Berean Standard Bible BSB Bible
For the LORD thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand: he knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the LORD thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.
Indeed, the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched over your journey through this vast wilderness. The LORD your God has been with you these forty years, and you have lacked nothing.
The
Emims dwelt therein in times past, a people
great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims;
(The Emites used to live there, a people great and many, as tall as the Anakites.
A people
great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; but the LORD destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their
stead:
They were a people
great and many, as tall as the Anakites. But the LORD destroyed them from before the
Ammonites, who drove them out and settled in their place,
All these cities were
fenced with high walls, gates, and bars; beside unwalled towns a
great many.
All these cities were fortified with high walls and gates and bars, and there were many more unwalled villages.
O Lord GOD, thou hast begun to
shew thy servant thy
greatness, and thy mighty hand: for what God is there in heaven or in earth, that can do according to thy works, and according to thy might?
“O Lord GOD, You have begun to show Your greatness and power to Your servant. For what god in heaven or on earth can perform such works and mighty acts as Yours?
Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.
Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding in the sight of the peoples, who will hear of all these statutes and say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.”
For what nation is there so
great, who hath God so
nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for?
For what nation is great enough to have a god as near to them as the LORD our God is to us whenever we call on Him?
And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?
And what nation is
great enough to have righteous statutes and ordinances like this entire law I set before you
today?
For ask now of the days that are past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man upon the earth, and ask from the one side of heaven unto the other, whether there hath been any such thing as this great thing is, or hath been heard like it?
Indeed, ask now from one end of the heavens to the other about the days that long preceded you, from the day that God created man on earth: Has anything as great as this ever happened or been reported?
Or hath God
assayed to go and take him a nation from the midst of another nation, by temptations, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by a stretched out arm, and by
great terrors, according to all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?
Or has any god tried to take as his own a nation out of another nation—by trials, signs, wonders, and war, by a strong hand and an outstretched arm, and by great terrors—as the LORD your God did for you in Egypt, before your eyes?
Out of heaven he made thee to hear his voice, that he might
instruct thee: and upon earth he shewed thee his
great fire; and thou heardest his words out of the midst of the fire.
He let you hear His voice from heaven to discipline you, and on earth He showed you His great fire, and you heard His words out of the fire.
And because he loved thy fathers, therefore he chose their seed after them, and brought thee out in his sight with his mighty power out of Egypt;
Because He loved your fathers, He chose their descendants after them and brought you out of Egypt by His presence and great power,
To drive out nations from before thee greater and mightier than thou art, to bring thee in, to give thee their land for an inheritance, as it is this day.
to drive out before you nations greater and mightier than you, and to bring you into their land and give it to you for your inheritance, as it is this day.
These words the LORD spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he added no more. And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me.
The LORD spoke these commandments in a loud voice to your whole assembly out of the fire, the cloud, and the deep darkness on the mountain; He added nothing more. And He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me.
And ye said, Behold, the LORD our God hath shewed us his glory and his
greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire: we have seen this day that God
doth talk with man, and he liveth.
and you said, “Behold, the LORD our God has shown us His glory and
greatness, and we have heard His voice out of the fire.
Today we have seen that a man can live even if God speaks with him.
Now therefore why should we die? for this
great fire will
consume us: if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any more, then we shall die.
But now, why should we die? For this
great fire will
consume us, and we will die, if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any longer.
Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase
mightily, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey.
Hear, O Israel, and be careful to observe them, so that you may
prosper and multiply
greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has promised you.
And it shall be, when the LORD thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he
sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee
great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not,
And when the LORD your God brings you into the land He
swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, that He would give you—a land with
great and splendid cities that you did not build,
And the LORD shewed signs and wonders,
great and
sore, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his household, before our eyes:
Before our eyes the LORD inflicted
great and
devastating signs and wonders on Egypt, on Pharaoh, and on all his household.
When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land
whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the
Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the
Amorites, and the
Canaanites, and the
Perizzites, and the
Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations
greater and mightier than thou;
When the LORD your God brings you into the land that you are entering to possess, and He drives out before you many nations—the
Hittites, Girgashites,
Amorites,
Canaanites,
Perizzites,
Hivites, and Jebusites, seven nations larger and stronger than you—
If thou shalt say in thine heart, These nations are more than I; how can I dispossess them?
You may say in your heart, “These nations are greater than we are; how can we drive them out?”
The great temptations which thine eyes saw, and the signs, and the wonders, and the mighty hand, and the stretched out arm, whereby the LORD thy God brought thee out: so shall the LORD thy God do unto all the people of whom thou art afraid.
the great trials that you saw, the signs and wonders, and the mighty hand and outstretched arm by which the LORD your God brought you out. The LORD your God will do the same to all the peoples you now fear.
Thou shalt not be
affrighted at them: for the LORD thy God is among you, a mighty God and terrible.
Do not be
terrified by them, for the LORD your God, who is among you, is a
great and
awesome God.
But the LORD thy God shall deliver them unto thee, and shall destroy them with a mighty destruction, until they be destroyed.
But the LORD your God will give them over to you and throw them into great confusion, until they are destroyed.
Who led thee through that
great and terrible wilderness, wherein were
fiery serpents, and scorpions, and
drought, where there was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint;
He led you through the vast and
terrifying wilderness with its
venomous snakes and scorpions, a
thirsty and waterless land. He brought you water from the rock of flint.
Hear, O Israel: Thou art to pass over Jordan this day, to go in to possess nations
greater and mightier than
thyself, cities
great and
fenced up to heaven,
Hear, O Israel:
Today you are about to cross the Jordan to go in and dispossess nations
greater and stronger than you, with large cities fortified to the heavens.
A people
great and tall, the children of the Anakims, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard say, Who can stand before the children of
Anak!
The people are strong and tall, the descendants of the
Anakim. You know about them, and you have heard it said, “Who can stand up to the sons of
Anak?”
Let me alone, that I may destroy them, and
blot out their name from under heaven: and I will make of thee a nation mightier and
greater than they.
Leave Me alone, so that I may destroy them and
blot out their name from under heaven. Then I will make you into a nation mightier and
greater than they are.”
I prayed therefore unto the LORD, and said, O Lord GOD, destroy not thy people and thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed through thy greatness, which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand.
And I prayed to the LORD and said, “O Lord GOD, do not destroy Your people, Your inheritance, whom You redeemed through Your greatness and brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand.
Yet they are thy people and thine inheritance, which thou broughtest out by thy mighty power and by thy stretched out arm.
But they are Your people, Your inheritance, whom You brought out by Your great power and outstretched arm.”
For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward:
For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the
great, mighty, and
awesome God, showing no
partiality and accepting no
bribe.
He is thy praise, and he is thy God, that hath done for thee these great and terrible things, which thine eyes have seen.
He is your praise and He is your God, who has done for you these
great and
awesome wonders that your eyes have seen.
And know ye this day: for I speak not with your children which have not known, and which have not seen the
chastisement of the LORD your God, his
greatness, his mighty hand, and his stretched out arm,
Know this day that it is not your children who have known and seen the discipline of the LORD your God: His greatness, His mighty hand, and His outstretched arm;
But your eyes have seen all the great acts of the LORD which he did.
For it is your own eyes that have seen every great work that the LORD has done.
Then will the LORD drive out all these nations from before you, and ye shall possess
greater nations and mightier than
yourselves.
then the LORD will drive out all these nations before you, and you will dispossess nations greater and stronger than you.
the little
owl, the
great owl, the white
owl,
And if the way be too long for thee, so that thou art not able to carry it; or if the place be too far from thee, which the LORD thy God shall choose to set his name there, when the LORD thy God hath blessed thee:
But if the distance is too great for you to carry that with which the LORD your God has blessed you, because the place where the LORD your God will choose to put His Name is too far away,
Save when there shall be no poor among you; for the LORD shall
greatly bless thee in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it:
There will be no poor among you, however, because the LORD will surely
bless you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess as an inheritance,
Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.
He must not take many wives for himself, lest his heart go
astray. He must not
accumulate for himself large amounts of silver and gold.
According to all that thou desiredst of the LORD thy God in
Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, neither let me see this
great fire any more, that I die not.
This is what you asked of the LORD your God at
Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the LORD our God or see this
great fire anymore, so that we will not die!”
Lest the
avenger of the blood pursue the
slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and
slay him; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he
hated him not in time past.
Otherwise, the
avenger of blood might pursue the
manslayer in a
rage, overtake him if the distance is
great, and strike him dead though he did not deserve to die, since he did not intend any
harm.
Thou shalt not have in thy
bag divers weights, a
great and a small.
You shall not have two differing weights in your
bag, one heavy and one light.
Thou shalt not have in thine house
divers measures, a
great and a small.
You shall not have two differing measures in your house, one large and one small.
And thou shalt speak and say before the LORD thy God, A
Syrian ready to perish was my father, and he went down into Egypt, and
sojourned there with a few, and became there a nation,
great, mighty, and
populous:
and you are to declare before the LORD your God, “My father was a wandering
Aramean, and he went down to Egypt few in number and lived there and became a
great nation, mighty and numerous.
And the LORD brought us forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with great terribleness, and with signs, and with wonders:
Then the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with great terror, signs, and wonders.
And it shall be on the day when ye shall pass over Jordan unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, that thou shalt set thee up
great stones, and
plaister them with
plaister:
And on the day you cross the Jordan into the land that the LORD your God is giving you, set up large stones and coat them with
plaster.
Then the LORD will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, even
great plagues, and of long continuance, and
sore sicknesses, and of long continuance.
He will bring upon you and your descendants extraordinary disasters, severe and lasting plagues, and terrible and
chronic sicknesses.
The great temptations which thine eyes have seen, the signs, and those great miracles:
You saw with your own eyes the
great trials, and those
miraculous signs and wonders.
Even all nations shall say, Wherefore hath the LORD done thus unto this land? what meaneth the heat of this great anger?
So all the nations will ask, ‘Why has the LORD done such a thing to this land? Why this
great outburst of anger?’
And the LORD rooted them out of their land in anger, and in wrath, and in
great indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.
The LORD uprooted them from their land in His anger,
rage, and
great wrath, and He cast them into another land, where they are
today.’
Because I will
publish the name of the LORD:
ascribe ye
greatness unto our God.
And in all that mighty hand, and in all the great terror which Moses shewed in the sight of all Israel.
and no prophet who performed all the mighty acts of power and
awesome deeds that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.
From the wilderness and this
Lebanon even unto the
great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the
Hittites, and unto the
great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.
Your territory shall extend from the wilderness and
Lebanon to the
great River Euphrates—all the land of the
Hittites—and west as far as the
Great Sea.
And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when ye hear the sound of the
trumpet, all the people shall
shout with a
great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall
ascend up every man straight before him.
And when there is a long blast of the ram’s horn and you hear its sound, have all the people give a mighty
shout. Then the wall of the city will
collapse and all your people will charge straight into the city.”
So the people
shouted when the priests
blew with the
trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the
trumpet, and the people
shouted with a
great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.
So when the rams’ horns sounded, the people
shouted. When they heard the blast of the horn, the people gave a
great shout, and the wall
collapsed. Then all the people charged straight into the city and captured it.
For the
Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall
environ us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what
wilt thou do unto thy
great name?
When the
Canaanites and all who live in the land hear about this, they will
surround us and
wipe out our name from the earth. Then what will You do for Your
great name?”
And they raised over him a
great heap of stones unto this day. So the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of
Achor, unto this day.
And they
heaped over
Achan a large pile of rocks that remains to this day. So the LORD turned from His burning anger. Therefore that place is called the Valley of
Achor to this day.
And the king of
Ai he
hanged on a tree until
eventide: and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his
carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise
thereon a
great heap of stones, that remaineth unto this day.
He hung the king of
Ai on a tree until evening, and at
sunset Joshua commanded that they take down the body from the tree and throw it down at the entrance of the city gate. And over it they raised a large pile of rocks, which remains to this day.
And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the
great sea over against
Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the
Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof;
And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the LORD thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were
sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.
The Gibeonites answered, “Your servants were told clearly that the LORD your God had commanded His servant Moses to give you all the land and
wipe out all its inhabitants before you. So we
greatly feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we have done this.
That they feared
greatly, because
Gibeon was a
great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was
greater than
Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.
So Adoni-zedek and his people were
greatly alarmed, because
Gibeon was a
great city, like one of the royal cities; it was larger than
Ai, and all its men were mighty.
And the LORD
discomfited them before Israel, and
slew them with a
great slaughter at
Gibeon, and
chased them along the way that goeth up to Beth-horon, and
smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.
And the LORD threw them into confusion before Israel, who defeated them in a
great slaughter at
Gibeon, pursued them along the
ascent to Beth-horon, and struck them down as far as Azekah and Makkedah.
And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Beth-horon, that the LORD cast down
great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel
slew with the sword.
As they fled before Israel along the descent from Beth-horon to Azekah, the LORD cast down on them large hailstones from the sky, and more of them were killed by the hailstones than by the swords of the Israelites.
And Joshua said, Roll great stones upon the mouth of the cave, and set men by it for to keep them:
So Joshua said, “Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave, and post men there to guard them.
And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of
slaying them with a very
great slaughter, till they were consumed, that the rest which remained of them entered into
fenced cities.
So Joshua and the Israelites continued to
inflict a terrible slaughter until they had finished them off, and the remaining survivors retreated to the fortified cities.
And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been
hid, and laid
great stones in the cave’s mouth, which remain until this very day.
At
sunset Joshua ordered that they be taken down from the trees and thrown into the cave in which they had hidden. Then large stones were placed against the mouth of the cave, and the stones are there to this day.
And they went out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand that is upon the sea shore in multitude, with horses and
chariots very many.
So these kings came out with all their armies, a multitude as numerous as the sand on the
seashore, along with a
great number of horses and
chariots.
And the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel, who
smote them, and
chased them unto
great Zidon, and unto Misrephoth-
maim, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they
smote them, until they left them none remaining.
and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel, who struck them down and pursued them all the way to
Greater Sidon and Misrephoth-
maim, and eastward as far as the Valley of Mizpeh. They struck them down, leaving no survivors.
Now therefore give me this mountain,
whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were
great and
fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said.
Now therefore give me this hill country that the LORD promised me on that day, for you
yourself heard then that the
Anakim were there, with
great and fortified cities. Perhaps with the LORD’s help I will drive them out, as the LORD has spoken.”
And the name of
Hebron before was Kirjath-arba; which Arba was a
great man among the Anakims. And the land had rest from war.
(
Hebron used to be called Kiriath-arba, after Arba, the
greatest man among the
Anakim.) Then the land had rest from war.
And the west border was to the great sea, and the coast thereof. This is the coast of the children of Judah round about according to their families.
And the western border was the coastline of the Great Sea. These are the boundaries around the clans of the descendants of Judah.
Ashdod with her towns and her villages,
Gaza with her towns and her villages, unto the river of Egypt, and the
great sea, and the border thereof:
Ashdod, with its towns and villages;
Gaza, with its towns and villages, as far as the
Brook of Egypt and the coastline of the
Great Sea.
And the children of Joseph spake unto Joshua, saying, Why hast thou given me but one lot and one portion to
inherit, seeing I am a
great people,
forasmuch as the LORD hath blessed me hitherto?
Then the sons of Joseph said to Joshua, “Why have you given us only one portion as an inheritance? We have many people, because the LORD has blessed us abundantly.”
And Joshua answered them, If thou be a
great people, then get thee up to the wood country, and cut down for
thyself there in the land of the
Perizzites and of the giants, if mount Ephraim be too narrow for thee.
Joshua answered them, “If you have so many people that the hill country of Ephraim is too small for you, go to the forest and clear for
yourself an area in the land of the
Perizzites and the
Rephaim.”
And Joshua spake unto the house of Joseph, even to Ephraim and to
Manasseh, saying, Thou art a
great people, and hast
great power: thou shalt not have one lot only:
So Joshua said to the house of Joseph—to Ephraim and
Manasseh—“You have many people and
great strength. You shall not have just one
allotment,
And
Hebron, and Rehob, and Hammon, and Kanah, even unto
great Zidon;
It went on to Ebron, Rehob, Hammon, and Kanah, as far as
Greater Sidon.
And their coast was from Heleph, from Allon to Zaanannim, and Adami, Nekeb, and Jabneel, unto Lakum; and the outgoings thereof were at Jordan:
Their border started at Heleph and the great tree of Zaanannim, passing Adami-nekeb and Jabneel as far as Lakkum and ending at the Jordan.
And he spake unto them, saying, Return with much riches unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and with iron, and with very much
raiment: divide the
spoil of your enemies with your brethren.
saying, “Return to your homes with your
great wealth, with immense herds of
livestock, with silver, gold, bronze, iron, and very many clothes. Divide with your brothers the
spoil of your enemies.”
And when they came unto the borders of Jordan, that are in the land of
Canaan, the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad and the half tribe of
Manasseh built there an altar by Jordan, a
great altar to see to.
And when they came to Geliloth near the Jordan in the land of
Canaan, the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh built an imposing altar there by the Jordan.
Behold, I have divided unto you by lot these nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, even unto the great sea westward.
See, I have
allotted as an inheritance to your tribes these remaining nations, including all the nations I have already cut off, from the Jordan westward to the
Great Sea.
For the LORD hath driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath been able to stand before you unto this day.
The LORD has driven out great and powerful nations before you, and to this day no one can stand against you.
For the LORD our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of
bondage, and which did those
great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed:
For the LORD our God brought us and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and performed these great signs before our eyes. He also protected us throughout our journey and among all the nations through which we traveled.
And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak, that was by the sanctuary of the LORD.
Joshua recorded these things in the Book of the Law of God. Then he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak that was near the sanctuary of the LORD.
But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.
As Adoni-bezek fled, they pursued him, seized him, and cut off his thumbs and
big toes.
And Adoni-bezek said,
Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their
great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.
Then Adoni-bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and
big toes cut off have gathered the scraps under my table. As I have done to them, so God has repaid me.” And they brought him to Jerusalem, where he died.
And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the LORD, that he did for Israel.
And the people served the LORD throughout the days of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him, who had seen all the great works that the LORD had done for Israel.
Whithersoever they went out, the hand of the LORD was against them for evil, as the LORD had said, and as the LORD had
sworn unto them: and they were
greatly distressed.
Wherever Israel marched out, the hand of the LORD was against them to bring
calamity, just as He had
sworn to them. So they were
greatly distressed.
Now
Heber the Kenite, which was of the children of Hobab the father in law of Moses, had severed himself from the
Kenites, and pitched his tent unto the plain of Zaanaim, which is by Kedesh.
Now
Heber the Kenite had moved away from the
Kenites, the descendants of Hobab the father-in-law of Moses, and had pitched his tent by the
great tree of Zaanannim, which was near Kedesh.
And the princes of
Issachar were with
Deborah; even
Issachar, and also
Barak: he was sent on foot into the valley. For the divisions of
Reuben there were
great thoughts of heart.
Why abodest thou among the sheepfolds, to hear the bleatings of the flocks? For the divisions of
Reuben there were
great searchings of heart.
Why did you sit among the sheepfolds to hear the
whistling for the flocks? In the clans of
Reuben there was
great indecision.
For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; for both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it.
For the Midianites came with their
livestock and their tents like a
great swarm of locusts. They and their camels were innumerable, and they entered the land to
ravage it.
And Israel was
greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel
cried unto the LORD.
And he
smote them from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very
great slaughter. Thus the children of
Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.
With a
great blow he
devastated twenty cities from Aroer to the vicinity of Minnith, as far as
Abel-keramim. So the
Ammonites were subdued before the Israelites.
And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said,
Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.
As soon as
Jephthah saw her, he
tore his clothes and said, “No! Not my daughter! You have brought me to my knees! You have brought
great misery upon me, for I have given my word to the LORD and cannot take it back.”
And
Jephthah said unto them, I and my people were at
great strife with the children of
Ammon; and when I called you, ye delivered me not out of their hands.
But
Jephthah replied, “My people and I had a serious conflict with the
Ammonites, and when I called, you did not save me out of their hands.
And he
smote them
hip and
thigh with a
great slaughter: and he went down and dwelt in the top of the rock Etam.
And he struck them
ruthlessly with a
great slaughter, and then went down and stayed in the cave at the rock of Etam.
And the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and said unto her,
Entice him, and see wherein his
great strength lieth, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to
afflict him: and we will give thee every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver.
The lords of the Philistines went to her and said, “
Entice him and find out the source of his
great strength and how we can overpower him to
tie him up and
subdue him. Then each one of us will give you eleven hundred shekels of silver.”
So
Delilah said to
Samson, “Please tell me the source of your
great strength and how you can be
tied up and subdued.”
And she said unto him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thine heart is not with me? thou hast
mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy
great strength lieth.
“How can you say, ‘I love you,’” she asked, “when your heart is not with me? This is the third time you have
mocked me and failed to
reveal to me the source of your
great strength!”
