And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.
A second time the angel of the LORD returned and touched him, saying, “Get up and eat, or the journey will be too much for you.”
And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a
great and strong wind rent the mountains, and
brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an
earthquake; but the LORD was not in the
earthquake:
Then the LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the LORD. Behold, the LORD is about to pass by.” And a
great and mighty wind
tore into the mountains and
shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an
earthquake, but the LORD was not in the
earthquake.
And, behold, there came a prophet unto
Ahab king of Israel, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou seen all this
great multitude? behold, I will deliver it into thine hand this day; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD.
Meanwhile a prophet approached
Ahab king of Israel and declared, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Do you see this entire
great army? Behold, I will deliver it into your hand this very day, and you will know that I am the LORD.’”
And the king of Israel went out, and
smote the horses and
chariots, and
slew the Syrians with a
great slaughter.
Then the king of Israel marched out and attacked the horses and
chariots,
inflicting a
great slaughter on the Arameans.
And there came a man of God, and spake unto the king of Israel, and said, Thus saith the LORD, Because the Syrians have said, The LORD is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys, therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
Then the man of God approached the king of Israel and said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Because the Arameans think the LORD is a god of the hills and not of the valleys, I will deliver all this great army into your hand. Then you will know that I am the LORD.’”
But the king of Syria commanded his thirty and two captains that had rule over his
chariots, saying, Fight neither with small nor
great, save only with the king of Israel.
Now the king of
Aram had ordered his thirty-two
chariot commanders, “Do not fight with
anyone, small or
great, except the king of Israel.”
Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his
stead, and offered him for a burnt offering upon the wall. And there was
great indignation against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.
So he took his
firstborn son, who was to succeed him, and offered him as a burnt offering on the city wall. And there was
great fury against the Israelites, so they withdrew and returned to their own land.
And it fell on a day, that
Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a
great woman; and she
constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as
oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread.
One day
Elisha went to Shunem, and a prominent woman who lived there persuaded him to have a meal. So whenever he would pass by, he would stop there to eat.
And
Elisha came again to
Gilgal: and there was a
dearth in the land; and the sons of the prophets were sitting before him: and he said unto his servant, Set on the
great pot, and
seethe pottage for the sons of the prophets.
When
Elisha returned to
Gilgal, there was a famine in the land. As the sons of the prophets were sitting at his feet, he said to his
attendant, “Put on the large pot and
boil some
stew for the sons of the prophets.”
Now
Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a
great man with his master, and honourable, because by him the LORD had given
deliverance unto Syria: he was also a mighty man in valour, but he was a
leper.
Now
Naaman, the commander of the army of the king of
Aram, was a
great man in his master’s sight and highly regarded, for through him the LORD had given victory to
Aram. And he was a mighty man of
valor, but he was a
leper.
And his servants came near, and spake unto him, and said, My father, if the prophet had
bid thee do some
great thing, wouldest thou not have done it? how much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, and be clean?
Naaman’s servants, however, approached him and said, “My father, if the prophet had told you to do some
great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, ‘Wash and be
cleansed’?”
Therefore sent he thither horses, and
chariots, and a
great host: and they came by night, and compassed the city about.
the king of
Aram sent horses,
chariots, and a
great army. They went there by night and surrounded the city.
And he prepared
great provision for them: and when they had eaten and
drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their master. So the bands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel.
So the king prepared a
great feast for them, and after they had finished eating and drinking, he sent them away, and they returned to their master. And the
Aramean raiders did not come into the land of Israel again.
And there was a
great famine in Samaria: and, behold, they besieged it, until an
ass’s head was sold for
fourscore pieces of silver, and the fourth part of a
cab of
dove’s dung for five pieces of silver.
So there was a
great famine in Samaria. Indeed, they besieged the city so long that a
donkey’s head sold for eighty shekels of silver, and a quarter
cab of
dove’s dung sold for five shekels of silver.
For the Lord had made the host of the Syrians to hear a noise of
chariots, and a noise of horses, even the noise of a
great host: and they said one to another, Lo, the king of Israel hath
hired against us the kings of the
Hittites, and the kings of the Egyptians, to come upon us.
For the Lord had caused the Arameans to hear the sound of
chariots, horses, and a
great army, so that they said to one another, “Look, the king of Israel must have
hired the kings of the
Hittites and Egyptians to attack us.”
And the king talked with Gehazi the servant of the man of God, saying, Tell me, I pray thee, all the
great things that
Elisha hath done.
Now the king had been speaking to Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, saying, “Please relate to me all the
great things
Elisha has done.”
And
Hazael said, But what, is thy servant a dog, that he should do this
great thing? And
Elisha answered, The LORD hath shewed me that thou shalt be king over Syria.
“But how could your servant, a mere dog, do such a
monstrous thing?” said
Hazael. And
Elisha answered, “The LORD has shown me that you will be king over
Aram.”
Then he wrote a letter the second time to them, saying, If ye be mine, and if ye will
hearken unto my voice, take ye the heads of the men your master’s sons, and come to me to
Jezreel by to
morrow this time. Now the king’s sons, being seventy persons, were with the
great men of the city, which brought them up.
Then
Jehu wrote them a second letter and said: “If you are on my side, and if you will obey me, then bring the heads of your master’s sons to me at
Jezreel by this time
tomorrow.” Now the sons of the king, seventy in all, were being brought up by the leading men of the city.
So
Jehu slew all that remained of the house of
Ahab in
Jezreel, and all his
great men, and his kinsfolks, and his priests, until he left him none remaining.
So
Jehu killed
everyone in
Jezreel who remained of the house of
Ahab, as well as all his
great men and close friends and priests, leaving him without a single
survivor.
Now therefore call unto me all the prophets of
Baal, all his servants, and all his priests; let none be wanting: for I have a
great sacrifice to do to
Baal;
whosoever shall be wanting, he shall not live. But
Jehu did it in
subtilty, to the intent that he might destroy the worshippers of
Baal.
Now, therefore,
summon to me all the prophets of
Baal, all his servants, and all his priests. See that no one is missing, for I have a
great sacrifice for
Baal.
Whoever is missing will not live.” But
Jehu was acting
deceptively in order to destroy the servants of
Baal.
And king
Ahaz commanded Urijah the priest, saying, Upon the
great altar burn the morning burnt offering, and the evening meat offering, and the king’s burnt sacrifice, and his meat offering, with the burnt offering of all the people of the land, and their meat offering, and their drink offerings; and
sprinkle upon it all the blood of the burnt offering, and all the blood of the sacrifice: and the
brasen altar shall be for me to
enquire by.
Then King
Ahaz commanded Uriah the priest, “Offer on the
great altar the morning burnt offering, the evening grain offering, and the king’s burnt offering and grain offering, as well as the burnt offerings, grain offerings, and drink offerings of all the people of the land.
Sprinkle on the altar all the blood of the burnt offerings and sacrifices. But I will use the bronze altar to seek guidance.”
For he rent Israel from the house of David; and they made
Jeroboam the son of Nebat king: and
Jeroboam drave Israel from following the LORD, and made them sin a
great sin.
When the LORD had
torn Israel away from the house of David, they made
Jeroboam son of Nebat king, and
Jeroboam led Israel away from following the LORD and caused them to commit a
great sin.
But the LORD, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt with great power and a stretched out arm, him shall ye fear, and him shall ye worship, and to him shall ye do sacrifice.
Instead, worship the LORD, who brought you out of the land of Egypt with great power and an outstretched arm. You are to bow down to Him and offer sacrifices to Him.
And the king of Assyria sent
Tartan and Rabsaris and
Rab-shakeh from
Lachish to king
Hezekiah with a
great host against Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. And when they were come up, they came and stood by the
conduit of the upper
pool, which is in the
highway of the fuller’s field.
Nevertheless, the king of Assyria sent the
Tartan, the Rabsaris, and the
Rabshakeh, along with a
great army, from
Lachish to King
Hezekiah at Jerusalem. They advanced up to Jerusalem and stationed themselves by the
aqueduct of the upper
pool, on the road to the
Launderer’s Field.
And
Rab-shakeh said unto them, Speak ye now to
Hezekiah, Thus saith the
great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?
The
Rabshakeh said to them, “Tell
Hezekiah that this is what the
great king, the king of Assyria, says: What is the basis of this confidence of yours?
Then
Rab-shakeh stood and
cried with a loud voice in the Jews language, and spake, saying, Hear the word of the
great king, the king of Assyria:
Then the
Rabshakeh stood and called out loudly in Hebrew: “Hear the word of the
great king, the king of Assyria!
And he made his son pass through the fire, and observed times, and used enchantments, and dealt with familiar spirits and wizards: he wrought much wickedness in the sight of the LORD, to
provoke him to anger.
He sacrificed his own son in the fire, practiced
sorcery and
divination, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did
great evil in the sight of the LORD,
provoking Him to anger.
But they
hearkened not: and
Manasseh seduced them to do more evil than did the nations whom the LORD destroyed before the children of Israel.
But the people did not
listen and
Manasseh led them
astray, so that they did
greater evil than the nations that the LORD had destroyed before the Israelites.
Go ye,
enquire of the LORD for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that is found: for
great is the wrath of the LORD that is
kindled against us, because our fathers have not
hearkened unto the words of this book, to do according unto all that which is written concerning us.
“Go and inquire of the LORD for me, for the people, and for all Judah concerning the words in this book that has been found. For great is the wrath of the LORD that burns against us because our fathers have not obeyed the words of this book by doing all that is written about us.”
And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the people, both small and great: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which was found in the house of the LORD.
And he went up to the house of the LORD with all the people of Judah and Jerusalem, as well as the priests and the prophets—all the people small and great—and in their hearing he read all the words of the Book of the Covenant that had been found in the house of the LORD.
Notwithstanding the LORD turned not from the fierceness of his
great wrath,
wherewith his anger was
kindled against Judah, because of all the provocations that
Manasseh had
provoked him
withal.
Nevertheless, the LORD did not turn away from the
fury of His burning anger, which was
kindled against Judah because of all that
Manasseh had done to
provoke Him to anger.
And he burnt the house of the LORD, and the king’s house, and all the houses of Jerusalem, and every great man’s house burnt he with fire.
He burned down the house of the LORD, the royal palace, and all the houses of Jerusalem—every
significant building.
And all the people, both small and great, and the captains of the armies, arose, and came to Egypt: for they were afraid of the Chaldees.
Then all the people small and great, together with the commanders of the army, arose and fled to Egypt for fear of the Chaldeans.
These mentioned by their names were princes in their families: and the house of their fathers increased greatly.
These men listed by name were the leaders of their clans. Their families increased greatly,
So David waxed greater and greater: for the LORD of hosts was with him.
And David became greater and greater, for the LORD of Hosts was with him.
And they set themselves in the midst of that
parcel, and delivered it, and
slew the Philistines; and the LORD saved them by a
great deliverance.
But
Eleazar and David stationed themselves in the middle of the field and defended it. They struck down the Philistines, and the LORD brought about a
great victory.
And he
slew an Egyptian, a man of
great stature, five cubits high; and in the Egyptian’s hand was a
spear like a
weaver’s beam; and he went down to him with a staff, and
plucked the
spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and
slew him with his own
spear.
He also killed an Egyptian, a huge man five cubits tall. Although the Egyptian had a
spear like a
weaver’s beam in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club,
snatched the
spear from his hand, and killed the Egyptian with his own
spear.
These were of the sons of
Gad, captains of the host: one of the least was over an hundred, and the
greatest over a thousand.
These Gadites were army commanders, the least of whom was a
match for a hundred, and the
greatest for a thousand.
For at that time day by day there came to David to help him, until it was a great host, like the host of God.
For at that time men came to David day after day to help him, until he had a great army, like the army of God.
And of the children of Benjamin, the kindred of Saul, three thousand: for hitherto the greatest part of them had kept the ward of the house of Saul.
From Benjamin, the
kinsmen of Saul: 3,000, most of whom had remained
loyal to the house of Saul up to that time.
For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised: he also is to be feared above all gods.
For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods.
And I have been with thee
whithersoever thou hast walked, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee, and have made thee a name like the name of the
great men that are in the earth.
I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make for you a name like the greatest in the land.
And yet this was a small thing in thine eyes, O God; for thou hast also spoken of thy servant’s house for a great while to come, and hast regarded me according to the estate of a man of high degree, O LORD God.
And as if this was a small thing in Your eyes, O God, You have spoken about the future of the house of Your servant and have regarded me as a man of great distinction, O LORD God.
O LORD, for thy servant’s sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all this greatness, in making known all these great things.
O LORD. For the sake of Your servant and according to Your own heart, You have accomplished this great thing and revealed all Your greatness.
And what one nation in the earth is like thy people Israel, whom God went to
redeem to be his own people, to make thee a name of
greatness and terribleness, by driving out nations from before thy people, whom thou hast redeemed out of Egypt?
And who is like Your people Israel—the one nation on earth whom God went out to
redeem as a people for Himself? You made a name for
Yourself through
great and
awesome wonders by driving out nations from before Your people, whom You redeemed from Egypt.
Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were
greatly ashamed. And the king said,
Tarry at
Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.
When someone came and told David about his men, he sent messengers to meet them, since the men had been thoroughly
humiliated. The king told them, “Stay in
Jericho until your beards have grown back, and then return.”
And David took the crown of their king from off his head, and found it to
weigh a talent of gold, and there were precious stones in it; and it was set upon David’s head: and he brought also exceeding much
spoil out of the city.
Then David took the crown from the head of their king. It was found to
weigh a talent of gold and was set with precious stones, and it was placed on David’s head. And David took a
great amount of
plunder from the city.
And yet again there was war at
Gath, where was a man of
great stature, whose fingers and toes were four and twenty, six on each hand, and six on each foot: and he also was the son of the
giant.
And there was still another battle at
Gath, where there was a man of
great stature with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot—twenty-four in all. He too was descended from Rapha,
And David said unto God, I have
sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I
beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very
foolishly.
Then David said to God, “I have
sinned greatly because I have done this thing. Now I
beg You to take away the iniquity of Your servant, for I have acted very
foolishly.”
And David said unto
Gad, I am in a
great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for very
great are his
mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.
David answered
Gad, “I am deeply distressed. Please, let me fall into the hand of the LORD, for His
mercies are very
great; but do not let me fall into the hands of men.”
But the word of the LORD came to me, saying, Thou hast shed blood abundantly, and hast made great wars: thou shalt not build an house unto my name, because thou hast shed much blood upon the earth in my sight.
but this word of the LORD came to me: ‘You have shed much blood and
waged great wars. You are not to build a house for My Name because you have shed so much blood on the ground before Me.
Now, behold, in my trouble I have prepared for the house of the LORD an hundred thousand talents of gold, and a thousand thousand talents of silver; and of brass and iron without weight; for it is in abundance: timber also and stone have I prepared; and thou mayest add
thereto.
Now behold, I have taken
great pains to provide for the house of the LORD—100,000 talents of gold, 1,000,000 talents of silver, and bronze and iron too
great to be
weighed. I have also provided timber and stone, and you may add to them.
And they cast lots, ward against ward, as well the small as the great, the teacher as the scholar.
They cast lots for their duties, young and old alike, teacher as well as pupil.
And they cast lots, as well the small as the great, according to the house of their fathers, for every gate.
They cast lots for each gate, according to their families, young and old alike.
Furthermore David the king said unto all the congregation, Solomon my son, whom alone God hath chosen, is yet young and tender, and the work is
great: for the palace is not for man, but for the LORD God.
Then King David said to the whole assembly, “My son Solomon, the one whom God has chosen, is young and inexperienced. The task is great because this palace is not for man, but for the LORD God.
Then the people
rejoiced, for that they offered willingly, because with perfect heart they offered willingly to the LORD: and David the king also
rejoiced with
great joy.
And the people
rejoiced at the willing
response of their leaders, for they had given to the LORD freely and wholeheartedly. And King David also
rejoiced greatly.
Thine, O LORD, is the
greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art
exalted as head above all.
Yours, O LORD, is the
greatness and the power and the glory and the
splendor and the majesty, for everything in heaven and on earth belongs to You. Yours, O LORD, is the kingdom, and You are
exalted as head over all.
Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all.
Both riches and honor come from You, and You are the ruler over all. In Your hands are power and might to
exalt and give strength to all.
And did eat and drink before the LORD on that day with
great gladness. And they made Solomon the son of David king the second time, and
anointed him unto the LORD to be the chief governor, and
Zadok to be priest.
That day they
ate and
drank with
great joy in the presence of the LORD. Then, for a second time, they designated David’s son Solomon as king,
anointing him before the LORD as ruler, and
Zadok as the priest.
And Solomon said unto God, Thou hast shewed
great mercy unto David my father, and hast made me to reign in his
stead.
Solomon replied to God: “You have shown much loving devotion to my father David, and You have made me king in his place.
Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this thy people, that is so great?
Now grant me wisdom and knowledge, so that I may lead this people. For who is able to
govern this
great people of Yours?”
And the house which I build is great: for great is our God above all gods.
The house that I am building will be great, for our God is greater than all gods.
Even to prepare me timber in abundance: for the house which I am about to build shall be wonderful great.
to prepare for me timber in abundance, because the temple I am building will be great and wonderful.
And the
greater house he cieled with
fir tree, which he overlaid with fine gold, and set
thereon palm trees and chains.
He
paneled the main room with
cypress, which he overlaid with fine gold and decorated with palm trees and chains.
Furthermore he made the court of the priests, and the
great court, and doors for the court, and overlaid the doors of them with brass.
He made the
courtyard of the priests and the large court with its doors, and he overlaid the doors with bronze.
Thus Solomon made all these vessels in great abundance: for the weight of the brass could not be found out.
Solomon made all these articles in such great abundance that the weight of the bronze could not be determined.
Moreover concerning the stranger, which is not of thy people Israel, but is come from a far country for thy great name’s sake, and thy mighty hand, and thy stretched out arm; if they come and pray in this house;
And as for the foreigner who is not of Your people Israel but has come from a distant land because of Your great name and Your mighty hand and outstretched arm—when he comes and prays toward this temple,
Also at the same time Solomon kept the feast seven days, and all Israel with him, a very
great congregation, from the entering in of
Hamath unto the river of Egypt.
So at that time Solomon and all Israel with him—a very
great assembly of people from Lebo-
hamath to the
Brook of Egypt—kept the feast for seven days.
And when the queen of
Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon, she came to prove Solomon with hard questions at Jerusalem, with a very
great company, and camels that bare spices, and gold in abundance, and precious stones: and when she was come to Solomon, she communed with him of all that was in her heart.
Now when the queen of
Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon, she came to test him with difficult questions. She arrived in Jerusalem with a very large
caravan—with camels bearing spices, gold in abundance, and precious stones. So she came to Solomon and spoke with him about all that was on her mind.
Howbeit I believed not their words, until I came, and mine eyes had seen it: and, behold, the one half of the
greatness of thy wisdom was not told me: for thou exceedest the fame that I heard.
But I did not believe the reports until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not half of the greatness of your wisdom was told to me. You have far exceeded the report I heard.
And she gave the king an hundred and twenty talents of gold, and of spices
great abundance, and precious stones: neither was there any such
spice as the queen of
Sheba gave king Solomon.
Then she gave the king 120 talents of gold, a
great quantity of spices, and precious stones. There had never been such spices as those the queen of
Sheba gave to King Solomon.
Moreover the king made a great throne of ivory, and overlaid it with pure gold.
Additionally, the king made a great throne of ivory and overlaid it with pure gold.
And in every several city he put shields and spears, and made them exceeding strong, having Judah and Benjamin on his side.
He also put shields and spears in all the cities and strengthened them greatly. So Judah and Benjamin belonged to him.
And now ye think to
withstand the kingdom of the LORD in the hand of the sons of David; and ye be a
great multitude, and there are with you golden
calves, which
Jeroboam made you for gods.
And now you think you can resist the kingdom of the LORD, which is in the hands of David’s descendants. You are indeed a vast army, and you have with you the golden
calves that
Jeroboam made for you as gods.
And
Abijah and his people
slew them with a
great slaughter: so there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men.
Then
Abijah and his people struck them with a mighty blow, and 500,000 chosen men of Israel fell slain.
And
Asa and the people that were with him pursued them unto
Gerar: and the Ethiopians were overthrown, that they could not recover themselves; for they were destroyed before the LORD, and before his host; and they carried away very much
spoil.
Then
Asa and his army pursued them as far as
Gerar. The Cushites fell and could not recover, for they were
crushed before the LORD and His army. So the people of Judah carried off a
great amount of
plunder And in those times there was no peace to him that went out, nor to him that came in, but great vexations were upon all the inhabitants of the countries.
In those days there was no safety for travelers, because the residents of the lands had many conflicts.
And he gathered all Judah and Benjamin, and the strangers with them out of Ephraim and
Manasseh, and out of
Simeon: for they fell to him out of Israel in abundance, when they saw that the LORD his God was with him.
And he assembled all Judah and Benjamin, along with those from the tribes of Ephraim,
Manasseh, and
Simeon who had settled among them, for
great numbers had come over to him from Israel when they saw that the LORD his God was with him.
That
whosoever would not seek the LORD God of Israel should be put to death, whether small or
great, whether man or woman.
And
whoever would not seek the LORD, the God of Israel, would be put to death, whether young or old, man or woman.
And
Asa in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding
great: yet in his disease he sought not to the LORD, but to the physicians.
In the thirty-ninth year of his reign,
Asa became diseased in his feet, and his
malady became increasingly severe. Yet even in his illness he did not seek the LORD, but only the physicians.
And they buried him in his own
sepulchres, which he had made for himself in the city of David, and laid him in the bed which was filled with sweet odours and
divers kinds of spices prepared by the
apothecaries’ art: and they made a very
great burning for him.
And he was buried in the tomb that he had cut out for himself in the City of David. They laid him on a
bier that was full of spices and various
blended perfumes; then they made a
great fire in his honor.
And
Jehoshaphat waxed
great exceedingly; and he built in Judah castles, and cities of store.
Jehoshaphat grew stronger and stronger, and he built fortresses and store cities in Judah
Now the king of Syria had commanded the captains of the
chariots that were with him, saying, Fight ye not with small or
great, save only with the king of Israel.
Now the king of
Aram had ordered his
chariot commanders, “Do not fight with
anyone, small or
great, except the king of Israel.”
Then there came some that told
Jehoshaphat, saying, There cometh a
great multitude against thee from beyond the sea on this side Syria; and, behold, they be Hazazon-tamar, which is En-gedi.
Then some men came and told
Jehoshaphat, “A vast army is coming against you from
Edom, from beyond the Sea; they are already in Hazazon-tamar” (that is, En-gedi).
O our God,
wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this
great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee.
Our God, will You not judge them? For we are powerless before this vast army that comes against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.”
And he said,
Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king
Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this
great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s.
And he said, “
Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem!
Listen, King
Jehoshaphat! This is what the LORD says: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army, for the battle does not belong to you, but to God.
And their father gave them
great gifts of silver, and of gold, and of precious things, with
fenced cities in Judah: but the kingdom gave he to Jehoram; because he was the
firstborn.
Their father had given them many gifts of silver and gold and precious things, as well as the fortified cities in Judah; but he gave the kingdom to Jehoram because he was the
firstborn.
Behold, with a
great plague will the LORD
smite thy people, and thy children, and thy wives, and all thy goods:
So behold, the LORD is about to strike your people, your sons, your wives, and all your possessions with a serious blow.
And thou shalt have
great sickness by disease of thy
bowels, until thy
bowels fall out by reason of the sickness day by day.
And day after day you
yourself will suffer from a severe illness, a disease of your
bowels, until it causes your
bowels to come out.’”
For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men, and the LORD delivered a very
great host into their hand, because they had
forsaken the LORD God of their fathers. So they executed judgment against
Joash.
Although the
Aramean army had come with only a few men, the LORD delivered into their hand a very
great army. Because Judah had
forsaken the LORD, the God of their fathers, judgment was executed on
Joash.
And when they were departed from him, (for they left him in
great diseases,) his own servants
conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and
slew him on his bed, and he died: and they buried him in the city of David, but they buried him not in the
sepulchres of the kings.
And when the Arameans had withdrawn, they left
Joash severely wounded. His own servants
conspired against him for
shedding the blood of the son of Jehoiada the priest, and they killed him on his bed. So he died and was buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.
Now concerning his sons, and the
greatness of the burdens laid upon him, and the repairing of the house of God, behold, they are written in the story of the book of the kings. And
Amaziah his son reigned in his
stead.
The accounts of the sons of
Joash, as well as the many pronouncements about him and about the restoration of the house of God, are indeed written in the Treatise of the Book of the Kings. And his son
Amaziah reigned in his place.
Then
Amaziah separated them, to wit, the army that was come to him out of Ephraim, to go home again: wherefore their anger was
greatly kindled against Judah, and they returned home in
great anger.
So
Amaziah dismissed the troops who had come to him from Ephraim and sent them home. And they were
furious with Judah and returned home in
great anger.
But the soldiers of the army which
Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell upon the cities of Judah, from Samaria even unto Beth-horon, and
smote three thousand of them, and took much
spoil.
Meanwhile the troops that
Amaziah had dismissed from battle
raided the cities of Judah, from Samaria to Beth-horon. They struck down 3,000 people and carried off a
great deal of
plunder.
And he made in Jerusalem engines, invented by
cunning men, to be on the towers and upon the bulwarks, to shoot arrows and
great stones
withal. And his name spread far abroad; for he was marvellously helped, till he was strong.
And in Jerusalem he made
skillfully designed devices to shoot arrows and
catapult large stones from the towers and corners. So his fame spread far and wide, for he was helped
tremendously so that he became powerful.
Wherefore the LORD his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Syria; and they
smote him, and carried away a
great multitude of them
captives, and brought them to Damascus. And he was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who
smote him with a
great slaughter.
So the LORD his God delivered
Ahaz into the hand of the king of
Aram, who attacked him and took many
captives to Damascus.
Ahaz was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who struck him with
great force.
And the children of Israel carried away
captive of their brethren two hundred thousand, women, sons, and daughters, and took also away much
spoil from them, and brought the
spoil to Samaria.
Then the Israelites took 200,000
captives from their
kinsmen—women, sons, and daughters. They also carried off a
great deal of
plunder and brought it to Samaria.
And said unto them, Ye shall not bring in the
captives hither: for whereas we have
offended against the LORD already, ye intend to add more to our sins and to our
trespass: for our
trespass is
great, and there is fierce wrath against Israel.
“You must not bring the
captives here,” they said, “for you are
proposing to bring guilt upon us from the LORD and to add to our sins and our guilt. For our guilt is
great, and fierce anger is upon Israel.”
And there assembled at Jerusalem much people to keep the feast of
unleavened bread in the second month, a very
great congregation.
In the second month, a very
great assembly gathered in Jerusalem to
celebrate the Feast of
Unleavened Bread.
And the children of Israel that were present at Jerusalem kept the feast of
unleavened bread seven days with
great gladness: and the Levites and the priests praised the LORD day by day, singing with loud instruments unto the LORD.
The Israelites who were present in Jerusalem celebrated the Feast of
Unleavened Bread for seven days with
great joy, and the Levites and priests praised the LORD day after day, accompanied by loud instruments of praise to the LORD.
