Berean Standard Bible BSB Bible
And entered into a ship, and went over
the sea toward
Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to
them.
got into a boat, and started across
the sea to
Capernaum. It was already dark, and Jesus had not yet gone out to
them.
And
the sea arose by reason of a great wind that
blew.
A strong wind was blowing, and
the sea grew
agitated.
So when
they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs,
they see Jesus walking on
the sea, and drawing
nigh unto
the ship: and
they were afraid.
When
they had rowed about three or four miles,
they saw Jesus approaching
the boat, walking on
the sea—and
they were
terrified.
But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.
But Jesus spoke up: “It is I; do not be afraid.”
Then they willingly received him into
the ship: and immediately
the ship was at
the land
whither they went.
Then they were willing to take Him into the boat, and at once the boat reached the shore where they were heading.
The day following, when
the people which stood on
the other side of
the sea saw that
there was none other boat
there, save that one
whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into
the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone;
The next day, the crowd that had remained on the other side of the sea realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not boarded it with His disciples, but they had gone away alone.
(
Howbeit there came other boats from
Tiberias nigh unto
the place where
they did eat bread, after that
the Lord had given
thanks:)
However, some boats from
Tiberias landed near
the place where
the people had eaten
the bread after
the Lord had given
thanks.
When
the people
therefore saw that Jesus was not
there, neither his disciples,
they also took shipping, and came to
Capernaum, seeking for Jesus.
So when
the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor His disciples were
there,
they got into
the boats and went to
Capernaum to look for Him.
And when
they had found him on
the other side of
the sea,
they said unto him,
Rabbi, when camest thou
hither?
When
they found Him on
the other side of
the sea,
they asked Him, “
Rabbi, when did You get here?”
Jesus answered
them and said,
Verily,
verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw
the miracles, but because ye did eat of
the loaves, and were filled.
Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, it is not because you saw
these signs that you are looking for Me, but because you
ate the loaves and had your fill.
Labour not for
the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto
everlasting life, which
the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God
the Father sealed.
Do not work for food that perishes, but for food that endures to eternal life, which
the Son of Man will give you. For on Him God
the Father has placed His seal of
approval.”
Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?
Then they inquired, “What must we do to perform the works of God?”
Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
Jesus replied, “The work of God is this: to believe in the One He has sent.”
They said
therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou
then, that we may see, and believe
thee? what
dost thou work?
So they asked Him, “What sign then will You perform, so that we may see it and believe You? What will You do?
Our fathers did eat
manna in
the desert; as it is written, He gave
them bread from heaven to eat.
Our fathers
ate the manna in
the wilderness, as it is written: ‘He gave
them bread from heaven to eat.’”
Then Jesus said unto
them,
Verily,
verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you
the true bread from heaven.
Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.
For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.
For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
Then said
they unto him, Lord,
evermore give us this bread.
“Sir,” they said, “give us this bread at all times.”
And Jesus said unto
them, I am
the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never
thirst.
Jesus answered, “I am
the bread of life.
Whoever comes to Me will never hunger, and
whoever believes in Me will never
thirst.
All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
Everyone the Father gives Me will come to Me, and
the one who comes to Me I will never drive away.
For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.
For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but to do the will of Him who sent Me.
And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.
And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that I shall lose none of those He has given Me, but raise them up at the last day.
And this is
the will of him that sent me, that every one which
seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have
everlasting life: and I will raise him up at
the last day.
For it is My Father’s will that
everyone who looks to
the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at
the last day.”
The Jews
then murmured at him, because he said, I am
the bread which came down from heaven.
At this,
the Jews began to
grumble about Jesus because He had said, “I am
the bread that came down from heaven.”
And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?
They were asking, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then can He say, ‘I have come down from heaven?’”
No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.
It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.
It is written in
the Prophets: ‘And
they will all be taught by God.’
Everyone who has heard
the Father and learned from Him comes to Me—
Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.
not that
anyone has seen
the Father except
the One who is from God; only He has seen
the Father.
I am that bread of life.
I am the bread of life.
Your fathers did eat
manna in
the wilderness, and are dead.
Your fathers
ate the manna in
the wilderness, yet
they died.
This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.
This is
the bread that comes down from heaven, so that
anyone may eat of it and not die.
I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
I am
the living bread that came down from heaven. If
anyone eats of this bread, he will live
forever. And this bread, which I will give for
the life of
the world, is My flesh.”
The Jews
therefore strove among
themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?
At this,
the Jews began to
argue among
themselves, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?”
Then Jesus said unto
them,
Verily,
verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat
the flesh of
the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of Man, you have no life in you.
Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at
the last day.
Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at
the last day.
As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.
Just as the living Father sent Me and I live because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on Me will live because of Me.
This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat
manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.
This is
the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your fathers, who
ate the manna and died,
the one who eats this bread will live
forever.”
Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?
On hearing it, many of His disciples said, “This is a difficult teaching. Who can accept it?”
When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples
murmured at it, he said unto
them,
Doth this
offend you?
Aware that His disciples were
grumbling about this teaching, Jesus asked
them, “Does this
offend you?
What and if ye shall see
the Son of man
ascend up where he was before?
Then what will happen if you see
the Son of Man
ascend to where He was before?
It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
The Spirit gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.
But
there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from
the beginning who
they were that believed not, and who should
betray him.
However,
there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus had known from
the beginning which of
them did not believe and who would
betray Him.)
And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.
Then Jesus said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to Me unless the Father has granted it to him.”
Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?
So Jesus asked the Twelve, “Do you want to leave too?”
Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.
Simon Peter replied, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life.
And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.
We believe and know that You are the Holy One of God.”
Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?
Jesus answered them, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!”
He spake of
Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should
betray him, being one of
the twelve.
He was speaking about
Judas,
the son of Simon
Iscariot. For although
Judas was one of
the Twelve, he was later to
betray Jesus.
After
these things Jesus walked in
Galilee: for he would not walk in
Jewry, because
the Jews sought to kill him.
After this, Jesus traveled throughout
Galilee. He did not want to travel in
Judea, because
the Jews
there were trying to kill Him.
Now the Jews’ feast of tabernacles was at hand.
However, the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles was near.
His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.
So Jesus’ brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go to
Judea, so that Your disciples
there may see
the works You are doing.
For
there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do
these things,
shew thyself to
the world.
For no one who wants to be known publicly acts in secret. Since You are doing
these things, show
Yourself to
the world.”
Then Jesus said unto
them, My time is not yet come: but your time is
alway ready.
Therefore Jesus told them, “Although your time is always at hand, My time has not yet come.
The world cannot
hate you; but me it hateth, because I
testify of it, that
the works
thereof are evil.
The world cannot
hate you, but it hates Me, because I
testify that its works are evil.
Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come.
Go up to the feast on your own. I am not going up to this feast, because My time has not yet come.”
When he had said
these words unto
them, he abode still in
Galilee.
Having said this, Jesus remained in
Galilee.
But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.
But after His brothers had gone up to the feast, He also went—not publicly, but in secret.
Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?
So the Jews were looking for Him at the feast and asking, “Where is He?”
And
there was much
murmuring among
the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said,
Nay; but he deceiveth
the people.
Many in
the crowds were
whispering about Him. Some said, “He is a good man.” But others replied, “No, He deceives
the people.”
Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of
the Jews.
Yet no one would speak publicly about Him for fear of the Jews.
Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.
About
halfway through
the feast, Jesus went up to
the temple courts and began to teach.
And
the Jews
marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?
The Jews were
amazed and asked, “How did this man attain such learning without having studied?”
Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.
“My teaching is not My own,” Jesus replied. “It comes from Him who sent Me.
If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.
If
anyone desires to do His will, he will know whether My teaching is from God or whether I speak on My own.
He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.
He who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory, but He who seeks
the glory of
the One who sent Him is a man of truth; in Him
there is no
falsehood.
Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?
Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps it. Why are you trying to kill Me?”
The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee?
“You have a
demon,”
the crowd replied. “Who is trying to kill You?”
Jesus answered and said unto
them, I have done one work, and ye all
marvel.
Moses
therefore gave unto you
circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of
the fathers;) and ye on
the sabbath day
circumcise a man.
But because Moses gave you
circumcision, you
circumcise a boy on
the Sabbath (not that it is from Moses, but from
the patriarchs.)
If a man on
the sabbath day receive
circumcision, that
the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye
angry at me, because I have made a man every
whit whole on
the sabbath day?
If a boy can be
circumcised on
the Sabbath so that
the law of Moses will not be broken, why are you
angry with Me for making
the whole man well on
the Sabbath?
Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
Stop judging by outward appearances, and start judging justly.”
Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?
Then some of the people of Jerusalem began to say, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?
But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?
Yet here He is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying anything to Him. Have the rulers truly recognized that this is the Christ?
Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.
But we know where this man is from. When the Christ comes, no one will know where He is from.”
Then cried Jesus in
the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.
Then Jesus, still teaching in
the temple courts,
cried out, “You know Me, and you know where I am from. I have not come of My own
accord, but He who sent Me is true. You do not know Him,
Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.
So they tried to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.
And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?
Many in the crowd, however, believed in Him and said, “When the Christ comes, will He perform more signs than this man?”
The Pharisees heard that
the people
murmured such things concerning him; and
the Pharisees and
the chief priests sent officers to take him.
When
the Pharisees heard
the crowd
whispering these things about Jesus,
they and
the chief priests sent officers to arrest Him.
Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me.
So Jesus said, “I am with you only a little while longer, and then I am going to the One who sent Me.
Then said
the Jews among
themselves,
Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto
the dispersed among
the Gentiles, and teach
the Gentiles?
At this,
the Jews said to one another, “Where does He intend to go that we will not find Him? Will He go where
the Jews are
dispersed among
the Greeks, and teach
the Greeks?
In
the last day, that great day of
the feast, Jesus stood and
cried, saying, If any man
thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
On
the last and greatest day of
the feast, Jesus stood up and called out in a loud voice, “If
anyone is
thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.
He that believeth on me, as
the scripture hath said, out of his
belly shall flow rivers of living water.
Whoever believes in Me, as
the Scripture has said: ‘Streams of living water will flow from within him.’”
(But this spake he of
the Spirit, which
they that believe on him should receive: for
the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet
glorified.)
He was speaking about
the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. For
the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been
glorified.
Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet.
On hearing these words, some of the people said, “This is truly the Prophet.”
Others said, This is
the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of
Galilee?
Others declared, “This is
the Christ.” But still others asked, “How can
the Christ come from
Galilee?
Hath not
the scripture said, That Christ cometh of
the seed of David, and out of
the town of
Bethlehem, where David was?
Doesn’t
the Scripture say that
the Christ will come from
the line of David and from
Bethlehem,
the village where David lived?”
So there was a division among the people because of him.
So there was division in the crowd because of Jesus.
And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.
Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him.
Then came
the officers to
the chief priests and
Pharisees; and
they said unto
them, Why have ye not brought him?
Then the officers returned to
the chief priests and
Pharisees, who asked
them, “Why didn’t you bring Him in?”
The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.
“Never has
anyone spoken like this man!”
the officers answered.
Have any of
the rulers or of
the Pharisees believed on him?
“Have any of
the rulers or
Pharisees believed in Him?
But this people who knoweth not
the law are
cursed.
But this crowd that does not know
the law,
they are under a
curse.”
Nicodemus saith unto
them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of
them,)
Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who himself was one of
them, asked,
They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of
Galilee? Search, and look: for out of
Galilee ariseth no prophet.
“Aren’t you also from
Galilee?”
they replied. “Look into it, and you will see that no prophet comes out of
Galilee.”
And every man went unto his own house.
Then each went to his own home.
Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.
But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.
Early in the morning He went back into the temple courts. All the people came to Him, and He sat down to teach them.
