Berean Standard Bible BSB Bible
So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of
Eden Cherubim, and a flaming
sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
So He drove out the man and stationed
cherubim on the east side of the Garden of
Eden, along with a
whirling sword of flame to guard the way to the tree of life.
And by thy sword shalt thou live, and shalt serve thy brother; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the dominion, that thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck.
You shall live by the
sword and serve your brother. But when you
rebel, you will
tear his yoke from your neck.”
And
Laban said to Jacob, What hast thou done, that thou hast
stolen away unawares to me, and carried away my daughters, as
captives taken with the
sword?
Then
Laban said to Jacob, “What have you done? You have
deceived me and carried off my daughters like
captives of war!
And it came to pass on the third day, when they were
sore, that two of the sons of Jacob,
Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brethren, took each man his
sword, and came upon the city boldly, and
slew all the males.
Three days later, while they were still in pain, two of Jacob’s sons (Dinah’s brothers
Simeon and Levi) took their
swords, went into the
unsuspecting city, and slaughtered every male.
And they
slew Hamor and
Shechem his son with the edge of the
sword, and took Dinah out of
Shechem’s house, and went out.
They killed Hamor and his son
Shechem with their
swords, took Dinah out of
Shechem’s house, and went away.
Moreover I have given to thee one portion above thy brethren, which I took out of the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow.
And to you, as one who is above your brothers, I give the ridge of land that I took from the
Amorites with my
sword and bow.”
Simeon and Levi are brethren; instruments of cruelty are in their habitations.
Simeon and Levi are brothers; their
swords are weapons of violence.
And they said, The God of the Hebrews hath met with us: let us go, we pray thee, three days’ journey into the desert, and sacrifice unto the LORD our God; lest he fall upon us with
pestilence, or with the
sword.
“The God of the Hebrews has met with us,” they answered. “Please let us go on a three-day journey into the wilderness to sacrifice to the LORD our God, or He may strike us with plagues or with the sword.”
And they said unto them, The LORD look upon you, and judge; because ye have made our savour to be
abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a
sword in their hand to
slay us.
“May the LORD look upon you and judge you,” the
foremen said, “for you have made us a
stench before Pharaoh and his officials; you have placed in their hand a
sword to kill us!”
The enemy said, I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the
spoil; my
lust shall be satisfied upon them; I will draw my
sword, my hand shall destroy them.
The enemy declared, ‘I will pursue, I will overtake. I will divide the spoils; I will
gorge myself on them. I will draw my
sword; my hand will destroy them.’
And Joshua
discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the
sword.
So Joshua
overwhelmed Amalek and his army with the
sword.
And the name of the other was
Eliezer; for the God of my father, said he, was mine help, and delivered me from the
sword of Pharaoh:
The other son was named
Eliezer, for Moses had said, “The God of my father was my helper and delivered me from the
sword of Pharaoh.”
And my wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.
My anger will be
kindled, and I will kill you with the
sword; then your wives will become widows and your children will be fatherless.
And he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his
sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and
slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour.
He told them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Each of you men is to
fasten his
sword to his side, go back and forth through the camp from gate to gate, and
slay his brother, his friend, and his
neighbor.’”
And I will give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid: and I will rid evil beasts out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land.
And I will give peace to the land, and you will lie down with nothing to fear. I will rid the land of dangerous animals, and no sword will pass through your land.
And ye shall
chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the
sword.
You will pursue your enemies, and they will fall by the sword before you.
And five of you shall
chase an hundred, and an hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight: and your enemies shall fall before you by the
sword.
Five of you will pursue a hundred, and a hundred of you will pursue ten thousand, and your enemies will fall by the sword before you.
And I will bring a
sword upon you, that shall
avenge the quarrel of my covenant: and when ye are gathered together within your cities, I will send the
pestilence among you; and ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy.
And I will bring a
sword against you to
execute the
vengeance of the covenant. Though you withdraw into your cities, I will send a plague among you, and you will be delivered into the hand of the enemy.
And I will
scatter you among the heathen, and will draw out a
sword after you: and your land shall be
desolate, and your cities waste.
But I will
scatter you among the nations and will draw out a
sword after you as your land becomes
desolate and your cities are laid waste.
And upon them that are left alive of you I will send a
faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a
shaken leaf shall
chase them; and they shall
flee, as
fleeing from a
sword; and they shall fall when none pursueth.
As for those of you who
survive, I will send a
faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies, so that even the sound of a windblown leaf will put them to flight. And they will
flee as one flees the
sword, and fall when no one pursues them.
And they shall fall one upon another, as it were before a sword, when none pursueth: and ye shall have no power to stand before your enemies.
They will
stumble over one another as before the
sword, though no one is behind them. So you will not be able to stand against your enemies.
And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt?
Why is the LORD bringing us into this land to fall by the
sword? Our wives and children will become
plunder. Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?”
For the
Amalekites and the
Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the
sword: because ye are turned away from the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you.
For there the
Amalekites and
Canaanites will face you, and you will fall by the
sword. Because you have turned away from the LORD, He will not be with you.”
And
whosoever toucheth one that is slain with a
sword in the open fields, or a dead body, or a bone of a man, or a grave, shall be unclean seven days.
Anyone in the open field who touches someone who has been killed by the
sword or has died of natural causes, or
anyone who touches a human bone or a grave, will be unclean for seven days.
And
Edom said unto him, Thou shalt not pass by me, lest I come out against thee with the
sword.
But
Edom answered, “You may not travel through our land, or we will come out and
confront you with the
sword.”
And Israel
smote him with the edge of the
sword, and possessed his land from
Arnon unto
Jabbok, even unto the children of
Ammon: for the border of the children of
Ammon was strong.
And Israel put him to the
sword and took possession of his land, from the
Arnon to the
Jabbok—but only up to the border of the
Ammonites, because it was fortified.
And the
ass saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his
sword drawn in his hand: and the
ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and
Balaam smote the
ass, to turn her into the way.
When the
donkey saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road with a drawn
sword in his hand, she turned off the path and went into a field. So
Balaam beat her to return her to the path.
And
Balaam said unto the
ass, Because thou hast
mocked me: I would there were a
sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee.
Balaam answered the
donkey, “You have made a
fool of me! If I had a
sword in my hand, I would kill you right now!”
Then the LORD opened the eyes of
Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his
sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face.
Then the LORD opened
Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road with a drawn
sword in his hand. And
Balaam bowed low and fell facedown.
And they
slew the kings of
Midian, beside the rest of them that were slain; namely, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, five kings of
Midian:
Balaam also the son of Beor they
slew with the
sword.
Among the slain were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba—the five kings of
Midian. They also killed
Balaam son of Beor with the
sword.
Thou shalt surely
smite the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the
sword, destroying it utterly, and all that is therein, and the cattle thereof, with the edge of the
sword.
you must surely put the inhabitants of that city to the
sword.
Devote to destruction all its people and
livestock.
And when the LORD thy God hath delivered it into thine hands, thou shalt
smite every male thereof with the edge of the
sword:
When the LORD your God has delivered it into your hand, you must put every male to the sword.
The LORD shall
smite thee with a consumption, and with a fever, and with an inflammation, and with an extreme burning, and with the
sword, and with blasting, and with
mildew; and they shall pursue thee until thou perish.
The LORD will strike you with wasting disease, with fever and inflammation, with
scorching heat and
drought, and with
blight and
mildew; these will pursue you until you perish.
The
sword without, and terror within, shall destroy both the young man and the virgin, the
suckling also with the man of gray hairs.
Outside, the sword will take their children, and inside, terror will strike the young man and the young woman, the infant and the gray-haired man.
If I
whet my
glittering sword, and mine hand take hold on judgment; I will render
vengeance to mine enemies, and will reward them that
hate me.
I will make mine arrows
drunk with blood, and my
sword shall
devour flesh; and that with the blood of the slain and of the
captives, from the beginning of revenges upon the enemy.
I will make My arrows
drunk with blood, while My
sword devours flesh— the blood of the slain and
captives, the heads of the enemy leaders.”
Happy art thou, O Israel: who is like unto thee, O people saved by the LORD, the shield of thy help, and who is the
sword of thy
excellency! and thine enemies shall be found liars unto thee; and thou shalt
tread upon their high places.
Blessed are you, O Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the LORD? He is the shield that protects you, the
sword in which you
boast. Your enemies will cower before you, and you shall
trample their high places.”
And it came to pass, when Joshua was by
Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his
sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our
adversaries?
Now when Joshua was near
Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn
sword in His hand. Joshua approached Him and asked, “Are You for us or for our enemies?”
And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and
ass, with the edge of the
sword.
At the edge of the
sword they devoted to destruction everything in the city—man and woman, young and old, oxen, sheep, and
donkeys.
And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of
slaying all the inhabitants of
Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they
chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the
sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned unto
Ai, and
smote it with the edge of the
sword.
When Israel had finished killing all the men of
Ai who had pursued them into the field and wilderness, and when every last one of them had fallen by the
sword, all the Israelites returned to
Ai and put it to the
sword as well.
And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Beth-horon, that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel
slew with the
sword.
As they fled before Israel along the descent from Beth-horon to Azekah, the LORD cast down on them large hailstones from the sky, and more of them were killed by the hailstones than by the swords of the Israelites.
And that day Joshua took Makkedah, and
smote it with the edge of the
sword, and the king thereof he utterly destroyed, them, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of
Jericho.
On that day Joshua captured Makkedah and put it to the
sword, along with its king. He devoted to destruction
everyone in the city, leaving no survivors. So he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of
Jericho.
And the LORD delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he
smote it with the edge of the
sword, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain in it; but did unto the king thereof as he did unto the king of
Jericho.
And the LORD also delivered that city and its king into the hand of Israel, and Joshua put all the people to the
sword, leaving no survivors. And he did to the king of
Libnah as he had done to the king of
Jericho.
And the LORD delivered
Lachish into the hand of Israel, which took it on the second day, and
smote it with the edge of the
sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to
Libnah.
And the LORD delivered
Lachish into the hand of Israel, and Joshua captured it on the second day. He put all the people to the
sword, just as he had done to
Libnah.
And they took it on that day, and
smote it with the edge of the
sword, and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to
Lachish.
That day they captured
Eglon and put it to the
sword, and Joshua devoted to destruction
everyone in the city, just as he had done to
Lachish.
And they took it, and
smote it with the edge of the
sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to
Eglon; but destroyed it utterly, and all the souls that were therein.
They captured it and put to the
sword its king, all its villages, and all the people. Joshua left no survivors, just as he had done at
Eglon; he devoted to destruction
Hebron and
everyone in it.
And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they
smote them with the edge of the
sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to
Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to
Libnah, and to her king.
And they captured Debir, its king, and all its villages. They put them to the
sword and devoted to destruction
everyone in the city, leaving no survivors. Joshua did to Debir and its king as he had done to
Hebron and as he had done to
Libnah and its king.
And Joshua at that time turned back, and took Hazor, and
smote the king thereof with the
sword: for Hazor
beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms.
At that time Joshua turned back and captured Hazor and put its king to the sword, because Hazor was formerly the head of all these kingdoms.
And they
smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the
sword, utterly destroying them: there was not any left to
breathe: and he burnt Hazor with fire.
The Israelites put
everyone in Hazor to the
sword,
devoting them to destruction. Nothing that breathed remained, and Joshua burned down Hazor itself.
And all the cities of those kings, and all the kings of them, did Joshua take, and
smote them with the edge of the
sword, and he utterly destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the LORD commanded.
Joshua captured all these kings and their cities and put them to the sword. He devoted them to destruction, as Moses the LORD’s servant had commanded.
And all the
spoil of these cities, and the cattle, the children of Israel took for a prey unto themselves; but every man they
smote with the edge of the
sword, until they had destroyed them, neither left they any to
breathe.
The Israelites took for themselves all the
plunder and
livestock of these cities, but they put all the people to the
sword until they had completely destroyed them, not
sparing anyone who breathed.
Balaam also the son of Beor, the
soothsayer, did the children of Israel
slay with the
sword among them that were slain by them.
The Israelites also killed the diviner
Balaam son of Beor along with the others they put to the
sword.
And the coast of the children of
Dan went out too little for them: therefore the children of
Dan went up to fight against Leshem, and took it, and
smote it with the edge of the
sword, and possessed it, and dwelt therein, and called Leshem,
Dan, after the name of
Dan their father.
(Later, when the territory of the Danites was lost to them, they went up and fought against Leshem, captured it, and put it to the
sword. So they took possession of Leshem, settled there, and renamed it after their father
Dan.)
And I sent the
hornet before you, which
drave them out from before you, even the two kings of the
Amorites; but not with thy
sword, nor with thy bow.
I sent the
hornet ahead of you, and it drove out the two Amorite kings before you, but not by your own
sword or bow.
Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and
smitten it with the edge of the
sword, and set the city on fire.
Then the men of Judah fought against Jerusalem and captured it. They put the city to the sword and set it on fire.
And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they
smote the city with the edge of the
sword; but they let go the man and all his family.
So the man showed them the entrance to the city, and they put the city to the sword but released that man and all his family.
And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the
dagger from his right
thigh, and thrust it into his
belly:
And Ehud reached with his left hand, pulled the
sword from his right
thigh, and
plunged it into
Eglon’s
belly.
And the
haft also went in after the
blade; and the fat closed upon the
blade, so that he could not draw the
dagger out of his
belly; and the
dirt came out.
And the LORD
discomfited Sisera, and all his
chariots, and all his host, with the edge of the
sword before
Barak; so that Sisera lighted down off his
chariot, and fled away on his feet.
And in front of him the LORD routed with the
sword Sisera, all his charioteers, and all his army. Sisera abandoned his
chariot and fled on foot.
But
Barak pursued after the
chariots, and after the host, unto
Harosheth of the Gentiles: and all the host of Sisera fell upon the edge of the
sword; and there was not a man left.
Then
Barak pursued the
chariots and army as far as
Harosheth-hagoyim, and the whole army of Sisera fell by the
sword; not a single man was left.
And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the
sword of
Gideon the son of
Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand hath God delivered
Midian, and all the host.
His friend replied: “This is nothing less than the
sword of
Gideon son of
Joash, the
Israelite. God has delivered
Midian and the whole camp into his hand.”
When I blow with a
trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the
trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, The
sword of the LORD, and of
Gideon.
When I and all who are with me blow our horns, then you are also to blow your horns from all around the camp and
shout, ‘For the LORD and for
Gideon!’”
And the three companies
blew the
trumpets, and
brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the
trumpets in their right hands to blow
withal: and they
cried, The
sword of the LORD, and of
Gideon.
The three companies
blew their horns and
shattered their jars. Holding the torches in their left hands and the horns in their right hands, they
shouted, “A
sword for the LORD and for
Gideon!”
And the three hundred
blew the
trumpets, and the LORD set every man’s
sword against his fellow, even throughout all the host: and the host fled to Beth-
shittah in Zererath, and to the border of
Abel-meholah, unto Tabbath.
And when the three hundred rams’ horns sounded, the LORD set all the men in the camp against one another with their
swords. The army fled to Beth-
shittah toward Zererah as far as the border of
Abel-meholah near Tabbath.
Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.
Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with their army of about fifteen thousand men—all that were left of the armies of the people of the east. A hundred and twenty thousand
swordsmen had already fallen.
And he said unto Jether his
firstborn, Up, and
slay them. But the youth drew not his
sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth.
So he said to Jether, his
firstborn, “Get up and kill them.” But the young man did not draw his
sword; he was fearful because he was still a youth.
Then he called
hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy
sword, and
slay me, that men say not of me, A woman
slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.
He quickly called his
armor-bearer, saying, “Draw your
sword and kill me, lest they say of me, ‘A woman killed him.’” So
Abimelech’s
armor-bearer ran his
sword through him, and he died.
And they took the things which
Micah had made, and the priest which he had, and came unto Laish, unto a people that were at quiet and secure: and they
smote them with the edge of the
sword, and burnt the city with fire.
After they had taken
Micah’s idols and his priest, they went to Laish, to a
tranquil and
unsuspecting people, and they struck them with their
swords and burned down the city.
And the chief of all the people, even of all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand
footmen that drew
sword.
The leaders of all the people and all the tribes of Israel presented themselves in the assembly of God’s people: 400,000 men on foot, armed with swords.
And the children of Benjamin were numbered at that time out of the cities twenty and six thousand men that drew sword, beside the inhabitants of Gibeah, which were numbered seven hundred chosen men.
On that day the Benjamites
mobilized 26,000
swordsmen from their cities, in addition to the 700 select men of Gibeah.
And the men of Israel, beside Benjamin, were numbered four hundred thousand men that drew sword: all these were men of war.
And Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the sword.
That same day the Benjamites came out against them from Gibeah and cut down another 18,000 Israelites, all of them armed with swords.
And the LORD
smote Benjamin before Israel: and the children of Israel destroyed of the Benjamites that day twenty and five thousand and an hundred men: all these drew the
sword.
The LORD defeated Benjamin in the presence of Israel, and on that day the Israelites slaughtered 25,100 Benjamites, all armed with swords.
And the liers in wait hasted, and
rushed upon Gibeah; and the liers in wait drew themselves along, and
smote all the city with the edge of the
sword.
The men in
ambush rushed suddenly against Gibeah; they advanced and put the whole city to the
sword.
So that all which fell that day of Benjamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the sword; all these were men of valour.
And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and
smote them with the edge of the
sword, as well the men of every city, as the beast, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they came to.
And the men of Israel turned back against the other Benjamites and put to the sword all the cities, including the animals and everything else they found. And they burned down all the cities in their path.
And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and commanded them, saying, Go and
smite the inhabitants of
Jabesh-
gilead with the edge of the
sword, with the women and the children.
So the congregation sent 12,000 of their most
valiant men and commanded them: “Go and put to the
sword those living in
Jabesh-
gilead, including women and children.
And the man of thine, whom I shall not cut off from mine altar, shall be to
consume thine eyes, and to
grieve thine heart: and all the increase of thine house shall die in the flower of their age.
And every one of you that I do not cut off from My altar, your eyes will fail and your heart will
grieve. All your descendants will die by the
sword of men.
Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears:
And no
blacksmith could be found in all the land of Israel, because the Philistines had said, “The Hebrews must not be allowed to make
swords or spears.”
So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither
sword nor
spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and
Jonathan: but with Saul and with
Jonathan his son was there found.
So on the day of battle not a
sword or
spear could be found in the hands of the troops with Saul and
Jonathan; only Saul and his son
Jonathan had weapons.
And Saul and all the people that were with him assembled themselves, and they came to the battle: and, behold, every man’s
sword was against his fellow, and there was a very great
discomfiture.
Then Saul and all his troops assembled and marched to the battle, and they found the Philistines in total confusion, with each man
wielding the
sword against his
neighbor.
And he took
Agag the king of the
Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the
sword.
He captured
Agag king of Amalek alive, but devoted all the others to destruction with the
sword.
And Samuel said, As thy
sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel
hewed Agag in pieces before the LORD in
Gilgal.
But Samuel declared: “As your
sword has made women childless, so your mother will be childless among women.” And Samuel
hacked Agag to pieces before the LORD at
Gilgal.
And David
girded his
sword upon his armour, and he
assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.
David
strapped his
sword over the
tunic and tried to walk, but he was not accustomed to them. “I cannot walk in these,” David said to Saul. “I am not accustomed to them.” So David took them off.
Then said David to the
Philistine, Thou comest to me with a
sword, and with a
spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast
defied.
But David said to the
Philistine, “You come against me with
sword and
spear and
javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD of Hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have
defied.
And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with
sword and
spear: for the battle is the LORD’S, and he will give you into our hands.
And all those assembled here will know that it is not by
sword or
spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’s, and He will give all of you into our hands.”
Thus David prevailed over the
Philistine with a
sling and a stone; without a
sword in his hand he struck down the
Philistine and killed him.
Therefore David ran, and stood upon the
Philistine, and took his
sword, and drew it out of the
sheath thereof, and
slew him, and cut off his head
therewith. And when the Philistines saw their
champion was dead, they fled.
David ran and stood over him. He
grabbed the
Philistine’s
sword and pulled it from its
sheath and killed him; and he cut off his head with the
sword. When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran.
And
Jonathan stripped himself of the
robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his
sword, and to his bow, and to his
girdle.
And
Jonathan removed the
robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his
tunic, his
sword, his bow, and his belt.
And David said unto
Ahimelech, And is there not here under thine hand
spear or
sword? for I have neither brought my
sword nor my weapons with me, because the king’s business required
haste.
Then David asked
Ahimelech, “Is there not a
spear or
sword on hand here? For I have brought neither my
sword nor my weapons with me, because the king’s business was
urgent.”
And the priest said, The
sword of
Goliath the
Philistine, whom thou slewest in the valley of Elah, behold, it is here
wrapped in a cloth behind the
ephod: if thou
wilt take that, take it: for there is no other save that here. And David said, There is none like that; give it me.
The priest replied, “The
sword of
Goliath the
Philistine, whom you killed in the Valley of Elah, is here; it is
wrapped in a cloth behind the
ephod. If you want, you may take it. For there is no other but this one.” And David said, “There is none like it; give it to me.”
And Saul said unto him, Why have ye
conspired against me, thou and the son of
Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread, and a
sword, and hast enquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?
And Saul asked him, “Why have you and the son of
Jesse conspired against me? You gave him bread and a
sword and inquired of God for him so that he could rise up against me to lie in wait, as he is doing
today.”
And
Nob, the city of the priests,
smote he with the edge of the
sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen, and
asses, and sheep, with the edge of the
sword.
He also put to the
sword Nob, the city of the priests, with its men and women, children and infants, oxen,
donkeys, and sheep.
And David said unto his men,
Gird ye on every man his
sword. And they
girded on every man his
sword; and David also
girded on his
sword: and there went up after David about four hundred men; and two hundred abode by the stuff.
And David said to his men, “
Strap on your
swords!” So David and all his men put on their
swords, and about four hundred men followed David, while two hundred stayed with the supplies.
Then said Saul unto his armourbearer, Draw thy
sword, and thrust me through
therewith; lest these
uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and
abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was
sore afraid. Therefore Saul took a
sword, and fell upon it.
Then Saul said to his
armor-bearer, “Draw your
sword and run it through me, or these
uncircumcised men will come and run me through and
torture me!” But his
armor-bearer was
terrified and refused to do it. So Saul took his own
sword and fell on it.
And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon his sword, and died with him.
When his
armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his own
sword and died with him.
And they
mourned, and
wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for
Jonathan his son, and for the people of the LORD, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the
sword.
They
mourned and
wept and fasted until evening for Saul and his son
Jonathan, and for the people of the LORD and the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the
sword.
From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of
Jonathan turned not back, and the
sword of Saul returned not empty.
From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of
Jonathan did not retreat, and the
sword of Saul did not return empty.
