But as soon as
this thy son was come, which hath
devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the
fatted calf.
But when
this son of yours returns from
squandering your wealth with prostitutes, you kill the
fattened calf for him!’
It was meet that we should make
merry, and be
glad: for
this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.
But it was fitting to
celebrate and be
glad, because
this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”
And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear
this of thee? give an account of thy
stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer
steward.
So he called him in to ask, ‘What is
this I hear about you? Turn in an account of your management, for you cannot be
manager any longer.’
And the lord
commended the unjust
steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of
this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.
The
Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all of
this and were
scoffing at Jesus.
And he
cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send
Lazarus, that he may dip the
tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am
tormented in
this flame.
So he
cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send
Lazarus to dip the
tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. For I am in
agony in
this fire.’
And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
And besides all
this, a great
chasm has been fixed between us and you, so that even those who wish cannot cross from here to you, nor can
anyone cross from there to us.’
For I have five brethren; that he may
testify unto them, lest they also come into
this place of
torment.
for I have five brothers. Let him
warn them, so that they will not also end up in
this place of
torment.’
And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of
mustard seed, ye might say unto
this sycamine tree, Be thou
plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.
And the Lord answered, “If you have faith the size of a
mustard seed, you can say to
this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.
There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.
Was no one found except this foreigner to return and give glory to God?”
But first must he suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation.
But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.
And he spake a parable unto them to
this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to
faint;
Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray at all times and not lose heart:
Yet because
this widow troubleth me, I will
avenge her, lest by her continual coming she
weary me.
yet because
this widow keeps
pestering me, I will give her justice. Then she will stop wearing me out with her perpetual requests.’”
And he spake
this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and
despised others:
To some who trusted in their own righteousness and viewed others with contempt, He also told this parable:
The
Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I
thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as
this publican.
The
Pharisee stood by himself and prayed, ‘God, I
thank You that I am not like the other men—swindlers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like
this tax
collector.
I tell you,
this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be
abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be
exalted.
I tell you,
this man, rather than the
Pharisee, went home justified. For
everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be
exalted.”
And they brought unto him also infants, that he would touch them: but when his disciples saw it, they
rebuked them.
Now people were even bringing their
babies to Jesus for Him to place His hands on them. And when the disciples saw
this, they
rebuked those who brought them.
Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have
treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.
On hearing
this, Jesus told him, “You still lack one thing: Sell everything you own and give to the poor, and you will have
treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.”
And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich.
But when the ruler heard
this, he became very
sad, because he was extremely wealthy.
And they that heard it said, Who then can be saved?
Those who heard this asked, “Who then can be saved?”
Who shall not receive
manifold more in
this present time, and in the world to come life
everlasting.
will fail to receive many times more in this age—and in the age to come, eternal life.”
And they understood none of these things: and
this saying was
hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken.
But the disciples did not understand any of these things. The meaning was hidden from them, and they did not
comprehend what He was saying.
And immediately he received his sight, and followed him,
glorifying God: and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise unto God.
Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus,
glorifying God. And all the people who saw
this gave praise to God.
And when they saw it, they all
murmured, saying, That he was gone to be
guest with a man that is a
sinner.
And all who saw
this began to
grumble, saying, “He has gone to be the
guest of a sinful man!”
And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.
Jesus said to him, “
Today salvation has come to
this house, because
this man too is a son of Abraham.
And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was
nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear.
While the people were
listening to
this, Jesus proceeded to tell them a parable, because He was near Jerusalem and they thought the kingdom of God would appear
imminently.
And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.
Beforehand, he called ten of his servants and gave them ten
minas. ‘Conduct business with
this until I return,’ he said.
But his citizens
hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have
this man to reign over us.
But his subjects
hated him and sent a
delegation after him to say, ‘We do not want
this man to rule over us.’
And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities.
And to this one he said, ‘You shall have authority over five cities.’
And when he had thus spoken, he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem.
After Jesus had said
this, He went on
ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in
this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are
hid from thine eyes.
and said, “If only you had known on this day what would bring you peace! But now it is hidden from your eyes.
And spake unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority?
“Tell us,” they said, “by what authority are You doing these things, and who gave You this authority?”
Then began he to speak to the people
this parable; A certain man planted a
vineyard, and let it forth to
husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time.
Then He proceeded to tell the people
this parable: “A man planted a
vineyard, rented it out to some tenants, and went away for a long time.
But when the
husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying,
This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.
But when the tenants saw the son, they discussed it among themselves and said, ‘This is the heir. Let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’
He shall come and destroy these
husbandmen, and shall give the
vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God
forbid.
He will come and kill those tenants, and will give the
vineyard to others.” And when the people heard
this, they said, “May such a thing never happen!”
And he
beheld them, and said, What is
this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?
But Jesus looked directly at them and said, “Then what is the meaning of that which is written: ‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone’?
Everyone who falls on
this stone will be broken to pieces, but he on whom it falls will be
crushed.”
And the chief priests and the
scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken
this parable against them.
When the
scribes and chief priests realized that Jesus had spoken
this parable against them, they sought to arrest Him that very hour. But they were afraid of the people.
And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:
Jesus answered, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage.
And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all:
“Truly I tell you,” He said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others.
But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and
persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name’s sake.
But before all
this, they will seize you and
persecute you. On account of My name they will deliver you to the synagogues and prisons, and they will bring you before kings and governors.
And it shall turn to you for a testimony.
This will be your opportunity to serve as witnesses.
But
woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give
suck, in those days! for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon
this people.
How
miserable those days will be for
pregnant and
nursing mothers! For there will be great distress upon the land and wrath against
this people.
Verily I say unto you,
This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled.
Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have happened.
And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat
this passover with you before I suffer:
And He said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat
this Passover with you before My suffering.
And he took the cup, and gave
thanks, and said, Take
this, and divide it among
yourselves:
After taking the cup, He gave
thanks and said, “Take
this and divide it among
yourselves.
And he took bread, and gave
thanks, and
brake it, and gave unto them, saying,
This is my body which is given for you:
this do in
remembrance of me.
And He took the bread, gave
thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “
This is My body, given for you; do
this in
remembrance of Me.”
Likewise also the cup after
supper, saying,
This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
In the same way, after
supper He took the cup, saying, “
This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is poured out for you.
And they began to
enquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do
this thing.
Then they began to question among themselves which of them was going to do this.
And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the
cock shall not
crow this day, before that thou shalt
thrice deny that thou knowest me.
But Jesus replied, “I tell you, Peter, the
rooster will not
crow today until you have denied three times that you know Me.”
For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.
For I tell you that
this Scripture must be fulfilled in Me: ‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’ For what is written about Me is reaching its
fulfillment.”
Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
“Father, if You are willing, take this cup from Me. Yet not My will, but Yours be done.”
And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and
healed him.
But Jesus answered, “No more of
this!” And He touched the man’s ear and
healed him.
When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.
Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on Me. But this hour belongs to you and to the power of darkness.”
But a certain
maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said,
This man was also with him.
A servant
girl saw him seated in the firelight and looked intently at him. “
This man also was with Him,” she said.
And about the space of one hour after another
confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth
this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilaean.
About an hour later, another man insisted, “Certainly
this man was with Him, for he too is a
Galilean.”
And they began to
accuse him, saying, We found
this fellow
perverting the nation, and
forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King.
Then said
Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in
this man.
Then
Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no basis for a charge against
this man.”
And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all
Jewry, beginning from
Galilee to
this place.
But they kept
insisting, “He stirs up the people all over
Judea with His teaching. He began in
Galilee and has come all the way here.”
When
Pilate heard of
Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean.
And the same day
Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at
enmity between themselves.
That day Herod and
Pilate became friends; before
this time they had been enemies.
Said unto them, Ye have brought
this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in
this man touching those things
whereof ye
accuse him:
and said to them, “You brought me
this man as one who was
inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined Him here in your presence and found Him not guilty of your charges against Him.
And they
cried out all at once, saying, Away with
this man, and release unto us Barabbas:
But they all
cried out in
unison: “Away with
this man! Release Barabbas to us!”
And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore
chastise him, and let him go.
A third time he said to them, “What evil has
this man done? I have found in Him no
offense worthy of death. So after I
punish Him, I will release Him.”
And a
superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew,
THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Above Him was posted an inscription: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but
this man hath done nothing
amiss.
We are punished justly, for we are receiving what our actions deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”
And when Jesus had
cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I
commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.
Then Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Father, into Your hands I commit My Spirit.” And when He had said this, He breathed His last.
Now when the
centurion saw what was done, he
glorified God, saying, Certainly
this was a righteous man.
When the
centurion saw what had happened, he gave glory to God, saying, “Surely
this was a righteous man.”
And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done,
smote their breasts, and returned.
And when all the people who had gathered for
this spectacle saw what had happened, they returned home beating their breasts.
He went to
Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus.
It was Mary Magdalene, and
Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles.
It was Mary Magdalene,
Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told
this to the apostles.
And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of
Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:
“What things?” He asked. “The events involving Jesus of
Nazareth,” they answered. “
This man was a prophet, powerful in speech and action before God and all the people.
But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.
But we were hoping He was the One who would
redeem Israel. And besides all
this, it is the third day since these things took place.
And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet.
And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and feet.
And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
And He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,
John bare witness of him, and
cried, saying,
This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.
John
testified concerning Him. He
cried out, saying, “
This is He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because He was before me.’”
And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?
And this was John’s testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him, “Who are you?”
This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.
This is He of whom I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because He was before me.’
And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.
I have seen and
testified that
this is the Son of God.”
And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
And when the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.
“Woman, why does
this concern us?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”
This beginning of miracles did Jesus in
Cana of
Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.
Jesus performed
this, the first of His signs, at
Cana in
Galilee. He thus revealed His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.
After
this he went down to
Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples: and they continued there not many days.
After
this, He went down to
Capernaum with His mother and brothers and His disciples, and they stayed there a few days.
Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?
On account of this, the Jews demanded, “What sign can You show us to prove Your authority to do these things?”
Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.
Jesus answered, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up again.”
Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was
this temple in building, and
wilt thou rear it up in three days?
“This temple took forty-six years to build,” the Jews replied, “and You are going to raise it up in three days?”
When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.
After He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this. Then they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.
Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?
And
this is the
condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
And
this is the
verdict: The Light has come into the world, but men loved the darkness rather than the Light because their deeds were evil.
After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he
tarried with them, and
baptized.
He that hath the
bride is the
bridegroom: but the friend of the
bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the
bridegroom’s voice:
this my joy therefore is fulfilled.
The
bride belongs to the
bridegroom. The friend of the
bridegroom stands and listens for him, and is overjoyed to hear the
bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete.
The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?
“Sir,” the woman replied, “You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where then will You get this living water?
Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and
drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us
this well and
drank from it himself, as did his sons and his
livestock?”
Jesus answered and said unto her,
Whosoever drinketh of
this water shall
thirst again:
The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me
this water, that I
thirst not, neither come
hither to draw.
The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me
this water so that I will not get
thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews say that the place where one must worship is in Jerusalem.”
