Behold, I have taught you statutes and
judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land
whither ye go to possess it.
See, I have taught you statutes and ordinances just as the LORD my God has commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land that you are about to enter and possess.
And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?
And what nation is great enough to have righteous statutes and ordinances like this entire law I set before you
today?
And the LORD commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and
judgments, that ye might do them in the land
whither ye go over to possess it.
At that time the LORD commanded me to teach you the statutes and ordinances you are to follow in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess.
These are the
testimonies, and the statutes, and the
judgments, which Moses spake unto the children of Israel, after they came forth out of Egypt,
These are the
testimonies, statutes, and ordinances that Moses proclaimed to them after they had come out of Egypt,
And Moses called all Israel, and said unto them, Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your ears this day, that ye may learn them, and keep, and do them.
Then Moses summoned all Israel and said to them: Hear, O Israel, the statutes and ordinances that I declare in your hearing this day. Learn them and observe them carefully.
But as for thee, stand thou here by me, and I will speak unto thee all the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments, which thou shalt teach them, that they may do them in the land which I give them to possess it.
But you stand here with Me, that I may speak to you all the commandments and statutes and ordinances you are to teach them to follow in the land that I am giving them to possess.”
Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the
judgments, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land
whither ye go to possess it:
These are the commandments and statutes and ordinances that the LORD your God has
instructed me to teach you to follow in the land that you are about to enter and possess,
And when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What mean the
testimonies, and the statutes, and the
judgments, which the LORD our God hath commanded you?
In the future, when your son asks, “What is the meaning of the decrees and statutes and ordinances that the LORD our God has commanded you?”
Thou shalt therefore keep the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments, which I command thee this day, to do them.
So keep the commandments and statutes and ordinances that I am giving you to follow this day.
Wherefore it shall come to pass, if ye
hearken to these
judgments, and keep, and do them, that the LORD thy God shall keep unto thee the covenant and the mercy which he
sware unto thy fathers:
If you
listen to these ordinances and keep them carefully, then the LORD your God will keep His covenant and the loving devotion that He
swore to your fathers.
Beware that thou
forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his
judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day:
Be careful not to
forget the LORD your God by failing to keep His commandments and ordinances and statutes, which I am giving you this day.
He
doth execute the
judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving him food and
raiment.
He executes justice for the fatherless and widow, and He loves the foreigner, giving him food and clothing.
Therefore thou shalt love the LORD thy God, and keep his charge, and his statutes, and his
judgments, and his commandments,
alway.
You shall therefore love the LORD your God and always keep His charge, His statutes, His ordinances, and His commandments.
And ye shall observe to do all the statutes and judgments which I set before you this day.
be careful to follow all the statutes and ordinances that I am setting before you
today.
These are the statutes and judgments, which ye shall observe to do in the land, which the LORD God of thy fathers giveth thee to possess it, all the days that ye live upon the earth.
These are the statutes and ordinances you must be careful to follow all the days you live in the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, has given you to possess.
Judges and officers shalt thou make thee in all thy gates, which the LORD thy God giveth thee, throughout thy tribes: and they shall judge the people with just judgment.
You are to
appoint judges and officials for your tribes in every town that the LORD your God is giving you. They are to
judge the people with righteous
judgment.
Thou shalt not
wrest judgment; thou shalt not respect persons, neither take a gift: for a gift
doth blind the eyes of the wise, and
pervert the words of the righteous.
Do not deny justice or show
partiality. Do not accept a
bribe, for a
bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous.
If there arise a matter too hard for thee in
judgment, between blood and blood, between
plea and
plea, and between stroke and stroke, being matters of controversy within thy gates: then shalt thou arise, and get thee up into the place which the LORD thy God shall choose;
If a case is too difficult for you to
judge, whether the controversy within your gates is regarding
bloodshed, lawsuits, or assaults, you must go up to the place the LORD your God will choose.
And thou shalt come unto the priests the Levites, and unto the
judge that shall be in those days, and
enquire; and they shall
shew thee the sentence of
judgment:
You are to go to the
Levitical priests and to the
judge who presides at that time. Inquire of them, and they will give you a
verdict in the case.
According to the sentence of the law which they shall teach thee, and according to the
judgment which they shall tell thee, thou shalt do: thou shalt not decline from the sentence which they shall
shew thee, to the right hand, nor to the left.
according to the terms of law they give and the
verdict they
proclaim. Do not turn aside to the right or to the left from the decision they declare to you.
And the man that will do
presumptuously, and will not
hearken unto the priest that standeth to minister there before the LORD thy God, or unto the
judge, even that man shall die: and thou shalt put away the evil from Israel.
But the man who acts
presumptuously, refusing to
listen either to the priest who stands there to serve the LORD your God, or to the
judge, must be put to death. You must
purge the evil from Israel.
Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days;
both parties to the dispute must stand in the presence of the LORD, before the priests and judges who are in office at that time.
And the
judges shall make
diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath
testified falsely against his brother;
The
judges shall
investigate thoroughly, and if the witness is
proven to be a
liar who has falsely accused his brother,
Then thy elders and thy judges shall come forth, and they shall measure unto the cities which are round about him that is slain:
your elders and
judges must come out and measure the distance from the
victim to the
neighboring cities.
Thou shalt not
pervert the
judgment of the stranger, nor of the fatherless; nor take a widow’s
raiment to
pledge:
Do not deny justice to the foreigner or the fatherless, and do not take a widow’s
cloak as security.
If there be a controversy between men, and they come unto
judgment, that the
judges may
judge them; then they shall
justify the righteous, and
condemn the wicked.
If there is a dispute between men, they are to go to court to be
judged, so that the innocent may be
acquitted and the guilty condemned.
And it shall be, if the wicked man be worthy to be beaten, that the judge shall cause him to lie down, and to be beaten before his face, according to his fault, by a certain number.
If the guilty man deserves to be beaten, the
judge shall have him lie down and be
flogged in his presence with the number of lashes his crime warrants.
This day the LORD thy God hath commanded thee to do these statutes and judgments: thou shalt therefore keep and do them with all thine heart, and with all thy soul.
The LORD your God commands you this day to follow these statutes and ordinances. You must be careful to follow them with all your heart and with all your soul.
Thou hast
avouched the LORD this day to be thy God, and to walk in his ways, and to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his
judgments, and to
hearken unto his voice:
Today you have proclaimed that the LORD is your God and that you will walk in His ways, keep His statutes and commandments and ordinances, and
listen to His voice.
These shall stand upon mount
Gerizim to
bless the people, when ye are come over Jordan;
Simeon, and Levi, and
Judah, and
Issachar, and Joseph, and Benjamin:
“When you have crossed the Jordan, these tribes shall stand on Mount
Gerizim to
bless the people:
Simeon, Levi,
Judah,
Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin.
Cursed be he that perverteth the
judgment of the stranger, fatherless, and widow. And all the people shall say,
Amen.
‘
Cursed is he who withholds justice from the foreigner, the fatherless, or the widow.’ And let all the people say, ‘
Amen!’
In that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his
judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the LORD thy God shall
bless thee in the land
whither thou goest to possess it.
For I am commanding you
today to love the LORD your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, statutes, and ordinances, so that you may live and increase, and the LORD your God may
bless you in the land that you are entering to possess.
He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.
He is the Rock, His work is perfect; all His ways are just. A God of faithfulness without injustice, righteous and upright is He.
For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges.
For their rock is not like our Rock, even our enemies
concede.
For the LORD shall
judge his people, and
repent himself for his servants, when he
seeth that their power is gone, and there is none shut up, or left.
For the LORD will
vindicate His people and have
compassion on His servants when He sees that their strength is gone and no one remains, slave or free.
If I
whet my
glittering sword, and mine hand take hold on
judgment; I will render
vengeance to mine enemies, and will reward them that
hate me.
And this is the blessing of Judah: and he said, Hear, LORD, the voice of Judah, and bring him unto his people: let his hands be sufficient for him; and be thou an help to him from his enemies.
And concerning Judah he said: “O LORD, hear the cry of Judah and bring him to his people. With his own hands he defends his cause, but may You be a help against his foes.”
They shall teach Jacob thy judgments, and Israel thy law: they shall put incense before thee, and whole burnt sacrifice upon thine altar.
He will teach Your ordinances to Jacob and Your law to Israel; he will set incense before You and whole burnt offerings on Your altar.
And he provided the first part for himself, because there, in a portion of the
lawgiver, was he seated; and he came with the heads of the people, he executed the justice of the LORD, and his
judgments with Israel.
He chose the best land for himself, because a ruler’s portion was reserved for him there. He came with the leaders of the people; he administered the LORD’s justice and His ordinances for Israel.”
And all
Naphtali, and the land of Ephraim, and
Manasseh, and all the land of
Judah, unto the utmost sea,
all of
Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and
Manasseh, all the land of
Judah as far as the Western Sea,
But the children of Israel committed a
trespass in the
accursed thing: for
Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of
Judah, took of the
accursed thing: and the anger of the LORD was
kindled against the children of Israel.
The Israelites, however, acted unfaithfully regarding the things devoted to destruction.
Achan son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of
Judah, took some of what was set apart. So the anger of the LORD burned against the Israelites.
So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken:
So Joshua arose early the next morning and had Israel come forward tribe by tribe, and the tribe of Judah was selected.
And he brought the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zarhites: and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man; and Zabdi was taken:
He had the clans of Judah come forward, and the clan of the Zerahites was selected. He had the clan of the Zerahites come forward, and the family of Zabdi was selected.
And he brought his household man by man; and
Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of
Judah, was taken.
And he had the family of Zabdi come forward man by man, and
Achan son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of
Judah, was selected.
And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their
judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over against mount
Gerizim, and half of them over against mount
Ebal; as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded before, that they should
bless the people of Israel.
All Israel, foreigners and citizens alike, with their elders, officers, and
judges, stood on both sides of the ark of the covenant of the LORD facing the
Levitical priests who carried it. Half of the people stood in front of Mount
Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount
Ebal, as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded earlier, to
bless the people of Israel.
And at that time came Joshua, and cut off the Anakims from the mountains, from
Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the mountains of
Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel: Joshua destroyed them utterly with their cities.
At that time Joshua proceeded to
eliminate the
Anakim from the hill country of
Hebron, Debir, and Anab, and from all the hill country of
Judah and of Israel. Joshua devoted them to destruction, along with their cities.
Then the children of
Judah came unto Joshua in
Gilgal: and
Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said unto him, Thou knowest the thing that the LORD said unto Moses the man of God concerning me and thee in Kadesh-barnea.
Then the sons of
Judah approached Joshua at
Gilgal, and
Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the LORD said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh-barnea about you and me.
This then was the lot of the tribe of the children of
Judah by their families; even to the border of
Edom the wilderness of Zin southward was the
uttermost part of the south coast.
Now the
allotment for the clans of the tribe of
Judah extended to the border of
Edom, to the Wilderness of Zin at the extreme southern boundary:
And the west border was to the great sea, and the coast thereof. This is the coast of the children of Judah round about according to their families.
And the western border was the coastline of the Great Sea. These are the boundaries around the clans of the descendants of Judah.
And unto
Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a part among the children of
Judah, according to the commandment of the LORD to Joshua, even the city of Arba the father of
Anak, which city is
Hebron.
According to the LORD’s command to him, Joshua gave
Caleb son of Jephunneh a portion among the sons of
Judah—Kiriath-arba, that is,
Hebron. (Arba was the
forefather of
Anak.)
This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Judah according to their families.
This is the inheritance of the clans of the tribe of Judah.
And the
uttermost cities of the tribe of the children of
Judah toward the coast of
Edom southward were Kabzeel, and Eder, and Jagur,
These were the
southernmost cities of the tribe of
Judah in the Negev toward the border of
Edom:
As for the Jebusites the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah could not drive them out: but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at Jerusalem unto this day.
But the descendants of Judah could not drive out the Jebusites living in Jerusalem. So to this day the Jebusites live there among the descendants of Judah.
And they shall divide it into seven parts:
Judah shall
abide in their coast on the south, and the house of Joseph shall
abide in their coasts on the north.
and divide the land into seven portions. Judah shall remain in their territory in the south, and the house of Joseph shall remain in their territory in the north.
And the lot of the tribe of the children of Benjamin came up according to their families: and the coast of their lot came forth between the children of Judah and the children of Joseph.
The first lot came up for the clans of the tribe of Benjamin. Their
allotted territory lay between the tribes of
Judah and Joseph:
And the border was drawn thence, and compassed the corner of the sea southward, from the hill that lieth before Beth-horon southward; and the goings out thereof were at Kirjath-
baal, which is Kirjath-jearim, a city of the children of
Judah: this was the west quarter.
On the west side the border curved southward from the hill facing Beth-horon on the south and came out at Kiriath-
baal (that is, Kiriath-jearim), a city of the sons of
Judah. This was the western side.
And the second lot came forth to
Simeon, even for the tribe of the children of
Simeon according to their families: and their inheritance was within the inheritance of the children of
Judah.
The second lot came out for the clans of the tribe of
Simeon:
And they had in their inheritance Beer-
sheba, or
Sheba, and Moladah,
Their inheritance lay within the territory of
Judah and included
Beersheba (or
Sheba), Moladah,
Out of the portion of the children of
Judah was the inheritance of the children of
Simeon: for the part of the children of
Judah was too much for them: therefore the children of
Simeon had their inheritance within the inheritance of them.
The inheritance of the Simeonites was taken from the territory of Judah, because the share for Judah’s descendants was too large for them. So the Simeonites received an inheritance within Judah’s portion.
And then the coast turneth westward to Aznoth-
tabor, and goeth out from thence to Hukkok, and reacheth to
Zebulun on the south side, and reacheth to Asher on the west side, and to
Judah upon Jordan toward the
sunrising.
Then the border turned westward to Aznoth-
tabor and ran from there to Hukkok, touching
Zebulun on the south side, Asher on the west, and
Judah at the Jordan on the east.
And he shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation for
judgment, and until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days: then shall the
slayer return, and come unto his own city, and unto his own house, unto the city from whence he fled.
He is to stay in that city until he stands trial before the assembly and until the death of the high priest serving at that time. Then the
manslayer may return to his own home in the city from which he fled.”
And they appointed Kedesh in
Galilee in mount
Naphtali, and
Shechem in mount Ephraim, and Kirjath-arba, which is
Hebron, in the mountain of
Judah.
So they set apart Kedesh in
Galilee in the hill country of
Naphtali,
Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath-arba (that is,
Hebron) in the hill country of
Judah.
And the lot came out for the families of the Kohathites: and the children of Aaron the priest, which were of the Levites, had by lot out of the tribe of
Judah, and out of the tribe of
Simeon, and out of the tribe of Benjamin, thirteen cities.
The first lot came out for the Kohathite clans. The Levites who were descendants of Aaron the priest received thirteen cities by lot from the tribes of
Judah,
Simeon, and Benjamin.
And they gave out of the tribe of the children of
Judah, and out of the tribe of the children of
Simeon, these cities which are here mentioned by name,
From the tribes of
Judah and
Simeon, they designated these cities by name
And they gave them the city of Arba the father of
Anak, which city is
Hebron, in the hill country of
Judah, with the suburbs thereof round about it.
They gave them Kiriath-arba (that is,
Hebron), with its surrounding pasturelands, in the hill country of
Judah. (Arba was the father of
Anak.)
And Joshua called for all Israel, and for their elders, and for their heads, and for their
judges, and for their officers, and said unto them, I am old and
stricken in age:
he summoned all Israel, including its elders, leaders, judges, and officers. “I am old and well along in years,” he said,
And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to
Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads, and for their
judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God.
Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at
Shechem. He summoned the elders, leaders,
judges, and officers of Israel, and they presented themselves before God.
And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.
“Judah shall go up,” answered the LORD. “Indeed, I have delivered the land into their hands.”
And
Judah said unto
Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the
Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So
Simeon went with him.
Then the men of
Judah said to their brothers the Simeonites, “Come up with us to our
allotted territory, and let us fight against the
Canaanites. And we likewise will go with you to your territory.” So the Simeonites went with them.
And
Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the
Canaanites and the
Perizzites into their hand: and they
slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men.
When
Judah attacked, the LORD delivered the
Canaanites and
Perizzites into their hands, and they struck down ten thousand men at Bezek.
Now the children of
Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and
smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.
Then the men of Judah fought against Jerusalem and captured it. They put the city to the sword and set it on fire.
And afterward the children of
Judah went down to fight against the
Canaanites, that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley.
Afterward, the men of
Judah marched down to fight against the
Canaanites living in the hill country, in the Negev, and in the foothills.
And
Judah went against the
Canaanites that dwelt in
Hebron: (now the name of
Hebron before was Kirjath-arba:) and they
slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.
Judah also marched against the
Canaanites who were living in
Hebron (formerly known as Kiriath-arba), and they struck down Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai.
And the children of the Kenite, Moses’ father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of
Judah into the wilderness of
Judah, which lieth in the south of
Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.
Now the descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, the Kenite, went up with the men of
Judah from the City of Palms to the Wilderness of
Judah in the Negev near
Arad. They went to live among the people.
And
Judah went with
Simeon his brother, and they
slew the
Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.
Then the men of
Judah went with their brothers the Simeonites, attacked the
Canaanites living in Zephath, and devoted the city to destruction. So it was called Hormah.
Also
Judah took
Gaza with the coast thereof, and
Askelon with the coast thereof, and
Ekron with the coast thereof.
And
Judah also captured
Gaza, Ashkelon, and
Ekron—each with its territory.
And the LORD was with
Judah; and he
drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had
chariots of iron.
The LORD was with
Judah, and they took possession of the hill country; but they could not drive out the inhabitants of the plains because they had
chariots of iron.
And they gave
Hebron unto
Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of
Anak.
Just as Moses had promised,
Judah gave
Hebron to
Caleb, who drove out the descendants of the three sons of
Anak.
Nevertheless the LORD raised up
judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that
spoiled them.
Then the LORD raised up
judges, who saved them from the hands of those who
plundered them.
And yet they would not
hearken unto their
judges, but they went a
whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the LORD; but they did not so.
Israel, however, did not
listen to their
judges. Instead, they
prostituted themselves with other gods and bowed down to them. They quickly turned from the way of their fathers, who had walked in obedience to the LORD’s commandments; they did not do as their fathers had done.
And when the LORD raised them up
judges, then the LORD was with the
judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the
judge: for it
repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that
oppressed them and
vexed them.
Whenever the LORD raised up a
judge for the Israelites, He was with that
judge and saved them from the hands of their enemies while the
judge was still alive; for the LORD was moved to
pity by their
groaning under those who
oppressed them and
afflicted them.
And it came to pass, when the
judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their
stubborn way.
But when the
judge died, the Israelites became even more corrupt than their fathers, going after other gods to serve them and bow down to them. They would not give up their evil practices and
stubborn ways.
And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he
judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushan-rishathaim king of
Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushan-rishathaim.
The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he became Israel’s
judge and went out to war. And the LORD delivered Cushan-rishathaim king of
Aram into the hand of Othniel, who prevailed against him.
And she dwelt under the palm tree of
Deborah between
Ramah and
Bethel in mount Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for
judgment.
And she would sit under the Palm of
Deborah between
Ramah and
Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim, where the Israelites would go up to her for
judgment.
Speak, ye that
ride on white
asses, ye that sit in
judgment, and walk by the way.
And he judged Israel twenty and three years, and died, and was buried in Shamir.
Tola judged Israel twenty-three years, and when he died, he was buried in Shamir.
And after him arose
Jair, a Gileadite, and
judged Israel twenty and two years.
Tola was followed by
Jair the Gileadite, who
judged Israel twenty-two years.
Moreover the children of
Ammon passed over Jordan to fight also against
Judah, and against Benjamin, and against the house of Ephraim; so that Israel was
sore distressed.
The
Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against
Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim, and Israel was in deep distress.
Wherefore I have not
sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: the LORD the
Judge be
judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of
Ammon.
I have not
sinned against you, but you have done me wrong by
waging war against me. May the LORD, the
Judge, decide
today between the Israelites and the
Ammonites.”
And
Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then died
Jephthah the Gileadite, and was buried in one of the cities of
Gilead.
Jephthah judged Israel six years, and when he died, he was buried in one of the cities of
Gilead.
And after him Ibzan of
Bethlehem judged Israel.
And he had thirty sons, and thirty daughters, whom he sent abroad, and took in thirty daughters from abroad for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years.
He had thirty sons, as well as thirty daughters whom he gave in marriage to men outside his clan; and for his sons he brought back thirty wives from elsewhere. Ibzan judged Israel seven years.
And after him Elon, a Zebulonite, judged Israel; and he judged Israel ten years.
After Ibzan, Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel ten years.
And after him Abdon the son of
Hillel, a Pirathonite,
judged Israel.
After Elon, Abdon son of
Hillel, from Pirathon,
judged Israel.
And he had forty sons and thirty nephews, that
rode on
threescore and ten
ass colts: and he
judged Israel eight years.
He had forty sons and thirty grandsons, who
rode on seventy
donkeys. And he
judged Israel eight years.
Then the Philistines went up, and pitched in Judah, and spread themselves in Lehi.
Then the Philistines went up, camped in
Judah, and
deployed themselves near the town of Lehi.
And the men of
Judah said, Why are ye come up against us? And they answered, To bind
Samson are we come up, to do to him as he hath done to us.
“Why have you attacked us?” said the men of
Judah. The Philistines replied, “We have come to arrest
Samson and pay him back for what he has done to us.”
Then three thousand men of
Judah went to the top of the rock Etam, and said to
Samson, Knowest thou not that the Philistines are rulers over us? what is this that thou hast done unto us? And he said unto them, As they did unto me, so have I done unto them.
In
response, three thousand men of
Judah went to the cave at the rock of Etam, and they asked
Samson, “Do you not
realize that the Philistines rule over us? What have you done to us?” “I have done to them what they did to me,” he replied.
And he judged Israel in the days of the Philistines twenty years.
And
Samson judged Israel for twenty years in the days of the Philistines.
