And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil. And now, lest he reach out his
hand and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live
forever...”
And now art thou
cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy
hand;
Now you are
cursed and banished from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your
hand.
And his brother’s name was
Jubal: he was the father of all such as
handle the
harp and organ.
And his brother’s name was
Jubal; he was the father of all who play the
harp and
flute.
And he called his name
Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and
toil of our
hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath
cursed.
And he named him
Noah, saying, “May this one comfort us in the labor and
toil of our
hands caused by the ground that the LORD has
cursed.”
But the
dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned unto him into the ark, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth: then he put forth his
hand, and took her, and pulled her in unto him into the ark.
But the
dove found no place to rest her foot, and she returned to him in the ark, because the waters were still covering the surface of all the earth. So he reached out his
hand and brought her back inside the ark.
And the fear of you and the
dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your
hand are they delivered.
The fear and
dread of you will fall on every living creature on the earth, every bird of the air, every creature that crawls on the ground, and all the fish of the sea. They are delivered into your
hand.
And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man.
And surely I will require the life of any man or beast by whose
hand your
lifeblood is shed. I will demand an accounting from
anyone who takes the life of his fellow man:
Is not the whole land before thee? separate
thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou
wilt take the left
hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right
hand, then I will go to the left.
Is not the whole land before you? Now separate
yourself from me. If you go to the left, I will go to the right; if you go to the right, I will go to the left.”
And he divided himself against them, he and his servants, by night, and
smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left
hand of Damascus.
During the night,
Abram divided his forces and routed
Chedorlaomer’s army, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.
And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy
hand. And he gave him
tithes of all.
and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your
hand.” Then
Abram gave
Melchizedek a tenth of everything.
And
Abram said to the king of
Sodom, I have lift up mine
hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the
possessor of heaven and earth,
But
Abram replied to the king of
Sodom, “I have raised my
hand to the LORD God Most High,
Creator of heaven and earth,
Now Sarai
Abram’s wife bare him no children: and she had an
handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was
Hagar.
But
Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy
maid is in thy
hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.
“Here,” said
Abram, “your servant is in your
hands. Do whatever you want with her.” Then Sarai treated
Hagar so harshly that she fled from her.
And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy
mistress, and submit
thyself under her
hands.
So the angel of the LORD told her, “Return to your
mistress and submit to her authority.”
And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.
He will be a wild
donkey of a man, and his
hand will be against
everyone, and
everyone’s
hand against him; he will live in hostility toward all his brothers.”
But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door.
But the men inside reached out, pulled Lot into the house with them, and shut the door.
And while he
lingered, the men laid hold upon his
hand, and upon the
hand of his wife, and upon the
hand of his two daughters; the LORD being
merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.
But when Lot
hesitated, the men
grabbed his
hand and the
hands of his wife and his two daughters. And they led them safely out of the city, because of the LORD’s
compassion for them.
Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the
integrity of my heart and
innocency of my
hands have I done this.
Didn’t Abraham tell me, ‘She is my sister’? And she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ I have done this in the
integrity of my heart and the
innocence of my
hands.”
Arise, lift up the
lad, and hold him in thine
hand; for I will make him a great nation.
Get up, lift up the boy, and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.”
And he said, For these seven
ewe lambs shalt thou take of my
hand, that they may be a witness unto me, that I have
digged this well.
He replied, “You are to accept the seven
ewe lambs from my
hand as my witness that I
dug this well.”
And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.
Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac. He himself carried the fire and the
sacrificial knife, and the two of them walked on together.
And Abraham stretched forth his
hand, and took the knife to
slay his son.
Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.
And he said, Lay not thine
hand upon the
lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not
withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
“Do not lay a
hand on the boy or do anything to him,” said the angel, “for now I know that you fear God, since you have not
withheld your only son from me.”
And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy
hand under my
thigh:
So Abraham
instructed the chief servant of his household, who managed all he owned, “Place your
hand under my
thigh,
And the servant put his
hand under the
thigh of Abraham his master, and
sware to him concerning that matter.
So the servant placed his
hand under the
thigh of his master Abraham and
swore an oath to him concerning this matter.
And the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master, and departed; for all the goods of his master were in his
hand: and he arose, and went to
Mesopotamia, unto the city of
Nahor.
Then the servant took ten of his master’s camels and departed with all manner of good things from his master in
hand. And he set out for
Nahor’s hometown in
Aram-naharaim.
And she said, Drink, my lord: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink.
“Drink, my lord,” she replied, and she quickly lowered her
jar to her
hands and gave him a drink.
And it came to pass, as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden
earring of half a
shekel weight, and two bracelets for her
hands of ten shekels weight of gold;
And after the camels had finished drinking, he took out a gold ring weighing a beka, and two gold bracelets for her wrists weighing ten shekels.
And it came to pass, when he saw the
earring and bracelets upon his sister’s
hands, and when he heard the words of
Rebekah his sister, saying, Thus spake the man unto me; that he came unto the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels at the well.
As soon as he saw the ring, and the bracelets on his sister’s wrists, and heard
Rebekah’s words, “The man said this to me,” he went and found the man standing by the camels near the spring.
And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she said, The daughter of
Bethuel,
Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bare unto him: and I put the
earring upon her face, and the bracelets upon her
hands.
Then I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ She replied, ‘The daughter of
Bethuel son of
Nahor, whom Milcah bore to him.’ So I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her wrists.
And now if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me: and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left.
Now if you will show kindness and faithfulness to my master, tell me; but if not, let me know, so that I may go elsewhere.”
And after that came his brother out, and his
hand took hold on
Esau’s
heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was
threescore years old when she bare them.
After this, his brother came out
grasping Esau’s
heel; so he was named Jacob. And Isaac was sixty years old when the twins were born.
And she put the skins of the kids of the goats upon his hands, and upon the smooth of his neck:
She also put the skins of the young goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck.
And she gave the savoury meat and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob.
Then she
handed her son Jacob the
tasty food and bread she had made.
And Jacob went near unto Isaac his father; and he felt him, and said, The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the
hands are the
hands of
Esau.
So Jacob came close to his father Isaac, who touched him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the
hands are the
hands of
Esau.”
And he
discerned him not, because his
hands were
hairy, as his brother
Esau’s
hands: so he blessed him.
Isaac did not recognize him, because his
hands were
hairy like those of his brother
Esau; so he blessed him.
And
Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing
wherewith his father blessed him: and
Esau said in his heart, The days of
mourning for my father are at
hand; then will I
slay my brother Jacob.
Esau held a
grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him. And
Esau said in his heart, “The days of
mourning for my father are at
hand; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”
And she gave him
Bilhah her
handmaid to wife: and Jacob went in unto her.
And he removed that day the he goats that were
ringstraked and
spotted, and all the she goats that were
speckled and
spotted, and every one that had some white in it, and all the brown among the sheep, and gave them into the
hand of his sons.
That very day
Laban removed all the
streaked or
spotted male goats and every
speckled or
spotted female goat—every one that had any white on it—and every dark-colored lamb, and he placed them under the care of his sons.
It is in the power of my
hand to do you
hurt: but the God of your father spake unto me
yesternight, saying, Take thou
heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.
I have power to do you great
harm, but last night the God of your father said to me, ‘Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.’
That which was
torn of beasts I brought not unto thee; I bare the loss of it; of my
hand didst thou require it, whether
stolen by day, or
stolen by night.
I did not bring you anything
torn by wild beasts; I bore the loss myself. And you demanded payment from me for what was
stolen by day or night.
Except the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely thou hadst sent me away now empty. God hath seen mine
affliction and the labour of my
hands, and
rebuked thee
yesternight.
If the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac, had not been with me, surely by now you would have sent me away empty-
handed. But God has seen my
affliction and the
toil of my
hands, and last night He rendered judgment.”
Deliver me, I pray thee, from the
hand of my brother, from the
hand of
Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and
smite me, and the mother with the children.
Please deliver me from the
hand of my brother
Esau, for I am afraid that he may come and attack me and the mothers and children with me.
And he
lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his
hand a present for
Esau his brother;
Jacob spent the night there, and from what he had brought with him, he selected a gift for his brother
Esau:
And he delivered them into the
hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space
betwixt drove and drove.
He entrusted them to his servants in separate herds and told them, “Go on
ahead of me, and keep some distance between the herds.”
And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold,
Esau came, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children unto Leah, and unto
Rachel, and unto the two
handmaids.
Now Jacob looked up and saw
Esau coming toward him with four hundred men. So he divided the children among Leah,
Rachel, and the two maidservants.
And he put the
handmaids and their children foremost, and Leah and her children after, and
Rachel and Joseph
hindermost.
He put the maidservants and their children in front, Leah and her children next, and
Rachel and Joseph at the rear.
Then the handmaidens came near, they and their children, and they bowed themselves.
Then the maidservants and their children approached and bowed down.
And Jacob said,
Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found grace in thy sight, then receive my present at my
hand: for therefore I have seen thy face, as though I had seen the face of God, and thou
wast pleased with me.
But Jacob insisted, “No, please! If I have found favor in your sight, then receive this gift from my
hand. For indeed, I have seen your face, and it is like seeing the face of God, since you have received me
favorably.
And he bought a
parcel of a field, where he had spread his tent, at the
hand of the children of Hamor,
Shechem’s father, for an hundred pieces of money.
And the plot of ground where he pitched his tent, he purchased from the sons of Hamor,
Shechem’s father, for a hundred pieces of silver.
And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their
hand, and all their earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob
hid them under the oak which was by
Shechem.
So they gave Jacob all their foreign gods and all their earrings, and Jacob buried them under the oak near
Shechem.
And the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s
handmaid;
Gad, and Asher: these are the sons of Jacob, which were born to him in Padan-
aram.
And the sons of Leah’s
maidservant Zilpah were
Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob, who were born to him in Paddan-
aram.
And
Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their
hands; and said, Let us not kill him.
When
Reuben heard this, he tried to
rescue Joseph from their
hands. “Let us not take his life,” he said.
And
Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no
hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their
hands, to deliver him to his father again.
“Do not shed his blood. Throw him into this pit in the wilderness, but do not lay a
hand on him.”
Reuben said this so that he could
rescue Joseph from their
hands and return him to his father.
Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content.
Come, let us sell him to the
Ishmaelites and not lay a
hand on him; for he is our brother, our own flesh.” And they agreed.
And he said, What
pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy
signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine
hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.
“What
pledge should I give you?” he asked. She answered, “Your seal and your cord, and the staff in your
hand.” So he gave them to her and
slept with her, and she became
pregnant by him.
And Judah sent the
kid by the
hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his
pledge from the woman’s
hand: but he found her not.
Now when Judah sent his friend Hirah the Adullamite with the young goat to collect the items he had left with the woman, he could not find her.
And it came to pass, when she
travailed, that the one put out his
hand: and the
midwife took and bound upon his
hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first,
And as she was giving birth, one of them put out his
hand; so the
midwife took a scarlet thread and
tied it around his
wrist. “This one came out first,” she
announced.
And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.
But when he pulled his
hand back and his brother came out, she said, “You have broken out first!” So he was named
Perez.
And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zarah.
Then his brother came out with the scarlet thread around his
wrist, and he was named Zerah.
And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down thither.
Meanwhile, Joseph had been taken down to Egypt, where an Egyptian named Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard, bought him from the
Ishmaelites who had taken him there.
And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to
prosper in his
hand.
When his master saw that the LORD was with him and made him
prosper in all he did,
And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him
overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his
hand.
Joseph found favor in his sight and became his personal
attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household and entrusted him with everything he owned.
And he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured.
So Potiphar left all that he owned in Joseph’s care; he did not
concern himself with anything except the food he
ate. Now Joseph was well-built and
handsome,
But he refused, and said unto his master’s wife, Behold, my master
wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my
hand;
But he refused. “Look,” he said to his master’s wife, “with me here, my master does not
concern himself with anything in his house, and he has entrusted everything he owns to my care.
And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.
She
grabbed Joseph by his
cloak and said, “Sleep with me!” But leaving his
cloak in her
hand, he escaped and ran outside.
And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth,
When she saw that he had left his
cloak in her
hand and had run out of the house,
And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s
hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and
whatsoever they did there, he was the
doer of it.
And the
warden put all the prisoners under Joseph’s care, so that he was responsible for all that was done in the prison.
The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his
hand; because the LORD was with him, and that which he did, the LORD made it to
prosper.
The
warden did not
concern himself with anything under Joseph’s care, because the LORD was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.
And Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand: and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand.
Pharaoh’s cup was in my
hand, and I took the grapes,
squeezed them into his cup, and placed the cup in his
hand.”
Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thine head, and restore thee unto thy place: and thou shalt deliver Pharaoh’s cup into his
hand, after the former manner when thou
wast his
butler.
Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore your position. You will put Pharaoh’s cup in his
hand, just as you did when you were his
cupbearer.
And he restored the chief
butler unto his
butlership again; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh’s
hand:
Pharaoh restored the chief
cupbearer to his position, so that he once again placed the cup in Pharaoh’s
hand.
And let them gather all the food of those good years that come, and lay up corn under the hand of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities.
Under the authority of Pharaoh, let them collect all the excess food from these good years, that they may come and lay up the grain to be preserved as food in the cities.
And Pharaoh took off his ring from his
hand, and put it upon Joseph’s
hand, and
arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck;
Then Pharaoh removed the
signet ring from his finger, put it on Joseph’s finger, clothed him in garments of fine linen, and placed a gold chain around his neck.
And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I am Pharaoh, and without thee shall no man lift up his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.
And Pharaoh declared to Joseph, “I am Pharaoh, but without your permission, no one in all the land of Egypt shall lift his hand or foot.”
And in the seven
plenteous years the earth brought forth by
handfuls.
During the seven years of abundance, the land brought forth
bountifully.
And
Reuben spake unto his father, saying,
Slay my two sons, if I bring him not to thee: deliver him into my
hand, and I will bring him to thee again.
Then
Reuben said to his father, “You may kill my two sons if I fail to bring him back to you. Put him in my care, and I will return him.”
I will be
surety for him; of my
hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the
blame for ever:
I will
guarantee his safety. You may hold me personally responsible. If I do not bring him back and set him before you, then may I bear the guilt before you all my life.
And take double money in your
hand; and the money that was brought again in the mouth of your sacks, carry it again in your
hand;
peradventure it was an oversight:
Take double the silver with you so that you may return the silver that was put back into the mouths of your sacks. Perhaps it was a mistake.
And the men took that present, and they took double money in their hand, and Benjamin; and rose up, and went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph.
So the men took these gifts, along with double the amount of silver, and Benjamin as well. Then they
hurried down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.
And it came to pass, when we came to the inn, that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man’s money was in the mouth of his
sack, our money in full weight: and we have brought it again in our
hand.
But when we came to the place we
lodged for the night, we opened our sacks and, behold, each of us found his silver in the mouth of his
sack! It was the full amount of our silver, and we have brought it back with us.
And other money have we brought down in our
hands to
buy food: we cannot tell who put our money in our sacks.
We have brought additional silver with us to
buy food. We do not know who put our silver in our sacks.”
And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the earth.
When Joseph came home, they presented him with the gifts they had brought, and they bowed to the ground before him.
And he said, God
forbid that I should do so: but the man in whose
hand the cup is found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, get you up in peace unto your father.
But Joseph replied, “Far be it from me to do this. The man who was found with the cup will be my slave. The rest of you may return to your father in peace.”
I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again: and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes.
I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will surely bring you back. And Joseph’s own hands will close your eyes.”
And the time drew
nigh that Israel must die: and he called his son Joseph, and said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, put, I pray thee, thy
hand under my
thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me;
bury me not, I pray thee, in Egypt:
When the time drew near for Israel to die, he called his son Joseph and said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes, put your
hand under my
thigh and promise to show me kindness and faithfulness. Do not
bury me in Egypt,
And Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right
hand toward Israel’s left
hand, and
Manasseh in his left
hand toward Israel’s right
hand, and brought them near unto him.
And Joseph took both of them—with Ephraim in his right
hand toward Israel’s left
hand, and
Manasseh in his left
hand toward Israel’s right
hand—and brought them close to him.
And Israel stretched out his right
hand, and laid it upon Ephraim’s head, who was the younger, and his left
hand upon
Manasseh’s head, guiding his
hands wittingly; for
Manasseh was the
firstborn.
But Israel stretched out his right
hand and put it on the head of Ephraim, the younger; and crossing his
hands, he put his left on
Manasseh’s head, although
Manasseh was the
firstborn.
And when Joseph saw that his father laid his right
hand upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him: and he held up his father’s
hand, to remove it from Ephraim’s head unto
Manasseh’s head.
When Joseph saw that his father had placed his right
hand on Ephraim’s head, he was displeased and took his father’s
hand to move it from Ephraim’s head to
Manasseh’s.
And Joseph said unto his father, Not so, my father: for this is the
firstborn; put thy right
hand upon his head.
“Not so, my father!” Joseph said. “This one is the
firstborn; put your right
hand on his head.”
Moreover I have given to thee one portion above thy brethren, which I took out of the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow.
And to you, as one who is above your brothers, I give the ridge of land that I took from the
Amorites with my sword and bow.”
Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise: thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; thy father’s children shall bow down before thee.
Judah, your brothers shall praise you. Your hand shall be on the necks of your enemies; your father’s sons shall bow down to you.
But his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his
hands were made strong by the
hands of the mighty God of Jacob; (from thence is the
shepherd, the stone of Israel:)
Yet he
steadied his bow, and his strong arms were tempered by the
hands of the Mighty One of Jacob, in the name of the
Shepherd, the Rock of Israel,
And they said, An Egyptian delivered us out of the
hand of the
shepherds, and also drew water enough for us, and watered the flock.
“An Egyptian
rescued us from the
shepherds,” they replied. “He even drew water for us and watered the flock.”
And I am come down to deliver them out of the
hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the
Canaanites, and the
Hittites, and the
Amorites, and the
Perizzites, and the
Hivites, and the Jebusites.
And I am sure that the king of Egypt will not let you go, no, not by a mighty hand.
But I know that the king of Egypt will not allow you to go unless a mighty hand compels him.
