Howbeit the LORD God of Israel chose me before all the house of my father to be king over Israel for ever: for he hath chosen Judah to be the ruler; and of the house of Judah, the house of my father; and among the sons of my father he liked me to make me king over all Israel:
Yet the LORD, the God of Israel, chose me out of all my father’s house to be king over Israel
forever. For He chose Judah as leader, and from the house of Judah He chose my father’s household, and from my father’s sons He was pleased to make me king over all Israel.
Furthermore David the king said unto all the congregation, Solomon my son, whom alone God hath chosen, is
yet young and tender, and the work is great: for the palace is not for man, but for the LORD God.
Then King David said to the whole assembly, “My son Solomon, the one whom God has chosen, is young and inexperienced. The task is great because this palace is not for man, but for the LORD God.
And God said to Solomon, Because this was in thine heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth, or honour, nor the life of thine enemies, neither
yet hast asked long life; but hast asked wisdom and knowledge for
thyself, that thou mayest judge my people, over whom I have made thee king:
God said to Solomon, “Since this was in your heart instead of requesting riches or wealth or glory for
yourself or death for your enemies—and since you have not even requested long life but have asked for wisdom and knowledge to
govern My people over whom I have made you king—
Now therefore, O LORD God of Israel, keep with thy servant David my father that which thou hast promised him, saying, There shall not fail thee a man in my sight to sit upon the throne of Israel;
yet so that thy children take
heed to their way to walk in my law, as thou hast walked before me.
Therefore now, O LORD, God of Israel, keep for Your servant, my father David, what You promised when You said: ‘You will never fail to have a man to sit before Me on the throne of Israel, if only your descendants guard their way to walk in My law as you have walked before Me.’
Have respect therefore to the prayer of thy servant, and to his
supplication, O LORD my God, to
hearken unto the cry and the prayer which thy servant prayeth before thee:
Yet regard the prayer and
plea of Your servant, O LORD my God, so that You may hear the cry and the prayer that Your servant is praying before You.
When the heaven is shut up, and there is no rain, because they have
sinned against thee;
yet if they pray toward this place, and
confess thy name, and turn from their sin, when thou
dost afflict them;
When the
skies are shut and there is no rain because Your people have
sinned against You, and they pray toward this place and
confess Your name, and they turn from their sins because You have
afflicted them,
Yet if they
bethink themselves in the land
whither they are carried
captive, and turn and pray unto thee in the land of their captivity, saying, We have
sinned, we have done
amiss, and have dealt wickedly;
and when they come to their senses in the land to which they were taken, and they
repent and
plead with You in the land of their captors, saying, ‘We have
sinned and done wrong; we have acted wickedly,’
And king
Rehoboam took counsel with the old men that had stood before Solomon his father while he
yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people?
Then King
Rehoboam consulted with the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How do you
advise me to
respond to these people?” he asked.
Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, is risen up, and hath rebelled against his lord.
Yet Jeroboam son of Nebat, a servant of Solomon son of David, rose up and rebelled against his master.
Therefore he said unto Judah, Let us build these cities, and make about them walls, and towers, gates, and bars, while the land is
yet before us; because we have sought the LORD our God, we have sought him, and he hath given us rest on every side. So they built and
prospered.
So he said to the people of Judah, “Let us build these cities and
surround them with walls and towers, with doors and bars. The land is still ours because we have sought the LORD our God. We have sought Him and He has given us rest on every side.” So they built and
prospered.
Were not the Ethiopians and the Lubims a huge host, with very many
chariots and
horsemen?
yet, because thou
didst rely on the LORD, he delivered them into thine hand.
Were not the Cushites and Libyans a vast army with many
chariots and
horsemen?
Yet because you
relied on the LORD, He delivered them into your hand.
And
Asa in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great:
yet in his disease he sought not to the LORD, but to the physicians.
In the thirty-ninth year of his reign,
Asa became diseased in his feet, and his
malady became increasingly severe.
Yet even in his illness he did not seek the LORD, but only the physicians.
And the king of Israel said unto
Jehoshaphat, There is
yet one man, by whom we may
enquire of the LORD: but I
hate him; for he never
prophesied good unto me, but always evil: the same is Micaiah the son of Imla. And
Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.
The king of Israel answered, “There is still one man who can ask the LORD, but I
hate him because he never prophesies anything good for me, but only bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.” “The king should not say that!”
Jehoshaphat replied.
Howbeit the high places were not taken away: for as
yet the people had not prepared their hearts unto the God of their fathers.
The high places, however, were not removed; the people had not yet set their hearts on the God of their fathers.
Howbeit the LORD would not destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David, and as he promised to give a light to him and to his sons for ever.
Yet the LORD was unwilling to destroy the house of David, because of the covenant He had made with David, and since He had promised to maintain a lamp for David and his descendants
forever.
Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again unto the LORD; and they
testified against them: but they would not give ear.
Nevertheless, the LORD sent prophets to bring the people back to Him and to
testify against them; but they would not
listen.
But he
slew not their children, but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, where the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin.
Yet he did not put their sons to death, but acted according to what is written in the Law, in the Book of Moses, where the LORD commanded: “Fathers must not be put to death for their children, and children must not be put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin.”
And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father Uzziah did:
howbeit he entered not into the temple of the LORD. And the people did
yet corruptly.
And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father Uzziah had done. In addition, he did not enter the temple of the LORD. But the people still
behaved corruptly.
And in the time of his distress did he
trespass yet more against the LORD: this is that king
Ahaz.
In the time of his distress, King
Ahaz became even more unfaithful to the LORD.
Now therefore let not
Hezekiah deceive you, nor
persuade you on this manner, neither
yet believe him: for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God deliver you out of mine hand?
So now, do not let
Hezekiah deceive you, and do not let him mislead you like this. Do not believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver his people from my hand or from the hand of my fathers. How much less will your God deliver you from my hand!”
And his servants spake
yet more against the LORD God, and against his servant
Hezekiah.
And the servants of
Sennacherib spoke further against the LORD God and against His servant
Hezekiah.
Nevertheless the people did sacrifice still in the high places, yet unto the LORD their God only.
Nevertheless, the people still sacrificed at the high places, but only to the LORD their God.
For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was
yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father: and in the
twelfth year he began to
purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the
molten images.
In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young,
Josiah began to seek the God of his father David, and in the
twelfth year he began to
cleanse Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, the Asherah poles, the carved idols, and the cast images.
From the first day of the seventh month began they to offer burnt offerings unto the LORD. But the foundation of the temple of the LORD was not yet laid.
On the first day of the seventh month, the Israelites began to offer burnt offerings to the LORD, although the foundation of the temple of the LORD had not been laid.
Then came the same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundation of the house of God which is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and yet it is not finished.
So this Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundation of the house of God in Jerusalem, and from that time until now it has been under construction, but it has not yet been completed.”
For we were
bondmen;
yet our God hath not
forsaken us in our
bondage, but hath extended mercy unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a
reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the desolations thereof, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.
Though we are slaves, our God has not
forsaken us in our
bondage, but He has extended to us grace in the sight of the kings of Persia, giving us new life to rebuild the house of our God and repair its ruins, and giving us a wall of protection in Judah and Jerusalem.
O LORD God of Israel, thou art righteous: for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee because of this.
O LORD, God of Israel, You are righteous! For we remain this day as a
remnant. Here we are before You in our guilt, though because of it no one can stand before You.”
And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of
Elam, answered and said unto
Ezra, We have
trespassed against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land:
yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing.
Then Shecaniah son of Jehiel, an
Elamite, said to
Ezra: “We have been unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women from the people of the land,
yet in spite of this, there is hope for Israel.
But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the
uttermost part of the heaven,
yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.
but if you return to Me and keep and practice My commandments, then even if your exiles have been banished to the
farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for My Name.’
And the rulers knew not
whither I went, or what I did; neither had I as
yet told it to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest that did the work.
The officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing, for I had not yet told the Jews or priests or nobles or officials or any other workers.
Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into
bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought unto
bondage already: neither is it in our power to
redeem them; for other men have our lands and vineyards.
We and our children are just like our countrymen and their children,
yet we are subjecting our sons and daughters to slavery. Some of our daughters are already
enslaved, but we are powerless to
redeem them because our fields and vineyards belong to others.”
Now that which was prepared for me daily was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine:
yet for all this required not I the bread of the governor, because the
bondage was heavy upon this people.
Each day one ox, six choice sheep, and some fowl were prepared for me, and once every ten days an abundance of all kinds of wine was provided. But I did not demand the food
allotted to the governor, because the burden on the people was so heavy.
Now it came to pass, when
Sanballat, and
Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates;)
When
Sanballat,
Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and the rest of our enemies heard that I had rebuilt the wall and not a
gap was left—though to that time I had not
yet installed the doors in the gates—
Yet they sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner.
Four times they sent me the same message, and each time I gave the same reply.
Now the city was large and great: but the people were few therein, and the houses were not builded.
Now the city was large and
spacious, but there were few people in it, and the houses had not
yet been rebuilt.
Yet thou in thy
manifold mercies forsookest them not in the wilderness: the
pillar of the cloud departed not from them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the
pillar of fire by night, to
shew them light, and the way wherein they should go.
You in Your great
compassion did not
forsake them in the wilderness. By day the
pillar of cloud never turned away from guiding them on their path; and by the night the
pillar of fire
illuminated the way they should go.
But after they had rest, they did evil again before thee: therefore leftest thou them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them:
yet when they returned, and
cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and many times
didst thou deliver them according to thy
mercies;
But as soon as they had rest, they again did evil in Your sight. So You abandoned them to the hands of their enemies, who had dominion over them. When they
cried out to You again, You heard from heaven, and You delivered them many times in Your
compassion.
And testifiedst against them, that thou mightest bring them again unto thy law:
yet they dealt proudly, and
hearkened not unto thy commandments, but
sinned against thy judgments, (which if a man do, he shall live in them;) and withdrew the shoulder, and
hardened their neck, and would not hear.
You
admonished them to turn back to Your law, but they were
arrogant and disobeyed Your commandments. They
sinned against Your ordinances, by which a man will live if he practices them. They
stubbornly shrugged their shoulders; they
stiffened their necks and would not obey.
Yet many years
didst thou
forbear them, and testifiedst against them by thy spirit in thy prophets:
yet would they not give ear: therefore gavest thou them into the hand of the people of the lands.
You were patient with them for many years, and Your Spirit
admonished them through Your prophets.
Yet they would not
listen, so You gave them into the hands of the
neighboring peoples.
Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city?
yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by
profaning the sabbath.
Did not your forefathers do the same things, so that our God brought all this
disaster on us and on this city? And now you are
rekindling His wrath against Israel by
profaning the Sabbath!”
Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things?
yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did
outlandish women cause to sin.
Did not King Solomon of Israel sin in matters like this? There was not a king like him among many nations, and he was loved by his God, who made him king over all Israel—yet foreign women drew him into sin.
Esther had not
yet shewed her kindred nor her people; as
Mordecai had charged her: for
Esther did the commandment of
Mordecai, like as when she was brought up with him.
Yet all this availeth me nothing, so long as I see
Mordecai the
Jew sitting at the king’s gate.
Yet none of this satisfies me as long as I see
Mordecai the
Jew sitting at the king’s gate.”
And while they were
yet talking with him, came the king’s chamberlains, and hasted to bring
Haman unto the
banquet that
Esther had prepared.
While they were still speaking with
Haman, the king’s eunuchs arrived and
rushed him to the
banquet that
Esther had prepared.
And
Esther spake
yet again before the king, and fell down at his feet, and
besought him with tears to put away the mischief of
Haman the Agagite, and his
device that he had devised against the Jews.
And once again,
Esther addressed the king. She fell at his feet
weeping and
begged him to
revoke the evil scheme of
Haman the Agagite, which he had devised against the Jews.
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
While he was still speaking, another
messenger came and reported: “The fire of God fell from heaven. It burned and consumed the sheep and the servants, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
While he was
yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away,
yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
While he was still speaking, another
messenger came and reported: “The Chaldeans formed three bands,
raided the camels, and took them away. They put the servants to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house:
While he was still speaking, another
messenger came and reported: “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house,
I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet; yet trouble came.
I am not at ease or quiet; I have no rest, for trouble has come.”
“If one ventures a word with you, will you be
wearied?
Yet who can keep from speaking?
The
roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken.
The lion may
roar, and the fierce lion may
growl,
yet the teeth of the young lions are broken.
Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.
Yet man is born to trouble as surely as sparks fly upward.
Then should I
yet have comfort;
yea, I would
harden myself in sorrow: let him not
spare; for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One.
It still brings me comfort, and joy through
unrelenting pain, that I have not denied the words of the Holy One.
Though thy beginning was small, yet thy latter end should greatly increase.
Though your beginnings were modest, your latter days will
flourish.
Whilst it is
yet in his greenness, and not cut down, it withereth before any other
herb.
While the shoots are still uncut, they dry up quicker than grass.
Behold, this is the joy of his way, and out of the earth shall others grow.
Surely this is the joy of his way; yet others will spring from the dust.
He will
yet fill your mouth with
laughter, and your lips with a
shout of joy.
Whom, though I were righteous,
yet would I not answer, but I would make
supplication to my judge.
For even if I were right, I could not answer. I could only
beg my Judge for mercy.
If I had called, and he had answered me;
yet would I not believe that he had
hearkened unto my voice.
If I summoned Him and He answered me, I do not believe He would
listen to my voice.
Though I were perfect,
yet would I not know my soul: I would
despise my life.
then You would
plunge me into the pit, and even my own clothes would
despise me.
Thine hands have made me and fashioned me together round about;
yet thou
dost destroy me.
Your hands shaped me and altogether formed me. Would You now turn and destroy me?
And these things hast thou
hid in thine heart: I know that this is with thee.
Yet You concealed these things in Your heart, and I know that this was in Your mind:
If I be wicked,
woe unto me; and if I be righteous,
yet will I not lift up my head. I am full of confusion; therefore see thou mine
affliction;
If I am guilty,
woe to me! And even if I am righteous, I cannot lift my head. I am full of shame and aware of my
affliction.
Surely I would speak to the
Almighty, and I desire to reason with God.
Yet I desire to speak to the
Almighty and
argue my case before God.
Though he
slay me,
yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him.
Though He
slay me, I will hope in Him. I will still defend my ways to His face.
Yet through the
scent of water it will
bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.
Not for any injustice in mine hands: also my prayer is pure.
yet my hands are free of violence and my prayer is pure.
The righteous also shall hold on his way, and he that hath clean hands shall be stronger and stronger.
Yet a righteous one holds to his way, and the one with clean hands grows stronger.
And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:
Even after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God.
Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung: they which have seen him shall say, Where is he?
he will perish
forever, like his own dung; those who had seen him will ask, ‘Where is he?’
Yet his meat in his
bowels is turned, it is the gall of asps within him.
yet in his stomach his food
sours into the
venom of cobras within him.
Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways.
Yet they say to God: ‘Leave us alone! For we have no desire to know Your ways.
And another dieth in the bitterness of his soul, and never eateth with pleasure.
Yet another man dies in the bitterness of his soul, having never tasted prosperity.
Yet shall he be brought to the grave, and shall remain in the tomb.
He is carried to the grave, and watch is kept over his tomb.
And thou sayest, How
doth God know? can he judge through the dark cloud?
Yet you say: ‘What does God know? Does He judge through thick darkness?
Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
But it was He who filled their houses with good things; so I stay far from the counsel of the wicked.
But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.
Yet He knows the way I have taken; when He has tested me, I will come forth as gold.
Because I was not cut off before the darkness, neither hath he covered the darkness from my face.
Yet I am not silenced by the darkness, by the thick darkness that covers my face.
Men
groan from out of the city, and the soul of the wounded crieth out:
yet God layeth not folly to them.
From the city, men
groan, and the souls of the wounded cry out,
yet God charges no one with
wrongdoing.
He draweth also the mighty with his power: he riseth up, and no man is sure of life.
Yet by His power, God drags away the mighty; though rising up, they have no assurance of life.
Though it be given him to be in safety,
whereon he resteth;
yet his eyes are upon their ways.
He gives them a sense of security, but His eyes are on their ways.
He bindeth up the waters in his thick clouds; and the cloud is not rent under them.
He wraps up the waters in His clouds,
yet the clouds do not
burst under their own weight.
When the
Almighty was
yet with me, when my children were about me;
when the
Almighty was still with me and my children were around me,
Howbeit he will not stretch out his hand to the grave, though they cry in his destruction.
Yet no one stretches out his hand to a ruined man when he
cries for help in his distress.
Also against his three friends was his wrath
kindled, because they had found no answer, and
yet had condemned Job.
and he burned with anger against Job’s three friends because they had failed to
refute Job, and
yet had condemned him.
Behold, he findeth occasions against me, he counteth me for his enemy,
Yet God finds occasions against me; He counts me as His enemy.
For God speaketh once,
yea twice,
yet man perceiveth it not.
For God speaks in one way and in another, yet no one notices.
Yet if there is a
messenger on his side, one
mediator in a thousand, to tell a man what is right for him,
He looketh upon men, and if any say, I have
sinned, and
perverted that which was right, and it profited me not;
Then he sings before men with these words: ‘I have
sinned and
perverted what was right;
yet I did not get what I deserved.
For Job hath said, I am righteous: and God hath taken away my judgment.
For Job has declared, ‘I am righteous, yet God has deprived me of justice.
When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only:
But when He remains silent, who can
condemn Him? When He hides His face, who can see Him?
Yet He watches over both man and nation,
Although thou sayest thou shalt not see him, yet judgment is before him; therefore trust thou in him.
How much less, then, when you say that you do not see Him, that your case is before Him and you must wait for Him,
But now, because it is not so, he hath visited in his anger; yet he knoweth it not in great extremity:
and further, that in His anger He has not punished or taken much notice of folly!
Suffer me a little, and I will
shew thee that I have
yet to speak on God’s behalf.
“Bear with me a little longer, and I will show you that there is more to be said on God’s behalf.
What time she lifteth up herself on high, she scorneth the horse and his rider.
Yet when she proudly spreads her wings, she laughs at the horse and its rider.
Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of
Zion.
Stand in
awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still.
Selah.
Be
angry,
yet do not sin; on your bed, search your heart and be still.
Selah Ye have shamed the counsel of the poor, because the LORD is his refuge.
