And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come
hither; I will
shew unto thee the
judgment of the great
whore that sitteth upon many waters:
Then one of the seven angels with the seven
bowls came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the punishment of the great
prostitute, who sits on many waters.
Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and
mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who
judgeth her.
Therefore her plagues will come in one day— death and grief and famine— and she will be consumed by fire, for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.”
Standing
afar off for the fear of her
torment, saying,
Alas,
alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy
judgment come.
In fear of her
torment, they will stand at a distance and cry out: “
Woe,
woe to the great city, the mighty city of Babylon! For in a single hour your
judgment has come.”
Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath
avenged you on her.
Rejoice over her, O heaven, O saints and apostles and prophets, because God has pronounced for you His
judgment against her.
For true and righteous are his
judgments: for he hath
judged the great
whore, which did corrupt the earth with her
fornication, and hath
avenged the blood of his servants at her hand.
For His
judgments are true and just. He has
judged the great
prostitute who corrupted the earth with her immorality. He has
avenged the blood of His servants that was poured out by her hand.”
And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he
doth judge and make war.
Then I saw heaven standing open, and there before me was a white horse. And its rider is called Faithful and True. With righteousness He judges and wages war.
And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and
judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were
beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
Then I saw the thrones, and those seated on them had been given authority to
judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been
beheaded for their testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image, and had not received its mark on their foreheads or hands. And they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.
And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne. And there were open books, and one of them was the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their deeds, as recorded in the books.
And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and
hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were
judged every man according to their works.
The sea gave up its dead, and Death and Hades gave up their dead, and each one was judged according to his deeds.
But the king of Egypt sent to him, saying, What have I to do with thee, O king of
Judea?
These things are written in the book of the stories of the kings of
Judah, and every one of the acts that Josias did, and his glory, and his understanding in the law of the Lord, and the things that he had done before, and the things now recited, are reported in the book of the kings of Israel and
Judea.
And he reigned in
Judea and in Jerusalem three months: and then the king of Egypt
deposed him from reigning in Jerusalem.
The king of Egypt also made king Joacim his brother king of
Judea and Jerusalem.
Five and twenty years old was Joacim when he was made king in the land of
Judea and Jerusalem; and he did evil before the Lord.
And made Zedechias king of
Judea and Jerusalem, when he was one and twenty years old; and he reigned eleven years:
If therefore there be any of you that are of his people, let the Lord, even his Lord, be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem that is in
Judea, and build the house of the Lord of Israel: for he is the Lord that dwelleth in Jerusalem.
Then the chief of the families of
Judea and of the tribe of Benjamin stood up; the priests also, and the Levites, and all they whose mind the Lord had moved to go up, and to build an house for the Lord at Jerusalem,
And by him they were delivered to Sanabassar the governor of
Judea.
But in the time of Artexerxes king of the Persians Belemus, and Mithridates, and Tabellius, and Rathumus, and Beeltethmus, and Semellius the secretary, with others that were in commission with them, dwelling in Samaria and other places, wrote unto him against them that dwelt in
Judea and Jerusalem these letters following;
To king Artexerxes our lord, Thy servants, Rathumus the storywriter, and Semellius the
scribe, and the rest of their council, and the
judges that are in Celosyria and Phenice.
And said that, when the king is risen, some will give him the writings; and of whose side the king and the three princes of Persia shall judge that his sentence is the wisest, to him shall the victory be given, as was appointed.
And sat him down in the royal seat of judgment; and the writings were read before them.
Neither in her judgment is any unrighteousness; and she is the strength, kingdom, power, and majesty, of all ages. Blessed be the God of truth.
Thou also hast
vowed to build up the temple, which the Edomites burned when
Judea was made
desolate by the Chaldees.
The priests, the sons of Phinees the son of Aaron: Jesus the son of Josedec, the son of Saraias, and Joacim the son of Zorobabel, the son of Salathiel, of the house of David, out of the kindred of Phares, of the tribe of Judah;
Wherefore when the enemies of the tribe of
Judah and Benjamin heard it, they came to know what that noise of
trumpets should mean.
But the heathen of the land lying heavy upon the inhabitants of
Judea, and holding them strait, hindered their building;
Let all things be known unto our lord the king, that being come into the country of
Judea, and entered into the city of Jerusalem we found in the city of Jerusalem the ancients of the Jews that were of the captivity
And also he commanded that Sisinnes the governor of Syria and Phenice, and Sathrabuzanes, and their companions, and those which were appointed rulers in Syria and Phenice, should be careful not to
meddle with the place, but suffer Zorobabel, the servant of the Lord, and governor of
Judea, and the elders of the Jews, to build the house of the Lord in that place.
For
Esdras had very great skill, so that he omitted nothing of the law and commandments of the Lord, but taught all Israel the ordinances and
judgments.
That they may look unto the affairs of
Judea and Jerusalem,
agreeably to that which is in the law of the Lord;
And thou,
Esdras, according to the wisdom of God
ordain judges and justices, that they may
judge in all Syria and Phenice all those that know the law of thy God; and those that know it not thou shalt teach.
And in three days were all they of the tribe of
Judah and Benjamin gathered together at Jerusalem the
twentieth day of the ninth month.
And with them the rulers and judges of every place, till we turn away the wrath of the Lord from us for this matter.
And of the Levites; Jozabad, and Semis, and Colius, who was called Calitas, and Patheus, and
Judas, and
Jonas.
What shall I do unto thee, O Jacob? thou, Juda, wouldest not obey me: I will turn me to other nations, and unto those will I give my name, that they may keep my statutes.
Do right to the widow,
judge for the fatherless, give to the poor, defend the
orphan,
clothe the naked,
Then answered he me, and said, Thou hast given a right
judgment, but why
judgest thou not
thyself also?
And I said, No, Lord: but of very grief have I spoken: for my
reins pain me every hour, while I labour to
comprehend the way of the most High, and to seek out part of his
judgment.
Then said he unto me, Like as thou canst do none of these things that I have spoken of, even so canst thou not find out my judgment, or in the end the love that I have promised unto my people.
And he said unto me, I will
liken my
judgment unto a ring: like as there is no
slackness of the last, even so there is no swiftness of the first.
So I answered and said, Couldest thou not make those that have been made, and be now, and that are for to come, at once; that thou mightest
shew thy
judgment the sooner?
And he said unto me. There is no judge above God, and none that hath understanding above the Highest.
And the world shall be turned into the old silence seven days, like as in the former judgments: so that no man shall remain.
And the most High shall appear upon the seat of judgment, and misery shall pass away, and the long suffering shall have an end:
But judgment only shall remain, truth shall stand, and faith shall wax strong:
And being
judge, if he should not
forgive them that are cured with his word, and put out the multitude of contentions,
Thou broughtest it up with thy righteousness, and nurturedst it in thy law, and reformedst it with thy judgment.
But I have heard the swiftness of the judge which is to come.
For indeed I will not think on the disposition of them which have
sinned before death, before
judgment, before destruction:
In that thou hast humbled
thyself, as it becometh thee, and hast not
judged thyself worthy to be much
glorified among the righteous.
And therefore is my judgment now at hand.
For the earth hast thou not judged with truth.
That all the earth may be refreshed, and may return, being delivered from thy violence, and that she may hope for the judgment and mercy of him that made her.
For thou hast
judged me worthy to
shew me the last times.
For he shall set them before him alive in
judgment, and shall
rebuke them, and correct them.
For the rest of my people shall he deliver with mercy, those that have been pressed upon my borders, and he shall make them joyful until the coming of the day of
judgment,
whereof I have spoken unto thee from the beginning.
And
forasmuch as he is a righteous
judge, he took from you in time the thing that he had given you.
For after death shall the judgment come, when we shall live again: and then shall the names of the righteous be manifest, and the works of the ungodly shall be declared.
Behold, God himself is the
judge, fear him: leave off from your sins, and
forget your
iniquities, to
meddle no more with them for ever: so shall God lead you forth, and deliver you from all trouble.
And if the king
Sennacherib had slain any, when he was come, and fled from
Judea, I buried them
privily; for in his wrath he killed many; but the bodies were not found, when they were sought for of the king.
O Lord, thou art just, and all thy works and all thy ways are mercy and truth, and thou judgest truly and justly for ever.
And now thy judgments are many and true: deal with me according to my sins and my fathers’: because we have not kept thy commandments, neither have walked in truth before thee.
Therefore Nabuchodonosor was very
angry with all this country, and
sware by his throne and kingdom, that he would surely be
avenged upon all those coasts of
Cilicia, and Damascus, and Syria, and that he would
slay with the sword all the inhabitants of the land of Moab, and the children of
Ammon, and all
Judea, and all that were in Egypt, till ye come to the borders of the two seas.
Now the children of Israel, that dwelt in
Judea, heard all that Holofernes the chief captain of Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians had done to the nations, and after what manner he had
spoiled all their temples, and brought them to
nought.
For they were newly returned from the captivity, and all the people of
Judea were lately gathered together: and the vessels, and the altar, and the house, were
sanctified after the
profanation.
Charging them to keep the passages of the hill country: for by them there was an entrance into
Judea, and it was easy to stop them that would come up, because the passage was straight, for two men at the most.
So God heard their prayers, and looked upon their afflictions: for the people fasted many days in all
Judea and Jerusalem before the sanctuary of the Lord
Almighty.
God be judge between us and you: for ye have done us great injury, in that ye have not required peace of the children of Assur.
Now at that time
Judith heard thereof, which was the daughter of Merari, the son of Ox, the son of Joseph, the son of Ozel, the son of Elcia, the son of
Ananias, the son of Gedeon, the son of Raphaim, the son of Acitho, the son of Eliu, the son of Eliab, the son of
Nathanael, the son of Samael, the son of Salasadal, the son of Israel.
So
Judith was a widow in her house three years and four months.
Now when she heard the evil words of the people against the governor, that they
fainted for lack of water; for
Judith had heard all the words that Ozias had spoken unto them, and that he had
sworn to deliver the city unto the Assyrians after five days;
For if we be taken so, all
Judea shall lie waste, and our sanctuary shall be
spoiled; and he will require the
profanation thereof at our mouth.
Then said
Judith unto them, Hear me, and I will do a thing, which shall go throughout all generations to the children of our nation.
Judith fell upon her face, and put ashes upon her head, and uncovered the
sackcloth wherewith she was clothed; and about the time that the incense of that evening was offered in Jerusalem in the house of the Lord
Judith cried with a loud voice, and said,
Yea, what things thou
didst determine were ready at hand, and said, Lo, we are here: for all thy ways are prepared, and thy
judgments are in thy
foreknowledge.
And when they had done so,
Judith went out, she, and her
maid with her; and the men of the city looked after her, until she was gone down the mountain, and till she had passed the valley, and could see her no more.
And when
Judith was come before him and his servants they all
marvelled at the beauty of her countenance; and she fell down upon her face, and did reverence unto him: and his servants took her up.
Then
Judith said unto him, Receive the words of thy servant, and suffer thine
handmaid to speak in thy presence, and I will declare no lie to my lord this night.
And I will lead thee through the midst of
Judea, until thou come before Jerusalem; and I will set thy throne in the midst thereof; and thou shalt drive them as sheep that have no
shepherd, and a dog shall not so much as open his mouth at thee: for these things were told me according to my
foreknowledge, and they were declared unto me, and I am sent to tell thee.
And
Judith said, I will not eat thereof, lest there be an offence: but provision shall be made for me of the things that I have brought.
Then said
Judith unto him As thy soul liveth, my lord, thine
handmaid shall not
spend those things that I have, before the Lord work by mine hand the things that he hath determined.
Then said
Judith unto him, Who am I now, that I should
gainsay my lord? surely
whatsoever pleaseth him I will do speedily, and it shall be my joy unto the day of my death.
Now when
Judith came in and sat down, Holofernes his heart was
ravished with her, and his mind was moved, and he desired greatly her company; for he waited a time to
deceive her, from the day that he had seen her.
So
Judith said, I will drink now, my lord, because my life is
magnified in me this day more than all the days since I was born.
And
Judith was left alone in the tent, and Holofernes lying alone upon his bed: for he was filled with wine.
Now
Judith had commanded her
maid to stand without her
bedchamber, and to wait for her. coming forth, as she did daily: for she said she would go forth to her prayers, and she spake to Bagoas according to the same purpose.
So all went forth and none was left in the
bedchamber, neither little nor great. Then
Judith, standing by his bed, said in her heart, O Lord God of all power, look at this present upon the works of mine hands for the
exaltation of Jerusalem.
Then said
Judith afar off, to the
watchmen at the gate, Open, open now the gate: God, even our God, is with us, to
shew his power yet in Jerusalem, and his forces against the enemy, as he hath even done this day.
Then said
Judith unto them, Hear me now, my brethren, and take this head, and
hang it upon the highest place of your walls.
But when they had recovered him, he fell at
Judith’s feet, and reverenced her, and said, Blessed art thou in all the tabernacles of
Juda, and in all nations, which hearing thy name shall be
astonished.
Now therefore tell me all the things that thou hast done in these days. Then
Judith declared unto him in the midst of the people all that she had done, from the day that she went forth until that hour she spake unto them.
Then went in Bagoas, and
knocked at the door of the tent; for he thought that he had
slept with
Judith.
After he went into the tent where
Judith lodged: and when he found her not, he
leaped out to the people, and
cried,
Then Joacim the high priest, and the ancients of the children of Israel that dwelt in Jerusalem, came to behold the good things that God had shewed to Israel, and to see
Judith, and to
salute her.
And the people
spoiled the camp the space of thirty days: and they gave unto
Judith Holofernes his tent, and all his plate, and beds, and vessels, and all his stuff: and she took it and laid it on her
mule; and made ready her carts, and laid them
thereon.
Then
Judith began to sing this
thanksgiving in all Israel, and all the people
sang after her this song of praise.
And
Judith said, Begin unto my God with
timbrels, sing unto my Lord with cymbals:
tune unto him a new
psalm:
exalt him, and call upon his name.
