Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.
From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land.
And about
the ninth hour Jesus
cried with a loud voice, saying,
Eli,
Eli,
lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou
forsaken me?
About
the ninth hour Jesus
cried out in a loud voice, “
Eli,
Eli, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, My God, why have You
forsaken Me?”
Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias.
When some of those standing
there heard this,
they said, “He is calling
Elijah.”
And
straightway one of
them ran, and took a
spunge, and filled it with
vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.
One of
them quickly ran and brought a
sponge. He filled it with
sour wine, put it on a reed, and held it up for Jesus to drink.
The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.
But
the others said, “Leave Him alone. Let us see if
Elijah comes to save Him.”
Jesus, when he had
cried again with a loud voice, yielded up
the ghost.
When Jesus had
cried out again in a loud voice, He yielded up His spirit.
And, behold,
the veil of
the temple was rent in
twain from
the top to
the bottom; and
the earth did
quake, and
the rocks rent;
At that moment
the veil of
the temple was
torn in two from top to bottom.
The earth
quaked and
the rocks were split.
And
the graves were opened; and many bodies of
the saints which
slept arose,
The tombs broke open, and
the bodies of many saints who had fallen
asleep were raised.
And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
After Jesus’ resurrection, when they had come out of the tombs, they entered the holy city and appeared to many people.
Now when
the centurion, and
they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw
the earthquake, and those things that were done,
they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was
the Son of God.
When
the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw
the earthquake and all that had happened,
they were
terrified and said, “Truly this was
the Son of God.”
And many women were
there beholding
afar off, which followed Jesus from
Galilee, ministering unto him:
And many women were
there, watching from a distance.
They had followed Jesus from
Galilee to minister to Him.
Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s children.
Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.
When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus’ disciple:
When it was evening,
there came a rich man from
Arimathea named Joseph, who himself was a disciple of Jesus.
He went to
Pilate, and
begged the body of Jesus.
Then Pilate commanded
the body to be delivered.
He went to
Pilate to ask for
the body of Jesus, and
Pilate ordered that it be given to him.
And when Joseph had taken
the body, he
wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
So Joseph took
the body,
wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had
hewn out in
the rock: and he rolled a great stone to
the door of
the sepulchre, and departed.
and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut into the rock. Then he rolled a great stone across the entrance to the tomb and went away.
And
there was Mary Magdalene, and
the other Mary, sitting over against
the sepulchre.
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.
Now
the next day, that followed
the day of
the preparation,
the chief priests and
Pharisees came together unto
Pilate,
The next day,
the one after Preparation Day,
the chief priests and
Pharisees assembled before
Pilate.
Saying, Sir, we remember that that
deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.
“Sir,”
they said, “we remember that while He was alive that
deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’
Command
therefore that
the sepulchre be made sure until
the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and
steal him away, and say unto
the people, He is risen from
the dead: so
the last error shall be worse than
the first.
So give
the order that
the tomb be secured until
the third day. Otherwise, His disciples may come and
steal Him away and tell
the people He has risen from
the dead. And this last
deception would be worse than
the first.”
Pilate said unto
them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.
“You have a guard,”
Pilate said. “Go, make
the tomb as secure as you know how.”
So
they went, and made
the sepulchre sure, sealing
the stone, and setting a watch.
So they went and secured the tomb by sealing the stone and posting the guard.
In
the end of
the sabbath, as it began to
dawn toward
the first day of
the week, came Mary Magdalene and
the other Mary to see
the sepulchre.
After
the Sabbath, at
dawn on
the first day of
the week, Mary Magdalene and
the other Mary went to see
the tomb.
And, behold,
there was a great
earthquake: for
the angel of
the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back
the stone from
the door, and sat upon it.
Suddenly
there was a great
earthquake, for an angel of
the Lord descended from heaven, rolled away
the stone, and sat on it.
And for fear of him
the keepers did
shake, and became as dead men.
The guards
trembled in fear of him and became like dead men.
And
the angel answered and said unto
the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was
crucified.
But
the angel said to
the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was
crucified.
He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
He is not here; He has risen, just as He said! Come, see the place where He lay.
And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from
the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into
Galilee;
there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.
Then go quickly and tell His disciples, ‘He has risen from
the dead and is going
ahead of you into
Galilee.
There you will see Him.’ See, I have told you.”
And
they departed quickly from
the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.
So
they hurried away from
the tomb in fear and great joy, and ran to tell His disciples.
And as
they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met
them, saying, All
hail. And
they came and held him by
the feet, and worshipped him.
Suddenly Jesus met
them and said, “Greetings!”
They came to Him,
grasped His feet, and worshiped Him.
Then said Jesus unto
them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that
they go into
Galilee, and
there shall
they see me.
“Do not be afraid,” said Jesus. “Go and tell My brothers to go to
Galilee.
There they will see Me.”
Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done.
While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests all that had happened.
And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers,
And after the chief priests had met with the elders and formed a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money
Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and
stole him away while we
slept.
and
instructed them: “You are to say, ‘His disciples came by night and
stole Him away while we were
asleep.’
And if this come to
the governor’s ears, we will
persuade him, and secure you.
If this report reaches the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.”
So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.
So
the guards took
the money and did as
they were
instructed. And this account has been circulated among
the Jews to this very day.
Then the eleven disciples went away into
Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed
them.
Meanwhile,
the eleven disciples went to
Galilee, to
the mountain Jesus had designated.
And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted.
When they saw Him, they worshiped Him, but some doubted.
And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.
Go ye
therefore, and teach all nations,
baptizing them in
the name of
the Father, and of
the Son, and of
the Holy Ghost:
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in
the name of
the Father, and of
the Son, and of
the Holy Spirit,
Teaching
them to observe all things
whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you
alway, even unto
the end of
the world.
Amen.
and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;
This is the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
As it is written in
the prophets, Behold, I send my
messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before
thee.
As it is written in Isaiah
the prophet: “Behold, I will send My
messenger ahead of You, who will prepare Your way.”
The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
“A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for Him.’”
John
the Baptist appeared in
the wilderness, preaching a baptism of
repentance for
the forgiveness of sins.
And
there went out unto him all
the land of Judaea, and
they of Jerusalem, and were all
baptized of him in
the river of Jordan,
confessing their sins.
And preached, saying,
There cometh one mightier than I after me,
the latchet of whose
shoes I am not worthy to
stoop down and unloose.
And he began to
proclaim: “After me will come One more powerful than I,
the straps of whose
sandals I am not worthy to
stoop down and
untie.
I indeed have
baptized you with water: but he shall
baptize you with
the Holy Ghost.
I
baptize you with water, but He will
baptize you with
the Holy Spirit.”
And
straightway coming up out of
the water, he saw
the heavens opened, and
the Spirit like a
dove descending upon him:
As soon as Jesus came up out of
the water, He saw
the heavens breaking open and
the Spirit descending on Him like a
dove.
And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
And a voice came from heaven: “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”
And immediately the Spirit driveth him into the wilderness.
At once the Spirit drove Jesus into the wilderness,
And he was
there in
the wilderness forty days,
tempted of
Satan; and was with
the wild beasts; and
the angels ministered unto him.
and He was
there for forty days, being
tempted by
Satan. He was with
the wild animals, and
the angels ministered to Him.
Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into
Galilee, preaching
the gospel of
the kingdom of God,
After
the arrest of John, Jesus went into
Galilee and proclaimed
the gospel of God.
And saying,
The time is fulfilled, and
the kingdom of God is at hand:
repent ye, and believe
the gospel.
“
The time is fulfilled,” He said, “and
the kingdom of God is near.
Repent and believe in
the gospel!”
Now as he walked by
the sea of
Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into
the sea: for
they were fishers.
As Jesus was walking beside
the Sea of
Galilee, He saw Simon and his brother Andrew.
They were casting a net into
the sea, for
they were
fishermen.
And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.
“Come, follow Me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”
And at once they left their nets and followed Him.
And when he had gone a little farther
thence, he saw James
the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in
the ship
mending their nets.
Going on a little farther, He saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John.
They were in a boat,
mending their nets.
And
straightway he called
them: and
they left
their father Zebedee in
the ship with
the hired servants, and went after him.
Immediately Jesus called
them, and
they left
their father Zebedee in
the boat with
the hired men and followed Him.
Then Jesus and His companions went to
Capernaum, and right away Jesus entered
the synagogue on
the Sabbath and began to teach.
And
they were
astonished at his doctrine: for he taught
them as one that had authority, and not as
the scribes.
The people were
astonished at His teaching, because He taught as one who had authority, and not as
the scribes.
And
there was in
their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he
cried out,
Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with
thee, thou Jesus of
Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know
thee who thou art,
the Holy One of God.
“What do You want with us, Jesus of
Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—
the Holy One of God!”
And Jesus
rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.
But Jesus
rebuked the spirit. “Be silent!” He said. “Come out of him!”
And when
the unclean spirit had
torn him, and
cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.
At this,
the unclean spirit threw
the man into convulsions and came out with a loud
shriek.
And
they were all
amazed,
insomuch that
they questioned among
themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even
the unclean spirits, and
they do obey him.
All
the people were
amazed and began to ask one another, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even
the unclean spirits, and
they obey Him!”
And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all
the region round about
Galilee.
And
the news about Jesus spread quickly through
the whole region of
Galilee.
And
forthwith, when
they were come out of
the synagogue,
they entered into
the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.
As soon as Jesus and His companions had left
the synagogue,
they went with James and John to
the home of Simon and Andrew.
But Simon’s wife’s mother lay sick of a fever, and
anon they tell him of her.
Simon’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever, and
they promptly told Jesus about her.
And he came and took her by the hand, and lifted her up; and immediately the fever left her, and she ministered unto them.
So He went to her, took her by the hand, and helped her up. The fever left her, and she began to serve them.
And at even, when the sun did set, they brought unto him all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils.
That evening, after
sunset, people brought to Jesus all who were sick and
demon-possessed,
And all the city was gathered together at the door.
and the whole town gathered at the door.
And he
healed many that were sick of
divers diseases, and cast out many devils; and suffered not
the devils to speak, because
they knew him.
And He
healed many who were ill with various diseases and drove out many demons. But He would not allow
the demons to speak, because
they knew who He was.
And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.
Early in
the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up and
slipped out to a solitary place to pray.
And Simon and they that were with him followed after him.
Simon and his companions went to look for Him,
And when they had found him, they said unto him, All men seek for thee.
and when
they found Him,
they said, “
Everyone is looking for You!”
And he said unto
them, Let us go into
the next towns, that I may
preach there also: for
therefore came I forth.
But Jesus answered, “Let us go on to
the neighboring towns so I can
preach there as well, for that is why I have come.”
And he preached in
their synagogues throughout all
Galilee, and cast out devils.
So He went throughout
Galilee, preaching in
their synagogues and driving out demons.
Then a
leper came to Jesus,
begging on his knees: “If You are willing, You can make me clean.”
And Jesus, moved with
compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean.
Moved with
compassion, Jesus reached out His hand and touched
the man. “I am willing,” He said. “Be clean!”
And as soon as he had spoken, immediately
the leprosy departed from him, and he was
cleansed.
And saith unto him, See thou say nothing to any man: but go thy way,
shew thyself to
the priest, and offer for thy
cleansing those things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto
them.
“See that you don’t tell
anyone. But go, show
yourself to
the priest and present
the offering Moses prescribed for your
cleansing, as a testimony to
them.”
But he went out, and began to
publish it much, and to
blaze abroad
the matter,
insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into
the city, but was without in desert places: and
they came to him from every quarter.
But
the man went out and openly began to
proclaim and spread
the news. Consequently, Jesus could no longer enter a town in plain view, but He stayed out in solitary places. Yet people came to Him from every quarter.
And again he entered into
Capernaum, after some days; and it was noised that he was in
the house.
A few days later Jesus went back to
Capernaum. And when
the people heard that He was home,
And
straightway many were gathered together,
insomuch that
there was no room to receive
them, no, not so much as about
the door: and he preached
the word unto
them.
they gathered in such large numbers that there was no more room, not even outside the door, as Jesus spoke the word to them.
And
they come unto him, bringing one sick of
the palsy, which was borne of four.
Then a
paralytic was brought to Him, carried by four men.
And when
they could not come
nigh unto him for
the press,
they uncovered
the roof where he was: and when
they had broken it up,
they let down
the bed wherein
the sick of
the palsy lay.
Since
they were unable to get to Jesus through
the crowd,
they uncovered
the roof above Him, made an opening, and lowered
the paralytic on his mat.
When Jesus saw
their faith, he said unto
the sick of
the palsy, Son, thy sins be
forgiven thee.
But
there were certain of
the scribes sitting
there, and reasoning in
their hearts,
But some of
the scribes were sitting
there and thinking in
their hearts,
And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts?
At once Jesus knew in His spirit that they were thinking this way within themselves. “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts?” He asked.
Whether is it easier to say to
the sick of
the palsy, Thy sins be
forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?
“Which is easier: to say to a
paralytic, ‘Your sins are
forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up,
pick up your mat, and walk’?
But that ye may know that
the Son of man hath power on earth to
forgive sins, (he saith to
the sick of
the palsy,)
But so that you may know that
the Son of Man has authority on earth to
forgive sins...” He said to
the paralytic,
I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.
“I tell you, get up,
pick up your mat, and go home.”
And immediately he arose, took up
the bed, and went forth before
them all;
insomuch that
they were all
amazed, and
glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.
And immediately
the man got up,
picked up his mat, and walked out in front of
them all. As a result,
they were all
astounded and
glorified God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”
And he went forth again by the sea side; and all the multitude resorted unto him, and he taught them.
Once again Jesus went out beside the sea. All the people came to Him, and He taught them there.
And as he passed by, he saw Levi
the son of Alphaeus sitting at
the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him.
As He was walking along, He saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at
the tax
booth. “Follow Me,” He told him, and Levi got up and followed Him.
And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him.
While Jesus was
dining at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with Him and His disciples—for
there were many who followed Him.
And when
the scribes and
Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners,
they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?
When
the scribes who were
Pharisees saw Jesus eating with
these people,
they asked His disciples, “Why does He eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
When Jesus heard it, he saith unto
them,
They that are whole have no need of
the physician, but
they that are sick: I came not to call
the righteous, but sinners to
repentance.
On hearing this, Jesus told them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
