And I, even I
Artaxerxes the king, do make a decree to all the treasurers which are beyond the river, that
whatsoever Ezra the priest, the
scribe of the law of the God of heaven, shall require of you, it be
done speedily,
I, King
Artaxerxes, decree to all the treasurers west of the Euphrates: Whatever
Ezra the priest, the
scribe of the Law of the God of heaven, may require of you, it must be provided
promptly,
Whatsoever is commanded by the God of heaven, let it be
diligently done for the house of the God of heaven: for why should there be wrath against the realm of the king and his sons?
Whatever is commanded by the God of heaven must be
done diligently for His house. For why should wrath fall on the realm of the king and his sons?
Now when these things were
done, the princes came to me, saying, The people of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the people of the lands, doing according to their abominations, even of the
Canaanites, the
Hittites, the
Perizzites, the Jebusites, the
Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the
Amorites.
After these things had been accomplished, the leaders approached me and said, “The people of Israel, including the priests and Levites, have not kept themselves separate from the surrounding peoples whose abominations are like those of the
Canaanites,
Hittites,
Perizzites, Jebusites,
Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians, and
Amorites.
Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that
tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be
done according to the law.
So now let us make a covenant before our God to send away all the foreign wives and their children, according to the counsel of my lord and of those who
tremble at the command of our God. Let it be
done according to the Law.
And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found nothing to answer.
and said, “We have
done our best to
buy back our Jewish brothers who were sold to foreigners, but now you are selling your own brothers, that they may be sold back to us!” But they remained silent, for they could find nothing to say.
Think upon me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people.
Remember me
favorably, O my God, for all that I have
done for this people.
Then I sent unto him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart.
Then I sent him this reply: “There is nothing to these rumors you are spreading; you are
inventing them in your own mind.”
For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be
weakened from the work, that it be not
done. Now therefore, O God,
strengthen my hands.
For they were all trying to
frighten us, saying, “Their hands will be
weakened in the work, and it will never be finished.” But now, my God,
strengthen my hands.
My God, think thou upon
Tobiah and
Sanballat according to these their works, and on the
prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear.
Their camels, four hundred thirty and five: six thousand seven hundred and twenty
asses.
And all the congregation of them that were come again out of the captivity made booths, and sat under the booths: for since the days of Jeshua the son of
Nun unto that day had not the children of Israel
done so. And there was very great
gladness.
The whole assembly who had returned from exile made booths and lived in them. From the days of Joshua son of
Nun until that day, the Israelites had not celebrated like this. And there was great
rejoicing.
Howbeit thou art just in all that is brought upon us; for thou hast
done right, but we have
done wickedly:
You are just in all that has
befallen us, because You have acted faithfully, while we have acted wickedly.
And we cast the lots among the priests, the Levites, and the people, for the wood offering, to bring it into the house of our God, after the houses of our fathers, at times appointed year by year, to burn upon the altar of the LORD our God, as it is written in the law:
We have cast lots among the priests, Levites, and people for the
donation of wood by our families at the appointed times each year. They are to bring it to the house of our God to burn on the altar of the LORD our God, as it is written in the Law.
And I came to Jerusalem, and understood of the evil that Eliashib did for
Tobiah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.
to return to Jerusalem. Then I discovered the evil that Eliashib had
done on behalf of
Tobiah by providing him a room in the courts of the house of God.
Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and
wipe not out my good deeds that I have
done for the house of my God, and for the offices thereof.
Remember me for this, O my God, and do not
blot out my deeds of loving devotion for the house of my God and for its services.
In those days saw I in Judah some
treading winepresses on the sabbath, and bringing in
sheaves, and
lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I
testified against them in the day wherein they sold
victuals.
In those days I saw people in Judah
treading winepresses on the Sabbath and bringing in grain and loading it on
donkeys, along with wine, grapes, and figs. All kinds of goods were being brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. So I
warned them against selling food on that day.
What shall we do unto the queen Vashti according to law, because she hath not performed the commandment of the king
Ahasuerus by the chamberlains?
“According to law,” he asked, “what should be
done with Queen Vashti, since she refused to obey the command of King
Xerxes delivered by the eunuchs?”
And Memucan answered before the king and the princes, Vashti the queen hath not
done wrong to the king only, but also to all the princes, and to all the people that are in all the provinces of the king
Ahasuerus.
And in the presence of the king and his princes, Memucan replied, “Queen Vashti has wronged not only the king, but all the princes and the peoples in all the provinces of King
Xerxes.
After these things, when the wrath of king
Ahasuerus was
appeased, he remembered Vashti, and what she had
done, and what was decreed against her.
Some time later, when the anger of King
Xerxes had
subsided, he remembered Vashti and what she had
done, and what had been decreed against her.
Esther had not yet shewed her kindred nor her people; as
Mordecai had charged her: for
Esther did the commandment of
Mordecai, like as when she was brought up with him.
And all the king’s servants, that were in the king’s gate, bowed, and reverenced
Haman: for the king had so commanded concerning him. But
Mordecai bowed not, nor did him reverence.
All the royal servants at the king’s gate bowed down and paid
homage to
Haman, because the king had commanded that this be
done for him. But
Mordecai would not bow down or pay
homage.
When
Mordecai perceived all that was
done,
Mordecai rent his clothes, and put on
sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and
cried with a loud and a bitter cry;
When
Mordecai learned of all that had happened, he
tore his clothes, put on
sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the middle of the city,
wailing loudly and bitterly.
And the king said, What honour and dignity hath been
done to
Mordecai for this? Then said the king’s servants that ministered unto him, There is nothing
done for him.
The king inquired, “What honor or dignity has been bestowed on
Mordecai for this act?” “Nothing has been
done for him,” replied the king’s attendants.
So
Haman came in. And the king said unto him, What shall be
done unto the man whom the king delighteth to honour? Now
Haman thought in his heart, To whom would the king delight to do honour more than to myself?
Haman entered, and the king asked him, “What should be
done for the man whom the king is delighted to honor?” Now
Haman thought to himself, “Whom would the king be delighted to honor more than me?”
And let this
apparel and horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king’s most noble princes, that they may
array the man
withal whom the king delighteth to honour, and bring him on
horseback through the street of the city, and
proclaim before him, Thus shall it be
done to the man whom the king delighteth to honour.
Let the
robe and the horse be entrusted to one of the king’s most noble princes. Let them
array the man the king wants to honor and
parade him on the horse through the city square,
proclaiming before him, ‘This is what is
done for the man whom the king is delighted to honor!’”
Then took
Haman the
apparel and the horse, and
arrayed Mordecai, and brought him on
horseback through the street of the city, and proclaimed before him, Thus shall it be
done unto the man whom the king delighteth to honour.
So
Haman took the
robe and the horse,
arrayed Mordecai, and
paraded him through the city square, crying out before him, “This is what is
done for the man whom the king is delighted to honor!”
And the king said unto
Esther the queen, The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in
Shushan the palace, and the ten sons of
Haman; what have they
done in the rest of the king’s provinces? now what is thy petition? and it shall be granted thee: or what is thy request further? and it shall be
done.
who said to Queen
Esther, “In the citadel of
Susa the Jews have killed and destroyed five hundred men, including
Haman’s ten sons. What have they
done in the rest of the royal provinces? Now what is your petition? It will be given to you. And what further do you request? It will be fulfilled.”
And the king commanded it so to be
done: and the decree was given at
Shushan; and they
hanged Haman’s ten sons.
So the king commanded that this be
done. An edict was issued in
Susa, and they
hanged the ten sons of
Haman.
This was
done on the
thirteenth day of the month of
Adar, and on the
fourteenth day they rested, making it a day of feasting and joy.
His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she
asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.
and he owned 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female
donkeys, and a very large number of servants. Job was the greatest man of all the people of the East.
I have
sinned; what shall I do unto thee, O thou preserver of men? why hast thou set me as a mark against thee, so that I am a burden to myself?
If I have
sinned, what have I
done to You, O watcher of mankind? Why have You made me Your
target, so that I am a burden to You?
For vain man would be wise, though man be born like a wild
ass’s
colt.
But a witless man can no more become wise than the
colt of a wild
donkey can be born a man!
Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this?
Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this?
Who shall declare his way to his face? and who shall repay him what he hath done?
Who denounces his
behavior to his face? Who repays him for what he has
done?
They drive away the
ass of the fatherless, they take the widow’s ox for a
pledge.
They drive away the
donkey of the fatherless and take the widow’s ox in
pledge.
Behold, as wild
asses in the desert, go they forth to their work; rising
betimes for a prey: the wilderness yieldeth food for them and for their children.
Indeed, like wild
donkeys in the desert, the poor go to work
foraging for food; the wasteland is food for their children.
When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only:
But when He remains silent, who can
condemn Him? When He hides His face, who can see Him? Yet He watches over both man and nation,
That which I see not teach thou me: if I have done iniquity, I will do no more.
Teach me what I cannot see; if I have done wrong, I will not do it again.’
Who hath
enjoined him his way? or who can say, Thou hast wrought iniquity?
Who has appointed His way for Him, or told Him, ‘You have done wrong’?
Who hath sent out the wild
ass free? or who hath loosed the bands of the wild
ass?
So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she
asses.
So the LORD blessed Job’s latter days more than his first. He owned 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen, and 1,000 female
donkeys.
O LORD my God, if I have done this; if there be iniquity in my hands;
O LORD my God, if I have done this, if injustice is on my hands,
The
fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have
done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.
The
fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt; their acts are
vile. There is no one who does good.
They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this.
They will come and
proclaim His righteousness to a people yet unborn— all that He has
done.
Give them according to their deeds, and according to the wickedness of their endeavours: give them after the work of their hands; render to them their desert.
Repay them according to their deeds and for their works of evil. Repay them for what their hands have done; bring back on them what they deserve.
Because they regard not the works of the LORD, nor the operation of his hands, he shall destroy them, and not build them up.
Since they show no regard for the works of the LORD or what His hands have
done, He will
tear them down and never rebuild them.
For the word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth.
For the word of the LORD is upright, and all His work is
trustworthy.
For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.
For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded, and it stood firm.
I was
dumb, I opened not my mouth; because thou
didst it.
I have become
mute; I do not open my mouth because of what You have
done.
Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.
Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders You have
done, and the plans You have for us— none can compare to You— if I
proclaim and declare them, they are more than I can count.
These things hast thou
done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as
thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes.
You have
done these things, and I kept silent; you thought I was just like you. But now I
rebuke you and
accuse you to your face.
Against thee, thee only, have I
sinned, and
done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.
Against You, You only, have I
sinned and
done what is evil in Your sight, so that You may be proved right when You speak and
blameless when You judge.
I will praise thee for ever, because thou hast done it: and I will wait on thy name; for it is good before thy saints.
I will praise You
forever, because You have
done it. I will wait on Your name— for it is good— in the presence of Your saints.
The
fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have
done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good.
The
fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt; their ways are
vile. There is no one who does good.
And all men shall fear, and shall declare the work of God; for they shall wisely consider of his doing.
Then all mankind will fear and
proclaim the work of God; so they will
ponder what He has
done.
Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I will declare what he hath done for my soul.
Come and
listen, all you who fear God, and I will declare what He has
done for me.
Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high, who hast done great things: O God, who is like unto thee!
Your righteousness reaches to the heavens, O God, You who have done great things. Who, O God, is like You?
Lift up thy feet unto the perpetual desolations; even all that the enemy hath done wickedly in the sanctuary.
Turn Your steps to the
everlasting ruins, to everything in the sanctuary the enemy has destroyed.
I will
meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.
I will
reflect on all You have
done and
ponder Your mighty deeds.
We will not hide them from their children,
shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath
done.
We will not hide them from their children, but will declare to the next generation the praises of the LORD and His might, and the wonders He has performed.
And
forgat his works, and his wonders that he had shewed them.
They
forgot what He had
done, the wonders He had shown them.
O sing unto the LORD a new song; for he hath
done marvellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath
gotten him the victory.
Sing to the LORD a new song, for He has done wonders; His right hand and holy arm have gained Him the victory.
Remember his marvellous works that he hath done; his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth;
Remember the wonders He has done, His marvels, and the judgments He has pronounced,
We have
sinned with our fathers, we have committed iniquity, we have
done wickedly.
We have
sinned like our fathers; we have
done wrong and acted wickedly.
They
forgat God their saviour, which had
done great things in Egypt;
They
forgot God their
Savior, who did great things in Egypt,
That they may know that this is thy hand; that thou, LORD, hast done it.
Let them know that this is Your hand, that You, O LORD, have done it.
They stand fast for ever and ever, and are done in truth and uprightness.
But our God is in the heavens: he hath
done whatsoever he hath pleased.
Our God is in heaven; He does as He pleases.
I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD.
I will not die, but I will live and
proclaim what the LORD has
done.
I have done judgment and justice: leave me not to mine oppressors.
I have done what is just and right; do not leave me to my oppressors.
LORD, I have hoped for thy salvation, and done thy commandments.
I wait for Your salvation, O LORD, and I carry out Your commandments.
What shall be given unto thee? or what shall be done unto thee, thou false tongue?
What will He do to you, and what will be added to you, O
deceitful tongue?
Then was our mouth filled with
laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The LORD hath
done great things for them.
Then our mouths were filled with
laughter, our tongues with shouts of joy. Then it was said among the nations, “The LORD has
done great things for them.”
The LORD hath
done great things for us;
whereof we are
glad.
The LORD has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.
O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us.
O Daughter of Babylon,
doomed to destruction, blessed is he who repays you as you have
done to us.
He hath not dealt so with any nation: and as for his judgments, they have not known them. Praise ye the LORD.
He has
done this for no other nation; they do not know His judgments.
Hallelujah!
Strive not with a man without cause, if he have
done thee no
harm.
Do not
accuse a man without cause, when he has
done you no
harm.
For they sleep not, except they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall.
For they cannot sleep unless they do evil; they are deprived of
slumber until they make someone fall.
Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me: I will render to the man according to his work.
Do not say, “I will do to him as he has done to me; I will repay the man according to his work.”
A
whip for the horse, a
bridle for the
donkey, and a rod for the backs of fools!
Such is the way of an
adulterous woman; she eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have
done no wickedness.
This is the way of an
adulteress: She eats and wipes her mouth and says, ‘I have
done nothing wrong.’
If thou hast
done foolishly in lifting up
thyself, or if thou hast thought evil, lay thine hand upon thy mouth.
Many daughters have
done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.
“Many daughters have
done noble things, but you
surpass them all!”
The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
What has been will be again, and what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.
And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are
done under heaven: this
sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised
therewith.
And I set my mind to seek and
explore by wisdom all that is
done under heaven. What a heavy burden God has laid upon the sons of men to occupy them!
I have seen all the works that are
done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and
vexation of spirit.
I have seen all the things that are
done under the sun, and have found them all to be
futile, a pursuit of the wind.
And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness, and folly: for what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been already done.
Then I turned to consider wisdom and madness and folly; for what more can the king’s successor do than what has already been accomplished?
Therefore I
hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun is
grievous unto me: for all is vanity and
vexation of spirit.
So I
hated life, because the work that is
done under the sun was
grievous to me. For everything is
futile and a pursuit of the wind.
Therefore I went about to cause my heart to
despair of all the labour which I took under the sun.
So my heart began to
despair over all the labor that I had
done under the sun.
He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.
He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set
eternity in the hearts of men, yet they cannot
fathom the work that God has
done from beginning to end.
So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are
done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were
oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.
Again I looked, and I considered all the oppression taking place under the sun. I saw the tears of the
oppressed, and they had no comforter; the power lay in the hands of their oppressors, and there was no comforter.
Yea, better is he than both they, which hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is
done under the sun.
But better than both is he who has not yet existed, who has not seen the evil that is done under the sun.
All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is
done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man ruleth over another to his own
hurt.
All this I have seen, applying my mind to every deed that is
done under the sun; there is a time when one man lords it over another to his own
detriment.
And so I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this is also vanity.
Then too, I saw the burial of the wicked who used to go in and out of the holy place, and they were praised in the city where they had
done so. This too is
futile.
There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.
There is a
futility that is
done on the earth: There are righteous men who get what the actions of the wicked deserve, and there are wicked men who get what the actions of the righteous deserve. I say that this too is
futile.
When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is
done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night
seeth sleep with his eyes:)
When I applied my mind to know wisdom and to observe the task that one performs on the earth—though his eyes do not see sleep in the day or even in the night—
Then I
beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is
done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it;
yea further; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.
I saw every work of God, and that a man is unable to
comprehend the work that is
done under the sun.
Despite his efforts to search it out, he cannot find its meaning; even if the wise man claims to know, he is unable to
comprehend.
