And Jacob came out of the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said, Thou must come in unto me; for surely I have
hired thee with my son’s mandrakes. And he lay with her that night.
When Jacob came in from the field that evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, “You must come with me, for I have
hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” So he
slept with her that night.
And Leah said, God hath given me my
hire, because I have given my
maiden to my husband: and she called his name
Issachar.
Then Leah said, “God has rewarded me for giving my
maidservant to my husband.” So she named him
Issachar.
I will pass through all thy flock to day, removing from thence all the
speckled and
spotted cattle, and all the brown cattle among the sheep, and the
spotted and
speckled among the goats: and of such shall be my
hire.
Let me go through all your flocks
today and remove from them every
speckled or
spotted sheep, every dark-colored lamb, and every
spotted or
speckled goat. These will be my wages.
So shall my righteousness answer for me in time to come, when it shall come for my
hire before thy face: every one that is not
speckled and
spotted among the goats, and brown among the sheep, that shall be counted
stolen with me.
So my
honesty will
testify for me when you come to check on my wages in the future. If I have any goats that are not
speckled or
spotted, or any lambs that are not dark-colored, they will be considered
stolen.”
If he said, ‘The
speckled will be your wages,’ then the whole flock bore
speckled offspring. If he said, ‘The
streaked will be your wages,’ then the whole flock bore
streaked offspring.
And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.
About that time, Judah left his brothers and settled near a man named Hirah, an Adullamite.
And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah’s wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.
After a long time Judah’s wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had finished
mourning, he and his friend
Hirah the Adullamite went up to his sheepshearers at Timnah.
And Judah sent the
kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his
pledge from the woman’s hand: but he found her not.
Now when Judah sent his friend Hirah the Adullamite with the young goat to collect the items he had left with the woman, he could not find her.
And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no
harlot in this place.
So
Hirah returned to Judah and said, “I could not find her, and
furthermore, the men of that place said, ‘No
shrine prostitute has been here.’”
A foreigner and an
hired servant shall not eat thereof.
But if the owner thereof be with it, he shall not make it good: if it be an
hired thing, it came for his
hire.
If the owner was present, no
restitution is required. If the animal was rented, the fee covers the loss.
Thou shalt not
defraud thy neighbour, neither
rob him: the wages of him that is
hired shall not
abide with thee all night until the morning.
There shall no stranger eat of the holy thing: a
sojourner of the priest, or an
hired servant, shall not eat of the holy thing.
No one outside a priest’s family may eat the sacred offering, nor may the
guest of a priest or his
hired hand eat it.
And the sabbath of the land shall be meat for you; for thee, and for thy servant, and for thy
maid, and for thy
hired servant, and for thy stranger that sojourneth with thee,
But as an
hired servant, and as a
sojourner, he shall be with thee, and shall serve thee unto the year of jubile:
Let him stay with you as a
hired worker or temporary resident; he is to work for you until the Year of
Jubilee.
And he shall
reckon with him that bought him from the year that he was sold to him unto the year of jubile: and the price of his sale shall be according unto the number of years, according to the time of an
hired servant shall it be with him.
He and his purchaser will then count the time from the year he sold himself up to the Year of
Jubilee. The price of his sale will be determined by the number of years, based on the daily wages of a
hired hand.
And as a yearly
hired servant shall he be with him: and the other shall not rule with rigour over him in thy sight.
He shall be treated like a man
hired from year to year, but a foreign owner must not rule over him harshly in your sight.
It shall not seem hard unto thee, when thou sendest him away free from thee; for he hath been worth a double
hired servant to thee, in serving thee six years: and the LORD thy God shall
bless thee in all that thou doest.
Do not regard it as a
hardship to set your servant free, because his six years of service were worth twice the wages of a
hired hand. And the LORD your God will
bless you in all you do.
Because they met you not with bread and with water in the way, when ye came forth out of Egypt; and because they
hired against thee
Balaam the son of Beor of
Pethor of
Mesopotamia, to
curse thee.
For they did not meet you with food and water on your way out of Egypt, and they
hired Balaam son of Beor from
Pethor in
Aram-naharaim to
curse you.
Thou shalt not bring the
hire of a
whore, or the price of a dog, into the house of the LORD thy God for any
vow: for even both these are
abomination unto the LORD thy God.
You must not bring the wages of a
prostitute, whether female or male, into the house of the LORD your God to
fulfill any
vow, because both are
detestable to the LORD your God.
Thou shalt not
oppress an
hired servant that is poor and
needy, whether he be of thy brethren, or of thy strangers that are in thy land within thy gates:
Do not
oppress a
hired hand who is poor and
needy, whether he is a brother or a foreigner residing in one of your towns.
At his day thou shalt give him his
hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and setteth his heart upon it: lest he cry against thee unto the LORD, and it be sin unto thee.
You are to pay his wages each day before
sunset, because he is poor and depends on them. Otherwise he may cry out to the LORD against you, and you will be guilty of sin.
So they gave him seventy shekels of silver from the temple of
Baal-berith, with which
Abimelech hired some worthless and
reckless men to follow him.
And he said unto them, Thus and thus dealeth
Micah with me, and hath
hired me, and I am his priest.
“
Micah has done this and that for me,” he replied, “and he has
hired me to be his priest.”
They that were full have
hired out themselves for bread; and they that were
hungry ceased: so that the barren hath born seven; and she that hath many children is waxed feeble.
The well-fed
hire themselves out for food, but the
starving hunger no more. The barren woman gives birth to seven, but she who has many sons pines away.
And
Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and
cedar trees, and carpenters, and masons: and they built David an house.
Now
Hiram king of Tyre sent envoys to David, along with
cedar logs, carpenters, and stonemasons, and they built a palace for David.
And when the children of
Ammon saw that they
stank before David, the children of
Ammon sent and
hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob, and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand
footmen, and of king
Maacah a thousand men, and of
Ish-
tob twelve thousand men.
When the
Ammonites realized that they had become a
stench to David, they
hired twenty thousand
Aramean foot soldiers from Beth-rehob and Zoba, as well as a thousand men from the king of
Maacah and twelve thousand men from
Tob.
And
Absalom came to the king, and said, Behold now, thy servant hath sheepshearers; let the king, I
beseech thee, and his servants go with thy servant.
And he went to the king and said, “Your servant has just
hired shearers. Will the king and his servants please come with me?”
And
Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants unto Solomon; for he had heard that they had
anointed him king in the room of his father: for
Hiram was ever a lover of David.
Now when
Hiram king of Tyre heard that Solomon had been
anointed king in his father’s place, he sent envoys to Solomon; for
Hiram had always been a friend of David.
And Solomon sent to
Hiram, saying,
And Solomon relayed this message to
Hiram:
Now therefore command thou that they
hew me
cedar trees out of
Lebanon; and my servants shall be with thy servants: and unto thee will I give
hire for thy servants according to all that thou shalt
appoint: for thou knowest that there is not among us any that can skill to
hew timber like unto the Sidonians.
Now therefore, order that cedars of
Lebanon be cut down for me. My servants will be with your servants, and I will pay your servants whatever wages you set, for you know that there are none among us as skilled in
logging as the Sidonians.”
And it came to pass, when
Hiram heard the words of Solomon, that he
rejoiced greatly, and said, Blessed be the LORD this day, which hath given unto David a wise son over this great people.
When
Hiram received Solomon’s message, he
rejoiced greatly and said, “Blessed be the LORD this day! He has given David a wise son over this great people!”
And
Hiram sent to Solomon, saying, I have considered the things which thou sentest to me for: and I will do all thy desire concerning timber of
cedar, and concerning timber of
fir.
Then
Hiram sent a reply to Solomon, saying: “I have received your message; I will do all you desire regarding the
cedar and
cypress timber.
So
Hiram gave Solomon
cedar trees and
fir trees according to all his desire.
And Solomon gave
Hiram twenty thousand measures of wheat for food to his household, and twenty measures of pure oil: thus gave Solomon to
Hiram year by year.
and year after year Solomon would provide
Hiram with 20,000 cors of wheat as food for his household, as well as 20,000 baths of pure olive oil.
And the LORD gave Solomon wisdom, as he promised him: and there was peace between
Hiram and Solomon; and they two made a league together.
And the LORD gave Solomon wisdom, as He had promised him. There was peace between
Hiram and Solomon, and the two of them made a treaty.
And Solomon’s builders and
Hiram’s builders did
hew them, and the stonesquarers: so they prepared timber and stones to build the house.
So Solomon’s and
Hiram’s builders, along with the Gebalites,
quarried the stone and prepared the timber and stone for the construction of the temple.
Now King Solomon sent to bring Huram from Tyre.
And
Hiram made the lavers, and the shovels, and the basons. So
Hiram made an end of doing all the work that he made king Solomon for the house of the LORD:
Additionally, Huram made the pots, shovels, and
sprinkling bowls. So Huram finished all the work that he had undertaken for King Solomon in the house of the LORD:
And the pots, and the shovels, and the basons: and all these vessels, which
Hiram made to king Solomon for the house of the LORD, were of bright brass.
and the pots, shovels, and
sprinkling bowls. All the articles that Huram made for King Solomon in the house of the LORD were made of
burnished bronze.
(Now
Hiram the king of Tyre had furnished Solomon with
cedar trees and
fir trees, and with gold, according to all his desire,) that then king Solomon gave
Hiram twenty cities in the land of
Galilee.
King Solomon gave twenty towns in the land of
Galilee to
Hiram king of Tyre, who had supplied him with
cedar and
cypress logs and gold for his every desire.
And
Hiram came out from Tyre to see the cities which Solomon had given him; and they pleased him not.
So
Hiram went out from Tyre to
inspect the towns that Solomon had given him, but he was not pleased with them.
And he said, What cities are these which thou hast given me, my brother? And he called them the land of
Cabul unto this day.
“What are these towns you have given me, my brother?” asked
Hiram, and he called them the Land of
Cabul, as they are called to this day.
And
Hiram had sent the king 120 talents of gold.
And
Hiram sent in the navy his servants,
shipmen that had knowledge of the sea, with the servants of Solomon.
And
Hiram sent his servants, men who knew the sea, to serve in the fleet with Solomon’s servants.
For the king had at sea a navy of Tharshish with the navy of
Hiram: once in three years came the navy of Tharshish, bringing gold, and silver, ivory, and apes, and peacocks.
For the king had the ships of
Tarshish at sea with
Hiram’s fleet, and once every three years the ships of
Tarshish would arrive bearing gold, silver, ivory, apes, and peacocks.
For the Lord had made the host of the Syrians to hear a noise of
chariots, and a noise of horses, even the noise of a great host: and they said one to another, Lo, the king of Israel hath
hired against us the kings of the
Hittites, and the kings of the Egyptians, to come upon us.
For the Lord had caused the Arameans to hear the sound of
chariots, horses, and a great army, so that they said to one another, “Look, the king of Israel must have
hired the kings of the
Hittites and Egyptians to attack us.”
Now
Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and timber of cedars, with masons and carpenters, to build him an house.
Now
Hiram king of Tyre sent envoys to David, along with
cedar logs, stonemasons, and carpenters, to build a palace for him.
And when the children of
Ammon saw that they had made themselves
odious to David, Hanun and the children of
Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to
hire them
chariots and
horsemen out of
Mesopotamia, and out of Syria-maachah, and out of Zobah.
So they
hired thirty and two thousand
chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. And the children of
Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.
So they
hired for themselves thirty-two thousand
chariots, as well as the king of
Maacah with his troops, who came and camped near Medeba while the
Ammonites came from their cities and marched out for battle.
And Solomon sent to Huram the king of Tyre, saying, As thou
didst deal with David my father, and
didst send him cedars to build him an house to dwell therein, even so deal with me.
Then Solomon sent word to
Hiram king of Tyre: “Do for me as you did for my father David when you sent him cedars to build himself a house to live in.
Then Huram the king of Tyre answered in writing, which he sent to Solomon, Because the LORD hath loved his people, he hath made thee king over them.
Then
Hiram king of Tyre wrote a letter in reply to Solomon: “Because the LORD loves His people, He has set you over them as king.”
Huram said moreover, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, that made heaven and earth, who hath given to David the king a wise son,
endued with
prudence and understanding, that might build an house for the LORD, and an house for his kingdom.
And
Hiram added: “Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who made the heavens and the earth! He has given King David a wise son with insight and understanding, who will build a temple for the LORD and a royal palace for himself.
That the cities which Huram had restored to Solomon, Solomon built them, and caused the children of Israel to dwell there.
Solomon rebuilt the cities
Hiram had given him and settled Israelites there.
And Huram sent him by the hands of his servants ships, and servants that had knowledge of the sea; and they went with the servants of Solomon to
Ophir, and took thence four hundred and fifty talents of gold, and brought them to king Solomon.
So
Hiram sent him ships captained by his servants, along with crews of experienced sailors. They went with Solomon’s servants to
Ophir and acquired from there 450 talents of gold, which they delivered to King Solomon.
And the servants also of Huram, and the servants of Solomon, which brought gold from
Ophir, brought
algum trees and precious stones.
(The servants of
Hiram and of Solomon who brought gold from
Ophir also brought
algum wood and precious stones.
For the king’s ships went to
Tarshish with the servants of Huram: every three years once came the ships of
Tarshish bringing gold, and silver, ivory, and apes, and peacocks.
For the king had the ships of
Tarshish that went with
Hiram’s servants, and once every three years the ships of
Tarshish would arrive bearing gold, silver, ivory, apes, and peacocks.
And the king and Jehoiada gave it to such as did the work of the service of the house of the LORD, and
hired masons and carpenters to repair the house of the LORD, and also such as wrought iron and brass to
mend the house of the LORD.
Then the king and Jehoiada would give the money to those who
supervised the labor on the house of the LORD to
hire stonecutters and carpenters to restore the house of the LORD, as well as workers in iron and bronze to repair the house of the LORD.
He
hired also an hundred thousand mighty men of valour out of Israel for an hundred talents of silver.
He also
hired 100,000 mighty warriors from Israel for a hundred talents of silver.
And
hired counsellors against them, to
frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of
Darius king of Persia.
They
hired counselors against them to
frustrate their plans throughout the reign of Cyrus king of Persia and down to the reign of
Darius king of Persia.
And, lo, I perceived that God had not sent him; but that he pronounced this prophecy against me: for
Tobiah and
Sanballat had
hired him.
I realized that God had not sent him, but that he had uttered this prophecy against me because
Tobiah and
Sanballat had
hired him.
Therefore was he
hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report, that they might reproach me.
He had been
hired to
intimidate me so that I would sin by doing as he suggested, so they could give me a bad name in order to discredit me.
Because they met not the children of Israel with bread and with water, but
hired Balaam against them, that he should
curse them:
howbeit our God turned the
curse into a blessing.
because they had not met the Israelites with food and water, but had
hired Balaam to call down a
curse against them (although our God had turned the
curse into a blessing).
Is there not an appointed time to man upon earth? are not his days also like the days of an
hireling?
“Is not man
consigned to labor on earth? Are not his days like those of a
hired hand?
As a servant earnestly desireth the shadow, and as an
hireling looketh for the reward of his work:
Like a slave he longs for shade; like a
hireling he waits for his wages.
look away from him and let him rest, so he can enjoy his day as a
hired hand.
The great God that formed all things both rewardeth the
fool, and rewardeth transgressors.
In the same day shall the Lord
shave with a
razor that is
hired, namely, by them beyond the river, by the king of Assyria, the head, and the hair of the feet: and it shall also
consume the
beard.
On that day the Lord will use a
razor hired from beyond the Euphrates—the king of Assyria—to
shave your head and the hair of your legs, and to remove your
beard as well.
But now the LORD hath spoken, saying, Within three years, as the years of an
hireling, and the glory of Moab shall be
contemned, with all that great multitude; and the
remnant shall be very small and feeble.
And now the LORD says, “In three years, as a
hired worker counts the years, Moab’s
splendor will become an object of contempt, with all her many people. And those who are left will be few and feeble.”
And they shall be broken in the purposes thereof, all that make sluices and ponds for fish.
The workers in cloth will be
dejected, and all the
hired workers will be sick at heart.
For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Within a year, according to the years of an
hireling, and all the glory of
Kedar shall fail:
For this is what the Lord says to me: “Within one year, as a
hired worker would count it, all the glory of
Kedar will be gone.
And it shall come to pass after the end of seventy years, that the LORD will visit Tyre, and she shall turn to her
hire, and shall commit
fornication with all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of the earth.
And at the end of seventy years, the LORD will restore Tyre. Then she will return to
hire as a
prostitute and sell herself to all the kingdoms on the face of the earth.
Yet her profits and wages will be set apart to the LORD; they will not be stored or saved, for her profit will go to those who live before the LORD, for abundant food and fine clothing.
They pour out their bags of gold and
weigh out silver on scales; they
hire a
goldsmith to fashion it into a god, so they can bow down and worship.
Also her
hired men are in the midst of her like
fatted bullocks; for they also are turned back, and are fled away together: they did not stand, because the day of their
calamity was come upon them, and the time of their
visitation.
Even the
mercenaries among her are like
fattened calves. They too will turn back; together they will
flee, they will not stand their ground, for the day of
calamity is coming upon them— the time of their punishment.
In that thou buildest thine eminent place in the head of every way, and makest thine high place in every street; and hast not been as an
harlot, in that thou scornest
hire;
But when you built your mounds at the head of every street and made your lofty shrines in every public square, you were not even like a
prostitute, because you
scorned payment.
They give gifts to all whores: but thou givest thy gifts to all thy lovers, and
hirest them, that they may come unto thee on every side for thy
whoredom.
Men give gifts to all their prostitutes, but you gave gifts to all your lovers. You
bribed them to come to you from everywhere for your
illicit favors.
And they shall burn thine houses with fire, and
execute judgments upon thee in the sight of many women: and I will cause thee to cease from playing the
harlot, and thou also shalt give no
hire any more.
Then they will burn down your houses and
execute judgment against you in the sight of many women. I will put an end to your
prostitution, and you will never again pay your lovers.
For they are gone up to Assyria, a wild
ass alone by himself: Ephraim hath
hired lovers.
For they have gone up to Assyria like a wild
donkey on its own. Ephraim has
hired lovers.
Yea, though they have
hired among the nations, now will I gather them, and they shall sorrow a little for the burden of the king of princes.
Though they
hire allies among the nations, I will now round them up, and they will begin to diminish under the oppression of the king of princes.
Rejoice not, O Israel, for joy, as other people: for thou hast gone a
whoring from thy God, thou hast loved a reward upon every
cornfloor.
And all the
graven images thereof shall be beaten to pieces, and all the
hires thereof shall be burned with the fire, and all the idols thereof will I lay
desolate: for she gathered it of the
hire of an
harlot, and they shall return to the
hire of an
harlot.
All her carved images will be
smashed to pieces; all her wages will be burned in the fire, and I will destroy all her idols. Since she collected the wages of a
prostitute, they will be used again on a
prostitute.
The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for
hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they
lean upon the LORD, and say, Is not the LORD among us? none evil can come upon us.
Her leaders judge for a
bribe, her priests teach for a price, and her prophets practice
divination for money. Yet they
lean upon the LORD, saying, “Is not the LORD among us? No
disaster can come upon us.”
For before these days there was no
hire for man, nor any
hire for beast; neither was there any peace to him that went out or came in because of the
affliction: for I set all men every one against his neighbour.
For before those days neither man nor beast received wages, nor was there safety from the enemy for
anyone who came or went, for I had turned every man against his
neighbor.
And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that
oppress the
hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts.
“Then I will draw near to you for judgment. And I will be a swift witness against sorcerers and adulterers and perjurers, against oppressors of the widowed and fatherless, and against those who
defraud laborers of their wages and deny justice to the foreigner but do not fear Me,” says the LORD of Hosts.
For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to
hire labourers into his
vineyard.
“For the kingdom of heaven is like a
landowner who went out early in the morning to
hire workers for his
vineyard.
They say unto him, Because no man hath
hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the
vineyard; and
whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive.
‘Because no one has
hired us,’ they answered. So he told them, ‘You also go into my
vineyard.’
So when even was come, the lord of the
vineyard saith unto his
steward, Call the labourers, and give them their
hire, beginning from the last unto the first.
When evening came, the owner of the
vineyard said to his
foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, starting with the last ones
hired and moving on to the first.’
And when they came that were
hired about the
eleventh hour, they received every man a
penny.
Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day.
‘These men who were
hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the
scorching heat of the day.’
And
straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the
hired servants, and went after him.
Immediately Jesus called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the
hired men and followed Him.
And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his
hire. Go not from house to house.
Stay at the same house, eating and drinking whatever you are offered. For the worker is worthy of his wages. Do not move around from house to house.
And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed
swine.
So he went and
hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed the pigs.
And when he came to himself, he said, How many
hired servants of my father’s have bread enough and to
spare, and I perish with hunger!
Finally he came to his senses and said, ‘How many of my father’s
hired servants have
plenty of food? But here I am,
starving to death!
And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy
hired servants.
I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your
hired servants.”’
But he that is an
hireling, and not the
shepherd, whose own the sheep are not,
seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.
The
hired hand is not the
shepherd, and the sheep are not his own. When he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf pounces on them and scatters the flock.
The man runs away because he is a
hired servant and is unconcerned for the sheep.
And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own
hired house, and received all that came in unto him,
Paul stayed there two full years in his own rented house,
welcoming all who came to visit him.
Behold, the
hire of the labourers who have
reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by
fraud, crieth: and the
cries of them which have
reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of
sabaoth.
Look, the wages you
withheld from the workmen who
mowed your fields are crying out against you. The
cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts.
