared: “In my vision in the night I looked, and suddenly the four winds of heaven were
churning up the great sea.
And behold another beast, a second, like to a bear, and it raised up itself on one side, and it had three ribs in the mouth of it between the teeth of it: and they
said thus unto it, Arise,
devour much flesh.
Suddenly another beast appeared, which looked like a bear. It was raised up on one of its sides, and it had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. So it was told, ‘Get up and
gorge yourself on flesh!’
Thus he
said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be
diverse from all kingdoms, and shall
devour the whole earth, and shall
tread it down, and break it in pieces.
This is what he
said: ‘The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom that will appear on the earth, different from all the other kingdoms, and it will
devour the whole earth,
trample it down, and
crush it.
Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint
said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the
transgression of
desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be
trodden under foot?
Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one
said to him, “How long until the
fulfillment of the vision of the daily sacrifice, the rebellion that causes
desolation, and the surrender of the sanctuary and of the host to be
trampled?”
And he
said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be
cleansed.
He said to me, “It will take 2,300 evenings and mornings; then the sanctuary will be properly restored.”
And I heard a man’s voice between the banks of Ulai, which called, and
said,
Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision.
And I heard the voice of a man calling from between the banks of the Ulai: “
Gabriel, explain the vision to this man.”
So he came near where I stood: and when he came, I was afraid, and fell upon my face: but he said unto me, Understand, O son of man: for at the time of the end shall be the vision.
As he came near to where I stood, I was
terrified and fell facedown. “Son of man,” he
said to me, “understand that the vision concerns the time of the end.”
And he
said, Behold, I will make thee know what shall be in the last end of the
indignation: for at the time appointed the end shall be.
and said, “Behold, I will make known to you what will happen in the latter time of wrath, because it concerns the appointed time of the end.
And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession, and
said, O Lord, the great and
dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments;
And I prayed to the LORD my God and
confessed, “O, Lord, the great and
awesome God, who keeps His covenant of loving devotion to those who love Him and keep His commandments,
And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding.
He
instructed me and spoke with me, saying: “O Daniel, I have come now to give you insight and understanding.
And he
said unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright: for unto thee am I now sent. And when he had spoken this word unto me, I stood
trembling.
He
said to me, “Daniel, you are a man who is highly precious. Consider carefully the words that I am about to say to you. Stand up, for I have now been sent to you.” And when he had
said this to me, I stood up
trembling.
Then
said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou
didst set thine heart to understand, and to
chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words.
“Do not be afraid, Daniel,” he
said, “for from the first day that you purposed to understand and to humble
yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in
response to them.
And, behold, one like the
similitude of the sons of men touched my lips: then I opened my mouth, and spake, and
said unto him that stood before me, O my lord, by the vision my sorrows are turned upon me, and I have retained no strength.
And suddenly one with the likeness of a man touched my lips, and I opened my mouth and
said to the one standing before me, “My lord, because of the vision, I am overcome with
anguish, and I have no strength.
And
said, O man greatly beloved, fear not: peace be unto thee, be strong,
yea, be strong. And when he had spoken unto me, I was strengthened, and
said, Let my lord speak; for thou hast strengthened me.
“Do not be afraid, you who are highly precious,” he said. “Peace be with you! Be strong now; be very strong!” As he spoke with me, I was strengthened and said, “Speak, my lord, for you have strengthened me.”
Then
said he, Knowest thou wherefore I come unto thee? and now will I return to fight with the prince of Persia: and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of
Grecia shall come.
“Do you know why I have come to you?” he said. “I must return at once to fight against the prince of Persia, and when I have gone forth, behold, the prince of Greece will come.
And one said to the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, How long shall it be to the end of these wonders?
One of them
said to the man dressed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, “How long until the
fulfillment of these wonders?”
And I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things?
I heard, but I did not understand. So I asked, “My lord, what will be the outcome of these things?”
And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.
“Go on your way, Daniel,” he replied, “for the words are closed up and sealed until the time of the end.
The beginning of the word of the LORD by
Hosea. And the LORD
said to
Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land hath committed great
whoredom, departing from the LORD.
And the LORD
said unto him, Call his name
Jezreel; for yet a little while, and I will
avenge the blood of
Jezreel upon the house of
Jehu, and will cause to cease the kingdom of the house of Israel.
Then the LORD
said to
Hosea, “Name him
Jezreel, for soon I will bring the
bloodshed of
Jezreel upon the house of
Jehu, and I will put an end to the kingdom of Israel.
And she conceived again, and bare a daughter. And God said unto him, Call her name Lo-ruhamah: for I will no more have mercy upon the house of Israel; but I will utterly take them away.
Gomer again conceived and gave birth to a daughter, and the LORD
said to
Hosea, “Name her Lo-ruhamah, for I will no longer have
compassion on the house of Israel, that I should ever
forgive them.
Then said God, Call his name Lo-ammi: for ye are not my people, and I will not be your God.
And the LORD said, “Name him Lo-ammi, for you are not My people, and I am not your God.
Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.
Yet the number of the Israelites will be like the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured or counted. And it will happen that in the very place where it was said to them, ‘You are not My people,’ they will be called ‘sons of the living God.’
For their mother hath played the
harlot: she that conceived them hath done
shamefully: for she
said, I will go after my lovers, that give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, mine oil and my drink.
For their mother has played the
harlot and has conceived them in disgrace. For she thought, ‘I will go after my lovers, who give me bread and water, wool and linen, oil and drink.’
And I will destroy her vines and her fig trees,
whereof she hath
said, These are my rewards that my lovers have given me: and I will make them a forest, and the beasts of the field shall eat them.
I will destroy her vines and fig trees, which she thinks are the wages paid by her lovers. So I will make them into a
thicket, and the beasts of the field will
devour them.
Then
said the LORD unto me, Go yet, love a woman beloved of her friend, yet an
adulteress, according to the love of the LORD toward the children of Israel, who look to other gods, and love flagons of wine.
Then the LORD
said to me, “Go show love to your wife again, though she is loved by another and is an
adulteress. Love her as the LORD loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods and offer
raisin cakes to idols.”
And I
said unto her, Thou shalt
abide for me many days; thou shalt not play the
harlot, and thou shalt not be for another man: so will I also be for thee.
Then I
said to her, “You must live with me for many days; you must not be
promiscuous or belong to another, and I will do the same for you.”
And Ephraim said, Yet I am become rich, I have found me out substance: in all my labours they shall find none iniquity in me that were sin.
And Ephraim boasts: “How rich I have become! I have found wealth for myself. In all my labors, they can find in me no iniquity that is sinful.”
I will be thy king: where is any other that may save thee in all thy cities? and thy judges of whom thou saidst, Give me a king and princes?
Where is your king now to save you in all your cities, and the rulers to whom you said, “Give me a king and princes”?
And it shall come to pass, that
whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount
Zion and in Jerusalem shall be
deliverance, as the LORD hath
said, and in the
remnant whom the LORD shall call.
And
everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved; for on Mount
Zion and in Jerusalem there will be
deliverance, as the LORD has promised, among the
remnant called by the LORD.
And he
said, The LORD will
roar from
Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the habitations of the
shepherds shall
mourn, and the top of
Carmel shall wither.
And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I
said, O Lord GOD,
forgive, I
beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.
And when the locusts had eaten every green plant in the land, I
said, “Lord GOD, please
forgive! How will Jacob
survive, since he is so small?”
The LORD
repented for this: It shall not be, saith the LORD.
So the LORD relented from this plan. “It will not happen,” He said.
Then
said I, O Lord GOD, cease, I
beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.
Then I
said, “Lord GOD, please stop! How will Jacob
survive, since he is so small?”
The LORD
repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord GOD.
So the LORD relented from this plan. “It will not happen either,” said the Lord GOD.
And the LORD
said unto me,
Amos, what seest thou? And I
said, A plumbline. Then
said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more:
“
Amos, what do you see?” asked the LORD. “A
plumb line,” I replied. “Behold,”
said the Lord, “I am setting a
plumb line among My people Israel; I will no longer
spare them:
For thus
Amos saith,
Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away
captive out of their own land.
for this is what
Amos has
said: ‘
Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will surely go into exile, away from their homeland.’”
Then answered
Amos, and
said to
Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was an
herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:
“I was not a prophet,”
Amos replied, “nor was I the son of a prophet; rather, I was a
herdsman and a tender of
sycamore-fig trees.
And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD
said unto me, Go,
prophesy unto my people Israel.
But the LORD took me from following the flock and
said to me, ‘Go,
prophesy to My people Israel.’
And he
said,
Amos, what seest thou? And I
said, A
basket of summer fruit. Then
said the LORD unto me, The end is come upon my people of Israel; I will not again pass by them any more.
“
Amos, what do you see?” He asked. “A
basket of summer fruit,” I replied. So the LORD
said to me, “The end has come for My people Israel; I will no longer
spare them.”
I saw the LORD standing upon the altar: and he
said,
Smite the
lintel of the door, that the posts may
shake: and cut them in the head, all of them; and I will
slay the last of them with the sword: he that fleeth of them shall not
flee away, and he that escapeth of them shall not be delivered.
I saw the Lord standing beside the altar, and He
said: “Strike the tops of the pillars so that the thresholds
shake.
Topple them on the heads of all the people, and I will kill the rest with the sword. None of those who
flee will get away; none of the fugitives will escape.
So the
shipmaster came to him, and
said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.
The captain approached him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call upon your God. Perhaps this God will consider us, so that we may not perish.”
And they
said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon
Jonah.
“Come!”
said the sailors to one another. “Let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this
calamity that is upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on
Jonah.
Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?
“Tell us now,” they demanded, “who is to
blame for this
calamity that is upon us? What is your occupation, and where have you come from? What is your country, and who are your people?”
And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land.
“I am a Hebrew,” replied
Jonah. “I worship the LORD, the God of the heavens, who made the sea and the dry land.”
Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.
Then the men were even more afraid and
said to him, “What have you done?” The men knew that he was
fleeing from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.
Then
said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was
tempestuous.
Now the sea was growing worse and worse, so they
said to
Jonah, “What must we do to you to calm this sea for us?”
And he
said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great
tempest is upon you.
“
Pick me up,” he answered, “and cast me into the sea, so it may quiet down for you. For I know that I am to
blame for this violent storm that has come upon you.”
Wherefore they
cried unto the LORD, and
said, We
beseech thee, O LORD, we
beseech thee, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee.
So they
cried out to the LORD: “Please, O LORD, do not let us perish on account of this man’s life! Do not charge us with innocent blood! For You, O LORD, have done as You pleased.”
saying: “In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered me. From the
belly of
Sheol I called for help, and You heard my voice.
Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
At this, I said, ‘I have been banished from Your sight; yet I will look once more toward Your holy temple.’
And
Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he
cried, and
said, Yet forty days, and
Nineveh shall be overthrown.
On the first day of his journey,
Jonah set out into the city and proclaimed, “Forty more days and
Nineveh will be overturned!”
And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God
repented of the evil, that he had
said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
When God saw their actions—that they had turned from their evil ways—He relented from the
disaster He had threatened to bring upon them.
And he prayed unto the LORD, and
said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto
Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a
gracious God, and
merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.
So he prayed to the LORD, saying, “O LORD, is this not what I
said while I was still in my own country? This is why I was so quick to
flee toward
Tarshish. I knew that You are a
gracious and
compassionate God, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion—One who relents from sending
disaster.
Then
said the LORD, Doest thou well to be
angry?
But the LORD replied, “Have you any right to be
angry?”
And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a
vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of
Jonah, that he
fainted, and wished in himself to die, and
said, It is better for me to die than to live.
As the sun was rising, God appointed a
scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on
Jonah’s head so that he grew
faint and wished to die, saying, “It is better for me to die than to live.”
And God
said to
Jonah, Doest thou well to be
angry for the
gourd? And he
said, I do well to be
angry, even unto death.
Then God asked
Jonah, “Have you any right to be
angry about the plant?” “I do,” he replied. “I am
angry enough to die!”
Then
said the LORD, Thou hast had
pity on the
gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:
But the LORD
said, “You cared about the plant, which you neither tended nor made grow. It
sprang up in a night and perished in a night.
O thou that art named the house of Jacob, is the spirit of the LORD
straitened? are these his doings? do not my words do good to him that walketh uprightly?
Should it be said, O house of Jacob, “Is the Spirit of the LORD impatient? Are these the things He does?” Do not My words bring good to him who walks uprightly?
And I said, Hear, I pray you, O heads of Jacob, and ye princes of the house of Israel; Is it not for you to know judgment?
Then I said: “Hear now, O leaders of Jacob, you rulers of the house of Israel. Should you not know justice?
Then she that is mine enemy shall see it, and shame shall cover her which
said unto me, Where is the LORD thy God? mine eyes shall behold her: now shall she be
trodden down as the
mire of the streets.
Then my enemy will see and will be covered with shame— she who
said to me, “Where is the LORD your God?” My eyes will see her; at that time she will be
trampled like mud in the streets.
And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.
Then the LORD answered me: “Write down this vision and clearly
inscribe it on tablets, so that a
herald may run with it.
This is the
rejoicing city that dwelt
carelessly, that
said in her heart, I am, and there is none beside me: how is she become a
desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss, and
wag his hand.
This carefree city that dwells securely, that thinks to herself: “I am it, and there is none besides me,” what a ruin she has become, a resting place for beasts.
Everyone who passes by her hisses and shakes his
fist.
I
said, Surely thou
wilt fear me, thou
wilt receive instruction; so their dwelling should not be cut off,
howsoever I punished them: but they rose early, and corrupted all their doings.
I
said, ‘Surely you will fear Me and accept correction.’ Then her dwelling place would not be cut off
despite all for which I punished her. But they rose early to corrupt all their deeds.
In that day it shall be
said to Jerusalem, Fear thou not: and to
Zion, Let not thine hands be
slack.
On that day they will say to Jerusalem: “Do not fear, O
Zion; do not let your hands fall
limp.
If one bear holy flesh in the
skirt of his garment, and with his
skirt do touch bread, or
pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, shall it be holy? And the priests answered and
said, No.
If a man carries consecrated meat in the fold of his garment, and it touches bread,
stew, wine, oil, or any other food, does that
item become holy?’” “No,” replied the priests.
Then
said Haggai, If one that is unclean by a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean? And the priests answered and
said, It shall be unclean.
Then answered
Haggai, and
said, So is this people, and so is this nation before me, saith the LORD; and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean.
Then
Haggai replied, “So it is with this people and this nation before Me, declares the LORD, and so it is with every work of their hands; whatever they offer there is
defiled.
But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not take hold of your fathers? and they returned and said, Like as the LORD of hosts thought to do unto us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so hath he dealt with us.
But did not My words and My statutes, which I commanded My servants the prophets, overtake your fathers? They
repented and
said, ‘Just as the LORD of Hosts purposed to do to us according to our ways and deeds, so He has done to us.’”
Then
said I, O my lord, what are these? And the angel that talked with me
said unto me, I will
shew thee what these be.
“What are these, my lord?” I asked. And the angel who was speaking with me replied, “I will show you what they are.”
And the man that stood among the
myrtle trees answered and
said, These are they whom the LORD hath sent to walk to and
fro through the earth.
Then the man standing among the
myrtle trees explained, “They are the ones the LORD has sent to
patrol the earth.”
And they answered the angel of the LORD that stood among the
myrtle trees, and
said, We have walked to and
fro through the earth, and, behold, all the earth sitteth still, and is at rest.
And the riders answered the angel of the LORD who was standing among the
myrtle trees, “We have
patrolled the earth, and behold, all the earth is at rest and
tranquil.”
Then the angel of the LORD answered and
said, O LORD of hosts, how long
wilt thou not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which thou hast had
indignation these
threescore and ten years?
Then the angel of the LORD
said, “How long, O LORD of Hosts, will You
withhold mercy from Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, with which You have been
angry these seventy years?”
So the angel that communed with me
said unto me, Cry thou, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; I am
jealous for Jerusalem and for
Zion with a great jealousy.
Then the angel who was speaking with me
said, “
Proclaim this word: This is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘I am very
jealous for Jerusalem and
Zion,
And I said unto the angel that talked with me, What be these? And he answered me, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.
So I asked the angel who was speaking with me, “What are these?” And he told me, “These are the horns that have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.”
Then
said I, What come these to do? And he spake, saying, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, so that no man did lift up his head: but these are come to
fray them, to cast out the horns of the Gentiles, which lifted up their horn over the land of Judah to
scatter it.
“What are these coming to do?” I asked. And He replied, “These are the horns that scattered Judah so that no one could raise his head; but the
craftsmen have come to
terrify them and throw down these horns of the nations that have lifted up their horns against the land of Judah to
scatter it.”
Then
said I,
Whither goest thou? And he
said unto me, To measure Jerusalem, to see what is the breadth thereof, and what is the length thereof.
“Where are you going?” I asked. “To measure Jerusalem,” he replied, “and to determine its width and length.”
And said unto him, Run, speak to this young man, saying, Jerusalem shall be inhabited as towns without walls for the multitude of men and cattle therein:
and
said to him, “Run and tell that young man: ‘Jerusalem will be a city without walls because of the multitude of men and
livestock within it.
And the LORD
said to
Satan: “The LORD rebukes you,
Satan! Indeed, the LORD, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebukes you! Is not this man a
firebrand snatched from the fire?”
And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the
filthy garments from him. And unto him he
said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will
clothe thee with change of
raiment.
So the angel
said to those standing before him, “Take off his
filthy clothes!” Then he
said to Joshua, “See, I have removed your iniquity, and I will
clothe you with splendid robes.”
And I
said, Let them set a fair
mitre upon his head. So they set a fair
mitre upon his head, and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the LORD stood by.
Then I
said, “Let them put a clean
turban on his head.” So a clean
turban was placed on his head, and they clothed him, as the angel of the LORD stood by.
And
said unto me, What seest thou? And I
said, I have looked, and behold a
candlestick all of gold, with a
bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps
thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof:
“What do you see?” he asked. “I see a solid gold lampstand,” I replied, “with a
bowl at the top and seven lamps on it, with seven spouts to the lamps.
Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord.
“Do you not know what they are?” replied the angel. “No, my lord,” I answered.
Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto
Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.
So he
said to me, “This is the word of the LORD to
Zerubbabel: Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the LORD of Hosts.
Then answered I, and
said unto him, What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the
candlestick and upon the left side thereof?
Then I asked the angel, “What are the two olive trees on the right and left of the lampstand?”
And I answered again, and said unto him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves?
And I questioned him further, “What are the two olive branches beside the two gold pipes from which the golden oil pours?”
And he answered me and said, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord.
“Do you not know what these are?” he inquired. “No, my lord,” I replied.
Then
said he, These are the two
anointed ones, that stand by the LORD of the whole earth.
So he
said, “These are the two
anointed ones who are standing beside the Lord of all the earth.”
And he said unto me, What seest thou? And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits.
“What do you see?” asked the angel. “I see a flying
scroll,” I replied, “twenty cubits long and ten cubits wide.”
Then
said he unto me, This is the
curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth: for every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side according to it.
Then he told me, “This is the
curse that is going out over the face of all the land, for according to one side of the
scroll, every
thief will be removed; and according to the other side, every
perjurer will be removed.
Then the angel that talked with me went forth, and said unto me, Lift up now thine eyes, and see what is this that goeth forth.
Then the angel who was speaking with me came forward and told me, “Now lift up your eyes and see what is approaching.”
