So the LORD was with Joshua; and his fame was noised throughout all the country.
So the LORD was with Joshua, and his fame spread throughout the land.
And the king of
Ai he
hanged on a tree until
eventide: and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his
carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise
thereon a great
heap of stones, that remaineth unto this day.
He hung the king of
Ai on a tree until evening, and at
sunset Joshua commanded that they take down the body from the tree and
throw it down at the entrance of the city gate. And over it they raised a large pile of rocks, which remains to this day.
And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been
hid, and laid great stones in the cave’s mouth, which remain until this very day.
At
sunset Joshua ordered that they be taken down from the trees and
thrown into the cave in which they had hidden. Then large stones were placed against the mouth of the cave, and the stones are there to this day.
And from the plain to the sea of Chinneroth on the east, and unto the sea of the plain, even the salt sea on the east, the way to Beth-jeshimoth; and from the south, under Ashdoth-
pisgah:
as well as the Arabah east of the Sea of Chinnereth to the Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea), eastward
through Beth-jeshimoth, and southward below the slopes of
Pisgah.
By lot was their inheritance, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes, and for the half tribe.
Their inheritance was assigned by lot for the nine and a half tribes, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.
And the lot of the children of Joseph fell from Jordan by
Jericho, unto the water of
Jericho on the east, to the wilderness that goeth up from
Jericho throughout mount
Bethel,
The
allotment for the descendants of Joseph extended from the Jordan at
Jericho to the waters of
Jericho on the east,
through the wilderness that goes up from
Jericho into the hill country of
Bethel.
Give out from among you three men for each tribe: and I will send them, and they shall rise, and go through the land, and describe it according to the inheritance of them; and they shall come again to me.
Appoint three men from each tribe, and I will send them out to survey the land and map it out, according to the inheritance of each. Then they will return to me
And the men arose, and went away: and Joshua charged them that went to describe the land, saying, Go and walk
through the land, and describe it, and come again to me, that I may here cast lots for you before the LORD in
Shiloh.
As the men got up to go out, Joshua commanded them to map out the land, saying, “Go and survey the land, map it out, and return to me. Then I will cast lots for you here in
Shiloh in the presence of the LORD.”
And the men went and passed
through the land, and described it by cities into seven parts in a book, and came again to Joshua to the host at
Shiloh.
So the men departed and went
throughout the land,
mapping it city by city into seven portions. Then they returned with the document to Joshua at the camp in
Shiloh.
And their border on the north side was from Jordan; and the border went up to the side of
Jericho on the north side, and went up
through the mountains westward; and the goings out thereof were at the wilderness of Beth-
aven.
On the north side their border began at the Jordan, went up past the northern slope of
Jericho, headed west
through the hill country, and came out at the wilderness of Beth-
aven.
Speak to the children of Israel, saying,
Appoint out for you cities of refuge,
whereof I spake unto you by the hand of Moses:
And they spake unto them at
Shiloh in the land of
Canaan, saying, The LORD commanded by the hand of Moses to give us cities to dwell in, with the suburbs thereof for our cattle.
at
Shiloh in the land of
Canaan and said to them, “The LORD commanded
through Moses that we be given cities in which to live, together with pasturelands for our
livestock.”
And the children of Israel gave by lot unto the Levites these cities with their suburbs, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses.
So the Israelites
allotted to the Levites these cities, together with their pasturelands, as the LORD had commanded
through Moses.
And the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad and the half tribe of
Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of
Shiloh, which is in the land of
Canaan, to go unto the country of
Gilead, to the land of their possession,
whereof they were possessed, according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses.
So the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh left the Israelites at
Shiloh in the land of
Canaan to return to their own land of
Gilead, which they had acquired according to the command of the LORD
through Moses.
And with him ten princes, of each chief house a prince throughout all the tribes of Israel; and each one was an head of the house of their fathers among the thousands of Israel.
With him they sent ten chiefs—one family leader from each tribe of Israel, each the head of a family among the clans of Israel.
And I took your father Abraham from the other side of the flood, and led him
throughout all the land of
Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac.
But I took your father Abraham from beyond the Euphrates and led him
through all the land of
Canaan, and I multiplied his descendants. I gave him Isaac,
For the LORD our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of
bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people
through whom we passed:
For the LORD our God brought us and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and performed these great signs before our eyes. He also protected us throughout our journey and among all the nations through which we traveled.
And Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that overlived Joshua, and which had known all the works of the LORD, that he had done for Israel.
Israel had served the LORD throughout the days of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had experienced all the works that the LORD had done for Israel.
And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this?
and you are not to make a covenant with the people of this land, but you shall
tear down their altars.’ Yet you have not obeyed My voice. What is this you have done?
And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the LORD, that he did for Israel.
And the people served the LORD throughout the days of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him, who had seen all the great works that the LORD had done for Israel.
That through them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of the LORD to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not.
In this way I will test whether Israel will keep the way of the LORD by walking in it as their fathers did.”
And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would
hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.
These nations were left to test the Israelites, to find out whether they would keep the commandments of the LORD, which He had given their fathers through Moses.
Then Ehud went forth
through the
porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon him, and locked them.
Then Ehud went out
through the
porch, closing and locking the doors of the upper room behind him.
And it came to pass, when he was come, that he
blew a
trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.
On arriving in Seirah, he
blew the ram’s horn
throughout the hill country of Ephraim. The Israelites came down with him from the hills, and he became their leader.
Then Jael
Heber’s wife took a
nail of the tent, and took an hammer in her hand, and went softly unto him, and
smote the
nail into his temples, and fastened it into the ground: for he was fast
asleep and
weary. So he died.
But as he lay sleeping from
exhaustion,
Heber’s wife Jael took a tent
peg,
grabbed a hammer, and went silently to Sisera. She drove the
peg through his temple and into the ground, and he died.
And, behold, as
Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said unto him, Come, and I will
shew thee the man whom thou seekest. And when he came into her tent, behold, Sisera lay dead, and the
nail was in his temples.
When
Barak arrived in pursuit of Sisera, Jael went out to
greet him and said to him, “Come, and I will show you the man you are seeking.” So he went in with her, and there lay Sisera dead, with a tent
peg through his temple.
In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the
highways were unoccupied, and the travelers walked
through byways.
In the days of Shamgar son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the
highways were deserted and the travelers took the byways.
She put her hand to the
nail, and her right hand to the workmen’s hammer; and with the hammer she
smote Sisera, she
smote off his head, when she had pierced and
stricken through his temples.
She reached for the tent
peg, her right hand for the
workman’s hammer. She struck Sisera and
crushed his skull; she
shattered and pierced his temple.
And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Take thy father’s young
bullock, even the second
bullock of seven years old, and
throw down the altar of
Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the
grove that is by it:
On that very night the LORD said to
Gideon, “Take your father’s young bull and a second bull seven years old,
tear down your father’s altar to
Baal, and cut down the Asherah pole beside it.
Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let
Baal plead against him, because he hath
thrown down his altar.
So on that day
Gideon was called Jerubbaal, that is to say, “Let
Baal contend with him,” because he had
torn down
Baal’s altar.
And he sent messengers
throughout all
Manasseh; who also was gathered after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto
Zebulun, and unto
Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.
And the three hundred
blew the
trumpets, and the LORD set every man’s sword against his fellow, even
throughout all the host: and the host fled to Beth-
shittah in Zererath, and to the border of
Abel-meholah, unto Tabbath.
And when the three hundred rams’ horns sounded, the LORD set all the men in the camp against one another with their swords. The army fled to Beth-
shittah toward Zererah as far as the border of
Abel-meholah near Tabbath.
And
Gideon sent messengers
throughout all mount Ephraim, saying, Come down against the Midianites, and take before them the waters unto Beth-barah and Jordan. Then all the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and took the waters unto Beth-barah and Jordan.
Gideon sent messengers
throughout the hill country of Ephraim to say, “Come down against the Midianites and seize the waters of the Jordan
ahead of them as far as Beth-barah.” So all the men of Ephraim were called out, and they captured the waters of the Jordan as far as Beth-barah.
Then he called
hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and
slay me, that men say not of me, A woman
slew him. And his young man thrust him
through, and he died.
He quickly called his
armor-bearer, saying, “Draw your sword and kill me, lest they say of me, ‘A woman killed him.’” So
Abimelech’s
armor-bearer ran his sword
through him, and he died.
But when Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness unto the Red sea, and came to Kadesh;
But when Israel came up out of Egypt, they traveled through the wilderness to the Red Sea and came to Kadesh.
Then Israel sent messengers unto the king of
Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass
through thy land: but the king of
Edom would not
hearken thereto. And in like manner they sent unto the king of Moab: but he would not consent: and Israel abode in Kadesh.
Then Israel sent messengers to the king of
Edom, saying, ‘Please let us pass
through your land,’ but the king of
Edom would not
listen. They also sent messengers to the king of Moab, but he would not consent. So Israel stayed in Kadesh.
Then they went along
through the wilderness, and compassed the land of
Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other side of
Arnon, but came not within the border of Moab: for
Arnon was the border of Moab.
Then Israel traveled
through the wilderness and bypassed the lands of
Edom and Moab. They came to the east side of the land of Moab and camped on the other side of the
Arnon. But they did not enter the territory of Moab, since the
Arnon was its border.
And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the
Amorites, the king of
Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee,
through thy land into my place.
And Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the
Amorites, who ruled in
Heshbon, and said to him, ‘Please let us pass
through your land into our own place.’
But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
But Sihon would not trust Israel to pass
through his territory. So he gathered all his people,
encamped in Jahaz, and fought with Israel.
And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and
bewail my
virginity, I and my fellows.
She also said to her father, “Let me do this one thing: Let me
wander for two months
through the mountains with my friends and
mourn my
virginity.”
And it was told the Gazites, saying,
Samson is come
hither. And they compassed him in, and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all the night, saying, In the morning, when it is day, we shall kill him.
When the Gazites heard that
Samson was there, they surrounded that place and lay in wait for him all night at the city gate. They were quiet
throughout the night, saying, “Let us wait until
dawn; then we will kill him.”
But the men would not
hearken to him: so the man took his
concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and
abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.
But the men would not
listen to him. So the
Levite took his
concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and
abused her
throughout the night, and at
dawn they let her go.
And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his
concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel.
When he reached his house, he
picked up a knife, took hold of his
concubine, cut her limb by limb into twelve pieces, and sent her
throughout the territory of Israel.
And I took my
concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her
throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel: for they have committed
lewdness and folly in Israel.
Then I took my
concubine, cut her into pieces, and sent her
throughout the land of Israel’s inheritance, because they had committed a
lewd and disgraceful act in Israel.
And we will take ten men of an hundred
throughout all the tribes of Israel, and an hundred of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to
fetch victual for the people, that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly that they have wrought in Israel.
We will take ten men out of every hundred from all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred out of every thousand, and a thousand out of every ten thousand, to supply provisions for the army when they go to Gibeah in Benjamin to
punish them for the
atrocity they have committed in Israel.”
And the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, What wickedness is this that is done among you?
And the tribes of Israel sent men throughout the tribe of Benjamin, saying, “What is this wickedness that has occurred among you?
Moreover
Ruth the
Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day.
Moreover, I have acquired
Ruth the
Moabitess, Mahlon’s widow, as my wife, to raise up the name of the deceased
through his inheritance, so that his name will not disappear from among his brothers or from the gate of his home. You are witnesses
today.”
He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the
beggar from the
dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them
inherit the
throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD’S, and he hath set the world upon them.
He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the
needy from the ash
heap. He seats them among princes and bestows on them a
throne of honor. For the foundations of the earth are the LORD’s, and upon them He has set the world.
And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the LORD was against the city with a very great destruction: and he
smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had
emerods in their secret parts.
But after they had moved the ark to
Gath, the LORD’s hand was also against that city,
throwing it into great confusion and
afflicting the men of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumors.
So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it
slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction
throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.
Then the Ekronites assembled all the rulers of the Philistines and said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israel. It must return to its place, so that it will not kill us and our people!” For a deadly confusion had
pervaded the city; the hand of God was heavy upon it.
And he passed through mount Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalisha, but they found them not: then they passed through the land of Shalim, and there they were not: and he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they found them not.
So Saul passed
through the hill country of Ephraim and then
through the land of Shalishah, but did not find the
donkeys. He and the servant went
through the region of Shaalim, but they were not there. Then they went
through the land of Benjamin, and still they did not find them.
And the elders of
Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.
“Hold off for seven days,” replied the elders of
Jabesh, “and let us send messengers
throughout Israel. If there is no one to save us, we will surrender to you.”
And he took a yoke of oxen, and
hewed them in pieces, and sent them
throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying,
Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.
He took a pair of oxen, cut them into pieces, and sent them by messengers
throughout the land of Israel,
proclaiming, “This is what will be done to the oxen of
anyone who does not march behind Saul and Samuel.” Then the terror of the LORD fell upon the people, and they turned out as one man.
And
Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul
blew the
trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.
Then
Jonathan attacked the
Philistine outpost at Geba, and the Philistines heard about it. So Saul
blew the ram’s horn
throughout the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews hear!”
Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears:
And no
blacksmith could be found in all the land of Israel, because the Philistines had said, “The Hebrews must not be allowed to make swords or spears.”
So Michal let David down through a window: and he went, and fled, and escaped.
So Michal lowered David from the window, and he ran away and escaped.
See therefore, and take knowledge of all the
lurking places where he hideth himself, and come ye again to me with the certainty, and I will go with you: and it shall come to pass, if he be in the land, that I will search him out
throughout all the thousands of Judah.
Observe and find out all the places where he hides. Then come back to me with certainty, and I will go with you. If he is in the land, I will search him out among all the clans of Judah.”
Then said
Abishai to David, God hath delivered thine enemy into thine hand this day: now therefore let me
smite him, I pray thee, with the
spear even to the earth at once, and I will not
smite him the second time.
Abishai said to David, “
Today God has delivered your enemy into your hand. Now, therefore, please let me thrust the
spear through him into the ground with one stroke. I will not need to strike him twice!”
And the LORD hath done to him, as he spake by me: for the LORD hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand, and given it to thy neighbour, even to David:
He has done exactly what He spoke
through me: The LORD has
torn the
kingship out of your hand and given it to your
neighbor David.
Then said Saul unto his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me
through therewith; lest these
uncircumcised come and thrust me
through, and
abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was
sore afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.
Then Saul said to his
armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and run it
through me, or these
uncircumcised men will come and run me
through and
torture me!” But his
armor-bearer was
terrified and refused to do it. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it.
And they cut off his head, and
stripped off his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to
publish it in the house of their idols, and among the people.
They cut off Saul’s head,
stripped off his
armor, and sent messengers
throughout the land of the Philistines to
proclaim the news in the temples of their idols and among their people.
And
Abner and his men walked all that night
through the plain, and passed over Jordan, and went
through all Bithron, and they came to
Mahanaim.
And all that night
Abner and his men marched
through the Arabah. They crossed the Jordan, marched all morning, and arrived at
Mahanaim.
To
translate the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to set up the
throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from
Dan even to Beer-
sheba.
to transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul and to establish the
throne of David over Israel and Judah, from
Dan to
Beersheba.”
Now then do it: for the LORD hath spoken of David, saying, By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies.
Now take action, because the LORD has said to David, ‘Through My servant David I will save My people Israel from the hands of the Philistines and of all their enemies.’”
For when they came into the house, he lay on his bed in his
bedchamber, and they
smote him, and
slew him, and
beheaded him, and took his head, and
gat them away
through the plain all night.
They had entered the house while
Ish-bosheth was lying on his bed, and having
stabbed and killed him, they
beheaded him, took his head, and traveled all night by way of the Arabah.
And as the ark of the LORD came into the city of David, Michal Saul’s daughter looked
through a window, and saw king David
leaping and dancing before the LORD; and she
despised him in her heart.
As the ark of the LORD was entering the City of David, Saul’s daughter Michal looked down from a window and saw King David
leaping and dancing before the LORD, and she
despised him in her heart.
He shall build an house for my name, and I will
stablish the
throne of his kingdom for ever.
He will build a house for My Name, and I will establish the
throne of his kingdom
forever.
And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.
And he put garrisons in
Edom;
throughout all
Edom put he garrisons, and all they of
Edom became David’s servants. And the LORD preserved David
whithersoever he went.
He placed garrisons
throughout Edom, and all the Edomites were subject to David. So the LORD made David victorious wherever he went.
And he sent by the hand of
Nathan the prophet; and he called his name Jedidiah, because of the LORD.
and sent word
through Nathan the prophet to name him Jedidiah because the LORD loved him.
And he brought forth the people that were therein, and put them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under axes of iron, and made them pass
through the
brickkiln: and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of
Ammon. So David and all the people returned unto Jerusalem.
David brought out the people who were there and put them to work with saws, iron picks, and axes, and he made them work at the brick kilns. He did the same to all the
Ammonite cities. Then David and all his troops returned to Jerusalem.
Then he called his servant that ministered unto him, and said, Put now this woman out from me, and
bolt the door after her.
Instead, he called to his
attendant and said, “
Throw this woman out and
bolt the door behind her!”
And the woman of Tekoah said unto the king, My lord, O king, the iniquity be on me, and on my father’s house: and the king and his throne be guiltless.
But the woman of Tekoa said to the king, “My lord the king, may any
blame be on me and on my father’s house, and may the king and his
throne be guiltless.”
Then
Absalom sent
spies throughout the tribes of Israel with this message: “When you hear the sound of the horn, you are to say, ‘
Absalom reigns in
Hebron!’”
And I will come upon him while he is
weary and weak handed, and will make him afraid: and all the people that are with him shall
flee; and I will
smite the king only:
I will attack him while he is weak and
weary; I will
throw him into a
panic, and all the people with him will
flee; I will strike down only the king
Then said
Joab, I may not
tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them
through the heart of
Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.
But
Joab declared, “I am not going to wait like this with you!” And he took three spears in his hand and thrust them
through the heart of
Absalom while he was still alive in the oak tree.
And all the people were at
strife throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, The king saved us out of the hand of our enemies, and he delivered us out of the hand of the Philistines; and now he is fled out of the land for
Absalom.
And all the people
throughout the tribes of Israel were
arguing, “The king
rescued us from the hand of our enemies and delivered us from the hand of the Philistines, but now he has fled the land because of
Absalom.
And he went
through all the tribes of Israel unto
Abel, and to Beth-maachah, and all the Berites: and they were gathered together, and went also after him.
Sheba passed
through all the tribes of Israel to
Abel-beth-
maacah and
through the entire region of the Berites, who gathered together and followed him.
And they came and besieged him in
Abel of Beth-maachah, and they cast up a bank against the city, and it stood in the
trench: and all the people that were with
Joab battered the wall, to
throw it down.
The matter is not so: but a man of mount Ephraim,
Sheba the son of Bichri by name, hath lifted up his hand against the king, even against David: deliver him only, and I will depart from the city. And the woman said unto
Joab, Behold, his head shall be
thrown to thee over the wall.
That is not the case. But a man named
Sheba son of Bichri, from the hill country of Ephraim, has lifted up his hand against the king, against David. Deliver him alone, and I will depart from the city.” “Look,” the woman replied, “his head will be
thrown to you over the wall.”
Through the brightness before him were coals of fire
kindled.
From the brightness of His presence coals of fire
blazed forth.
For by thee I have run
through a
troop: by my God have I
leaped over a wall.
For in You I can charge an army; with my God I can scale a wall.
The Spirit of the LORD spake by me, and his word was in my tongue.
The Spirit of the LORD spoke through me; His word was on my tongue.
And the three mighty men
brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of
Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: nevertheless he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto the LORD.
So the three mighty men broke
through the
Philistine camp, drew water from the well near the gate of
Bethlehem, and brought it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out to the LORD,
For the king said to
Joab the captain of the host, which was with him, Go now
through all the tribes of Israel, from
Dan even to Beer-
sheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the number of the people.
So the king said to
Joab the commander of his army, who was with him, “Go now
throughout the tribes of Israel from
Dan to
Beersheba and register the troops, so that I may know their number.”
So when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.
At the end of nine months and twenty days, having gone through the whole land, they returned to Jerusalem.
So they sought for a fair
damsel throughout all the coasts of Israel, and found
Abishag a Shunammite, and brought her to the king.
Then they searched
throughout Israel for a beautiful
girl, and they found
Abishag the Shunammite and brought her to the king.
Go and get thee in unto king David, and say unto him,
Didst not thou, my lord, O king,
swear unto thine
handmaid, saying,
Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my
throne? why then
doth Adonijah reign?
Go at once to King David and say, ‘My lord the king, did you not
swear to your
maidservant, “Surely your son Solomon will reign after me, and he will sit on my
throne”? Why then has Adonijah become king?’
And she said unto him, My lord, thou swarest by the LORD thy God unto thine
handmaid, saying,
Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my
throne.
“My lord,” she replied, “you
yourself swore to your
maidservant by the LORD your God: ‘Surely your son Solomon will reign after me, and he will sit on my
throne.’
And thou, my lord, O king, the eyes of all Israel are upon thee, that thou shouldest tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
And as for you, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are upon you to tell them who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
And
Nathan said, My lord, O king, hast thou said, Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my
throne?
“My lord the king,” said
Nathan, “did you say, ‘Adonijah will reign after me, and he will sit on my
throne’?
Is this thing done by my lord the king, and thou hast not shewed it unto thy servant, who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?
Has my lord the king let this happen without informing your servant who should sit on the throne after my lord the king?”
Even as I
sware unto thee by the LORD God of Israel, saying,
Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my
throne in my
stead; even so will I certainly do this day.
I will carry out this very day exactly what I
swore to you by the LORD, the God of Israel: Surely your son Solomon will reign after me, and he will sit on my
throne in my place.”
Then ye shall come up after him, that he may come and sit upon my
throne; for he shall be king in my
stead: and I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah.
Then you shall go up with him, and he is to come and sit on my throne and reign in my place. For I have appointed him ruler over Israel and Judah.”
As the LORD hath been with my lord the king, even so be he with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord king David.
Just as the LORD was with my lord the king, so may He be with Solomon and make his throne even greater than that of my lord King David.”
And also Solomon sitteth on the throne of the kingdom.
Moreover, Solomon has taken his seat on the royal throne.
