Then there arose certain of the
synagogue, which is called the
synagogue of the
Libertines,
and Cyrenians,
and Alexandrians,
and of them of
Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen.
But resistance arose from what was called the
Synagogue of the
Freedmen, including Cyrenians, Alexandrians,
and men from the provinces of
Cilicia and Asia. They began to
argue with Stephen,
And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.
but they could not stand up to his wisdom or the Spirit by whom he spoke.
Then they
suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak
blasphemous words against Moses,
and against God.
Then they
prompted some men to say, “We heard Stephen speak words of
blasphemy against Moses
and against God.”
And they
stirred up the people,
and the elders,
and the
scribes,
and came upon him,
and caught him,
and brought him to the council,
And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak
blasphemous words against this holy place,
and the law:
where they presented false witnesses who said, “This man never stops speaking against this holy place and against the law.
For we have heard him say, that this Jesus of
Nazareth shall destroy this place,
and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us.
For we have heard him say that Jesus of
Nazareth will destroy this place
and change the customs that Moses handed down to us.”
And all that sat in the council, looking
stedfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel.
All who were sitting in the
Sanhedrin looked intently at Stephen,
and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel.
And he said, Men, brethren,
and fathers,
hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in
Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,
And Stephen declared: “Brothers
and fathers,
listen to me! The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham while he was still in
Mesopotamia, before he lived in
Haran,
And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country,
and from thy kindred,
and come into the land which I shall
shew thee.
and told him, ‘Leave your country and your kindred and go to the land I will show you.’
Then came he out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell.
So Abraham left the land of the Chaldeans
and settled in
Haran. After his father died, God brought him out of that place
and into this land where you are now living.
And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.
He gave him no inheritance here, not even a foot of ground. But God promised to give possession of the land to Abraham and his descendants, even though he did not yet have a child.
And God spake on this wise, That his seed should
sojourn in a strange land;
and that they should bring them into
bondage,
and entreat them evil four hundred years.
God told him that his descendants would be foreigners in a strange land,
and that they would be
enslaved and mistreated four hundred years.
And the nation to whom they shall be in
bondage will I judge, said God:
and after that shall they come forth,
and serve me in this place.
‘But I will
punish the nation that enslaves them,’ God said, ‘
and afterward they will come forth
and worship Me in this place.’
Then God gave Abraham the covenant of
circumcision,
and Abraham became the father of Isaac
and circumcised him on the eighth day.
And Isaac became the father of Jacob,
and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.
And the patriarchs, moved with
envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him,
Because the patriarchs were
jealous of Joseph, they sold him as a slave into Egypt. But God was with him
And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.
and rescued him from all his troubles. He granted Joseph favor
and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt, who appointed him ruler over Egypt
and all his household.
Then famine
and great suffering swept across Egypt
and Canaan,
and our fathers could not find food.
And at the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph’s kindred was made known unto Pharaoh.
On their second visit, Joseph revealed his identity to his brothers, and his family became known to Pharaoh.
Then sent Joseph,
and called his father Jacob to him,
and all his kindred,
threescore and fifteen souls.
Then Joseph sent for his father Jacob and all his relatives, seventy-five in all.
So Jacob went down into Egypt, and died, he, and our fathers,
So Jacob went down to Egypt, where he and our fathers died.
And were carried over into Sychem,
and laid in the
sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem.
Their bones were carried back to
Shechem and placed in the tomb that Abraham had bought from the sons of Hamor at
Shechem for a price he paid in silver.
But when the time of the promise drew
nigh, which God had
sworn to Abraham, the people grew
and multiplied in Egypt,
As the time drew near for God to
fulfill His promise to Abraham, our people in Egypt increased greatly in number.
The same dealt
subtilly with our kindred,
and evil
entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live.
He exploited our people
and oppressed our fathers, forcing them to
abandon their infants so they would die.
In which time Moses was born,
and was exceeding fair,
and nourished up in his father’s house three months:
At that time Moses was born,
and he was beautiful in the sight of God. For three months he was
nurtured in his father’s house.
And when he was cast out, Pharaoh’s daughter took him up,
and nourished him for her own son.
When he was set outside, Pharaoh’s daughter took him and brought him up as her own son.
And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.
So Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in speech and action.
And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.
When Moses was forty years old, he decided to visit his brothers, the children of Israel.
And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him,
and avenged him that was
oppressed,
and smote the Egyptian:
And when he saw one of them being mistreated, Moses went to his
defense and avenged him by striking down the Egyptian who was
oppressing him.
And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they
strove,
and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?
The next day he came upon two Israelites who were fighting,
and he tried to
reconcile them, saying, ‘Men, you are brothers. Why are you mistreating each other?’
But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?
But the man who was
abusing his
neighbor pushed Moses aside
and said, ‘Who made you ruler
and judge over us?
Then fled Moses at this saying,
and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he
begat two sons.
At this remark, Moses fled to the land of
Midian, where he lived as a foreigner
and had two sons.
And when forty years were
expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a
bush.
After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning
bush in the desert near Mount
Sinai.
When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the Lord came unto him,
When Moses saw it, he
marveled at the sight. As he approached to look more closely, the voice of the Lord came to him:
Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham,
and the God of Isaac,
and the God of Jacob. Then Moses
trembled,
and durst not behold.
‘I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac,
and Jacob.’ Moses
trembled with fear
and did not
dare to look.
I have seen, I have seen the
affliction of my people which is in Egypt,
and I have heard their
groaning,
and am come down to deliver them.
And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.
I have indeed seen the oppression of My people in Egypt. I have heard their
groaning and have come down to deliver them. Now come, I will send you back to Egypt.’
This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler
and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler
and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the
bush.
This Moses, whom they had rejected with the words, ‘Who made you ruler
and judge?’ is the one whom God sent to be their ruler
and redeemer through the angel who appeared to him in the
bush.
He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.
He led them out and performed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, at the Red Sea, and for forty years in the wilderness.
This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:
He was in the assembly in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him on Mount
Sinai,
and with our fathers.
And he received living words to pass on to us.
To whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt,
But our fathers refused to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.
And they made a
calf in those days,
and offered sacrifice unto the
idol,
and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.
At that time they made a
calf and offered a sacrifice to the
idol,
rejoicing in the works of their hands.
Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?
But God turned away from them and gave them over to the worship of the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: ‘Did you bring Me sacrifices and offerings forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of
Moloch,
and the star of your god
Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them:
and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.
You have taken along the tabernacle of
Molech and the star of your god Rephan, the idols you made to worship. Therefore I will send you into exile beyond Babylon.’
Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God
drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David;
And our fathers who received it brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations God drove out before them. It remained until the time of David,
Who found favour before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.
who found favor in the sight of God and asked to provide a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.
Heaven is my throne,
and earth is my
footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?
‘Heaven is My throne
and the earth is My
footstool. What kind of house will you build for Me, says the Lord, or where will My place of
repose be?
Ye stiffnecked
and uncircumcised in heart
and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.
You stiff-necked people with
uncircumcised hearts
and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit, just as your fathers did.
Which of the prophets have not your fathers
persecuted?
and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers
and murderers:
Which of the prophets did your fathers fail to
persecute? They even killed those who
foretold the coming of the Righteous One.
And now you are His betrayers
and murderers—
Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.
you who received the law ordained by angels, yet have not kept it.”
When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart,
and they
gnashed on him with their teeth.
But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up
stedfastly into heaven,
and saw the glory of God,
and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,
But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked intently into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.
And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.
“Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”
Then they
cried out with a loud voice,
and stopped their ears,
and ran upon him with one
accord,
At this they covered their ears,
cried out in a loud voice,
and rushed together at him.
And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man’s feet, whose name was Saul.
They
dragged him out of the city
and began to stone him. Meanwhile the witnesses laid their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.
And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
While they were stoning him, Stephen appealed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”
And he
kneeled down,
and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge.
And when he had said this, he fell
asleep.
Falling on his knees, he
cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.”
And when he had said this, he fell
asleep.
And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.
And Saul was there, giving
approval to Stephen’s death. On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem,
and all except the apostles were scattered throughout
Judea and Samaria.
God-fearing men buried Stephen
and mourned deeply over him.
As for Saul, he made
havock of the church, entering into every house,
and haling men
and women committed them to prison.
But Saul began to destroy the church. Going from house to house, he
dragged off men
and women
and put them in prison.
Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them.
Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Christ to them.
And the people with one
accord gave
heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing
and seeing the miracles which he did.
The crowds gave their undivided attention to Philip’s message and to the signs they saw him perform.
For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them:
and many taken with
palsies,
and that were
lame, were
healed.
With loud shrieks, unclean spirits came out of many who were possessed,
and many of the
paralyzed and lame were
healed.
And there was great joy in that city.
So there was great joy in that city.
But there was a certain man, called Simon, which
beforetime in the same city used
sorcery,
and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:
Prior to that time, a man named Simon had practiced
sorcery in the city
and astounded the people of Samaria. He claimed to be someone great,
To whom they all gave
heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God.
and all the people, from the least to the greatest,
heeded his words
and said, “This man is the divine power called the Great Power.”
And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had
bewitched them with
sorceries.
They paid close attention to him because he had
astounded them for a long time with his
sorcery.
But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God,
and the name of Jesus Christ, they were
baptized, both men
and women.
But when they believed Philip as he preached the gospel of the kingdom of God
and the name of Jesus Christ, they were
baptized, both men
and women.
Then Simon himself believed also:
and when he was
baptized, he continued with Philip,
and wondered, beholding the miracles
and signs which were done.
Even Simon himself believed
and was
baptized. He followed Philip closely
and was
astounded by the great signs
and miracles he observed.
Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them.
Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.
Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,
When Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money.
Repent therefore of this thy wickedness,
and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be
forgiven thee.
Repent, therefore, of your wickedness,
and pray to the Lord. Perhaps He will
forgive you for the intent of your heart.
For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity.
For I see that you are poisoned by bitterness
and captive to iniquity.”
Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me.
Then Simon answered, “Pray to the Lord for me, so that nothing you have said may happen to me.”
And they, when they had
testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem,
and preached the gospel in many villages of the
Samaritans.
And after Peter
and John had
testified and spoken the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many of the
Samaritan villages.
And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise,
and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto
Gaza, which is desert.
Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Get up
and go south to the desert road that goes down from Jerusalem to
Gaza.”
And he arose
and went:
and, behold, a man of
Ethiopia, an
eunuch of great authority under
Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her
treasure,
and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,
So he started out,
and on his way he met an
Ethiopian eunuch, a court official in charge of the entire treasury of
Candace, queen of the Ethiopians. He had gone to Jerusalem to worship,
Was returning,
and sitting in his
chariot read Esaias the prophet.
and on his return was sitting in his
chariot reading Isaiah the prophet.
Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near,
and join
thyself to this
chariot.
The Spirit said to Philip, “Go over to that
chariot and stay by it.”
And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?
So Philip ran up and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked.
And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.
“How can I,” he said, “unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.
The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter;
and like a lamb
dumb before his
shearer, so opened he not his mouth:
The
eunuch was reading this passage of Scripture: “He was led like a sheep to the slaughter,
and as a lamb before the
shearer is silent, so He did not open His mouth.
In his
humiliation his judgment was taken away:
and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.
In His
humiliation He was deprived of justice. Who can recount His descendants? For His life was removed from the earth.”
And the
eunuch answered Philip,
and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?
“Tell me,” said the
eunuch, “who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?”
Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
Then Philip began with this very Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.
And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water:
and the
eunuch said, See, here is water; what
doth hinder me to be
baptized?
As they traveled along the road
and came to some water, the
eunuch said, “Look, here is water! What is there to prevent me from being
baptized?”
And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
And he commanded the
chariot to stand still:
and they went down both into the water, both Philip
and the
eunuch;
and he
baptized him.
And he gave orders to stop the
chariot. Then both Philip
and the
eunuch went down into the water,
and Philip
baptized him.
And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the
eunuch saw him no more:
and he went on his way
rejoicing.
When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away,
and the
eunuch saw him no more, but went on his way
rejoicing.
But Philip was found at
Azotus:
and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Caesarea.
But Philip appeared at
Azotus and traveled through that region, preaching the gospel in all the towns until he came to Caesarea.
And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,
Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out
murderous threats against the disciples of the Lord. He approached the high priest
And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.
and requested letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any men or women belonging to the Way, he could bring them as prisoners to Jerusalem.
And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus:
and suddenly there
shined round about him a light from heaven:
As Saul drew near to Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven
flashed around him.
And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?
He fell to the ground
and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you
persecute Me?”
And he said, Who art thou, Lord?
And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to
kick against the pricks.
“Who are You, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are
persecuting,” He replied.
And he
trembling and astonished said, Lord, what
wilt thou have me to do?
And the Lord said unto him, Arise,
and go into the city,
and it shall be told thee what thou must do.
“Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”
And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man.
The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless. They heard the voice but did not see
anyone.
And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man: but they led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus.
Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could not see a thing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus.
And he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink.
For three days he was without sight, and he did not eat or drink anything.
And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named
Ananias;
and to him said the Lord in a vision,
Ananias.
And he said, Behold, I am here, Lord.
In Damascus there was a disciple named
Ananias. The Lord spoke to him in a vision, “
Ananias!” “Here I am, Lord,” he answered.
And the Lord said unto him, Arise,
and go into the street which is called Straight,
and enquire in the house of
Judas for one called Saul, of
Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth,
“Get up!” the Lord told him. “Go to the house of
Judas on Straight Street
and ask for a man from
Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying.
