hither, but God: and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all
his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.

his brethren, and
wept upon them: and after that

Then Joseph sent his brothers on their way, and as they were leaving, he said to them, “Do not quarrel on the way!”
And Israel took
his journey with all that he had, and came to Beer-
sheba, and offered sacrifices unto the God of
his father Isaac.

Beersheba, he offered sacrifices to the God of
his father Isaac.
I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again: and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes.
I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will surely bring you back. And Joseph’s own hands will close your eyes.”

And he sent Judah before him unto Joseph, to direct
his face unto
Goshen; and they came into the land of
Goshen.
Now Jacob had sent Judah
ahead of him to Joseph to get directions to
Goshen. When Jacob’s family arrived in the land of
Goshen,
And Joseph made ready
his chariot, and went up to meet Israel
his father, to
Goshen, and presented himself unto him; and he fell on
his neck, and
wept on
his neck a good while.
Joseph prepared
his chariot and went there to meet
his father Israel. Joseph presented himself to him, embraced him, and
wept profusely.
And Joseph said unto
his brethren, and unto
his father’s house, I will go up, and
shew Pharaoh, and say unto him, My brethren, and my father’s house, which were in the land of
Canaan, are come unto me;
Joseph said to
his brothers and to
his father’s household, “I will go up and inform Pharaoh: ‘My brothers and my father’s household from the land of
Canaan have come to me.

his brethren, What is your occupation? And they said unto Pharaoh, Thy servants are

And Joseph placed
his father and
his brethren, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of

nourished his father, and

And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years: so the whole age of Jacob was an hundred forty and seven years.
And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years, and the length of his life was 147 years.
And the time drew
nigh that Israel must die: and he called
his son Joseph, and said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, put, I pray thee, thy hand under my
thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me;
bury me not, I pray thee, in Egypt:
When the time drew near for Israel to die, he called
his son Joseph and said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes, put your hand under my
thigh and promise to show me kindness and faithfulness. Do not
bury me in Egypt,
And he said,
Swear unto me. And he
sware unto him. And Israel bowed himself upon the bed’s head.
“
Swear to me,” Jacob said. So Joseph
swore to him, and Israel bowed in worship at the head of
his bed.
And it came to pass after these things, that one told Joseph, Behold, thy father is sick: and he took with him
his two sons,
Manasseh and Ephraim.
Some time later Joseph was told, “Your father is ill.” So he set out with
his two sons,
Manasseh and Ephraim.
And one told Jacob, and said, Behold, thy son Joseph cometh unto thee: and Israel strengthened himself, and sat upon the bed.
When Jacob was told, “Your son Joseph has come to you,” Israel
rallied his strength and sat up in bed.
And Joseph said unto
his father, They are my sons, whom God hath given me in this place. And he said, Bring them, I pray thee, unto me, and I will
bless them.
Joseph said to
his father, “They are the sons God has given me in this place.” So Jacob said, “Please bring them to me, that I may
bless them.”
Now the eyes of Israel were
dim for age, so that he could not see. And he brought them near unto him; and he
kissed them, and embraced them.
Now Israel’s
eyesight was poor because of old age; he could hardly see. Joseph brought
his sons to him, and
his father
kissed them and embraced them.
And Joseph brought them out from between his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth.
Then Joseph removed his sons from his father’s knees and bowed facedown.
And Joseph took them both, Ephraim in
his right hand toward Israel’s left hand, and
Manasseh in
his left hand toward Israel’s right hand, and brought them near unto him.
And Joseph took both of them—with Ephraim in
his right hand toward Israel’s left hand, and
Manasseh in
his left hand toward Israel’s right hand—and brought them close to him.
And Israel stretched out
his right hand, and laid it upon Ephraim’s head, who was the younger, and
his left hand upon
Manasseh’s head, guiding
his hands
wittingly; for
Manasseh was the
firstborn.
But Israel stretched out
his right hand and put it on the head of Ephraim, the younger; and crossing
his hands, he put
his left on
Manasseh’s head, although
Manasseh was the
firstborn.
And when Joseph saw that
his father laid
his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him: and he held up
his father’s hand, to remove it from Ephraim’s head unto
Manasseh’s head.
When Joseph saw that
his father had placed
his right hand on Ephraim’s head, he was displeased and took
his father’s hand to move it from Ephraim’s head to
Manasseh’s.
And Joseph said unto
his father, Not so, my father: for this is the
firstborn; put thy right hand upon
his head.
“Not so, my father!” Joseph said. “This one is the
firstborn; put your right hand on
his head.”
And his father refused, and said, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations.
But his father refused. “I know, my son, I know!” he said. “He too shall become a people, and he too shall be great; nevertheless, his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his offspring shall become a multitude of nations.”
And Jacob called unto
his sons, and said, Gather
yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall
befall you in the last days.
Then Jacob called for his sons and said, “Gather around so that I can tell you what will happen to you in the days to come:
The
sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a
lawgiver from between
his feet, until
Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.
The
scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the staff from between
his feet, until
Shiloh comes and the allegiance of the nations is
his.
Binding
his foal unto the vine, and
his ass’s
colt unto the choice vine; he washed
his garments in wine, and
his clothes in the blood of grapes:
He
ties his donkey to the vine,
his colt to the choicest branch. He washes
his garments in wine,
his robes in the blood of grapes.
His eyes shall be red with wine, and his teeth white with milk.
His eyes are darker than wine, and his teeth are whiter than milk.
Zebulun shall dwell at the
haven of the sea; and he shall be for an
haven of ships; and
his border shall be unto Zidon.
And he saw that rest was good, and the land that it was pleasant; and bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant unto tribute.
He saw that his resting place was good and that his land was pleasant, so he bent his shoulder to the burden and submitted to labor as a servant.
Dan shall judge
his people, as one of the tribes of Israel.
Dan shall provide justice for
his people as one of the tribes of Israel.
Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path, that biteth the horse heels, so that
his rider shall fall backward.
He will be a
snake by the road, a
viper in the path that bites the horse’s heels so that its rider tumbles backward.
Out of Asher
his bread shall be fat, and he shall yield royal
dainties.
Asher’s food will be rich; he shall provide royal
delicacies.
But
his bow abode in strength, and the arms of
his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; (from thence is the
shepherd, the stone of Israel:)
Yet he
steadied his bow, and
his strong arms were tempered by the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob, in the name of the
Shepherd, the Rock of Israel,
The blessings of thy father have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors unto the utmost bound of the
everlasting hills: they shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him that was separate from
his brethren.
The blessings of your father have surpassed the blessings of the ancient mountains and the
bounty of the
everlasting hills. May they rest on the head of Joseph, on the
brow of the prince of
his brothers.
All these are the twelve tribes of Israel: and this is it that their father spake unto them, and blessed them; every one according to his blessing he blessed them.
These are the tribes of Israel, twelve in all, and this was what their father said to them. He blessed them, and he blessed each one with a suitable blessing.
There they buried Abraham and
Sarah his wife; there they buried Isaac and
Rebekah his wife; and there I buried Leah.
There Abraham and
his wife
Sarah are buried, there Isaac and
his wife
Rebekah are buried, and there I buried Leah.
And when Jacob had made an end of commanding his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, and yielded up the ghost, and was gathered unto his people.

instructing his sons, he pulled
his feet into the bed and breathed
his last, and he was gathered to
his people.
And Joseph fell upon
his father’s face, and
wept upon him, and
kissed him.
Then Joseph fell upon
his father’s face,
wept over him, and
kissed him.
And Joseph commanded
his servants the physicians to
embalm his father: and the physicians
embalmed Israel.
And Joseph directed the physicians in
his service to
embalm his father Israel. So they
embalmed him,
And when the days of
his mourning were past, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,
When the days of
mourning had passed, Joseph said to Pharaoh’s court, “If I have found favor in your eyes, please tell Pharaoh that
And Joseph went up to
bury his father: and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of
his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,
Then Joseph went to
bury his father, and all the servants of Pharaoh accompanied him—the elders of Pharaoh’s household and all the elders of the land of Egypt—
And all the house of Joseph, and
his brethren, and
his father’s house: only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of
Goshen.
along with all of Joseph’s household, and
his brothers, and
his father’s household. Only their children and flocks and herds were left in
Goshen.
And they came to the threshingfloor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan, and there they
mourned with a great and very
sore lamentation: and he made a
mourning for
his father seven days.
When they reached the
threshing floor of Atad, which is across the Jordan, they
lamented and
wailed loudly, and Joseph
mourned for
his father seven days.
And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them:
So Jacob’s sons did as he had charged them.
For
his sons carried him into the land of
Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a buryingplace of Ephron the Hittite, before
Mamre.
They carried him to the land of
Canaan and buried him in the cave at Machpelah in the field near
Mamre, which Abraham had purchased from Ephron the Hittite as a burial site.
And Joseph returned into Egypt, he, and
his brethren, and all that went up with him to
bury his father, after he had buried
his father.
After Joseph had buried
his father, he returned to Egypt with
his brothers and all who had gone with him to
bury his father.
And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy servants.
His brothers also came to him, bowed down before him, and said, “We are your slaves!”
Now therefore fear ye not: I will
nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them.
Therefore do not be afraid. I will provide for you and your little ones.” So Joseph
reassured his brothers and spoke kindly to them.
And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father’s house: and Joseph lived an hundred and ten years.
Now Joseph and his father’s household remained in Egypt, and Joseph lived to the age of 110.
And Joseph said unto
his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he
sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.
Then Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die, but God will surely visit you and bring you up from this land to the land He promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”
So Joseph died, being an hundred and ten years old: and they
embalmed him, and he was put in a
coffin in Egypt.
So Joseph died at the age of 110. And they
embalmed his body and placed it in a
coffin in Egypt.
Now these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt; every man and his household came with Jacob.
These are the names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt with Jacob, each with his family:
And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.
Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died,
And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we:
“Look,” he said to his people, “the Israelites have become too numerous and too powerful for us.
And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.
Then Pharaoh commanded all his people: “Every son born to the Hebrews you must throw into the Nile, but every daughter you may allow to live.”
And
his sister stood
afar off, to wit what would be done to him.
And his sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him.
Then said
his sister to Pharaoh’s daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a
nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may
nurse the child for thee?
Then
his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call one of the Hebrew women to
nurse the child for you?”
And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water.
When the child had grown older, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses and explained, “I drew him out of the water.”
And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto
his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he
spied an Egyptian
smiting an Hebrew, one of
his brethren.
One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to his own people and observed their hard labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people.
And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he
slew the Egyptian, and
hid him in the sand.
After looking this way and that and seeing no one, he struck down the Egyptian and
hid his body in the sand.
And he said unto his daughters, And where is he? why is it that ye have left the man? call him, that he may eat bread.
“So where is he?” their father asked. “Why did you leave the man behind?
Invite him to have something to eat.”
And Moses was content to dwell with the man: and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter.
Moses agreed to stay with the man, and he gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses in marriage.
And she bare him a son, and he called his name Gershom: for he said, I have been a stranger in a strange land.
And she gave birth to a son, and Moses named him Gershom, saying, “I have become a foreigner in a foreign land.”
And God heard their
groaning, and God remembered
his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.
So God heard their
groaning, and He remembered
His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro
his father in law, the priest of
Midian: and he led the flock to the
backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to
Horeb.
Meanwhile, Moses was
shepherding the flock of
his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of
Midian. He led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to
Horeb, the mountain of God.
Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses
hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.
Then He said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses
hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.
And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?
Then Moses asked God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is His name?’ What should I tell them?”
And the LORD said unto Moses, Put forth thine hand, and take it by the tail. And he put forth his hand, and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand:
“Stretch out your hand and
grab it by the tail,” the LORD said to Moses, who reached out
his hand and caught the
snake, and it turned back into a staff in
his hand.
And the LORD said
furthermore unto him, Put now thine hand into thy
bosom. And he put
his hand into
his bosom: and when he took it out, behold,
his hand was
leprous as snow.
Furthermore, the LORD said to Moses, “Put your hand inside your
cloak.” So he put
his hand inside
his cloak, and when he took it out,
his hand was
leprous, white as snow.
And he said, Put thine hand into thy
bosom again. And he put
his hand into
his bosom again; and
plucked it out of
his bosom, and, behold, it was turned again as
his other flesh.
“Put your hand back inside your
cloak,” said the LORD. So Moses put
his hand back inside
his cloak, and when he took it out, it was restored, like the rest of
his skin.
And the LORD said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth? or who maketh the
dumb, or
deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD?
And the LORD said to him, “Who gave man
his mouth? Or who makes the
mute or the
deaf, the sighted or the blind? Is it not I, the LORD?
And the anger of the LORD was
kindled against Moses, and he said, Is not Aaron the
Levite thy brother? I know that he can speak well. And also, behold, he cometh forth to meet thee: and when he
seeth thee, he will be
glad in
his heart.
Then the anger of the LORD burned against Moses, and He said, “Is not Aaron the
Levite your brother? I know that he can speak well, and he is now on
his way to meet you. When he sees you, he will be
glad in
his heart.
And thou shalt speak unto him, and put words in his mouth: and I will be with thy mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what ye shall do.
You are to speak to him and put the words in his mouth. I will help both of you to speak, and I will teach you what to do.
And Moses went and returned to Jethro his father in law, and said unto him, Let me go, I pray thee, and return unto my brethren which are in Egypt, and see whether they be yet alive. And Jethro said to Moses, Go in peace.
Then Moses went back to his father-in-law Jethro and said to him, “Please let me return to my brothers in Egypt to see if they are still alive.” “Go in peace,” Jethro replied.
And Moses took
his wife and
his sons, and set them upon an
ass, and he returned to the land of Egypt: and Moses took the rod of God in
his hand.
So Moses took
his wife and sons, put them on a
donkey, and headed back to Egypt. And he took the staff of God in
his hand.
And the LORD said unto Moses, When thou goest to return into Egypt, see that thou do all those wonders before Pharaoh, which I have put in thine hand: but I will
harden his heart, that he shall not let the people go.
The LORD
instructed Moses, “When you go back to Egypt, see that you perform before Pharaoh all the wonders that I have put within your power. But I will
harden his heart so that he will not let the people go.
Then Zipporah took a sharp stone, and cut off the
foreskin of her son, and cast it at
his feet, and said, Surely a
bloody husband art thou to me.
But Zipporah took a flint knife, cut off her son’s
foreskin, and touched it to Moses’ feet. “Surely you are a
bridegroom of blood to me,” she said.
And Pharaoh said, Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go.
But Pharaoh replied, “Who is the LORD that I should obey His voice and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, and I will not let Israel go.”
And they said unto them, The LORD look upon you, and judge; because ye have made our savour to be
abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of
his servants, to put a sword in their hand to
slay us.
“May the LORD look upon you and judge you,” the
foremen said, “for you have made us a
stench before Pharaoh and
his officials; you have placed in their hand a sword to kill us!”
Then the LORD said unto Moses, Now shalt thou see what I will do to Pharaoh: for with a strong hand shall he let them go, and with a strong hand shall he drive them out of his land.
But the LORD said to Moses, “Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh, for because of My mighty hand he will let the people go; because of My strong hand he will drive them out of his land.”
Go in, speak unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, that he let the children of Israel go out of his land.
“Go and tell Pharaoh king of Egypt to let the Israelites go out of his land.”
And Amram took him Jochebed his father’s sister to wife; and she bare him Aaron and Moses: and the years of the life of Amram were an hundred and thirty and seven years.
And Amram married his father’s sister Jochebed, and she bore him Aaron and Moses. Amram lived 137 years.
Thou shalt speak all that I command thee: and Aaron thy brother shall speak unto Pharaoh, that he send the children of Israel out of his land.
You are to speak all that I command you, and your brother Aaron is to tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites go out of his land.
And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and they did so as the LORD had commanded: and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh, and before his servants, and it became a serpent.
So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the LORD had commanded. Aaron threw his staff down before Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a serpent.
