Moreover I will establish his kingdom for ever, if he be constant to do my commandments and my judgments, as at this day.
I will establish his kingdom
forever, if he
resolutely carries out My commandments and ordinances, as is being done this
day.’
The gold for things of gold, and the silver for things of silver, and for all manner of work to be made by the hands of artificers. And who then is willing to
consecrate his service this
day unto the LORD?
For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our
days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none
abiding.
For we are foreigners and strangers in Your presence, as were all our forefathers. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope.
And they sacrificed sacrifices unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings unto the LORD, on the
morrow after that
day, even a thousand bullocks, a thousand rams, and a thousand lambs, with their drink offerings, and sacrifices in abundance for all Israel:
The next day they offered sacrifices and presented burnt offerings to the LORD: a thousand bulls, a thousand rams, and a thousand lambs, along with their drink offerings, and other sacrifices in abundance for all Israel.
And did eat and drink before the LORD on that
day with great
gladness. And they made Solomon the son of David king the second time, and
anointed him unto the LORD to be the chief governor, and
Zadok to be priest.
That
day they
ate and
drank with great joy in the presence of the LORD. Then, for a second time, they designated David’s son Solomon as king,
anointing him before the LORD as ruler, and
Zadok as the priest.
And he died in a good old age, full of
days, riches, and honour: and Solomon his son reigned in his
stead.
He died at a ripe old age, full of years, riches, and honor, and his son Solomon reigned in his place.
And he began to build in the second day of the second month, in the fourth year of his reign.
Solomon began construction on the second day of the second month in the fourth year of his reign.
And they drew out the
staves of the ark, that the ends of the
staves were seen from the ark before the
oracle; but they were not seen without. And there it is unto this
day.
The poles of the ark extended far enough that their ends were visible from in front of the inner sanctuary, but not from outside the Holy Place; and they are there to this day.
Since the day that I brought forth my people out of the land of Egypt I chose no city among all the tribes of Israel to build an house in, that my name might be there; neither chose I any man to be a ruler over my people Israel:
‘Since the
day I brought My people out of the land of Egypt, I have not chosen a city from any tribe of Israel in which to build a house so that My Name would be there, nor have I chosen
anyone to be ruler over My people Israel.
Thou which hast kept with thy servant David my father that which thou hast promised him; and spakest with thy mouth, and hast fulfilled it with thine hand, as it is this day.
You have kept Your promise to Your servant, my father David. What You spoke with Your mouth You have fulfilled with Your hand this day.
That thine eyes may be open upon this house
day and night, upon the place
whereof thou hast said that thou wouldest put thy name there; to
hearken unto the prayer which thy servant prayeth toward this place.
May Your eyes be open toward this temple day and night, toward the place where You said You would put Your Name, so that You may hear the prayer that Your servant prays toward this place.
That they may fear thee, to walk in thy ways, so long as they live in the land which thou gavest unto our fathers.
so that they may fear You and walk in Your ways all the days they live in the land that You gave to our fathers.
Also at the same time Solomon kept the feast seven
days, and all Israel with him, a very great congregation, from the entering in of
Hamath unto the river of Egypt.
So at that time Solomon and all Israel with him—a very great assembly of people from Lebo-
hamath to the
Brook of Egypt—kept the feast for seven
days.
And in the eighth
day they made a solemn assembly: for they kept the
dedication of the altar seven
days, and the feast seven
days.
On the eighth
day they held a solemn assembly, for the
dedication of the altar had lasted seven
days, and the feast seven
days more.
And on the three and
twentieth day of the seventh month he sent the people away into their tents,
glad and
merry in heart for the goodness that the LORD had shewed unto David, and to Solomon, and to Israel his people.
On the twenty-third
day of the seventh month, Solomon sent the people away to their homes, joyful and
glad of heart for the good things that the LORD had done for David, for Solomon, and for His people Israel.
But of their children, who were left after them in the land, whom the children of Israel consumed not, them did Solomon make to pay tribute until this day.
their descendants who remained in the land, those whom the Israelites were unable to destroy—Solomon conscripted these people to be forced laborers, as they are to this day.
Even after a certain rate every
day, offering according to the commandment of Moses, on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the solemn feasts, three times in the year, even in the feast of
unleavened bread, and in the feast of weeks, and in the feast of tabernacles.
He observed the daily requirement for offerings according to the commandment of Moses for Sabbaths, New Moons, and the three annual appointed feasts—the Feast of
Unleavened Bread, the Feast of Weeks, and the Feast of Tabernacles.
And he appointed, according to the order of David his father, the courses of the priests to their service, and the Levites to their charges, to praise and minister before the priests, as the duty of every
day required: the
porters also by their courses at every gate: for so had David the man of God commanded.
In keeping with the ordinances of his father David, Solomon appointed the divisions of the priests over their service, and the Levites for their duties to offer praise and to minister before the priests according to the daily requirement. He also appointed gatekeepers by their divisions at each gate, for this had been the command of David, the man of God.
Now all the work of Solomon was prepared unto the day of the foundation of the house of the LORD, and until it was finished. So the house of the LORD was perfected.
Thus all the work of Solomon was carried out, from the day the foundation was laid for the house of the LORD until it was finished. So the house of the LORD was completed.
And all the drinking vessels of king Solomon were of gold, and all the vessels of the house of the forest of
Lebanon were of pure gold: none were of silver; it was not any thing accounted of in the
days of Solomon.
All King Solomon’s drinking cups were gold, and all the utensils of the House of the Forest of
Lebanon were pure gold. There was no silver, because it was accounted as nothing in the
days of Solomon.
And he said unto them, Come again unto me after three days. And the people departed.
Rehoboam answered, “Come back to me in three
days.” So the people departed.
So
Jeroboam and all the people came to
Rehoboam on the third
day, as the king
bade, saying, Come again to me on the third
day.
After three
days,
Jeroboam and all the people returned to
Rehoboam, since the king had said, “Come back to me on the third
day.”
And Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.
So to this day Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David.
Now the acts of
Rehoboam, from first to last, are they not written in the records of Shemaiah the Prophet and of
Iddo the
Seer concerning the
genealogies? There was war between
Rehoboam and
Jeroboam throughout their
days.
Neither did
Jeroboam recover strength again in the
days of
Abijah: and the LORD struck him, and he died.
Jeroboam did not again recover his power during the
days of
Abijah, and the LORD struck him down and he died.
So
Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David: and
Asa his son reigned in his
stead. In his
days the land was quiet ten years.
Then
Abijah rested with his fathers and was buried in the City of David. And his son
Asa reigned in his place, and in his
days the land was at peace for ten years.
And he built
fenced cities in Judah: for the land had rest, and he had no war in those years; because the LORD had given him rest.
Because the land was at peace,
Asa built fortified cities in Judah. In those
days no one made war with him, because the LORD had given him rest.
And in those times there was no peace to him that went out, nor to him that came in, but great vexations were upon all the inhabitants of the countries.
In those days there was no safety for travelers, because the residents of the lands had many conflicts.
But the high places were not taken away out of Israel: nevertheless the heart of
Asa was perfect all his
days.
The high places were not removed from Israel, but
Asa’s heart was fully devoted all his
days.
And
Jehoshaphat said unto the king of Israel,
Enquire, I pray thee, at the word of the LORD to
day.
But
Jehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel, “Please inquire first for the word of the LORD.”
And Micaiah said, Behold, thou shalt see on that
day when thou shalt go into an inner chamber to hide
thyself.
Micaiah replied, “You will soon see, on that day when you go and hide in an inner room.”
And the battle increased that
day:
howbeit the king of Israel stayed himself up in his
chariot against the Syrians until the even: and about the time of the sun going down he died.
The battle
raged throughout that
day, and the king of Israel
propped himself up in his
chariot facing the Arameans until evening. And at
sunset he died.
And when
Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away the
spoil of them, they found among them in abundance both riches with the dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they
stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were three
days in gathering of the
spoil, it was so much.
Then
Jehoshaphat and his people went to carry off the
plunder, and they found on the bodies an abundance of goods and valuables—more than they could carry away. They were gathering the
plunder for three
days because there was so much.
And on the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of Berachah; for there they blessed the LORD: therefore the name of the same place was called, The valley of Berachah, unto this day.
On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Beracah, where they blessed the LORD. Therefore that place is called the Valley of Beracah to this day.
In his days the Edomites revolted from under the dominion of Judah, and made themselves a king.
In the
days of Jehoram,
Edom rebelled against the hand of Judah and appointed their own king.
So the Edomites revolted from under the hand of Judah unto this
day. The same time also did
Libnah revolt from under his hand; because he had
forsaken the LORD God of his fathers.
So to this
day Edom has been in rebellion against the hand of Judah. Likewise,
Libnah rebelled against his rule at the same time, because Jehoram had
forsaken the LORD, the God of his fathers.
And thou shalt have great sickness by disease of thy
bowels, until thy
bowels fall out by reason of the sickness
day by
day.
And
day after
day you
yourself will suffer from a severe illness, a disease of your
bowels, until it causes your
bowels to come out.’”
And it came to pass, that in process of time, after the end of two years, his
bowels fell out by reason of his sickness: so he died of
sore diseases. And his people made no burning for him, like the burning of his fathers.
This continued day after day until two full years had passed. Finally, his intestines came out because of his disease, and he died in severe pain. And his people did not make a fire in his honor as they had done for his fathers.
And
Joash did that which was right in the sight of the LORD all the
days of Jehoiada the priest.
And
Joash did what was right in the eyes of the LORD all the
days of Jehoiada the priest.
Now it came to pass, that at what time the chest was brought unto the king’s office by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king’s
scribe and the high priest’s officer came and
emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to his place again. Thus they did
day by
day, and gathered money in abundance.
Whenever the chest was brought by the Levites to the king’s overseers and they saw that there was a large amount of money, the royal
scribe and the officer of the high priest would come and empty the chest and carry it back to its place. They did this daily and gathered the money in abundance.
And when they had finished it, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada,
whereof were made vessels for the house of the LORD, even vessels to minister, and to offer
withal, and spoons, and vessels of gold and silver. And they offered burnt offerings in the house of the LORD continually all the
days of Jehoiada.
When they were finished, they brought the rest of the money to the king and Jehoiada to make with it the articles for the house of the LORD—utensils for the service and for the burnt offerings, dishes, and other objects of gold and silver. Throughout the days of Jehoiada, burnt offerings were presented regularly in the house of the LORD.
But Jehoiada waxed old, and was full of days when he died; an hundred and thirty years old was he when he died.
When Jehoiada was old and full of years, he died at the age of 130.
And he sought God in the
days of
Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions of God: and as long as he sought the LORD, God made him to
prosper.
He sought God throughout the
days of
Zechariah, who
instructed him in the fear of God. And as long as he sought the LORD, God gave him success.
And Uzziah the king was a
leper unto the
day of his death, and dwelt in a several house, being a
leper; for he was cut off from the house of the LORD: and Jotham his son was over the king’s house, judging the people of the land.
So King Uzziah was a
leper until the
day of his death. He lived in
isolation,
leprous and cut off from the house of the LORD, while his son Jotham had charge of the royal palace to
govern the people of the land.
For Pekah the son of Remaliah
slew in Judah an hundred and twenty thousand in one
day, which were all
valiant men; because they had
forsaken the LORD God of their fathers.
For in one
day Pekah son of Remaliah killed 120,000
valiant men in Judah. This happened because they had
forsaken the LORD, the God of their fathers.
Now they began on the first
day of the first month to
sanctify, and on the eighth
day of the month came they to the
porch of the LORD: so they
sanctified the house of the LORD in eight
days; and in the
sixteenth day of the first month they made an end.
They began the
consecration on the first
day of the first month, and on the eighth
day of the month they reached the
portico of the LORD. For eight more
days they consecrated the house of the LORD itself, finishing on the
sixteenth day of the first month.
Then they killed the
passover on the
fourteenth day of the second month: and the priests and the Levites were
ashamed, and
sanctified themselves, and brought in the burnt offerings into the house of the LORD.
And on the
fourteenth day of the second month they slaughtered the
Passover lamb. The priests and Levites were
ashamed, and they consecrated themselves and brought burnt offerings to the house of the LORD.
And the children of Israel that were present at Jerusalem kept the feast of
unleavened bread seven
days with great
gladness: and the Levites and the priests praised the LORD
day by
day, singing with loud instruments unto the LORD.
The Israelites who were present in Jerusalem celebrated the Feast of
Unleavened Bread for seven
days with great joy, and the Levites and priests praised the LORD
day after
day, accompanied by loud instruments of praise to the LORD.
And
Hezekiah spake
comfortably unto all the Levites that taught the good knowledge of the LORD: and they did eat throughout the feast seven
days, offering peace offerings, and making confession to the LORD God of their fathers.
And
Hezekiah encouraged all the Levites who performed
skillfully before the LORD. For seven
days they
ate their assigned portion, sacrificing
fellowship offerings and giving
thanks to the LORD, the God of their fathers.
And the whole assembly took counsel to keep other seven
days: and they kept other seven
days with
gladness.
The whole assembly agreed to observe seven more days, so they observed seven days with joy.
So there was great joy in Jerusalem: for since the time of Solomon the son of David king of Israel there was not the like in Jerusalem.
So there was great
rejoicing in Jerusalem, for nothing like this had happened there since the
days of Solomon son of David king of Israel.
In those
days Hezekiah was sick to the death, and prayed unto the LORD: and he spake unto him, and he gave him a sign.
In those
days Hezekiah became
mortally ill. So he prayed to the LORD, who spoke to him and gave him a sign.
Notwithstanding
Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD came not upon them in the
days of
Hezekiah.
Then
Hezekiah humbled the pride of his heart—he and the people of Jerusalem—so that the wrath of the LORD did not come upon them during the
days of
Hezekiah.
And
Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries that
pertained to the children of Israel, and made all that were present in Israel to serve, even to serve the LORD their God. And all his
days they departed not from following the LORD, the God of their fathers.
And
Josiah removed all the abominations from all the lands belonging to the Israelites, and he required
everyone in Israel to serve the LORD their God. Throughout his reign they did not turn aside from following the LORD, the God of their fathers.
So all the service of the LORD was prepared the same
day, to keep the
passover, and to offer burnt offerings upon the altar of the LORD, according to the commandment of king
Josiah.
So on that
day the entire service of the LORD was carried out for
celebrating the
Passover and offering burnt offerings on the altar of the LORD, according to the command of King
Josiah.
And the children of Israel that were present kept the
passover at that time, and the feast of
unleavened bread seven
days.
The Israelites who were present also observed the
Passover at that time, as well as the Feast of
Unleavened Bread for seven
days.
And there was no
passover like to that kept in Israel from the
days of Samuel the prophet; neither did all the kings of Israel keep such a
passover as
Josiah kept, and the priests, and the Levites, and all Judah and Israel that were present, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
No such
Passover had been observed in Israel since the
days of Samuel the prophet. None of the kings of Israel ever observed a
Passover like the one that
Josiah observed with the priests, the Levites, all Judah, the Israelites who were present, and the people of Jerusalem.
But he sent ambassadors to him, saying, What have I to do with thee, thou king of Judah? I come not against thee this
day, but against the house
wherewith I have war: for God commanded me to make
haste:
forbear thee from
meddling with God, who is with me, that he destroy thee not.
But Neco sent messengers to him, saying, “What is the issue between you and me, O king of Judah? I have not come against you
today, but I am fighting another dynasty. God told me to
hurry; so stop
opposing God, who is with me, or He will destroy you!”
Then Jeremiah
lamented over
Josiah, and to this
day all the choirs of men and women sing laments over
Josiah. They established them as a statute for Israel, and indeed they are written in the Book of Laments.
Jehoiachin was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months and ten
days in Jerusalem: and he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD.
Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months and ten
days. And he did evil in the sight of the LORD.
To fulfil the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as she lay
desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil
threescore and ten years.
So the land enjoyed its Sabbath rest all the
days of the
desolation, until seventy years were completed, in
fulfillment of the word of the LORD through Jeremiah.
They kept also the feast of tabernacles, as it is written, and offered the daily burnt offerings by number, according to the custom, as the duty of every day required;
They also celebrated the Feast of Tabernacles in accordance with what is written, and they offered burnt offerings daily based on the number prescribed for each day.
From the first day of the seventh month began they to offer burnt offerings unto the LORD. But the foundation of the temple of the LORD was not yet laid.
On the first day of the seventh month, the Israelites began to offer burnt offerings to the LORD, although the foundation of the temple of the LORD had not been laid.
Then they came to
Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the
days of Esar-haddon king of Assur, which brought us up
hither.
they approached
Zerubbabel and the heads of the families, saying, “Let us build with you because, like you, we seek your God and have been sacrificing to Him since the time of King Esar-haddon of Assyria, who brought us here.”
And
hired counsellors against them, to
frustrate their purpose, all the
days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of
Darius king of Persia.
They
hired counselors against them to
frustrate their plans throughout the reign of Cyrus king of Persia and down to the reign of
Darius king of Persia.
And in the
days of
Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto
Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the
Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the
Syrian tongue.
And in the
days of
Artaxerxes king of Persia, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his associates wrote a letter to
Artaxerxes. It was written in
Aramaic and then translated.
And that which they have need of, both young bullocks, and rams, and lambs, for the burnt offerings of the God of heaven, wheat, salt, wine, and oil, according to the appointment of the priests which are at Jerusalem, let it be given them day by day without fail:
Whatever is needed—young bulls, rams, and lambs for burnt offerings to the God of heaven, as well as wheat, salt, wine, and oil, as requested by the priests in Jerusalem—must be given to them daily without fail.
And this house was finished on the third
day of the month
Adar, which was in the sixth year of the reign of
Darius the king.
And this temple was completed on the third
day of the month of
Adar, in the sixth year of the reign of King
Darius.
And the children of the captivity kept the
passover upon the
fourteenth day of the first month.
And kept the feast of
unleavened bread seven
days with joy: for the LORD had made them joyful, and turned the heart of the king of Assyria unto them, to
strengthen their hands in the work of the house of God, the God of Israel.
For seven
days they kept the Feast of
Unleavened Bread with joy, because the LORD had made them joyful and turned the heart of the king of Assyria toward them to
strengthen their hands in the work on the house of the God of Israel.
For upon the first day of the first month began he to go up from Babylon, and on the first day of the fifth month came he to Jerusalem, according to the good hand of his God upon him.
He had begun the journey from Babylon on the first
day of the first month, and he arrived in Jerusalem on the first
day of the fifth month, for the
gracious hand of his God was upon him.
And I gathered them together to the river than runneth to
Ahava; and there abode we in tents three
days: and I viewed the people, and the priests, and found there none of the sons of Levi.
Now I assembled these exiles at the canal that flows to
Ahava, and we camped there three
days. And when I searched among the people and priests, I found no Levites there.
Then we departed from the river of
Ahava on the
twelfth day of the first month, to go unto Jerusalem: and the hand of our God was upon us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy, and of such as lay in wait by the way.
On the
twelfth day of the first month we set out from the
Ahava Canal to go to Jerusalem, and the hand of our God was upon us to protect us from the hands of the enemies and
bandits along the way.
And we came to Jerusalem, and abode there three days.
So we arrived at Jerusalem and rested there for three days.
Now on the fourth
day was the silver and the gold and the vessels
weighed in the house of our God by the hand of Meremoth the son of Uriah the priest; and with him was
Eleazar the son of
Phinehas; and with them was Jozabad the son of Jeshua, and Noadiah the son of Binnui, Levites;
On the fourth
day, in the house of our God, we
weighed out the silver and gold and sacred articles into the hand of Meremoth son of Uriah, the priest.
Eleazar son of
Phinehas was with him, along with the Levites Jozabad son of Jeshua and Noadiah son of Binnui.
Since the
days of our fathers have we been in a great
trespass unto this
day; and for our
iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a
spoil, and to confusion of face, as it is this
day.
From the
days of our fathers to this
day, our guilt has been great. Because of our
iniquities, we and our kings and priests have been delivered into the hands of the kings of the earth and put to the sword and captivity, to
pillage and
humiliation, as we are this
day.
O LORD God of Israel, thou art righteous: for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee because of this.
O LORD, God of Israel, You are righteous! For we remain this
day as a
remnant. Here we are before You in our guilt, though because of it no one can stand before You.”
And that
whosoever would not come within three
days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be
forfeited, and himself separated from the congregation of those that had been carried away.
Whoever failed to appear within three
days would
forfeit all his property, according to the counsel of the leaders and elders, and would himself be expelled from the assembly of the exiles.
Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered themselves together unto Jerusalem within three
days. It was the ninth month, on the
twentieth day of the month; and all the people sat in the street of the house of God,
trembling because of this matter, and for the great rain.
So within the three
days, all the men of Judah and Benjamin assembled in Jerusalem, and on the
twentieth day of the ninth month, all the people sat in the square at the house of God,
trembling regarding this matter and because of the heavy rain.
But the people are many, and it is a time of much rain, and we are not able to stand without, neither is this a work of one
day or two: for we are many that have
transgressed in this thing.
But there are many people here, and it is the
rainy season. We are not able to stay out in the open. Nor is this the work of one or two
days, for we have
transgressed greatly in this matter.
And the children of the captivity did so. And
Ezra the priest, with certain chief of the fathers, after the house of their fathers, and all of them by their names, were separated, and sat down in the first
day of the tenth month to examine the matter.
So the exiles did as proposed.
Ezra the priest selected men who were family heads, each of them identified by name, to represent their families. On the first
day of the tenth month they
launched the investigation,
And they made an end with all the men that had taken strange wives by the first day of the first month.
and by the first day of the first month they had dealt with all the men who had married foreign women.
And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and
wept, and
mourned certain
days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,
When I heard these words, I sat down and
wept. I
mourned for
days, fasting and praying before the God of heaven.
Let thine ear now be
attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now,
day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and
confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have
sinned against thee: both I and my father’s house have
sinned.
let Your eyes be open and Your ears
attentive to hear the prayer that I, Your servant, now pray before You
day and night for Your servants, the Israelites. I
confess the sins that we Israelites have committed against You. Both I and my father’s house have
sinned.
O Lord, I
beseech thee, let now thine ear be
attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name: and
prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this
day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king’s
cupbearer.
O Lord, may Your ear be
attentive to my prayer and to the prayers of Your servants who delight to
revere Your name. Give Your servant success this
day, I pray, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.” (At that time I was the
cupbearer to the king.)
So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.
After I had arrived in Jerusalem and had been there three days,
And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they
fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a
day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the
rubbish which are burned?
before his associates and the army of Samaria, saying, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Can they restore the wall by themselves? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they complete it in a
day? Can they bring these burnt stones back to life from the mounds of
rubble?”
Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.
So we prayed to our God and posted a guard against them day and night.
And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.
And from that
day on, half of my servants did the work while the other half held spears, shields, bows, and
armor. The officers stationed themselves behind all the people of Judah
Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, Let every one with his servant
lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labour on the
day.
At that time I also said to the people, “Let every man and his servant
spend the night inside Jerusalem, so that they can stand guard by night and work by
day.”
Restore, I pray you, to them, even this
day, their lands, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the
hundredth part of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them.
Please restore to them immediately their fields, vineyards, olive groves, and houses, along with the percentage of the money, grain, new wine, and oil that you have been
assessing them.”
Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the
twentieth year even unto the two and
thirtieth year of
Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor.
Furthermore, from the
day King
Artaxerxes appointed me to be their governor in the land of Judah, from his
twentieth year until his thirty-second year (twelve years total), neither I nor my brothers
ate the food
allotted to the governor.
Now that which was prepared for me daily was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten
days store of all sorts of wine: yet for all this required not I the bread of the governor, because the
bondage was heavy upon this people.
Each
day one ox, six choice sheep, and some fowl were prepared for me, and once every ten
days an abundance of all kinds of wine was provided. But I did not demand the food
allotted to the governor, because the burden on the people was so heavy.
So the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth
day of the month
Elul, in fifty and two
days.
So the wall was completed in fifty-two
days, on the twenty-fifth of
Elul.
Moreover in those
days the nobles of Judah sent many letters unto
Tobiah, and the letters of
Tobiah came unto them.
Also in those
days, the nobles of Judah sent many letters to
Tobiah, and
Tobiah’s letters came back to them.
And
Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first
day of the seventh month.
On the first
day of the seventh month,
Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly of men and women and all who could
listen and understand.
And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until
midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were
attentive unto the book of the law.
So
Ezra read it
aloud from
daybreak until
noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate, in front of the men and women and those who could understand. And all the people
listened attentively to the Book of the Law.
And
Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha, and
Ezra the priest the
scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This
day is holy unto the LORD your God;
mourn not, nor
weep. For all the people
wept, when they heard the words of the law.
Nehemiah the governor,
Ezra the priest and
scribe, and the Levites who were
instructing the people said to all of them, “This
day is holy to the LORD your God. Do not
mourn or
weep.” For all the people were
weeping as they heard the words of the Law.
Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this
day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye
sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.
Then
Nehemiah told them, “Go and eat what is rich, drink what is sweet, and send out portions to those who have nothing prepared, since
today is holy to our Lord. Do not
grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”
