If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.
If others have this right to your support, shouldn’t we have it all the more? But we did not exercise this right. Instead, we put up with anything rather than hinder the gospel of Christ.
But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be so done unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make my glorying void.
But I have not used
any of these rights. And I am not writing this to suggest that something be done for me. Indeed, I would rather die than let
anyone nullify my
boast.
For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.
Though I am free of obligation to
anyone, I make myself a slave to
everyone, to
win as many as possible.
But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by
any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a
castaway.
No, I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.
What say I then? that the
idol is
any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is
any thing?
Am I suggesting, then, that food sacrificed to an
idol is
anything, or that an
idol is
anything?
Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience,
If
any of them that believe not
bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go;
whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.
If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat anything set before you without raising questions of conscience.
But if
any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord’s, and the
fulness thereof:
But if someone tells you, “This food was offered to idols,” then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience—
But if
any man seem to be
contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.
If
anyone is inclined to dispute this, we have no other practice, nor do the churches of God.
For
anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.
And if
any man hunger, let him eat at home; that ye come not together unto
condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come.
If
anyone is
hungry, he should eat at home, so that when you come together it will not result in judgment. And when I come, I will give instructions about the remaining matters.
If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?
If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body.
And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?
And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body.
And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or
harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or
harped?
Even in the case of lifeless instruments, such as the
flute or
harp, how will
anyone recognize the
tune they are playing unless the notes are distinct?
So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.
So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will
anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air.
If
any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one
interpret.
If
anyone speaks in a tongue, two, or at most three, should speak in turn, and someone must
interpret.
If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.
And if a revelation comes to someone who is seated, the first speaker should stop.
And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
If they wish to inquire about something, they are to ask their own husbands at home; for it is dishonorable for a woman to speak in the church.
If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.
If
anyone considers himself a prophet or spiritual person, let him acknowledge that what I am writing you is the Lord’s command.
But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.
If
anyone does not love the Lord, let him be under a
curse. Come, O Lord!
Who comforteth us in all our
tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in
any trouble, by the comfort
wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.
For we write none other things unto you, than what ye read or acknowledge; and I trust ye shall acknowledge even to the end;
For we do not write you anything that is beyond your ability to read and understand. And I hope that you will understand us completely,
But if
any have caused grief, he hath not
grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all.
Now if
anyone has caused grief, he has not
grieved me but all of you—to some degree, not to overstate it.
Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think
any thing as of ourselves; but our
sufficiency is of God;
Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim that
anything comes from us, but our
competence comes from God.
Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the
vail shall be taken away.
But whenever
anyone turns to the Lord, the
veil is taken away.
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
Therefore if
anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come!
Giving no offence in
any thing, that the ministry be not
blamed:
We put no
obstacle in
anyone’s way, so that no one can discredit our ministry.
Now I
rejoice, not that ye were made
sorry, but that ye sorrowed to
repentance: for ye were made
sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.
And now I
rejoice, not because you were made sorrowful, but because your sorrow led you to
repentance. For you felt the sorrow that God had intended, and so were not
harmed in
any way by us.
For if I have
boasted any thing to him of you, I am not
ashamed; but as we spake all things to you in truth, even so our
boasting, which I made before
Titus, is found a truth.
Indeed, I was not
embarrassed by
anything I had
boasted to him about you. But just as everything we said to you was true, so our
boasting to
Titus has proved to be true as well.
Avoiding this, that no man should
blame us in this abundance which is administered by us:
We hope to avoid
any criticism of the way we
administer this generous gift.
Whether
any do
enquire of
Titus, he is my
partner and fellowhelper concerning you: or our brethren be enquired of, they are the messengers of the churches, and the glory of Christ.
As for
Titus, he is my
partner and fellow worker among you. As for our brothers, they are messengers of the churches, to the glory of Christ.
Otherwise, if
any Macedonians come with me and find you unprepared, we—to say nothing of you—would be
ashamed of having been so
confident.
Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ’s, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ’s, even so are we Christ’s.
You are looking at outward appearances. If
anyone is
confident that he belongs to Christ, he should remind himself that we belong to Christ just as much as he does.
But I fear, lest by
any means, as the serpent
beguiled Eve through his
subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
I am afraid, however, that just as
Eve was
deceived by the serpent’s
cunning, your minds may be led
astray from your simple and pure devotion to Christ.
And when I was present with you, and wanted, I was chargeable to no man: for that which was lacking to me the brethren which came from
Macedonia supplied: and in all things I have kept myself from being
burdensome unto you, and so will I keep myself.
And when I was with you and in need, I was not a burden to
anyone; for the brothers who came from
Macedonia supplied my needs. I have
refrained from being a burden to you in
any way, and I will continue to do so.
For ye suffer, if a man bring you into
bondage, if a man
devour you, if a man take of you, if a man
exalt himself, if a man
smite you on the face.
In fact, you even put up with
anyone who enslaves you or exploits you or takes advantage of you or exalts himself or strikes you in the face.
I speak as concerning reproach, as though we had been weak.
Howbeit whereinsoever
any is bold, (I speak
foolishly,) I am bold also.
For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a
fool; for I will say the truth: but now I
forbear, lest
any man should think of me above that which he
seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me.
Even if I wanted to
boast, I would not be a
fool, because I would be speaking the truth. But I
refrain, so no one will credit me with more than he sees in me or hears from me,
Did I make a gain of you by any of them whom I sent unto you?
I desired
Titus, and with him I sent a brother. Did
Titus make a gain of you? walked we not in the same spirit? walked we not in the same steps?
I urged
Titus to visit you, and I sent our brother with him. Did
Titus exploit you in
any way? Did we not walk in the same Spirit and follow in the same footsteps?
I told you before, and
foretell you, as if I were present, the second time; and being absent now I write to them which
heretofore have
sinned, and to all other, that, if I come again, I will not
spare:
Now I pray to God that ye do no evil; not that we should appear approved, but that ye should do that which is
honest, though we be as reprobates.
Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong—not that we will appear to have stood the test, but that you will do what is right, even if we appear to have failed.
For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth.
For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth.
But though we, or an angel from heaven,
preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be
accursed.
But even if we or an angel from heaven should
preach a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be under a
curse!
As we said before, so say I now again, If
any man
preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be
accursed.
As we have said before, so now I say again: If
anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be under a
curse!
For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.
I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.
And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that gospel which I
preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by
any means I should run, or had run, in vain.
I went in
response to a revelation and set before them the gospel that I
preach among the Gentiles. But I spoke privately to those recognized as leaders, for fear that I was running or had already run in vain.
But it is good to be
zealously affected always in a good thing, and not only when I am present with you.
Nevertheless, it is good to be
zealous if it serves a noble purpose—at
any time, and not only when I am with you.
For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.
If
anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.
Not of works, lest
any man should
boast.
not by works, so that no one can
boast.
But among you, as is proper among the saints, there must not be even a
hint of sexual immorality, or of
any kind of impurity, or of
greed.
For this ye know, that no
whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor
covetous man, who is an
idolater, hath
any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure, or
greedy person (that is, an
idolater), has
any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or
wrinkle, or
any such thing; but that it should be holy and without
blemish.
Knowing that
whatsoever good thing
any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free.
because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free.
without being
frightened in
any way by those who
oppose you. This is a clear sign of their destruction but of your salvation, and it is from God.
Therefore if you have
any encouragement in Christ, if
any comfort from His love, if
any fellowship with the Spirit, if
any affection and
compassion,
Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If
any other man thinketh that he hath
whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more:
though I myself could have such confidence. If
anyone else thinks he has grounds for confidence in the flesh, I have more:
If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.
and so,
somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.
Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in
any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall
reveal even this unto you.
All of us who are
mature should embrace this point of view. And if you think differently about some issue, God will
reveal this to you as well.
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if
anything is excellent or
praiseworthy—think on these things.
I know both how to be
abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am
instructed both to be full and to be
hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.
I know how to live
humbly, and I know how to abound. I am accustomed to
any and every situation—to being filled and being
hungry, to having
plenty and having need.
I say this so that no one will
deceive you by smooth rhetoric.
Beware lest
any man
spoil you through philosophy and vain
deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
See to it that no one takes you
captive through philosophy and empty
deception, which are based on human tradition and the spiritual forces of the world rather than on Christ.
Do not let
anyone who delights in false
humility and the worship of angels
disqualify you with speculation about what he has seen. Such a person is
puffed up without basis by his unspiritual mind.
Which things have indeed a
shew of wisdom in will worship, and
humility, and neglecting of the body; not in
any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.
Such restrictions indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-prescribed worship, their false
humility, and their harsh treatment of the body; but they are of no value against the
indulgence of the flesh.
Forbearing one another, and
forgiving one another, if
any man have a quarrel against
any: even as Christ
forgave you, so also do ye.
For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in
Macedonia and
Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak
any thing.
For not only did the message of the Lord ring out from you to
Macedonia and
Achaia, but your faith in God has gone out to every place, so that we have no need to say
anything more.
As you know, we never used words of
flattery or
any pretext for
greed. God is our witness!
Nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might have been
burdensome, as the apostles of Christ.
Nor did we seek praise from you or from
anyone else, although as apostles of Christ we had authority to demand it.
For ye remember, brethren, our labour and
travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto
any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.
Surely you recall, brothers, our labor and
toil. We worked night and day so that we would not be a burden to
anyone while we proclaimed to you the gospel of God.
and no one should ever
violate or
exploit his brother in this regard, because the Lord will
avenge all such acts, as we have already told you and solemnly
warned you.
He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.
Anyone, then, who rejects this command does not
reject man but God, the very One who gives you His Holy Spirit.
But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye
yourselves are taught of God to love one another.
Now about brotherly love, you do not need
anyone to write to you, because you
yourselves have been taught by God to love one another.
That ye may walk
honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.
Then you will
behave properly toward outsiders, without being dependent on
anyone.
See that none render evil for evil unto
any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among
yourselves, and to all men.
Make sure that no one repays evil for evil. Always pursue what is good for one another and for all people.
That ye be not soon
shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
not to be easily
disconcerted or
alarmed by
any spirit or message or letter seeming to be from us,
alleging that the Day of the Lord has already come.
Let no man
deceive you by
any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of
perdition;
Let no one
deceive you in
any way, for it will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of
lawlessness—the son of destruction—is revealed.
Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw
yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.
Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from any brother who leads an undisciplined life that is not in keeping with the tradition you received from us.
Neither did we eat
any man’s bread for
nought; but wrought with labour and
travail night and day, that we might not be chargeable to
any of you:
nor did we eat
anyone’s food without paying for it. Instead, in labor and
toil, we worked night and day so that we would not be a burden to
any of you.
For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.
For even while we were with you, we gave you this command: “If
anyone is unwilling to work, he shall not eat.”
And if
any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be
ashamed.
Take note of
anyone who does not obey the instructions we have given in this letter. Do not associate with him, so that he may be
ashamed.
For whoremongers, for them that
defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for
perjured persons, and if there be
any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;
for the sexually immoral, for homosexuals, for slave traders and liars and perjurers, and for
anyone else who is
averse to sound teaching
Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and
verity.
For this reason I was appointed as a preacher, an apostle, and a faithful and true teacher of the Gentiles. I am telling the truth; I am not lying about anything.
This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.
But if
any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to
shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.
But if a widow has children or grandchildren, they must first learn to show
godliness to their own family and repay their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God.
But if
any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an
infidel.
If
anyone does not provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
If
any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them
relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it may
relieve them that are widows indeed.
If any believing woman has dependent widows, she must assist them and not allow the church to be burdened, so that it can help the widows who are truly in need.
If
any man teach otherwise, and consent not to
wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to
godliness;
If
anyone teaches another doctrine and disagrees with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and with godly teaching,
For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
For we brought nothing into the world, so we cannot carry anything out of it.
Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power
everlasting.
Amen.
He alone is
immortal and dwells in unapproachable light. No one has ever seen Him, nor can
anyone see Him. To Him be honor and eternal dominion!
Amen.
If a man therefore
purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour,
sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.
So if
anyone cleanses himself of what is unfit, he will be a vessel for honor:
sanctified, useful to the Master, and prepared for every good work.
If
any be
blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of
riot or
unruly.
Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be
ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.
and
wholesome speech that is above reproach, so that
anyone who opposes us will be
ashamed, having nothing bad to say about us.
But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly.
But I did not want to do
anything without your consent, so that your goodness will not be out of
compulsion, but by your own free will.
If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account;
But if he has wronged you in any way or owes you anything, charge it to my account.
