Berean Standard Bible BSB Bible
A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.
A good name is more desirable than great riches; favor is better than silver and gold.
And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to
appetite.
and put a knife to your throat if you possess a
great appetite.
The father of the righteous shall
greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.
The father of a righteous man will
greatly rejoice, and he who fathers a wise son will delight in him.
Put not forth
thyself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of
great men:
Do not
exalt yourself in the presence of the king, and do not stand in the place of
great men;
The
great God that formed all things both rewardeth the
fool, and rewardeth transgressors.
When righteous men do
rejoice, there is
great glory: but when the wicked rise, a man is hidden.
When the righteous triumph, there is great glory, but when the wicked rise, men hide themselves.
I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to
great estate, and have
gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem:
yea, my heart had
great experience of wisdom and knowledge.
I said to myself, “Behold, I have grown and increased in wisdom beyond all those before me who were over Jerusalem, and my mind has observed a wealth of wisdom and knowledge.”
I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards:
I expanded my pursuits. I built houses and planted vineyards for myself.
I got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before me:
I acquired menservants and maidservants, and servants were born in my house. I also owned more herds and flocks than
anyone in Jerusalem before me,
So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me.
So I became great and surpassed all in Jerusalem who had preceded me; and my wisdom remained with me.
For there is a man whose labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in
equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a
great evil.
When there is a man who has labored with wisdom, knowledge, and skill, and he must give his portion to a man who has not worked for it, this too is
futile and a
great evil.
Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man is great upon him.
For there is a right time and procedure to every purpose, though a man’s misery weighs
heavily upon him.
This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me:
I have also seen this wisdom under the sun, and it was great to me:
There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it:
There was a small city with few men. A mighty king came against it, surrounded it, and built large siege ramps against it.
If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offences.
If the ruler’s temper flares against you, do not
abandon your post, for calmness lays
great offenses to rest.
Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place.
Folly is appointed to great heights, but the rich sit in lowly positions.
As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste.
Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest is my beloved among the young men. I delight to sit in his shade, and his fruit is sweet to my taste.
And the mean man boweth down, and the
great man humbleth himself: therefore
forgive them not.
So mankind is brought low, and man is humbled— do not
forgive them!
In mine ears said the LORD of hosts, Of a truth many houses shall be
desolate, even
great and fair, without inhabitant.
I heard the LORD of Hosts declare: “Surely many houses will become
desolate,
great mansions left unoccupied.
And the LORD have removed men far away, and there be a
great forsaking in the midst of the land.
until the LORD has driven men far away and the land is utterly
forsaken.
Moreover the LORD said unto me, Take thee a
great roll, and write in it with a man’s pen concerning Maher-shalal-
hash-baz.
Then the LORD said to me, “Take a large
scroll and write on it with an ordinary
stylus: Maher-shalal-
hash-baz.
The people that walked in darkness have seen a
great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light
shined.
The people walking in darkness have seen a
great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has
dawned.
Cry out and
shout, thou inhabitant of
Zion: for
great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee.
Cry out and sing, O citizen of
Zion, for
great among you is the Holy One of Israel.”
The noise of a multitude in the mountains, like as of a
great people; a
tumultuous noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together: the LORD of hosts mustereth the host of the battle.
Listen, a
tumult on the mountains, like that of a
great multitude!
Listen, an
uproar among the kingdoms, like nations gathered together! The LORD of Hosts is
mobilizing an army for war.
But now the LORD hath spoken, saying, Within three years, as the years of an
hireling, and the glory of Moab shall be
contemned, with all that
great multitude; and the
remnant shall be very small and feeble.
And now the LORD says, “In three years, as a
hired worker counts the years, Moab’s
splendor will become an object of contempt, with all her many people. And those who are left will be few and feeble.”
And it shall be for a sign and for a witness unto the LORD of hosts in the land of Egypt: for they shall cry unto the LORD because of the oppressors, and he shall send them a saviour, and a great one, and he shall deliver them.
It will be a sign and a witness to the LORD of Hosts in the land of Egypt. When they cry out to the LORD because of their oppressors, He will send them a
savior and defender to
rescue them.
And by
great waters the seed of Sihor, the harvest of the river, is her revenue; and she is a
mart of nations.
On the great waters came the grain of Shihor; the harvest of the Nile was the revenue of Tyre; she was the merchant of the nations.
Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun
ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount
Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.
The moon will be confounded and the sun will be
ashamed; for the LORD of Hosts will reign on Mount
Zion and in Jerusalem, and before His elders with
great glory.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that the
great trumpet shall be
blown, and they shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and the outcasts in the land of Egypt, and shall worship the LORD in the holy mount at Jerusalem.
And in that day a great ram’s horn will sound, and those who were perishing in Assyria will come forth with those who were exiles in Egypt. And they will worship the LORD on the holy mountain in Jerusalem.
And there shall be upon every high mountain, and upon every high hill, rivers and streams of waters in the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall.
And from every high mountain and every raised hill, streams of water will flow in the day of great slaughter, when the towers fall.
And a man shall be as an hiding place from the wind, and a
covert from the
tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a
great rock in a
weary land.
Each will be like a shelter from the wind, a refuge from the storm, like streams of water in a dry land, like the shadow of a
great rock in an
arid land.
Thy tacklings are loosed; they could not well
strengthen their mast, they could not spread the sail: then is the prey of a
great spoil divided; the
lame take the prey.
Your ropes are
slack; they cannot secure the mast or spread the sail. Then an abundance of spoils will be divided, and even the
lame will carry off
plunder.
The sword of the LORD is filled with blood, it is made fat with fatness, and with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the
kidneys of rams: for the LORD hath a sacrifice in
Bozrah, and a
great slaughter in the land of
Idumea.
The sword of the LORD is bathed in blood. It drips with fat— with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the
kidneys of rams. For the LORD has a sacrifice in
Bozrah, a
great slaughter in the land of
Edom.
But the
cormorant and the
bittern shall possess it; the
owl also and the
raven shall dwell in it: and he shall stretch out upon it the line of confusion, and the stones of
emptiness.
The desert
owl and
screech owl will possess it, and the
great owl and
raven will dwell in it. The LORD will stretch out over
Edom a measuring line of
chaos and a
plumb line of destruction.
There shall the
great owl make her nest, and lay, and
hatch, and gather under her shadow: there shall the vultures also be gathered, every one with her
mate.
There the
owl will make her nest; she will lay and
hatch her eggs and gather her
brood under her shadow. Even there the birds of prey will gather, each with its
mate.
And
Rabshakeh said unto them, Say ye now to
Hezekiah, Thus saith the
great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?
The
Rabshakeh said to them, “Tell
Hezekiah that this is what the
great king, the king of Assyria, says: What is the basis of this confidence of yours?
Then
Rabshakeh stood, and
cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and said, Hear ye the words of the
great king, the king of Assyria.
Then the
Rabshakeh stood and called out loudly in Hebrew: “Hear the words of the
great king, the king of Assyria!
Behold, for peace I had great bitterness: but thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption: for thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back.
Surely for my own
welfare I had such
great anguish; but Your love has delivered me from the pit of
oblivion, for You have cast all my sins behind Your back.
Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth.
Lift up your eyes on high: Who created all these? He leads forth the
starry host by number; He calls each one by name. Because of His
great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.
They shall be turned back, they shall be
greatly ashamed, that trust in
graven images, that say to the
molten images, Ye are our gods.
But those who trust in idols and say to
molten images, ‘You are our gods!’ will be turned back in utter shame.
But these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and
widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy
sorceries, and for the
great abundance of thine enchantments.
These two things will overtake you in a moment, in a single day: loss of children, and
widowhood. They will come upon you in full measure, in spite of your many
sorceries and the
potency of your spells.
Art thou not it which hath dried the sea, the waters of the
great deep; that hath made the depths of the sea a way for the
ransomed to pass over?
Was it not You who dried up the sea, the waters of the great deep, who made a road in the depths of the sea for the redeemed to cross over?
Therefore will I divide him a portion with the
great, and he shall divide the
spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made
intercession for the transgressors.
Therefore I will
allot Him a portion with the
great, and He will divide the spoils with the strong, because He has poured out His life unto death, and He was numbered with the transgressors. Yet He bore the sin of many and made
intercession for the transgressors.
For a small moment have I
forsaken thee; but with
great mercies will I gather thee.
And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children.
Then all your sons will be taught by the LORD, and great will be their prosperity.
You went to
Molech with oil and multiplied your perfumes. You have sent your envoys a
great distance; you have descended even to
Sheol itself.
Thou art
wearied in the
greatness of thy way; yet saidst thou not, There is no hope: thou hast found the life of thine hand; therefore thou
wast not
grieved.
You are
wearied by your many journeys, but you did not say, “There is no hope!” You found
renewal of your strength; therefore you did not grow weak.
I will
greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the
robe of righteousness, as a
bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a
bride adorneth herself with her jewels.
I will
rejoice greatly in the LORD, my soul will
exult in my God; for He has clothed me with garments of salvation and
wrapped me in a
robe of righteousness, as a
bridegroom wears a priestly
headdress, as a
bride adorns herself with her jewels.
Who is this that cometh from
Edom, with
dyed garments from
Bozrah? this that is glorious in his
apparel, travelling in the
greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.
I will mention the lovingkindnesses of the LORD, and the praises of the LORD, according to all that the LORD hath bestowed on us, and the
great goodness toward the house of Israel, which he hath bestowed on them according to his
mercies, and according to the multitude of his lovingkindnesses.
I will make known the LORD’s loving devotion and His
praiseworthy acts, because of all that the LORD has done for us— the many good things for the house of Israel according to His
great compassion and loving devotion.
Rejoice ye with Jerusalem, and be
glad with her, all ye that love her:
rejoice for joy with her, all ye that
mourn for her:
They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man’s, shall he return unto her again? shall not that land be
greatly polluted? but thou hast played the
harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, saith the LORD.
“If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him to marry another, can he ever return to her? Would not such a land be completely
defiled? But you have played the
harlot with many lovers— and you would return to Me?” declares the LORD.
Set up the standard toward
Zion: retire, stay not: for I will bring evil from the north, and a
great destruction.
Raise a signal flag toward
Zion. Seek refuge! Do not delay! For I am bringing
disaster from the north, and terrible destruction.
Then said I,
Ah, Lord GOD! surely thou hast
greatly deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall have peace; whereas the sword reacheth unto the soul.
Then I said, “
Ah, Lord GOD, how completely You have
deceived this people and Jerusalem by saying, ‘You will have peace,’ while a sword is at our throats.”
I will get me unto the
great men, and will speak unto them; for they have known the way of the LORD, and the judgment of their God: but these have altogether broken the yoke, and
burst the bonds.
I will go to the powerful and speak to them. Surely they know the way of the LORD, the justice of their God.” But they too, with one
accord, had broken the yoke and
torn off the chains.
As a
cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of
deceit: therefore they are become
great, and
waxen rich.
Like cages full of birds, so their houses are full of
deceit. Therefore they have become powerful and rich.
O ye children of Benjamin, gather
yourselves to
flee out of the midst of Jerusalem, and blow the
trumpet in Tekoa, and set up a sign of fire in Beth-haccerem: for evil appeareth out of the north, and
great destruction.
“Run for cover, O sons of Benjamin;
flee from Jerusalem! Sound the ram’s horn in Tekoa; send up a signal over Beth-haccherem, for
disaster looms from the north, even
great destruction.
For from the least of them even unto the
greatest of them every one is given to
covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.
“For from the least of them to the
greatest, all are
greedy for gain; from prophet to priest, all practice
deceit.
Thus saith the LORD, Behold, a people cometh from the north country, and a great nation shall be raised from the sides of the earth.
This is what the LORD says: “Behold, an army is coming from the land of the north; a
great nation is
stirred up from the ends of the earth.
Therefore will I give their wives unto others, and their fields to them that shall
inherit them: for every one from the least even unto the
greatest is given to
covetousness, from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.
Therefore I will give their wives to other men and their fields to new owners. For from the least of them to the
greatest, all are
greedy for gain; from prophet to priest, all practice
deceit.
For a voice of
wailing is heard out of
Zion, How are we
spoiled! we are
greatly confounded, because we have
forsaken the land, because our dwellings have cast us out.
For the sound of
wailing is heard from
Zion: ‘How
devastated we are! How
great is our shame! For we have abandoned the land because our dwellings have been
torn down.’”
Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O LORD; thou art
great, and thy name is
great in might.
There is none like You, O LORD. You are great, and Your name is mighty in power.
Behold, the noise of the
bruit is come, and a
great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah
desolate, and a den of
dragons.
Listen! The sound of a report is coming— a
great commotion from the land to the north. The cities of Judah will be made a
desolation, a
haunt for jackals.
The LORD called thy name, A green olive tree, fair, and of goodly fruit: with the noise of a
great tumult he hath
kindled fire upon it, and the branches of it are broken.
The LORD once called you a flourishing olive tree, beautiful with well-formed fruit. But with a mighty
roar He will set it on fire, and its branches will be consumed.
Thus saith the LORD, After this manner will I
mar the pride of Judah, and the
great pride of Jerusalem.
“This is what the LORD says: In the same way I will ruin the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem.
And if thou say in thine heart, Wherefore come these things upon me? For the greatness of thine iniquity are thy skirts discovered, and thy heels made bare.
And if you ask
yourself, “Why has this happened to me?” It is because of the magnitude of your iniquity that your skirts have been
stripped off and your body has been exposed.
Therefore thou shalt say this word unto them; Let mine eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease: for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a
great breach, with a very
grievous blow.
You are to speak this word to them: ‘My eyes overflow with tears; day and night they do not cease, for the virgin daughter of my people has been
shattered by a
crushing blow, a severely
grievous wound.
Both the
great and the small shall die in this land: they shall not be buried, neither shall men
lament for them, nor cut themselves, nor make themselves
bald for them:
“Both
great and small will die in this land. They will not be buried or
mourned, nor will
anyone cut himself or
shave his head for them.
And it shall come to pass, when thou shalt
shew this people all these words, and they shall say unto thee, Wherefore hath the LORD pronounced all this
great evil against us? or what is our iniquity? or what is our sin that we have committed against the LORD our God?
When you tell these people all these things, they will ask you, ‘Why has the LORD pronounced all this
great disaster against us? What is our guilt? What is the sin that we have committed against the LORD our God?’
But the LORD is with me as a mighty terrible one: therefore my persecutors shall
stumble, and they shall not prevail: they shall be
greatly ashamed; for they shall not
prosper: their
everlasting confusion shall never be forgotten.
But the LORD is with me like a
fearsome warrior. Therefore, my persecutors will
stumble and will not prevail. Since they have not succeeded, they will be utterly put to shame, with an
everlasting disgrace that will never be forgotten.
Cursed be the man who brought
tidings to my father, saying, A man child is born unto thee; making him very
glad.
Cursed be the man who brought my father the news, saying, “A son is born to you,” bringing him
great joy.
Because he
slew me not from the
womb; or that my mother might have been my grave, and her
womb to be always
great with me.
because he did not kill me in the
womb so that my mother might have been my grave, and her
womb forever enlarged.
And I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger, and in
fury, and in
great wrath.
And I Myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and a mighty arm, with anger,
fury, and
great wrath.
And I will
smite the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast: they shall die of a
great pestilence.
I will strike down the residents of this city, both man and beast. They will die in a terrible plague.’
And many nations shall pass by this city, and they shall say every man to his neighbour, Wherefore hath the LORD done thus unto this great city?
And many nations will pass by this city and ask one another, ‘Why has the LORD done such a thing to this great city?’
That saith, I will build me a wide house and large chambers, and cutteth him out windows; and it is cieled with
cedar, and painted with
vermilion.
who says, ‘I will build myself a
great palace, with
spacious upper rooms.’ So he cuts windows in it, panels it with
cedar, and paints it with
vermilion.
For many nations and
great kings shall serve themselves of them also: and I will
recompense them according to their deeds, and according to the works of their own hands.
For many nations and
great kings will
enslave them, and I will repay them according to their deeds and according to the work of their hands.’”
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, evil shall go forth from nation to nation, and a
great whirlwind shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth.
This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Behold!
Disaster is spreading from nation to nation; a mighty storm is rising from the ends of the earth.”
Did
Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him at all to death? did he not fear the LORD, and
besought the LORD, and the LORD
repented him of the evil which he had pronounced against them? Thus might we
procure great evil against our souls.
Did
Hezekiah king of Judah or
anyone else in Judah put him to death? Did
Hezekiah not fear the LORD and seek His favor, and did not the LORD relent of the
disaster He had pronounced against them? But we are about to bring
great harm on ourselves!”
I have made the earth, the man and the beast that are upon the ground, by my great power and by my outstretched arm, and have given it unto whom it seemed meet unto me.
By My great power and outstretched arm, I made the earth and the men and beasts on the face of it, and I give it to whom I please.
And all nations shall serve him, and his son, and his son’s son, until the very time of his land come: and then many nations and great kings shall serve themselves of him.
All nations will serve him and his son and grandson, until the time of his own land comes; then many nations and
great kings will
enslave him.
The prophets that have been before me and before thee of old
prophesied both against many countries, and against
great kingdoms, of war, and of evil, and of
pestilence.
The prophets of old who preceded you and me
prophesied war,
disaster, and plague against many lands and
great kingdoms.
Alas! for that day is
great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob’s trouble; but he shall be saved out of it.
How
awful that day will be! None will be like it! It is the time of Jacob’s distress, but he will be saved out of it.
All thy lovers have forgotten thee; they seek thee not; for I have wounded thee with the wound of an enemy, with the
chastisement of a cruel one, for the multitude of thine iniquity; because thy sins were increased.
All your lovers have forgotten you; they no longer seek you, for I have struck you as an enemy would, with the discipline of someone cruel, because of your great iniquity and your numerous sins.
Why criest thou for thine
affliction? thy sorrow is incurable for the multitude of thine iniquity: because thy sins were increased, I have done these things unto thee.
Why do you cry out over your wound? Your pain has no cure! Because of your great iniquity and your numerous sins I have done these things to you.
Behold, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the coasts of the earth, and with them the blind and the
lame, the woman with child and her that travaileth with child together: a
great company shall return thither.
Behold, I will bring them from the land of the north and gather them from the
farthest parts of the earth, including the blind and the
lame,
expectant mothers and women in labor. They will return as a
great assembly!
Thus saith the LORD; A voice was heard in
Ramah,
lamentation, and bitter
weeping;
Rahel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not.
This is what the LORD says: “A voice is heard in
Ramah,
mourning and
great weeping,
Rachel weeping for her children, and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.”
Is Ephraim my
dear son? is he a pleasant child? for since I spake against him, I do earnestly remember him still: therefore my
bowels are troubled for him; I will surely have mercy upon him, saith the LORD.
Is not Ephraim a precious son to Me, a delightful child? Though I often speak against him, I still remember him. Therefore My heart yearns for him; I have
great compassion for him,” declares the LORD.
And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the
greatest of them, saith the LORD; for I will
forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
No longer will each man teach his
neighbor or his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ because they will all know Me, from the least of them to the
greatest, declares the LORD. For I will
forgive their
iniquities and will remember their sins no more.”
Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy
great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:
“Oh, Lord GOD! You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too difficult for You!
Thou shewest lovingkindness unto thousands, and recompensest the iniquity of the fathers into the
bosom of their children after them: the
Great, the Mighty God, the LORD of hosts, is his name,
You show loving devotion to thousands but lay the iniquity of the fathers into the laps of their children after them, O great and mighty God whose name is the LORD of Hosts,
Great in counsel, and mighty in work: for thine eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men: to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:
the One great in counsel and mighty in deed, whose eyes are on all the ways of the sons of men, to reward each one according to his ways and according to the fruit of his deeds.
And hast brought forth thy people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs, and with wonders, and with a strong hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with great terror;
You brought Your people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs and wonders, with a strong hand and an outstretched arm, and with great terror.
Behold, I will gather them out of all countries,
whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my
fury, and in
great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely:
I will surely gather My people from all the lands to which I have banished them in My
furious anger and
great wrath, and I will return them to this place and make them dwell in safety.
For thus saith the LORD; Like as I have brought all this great evil upon this people, so will I bring upon them all the good that I have promised them.
For this is what the LORD says: Just as I have brought all this
great disaster on this people, so I will bring on them all the good I have promised them.
Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and
shew thee
great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.
Call to Me, and I will answer and show you great and unsearchable things you do not know.
