Therefore
Sarah laughed within
herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?
So she
laughed to
herself, saying, “After I am worn out and my master is old, will I now have this pleasure?”
Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she
herself said, He is my brother: in the
integrity of my heart and
innocency of my hands have I done this.
Didn’t Abraham tell me, ‘She is my sister’? And she
herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ I have done this in the
integrity of my heart and the
innocence of my hands.”
For she had said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master: therefore she took a
vail, and covered
herself.
and asked the servant, “Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?” “It is my master,” the servant answered. So she took her
veil and covered
herself.
And she put her widow’s garments off from her, and covered her with a
vail, and
wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.
she removed her widow’s garments, covered her face with a
veil to
disguise herself, and sat at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah. For she saw that although Shelah had grown up, she had not been given to him as a wife.
And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the
harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by
whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.
About three months later, Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar has
prostituted herself, and now she is
pregnant.” “Bring her out!” Judah replied. “Let her be burned to death!”
And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash
herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river’s side; and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent her
maid to
fetch it.
Soon the daughter of Pharaoh went down to
bathe in the Nile, and her attendants were walking along the riverbank. And when she saw the
basket among the reeds, she sent her
maidservant to
retrieve it.
But if she be
cleansed of her issue, then she shall number to
herself seven days, and after that she shall be clean.
When a woman is
cleansed of her discharge, she must count off seven days, and after that she will be
ceremonially clean.
And the daughter of any priest, if she
profane herself by playing the
whore, she profaneth her father: she shall be burnt with fire.
If a priest’s daughter defiles
herself by
prostituting herself, she profanes her father; she must be burned in the fire.
And the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be
jealous of his wife, and she be
defiled: or if the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be
jealous of his wife, and she be not
defiled:
and if a feeling of jealousy comes over her husband and he suspects his wife who has
defiled herself—or if a feeling of jealousy comes over him and he suspects her even though she has not
defiled herself—
And when he hath made her to drink the water, then it shall come to pass, that, if she be
defiled, and have done
trespass against her husband, that the water that causeth the
curse shall enter into her, and become bitter, and her
belly shall swell, and her
thigh shall
rot: and the woman shall be a
curse among her people.
When he has made her drink the water, if she has
defiled herself and been unfaithful to her husband, then the water that brings a
curse will enter her and cause bitter suffering; her
belly will swell, her
thigh will
shrivel, and she will become
accursed among her people.
And if the woman be not
defiled, but be clean; then she shall be free, and shall conceive seed.
But if the woman has not
defiled herself and is clean, she will be unaffected and able to conceive children.
This is the law of
jealousies, when a wife goeth aside to another instead of her husband, and is
defiled;
This is the law of jealousy when a wife goes
astray and defiles
herself while under her husband’s authority,
And when the
ass saw the angel of the LORD, she thrust
herself unto the wall, and
crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall: and he
smote her again.
And the
donkey saw the angel of the LORD and pressed
herself against the wall,
crushing Balaam’s foot against it. So he beat her once again.
If a woman also
vow a
vow unto the LORD, and bind
herself by a bond, being in her father’s house in her youth;
And if a woman in her father’s house during her youth makes a
vow to the LORD or obligates
herself by a
pledge,
And her father hear her
vow, and her bond
wherewith she hath bound her soul, and her father shall hold his peace at her: then all her vows shall stand, and every bond
wherewith she hath bound her soul shall stand.
and her father hears about her
vow or
pledge but says nothing to her, then all the vows or pledges by which she has bound
herself shall stand.
But if her father disallow her in the day that he heareth; not any of her vows, or of her bonds
wherewith she hath bound her soul, shall stand: and the LORD shall
forgive her, because her father disallowed her.
But if her father prohibits her on the day he hears about it, then none of the vows or pledges by which she has bound
herself shall stand. The LORD will
absolve her because her father has prohibited her.
And if she had at all an husband, when she
vowed, or uttered ought out of her lips,
wherewith she bound her soul;
If a woman marries while under a
vow or
rash promise by which she has bound
herself,
And her husband heard it, and held his peace at her in the day that he heard it: then her vows shall stand, and her bonds
wherewith she bound her soul shall stand.
and her husband hears of it but says nothing to her on that day, then the vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand.
And if she
vowed in her husband’s house, or bound her soul by a bond with an oath;
If a woman in her husband’s house has made a
vow or put
herself under an obligation with an oath,
And her husband heard it, and held his peace at her, and disallowed her not: then all her vows shall stand, and every bond
wherewith she bound her soul shall stand.
and her husband hears of it but says nothing to her and does not
prohibit her, then all the vows or pledges by which she has bound
herself shall stand.
Every
vow, and every binding oath to
afflict the soul, her husband may establish it, or her husband may make it void.
Her wise ladies answered her,
yea, she returned answer to
herself,
Her wisest ladies answer; indeed she keeps telling herself,
Then she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and said unto him, Why have I found grace in thine eyes, that thou shouldest take knowledge of me, seeing I am a stranger?
At this, she fell on her face, bowing low to the ground, and said to him, “Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you should take notice of me, even though I am a foreigner?”
And his daughter in law,
Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the
tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed
herself and
travailed; for her pains came upon her.
Now
Eli’s daughter-in-law, the wife of
Phinehas, was
pregnant and about to give birth. When she heard the news of the capture of God’s ark and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband, she
collapsed and gave birth, for her labor pains overtook her.
And when
Abigail saw David, she hasted, and lighted off the
ass, and fell before David on her face, and bowed
herself to the ground,
When
Abigail saw David, she quickly got off the
donkey, fell facedown, and bowed before him.
And she arose, and bowed
herself on her face to the earth, and said, Behold, let thine
handmaid be a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.
She arose, then bowed facedown and said, “Here is your
maidservant, ready to serve and to wash the feet of my lord’s servants.”
And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.
One evening David got up from his bed and
strolled around on the roof of the palace. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing—a very beautiful woman.
And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was
purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house.
Then David sent messengers to get her, and when she came to him, he
slept with her. (Now she had just
purified herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned home.
And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took
sackcloth, and spread it for her upon the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water dropped upon them out of heaven, and suffered neither the birds of the air to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night.
And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took
sackcloth and spread it out for
herself on a rock. From the beginning of the harvest until the rain from heaven poured down on the bodies, she did not allow the birds of the air to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night.
And the sister of Tahpenes bare him Genubath his son, whom Tahpenes
weaned in Pharaoh’s house: and Genubath was in Pharaoh’s household among the sons of Pharaoh.
And the sister of Tahpenes bore
Hadad a son named Genubath. Tahpenes
herself weaned him in Pharaoh’s palace, and Genubath lived there among the sons of Pharaoh.
And the LORD said unto
Ahijah, Behold, the wife of
Jeroboam cometh to ask a thing of thee for her son; for he is sick: thus and thus shalt thou say unto her: for it shall be, when she cometh in, that she shall
feign herself to be another woman.
But the LORD had said to
Ahijah, “Behold, the wife of
Jeroboam is coming to ask you about her son, for he is ill. You are to say such and such to her, because when she arrives, she will be
disguised.”
Then she went in, and fell at his feet, and bowed herself to the ground, and took up her son, and went out.
She came in, fell at his feet, and bowed to the ground. Then she
picked up her son and went out.
What time she lifteth up herself on high, she scorneth the horse and his rider.
Yet when she proudly spreads her wings, she laughs at the horse and its rider.
Yea, the
sparrow hath found an house, and the
swallow a nest for
herself, where she may lay her young, even thine altars, O LORD of hosts, my King, and my God.
Even the
sparrow has found a home, and the
swallow a nest for
herself, where she places her young near Your altars, O LORD of Hosts, my King and my God.
She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.
She girds herself with strength and shows that her arms are strong.
She maketh
herself coverings of
tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.
She makes coverings for her bed; her clothing is fine linen and purple.
Therefore
hell hath enlarged
herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their
pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.
Therefore
Sheol enlarges its throat and opens wide its enormous jaws, and down go
Zion’s nobles and masses, her revelers and carousers!
And it shall come to pass after the end of seventy years, that the LORD will visit Tyre, and she shall turn to her
hire, and shall commit
fornication with all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of the earth.
And at the end of seventy years, the LORD will restore Tyre. Then she will return to
hire as a
prostitute and sell
herself to all the kingdoms on the face of the earth.
The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the wild beasts of the island, and the
satyr shall cry to his fellow; the
screech owl also shall rest there, and find for
herself a place of rest.
The desert creatures will meet with
hyenas, and one wild goat will call to another. There the night creature will settle and find her place of
repose.
Therefore hear now this, thou that art given to pleasures, that dwellest
carelessly, that sayest in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children:
So now hear this, O lover of
luxury who sits securely, who says to
herself, ‘I am, and there is none besides me. I will never be a widow or know the loss of children.’
I will greatly
rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the
robe of righteousness, as a
bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a
bride adorneth
herself with her jewels.
I will
rejoice greatly in the LORD, my soul will
exult in my God; for He has clothed me with garments of salvation and
wrapped me in a
robe of righteousness, as a
bridegroom wears a priestly
headdress, as a
bride adorns
herself with her jewels.
The LORD said also unto me in the days of
Josiah the king, Hast thou seen that which
backsliding Israel hath done? she is gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there hath played the
harlot.
Now in the days of King
Josiah, the LORD said to me, “Have you seen what faithless Israel has done? She has gone up on every high hill and under every green tree to
prostitute herself there.
And I saw, when for all the causes whereby
backsliding Israel committed
adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of
divorce; yet her
treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the
harlot also.
She saw that because faithless Israel had committed
adultery, I gave her a
certificate of
divorce and sent her away. Yet that unfaithful sister Judah had no fear and
prostituted herself as well.
And the LORD said to me, “Faithless Israel has shown herself more righteous than unfaithful Judah.
For I have heard a voice as of a woman in
travail, and the
anguish as of her that bringeth forth her first child, the voice of the daughter of
Zion, that bewaileth
herself, that spreadeth her hands, saying,
Woe is me now! for my soul is
wearied because of murderers.
For I hear a cry like a woman in labor, a cry of
anguish like one bearing her first child— the cry of the Daughter of
Zion gasping for breath, stretching out her hands to say, “
Woe is me, for my soul
faints before the murderers!”
Damascus is waxed feeble, and turneth
herself to
flee, and fear hath seized on her:
anguish and sorrows have taken her, as a woman in
travail.
Damascus has become feeble; she has turned to
flee.
Panic has gripped her;
anguish and pain have seized her like a woman in labor.
The ways of
Zion do
mourn, because none come to the solemn feasts: all her gates are
desolate: her priests
sigh, her virgins are
afflicted, and she is in bitterness.
The roads to
Zion mourn, because no one comes to her appointed feasts. All her gates are deserted; her priests
groan, her maidens
grieve, and she
herself is bitter with
anguish.
Jerusalem hath
grievously sinned; therefore she is removed: all that honoured her
despise her, because they have seen her nakedness:
yea, she sigheth, and turneth backward.
Jerusalem has
sinned greatly; therefore she has become an object of
scorn. All who honored her now
despise her, for they have seen her nakedness; she
herself groans and turns away.
Then say thou, Thus saith the Lord GOD, The city sheddeth blood in the midst of it, that her time may come, and maketh idols against
herself to
defile herself.
and tell her that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘O city who brings her own
doom by
shedding blood within her walls and making idols to
defile herself,
And Aholah played the
harlot when she was mine; and she
doted on her lovers, on the Assyrians her neighbours,
Oholah
prostituted herself while she was still Mine. She
lusted after her lovers, the Assyrians—warriors
Thus she committed her whoredoms with them, with all them that were the chosen men of Assyria, and with all on whom she
doted: with all their idols she
defiled herself.
She offered sexual favors to all the
elite of Assyria. She
defiled herself with all the idols of those for whom she
lusted.
Then I saw that she was
defiled, that they took both one way,
And I saw that she too had
defiled herself; both of them had taken the same path.
So she discovered her whoredoms, and discovered her nakedness: then my mind was
alienated from her, like as my mind was
alienated from her sister.
When Oholibah openly
prostituted herself and exposed her nakedness, I turned away from her in
disgust, just as I had turned away from her sister.
Yet she multiplied her whoredoms, in calling to
remembrance the days of her youth, wherein she had played the
harlot in the land of Egypt.
Yet she multiplied her
promiscuity, remembering the days of her youth, when she had
prostituted herself in the land of Egypt
She hath
wearied herself with lies, and her great
scum went not forth out of her: her
scum shall be in the fire.
It has
frustrated every effort; its thick
rust has not been removed, even by the fire.
And I will visit upon her the days of
Baalim, wherein she burned incense to them, and she decked
herself with her earrings and her jewels, and she went after her lovers, and
forgat me, saith the LORD.
I will
punish her for the days of the Baals when she burned incense to them, when she decked
herself with rings and
jewelry, and went after her lovers. But Me she
forgot,” declares the LORD.
This is the
rejoicing city that dwelt
carelessly, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none beside me: how is she become a
desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss, and
wag his hand.
This carefree city that dwells securely, that thinks to
herself: “I am it, and there is none besides me,” what a ruin she has become, a resting place for beasts.
Everyone who passes by her hisses and shakes his
fist.
And Tyrus did build
herself a strong hold, and
heaped up silver as the dust, and fine gold as the
mire of the streets.
Tyre has built
herself a fortress; she has
heaped up silver like dust, and gold like the
dirt of the streets.
For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole.
She said to
herself, “If only I touch His
cloak, I will be
healed.”
For the earth bringeth forth fruit of
herself; first the
blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear.
All by itself the earth produces a crop—first the
stalk, then the head, then grain that ripens within.
And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and
hid herself five months, saying,
After these days, his wife Elizabeth became
pregnant and for five months remained in
seclusion. She declared,
And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of
infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up
herself.
and a woman there had been disabled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was
hunched over and could not stand up straight.
And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.
When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there; but she did not recognize that it was Jesus.
Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.
Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).
Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have
lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints’ feet, if she have relieved the
afflicted, if she have
diligently followed every good work.
and well known for good deeds such as bringing up children,
entertaining strangers, washing the feet of the saints, imparting relief to the
afflicted, and
devoting herself to every good work.
Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.
By faith
Sarah, even though she was barren and beyond the proper age, was enabled to conceive a child, because she considered Him faithful who had promised.
Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman
Jezebel, which calleth
herself a
prophetess, to teach and to
seduce my servants to commit
fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.
But I have this against you: You
tolerate that woman
Jezebel, who calls
herself a
prophetess. By her teaching she misleads My servants to be sexually immoral and to eat food sacrificed to idols.
How much she hath
glorified herself, and lived
deliciously, so much
torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.
As much as she has
glorified herself and lived in
luxury, give her the same measure of
torment and grief. In her heart she says, ‘I sit as queen; I am not a widow and will never see grief.’
Let us be
glad and
rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made
herself ready.
Let us
rejoice and be
glad and give Him the glory. For the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His
bride has made
herself ready.
So shall righteousness
hate iniquity, when she decketh
herself, and shall
accuse her to her face, when he cometh that shall defend him that
diligently searcheth out every sin upon earth.
Whe she heard these things, she was very sorrowful, so that she thought to have
strangled herself; and she said, I am the only daughter of my father, and if I do this, it shall be a reproach unto him, and I shall bring his old age with sorrow unto the grave.
And pulled off the
sackcloth which she had on, and put off the garments of her
widowhood, and washed her body all over with water, and
anointed herself with precious
ointment, and
braided the hair of her head, and put on a
tire upon it, and put on her garments of
gladness,
wherewith she was
clad during the life of Manasses her husband.
And she took
sandals upon her feet, and put about her her bracelets, and her chains, and her rings, and her earrings, and all her ornaments, and decked
herself bravely, to
allure the eyes of all men that should see her.
Then Holofernes commanded his guard that they should not stay her: thus she abode in the camp three days, and went out in the night into the valley of Bethulia, and washed herself in a fountain of water by the camp.
So she arose, and decked
herself with her
apparel and all her woman’s
attire, and her
maid went and laid soft skins on the ground for her over against Holofernes, which she had received of Bagoas for her daily use, that she might sit and eat upon them.
Then lifting up his countenance that
shone with majesty, he looked very fiercely upon her: and the queen fell down, and was pale, and
fainted, and bowed
herself upon the head of the
maid that went before her.
Then God changed the spirit of the king into mildness, who in a fear
leaped from his throne, and took her in his arms, till she came to
herself again, and comforted her with loving words and said unto her,
She preventeth them that desire her, in making herself first known unto them.
For she goeth about seeking such as are worthy of her, sheweth herself favourably unto them in the ways, and meeteth them in every thought.
And being but one, she can do all things: and remaining in herself, she maketh all things new: and in all ages entering into holy souls, she maketh them friends of God, and prophets.
Wisdom shall praise herself, and shall glory in the midst of her people.
If thy daughter be shameless, keep her in straitly, lest she
abuse herself through overmuch liberty.
In her
virginity, lest she should be
defiled and
gotten with child in her father’s house; and having an husband, lest she should
misbehave herself; and when she is married, lest she should be barren.
The women also with cords about them, sitting in the ways, burn
bran for
perfume: but if any of them, drawn by some that passeth by, lie with him, she reproacheth her fellow, that she was not thought as worthy as
herself, nor her cord broken.
And it fell out, as they watched a fit time, she went in as before with two maids only, and she was
desirous to wash
herself in the garden: for it was hot.
But she bowing
herself toward him,
laughing the cruel
tyrant to
scorn, spake in her country language on this manner; O my son, have
pity upon me that bare thee nine months in my
womb, and gave thee such three years, and
nourished thee, and brought thee up unto this age, and
endured the troubles of education.
