And Moses sent them to the war, a thousand of every tribe, them and
Phinehas the son of
Eleazar the priest, to the war,
with the holy instruments, and the
trumpets to blow in his hand.
And Moses sent the thousand from each tribe into battle, along
with Phinehas son of
Eleazar the priest, who took
with him the vessels of the sanctuary and the
trumpets for signaling.
And they
slew the kings of
Midian, beside the rest of them that were slain; namely, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, five kings of
Midian:
Balaam also the son of Beor they
slew with the sword.
Among the slain were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba—the five kings of
Midian. They also killed
Balaam son of Beor
with the sword.
And they burnt all their cities wherein they dwelt, and all their goodly castles, with fire.
Then they burned all the cities where the Midianites had lived, as well as all their encampments,
And Moses, and
Eleazar the priest, and all the princes of the congregation, went forth to meet them
without the camp.
And Moses,
Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the congregation went to meet them outside the camp.
And Moses was
wroth with the officers of the host,
with the captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, which came from the battle.
But Moses was
angry with the officers of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—who were returning from the battle.
Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him.
So now, kill all the boys, as well as every woman who has had relations with a man,
But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying
with him, keep alive for
yourselves.
All of you who have killed a person or touched the dead are to remain outside the camp for seven days. On the third day and the seventh day you are to
purify both
yourselves and your
captives.
Every thing that may
abide the fire, ye shall make it go through the fire, and it shall be clean: nevertheless it shall be
purified with the water of separation: and all that abideth not the fire ye shall make go through the water.
everything that can
withstand the fire—must be put through the fire, and it will be clean. But it must still be
purified with the water of
purification. And everything that cannot
withstand the fire must pass through the water.
And thirty and two thousand persons in all, of women that had not known man by lying with him.
and 32,000 women who had not
slept with a man.
For we will not
inherit with them on
yonder side Jordan, or forward; because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side Jordan eastward.
Yet we will not have an inheritance with them across the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has come to us on the east side of the Jordan.”
And Moses said unto them, If the children of
Gad and the children of
Reuben will pass
with you over Jordan, every man armed to battle, before the LORD, and the land shall be subdued before you; then ye shall give them the land of
Gilead for a possession:
And Moses said to them, “If the Gadites and Reubenites cross the Jordan
with you,
with every man armed for battle before the LORD, and the land is subdued before you, then you are to give them the land of
Gilead as a possession.
But if they will not pass over
with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of
Canaan.
But if they do not arm themselves and go across
with you, then they must accept their possession among you in the land of
Canaan.”
And Moses gave unto them, even to the children of
Gad, and to the children of
Reuben, and unto half the tribe of
Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the
Amorites, and the kingdom of
Og king of
Bashan, the land,
with the cities thereof in the coasts, even the cities of the country round about.
So Moses gave to the Gadites, to the Reubenites, and to the half-tribe of
Manasseh son of Joseph the kingdom of Sihon king of the
Amorites and the kingdom of
Og king of
Bashan—the land including its cities and the territory surrounding them.
These are the journeys of the children of Israel, which went forth out of the land of Egypt with their armies under the hand of Moses and Aaron.
These are the journeys of the Israelites when they came out of the land of Egypt by their divisions under the
leadership of Moses and Aaron.
And they departed from
Rameses in the first month, on the
fifteenth day of the first month; on the
morrow after the
passover the children of Israel went out
with an high hand in the sight of all the Egyptians.
On the
fifteenth day of the first month, on the day after the
Passover, the Israelites set out from
Rameses. They marched out defiantly in full view of all the Egyptians,
Command the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into the land of
Canaan; (this is the land that shall fall unto you for an inheritance, even the land of
Canaan with the coasts thereof:)
“Command the Israelites and say to them: When you enter the land of
Canaan, it will be
allotted to you as an inheritance
with these boundaries:
And the border shall go down to Jordan, and the goings out of it shall be at the salt sea: this shall be your land with the coasts thereof round about.
Then the border will go down along the Jordan and end at the Salt Sea. This will be your land, defined by its borders on all sides.”
For the tribe of the children of
Reuben according to the house of their fathers, and the tribe of the children of
Gad according to the house of their fathers, have received their inheritance; and half the tribe of
Manasseh have received their inheritance:
For the tribes of the Reubenites and Gadites, along
with the half-tribe of
Manasseh, have already received their inheritance.
And ye shall measure from without the city on the east side two thousand cubits, and on the south side two thousand cubits, and on the west side two thousand cubits, and on the north side two thousand cubits and the city shall be in the midst: this shall be to them the suburbs of the cities.
You are also to measure two thousand cubits outside the city on the east, two thousand on the south, two thousand on the west, and two thousand on the north, with the city in the center. These areas will serve as larger pasturelands for the cities.
So all the cities which ye shall give to the Levites shall be forty and eight cities: them shall ye give with their suburbs.
The total number of cities you give the Levites will be forty-eight, with their corresponding pasturelands.
And if he
smite him
with an instrument of iron, so that he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
If, however,
anyone strikes a person
with an iron object and kills him, he is a murderer; the murderer must surely be put to death.
And if he
smite him
with throwing a stone,
wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
Or if
anyone has in his hand a stone of deadly size, and he strikes and kills another, he is a murderer; the murderer must surely be put to death.
Or if he
smite him
with an hand weapon of wood,
wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
If
anyone has in his hand a deadly object of wood, and he strikes and kills another, he is a murderer; the murderer must surely be put to death.
Or in
enmity smite him
with his hand, that he die: he that
smote him shall surely be put to death; for he is a murderer: the
revenger of blood shall
slay the murderer, when he meeteth him.
or if in hostility he strikes him
with his hand and he dies, the one who struck him must surely be put to death; he is a murderer. When the
avenger of blood finds the murderer, he is to kill him.
But if he thrust him suddenly
without enmity, or have cast upon him any thing
without laying of wait,
Or
with any stone,
wherewith a man may die, seeing him not, and cast it upon him, that he die, and was not his enemy, neither sought his
harm:
or
without looking drops a heavy stone that kills him, but he was not an enemy and did not intend to
harm him,
And the congregation shall deliver the
slayer out of the hand of the
revenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to the city of his refuge,
whither he was fled: and he shall
abide in it unto the death of the high priest, which was
anointed with the holy oil.
The assembly is to protect the
manslayer from the hand of the
avenger of blood. Then the assembly will return him to the city of refuge to which he fled, and he must live there until the death of the high priest, who was
anointed with the holy oil.
But if the
slayer shall at any time come
without the border of the city of his refuge,
whither he was fled;
But if the
manslayer ever goes outside the limits of the city of refuge to which he fled
And the
revenger of blood find him
without the borders of the city of his refuge, and the
revenger of blood kill the
slayer; he shall not be guilty of blood:
and the
avenger of blood finds him outside of his city of refuge and kills him, then the
avenger will not be guilty of
bloodshed Whoso killeth any person, the murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of
witnesses: but one
witness shall not
testify against any person to cause him to die.
If
anyone kills a person, the murderer is to be put to death on the testimony of the
witnesses. But no one is to be put to death based on the testimony of a
lone witness.
And if they be married to any of the sons of the other tribes of the children of Israel, then shall their inheritance be taken from the inheritance of our fathers, and shall be put to the inheritance of the tribe
whereunto they are received: so shall it be taken from the lot of our inheritance.
But if they marry any of the men from the other tribes of Israel, their inheritance will be
withdrawn from the portion of our fathers and added to the tribe into which they marry. So our
allotted inheritance would be taken away.
This is the thing which the LORD
doth command concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, Let them marry to whom they think best; only to the family of the tribe of their father shall they marry.
This is what the LORD has commanded concerning the daughters of Zelophehad: They may marry
anyone they please, provided they marry
within a clan of the tribe of their father.
And every daughter, that possesseth an inheritance in any tribe of the children of Israel, shall be wife unto one of the family of the tribe of her father, that the children of Israel may enjoy every man the inheritance of his fathers.
Every daughter who possesses an inheritance from any
Israelite tribe must marry
within a clan of the tribe of her father, so that every
Israelite will possess the inheritance of his fathers.
And they were married into the families of the sons of
Manasseh the son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in the tribe of the family of their father.
They married
within the clans of the descendants of
Manasseh son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained
within the tribe of their father’s clan.
And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him.
At that time I charged your judges: “Hear the disputes between your brothers, and judge fairly between a man and his brother or a foreign resident.
Whither shall we go up? our brethren have discouraged our heart, saying, The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there.
Where can we go? Our brothers have made our hearts
melt, saying: ‘The people are larger and taller than we are; the cities are large,
with walls up to the heavens. We even saw the descendants of the
Anakim there.’”
Also the LORD was
angry with me for your sakes, saying, Thou also shalt not go in thither.
The LORD was also
angry with me on your account, and He said, “Not even you shall enter the land.
And the LORD said unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be
smitten before your enemies.
But the LORD said to me, “Tell them not to go up and fight, for I am not with you to keep you from defeat by your enemies.”
Meddle not
with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as a
footbreadth; because I have given mount
Seir unto
Esau for a possession.
Do not
provoke them, for I will not give you any of their land, not even a
footprint, because I have given Mount
Seir to
Esau as his possession.
For the LORD thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand: he knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the LORD thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.
Indeed, the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched over your journey through this vast wilderness. The LORD your God has been with you these forty years, and you have lacked nothing.
And the LORD said unto me, Distress not the Moabites, neither
contend with them in battle: for I will not give thee of their land for a possession; because I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a possession.
Then the LORD said to me, “Do not
harass the Moabites or
provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land, because I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as their possession.”
And when thou comest
nigh over against the children of
Ammon, distress them not, nor
meddle with them: for I will not give thee of the land of the children of
Ammon any possession; because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession.
But when you get close to the
Ammonites, do not
harass them or
provoke them, for I will not give you any of the land of the
Ammonites. I have given it to the descendants of Lot as their possession.”
Rise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the river
Arnon: behold, I have given into thine hand Sihon the Amorite, king of
Heshbon, and his land: begin to possess it, and
contend with him in battle.
“Arise, set out, and cross the
Arnon Valley. See, I have delivered into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of
Heshbon, and his land. Begin to take possession of it and
engage him in battle.
And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sihon king of
Heshbon with words of peace, saying,
So from the Wilderness of Kedemoth I sent messengers
with an offer of peace to Sihon king of
Heshbon, saying,
From Aroer, which is by the
brink of the river of
Arnon, and from the city that is by the river, even unto
Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us: the LORD our God delivered all unto us:
From Aroer on the
rim of the
Arnon Valley, along
with the city in the valley, even as far as
Gilead, not one city had walls too high for us. The LORD our God gave us all of them.
And the LORD said unto me, Fear him not: for I will deliver him, and all his people, and his land, into thy hand; and thou shalt do unto him as thou
didst unto Sihon king of the
Amorites, which dwelt at
Heshbon.
But the LORD said to me, “Do not fear him, for I have delivered him into your hand, along
with all his people and his land. Do to him as you did to Sihon king of the
Amorites, who lived in
Heshbon.”
All these cities were
fenced with high walls, gates, and bars; beside unwalled towns a great many.
All these cities were fortified with high walls and gates and bars, and there were many more unwalled villages.
And this land, which we possessed at that time, from Aroer, which is by the river
Arnon, and half mount
Gilead, and the cities thereof, gave I unto the Reubenites and to the Gadites.
So at that time we took possession of this land. To the Reubenites and Gadites I gave the land beyond Aroer along the
Arnon Valley, and half the hill country of
Gilead, along
with its cities.
And the rest of
Gilead, and all
Bashan, being the kingdom of
Og, gave I unto the half tribe of
Manasseh; all the region of
Argob,
with all
Bashan, which was called the land of giants.
The plain also, and Jordan, and the coast thereof, from Chinnereth even unto the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, under Ashdoth-
pisgah eastward.
The Jordan River in the Arabah bordered it from Chinnereth to the Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea)
with the slopes of
Pisgah to the east.
And I
besought the LORD at that time, saying,
At that time I also
pleaded with the LORD:
But the LORD was
wroth with me for your sakes, and would not hear me: and the LORD said unto me, Let it suffice thee; speak no more unto me of this matter.
But the LORD was
angry with me on account of you, and He would not
listen to me. “That is enough,” the LORD said to me. “Do not speak to Me again about this matter.
Get thee up into the top of
Pisgah, and lift up thine eyes westward, and northward, and southward, and eastward, and behold it
with thine eyes: for thou shalt not go over this Jordan.
Go to the top of
Pisgah and look to the west and north and south and east. See the land
with your own eyes, for you will not cross this Jordan.
And ye came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire unto the midst of heaven, with darkness, clouds, and thick darkness.
You came near and stood at the base of the mountain, a mountain
blazing with fire to the heavens,
with black clouds and deep darkness.
Furthermore the LORD was
angry with me for your sakes, and
sware that I should not go over Jordan, and that I should not go in unto that good land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance:
The LORD, however, was
angry with me on account of you, and He
swore that I would not cross the Jordan to enter the good land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.
Take
heed unto
yourselves, lest ye
forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made
with you, and make you a
graven image, or the likeness of any thing, which the LORD thy God hath forbidden thee.
Be careful that you do not
forget the covenant of the LORD your God that He made
with you; do not make an
idol for
yourselves in the form of anything He has forbidden you.
I call heaven and earth to
witness against you this day, that ye shall soon utterly perish from off the land
whereunto ye go over Jordan to possess it; ye shall not
prolong your days upon it, but shall utterly be destroyed.
I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you this day that you will quickly perish from the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess. You will not live long upon it, but will be utterly destroyed.
But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.
But if from there you will seek the LORD your God, you will find Him if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul.
(For the LORD thy God is a
merciful God;) he will not
forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor
forget the covenant of thy fathers which he
sware unto them.
For the LORD your God is a
merciful God; He will not
abandon you or destroy you or
forget the covenant
with your fathers, which He
swore to them by oath.
And because he loved thy fathers, therefore he chose their seed after them, and brought thee out in his sight with his mighty power out of Egypt;
Because He loved your fathers, He chose their descendants after them and brought you out of Egypt by His presence and great power,
Thou shalt keep therefore his statutes, and his commandments, which I command thee this day, that it may go well
with thee, and
with thy children after thee, and that thou mayest
prolong thy days upon the earth, which the LORD thy God giveth thee, for ever.
Keep His statutes and commandments, which I am giving you
today, so that you and your children after you may
prosper, and that you may live long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you for all time.
That the
slayer might
flee thither, which should kill his neighbour unawares, and
hated him not in times past; and that
fleeing unto one of these cities he might live:
The LORD our God made a covenant
with us in
Horeb.
The LORD our God made a covenant
with us at
Horeb.
The LORD made not this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day.
He did not make this covenant
with our fathers, but
with all of us who are alive here
today.
The LORD talked with you face to face in the mount out of the midst of the fire,
The LORD spoke with you face to face out of the fire on the mountain.
But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy
manservant, nor thy
maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine
ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is
within thy gates; that thy
manservant and thy
maidservant may rest as well as thou.
but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God, on which you must not do any work—neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your
manservant or
maidservant, nor your ox or
donkey or any of your
livestock, nor the foreigner
within your gates, so that your
manservant and
maidservant may rest as you do.
And remember that thou
wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the LORD thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.
Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. That is why the LORD your God has commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.
Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that your days may be long and that it may go well with you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.
Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour.
You shall not bear false
witness against your
neighbor.
These words the LORD spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he added no more. And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me.
The LORD spoke these commandments in a loud voice to your whole assembly out of the fire, the cloud, and the deep darkness on the mountain; He added nothing more. And He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me.
And it came to pass, when ye heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, (for the mountain did burn with fire,) that ye came near unto me, even all the heads of your tribes, and your elders;
And when you heard the voice out of the darkness while the mountain was
blazing with fire, all the heads of your tribes and your elders approached me,
And ye said, Behold, the LORD our God hath shewed us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire: we have seen this day that God
doth talk
with man, and he liveth.
and you said, “Behold, the LORD our God has shown us His glory and greatness, and we have heard His voice out of the fire.
Today we have seen that a man can live even if God speaks
with him.
O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever!
If only they had such a heart to fear Me and keep all My commandments always, so that it might be well
with them and
with their children
forever.
But as for thee, stand thou here by me, and I will speak unto thee all the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments, which thou shalt teach them, that they may do them in the land which I give them to possess it.
But you stand here with Me, that I may speak to you all the commandments and statutes and ordinances you are to teach them to follow in the land that I am giving them to possess.”
Ye shall walk in all the ways which the LORD your God hath commanded you, that ye may live, and that it may be well
with you, and that ye may
prolong your days in the land which ye shall possess.
You must walk in all the ways that the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live and
prosper and
prolong your days in the land that you will possess.
Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well
with thee, and that ye may increase
mightily, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth
with milk and honey.
Hear, O Israel, and be careful to observe them, so that you may
prosper and multiply greatly in a land flowing
with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has promised you.
And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
And it shall be, when the LORD thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he
sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not,
And when the LORD your God brings you into the land He
swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, that He would give you—a land
with great and splendid cities that you did not build,
And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells
digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full;
with houses full of every good thing
with which you did not fill them,
with wells that you did not
dig, and
with vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant—and when you eat and are satisfied,
And thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the LORD: that it may be well
with thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess the good land which the LORD
sware unto thy fathers,
Do what is right and good in the sight of the LORD, so that it may be well
with you and that you may enter and possess the good land that the LORD your God
swore to give your fathers,
Then thou shalt say unto thy son, We were Pharaoh’s
bondmen in Egypt; and the LORD brought us out of Egypt
with a mighty hand:
then you are to tell him, “We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.
And when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt
smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant
with them, nor
shew mercy unto them:
and when the LORD your God has delivered them over to you to defeat them, then you must
devote them to complete destruction. Make no treaty
with them and show them no mercy.
Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son.
Do not
intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons,
But thus shall ye deal
with them; ye shall destroy their altars, and break down their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their
graven images
with fire.
Instead, this is what you are to do to them:
tear down their altars,
smash their sacred pillars, cut down their Asherah poles, and burn their idols in the fire.
But because the LORD loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had
sworn unto your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out
with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of
bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
But because the LORD loved you and kept the oath He
swore to your fathers, He brought you out
with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;
Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps His covenant of loving devotion for a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commandments.
And repayeth them that
hate him to their face, to destroy them: he will not be
slack to him that hateth him, he will repay him to his face.
But those who
hate Him He repays to their faces
with destruction; He will not
hesitate to repay to his face the one who hates Him.
And thou shalt
consume all the people which the LORD thy God shall deliver thee; thine eye shall have no
pity upon them: neither shalt thou serve their gods; for that will be a
snare unto thee.
You must destroy all the peoples the LORD your God will deliver to you. Do not look on them
with pity. Do not worship their gods, for that will be a
snare to you.
But the LORD thy God shall deliver them unto thee, and shall destroy them with a mighty destruction, until they be destroyed.
But the LORD your God will give them over to you and throw them into great confusion, until they are destroyed.
The
graven images of their gods shall ye burn
with fire: thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be
snared therein: for it is an
abomination to the LORD thy God.
You must burn up the images of their gods; do not
covet the silver and gold that is on them or take it for
yourselves, or you will be ensnared by it; for it is
detestable to the LORD your God.
And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee
with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man
doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD
doth man live.
He humbled you, and in your hunger He gave you
manna to eat, which neither you nor your fathers had known, so that you might understand that man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.
A land wherein thou shalt eat bread
without scarceness, thou shalt not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest
dig brass.
a land where you will eat food
without scarcity, where you will lack nothing; a land whose rocks are iron and whose hills are ready to be mined for copper.
Who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness, wherein were
fiery serpents, and scorpions, and
drought, where there was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint;
He led you through the vast and
terrifying wilderness
with its
venomous snakes and scorpions, a
thirsty and waterless land. He brought you water from the rock of flint.
Who fed thee in the wilderness
with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end;
He fed you in the wilderness
with manna that your fathers had not known, in order to humble you and test you, so that in the end He might cause you to
prosper.
Hear, O Israel: Thou art to pass over Jordan this day, to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than
thyself, cities great and
fenced up to heaven,
Hear, O Israel:
Today you are about to cross the Jordan to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you,
with large cities fortified to the heavens.
Also in
Horeb ye
provoked the LORD to wrath, so that the LORD was
angry with you to have destroyed you.
When I was gone up into the mount to receive the tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant which the LORD made with you, then I abode in the mount forty days and forty nights, I neither did eat bread nor drink water:
When I went up on the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant that the LORD made
with you, I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights. I
ate no bread and
drank no water.
And the LORD delivered unto me two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words, which the LORD spake with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly.
Then the LORD gave me the two stone tablets, inscribed by the finger of God with the exact words that the LORD spoke to you out of the fire on the mountain on the day of the assembly.
So I turned and came down from the mount, and the mount burned with fire: and the two tables of the covenant were in my two hands.
So I went back down the mountain while it was
blazing with fire,
with the two tablets of the covenant in my hands.
