And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of
Gideon the son of
Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand hath God delivered
Midian, and
all the host.
His friend replied: “This is nothing less than the sword of
Gideon son of
Joash, the
Israelite. God has delivered
Midian and the whole camp into his hand.”
When I blow with a
trumpet, I and
all that are with me, then blow ye the
trumpets also on every side of
all the camp, and say, The sword of the LORD, and of
Gideon.
When I and
all who are with me blow our horns, then you are also to blow your horns from
all around the camp and
shout, ‘For the LORD and for
Gideon!’”
And they stood every man in his place round about the camp: and
all the host ran, and
cried, and fled.
Each
Israelite took his position around the camp, and the entire Midianite army fled, crying out as they ran.
And the three hundred
blew the
trumpets, and the LORD set every man’s sword against his fellow, even throughout
all the host: and the host fled to Beth-
shittah in Zererath, and to the border of
Abel-meholah, unto Tabbath.
And when the three hundred rams’ horns sounded, the LORD set
all the men in the camp against one another with their swords. The army fled to Beth-
shittah toward Zererah as far as the border of
Abel-meholah near Tabbath.
And the men of Israel gathered themselves together out of
Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of
all Manasseh, and pursued after the Midianites.
Then the men of Israel were called out from
Naphtali, Asher, and
all Manasseh, and they pursued the Midianites.
And
Gideon sent messengers throughout
all mount Ephraim, saying, Come down against the Midianites, and take before them the waters unto Beth-barah and Jordan. Then
all the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and took the waters unto Beth-barah and Jordan.
Gideon sent messengers throughout the hill country of Ephraim to say, “Come down against the Midianites and seize the waters of the Jordan
ahead of them as far as Beth-barah.” So
all the men of Ephraim were called out, and they captured the waters of the Jordan as far as Beth-barah.
Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.
Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with their army of about fifteen thousand men—
all that were left of the armies of the people of the east. A hundred and twenty thousand
swordsmen had already fallen.
And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued after them, and took the two kings of
Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and
discomfited all the host.
When Zebah and Zalmunna fled,
Gideon pursued and captured these two kings of
Midian, routing their entire army.
And
Gideon made an
ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and
all Israel went thither a
whoring after it: which thing became a
snare unto
Gideon, and to his house.
From
all this
Gideon made an
ephod, which he placed in Ophrah, his hometown. But soon
all Israel
prostituted themselves by worshiping it there, and it became a
snare to
Gideon and his household.
And the children of Israel remembered not the LORD their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:
The Israelites failed to remember the LORD their God who had delivered them from the hands of all their enemies on every side.
Neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely,
Gideon, according to
all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel.
They did not show kindness to the house of Jerubbaal (that is,
Gideon) for
all the good things he had done for Israel.
And
Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to
Shechem unto his mother’s brethren, and communed with them, and with
all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying,
Now
Abimelech son of Jerubbaal went to his mother’s brothers at
Shechem and said to them and to
all the clan of his mother,
Speak, I pray you, in the ears of
all the men of
Shechem, Whether is better for you, either that
all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are
threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.
“Please ask
all the leaders of
Shechem, ‘Is it better for you that seventy men,
all the sons of Jerubbaal, rule over you, or just one man?’ Remember that I am your own flesh and blood.”
And his mother’s brethren spake of him in the ears of
all the men of
Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow
Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother.
And when his mother’s brothers spoke
all these words about him in the presence of
all the leaders of
Shechem, their hearts were inclined to follow
Abimelech, for they said, “He is our brother.”
Then said
all the trees unto the
bramble, Come thou, and reign over us.
Finally all the trees said to the thornbush, ‘Come and reign over us.’
And the men of
Shechem set liers in wait for him in the top of the mountains, and they
robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told
Abimelech.
And
Abimelech rose up, and
all the people that were with him, by night, and they laid wait against
Shechem in four companies.
So
Abimelech and
all his troops set out by night and lay in wait against
Shechem in four companies.
And
Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and many were overthrown and wounded, even unto the entering of the gate.
but
Abimelech pursued him, and Gaal fled before him. And many Shechemites fell wounded
all the way to the entrance of the gate.
And
Abimelech, and the company that was with him,
rushed forward, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and the two other companies ran upon
all the people that were in the fields, and
slew them.
Then
Abimelech and the companies with him
rushed forward and took their stand at the entrance of the city gate. The other two companies
rushed against
all who were in the fields and struck them down.
And
Abimelech fought against the city
all that day; and he took the city, and
slew the people that was therein, and beat down the city, and
sowed it with salt.
And
all that day
Abimelech fought against the city until he had captured it and killed its people. Then he
demolished the city and
sowed it with salt.
And when
all the men of the tower of
Shechem heard that, they entered into an hold of the house of the god Berith.
On hearing of this,
all the leaders in the tower of
Shechem entered the inner chamber of the temple of El-berith.
And it was told
Abimelech, that
all the men of the tower of
Shechem were gathered together.
And when
Abimelech was told that
all the leaders in the tower of
Shechem were gathered there,
And
Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and
all the people that were with him; and
Abimelech took an
axe in his hand, and cut down a
bough from the trees, and took it, and laid it on his shoulder, and said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make
haste, and do as I have done.
he and
all his men went up to Mount Zalmon.
Abimelech took his
axe in his hand and cut a branch from the trees, which he lifted to his shoulder, saying to his men, “
Hurry and do what you have seen me do.”
And
all the people likewise cut down every man his
bough, and followed
Abimelech, and put them to the hold, and set the hold on fire upon them; so that
all the men of the tower of
Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.
So each man also cut his own branch and followed
Abimelech. Then they piled the branches against the inner chamber and set it on fire above them, killing
everyone in the tower of
Shechem, about a thousand men and women.
But there was a strong tower within the city, and thither fled
all the men and women, and
all they of the city, and shut it to them, and
gat them up to the top of the tower.
But there was a strong tower inside the city, and all the men, women, and leaders of the city fled there. They locked themselves in and went up to the roof of the tower.
And when the men of Israel saw that
Abimelech was dead, they departed every man unto his place.
And when the Israelites saw that
Abimelech was dead, they
all went home.
And
all the evil of the men of
Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the
curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.
And God also brought
all the wickedness of the men of
Shechem back upon their own heads. So the
curse of Jotham son of Jerubbaal came upon them.
And that year they
vexed and
oppressed the children of Israel: eighteen years,
all the children of Israel that were on the other side Jordan in the land of the
Amorites, which is in
Gilead.
who that very year
harassed and
oppressed the Israelites, and did so for eighteen years to
all the Israelites on the other side of the Jordan in
Gilead, the land of the
Amorites.
And the people and princes of
Gilead said one to another, What man is he that will begin to fight against the children of
Ammon? he shall be head over
all the inhabitants of
Gilead.
And the elders of
Gilead said unto
Jephthah, Therefore we turn again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of
Ammon, and be our head over
all the inhabitants of
Gilead.
They answered
Jephthah, “This is why we now turn to you, that you may go with us, fight the
Ammonites, and become leader over
all of us who live in
Gilead.”
Then
Jephthah went with the elders of
Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them: and
Jephthah uttered
all his words before the LORD in Mizpeh.
So
Jephthah went with the elders of
Gilead, and the people made him their leader and commander. And
Jephthah repeated
all his terms in the presence of the LORD at
Mizpah.
And the king of the children of
Ammon answered unto the messengers of
Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from
Arnon even unto
Jabbok, and unto Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again
peaceably.
The king of the
Ammonites answered
Jephthah’s messengers, “When Israel came up out of Egypt, they seized my land, from the
Arnon to the
Jabbok and
all the way to the Jordan. Now, therefore, restore it
peaceably.”
But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
But Sihon would not trust Israel to pass through his territory. So he gathered
all his people,
encamped in Jahaz, and fought with Israel.
And the LORD God of Israel delivered Sihon and
all his people into the hand of Israel, and they
smote them: so Israel possessed
all the land of the
Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.
Then the LORD, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and
all his people into the hand of Israel, who defeated them. So Israel took possession of
all the land of the
Amorites who inhabited that country,
And they possessed
all the coasts of the
Amorites, from
Arnon even unto
Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto Jordan.
seizing
all the land from the
Arnon to the
Jabbok and from the wilderness to the Jordan.
While Israel dwelt in
Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in
all the cities that be along by the coasts of
Arnon, three hundred years? why therefore did ye not recover them within that time?
For three hundred years Israel has lived in
Heshbon, Aroer, and their villages, as well as
all the cities along the banks of the
Arnon. Why did you not take them back during that time?
Then
Jephthah gathered together
all the men of
Gilead, and fought with Ephraim: and the men of
Gilead smote Ephraim, because they said, Ye Gileadites are fugitives of Ephraim among the Ephraimites, and among the Manassites.
Jephthah then gathered
all the men of
Gilead and fought against Ephraim. And the men of
Gilead struck them down because the Ephraimites had said, “You Gileadites are fugitives in Ephraim, living in the territories of Ephraim and
Manasseh.”
And the angel of the LORD said unto
Manoah, Of
all that I said unto the woman let her
beware.
So the angel of the LORD answered
Manoah, “Your wife is to do everything I told her.
She may not eat of any thing that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing: all that I commanded her let her observe.
She must not eat anything that comes from the vine, nor drink any wine or strong drink, nor eat anything unclean. She must do everything I have commanded her.”
But his wife said unto him, If the LORD were pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burnt offering and a meat offering at our hands, neither would he have shewed us all these things, nor would as at this time have told us such things as these.
But his wife replied, “If the LORD had intended to kill us, He would not have accepted the burnt offering and the grain offering from our hands, nor would He have shown us all these things or spoken to us this way.”
Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among
all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the
uncircumcised Philistines? And
Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well.
But his father and mother replied, “Can’t you find a young woman among your relatives or among any of our people? Must you go to the
uncircumcised Philistines to get a wife?” But
Samson told his father, “Get her for me, for she is pleasing to my eyes.”
And it was told the Gazites, saying,
Samson is come
hither. And they compassed him in, and laid wait for him
all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet
all the night, saying, In the morning, when it is day, we shall kill him.
When the Gazites heard that
Samson was there, they surrounded that place and lay in wait for him
all night at the city gate. They were quiet throughout the night, saying, “Let us wait until
dawn; then we will kill him.”
And
Samson lay till
midnight, and arose at
midnight, and took the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and went away with them, bar and
all, and put them upon his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of an hill that is before
Hebron.
But
Samson lay there only until
midnight, when he got up, took hold of the doors of the city gate and both gateposts, and pulled them out, bar and
all. Then he put them on his shoulders and took them to the top of the mountain overlooking
Hebron.
And
Delilah said unto
Samson, Hitherto thou hast
mocked me, and told me lies: tell me
wherewith thou mightest be bound. And he said unto her, If thou weavest the seven locks of my head with the web.
Then
Delilah said to
Samson, “You have
mocked me and
lied to me
all along! Tell me how you can be
tied up.” He told her, “If you
weave the seven braids of my head into the web of a
loom and
tighten it with a pin, I will become as weak as any other man.”
That he told her
all his heart, and said unto her. There hath not come a
razor upon mine head; for I have been a
Nazarite unto God from my mother’s
womb: if I be
shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.
Samson told her
all that was in his heart: “My hair has never been cut, because I have been a
Nazirite to God from my mother’s
womb. If I am
shaved, my strength will leave me, and I will become as weak as any other man.”
And when
Delilah saw that he had told her
all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath shewed me
all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand.
When
Delilah realized that he had revealed to her
all that was in his heart, she sent this message to the lords of the Philistines: “Come up once more, for he has revealed to me
all that is in his heart.” Then the lords of the Philistines came to her, bringing the money in their hands.
Now the house was full of men and women; and
all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were upon the roof about three thousand men and women, that
beheld while
Samson made
sport.
Now the temple was full of men and women;
all the lords of the Philistines were there, and about three thousand men and women were on the roof watching
Samson entertain them.
And
Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with
all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon
all the people that were therein. So the dead which he
slew at his death were more than they which he
slew in his life.
Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines.” Then he pushed with
all his might, and the temple fell on the lords and
all the people in it. So in his death he killed more than he had killed in his life.
Then his brethren and
all the house of his father came down, and took him, and brought him up, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the buryingplace of
Manoah his father. And he judged Israel twenty years.
Then
Samson’s brothers and his father’s family came down, carried him back, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of his father
Manoah. And he had judged Israel twenty years.
In those days there was no king in Israel: and in those days the tribe of the Danites sought them an inheritance to dwell in; for unto that day all their inheritance had not fallen unto them among the tribes of Israel.
In those days there was no king in Israel, and the tribe of the Danites was looking for territory to occupy. For up to that time they had not come into an inheritance among the tribes of Israel.
Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were therein, how they dwelt careless, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure; and there was no magistrate in the land, that might put them to shame in any thing; and they were far from the Zidonians, and had no business with any man.
So the five men departed and came to Laish, where they saw that the people were living securely, like the Sidonians,
tranquil and
unsuspecting. There was nothing lacking in the land and no
oppressive ruler. And they were far away from the Sidonians and had no
alliance with
anyone.
And there was no deliverer, because it was far from Zidon, and they had no business with any man; and it was in the valley that lieth by Beth-rehob. And they built a city, and dwelt therein.
There was no one to deliver them, because the city was far from
Sidon and had no
alliance with
anyone; it was in a valley near Beth-rehob. And the Danites rebuilt the city and lived there.
And they set them up
Micah’s
graven image, which he made,
all the time that the house of God was in
Shiloh.
So they set up for themselves
Micah’s
graven image, and it was there the whole time the house of God was in
Shiloh.
And they sat down, and did eat and drink both of them together: for the
damsel’s father had said unto the man, Be content, I pray thee, and
tarry all night, and let thine heart be
merry.
So they sat down and the two of them
ate and
drank together. Then the
girl’s father said to the man, “Please agree to stay overnight and let your heart be
merry.”
And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his
concubine, and his servant, his father in law, the
damsel’s father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you
tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end,
lodge here, that thine heart may be
merry; and to
morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.
When the man got up to depart with his
concubine and his servant, his father-in-law, the
girl’s father, said to him, “Look, the day is drawing to a close. Please
spend the night. See, the day is almost over.
Spend the night here, that your heart may be
merry. Then you can get up early
tomorrow for your journey home.”
And he said unto his servant, Come, and let us draw near to one of these places to
lodge all night, in Gibeah, or in
Ramah.
He continued, “Come, let us try to reach one of these towns to
spend the night in Gibeah or
Ramah.”
And the old man said, Peace be with thee;
howsoever let
all thy wants lie upon me; only
lodge not in the street.
“Peace to you,” said the old man. “Let me supply everything you need. Only do not
spend the night in the square.”
And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them,
Nay, my brethren,
nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly.
The owner of the house went out and said to them, “No, my brothers, do not do this wicked thing! After
all, this man is a
guest in my house. Do not commit this
outrage.
But the men would not
hearken to him: so the man took his
concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and
abused her
all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.
But the men would not
listen to him. So the
Levite took his
concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and
abused her throughout the night, and at
dawn they let her go.
And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his
concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into
all the coasts of Israel.
When he reached his house, he
picked up a knife, took hold of his
concubine, cut her limb by limb into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout the territory of Israel.
And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds.
And
everyone who saw it said, “Nothing like this has been seen or done from the day the Israelites came out of the land of Egypt until this day. Think it over, take counsel, and speak up!”
Then
all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was gathered together as one man, from
Dan even to Beer-
sheba, with the land of
Gilead, unto the LORD in Mizpeh.
Then
all the Israelites from
Dan to
Beersheba and from the land of
Gilead came out, and the congregation assembled as one man before the LORD at
Mizpah.
And the chief of
all the people, even of
all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand
footmen that drew sword.
The leaders of all the people and all the tribes of Israel presented themselves in the assembly of God’s people: 400,000 men on foot, armed with swords.
And I took my
concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout
all the country of the inheritance of Israel: for they have committed
lewdness and folly in Israel.
Then I took my
concubine, cut her into pieces, and sent her throughout the land of Israel’s inheritance, because they had committed a
lewd and disgraceful act in Israel.
Behold, ye are all children of Israel; give here your advice and counsel.
Behold,
all you Israelites, give your advice and
verdict here and now.”
And all the people arose as one man, saying, We will not any of us go to his tent, neither will we any of us turn into his house.
Then all the people stood as one man and said, “Not one of us will return to his tent or to his house.
And we will take ten men of an hundred throughout
all the tribes of Israel, and an hundred of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to
fetch victual for the people, that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to
all the folly that they have wrought in Israel.
We will take ten men out of every hundred from
all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred out of every thousand, and a thousand out of every ten thousand, to supply provisions for the army when they go to Gibeah in Benjamin to
punish them for the
atrocity they have committed in Israel.”
So
all the men of Israel were gathered against the city,
knit together as one man.
So all the men of Israel gathered as one man, united against the city.
And the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, What wickedness is this that is done among you?
And the tribes of Israel sent men throughout the tribe of Benjamin, saying, “What is this wickedness that has occurred among you?
Among
all this people there were seven hundred chosen men lefthanded; every one could
sling stones at an hair breadth, and not miss.
Among
all these soldiers there were 700 select left-handers, each of whom could
sling a stone at a hair without missing.
And the men of Israel, beside Benjamin, were numbered four hundred thousand men that drew sword: all these were men of war.
And Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the sword.
That same day the Benjamites came out against them from Gibeah and cut down another 18,000 Israelites, all of them armed with swords.
Then
all the children of Israel, and
all the people, went up, and came unto the house of God, and
wept, and sat there before the LORD, and fasted that day until even, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.
Then the Israelites,
all the people, went up to
Bethel, where they sat
weeping before the LORD. That day they fasted until evening and presented burnt offerings and peace offerings to the LORD.
And
all the men of Israel rose up out of their place, and put themselves in
array at
Baal-tamar: and the liers in wait of Israel came forth out of their places, even out of the meadows of Gibeah.
So
all the men of Israel got up from their places and
arrayed themselves at
Baal-tamar, and the Israelites in
ambush charged from their positions west of Gibeah.
And there came against Gibeah ten thousand chosen men out of
all Israel, and the battle was
sore: but they knew not that evil was near them.
Then 10,000 select men from
all Israel made a
frontal assault against Gibeah, and the battle was fierce. But the Benjamites did not
realize that
disaster was upon them.
And the LORD
smote Benjamin before Israel: and the children of Israel destroyed of the Benjamites that day twenty and five thousand and an hundred men:
all these drew the sword.
The LORD defeated Benjamin in the presence of Israel, and on that day the Israelites slaughtered 25,100 Benjamites, all armed with swords.
And the liers in wait hasted, and
rushed upon Gibeah; and the liers in wait drew themselves along, and
smote all the city with the edge of the sword.
The men in
ambush rushed suddenly against Gibeah; they advanced and put the whole city to the sword.
And there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men; all these were men of valour.
And 18,000 Benjamites fell,
all men of
valor.
So that all which fell that day of Benjamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the sword; all these were men of valour.
And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and
smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of every city, as the beast, and
all that came to hand: also they set on fire
all the cities that they came to.
And the men of Israel turned back against the other Benjamites and put to the sword all the cities, including the animals and everything else they found. And they burned down all the cities in their path.
And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation unto the LORD? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to the LORD to Mizpeh, saying, He shall surely be put to death.
The Israelites asked, “Who among
all the tribes of Israel did not come to the assembly before the LORD?” For they had taken a solemn oath that
anyone who failed to come up before the LORD at
Mizpah would surely be put to death.
And Benjamin came again at that time; and they gave them wives which they had saved alive of the women of
Jabesh-
gilead: and yet so they sufficed them not.
And at that time the Benjamites returned and were given the women who were
spared from
Jabesh-
gilead. But there were not enough women for
all of them.
So they two went until they came to
Bethlehem. And it came to pass, when they were come to
Bethlehem, that
all the city was moved about them, and they said, Is this
Naomi?
I went out full, and the LORD hath brought me home again empty: why then call ye me
Naomi, seeing the LORD hath
testified against me, and the
Almighty hath
afflicted me?
I went away full, but the LORD has brought me back empty. Why call me
Naomi? After
all, the LORD has
testified against me, and the
Almighty has
afflicted me.”
And Boaz answered and said unto her, It hath fully been shewed me,
all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of thine husband: and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy
nativity, and art come unto a people which thou knewest not
heretofore.
Boaz replied, “I have been made fully aware of all you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband, how you left your father and mother and the land of your birth, and how you came to a people you did not know before.
And
Ruth the
Moabitess said, He said unto me also, Thou shalt keep fast by my young men, until they have ended
all my harvest.
Then
Ruth the
Moabitess said, “He also told me, ‘Stay with my young men until they have finished gathering
all my harvest.’”
And she said unto her, All that thou sayest unto me I will do.
“I will do everything you say,”
Ruth answered.
And she went down unto the floor, and did according to
all that her mother in law
bade her.
So she went down to the
threshing floor and did everything her mother-in-law had
instructed her to do.
And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee
all that thou requirest: for
all the city of my people
doth know that thou art a
virtuous woman.
And now do not be afraid, my daughter. I will do for you whatever you request, since all my fellow townspeople know that you are a woman of noble character.
And when she came to her mother in law, she said, Who art thou, my daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her.
When
Ruth returned to her mother-in-law,
Naomi asked her, “How did it go, my daughter?” Then
Ruth told her
all that Boaz had done for her.
Now this was the manner in former time in Israel concerning
redeeming and concerning changing, for to
confirm all things; a man
plucked off his
shoe, and gave it to his neighbour: and this was a testimony in Israel.
Now in former times in Israel, concerning the
redemption or exchange of property, to make any matter legally binding a man would remove his
sandal and give it to the other party, and this was a
confirmation in Israel.
And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto
all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought
all that was Elimelech’s, and
all that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s, of the hand of
Naomi.
At this, Boaz said to the elders and
all the people, “You are witnesses
today that I am
buying from
Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech, Chilion, and Mahlon.
And
all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The LORD make the woman that is come into thine house like
Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou
worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in
Bethlehem:
“We are witnesses,” said the elders and
all the people at the gate. “May the LORD make the woman entering your home like
Rachel and Leah, who together built up the house of Israel. May you be prosperous in Ephrathah and famous in
Bethlehem.
And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions:
And whenever the day came for Elkanah to present his sacrifice, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters.
And she
vowed a
vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou
wilt indeed look on the
affliction of thine
handmaid, and remember me, and not
forget thine
handmaid, but
wilt give unto thine
handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD
all the days of his life, and there shall no
razor come upon his head.
Count not thine
handmaid for a daughter of
Belial: for out of the abundance of my
complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.
Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; for
all this time I have been praying out of the depth of my
anguish and grief.”
And the man Elkanah, and
all his house, went up to offer unto the LORD the yearly sacrifice, and his
vow.
Then Elkanah and
all his house went up to make the annual sacrifice to the LORD and to
fulfill his
vow,
And he struck it into the pan, or
kettle, or
caldron, or pot;
all that the
fleshhook brought up the priest took for himself. So they did in
Shiloh unto
all the Israelites that came thither.
and
plunge it into the pan or
kettle or cauldron or
cooking pot. And the priest would claim for himself whatever the meat
fork brought up. This is how they treated
all the Israelites who came to
Shiloh.
