For the LORD brought
Judah low because of
Ahaz king of Israel; for he made
Judah naked, and
transgressed sore against the LORD.
For the LORD humbled
Judah because
Ahaz king of Israel had thrown off restraint in
Judah and had been most unfaithful to the LORD.
And in every several city of
Judah he made high places to burn incense unto other gods, and
provoked to anger the LORD God of his fathers.
In every city of
Judah he built high places to offer incense to other gods, and so he
provoked the LORD, the God of his fathers.
Now the rest of his acts and of all his ways, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.
As for the rest of the acts of
Ahaz and all his ways, from beginning to end, they are indeed written in the Book of the Kings of
Judah and Israel.
Wherefore the wrath of the LORD was upon
Judah and Jerusalem, and he hath delivered them to trouble, to
astonishment, and to
hissing, as ye see with your eyes.
Therefore, the wrath of the LORD has fallen upon
Judah and Jerusalem, and He has made them an object of terror,
horror, and
mockery, as you can see with your own eyes.
And they brought seven bullocks, and seven rams, and seven lambs, and seven he goats, for a sin offering for the kingdom, and for the sanctuary, and for Judah. And he commanded the priests the sons of Aaron to offer them on the altar of the LORD.
They brought seven bulls, seven rams, seven lambs, and seven male goats as a sin offering for the kingdom, for the sanctuary, and for Judah. And the king commanded the priests, the descendants of Aaron, to offer them on the altar of the LORD.
And
Hezekiah sent to all Israel and
Judah, and wrote letters also to Ephraim and
Manasseh, that they should come to the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, to keep the
passover unto the LORD God of Israel.
Then
Hezekiah sent word throughout all Israel and
Judah, and he also wrote letters to Ephraim and
Manasseh inviting them to come to the house of the LORD in Jerusalem to keep the
Passover of the LORD, the God of Israel.
So the posts went with the letters from the king and his princes throughout all Israel and
Judah, and according to the commandment of the king, saying, Ye children of Israel, turn again unto the LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, and he will return to the
remnant of you, that are escaped out of the hand of the kings of Assyria.
So the couriers went throughout Israel and
Judah with letters from the king and his officials, which read: “Children of Israel, return to the LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, so that He may return to those of you who remain, who have escaped the
grasp of the kings of Assyria.
Also in Judah the hand of God was to give them one heart to do the commandment of the king and of the princes, by the word of the LORD.
Moreover, the power of God was on the people in Judah to give them one heart to obey the command of the king and his officials according to the word of the LORD.
For
Hezekiah king of
Judah did give to the congregation a thousand bullocks and seven thousand sheep; and the princes gave to the congregation a thousand bullocks and ten thousand sheep: and a great number of priests
sanctified themselves.
For
Hezekiah king of
Judah contributed a thousand bulls and seven thousand sheep for the assembly, and the officials contributed a thousand bulls and ten thousand sheep for the assembly, and a great number of priests consecrated themselves.
And all the congregation of
Judah, with the priests and the Levites, and all the congregation that came out of Israel, and the strangers that came out of the land of Israel, and that dwelt in
Judah,
rejoiced.
Then the whole assembly of
Judah rejoiced along with the priests and Levites and the whole assembly that had come from Israel, including the foreigners who had come from Israel and those who lived in
Judah.
Now when all this was finished, all Israel that were present went out to the cities of
Judah, and
brake the images in pieces, and cut down the groves, and threw down the high places and the altars out of all
Judah and Benjamin, in Ephraim also and
Manasseh, until they had utterly destroyed them all. Then all the children of Israel returned, every man to his possession, into their own cities.
When all this had ended, the Israelites in attendance went out to the cities of
Judah and broke up the sacred pillars,
chopped down the Asherah poles, and
tore down the high places and altars throughout
Judah and Benjamin, as well as in Ephraim and
Manasseh, until they had utterly destroyed them all. Then all the Israelites returned to their cities, each to his own property.
And concerning the children of Israel and
Judah, that dwelt in the cities of
Judah, they also brought in the
tithe of oxen and sheep, and the
tithe of holy things which were consecrated unto the LORD their God, and laid them by heaps.
And the Israelites and
Judahites who lived in the cities of
Judah also brought a
tithe of their herds and flocks and a
tithe of the holy things consecrated to the LORD their God, and they laid them in large heaps.
And thus did
Hezekiah throughout all
Judah, and wrought that which was good and right and truth before the LORD his God.
So this is what
Hezekiah did throughout
Judah. He did what was good and upright and true before the LORD his God.
After these things, and the establishment thereof,
Sennacherib king of Assyria came, and entered into
Judah, and
encamped against the
fenced cities, and thought to
win them for himself.
After all these acts of faithfulness,
Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded
Judah. He laid siege to the fortified cities, intending to
conquer them for himself.
With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of
Hezekiah king of
Judah.
With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles.” So the people were strengthened by the words of
Hezekiah king of
Judah.
After this did
Sennacherib king of Assyria send his servants to Jerusalem, (but he himself laid siege against
Lachish, and all his power with him,) unto
Hezekiah king of
Judah, and unto all
Judah that were at Jerusalem, saying,
Later, as
Sennacherib king of Assyria and all his forces besieged
Lachish, he sent his servants to Jerusalem with a message for King
Hezekiah of
Judah and all the people of
Judah who were in Jerusalem:
Hath not the same
Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, and commanded
Judah and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall worship before one altar, and burn incense upon it?
Did not
Hezekiah himself remove His high places and His altars and say to
Judah and Jerusalem, ‘You must worship before one altar, and on it you shall burn sacrifices’?
And many brought gifts unto the LORD to Jerusalem, and presents to
Hezekiah king of
Judah: so that he was
magnified in the sight of all nations from
thenceforth.
Many brought offerings to Jerusalem for the LORD and valuable gifts for
Hezekiah king of
Judah, and from then on he was
exalted in the eyes of all nations.
But
Hezekiah rendered not again according to the benefit done unto him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was wrath upon him, and upon
Judah and Jerusalem.
But because his heart was proud,
Hezekiah did not repay the favor shown to him. Therefore wrath came upon him and upon
Judah and Jerusalem.
Now the rest of the acts of
Hezekiah, and his goodness, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, and in the book of the kings of
Judah and Israel.
As for the rest of the acts of
Hezekiah and his deeds of loving devotion, they are indeed written in the vision of the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz in the Book of the Kings of
Judah and Israel.
And
Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the chiefest of the
sepulchres of the sons of David: and all
Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honour at his death. And
Manasseh his son reigned in his
stead.
And
Hezekiah rested with his fathers and was buried in the upper tombs of David’s descendants. All
Judah and the people of Jerusalem paid him honor at his death. And his son
Manasseh reigned in his place.
So
Manasseh made
Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to
err, and to do worse than the heathen, whom the LORD had destroyed before the children of Israel.
So
Manasseh led the people of
Judah and Jerusalem
astray, so that they did greater evil than the nations that the LORD had destroyed before the Israelites.
Now after this he built a wall without the city of David, on the west side of
Gihon, in the valley, even to the entering in at the fish gate, and compassed about Ophel, and raised it up a very great height, and put captains of war in all the
fenced cities of
Judah.
After this,
Manasseh rebuilt the outer wall of the City of David from west of
Gihon in the valley to the entrance of the Fish Gate, and he brought it around the hill of Ophel and
heightened it considerably. He also stationed military commanders in all the fortified cities of
Judah.
And he repaired the altar of the LORD, and sacrificed
thereon peace offerings and
thank offerings, and commanded
Judah to serve the LORD God of Israel.
Then he restored the altar of the LORD and sacrificed peace offerings and
thank offerings on it, and he told
Judah to serve the LORD, the God of Israel.
For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father: and in the
twelfth year he began to
purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the
molten images.
In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young,
Josiah began to seek the God of his father David, and in the
twelfth year he began to
cleanse Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, the Asherah poles, the carved idols, and the cast images.
And he burnt the bones of the priests upon their altars, and
cleansed Judah and Jerusalem.
Then he burned the bones of the priests on their altars. So he
cleansed Judah and Jerusalem.
And when they came to Hilkiah the high priest, they delivered the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered of the hand of
Manasseh and Ephraim, and of all the
remnant of Israel, and of all
Judah and Benjamin; and they returned to Jerusalem.
So they went to Hilkiah the high priest and gave him the money that had been brought into the house of God, which the Levites at the doors had collected from the people of
Manasseh and Ephraim, from all the
remnant of Israel,
Judah, and Benjamin, and from the people of Jerusalem.
Even to the artificers and builders gave they it, to
buy hewn stone, and timber for couplings, and to floor the houses which the kings of
Judah had destroyed.
They also gave money to the carpenters and builders to
buy dressed stone, as well as timbers for couplings and beams for the buildings that the kings of
Judah had allowed to
deteriorate.
Go,
enquire of the LORD for me, and for them that are left in Israel and in
Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found: for great is the wrath of the LORD that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD, to do after all that is written in this book.
“Go and inquire of the LORD for me and for those remaining in Israel and Judah concerning the words in the book that has been found. For great is the wrath of the LORD that has been poured out on us because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD by doing all that is written in this book.”
Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah:
that this is what the LORD says: I am about to bring
calamity on this place and on its people, according to all the curses written in the book that has been read in the presence of the king of
Judah,
And as for the king of
Judah, who sent you to
enquire of the LORD, so shall ye say unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel concerning the words which thou hast heard;
But as for the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the LORD, tell him that this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘As for the words that you heard,
Then the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem.
Then the king summoned all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem.
And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests, and the Levites, and all the people, great and small: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the house of the LORD.
And he went up to the house of the LORD with all the people of Judah and Jerusalem, as well as the priests and the Levites—all the people small and great—and in their hearing he read all the words of the Book of the Covenant that had been found in the house of the LORD.
And there was no
passover like to that kept in Israel from the days of Samuel the prophet; neither did all the kings of Israel keep such a
passover as
Josiah kept, and the priests, and the Levites, and all
Judah and Israel that were present, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
No such
Passover had been observed in Israel since the days of Samuel the prophet. None of the kings of Israel ever observed a
Passover like the one that
Josiah observed with the priests, the Levites, all
Judah, the Israelites who were present, and the people of Jerusalem.
But he sent ambassadors to him, saying, What have I to do with thee, thou king of
Judah? I come not against thee this day, but against the house
wherewith I have war: for God commanded me to make
haste:
forbear thee from
meddling with God, who is with me, that he destroy thee not.
But Neco sent messengers to him, saying, “What is the issue between you and me, O king of
Judah? I have not come against you
today, but I am fighting another dynasty. God told me to
hurry; so stop
opposing God, who is with me, or He will destroy you!”
His servants therefore took him out of that
chariot, and put him in the second
chariot that he had; and they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died, and was buried in one of the
sepulchres of his fathers. And all
Judah and Jerusalem
mourned for
Josiah.
So his servants took him out of his
chariot, put him in his second
chariot, and brought him to Jerusalem, where he died. And
Josiah was buried in the tomb of his fathers, and all
Judah and Jerusalem
mourned for him.
And his deeds, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah.
his acts from beginning to end—they are indeed written in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah.
And the king of Egypt put him down at Jerusalem, and condemned the land in an hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold.
And the king of Egypt
dethroned him in Jerusalem and imposed on
Judah a
levy of a hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold.
And the king of Egypt made Eliakim his brother king over
Judah and Jerusalem, and turned his name to
Jehoiakim. And
Necho took
Jehoahaz his brother, and carried him to Egypt.
Then Neco king of Egypt made Eliakim brother of
Jehoahaz king over
Judah and Jerusalem, and he changed Eliakim’s name to
Jehoiakim. But Neco took Eliakim’s brother
Jehoahaz and carried him off to Egypt.
Now the rest of the acts of
Jehoiakim, and his abominations which he did, and that which was found in him, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and
Judah: and
Jehoiachin his son reigned in his
stead.
As for the rest of the acts of
Jehoiakim, the abominations he committed, and all that was found against him, they are indeed written in the Book of the Kings of Israel and
Judah. And his son
Jehoiachin reigned in his place.
And when the year was
expired, king
Nebuchadnezzar sent, and brought him to Babylon, with the goodly vessels of the house of the LORD, and made
Zedekiah his brother king over
Judah and Jerusalem.
In the spring, King
Nebuchadnezzar summoned
Jehoiachin and brought him to Babylon, along with the articles of value from the house of the LORD. And he made
Jehoiachin’s relative
Zedekiah king over
Judah and Jerusalem.
Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, All the kingdoms of the earth hath the LORD God of heaven given me; and he hath charged me to build him an house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who is there among you of all his people? The LORD his God be with him, and let him go up.
“This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: ‘The LORD, the God of heaven, who has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, has appointed me to build a house for Him at Jerusalem in
Judah.
Whoever among you belongs to His people, may the LORD his God be with him, and may he go up.’”
Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, The LORD God of heaven hath given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he hath charged me to build him an house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah.
“This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: ‘The LORD, the God of heaven, who has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, has appointed me to build a house for Him at Jerusalem in Judah.
Who is there among you of all his people? his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of the LORD God of Israel, (he is the God,) which is in Jerusalem.
Whoever among you belongs to His people, may his God be with him, and may he go to Jerusalem in
Judah and build the house of the LORD, the God of Israel; He is the God who is in Jerusalem.
Then rose up the chief of the fathers of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests, and the Levites, with all them whose spirit God had raised, to go up to build the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem.
So the family heads of
Judah and Benjamin, along with the priests and Levites—
everyone whose spirit God had
stirred—prepared to go up and rebuild the house of the LORD in Jerusalem.
Even those did Cyrus king of Persia bring forth by the hand of Mithredath the
treasurer, and numbered them unto Sheshbazzar, the prince of
Judah.
Cyrus king of Persia had them brought out by the hand of Mithredath the
treasurer, who counted them out to Sheshbazzar the prince of
Judah.
Now these are the children of the province that went up out of the captivity, of those which had been carried away, whom
Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away unto Babylon, and came again unto Jerusalem and
Judah, every one unto his city;
Now these are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles carried away to Babylon by
Nebuchadnezzar its king. They returned to Jerusalem and
Judah, each to his own town,
Then stood Jeshua with his sons and his brethren, Kadmiel and his sons, the sons of Judah, together, to set forward the workmen in the house of God: the sons of Henadad, with their sons and their brethren the Levites.
So Jeshua and his sons and brothers, Kadmiel and his sons (descendants of Yehudah), and the sons of Henadad and their sons and brothers—all Levites—joined together to
supervise those working on the house of God.
Now when the
adversaries of
Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the LORD God of Israel;
When the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles were building a temple for the LORD, the God of Israel,
Then the people of the land
weakened the hands of the people of
Judah, and troubled them in building,
Then the people of the land set out to discourage the people of Judah and make them afraid to build.
And in the reign of
Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an
accusation against the inhabitants of
Judah and Jerusalem.
Then the prophets,
Haggai the prophet, and
Zechariah the son of
Iddo,
prophesied unto the Jews that were in
Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, even unto them.
Later, the prophets
Haggai and
Zechariah son of
Iddo prophesied to the Jews in
Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, who was over them.
Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of
Judea, to the house of the great God, which is builded with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work goeth fast on, and prospereth in their hands.
Let it be known to the king that we went into the province of
Judah, to the house of the great God. The people are rebuilding it with large stones, and placing timbers in the walls. This work is being carried out
diligently and is
prospering in their hands.
Forasmuch as thou art sent of the king, and of his seven counsellors, to
enquire concerning
Judah and Jerusalem, according to the law of thy God which is in thine hand;
You are sent by the king and his seven counselors to
evaluate Judah and Jerusalem according to the Law of your God, which is in your hand.
For we were
bondmen; yet our God hath not
forsaken us in our
bondage, but hath extended mercy unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a
reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the desolations thereof, and to give us a wall in
Judah and in Jerusalem.
Though we are slaves, our God has not
forsaken us in our
bondage, but He has extended to us grace in the sight of the kings of Persia, giving us new life to rebuild the house of our God and repair its ruins, and giving us a wall of protection in
Judah and Jerusalem.
And they made
proclamation throughout
Judah and Jerusalem unto all the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together unto Jerusalem;
And a
proclamation was issued throughout
Judah and Jerusalem that all the exiles should gather at Jerusalem.
Then all the men of
Judah and Benjamin gathered themselves together unto Jerusalem within three days. It was the ninth month, on the
twentieth day of the month; and all the people sat in the street of the house of God,
trembling because of this matter, and for the great rain.
So within the three days, all the men of
Judah and Benjamin assembled in Jerusalem, and on the
twentieth day of the ninth month, all the people sat in the square at the house of God,
trembling regarding this matter and because of the heavy rain.
Also of the Levites; Jozabad, and Shimei, and Kelaiah, (the same is Kelita,) Pethahiah,
Judah, and
Eliezer.
Among the Levites: Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (that is, Kelita), Pethahiah,
Judah, and
Eliezer.
That Hanani, one of my brethren, came, he and certain men of Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped, which were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.
Hanani, one of my brothers, arrived with men from
Judah. So I questioned them about the
remnant of the Jews who had survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem.
And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto
Judah, unto the city of my fathers’
sepulchres, that I may build it.
and answered the king, “If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, I ask that you send me to Judah, to the city where my fathers are buried, so that I may rebuild it.”
Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till I come into Judah;
I also said to him, “If it pleases the king, may letters be given to me for the governors west of the Euphrates, so that they will grant me safe passage until I reach Judah.
And
Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much
rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.
Meanwhile, the people of
Judah said: “The strength of the laborer fails, and there is so much
rubble that we will never be able to rebuild the wall.”
And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.
And from that day on, half of my servants did the work while the other half held spears, shields, bows, and
armor. The officers stationed themselves behind all the people of
Judah Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of
Judah, from the
twentieth year even unto the two and
thirtieth year of
Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor.
Furthermore, from the day King
Artaxerxes appointed me to be their governor in the land of
Judah, from his
twentieth year until his thirty-second year (twelve years total), neither I nor my brothers
ate the food
allotted to the governor.
And thou hast also appointed prophets to
preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in
Judah: and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.
and you have even appointed prophets in Jerusalem to
proclaim on your behalf: ‘There is a king in
Judah.’ Soon these rumors will reach the ears of the king. So come, let us
confer together.”
Moreover in those days the nobles of
Judah sent many letters unto
Tobiah, and the letters of
Tobiah came unto them.
Also in those days, the nobles of
Judah sent many letters to
Tobiah, and
Tobiah’s letters came back to them.
For there were many in
Judah sworn unto him, because he was the son in law of Shechaniah the son of Arah; and his son Johanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah.
For many in Judah were bound by oath to him, since he was a son-in-law of Shecaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berechiah.
These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom
Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to
Judah, every one unto his city;
These are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles carried away to Babylon by
Nebuchadnezzar its king. They returned to Jerusalem and
Judah, each to his own town,
Now these are the chief of the province that dwelt in Jerusalem: but in the cities of
Judah dwelt every one in his possession in their cities, to wit, Israel, the priests, and the Levites, and the
Nethinims, and the children of Solomon’s servants.
These are the heads of the provinces who settled in Jerusalem. (In the villages of Judah, however, each lived on his own property in their towns—the Israelites, priests, Levites, temple servants, and descendants of Solomon’s servants—
And at Jerusalem dwelt certain of the children of
Judah, and of the children of Benjamin. Of the children of
Judah; Athaiah the son of Uzziah, the son of
Zechariah, the son of Amariah, the son of Shephatiah, the son of Mahalaleel, of the children of
Perez;
while some of the descendants of
Judah and Benjamin settled in Jerusalem.) From the descendants of
Judah: Athaiah son of Uzziah, the son of
Zechariah, the son of Amariah, the son of Shephatiah, the son of Mahalalel, a
descendant of
Perez;
And
Joel the son of Zichri was their
overseer: and
Judah the son of Senuah was second over the city.
Joel son of Zichri was the officer over them, and
Judah son of Hassenuah was over the Second District of the city.
And the residue of Israel, of the priests, and the Levites, were in all the cities of Judah, every one in his inheritance.
The rest of the Israelites, with the priests and Levites, were in all the villages of Judah, each on his own inheritance.
And Pethahiah the son of Meshezabeel, of the children of Zerah the son of Judah, was at the king’s hand in all matters concerning the people.
Pethahiah son of Meshezabel, a
descendant of Zerah son of
Judah, was the king’s agent in every matter concerning the people.
And for the villages, with their fields, some of the children of Judah dwelt at Kirjath-arba, and in the villages thereof, and at Dibon, and in the villages thereof, and at Jekabzeel, and in the villages thereof,
As for the villages with their fields, some of the people of Judah lived in Kiriath-arba, Dibon, Jekabzeel, and their villages;
And of the Levites were divisions in Judah, and in Benjamin.
And some divisions of the Levites of Judah settled in Benjamin.
Moreover the Levites: Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah,
Judah, and Mattaniah, which was over the
thanksgiving, he and his brethren.
The Levites were Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah,
Judah, and Mattaniah, who, with his associates, led the songs of
thanksgiving.
Then I brought up the princes of
Judah upon the wall, and appointed two great companies of them that gave
thanks,
whereof one went on the right hand upon the wall toward the dung gate:
Then I brought the leaders of
Judah up on the wall, and I appointed two great
thanksgiving choirs. One was to proceed along the top of the wall to the right, toward the Dung Gate.
And after them went Hoshaiah, and half of the princes of Judah,
Hoshaiah and half the leaders of Judah followed,
Judah, and Benjamin, and Shemaiah, and Jeremiah,
Judah, Benjamin, Shemaiah, Jeremiah,
And his brethren, Shemaiah, and Azarael, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethaneel, and
Judah, Hanani, with the musical instruments of David the man of God, and
Ezra the
scribe before them.
and his associates—Shemaiah, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethanel,
Judah, and Hanani—with the musical instruments prescribed by David the man of God.
Ezra the
scribe led the
procession.
And at that time were some appointed over the chambers for the treasures, for the offerings, for the firstfruits, and for the
tithes, to gather into them out of the fields of the cities the portions of the law for the priests and Levites: for
Judah rejoiced for the priests and for the Levites that waited.
And on that same day men were appointed over the rooms that housed the supplies, contributions, firstfruits, and
tithes. The portions specified by the Law for the priests and Levites were gathered into these storerooms from the fields of the villages, because
Judah rejoiced over the priests and Levites who were serving.
Then brought all
Judah the
tithe of the corn and the new wine and the oil unto the
treasuries.
and all Judah brought a tenth of the grain, new wine, and oil into the storerooms.
In those days saw I in
Judah some
treading winepresses on the sabbath, and bringing in
sheaves, and
lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I
testified against them in the day wherein they sold
victuals.
In those days I saw people in
Judah treading winepresses on the Sabbath and bringing in grain and loading it on
donkeys, along with wine, grapes, and figs. All kinds of goods were being brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. So I
warned them against selling food on that day.
There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, which brought fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.
Additionally, men of Tyre who lived there were importing fish and all kinds of
merchandise and selling them on the Sabbath to the people of
Judah in Jerusalem.
Then I
contended with the nobles of
Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and
profane the sabbath day?
Then I
rebuked the nobles of
Judah and asked, “What is this evil you are doing—
