Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to
Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, That which thou hast prayed to me against
Sennacherib king of Assyria I have heard.
Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to
Hezekiah: “This is
what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I have heard your prayer concerning
Sennacherib king of Assyria.
And this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such things as grow of themselves, and in the second year that which springeth of the same; and in the third year
sow ye, and
reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruits thereof.
And this will be a sign to you, O
Hezekiah: This year you will eat
what grows on its own, and in the second year
what springs from the same. But in the third year you will
sow and
reap; you will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an
arrow there, nor come before it with shield, nor cast a bank against it.
So this is
what the LORD says about the king of Assyria: ‘He will not enter this city or shoot an
arrow into it. He will not come before it with a shield or build up a siege
ramp against it.
In those days was
Hezekiah sick unto death. And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live.
In those days
Hezekiah became
mortally ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came to him and said, “This is
what the LORD says: ‘Put your house in order, for you are about to die; you will not recover.’”
I
beseech thee, O LORD, remember now how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And
Hezekiah wept sore.
“Please, O LORD, remember how I have walked before You faithfully and with wholehearted devotion; I have done
what was good in Your sight.” And
Hezekiah wept bitterly.
Turn again, and tell
Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will
heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the LORD.
“Go back and tell
Hezekiah the leader of My people that this is
what the LORD, the God of your father David, says: ‘I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. I will surely
heal you. On the third day from now you will go up to the house of the LORD.
And
Hezekiah said unto Isaiah,
What shall be the sign that the LORD will
heal me, and that I shall go up into the house of the LORD the third day?
Now
Hezekiah had asked Isaiah, “
What will be the sign that the LORD will
heal me and that I will go up to the house of the LORD on the third day?”
And Isaiah said, This sign shalt thou have of the LORD, that the LORD will do the thing that he hath spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten degrees, or go back ten degrees?
And Isaiah had replied, “This will be a sign to you from the LORD that He will do what He has promised: Would you like the shadow to go forward ten steps, or back ten steps?”
Then came Isaiah the prophet unto king
Hezekiah, and said unto him,
What said these men? and from whence came they unto thee? And
Hezekiah said, They are come from a far country, even from Babylon.
Then the prophet Isaiah went to King
Hezekiah and asked, “Where did those men come from, and
what did they say to you?” “They came from a distant land,”
Hezekiah replied, “from Babylon.”
And he said,
What have they seen in thine house? And
Hezekiah answered, All the things that are in mine house have they seen: there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shewed them.
“
What have they seen in your palace?” Isaiah asked. “They have seen everything in my palace,” answered
Hezekiah. “There is nothing among my treasures that I did not show them.”
Therefore thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Behold, I am bringing such evil upon Jerusalem and Judah, that
whosoever heareth of it, both his ears shall
tingle.
this is
what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Behold, I am bringing such
calamity upon Jerusalem and Judah that the news will
reverberate in the ears of all who hear it.
And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in all the way of David his father, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left.
And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD and walked in all the ways of his father David; he did not turn aside to the right or to the left.
And she said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Tell the man that sent you to me,
And Huldah said to them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Tell the man who sent you
Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the words of the book which the king of Judah hath read:
that this is
what the LORD says: I am about to bring
calamity on this place and on its people, according to all the words of the book that the king of Judah has read,
But to the king of Judah which sent you to
enquire of the LORD, thus shall ye say to him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, As touching the words which thou hast heard;
But as for the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the LORD, tell him that this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘As for the words that you heard,
Because thine heart was tender, and thou hast humbled
thyself before the LORD, when thou heardest
what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a
desolation and a
curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and
wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith the LORD.
because your heart was tender and you humbled
yourself before the LORD when you heard
what I spoke against this place and against its people, that they would become a
desolation and a
curse, and because you have
torn your clothes and
wept before Me, I have heard you,’ declares the LORD.
Then he said,
What title is that that I see? And the men of the city told him, It is the
sepulchre of the man of God, which came from Judah, and proclaimed these things that thou hast done against the altar of
Bethel.
Then the king asked, “
What is this monument I see?” And the men of the city replied, “It is the tomb of the man of God who came from Judah and pronounced these things that you have done to the altar of
Bethel.”
And of the children of
Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know
what Israel ought to do; the heads of them were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their commandment.
From
Issachar, men who understood the times and knew
what Israel should do: 200 chiefs with all their
kinsmen at their command.
Go and tell David my servant, Thus saith the LORD, Thou shalt not build me an house to dwell in:
“Go and tell My servant David that this is what the LORD says: You are not the one to build Me a house in which to dwell.
Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the
sheepcote, even from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be ruler over my people Israel:
Now then, you are to tell My servant David that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: I took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to be the ruler over My people Israel.
And David the king came and sat before the LORD, and said, Who am I, O LORD God, and what is mine house, that thou hast brought me hitherto?
Then King David went in, sat before the LORD, and said, “Who am I, O LORD God, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far?
What can David speak more to thee for the honour of thy servant? for thou knowest thy servant.
What more can David say to You for so honoring Your servant? For You know Your servant,
And
what one nation in the earth is like thy people Israel, whom God went to
redeem to be his own people, to make thee a name of greatness and terribleness, by driving out nations from before thy people, whom thou hast redeemed out of Egypt?
And who is like Your people Israel—the one nation on earth whom God went out to
redeem as a people for Himself? You made a name for
Yourself through great and
awesome wonders by driving out nations from before Your people, whom You redeemed from Egypt.
Be of good courage, and let us
behave ourselves
valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the LORD do that which is good in his sight.
Be strong and let us fight
bravely for our people and for the cities of our God. May the LORD do
what is good in His sight.”
Go and tell David, saying, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.
“Go and tell David that this is what the LORD says: ‘I am offering you three options. Choose one of them, and I will carry it out against you.’”
So
Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Choose thee
So
Gad went and said to David, “This is
what the LORD says: ‘You must choose
Either three years’ famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even the
pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore
advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.
between three years of famine, three months of being swept away before your enemies and overtaken by their swords, or three days of the sword of the LORD—days of plague upon the land, with the angel of the LORD
ravaging every part of Israel.’ Now then, decide how I should reply to Him who sent me.”
And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have
sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep,
what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be on me, and on my father’s house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.
And David said to God, “Was it not I who gave the order to count the people? I am the one who has
sinned and acted wickedly. But these sheep,
what have they done? O LORD my God, please let Your hand fall upon me and my father’s house, but do not let this plague remain upon Your people.”
And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the
threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; I give it all.
Ornan said to David, “My lord the king may take
whatever seems good. Look, I will give the oxen for the burnt offerings, the
threshing sledges for the wood, and the wheat for the grain offering—I will give it all.”
And king David said to Ornan,
Nay; but I will
verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer burnt offerings without cost.
“No,” replied King David, “I
insist on paying the full price, for I will not take for the LORD
what belongs to you, nor will I offer burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”
But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee.
But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? For everything comes from You, and from Your own hand we have given to You.
In that night did God appear unto Solomon, and said unto him, Ask what I shall give thee.
That night God appeared to Solomon and said, “Ask, and I will give it to you!”
And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, who hath with his hands fulfilled that which he spake with his mouth to my father David, saying,
and said: “Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who has fulfilled with His own hand what He spoke with His mouth to my father David, saying,
Thou which hast kept with thy servant David my father that which thou hast promised him; and spakest with thy mouth, and hast fulfilled it with thine hand, as it is this day.
You have kept Your promise to Your servant, my father David. What You spoke with Your mouth You have fulfilled with Your hand this day.
Now therefore, O LORD God of Israel, keep with thy servant David my father that which thou hast promised him, saying, There shall not fail thee a man in my sight to sit upon the throne of Israel; yet so that thy children take
heed to their way to walk in my law, as thou hast walked before me.
Therefore now, O LORD, God of Israel, keep for Your servant, my father David, what You promised when You said: ‘You will never fail to have a man to sit before Me on the throne of Israel, if only your descendants guard their way to walk in My law as you have walked before Me.’
Now then, O LORD God of Israel, let thy word be
verified, which thou hast spoken unto thy servant David.
And now, O LORD, God of Israel, please
confirm what You promised to Your servant David.
Then hear thou from heaven, and do, and judge thy servants, by requiting the wicked, by
recompensing his way upon his own head; and by
justifying the righteous, by giving him according to his righteousness.
then may You hear from heaven and act. May You judge Your servants,
condemning the wicked man by bringing down on his own head
what he has done, and
justifying the righteous man by rewarding him according to his righteousness.
When famine or plague comes upon the land, or
blight or
mildew or locusts or grasshoppers, or when their enemies
besiege them in their cities,
whatever plague or sickness may come,
Then
what prayer or
what supplication soever shall be made of any man, or of all thy people Israel, when every one shall know his own
sore and his own grief, and shall spread forth his hands in this house:
then may whatever prayer or petition Your people Israel make—each knowing his own afflictions and spreading out his hands toward this temple—
And Baalath, and all the store cities that Solomon had, and all the
chariot cities, and the cities of the
horsemen, and all that Solomon desired to build in Jerusalem, and in
Lebanon, and throughout all the land of his dominion.
as well as Baalath, all the store cities that belonged to Solomon, and all the cities for his
chariots and horses—
whatever he desired to build in Jerusalem,
Lebanon, and throughout the land of his dominion.
And king Solomon gave to the queen of
Sheba all her desire,
whatsoever she asked, beside that which she had brought unto the king. So she turned, and went away to her own land, she and her servants.
King Solomon gave the queen of
Sheba all she desired—
whatever she asked—far more than she had brought the king. Then she left and returned to her own country, along with her servants.
And king
Rehoboam took counsel with the old men that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying,
What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people?
Then King
Rehoboam consulted with the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How do you
advise me to
respond to these people?” he asked.
And he said unto them, What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people, which have spoken to me, saying, Ease somewhat the yoke that thy father did put upon us?
He asked them, “
What message do you
advise that we send back to these people who have spoken to me, saying, ‘
Lighten the yoke your father put on us’?”
And the young men that were brought up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou answer the people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it somewhat lighter for us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins.
The young men who had grown up with him replied, “This is how you should answer these people who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you should make it lighter.’ This is
what you should tell them: ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s
waist!
And when all Israel saw that the king would not
hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying,
What portion have we in David? and we have none inheritance in the son of
Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel: and now, David, see to thine own house. So all Israel went to their tents.
When all Israel saw that the king had refused to
listen to them, they answered the king: “
What portion do we have in David, and
what inheritance in the son of
Jesse? To your tents, O Israel! Look now to your own house, O David!” So all the Israelites went home,
Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren: return every man to his house: for this thing is done of me. And they obeyed the words of the LORD, and returned from going against
Jeroboam.
that this is
what the LORD says: ‘You are not to go up and fight against your brothers. Each of you must return home, for this word is from Me.’” So they
listened to the words of the LORD and turned back from going against
Jeroboam.
Then came Shemaiah the prophet to
Rehoboam, and to the princes of Judah, that were gathered together to Jerusalem because of
Shishak, and said unto them, Thus saith the LORD, Ye have
forsaken me, and therefore have I also left you in the hand of
Shishak.
Then Shemaiah the prophet came to
Rehoboam and the leaders of Judah who had gathered at Jerusalem because of
Shishak, and he said to them, “This is
what the LORD says: ‘You have
forsaken Me; therefore, I have
forsaken you into the hand of
Shishak.’”
And
Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God:
And
Asa did
what was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God.
And
Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah had made him horns of iron, and said, Thus saith the LORD, With these thou shalt
push Syria until they be consumed.
Now
Zedekiah son of Chenaanah had made for himself iron horns and declared, “This is
what the LORD says: ‘With these you shall
gore the Arameans until they are finished off.’”
And Micaiah said, As the LORD liveth, even what my God saith, that will I speak.
But Micaiah said, “As surely as the LORD lives, I will speak whatever my God tells me.”
Then there came out a spirit, and stood before the LORD, and said, I will
entice him. And the LORD said unto him,
Wherewith?
Then a spirit came forward, stood before the LORD, and said, ‘I will
entice him.’ ‘By
what means?’ asked the LORD.
And say, Thus saith the king, Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him with bread of
affliction and with water of
affliction, until I return in peace.
and tell them that this is what the king says: ‘Put this man in prison and feed him only bread and water until I return safely.’”
And said to the judges, Take
heed what ye do: for ye judge not for man, but for the LORD, who is with you in the judgment.
Then he said to the judges, “Consider carefully what you do, for you are not judging for man, but for the LORD, who is with you when you render judgment.
Wherefore now let the fear of the LORD be upon you; take
heed and do it: for there is no iniquity with the LORD our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of gifts.
And now, may the fear of the LORD be upon you. Be careful
what you do, for with the LORD our God there is no injustice or
partiality or
bribery.”
And
what cause
soever shall come to you of your brethren that dwell in their cities, between blood and blood, between law and commandment, statutes and judgments, ye shall even
warn them that they
trespass not against the LORD, and so wrath come upon you, and upon your brethren: this do, and ye shall not
trespass.
For every dispute that comes before you from your brothers who dwell in their cities—whether it regards
bloodshed or some other
violation of law, commandments, statutes, or ordinances—you are to
warn them, so that they will not
incur guilt before the LORD and wrath will not come upon you and your brothers. Do this, and you will not
incur guilt.
O our God,
wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we
what to do: but our eyes are upon thee.
Our God, will You not judge them? For we are powerless before this vast army that comes against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.”
And he said,
Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king
Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s.
And he said, “
Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem!
Listen, King
Jehoshaphat! This is
what the LORD says: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army, for the battle does not belong to you, but to God.
And he walked in the way of
Asa his father, and departed not from it, doing that which was right in the sight of the LORD.
And
Jehoshaphat walked in the way of his father
Asa and did not turn away from it; he did
what was right in the eyes of the LORD.
And there came a writing to him from
Elijah the prophet, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of David thy father, Because thou hast not walked in the ways of
Jehoshaphat thy father, nor in the ways of
Asa king of Judah,
Then a letter came to Jehoram from
Elijah the prophet, which stated: “This is
what the LORD, the God of your father David, says: ‘You have not walked in the ways of your father
Jehoshaphat or of
Asa king of Judah,
This is the thing that ye shall do; A third part of you entering on the sabbath, of the priests and of the Levites, shall be
porters of the doors;
This is what you are to do: A third of you priests and Levites who come on duty on the Sabbath shall keep watch at the doors,
And
Joash did that which was right in the sight of the LORD all the days of Jehoiada the priest.
And
Joash did
what was right in the eyes of the LORD all the days of Jehoiada the priest.
Now it came to pass, that at
what time the chest was brought unto the king’s office by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king’s
scribe and the high priest’s officer came and
emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to his place again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance.
Whenever the chest was brought by the Levites to the king’s overseers and they saw that there was a large amount of money, the royal
scribe and the officer of the high priest would come and empty the chest and carry it back to its place. They did this daily and gathered the money in abundance.
And they buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, both toward God, and toward his house.
And Jehoiada was buried with the kings in the City of David, because he had done what was good in Israel for God and His temple.
And the Spirit of God came upon
Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why
transgress ye the commandments of the LORD, that ye cannot
prosper? because ye have
forsaken the LORD, he hath also
forsaken you.
Then the Spirit of God came upon
Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest, who stood up before the people and said to them, “This is
what God says: ‘Why do you
transgress the commandments of the LORD so that you cannot
prosper? Because you have
forsaken the LORD, He has
forsaken you.’”
And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, but not with a perfect heart.
And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, but not wholeheartedly.
But he
slew not their children, but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, where the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin.
Yet he did not put their sons to death, but acted according to what is written in the Law, in the Book of Moses, where the LORD commanded: “Fathers must not be put to death for their children, and children must not be put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin.”
And
Amaziah said to the man of God, But
what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? And the man of God answered, The LORD is able to give thee much more than this.
Amaziah asked the man of God, “
What should I do about the hundred talents I have given to the army of Israel?” And the man of God replied, “The LORD is able to give you much more than this.”
And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father
Amaziah did.
And he did
what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father
Amaziah had done.
And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father Uzziah did:
howbeit he entered not into the temple of the LORD. And the people did yet corruptly.
And he did
what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father Uzziah had done. In addition, he did not enter the temple of the LORD. But the people still
behaved corruptly.
Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem: but he did not that which was right in the sight of the LORD, like David his father:
Ahaz was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem sixteen years. And unlike David his father, he did not do
what was right in the eyes of the LORD.
And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father had done.
And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father David had done.
And
Hezekiah rejoiced, and all the people, that God had prepared the people: for the thing was done suddenly.
Then
Hezekiah and all the people
rejoiced at
what God had prepared for the people, because everything had been accomplished so quickly.
And
Azariah the chief priest of the house of
Zadok answered him, and said, Since the people began to bring the offerings into the house of the LORD, we have had enough to eat, and have left
plenty: for the LORD hath blessed his people; and that which is left is this great store.
and
Azariah, the chief priest of the household of
Zadok, answered him, “Since the people began to bring their contributions into the house of the LORD, we have had enough to eat and there is
plenty left over, because the LORD has blessed His people; this great abundance is
what is left over.”
And thus did
Hezekiah throughout all Judah, and wrought that which was good and right and truth before the LORD his God.
So this is
what Hezekiah did throughout Judah. He did
what was good and upright and true before the LORD his God.
“This is
what Sennacherib king of Assyria says:
What is the basis of your confidence, that you remain in Jerusalem under siege?
Know ye not what I and my fathers have done unto all the people of other lands? were the gods of the nations of those lands any ways able to deliver their lands out of mine hand?
Do you not know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the lands? Have the gods of these nations ever been able to deliver their land from my hand?
And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the ways of David his father, and declined neither to the right hand, nor to the left.
And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD and walked in the ways of his father David; he did not turn aside to the right or to the left.
And she answered them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Tell ye the man that sent you to me,
And Huldah said to them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Tell the man who sent you
Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah:
that this is
what the LORD says: I am about to bring
calamity on this place and on its people, according to all the curses written in the book that has been read in the presence of the king of Judah,
And as for the king of Judah, who sent you to
enquire of the LORD, so shall ye say unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel concerning the words which thou hast heard;
But as for the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the LORD, tell him that this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘As for the words that you heard,
But he sent ambassadors to him, saying,
What have I to do with thee, thou king of Judah? I come not against thee this day, but against the house
wherewith I have war: for God commanded me to make
haste:
forbear thee from
meddling with God, who is with me, that he destroy thee not.
But Neco sent messengers to him, saying, “
What is the issue between you and me, O king of Judah? I have not come against you
today, but I am fighting another dynasty. God told me to
hurry; so stop
opposing God, who is with me, or He will destroy you!”
Now the rest of the acts of
Josiah, and his goodness, according to that which was written in the law of the LORD,
As for the rest of the acts of
Josiah, along with his deeds of loving devotion according to
what is written in the Law of the LORD—
Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, All the kingdoms of the earth hath the LORD God of heaven given me; and he hath charged me to build him an house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who is there among you of all his people? The LORD his God be with him, and let him go up.
“This is
what Cyrus king of Persia says: ‘The LORD, the God of heaven, who has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, has appointed me to build a house for Him at Jerusalem in Judah.
Whoever among you belongs to His people, may the LORD his God be with him, and may he go up.’”
Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, The LORD God of heaven hath given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he hath charged me to build him an house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah.
“This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: ‘The LORD, the God of heaven, who has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, has appointed me to build a house for Him at Jerusalem in Judah.
They kept also the feast of tabernacles, as it is written, and offered the daily burnt offerings by number, according to the custom, as the duty of every day required;
They also celebrated the Feast of Tabernacles in accordance with what is written, and they offered burnt offerings daily based on the number prescribed for each day.
Then said we unto them after this manner, What are the names of the men that make this building?
They also asked, “What are the names of the men who are constructing this building?”
Moreover I make a decree
what ye shall do to the elders of these Jews for the building of this house of God: that of the king’s goods, even of the tribute beyond the river,
forthwith expenses be given unto these men, that they be not hindered.
I
hereby decree
what you must do for these elders of the Jews who are rebuilding this house of God: The cost is to be paid in full to these men from the royal treasury out of the taxes of the provinces west of the Euphrates, so that the work will not be hindered.
And that which they have need of, both young bullocks, and rams, and lambs, for the burnt offerings of the God of heaven, wheat, salt, wine, and oil, according to the appointment of the priests which are at Jerusalem, let it be given them day by day without fail:
Whatever is needed—young bulls, rams, and lambs for burnt offerings to the God of heaven, as well as wheat, salt, wine, and oil, as requested by the priests in Jerusalem—must be given to them daily without fail.
Then Tatnai, governor on this side the river, Shethar-boznai, and their companions, according to that which
Darius the king had sent, so they did speedily.
In
response, Tattenai the governor of the region west of the Euphrates, Shethar-bozenai, and their associates
diligently carried out
what King
Darius had decreed.
And they set the priests in their divisions, and the Levites in their courses, for the service of God, which is at Jerusalem; as it is written in the book of Moses.
They also appointed the priests by their divisions and the Levites by their groups to the service of God in Jerusalem, according to what is written in the Book of Moses.
And
whatsoever shall seem good to thee, and to thy brethren, to do with the rest of the silver and the gold, that do after the will of your God.
You and your brothers may do whatever seems best with the rest of the silver and gold, according to the will of your God.
And if anything else is needed for the house of your God that you may have occasion to supply, you may pay for it from the royal treasury.
And I, even I
Artaxerxes the king, do make a decree to all the treasurers which are beyond the river, that
whatsoever Ezra the priest, the
scribe of the law of the God of heaven, shall require of you, it be done speedily,
I, King
Artaxerxes, decree to all the treasurers west of the Euphrates:
Whatever Ezra the priest, the
scribe of the Law of the God of heaven, may require of you, it must be provided
promptly,
Whatsoever is commanded by the God of heaven, let it be
diligently done for the house of the God of heaven: for why should there be wrath against the realm of the king and his sons?
Whatever is commanded by the God of heaven must be done
diligently for His house. For why should wrath fall on the realm of the king and his sons?
And I sent them with commandment unto
Iddo the chief at the place Casiphia, and I told them
what they should say unto
Iddo, and to his brethren the
Nethinims, at the place Casiphia, that they should bring unto us ministers for the house of our God.
And I sent them to
Iddo, the leader at Casiphia, with a message for him and his
kinsmen, the temple servants at Casiphia, that they should bring to us ministers for the house of our God.
And now, O our God,
what shall we say after this? for we have
forsaken thy commandments,
And now, our God,
what can we say after this? For we have
forsaken the commandments
Then arose
Ezra, and made the chief priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to
swear that they should do according to this word. And they
sware.
So
Ezra got up and made the leading priests, Levites, and all Israel take an oath to do
what had been said. And they took the oath.
Then the king said unto me, For
what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.
“What is your request?” replied the king. So I prayed to the God of heaven
And I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man
what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem: neither was there any beast with me, save the beast that I
rode upon.
I set out at night with a few men. I did not tell
anyone what my God had laid on my heart to do for Jerusalem. The only animal with me was the one on which I was riding.
