And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’
And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as
thyself. There is none other
commandment greater than these.
The second is this: ‘Love your
neighbor as
yourself.’ No other
commandment is greater than these.”
For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.
It is like a man going on a journey who left his house, put each servant in charge of his own task, and
instructed the
doorkeeper to keep watch.
And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the
commandments and ordinances of the Lord
blameless.
Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, walking
blamelessly in all the
commandments and decrees of the Lord.
And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.
The devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”
For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:
For it is written: ‘He will command His angels concerning You to guard You carefully;
And they were all
amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he
commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.
All the people were overcome with
amazement and asked one another, “What is this message? With authority and power He
commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!”
And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and
shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy
cleansing, according as Moses
commanded, for a testimony unto them.
“Do not tell
anyone,” Jesus
instructed him. “But go, show
yourself to the priest and present the offering Moses prescribed for your
cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him.
“Where is your faith?” He asked.
Frightened and
amazed, they asked one another, “Who is this? He
commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him!”
(For he had
commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For
oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in
fetters; and he
brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.)
For Jesus had
commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was bound with chains and
shackles, he had broken the chains and been driven by the
demon into solitary places.
And they
besought him that he would not
command them to go out into the deep.
And the demons kept
begging Jesus not to order them to go into the
Abyss.
And her spirit came again, and she arose
straightway: and he
commanded to give her meat.
Her spirit returned, and at once she got up. And He directed that she be given something to eat.
And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;
And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord,
wilt thou that we
command fire to come down from heaven, and
consume them, even as Elias did?
When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do You want us to call down fire from heaven to
consume them?”
And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.
‘Sir,’ the servant replied, ‘what you ordered has been done, and there is still room.’
And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither
transgressed I at any time thy
commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a
kid, that I might make
merry with my friends:
But he answered his father, ‘Look, all these years I have served you and never disobeyed a
commandment of yours. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could
celebrate with my friends.
Doth he
thank that servant because he did the things that were
commanded him? I
trow not.
Does he
thank the servant because he did what he was told?
So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.
So you also, when you have done everything commanded of you, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’”
Thou knowest the
commandments, Do not commit
adultery, Do not kill, Do not
steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother.
You know the
commandments: ‘Do not commit
adultery, do not murder, do not
steal, do not bear false witness, honor your father and mother.’”
And Jesus stood, and commanded him to be brought unto him: and when he was come near, he asked him,
Jesus stopped and directed that the man be brought to Him. When he had been brought near, Jesus asked him,
And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.
When he returned from
procuring his
kingship, he summoned the servants to whom he had given the money, to find out what each one had
earned.
And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.
Then they returned to prepare spices and perfumes. And they rested on the Sabbath, according to the commandment.
Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?
In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such a woman. So what do You say?”
No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.
No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of My own
accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from My Father.”
Now both the chief priests and the
Pharisees had given a
commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should
shew it, that they might take him.
But the chief priests and
Pharisees had given orders that
anyone who knew where He was must report it, so that they could arrest Him.
For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.
I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me has commanded Me what to say and how to say it.
And I know that his
commandment is life
everlasting:
whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.
And I know that His command leads to eternal life. So I speak exactly what the Father has told Me to say.”
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you also must love one another.
If ye love me, keep my commandments.
If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
Whoever has My
commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me. The one who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and
reveal Myself to him.”
But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.
But I do exactly what the Father has commanded Me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Get up! Let us go on from here.
If ye keep my
commandments, ye shall
abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s
commandments, and
abide in his love.
If you keep My commandments, you will remain in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and remain in His love.
This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
Ye are my friends, if ye do
whatsoever I
command you.
You are My friends if you do what I command you.
These things I command you, that ye love one another.
This is My command to you: Love one another.
Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,
Then the band of soldiers, with its commander and the officers of the Jews, arrested Jesus and bound Him.
Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:
until the day He was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles He had chosen.
And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
And while they were gathered together, He
commanded them: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift the Father promised, which you have heard Me
discuss.
But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves,
So they ordered them to leave the
Sanhedrin and then conferred together.
And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.
Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.
“We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,” he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us responsible for this man’s blood.”
Then stood there up one in the council, a
Pharisee, named
Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in reputation among all the people, and
commanded to put the apostles forth a little space;
But a
Pharisee named
Gamaliel, a teacher of the law who was honored by all the people, stood up in the
Sanhedrin and ordered that the men be put outside for a short time.
And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
At this, they yielded to
Gamaliel. They called the apostles in and had them
flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and released them.
And he
commanded the
chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the
eunuch; and he
baptized him.
And he gave orders to stop the
chariot. Then both Philip and the
eunuch went down into the water, and Philip
baptized him.
Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.
So I sent for you immediately, and you were kind enough to come. Now then, we are all here in the presence of God to
listen to everything the Lord has
instructed you to tell us.”
And he
commanded us to
preach unto the people, and to
testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.
And He
commanded us to
preach to the people and to
testify that He is the One appointed by God to judge the living and the dead.
And he
commanded them to be
baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to
tarry certain days.
So he ordered that they be
baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay for a few days.
And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judaea to Caesarea, and there abode.
After Herod had searched for him unsuccessfully, he examined the guards and ordered that they be executed. Then he went down from
Judea to Caesarea and spent some time there.
For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.
For this is what the Lord has commanded us: ‘I have made you a light for the Gentiles, to bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’”
But there rose up certain of the sect of the
Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to
circumcise them, and to
command them to keep the law of Moses.
But some believers from the party of the
Pharisees stood up and declared, “The Gentiles must be
circumcised and required to obey the law of Moses.”
Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words,
subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be
circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such
commandment:
It has come to our attention that some went out from us without our
authorization and unsettled you, troubling your minds by what they said.
And this did she many days. But Paul, being
grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I
command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.
She continued this for many days. Eventually Paul grew so
aggravated that he turned and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I
command you to come out of her!” And the spirit left her at that very moment.
And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them.
The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and
Silas, and the magistrates ordered that they be
stripped and beaten with rods.
And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a
commandment unto
Silas and
Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.
Those who
escorted Paul brought him to Athens and then returned with instructions for
Silas and
Timothy to join him as soon as possible.
And the times of this ignorance God
winked at; but now
commandeth all men every where to
repent:
Although God overlooked the ignorance of earlier times, He now
commands all people everywhere to
repent.
And found a certain
Jew named
Aquila, born in
Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife
Priscilla; (because that
Claudius had
commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them.
There he found a
Jew named
Aquila, a native of
Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife
Priscilla because
Claudius had ordered all the Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to visit them,
And as they went about to kill him,
tidings came unto the chief captain of the band, that all Jerusalem was in an
uproar.
While they were trying to kill him, the
commander of the Roman regiment received a report that all Jerusalem was in
turmoil.
Who immediately took soldiers and centurions, and ran down unto them: and when they saw the chief captain and the soldiers, they left beating of Paul.
Immediately he took some soldiers and centurions and ran down to the crowd. When the people saw the commander and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.
Then the chief captain came near, and took him, and commanded him to be bound with two chains; and demanded who he was, and what he had done.
The commander came up and arrested Paul, ordering that he be bound with two chains. Then he asked who he was and what he had done.
And some
cried one thing, some another, among the multitude: and when he could not know the certainty for the
tumult, he
commanded him to be carried into the castle.
Some in the crowd were
shouting one thing, and some another. And since the
commander could not get at the truth because of the
uproar, he ordered that Paul be brought into the
barracks.
And as Paul was to be led into the castle, he said unto the chief captain, May I speak unto thee? Who said, Canst thou speak Greek?
As they were about to take Paul into the
barracks, he asked the
commander, “May I say something to you?” “Do you speak Greek?” he replied.
The chief captain
commanded him to be brought into the castle, and
bade that he should be examined by
scourging; that he might know wherefore they
cried so against him.
the
commander ordered that Paul be brought into the
barracks. He directed that Paul be
flogged and
interrogated to determine the reason for this outcry against him.
When the
centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take
heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman.
On hearing this, the
centurion went and reported it to the
commander. “What are you going to do?” he said. “This man is a Roman citizen.”
Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said,
Yea.
The
commander went to Paul and asked, “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?” “
Yes,” he answered.
And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born.
“I paid a high price for my
citizenship,” said the
commander. “But I was born a citizen,” Paul replied.
Then
straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.
Then those who were about to
interrogate Paul
stepped back, and the
commander himself was
alarmed when he realized that he had put a Roman citizen in chains.
On the
morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and
commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.
The next day the
commander, wanting to learn the real reason Paul was accused by the Jews, released him and ordered the chief priests and the whole
Sanhedrin to
assemble. Then he brought Paul down and had him stand before them.
And the high priest
Ananias commanded them that stood by him to
smite him on the mouth.
At this, the high priest
Ananias ordered those standing near Paul to strike him on the mouth.
Then said Paul unto him, God shall
smite thee, thou whited wall: for sittest thou to judge me after the law, and
commandest me to be
smitten contrary to the law?
Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you
whitewashed wall! You sit here to judge me according to the law, yet you
yourself violate the law by
commanding that I be struck.”
And when there arose a great
dissension, the chief captain, fearing lest Paul should have been pulled in pieces of them,
commanded the soldiers to go down, and to take him by force from among them, and to bring him into the castle.
The dispute grew so violent that the
commander was afraid they would
tear Paul to pieces. He ordered the soldiers to go down and remove him by force and bring him into the
barracks.
Now therefore ye with the council
signify to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you to
morrow, as though ye would
enquire something more perfectly concerning him: and we, or ever he come near, are ready to kill him.
Now then, you and the
Sanhedrin petition the
commander to bring him down to you on the pretext of examining his case more carefully. We are ready to kill him on the way.”
Then Paul called one of the centurions unto him, and said, Bring this young man unto the chief captain: for he hath a certain thing to tell him.
Then Paul called one of the centurions and said, “Take this young man to the commander; he has something to tell him.”
So he took him, and brought him to the chief captain, and said, Paul the prisoner called me unto him, and prayed me to bring this young man unto thee, who hath something to say unto thee.
So the
centurion took him to the
commander and said, “Paul the prisoner sent and asked me to bring this young man to you. He has something to tell you.”
Then the chief captain took him by the hand, and went with him aside privately, and asked him, What is that thou hast to tell me?
The commander took the young man by the hand, drew him aside, and asked, “What do you need to tell me?”
So the chief captain then let the young man depart, and charged him, See thou tell no man that thou hast shewed these things to me.
So the
commander dismissed the young man and
instructed him, “Do not tell
anyone that you have reported this to me.”
And when it was told me how that the Jews laid wait for the man, I sent
straightway to thee, and gave
commandment to his accusers also to say before thee what they had against him.
Farewell.
When I was informed that there was a plot against the man, I sent him to you at once. I also
instructed his accusers to present their case against him before you.
Then the soldiers, as it was
commanded them, took Paul, and brought him by night to
Antipatris.
So the soldiers followed their orders and brought Paul by night to
Antipatris.
I will hear thee, said he, when thine accusers are also come. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod’s judgment hall.
he said, “I will hear your case when your accusers arrive.” Then he ordered that Paul be kept under guard in Herod’s
Praetorium.
Commanding his accusers to come unto thee: by examining of whom
thyself mayest take knowledge of all these things,
whereof we
accuse him.
By examining him
yourself, you will be able to learn the truth about all our charges against him.”
And when
Felix heard these things, having more perfect knowledge of that way, he
deferred them, and said, When
Lysias the chief captain shall come down, I will know the
uttermost of your matter.
Then
Felix, who was well informed about the Way,
adjourned the hearing and said, “When
Lysias the
commander comes, I will decide your case.”
And he
commanded a
centurion to keep Paul, and to let him have liberty, and that he should
forbid none of his acquaintance to minister or come unto him.
He ordered the
centurion to keep Paul under guard, but to allow him some freedom and permit his friends to minister to his needs.
And when he had
tarried among them more than ten days, he went down unto Caesarea; and the next day sitting on the judgment seat
commanded Paul to be brought.
After
spending no more than eight or ten days with them,
Festus went down to Caesarea. The next day he sat on the judgment seat and ordered that Paul be brought in.
Therefore, when they were come
hither, without any delay on the
morrow I sat on the judgment seat, and
commanded the man to be brought forth.
So when they came here with me, I did not delay. The next day I sat on the judgment seat and ordered that the man be brought in.
But when Paul had appealed to be reserved unto the hearing of Augustus, I commanded him to be kept till I might send him to Caesar.
But when Paul appealed to be held over for the decision of the Emperor, I ordered that he be held until I could send him to Caesar.”
And on the
morrow, when
Agrippa was come, and
Bernice, with great
pomp, and was entered into the place of hearing, with the chief captains, and principal men of the city, at
Festus’
commandment Paul was brought forth.
The next day
Agrippa and
Bernice came with great
pomp and entered the
auditorium, along with the
commanders and leading men of the city. And
Festus ordered that Paul be brought in.
But the
centurion, willing to save Paul, kept them from their purpose; and
commanded that they which could
swim should cast themselves first into the sea, and get to land:
But sin, taking occasion by the
commandment, wrought in me all manner of
concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.
But sin, seizing its opportunity through the
commandment, produced in me every kind of
covetous desire. For apart from the law, sin is dead.
For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.
Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the
commandment came, sin
sprang to life and I died.
And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.
So I discovered that the very commandment that was meant to bring life actually brought death.
For sin, taking occasion by the
commandment,
deceived me, and by it
slew me.
For sin, seizing its opportunity through the
commandment,
deceived me and through the
commandment put me to death.
Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous, and good.
Was then that which is good made death unto me? God
forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the
commandment might become exceeding sinful.
Did that which is good, then, become death to me? Certainly not! But in order that sin might be exposed as sin, it produced death in me through what was good, so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful.
For this, Thou shalt not commit
adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not
steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not
covet; and if there be any other
commandment, it is briefly
comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as
thyself.
But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the
commandment of the
everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:
but now revealed and made known through the writings of the prophets by the command of the eternal God, in order to lead all nations to the obedience that comes from faith—
But I speak this by permission, and not of commandment.
And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband:
To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband.
Now concerning virgins I have no commandment of the Lord: yet I give my judgment, as one that hath obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful.
Now about virgins, I have no
command from the Lord, but I give a judgment as one who by the Lord’s mercy is
trustworthy.
Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.
Women are to be silent in the churches. They are not permitted to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says.
If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.
If
anyone considers himself a prophet or spiritual person, let him acknowledge that what I am writing you is the Lord’s
command.
