Berean Standard Bible BSB Bible
In the day shalt thou make thy plant to grow, and in the morning shalt thou make thy seed to
flourish: but the harvest shall be a
heap in the day of grief and of
desperate sorrow.
though on the day you plant you make them grow, and on that morning you help your seed
sprout—
yet the harvest will
vanish on the day of disease and incurable pain.
The
watchman replies, “Morning has come, but also the night. If you would inquire, then inquire. Come back
yet again.”
Yet her profits and wages will be set apart to the LORD; they will not be stored or saved, for her profit will go to those who live before the LORD, for abundant food and fine clothing.
Let favour be shewed to the wicked, yet will he not learn righteousness: in the land of uprightness will he deal unjustly, and will not behold the majesty of the LORD.
Though grace is shown to the wicked man, he does not learn righteousness. In the land of righteousness he acts unjustly and fails to see the majesty of the LORD.
Yet the defenced city shall be
desolate, and the
habitation forsaken, and left like a wilderness: there shall the
calf feed, and there shall he lie down, and
consume the branches thereof.
For the fortified city lies deserted— a
homestead abandoned, a wilderness
forsaken. There the
calves graze, and there they lie down; they strip its branches bare.
And the glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley, shall be a
fading flower, and as the
hasty fruit before the summer; which when he that looketh upon it
seeth, while it is
yet in his hand he eateth it up.
The
fading flower of his beautiful
splendor, set on the summit above the fertile valley, will be like a ripe fig before the summer harvest:
Whoever sees it will take it in his hand and
swallow it.
To whom he said, This is the rest
wherewith ye may cause the
weary to rest; and this is the refreshing:
yet they would not hear.
to whom He has said: “This is the place of rest, let the
weary rest; this is the place of
repose.” But they would not
listen.
Yet I will distress
Ariel, and there shall be
heaviness and sorrow: and it shall be unto me as
Ariel.
Is it not
yet a very little while, and
Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field shall be esteemed as a forest?
And though the Lord give you the bread of
adversity, and the water of
affliction,
yet shall not thy teachers be removed into a corner any more, but thine eyes shall see thy teachers:
The Lord will give you the bread of
adversity and the water of
affliction, but your Teacher will no longer hide Himself—with your own eyes you will see Him.
Yet he also is wise, and will bring evil, and will not call back his words: but will arise against the house of the evildoers, and against the help of them that work iniquity.
Yet He too is wise and brings
disaster; He does not call back His words. He will rise up against the house of the wicked and against the allies of evildoers.
Therefore he hath poured upon him the
fury of his anger, and the strength of battle: and it hath set him on fire round about,
yet he knew not; and it burned him,
yet he laid it not to heart.
So He poured out on them His
furious anger and the fierceness of battle. It
enveloped them in flames, but they did not understand; it consumed them, but they did not take it to heart.
Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen:
But now
listen, O Jacob My servant, Israel, whom I have chosen.
Behold, all his fellows shall be
ashamed: and the workmen, they are of men: let them all be gathered together, let them stand up;
yet they shall fear, and they shall be
ashamed together.
Behold, all his companions will be put to shame, for the
craftsmen themselves are only human. Let them all
assemble and take their stand; they will all be brought to terror and shame.
The smith with the
tongs both worketh in the coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and worketh it with the strength of his arms:
yea, he is
hungry, and his strength faileth: he drinketh no water, and is
faint.
The
blacksmith takes a tool and labors over the coals; he fashions an
idol with hammers and forges it with his strong arms.
Yet he grows
hungry and loses his strength; he fails to drink water and grows
faint.
They bear him upon the shoulder, they carry him, and set him in his place, and he standeth; from his place shall he not remove:
yea, one shall cry unto him,
yet can he not answer, nor save him out of his trouble.
They lift it to their shoulder and carry it along; they set it in its place, and there it stands, not
budging from that spot. They cry out to it, but it does not answer; it saves no one from his troubles.
Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:
I declare the end from the beginning, and ancient times from what is still to come. I say, ‘My purpose will stand, and all My good pleasure I will
accomplish.’
Then I said, I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength for
nought, and in vain:
yet surely my judgment is with the LORD, and my work with my God.
But I said, “I have labored in vain, I have spent My strength in
futility and vanity;
yet My
vindication is with the LORD, and My reward is with My God.”
And now, saith the LORD that formed me from the
womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, Though Israel be not gathered,
yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the LORD, and my God shall be my strength.
And now says the LORD, who formed Me from the
womb to be His Servant, to bring Jacob back to Him, that Israel might be gathered to Him— for I am honored in the sight of the LORD, and My God is My strength—
The children which thou shalt have, after thou hast lost the other, shall say again in thine ears, The place is too strait for me: give place to me that I may dwell.
Yet the children of your
bereavement will say in your hearing, ‘This place is too small for us; make room for us to live here.’
Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows:
yet we did esteem him
stricken,
smitten of God, and
afflicted.
He was
oppressed, and he was
afflicted,
yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is
dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.
He was
oppressed and
afflicted,
yet He did not open His mouth. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so He did not open His mouth.
Yet it pleased the LORD to
bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall
prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall
prosper in his hand.
Yet it was the LORD’s will to
crush Him and to cause Him to suffer; and when His soul is made a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will
prolong His days, and the good pleasure of the LORD will
prosper in His hand.
Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the
spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made
intercession for the transgressors.
Therefore I will
allot Him a portion with the great, and He will divide the spoils with the strong, because He has poured out His life unto death, and He was numbered with the transgressors.
Yet He bore the sin of many and made
intercession for the transgressors.
The Lord GOD which gathereth the outcasts of Israel saith, Yet will I gather others to him, beside those that are gathered unto him.
Thus declares the Lord GOD, who gathers the
dispersed of Israel: “I will gather to them still others besides those already gathered.”
Thou art
wearied in the greatness of thy way;
yet saidst thou not, There is no hope: thou hast found the life of thine hand; therefore thou
wast not
grieved.
You are
wearied by your many journeys, but you did not say, “There is no hope!” You found
renewal of your strength; therefore you did not grow weak.
When thou criest, let thy companies deliver thee; but the wind shall carry them all away; vanity shall take them: but he that putteth his trust in me shall possess the land, and shall
inherit my holy mountain;
When you cry out, let your companies of idols deliver you!
Yet the wind will carry off all of them, a breath will take them away. But he who seeks refuge in Me will
inherit the land and possess My holy mountain.”
I was
enraged by his sinful
greed, so I struck him and
hid My face in anger;
yet he kept turning back to the desires of his heart.
Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and
forsook not the
ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God.
For day after day they seek Me and delight to know My ways, like a nation that does what is right and does not
forsake the justice of their God. They ask Me for righteous judgments; they delight in the nearness of God.”
And the sons of strangers shall build up thy walls, and their kings shall minister unto thee: for in my wrath I
smote thee, but in my favour have I had mercy on thee.
Foreigners will rebuild your walls, and their kings will serve you. Although I struck you in anger, yet in favor I will show you mercy.
Doubtless thou art our father, though Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel acknowledge us not: thou, O LORD, art our father, our
redeemer; thy name is from
everlasting.
Yet You are our Father, though Abraham does not know us and Israel does not acknowledge us. You, O LORD, are our Father; our
Redeemer from
Everlasting is Your name.
And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.
Even before they call, I will answer, and while they are still speaking, I will hear.
Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? or shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as
Zion travailed, she brought forth her children.
Who has heard of such as this? Who has seen such things? Can a country be born in a day or a nation be delivered in an instant?
Yet as soon as
Zion was in labor, she gave birth to her children.
Wherefore I will
yet plead with you, saith the LORD, and with your children’s children will I
plead.
Therefore, I will
contend with you again, declares the LORD, and I will bring a case against your children’s children.
Hath a nation changed their gods, which are
yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which
doth not profit.
Has a nation ever changed its gods, though they are no gods at all? Yet My people have exchanged their Glory for useless idols.
Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then art thou turned into the
degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me?
I had planted you like a choice vine from the very best seed. How could you turn
yourself before Me into a
rotten, wild vine?
For though thou wash thee with
nitre, and take thee much
sope,
yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord GOD.
Although you wash with
lye and use an abundance of soap, the
stain of your guilt is still before Me,” declares the Lord GOD.
Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us.
say to a tree, ‘You are my father,’ and to a stone, ‘You gave me birth.’ For they have turned their backs to Me and not their faces,
yet in the time of trouble they
beg, ‘Rise up and save us!’
Can a
maid forget her ornaments, or a
bride her
attire?
yet my people have forgotten me days without number.
Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will
plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not
sinned.
you say, ‘I am innocent. Surely His anger will turn from me.’ Behold, I will judge you, because you say, ‘I have not
sinned.’
They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man’s, shall he return unto her again? shall not that land be greatly
polluted? but thou hast played the
harlot with many lovers;
yet return again to me, saith the LORD.
“If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him to marry another, can he ever return to her? Would not such a land be completely
defiled? But you have played the
harlot with many lovers— and you would return to Me?” declares the LORD.
And I saw, when for all the causes whereby
backsliding Israel committed
adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of
divorce;
yet her
treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the
harlot also.
She saw that because faithless Israel had committed
adultery, I gave her a
certificate of
divorce and sent her away.
Yet that unfaithful sister Judah had no fear and
prostituted herself as well.
And
yet for all this her
treacherous sister Judah hath not turned unto me with her whole heart, but
feignedly, saith the LORD.
Yet in spite of all this, her unfaithful sister Judah did not return to Me with all her heart, but only in pretense,” declares the LORD.
For thus hath the LORD said, The whole land shall be
desolate;
yet will I not make a full end.
For this is what the LORD says: “The whole land will be
desolate, but I will not finish its destruction.
How shall I
pardon thee for this? thy children have
forsaken me, and
sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed
adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots’ houses.
“Why should I
forgive you? Your children have
forsaken Me and
sworn by gods that are not gods. I satisfied their needs,
yet they committed
adultery and assembled at the houses of prostitutes.
Nevertheless in those days, saith the LORD, I will not make a full end with you.
“Yet even in those days,” declares the LORD, “I will not make a full end of you.
Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not
tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof
toss themselves,
yet can they not prevail; though they
roar,
yet can they not pass over it?
Do you not fear Me?” declares the LORD. “Do you not
tremble before Me, the One who set the sand as the boundary for the sea, an
enduring barrier it cannot cross? The waves
surge, but they cannot prevail. They
roar but cannot cross it.
They are
waxen fat, they
shine:
yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless,
yet they
prosper; and the right of the
needy do they not judge.
They have grown fat and
sleek, and have
excelled in the deeds of the wicked. They have not taken up the cause of the fatherless, that they might
prosper; nor have they defended the rights of the
needy.
But they
hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.
Yet they did not
listen or
incline their ear, but they followed the
stubborn inclinations of their own evil hearts. They went backward and not forward.
Yet they
hearkened not unto me, nor inclined their ear, but
hardened their neck: they did worse than their fathers.
Yet they would not
listen to Me or
incline their ear, but they
stiffened their necks and did more evil than their fathers.
Yet hear the word of the LORD, O ye women, and let your ear receive the word of his mouth, and teach your daughters
wailing, and every one her neighbour
lamentation.
Now, O women, hear the word of the LORD. Open your ears to the word of His mouth. Teach your daughters to
wail, and one another to
lament.
Yet they obeyed not, nor inclined their ear, but walked every one in the imagination of their evil heart: therefore I will bring upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do; but they did them not.
Yet they would not obey or
incline their ears, but each one followed the
stubbornness of his evil heart. So I brought on them all the curses of this covenant I had commanded them to follow but they did not keep.”
Righteous art thou, O LORD, when I
plead with thee:
yet let me talk with thee of thy judgments: Wherefore
doth the way of the wicked
prosper? wherefore are all they happy that deal very
treacherously?
Righteous are You, O LORD, when I
plead before You.
Yet about Your judgments I wish to
contend with You: Why does the way of the wicked
prosper? Why do all the faithless live at ease?
Why shouldest thou be as a man
astonied, as a mighty man that cannot save?
yet thou, O LORD, art in the midst of us, and we are called by thy name; leave us not.
Why are You like a man taken by surprise, like a
warrior powerless to save?
Yet You are among us, O LORD, and we are called by Your name. Do not
forsake us!
Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that
prophesy in my name, and I sent them not,
yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed.
Therefore this is what the LORD says about the prophets who
prophesy in My name: I did not send them,
yet they say, ‘No sword or famine will touch this land.’ By sword and famine these very prophets will meet their end!
Then said the LORD unto me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind could not be toward this people: cast them out of my sight, and let them go forth.
Then the LORD said to me: “Even if Moses and Samuel should stand before Me, My heart would not go out to this people. Send them from My presence, and let them go.
She that hath borne seven languisheth: she hath given up the ghost; her sun is gone down while it was
yet day: she hath been
ashamed and confounded: and the residue of them will I deliver to the sword before their enemies, saith the LORD.
The mother of seven will grow
faint; she will
breathe her last breath. Her sun will set while it is still day; she will be disgraced and
humiliated. And the rest I will put to the sword in the presence of their enemies,” declares the LORD.
Woe is me, my mother, that thou hast borne me a man of
strife and a man of
contention to the whole earth! I have neither lent on
usury, nor men have lent to me on
usury;
yet every one of them
doth curse me.
Woe to me, my mother, that you have borne me, a man of
strife and conflict in all the land. I have neither lent nor borrowed,
yet everyone curses me.
Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that it shall no more be said, The LORD liveth, that brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt;
Yet behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when they will no longer say, ‘As surely as the LORD lives, who brought the Israelites up out of the land of Egypt.’
But they obeyed not, neither inclined their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear, nor receive instruction.
Because my people hath forgotten me, they have burned incense to vanity, and they have caused them to
stumble in their ways from the ancient paths, to walk in paths, in a way not cast up;
Yet My people have forgotten Me. They burn incense to worthless idols that make them
stumble in their ways, leaving the ancient roads to walk on
rutted bypaths instead of on the
highway.
Shall evil be
recompensed for good? for they have
digged a pit for my soul. Remember that I stood before thee to speak good for them, and to turn away thy wrath from them.
Should good be repaid with evil?
Yet they have
dug a pit for me. Remember how I stood before You to speak good on their behalf, to turn Your wrath from them.
Yet, LORD, thou knowest all their counsel against me to
slay me:
forgive not their iniquity, neither
blot out their sin from thy sight, but let them be overthrown before thee; deal thus with them in the time of thine anger.
But You, O LORD, know all their deadly plots against me. Do not
wipe out their guilt or
blot out their sin from Your sight. Let them be overthrown before You; deal with them in the time of Your anger.
For thus saith the LORD unto the king’s house of Judah; Thou art
Gilead unto me, and the head of
Lebanon:
yet surely I will make thee a wilderness, and cities which are not inhabited.
For this is what the LORD says concerning the house of the king of Judah: “You are like
Gilead to Me, like the summit of
Lebanon; but I will surely turn you into a desert, like cities that are uninhabited.
As I live, saith the LORD, though Coniah the son of
Jehoiakim king of Judah were the
signet upon my right hand,
yet would I
pluck thee thence;
“As surely as I live,” declares the LORD, “even if you, Coniah son of
Jehoiakim king of Judah, were a
signet ring on My right hand, I would pull you off.
I have not sent these prophets,
yet they ran: I have not spoken to them,
yet they
prophesied.
I did not send these prophets,
yet they have run with their message; I did not speak to them,
yet they have
prophesied.
Behold, I am against them that
prophesy false dreams, saith the LORD, and do tell them, and cause my people to
err by their lies, and by their lightness;
yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the LORD.
“Indeed,” declares the LORD, “I am against those who
prophesy false dreams and retell them to lead My people
astray with their
reckless lies. It was not I who sent them or commanded them, and they are of no benefit at all to these people,” declares the LORD.
Yet ye have not
hearkened unto me, saith the LORD; that ye might
provoke me to anger with the works of your hands to your own
hurt.
‘But to your own
harm, you have not
listened to Me,’ declares the LORD, ‘so you have
provoked Me to anger with the works of your hands.’
For I have not sent them, saith the LORD,
yet they
prophesy a lie in my name; that I might drive you out, and that ye might perish, ye, and the prophets that
prophesy unto you.
For I have not sent them, declares the LORD, and
yet they are
prophesying falsely in My name; therefore I will
banish you, and you will perish—you and the prophets who
prophesy to you.”
For I am with thee, saith the LORD, to save thee: though I make a full end of all nations
whither I have scattered thee,
yet will I not make a full end of thee: but I will correct thee in measure, and will not leave thee altogether unpunished.
For I am with you to save you, declares the LORD. Though I will completely destroy all the nations to which I have scattered you, I will not completely destroy you. Yet I will discipline you justly, and will by no means leave you unpunished.”
Thou shalt yet plant vines upon the mountains of Samaria: the planters shall plant, and shall eat them as common things.
Again you will plant vineyards on the hills of Samaria; the farmers will plant and enjoy the fruit.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; As
yet they shall use this speech in the land of Judah and in the cities thereof, when I shall bring again their captivity; The LORD
bless thee, O
habitation of justice, and mountain of
holiness.
This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: “When I restore them from captivity, they will once again speak this word in the land of Judah and in its cities: ‘May the LORD
bless you, O righteous dwelling place, O holy mountain.’
And the measuring line shall yet go forth over against it upon the hill Gareb, and shall compass about to Goath.
The measuring line will once again stretch out straight to the hill of Gareb and then turn toward Goah.
And thou hast said unto me, O Lord GOD,
Buy thee the field for money, and take witnesses; for the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.
Yet You, O Lord GOD, have said to me, ‘
Buy for
yourself the field with silver and call in witnesses, even though the city has been delivered into the hands of the Chaldeans!’”
And they have turned unto me the back, and not the face: though I taught them, rising up early and teaching them,
yet they have not
hearkened to receive instruction.
They have turned their backs to Me and not their faces. Though I taught them again and again, they would not
listen or
respond to discipline.
Moreover the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah the second time, while he was yet shut up in the court of the prison, saying,
While Jeremiah was still confined in the
courtyard of the guard, the word of the LORD came to him a second time:
Yet hear the word of the LORD, O
Zedekiah king of Judah; Thus saith the LORD of thee, Thou shalt not die by the sword:
Yet hear the word of the LORD, O
Zedekiah king of Judah. This is what the LORD says concerning you: You will not die by the sword;
Yet they were not afraid, nor rent their garments, neither the king, nor any of his servants that heard all these words.
Yet in hearing all these words, the king and his servants did not become
frightened or
tear their garments.
And
Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah and
Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, Pray now unto the LORD our God for us.
Yet King
Zedekiah sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah and
Zephaniah the priest, the son of Maaseiah, to Jeremiah the prophet with the message, “Please pray to the LORD our God for us!”
Now Jeremiah came in and went out among the people: for they had not put him into prison.
Now Jeremiah was free to come and go among the people, for they had not yet put him in prison.
For though ye had
smitten the whole army of the Chaldeans that fight against you, and there remained but wounded men among them,
yet should they rise up every man in his tent, and burn this city with fire.
Indeed, if you were to strike down the entire army of the Chaldeans that is fighting against you, and only wounded men remained in their tents, they would still get up and burn this city down.”
Now while he was not
yet gone back, he said, Go back also to Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon hath made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people: or go
wheresoever it seemeth convenient unto thee to go. So the captain of the guard gave him
victuals and a reward, and let him go.
But before Jeremiah turned to go, Nebuzaradan added, “Return to Gedaliah son of
Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed over the cities of Judah, and stay with him among the people, or go
anywhere else that seems right.” Then the captain of the guard gave him a
ration and a gift and released him.
And it came to pass the second day after he had slain Gedaliah, and no man knew it,
On the second day after the murder of Gedaliah, when no one yet knew about it,
Howbeit I sent unto you all my servants the prophets, rising early and sending them, saying, Oh, do not this
abominable thing that I
hate.
Yet I sent you all My servants the prophets again and again, saying: ‘Do not do this
detestable thing that I
hate.’
Yet a small number that escape the sword shall return out of the land of Egypt into the land of Judah, and all the
remnant of Judah, that are gone into the land of Egypt to
sojourn there, shall know whose words shall stand, mine, or theirs.
Those who escape the sword will return from Egypt to Judah, few in number, and the whole
remnant of Judah who went to dwell in the land of Egypt will know whose word will stand, Mine or theirs!
Fear thou not, O Jacob my servant, saith the LORD: for I am with thee; for I will make a full end of all the nations
whither I have driven thee: but I will not make a full end of thee, but correct thee in measure;
yet will I not leave thee wholly unpunished.
And you, My servant Jacob, do not be afraid, declares the LORD, for I am with you. Though I will completely destroy all the nations to which I have banished you, I will not completely destroy you. Yet I will discipline you justly, and will by no means leave you unpunished.”
Yet will I bring again the captivity of Moab in the latter days, saith the LORD. Thus far is the judgment of Moab.
Yet in the latter days I will restore Moab from captivity,” declares the LORD. Here ends the judgment on Moab.
And afterward I will bring again the captivity of the children of
Ammon, saith the LORD.
Yet afterward I will restore the
Ammonites from captivity,” declares the LORD.
But it shall come to pass in the latter days, that I will bring again the captivity of
Elam, saith the LORD.
“
Yet in the last days, I will restore
Elam from captivity,” declares the LORD.
For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; The daughter of Babylon is like a threshingfloor, it is time to
thresh her:
yet a little while, and the time of her harvest shall come.
For this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: “The Daughter of Babylon is like a
threshing floor at the time it is
trampled. In just a little while her harvest time will come.”
Though Babylon should mount up to heaven, and though she should
fortify the height of her strength,
yet from me shall spoilers come unto her, saith the LORD.
Even if Babylon ascends to the heavens and fortifies her lofty
stronghold, the destroyers I send will come against her,” declares the LORD.
This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.
Yet I call this to mind, and therefore I have hope:
But though he cause grief,
yet will he have
compassion according to the multitude of his
mercies.
Even if He causes grief, He will show
compassion according to His abundant loving devotion.
As for us, our eyes as yet failed for our vain help: in our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save us.
All the while our eyes were failing as we looked in vain for help. We watched from our towers for a nation that could not save us.
Rejoice and be
glad, O daughter of
Edom, that dwellest in the land of
Uz; the cup also shall pass through unto thee: thou shalt be
drunken, and shalt make
thyself naked.
And they, whether they will hear, or whether they will
forbear, (for they are a
rebellious house,)
yet shall know that there hath been a prophet among them.
And whether they
listen or refuse to
listen—for they are a
rebellious house—they will know that a prophet has been among them.
Yet if thou
warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.
But if you
warn a wicked man and he does not turn from his wickedness and his wicked way, he will die in his iniquity, but you will have saved
yourself.
