And the city shall be
accursed, even it, and all that are therein, to the LORD: only
Rahab the
harlot shall
live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she
hid the messengers that we sent.
Now the city and everything in it must be devoted to the LORD for destruction. Only
Rahab the
prostitute and all those with her in her house will
live, because she
hid the
spies we sent.
And Joshua saved
Rahab the
harlot alive, and her father’s household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day; because she
hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to
spy out
Jericho.
And Joshua
spared Rahab the
prostitute, with her father’s household and all who belonged to her, because she
hid the men Joshua had sent to
spy out
Jericho. So she has
lived among the Israelites to this day.
For the
Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall
environ us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what
wilt thou do unto thy great name?
When the
Canaanites and all who
live in the land hear about this, they will
surround us and
wipe out our name from the earth. Then what will You do for Your great name?”
And thou shalt do to
Ai and her king as thou
didst unto
Jericho and her king: only the
spoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall ye take for a prey unto
yourselves: lay thee an
ambush for the city behind it.
For Joshua drew not his hand back,
wherewith he stretched out the
spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of
Ai.
Joshua did not draw back the hand that held his battle
lance until he had devoted to destruction all who
lived in
Ai.
There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were
conversant among them.
There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded that Joshua failed to read before the whole assembly of Israel, including the women, the little ones, and the foreigners who lived among them.
And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them
live: and the princes of the congregation
sware unto them.
And Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them
live, and the leaders of the congregation
swore an oath to them.
This we will do to them; we will even let them
live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we
sware unto them.
This is how we will treat them: We will let them
live, so that no wrath will fall on us because of the oath we
swore to them.”
And the princes said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them.
They continued, “Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water carriers for the whole congregation.” So the leaders kept their promise.
And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye
beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?
Then Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said, “Why did you
deceive us by telling us you
live far away from us, when in fact you
live among us?
And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the LORD thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were
sore afraid of our
lives because of you, and have done this thing.
The Gibeonites answered, “Your servants were told clearly that the LORD your God had commanded His servant Moses to give you all the land and
wipe out all its inhabitants before you. So we greatly feared for our
lives because of you, and that is why we have done this.
And all the
spoil of these cities, and the cattle, the children of Israel took for a prey unto themselves; but every man they
smote with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them, neither left they any to
breathe.
The Israelites took for themselves all the
plunder and
livestock of these cities, but they put all the people to the sword until they had completely destroyed them, not
sparing anyone who breathed.
Sihon king of the
Amorites, who dwelt in
Heshbon, and ruled from Aroer, which is upon the bank of the river
Arnon, and from the middle of the river, and from half
Gilead, even unto the river
Jabbok, which is the border of the children of
Ammon;
And all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the
Amorites, which reigned in
Heshbon, whom Moses
smote with the princes of
Midian, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, which were dukes of Sihon, dwelling in the country.
all the cities of the plateau and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the
Amorites, who reigned in
Heshbon until Moses killed him and the chiefs of
Midian (Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba), the princes of Sihon who
lived in the land.
For the children of Joseph were two tribes,
Manasseh and Ephraim: therefore they gave no part unto the Levites in the land, save cities to dwell in, with their suburbs for their cattle and for their substance.
The descendants of Joseph became two tribes,
Manasseh and Ephraim. And no portion of the land was given to the Levites, except for cities in which to
live, along with pasturelands for their flocks and herds.
As for the Jebusites the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah could not drive them out: but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at Jerusalem unto this day.
But the descendants of Judah could not drive out the Jebusites living in Jerusalem. So to this day the Jebusites live there among the descendants of Judah.
But they did not drive out the
Canaanites who
lived in
Gezer. So the
Canaanites dwell among the Ephraimites to this day, but they are forced laborers.
And the children of Joseph said, The hill is not enough for us: and all the
Canaanites that dwell in the land of the valley have
chariots of iron, both they who are of Beth-shean and her towns, and they who are of the valley of
Jezreel.
“The hill country is not enough for us,” they replied, “and all the
Canaanites who
live in the valley have iron
chariots, both in Beth-shean with its towns and in the Valley of
Jezreel.”
And when he that
doth flee unto one of those cities shall stand at the entering of the gate of the city, and shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city, they shall take him into the city unto them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them.
When someone flees to one of these cities, stands at the entrance of the city gate, and states his case before its elders, they are to bring him into the city and give him a place to live among them.
And they spake unto them at
Shiloh in the land of
Canaan, saying, The LORD commanded by the hand of Moses to give us cities to dwell in, with the suburbs thereof for our cattle.
at
Shiloh in the land of
Canaan and said to them, “The LORD commanded through Moses that we be given cities in which to
live, together with pasturelands for our
livestock.”
And he spake unto them, saying, Return with much riches unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and with iron, and with very much
raiment: divide the
spoil of your enemies with your brethren.
saying, “Return to your homes with your great wealth, with immense herds of
livestock, with silver, gold, bronze, iron, and very many clothes. Divide with your brothers the
spoil of your enemies.”
And the thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and did not intend to go up against them in battle, to destroy the land wherein the children of
Reuben and
Gad dwelt.
The Israelites were satisfied with the report, and they blessed God and spoke no more about going to war against them to destroy the land where the Reubenites and Gadites lived.
And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor: and they served other gods.
And Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Long ago your fathers, including Terah the father of Abraham and
Nahor,
lived beyond the Euphrates and worshiped other gods.
And when they
cried unto the LORD, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes have seen what I have done in Egypt: and ye dwelt in the wilderness a long season.
So your fathers
cried out to the LORD, and He put darkness between you and the Egyptians, over whom He brought the sea and
engulfed them. Your very eyes saw what I did to the Egyptians. Then you
lived in the wilderness for a long time.
And I brought you into the land of the
Amorites, which dwelt on the other side Jordan; and they fought with you: and I gave them into your hand, that ye might possess their land; and I destroyed them from before you.
Later, I brought you to the land of the
Amorites who
lived beyond the Jordan. They fought against you, but I delivered them into your hand, that you should possess their land when I destroyed them before you.
And I have given you a land for which ye did not labour, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat.
So I gave you a land on which you did not
toil and cities that you did not build, and now you
live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.’
And the LORD
drave out from before us all the people, even the
Amorites which dwelt in the land: therefore will we also serve the LORD; for he is our God.
And the LORD drove out before us all the nations, including the
Amorites who
lived in the land. We too will serve the LORD, because He is our God!”
And the children of the Kenite, Moses’ father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of
Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.
Now the descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, the Kenite, went up with the men of Judah from the City of Palms to the Wilderness of Judah in the Negev near
Arad. They went to
live among the people.
And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.
The Benjamites, however, failed to drive out the Jebusites living in Jerusalem. So to this day the Jebusites live there among the Benjamites.
Neither did
Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the
Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.
Zebulun failed to drive out the inhabitants of Kitron and Nahalol; so the
Canaanites lived among them and served as forced laborers.
But the Asherites dwelt among the
Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out.
So the Asherites
lived among the
Canaanite inhabitants of the land, because they did not drive them out.
Neither did
Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath; but he dwelt among the
Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became tributaries unto them.
Naphtali failed to drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath. So the Naphtalites also
lived among the
Canaanite inhabitants of the land, but the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath served them as forced laborers.
And the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin king of
Canaan, that reigned in Hazor; the captain of whose host was Sisera, which dwelt in
Harosheth of the Gentiles.
So the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin king of
Canaan, who reigned in Hazor. The commander of his forces was Sisera, who
lived in
Harosheth-hagoyim.
Zebulun was a people who risked their
lives;
Naphtali, too, on the heights of the battlefield.
For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; for both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it.
For the Midianites came with their
livestock and their tents like a great
swarm of locusts. They and their camels were innumerable, and they entered the land to
ravage it.
And he said, They were my brethren, even the sons of my mother: as the LORD
liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not
slay you.
“They were my brothers,”
Gideon replied, “the sons of my mother! As surely as the LORD
lives, if you had let them
live, I would not kill you.”
And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of
Abimelech his brother.
Then Jotham ran away, escaping to Beer, and he
lived there for fear of his brother
Abimelech.
And after
Abimelech there arose to defend Israel
Tola the son of Puah, the son of
Dodo, a man of
Issachar; and he dwelt in Shamir in mount Ephraim.
After the time of
Abimelech, a man of
Issachar,
Tola son of Puah, the son of
Dodo, rose up to save Israel. He
lived in Shamir, in the hill country of Ephraim.
And the people and princes of
Gilead said one to another, What man is he that will begin to fight against the children of
Ammon? he shall be head over all the inhabitants of
Gilead.
And the elders of
Gilead said unto
Jephthah, Therefore we turn again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of
Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of
Gilead.
They answered
Jephthah, “This is why we now turn to you, that you may go with us, fight the
Ammonites, and become leader over all of us who
live in
Gilead.”
While Israel dwelt in
Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in all the cities that be along by the coasts of
Arnon, three hundred years? why therefore did ye not recover them within that time?
For three hundred years Israel has
lived in
Heshbon, Aroer, and their villages, as well as all the cities along the banks of the
Arnon. Why did you not take them back during that time?
And
Micah consecrated the
Levite; and the young man became his priest, and was in the house of
Micah.
Micah ordained the
Levite, and the young man became his priest and
lived in his house.
So they turned and departed, and put the little ones and the cattle and the carriage before them.
Putting their small children, their
livestock, and their possessions in front of them, they turned and departed.
And the children of
Dan said unto him, Let not thy voice be heard among us, lest
angry fellows run upon thee, and thou lose thy life, with the
lives of thy household.
The Danites said to him, “Do not raise your voice against us, or
angry men will attack you, and you and your family will lose your
lives.”
And there was no deliverer, because it was far from Zidon, and they had no business with any man; and it was in the valley that lieth by Beth-rehob. And they built a city, and dwelt therein.
There was no one to deliver them, because the city was far from
Sidon and had no alliance with
anyone; it was in a valley near Beth-rehob. And the Danites rebuilt the city and
lived there.
And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain
Levite sojourning on the side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a
concubine out of Bethlehemjudah.
Now in those days, when there was no king in Israel, a
Levite who
lived in the remote hill country of Ephraim took for himself a
concubine from
Bethlehem in Judah.
And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other
Ruth: and they dwelled there about ten years.
who took
Moabite women as their wives, one named Orpah and the other named
Ruth. And after they had
lived in Moab about ten years,
And
Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for
whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will
lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:
But
Ruth replied: “Do not
urge me to leave you or to turn from following you. For wherever you go, I will go, and wherever you
live, I will
live; your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.
So she kept fast by the maidens of Boaz to
glean unto the end of barley harvest and of wheat harvest; and dwelt with her mother in law.
So
Ruth stayed close to the servant girls of Boaz to
glean grain until the barley and wheat harvests were finished. And she
lived with her mother-in-law.
Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform unto thee the part of a
kinsman, well; let him do the
kinsman’s part: but if he will not do the part of a
kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a
kinsman to thee, as the LORD
liveth: lie down until the morning.
Stay here
tonight, and in the morning, if he wants to
redeem you, good. Let him
redeem you. But if he does not want to
redeem you, as surely as the LORD
lives, I will. Now lie here until morning.”
And she said, Oh my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the LORD.
“Please, my lord,” said
Hannah, “as surely as you
live, my lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the LORD.
Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there.
I now
dedicate the boy to the LORD. For as long as he
lives, he is dedicated to the LORD.” So they worshiped the LORD there.
And one of the same place answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a
proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?
Then a man who
lived there replied, “And who is their father?” So the saying became a
proverb: “Is Saul also among the prophets?”
And Samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom the LORD hath chosen, that there is none like him among all the people? And all the people
shouted, and said, God save the king.
Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see the one the LORD has chosen? There is no one like him among all the people.” And all the people
shouted, “Long
live the king!”
For, as the LORD
liveth, which saveth Israel, though it be in
Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people that answered him.
As surely as the LORD who saves Israel
lives, even if it is my son
Jonathan, he must die!” But not one of the troops said a word.
And the people said unto Saul, Shall
Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? God
forbid: as the LORD
liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. So the people
rescued Jonathan, that he died not.
But the people said to Saul, “Must
Jonathan die—he who accomplished such a great
deliverance for Israel? Never! As surely as the LORD
lives, not a hair of his head will fall to the ground, for with God’s help he has accomplished this
today.” So the people
rescued Jonathan, and he did not die.
And when Saul saw David go forth against the
Philistine, he said unto
Abner, the captain of the host,
Abner, whose son is this youth? And
Abner said, As thy soul
liveth, O king, I cannot tell.
As Saul had watched David going out to
confront the
Philistine, he said to
Abner the commander of the army, “
Abner, whose son is this young man?” “As surely as you
live, O king,”
Abner replied, “I do not know.”
Saul
listened to the voice of
Jonathan and
swore an oath: “As surely as the LORD
lives, David will not be put to death.”
And David
sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not
Jonathan know this, lest he be
grieved: but truly as the LORD
liveth, and as thy soul
liveth, there is but a step between me and death.
But David again
vowed, “Your father knows very well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he has said, ‘
Jonathan must not know of this, or he will be
grieved.’ As surely as the LORD
lives and as you
yourself live, there is but a step between me and death.”
And thou shalt not only while yet I
live shew me the kindness of the LORD, that I die not:
And as long as I live, treat me with the LORD’s loving devotion, that I may not die,
And, behold, I will send a
lad, saying, Go, find out the arrows. If I expressly say unto the
lad, Behold, the arrows are on this side of thee, take them; then come thou: for there is peace to thee, and no
hurt; as the LORD
liveth.
Then I will send a boy and say, ‘Go, find the arrows!’ Now, if I expressly say to him, ‘Look, the arrows are on this side of you; bring them,’ then come, because as surely as the LORD lives, it is safe for you and there is no danger.
For as long as the son of
Jesse liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and
fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die.
For as long as the son of
Jesse lives on this earth, neither you nor your
kingship shall be established. Now send for him and bring him to me, for he must surely die!”
And David said unto
Abiathar, I knew it that day, when Doeg the
Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul: I have occasioned the death of all the persons of thy father’s house.
Then David said to
Abiathar, “I knew that Doeg the
Edomite was there that day, and that he was sure to tell Saul. I myself am responsible for the
lives of
everyone in your father’s house.
So David and his men went to Keilah, and fought with the Philistines, and brought away their cattle, and
smote them with a great slaughter. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.
Then David and his men went to Keilah, fought against the Philistines, and carried off their
livestock, striking them with a mighty blow. So David saved the people of Keilah.
And David went up from thence, and dwelt in strong holds at En-gedi.
And David went up from there and lived in the strongholds of En-gedi.
And thus shall ye say to him that liveth in prosperity, Peace be both to thee, and peace be to thine house, and peace be unto all that thou hast.
and say to him, ‘Long life to you, and peace to you and your house and to all that belongs to you.
But the men were very good unto us, and we were not
hurt, neither missed we any thing, as long as we were
conversant with them, when we were in the fields:
Yet these men were very good to us. When we were in the field, we were not
harassed, and nothing of ours went missing the whole time we
lived among them.
Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard this man of
Belial, even Nabal: for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I thine
handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom thou
didst send.
My lord should pay no attention to this
scoundrel Nabal, for he
lives up to his name: His name means
Fool, and folly accompanies him. I, your servant, did not see my lord’s young men whom you sent.
Now therefore, my lord, as the LORD
liveth, and as thy soul
liveth, seeing the LORD hath
withholden thee from coming to shed blood, and from
avenging thyself with thine own hand, now let thine enemies, and they that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal.
Now, my lord, as surely as the LORD
lives and you
yourself live, the LORD has held you back from coming to
bloodshed and
avenging yourself with your own hand. May your enemies and those who seek
harm for my lord be like Nabal.
I pray thee,
forgive the
trespass of thine
handmaid: for the LORD will certainly make my lord a sure house; because my lord fighteth the battles of the LORD, and evil hath not been found in thee all thy days.
Please
forgive your servant’s
offense, for the LORD will surely make a lasting dynasty for my lord, because he fights the LORD’s battles. May no evil be found in you as long as you
live.
Yet a man is risen to pursue thee, and to seek thy soul: but the soul of my lord shall be bound in the
bundle of life with the LORD thy God; and the souls of thine enemies, them shall he
sling out, as out of the middle of a
sling.
And should someone pursue you and seek your life, then the life of my lord will be bound securely by the LORD your God in the
bundle of the living. But He shall
fling away the
lives of your enemies like stones from a
sling.
For in very deed, as the LORD God of Israel
liveth, which hath kept me back from
hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall.
Otherwise, as surely as the LORD, the God of Israel,
lives, who has restrained me from
harming you, if you had not come quickly to meet me, then surely no male belonging to Nabal would have been left alive by morning light.”
David said
furthermore, As the LORD
liveth, the LORD shall
smite him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall descend into battle, and perish.
David added, “As surely as the LORD lives, the LORD Himself will strike him down; either his day will come and he will die, or he will go into battle and perish.
This thing is not good that thou hast done. As the LORD
liveth, ye are worthy to die, because ye have not kept your master, the LORD’S
anointed. And now see where the king’s
spear is, and the
cruse of water that was at his
bolster.
This thing you have done is not good. As surely as the LORD
lives, all of you deserve to die, since you did not protect your lord, the LORD’s
anointed. Now look around. Where are the king’s
spear and water
jug that were by his head?”
And David said unto Achish, If I have now found grace in thine eyes, let them give me a place in some town in the country, that I may dwell there: for why should thy servant dwell in the royal city with thee?
Then David said to Achish, “If I have found favor in your eyes, let me be assigned a place in one of the outlying towns, so I can live there. For why should your servant live in the royal city with you?”
And the time that David dwelt in the country of the Philistines was a full year and four months.
And the time that David
lived in
Philistine territory amounted to a year and four months.
And David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring
tidings to
Gath, saying, Lest they should tell on us, saying, So did David, and so will be his manner all the while he dwelleth in the country of the Philistines.
David did not leave a man or woman alive to be brought to
Gath, for he said, “Otherwise they will report us, saying, ‘This is what David did.’” And this was David’s custom the whole time he
lived in
Philistine territory.
And Saul
sware to her by the LORD, saying, As the LORD
liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing.
Then Saul
swore to her by the LORD: “As surely as the LORD
lives, no punishment shall come upon you for this.”
Then Achish called David, and said unto him, Surely, as the LORD liveth, thou hast been upright, and thy going out and thy coming in with me in the host is good in my sight: for I have not found evil in thee since the day of thy coming unto me unto this day: nevertheless the lords favour thee not.
So Achish summoned David and told him, “As surely as the LORD lives, you have been upright in my sight, and it seems right that you should march in and out with me in the army, because I have found no fault in you from the day you came to me until this day. But you have no favor in the sight of the leaders.
And David took all the flocks and the herds, which they
drave before those other cattle, and said, This is David’s
spoil.
And he recovered all the flocks and herds, which his men drove
ahead of the other
livestock, calling out, “This is David’s
plunder!”
So I stood upon him, and
slew him, because I was sure that he could not
live after that he was fallen: and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the
bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them
hither unto my lord.
So I stood over him and killed him, because I knew that after he had fallen he could not
survive. And I took the crown that was on his head and the band that was on his arm, and I have brought them here to my lord.”
Saul and
Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their
lives, and in their death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.
Saul and
Jonathan, beloved and delightful in life, were not divided in death. They were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.
And
Joab said, As God
liveth, unless thou hadst spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone up every one from following his brother.
“As surely as God
lives,”
Joab replied, “if you had not spoken up, the troops would have continued pursuing their brothers until morning.”
And the Beerothites fled to Gittaim, and were sojourners there until this day.)
because the Beerothites fled to Gittaim and have lived there as foreigners to this day.
And David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of
Rimmon the Beerothite, and said unto them, As the LORD
liveth, who hath redeemed my soul out of all
adversity,
But David answered Rechab and his brother Baanah, the sons of
Rimmon the Beerothite, “As surely as the LORD
lives, who has redeemed my life from all distress,
So Mephibosheth dwelt in Jerusalem: for he did eat continually at the king’s table; and was
lame on both his feet.
So Mephibosheth
lived in Jerusalem, because he always
ate at the king’s table, and he was
lame in both feet.
And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah,
abide in tents; and my lord
Joab, and the servants of my lord, are
encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou
livest, and as thy soul
liveth, I will not do this thing.
Uriah answered, “The ark and Israel and Judah are dwelling in tents, and my master
Joab and his soldiers are camped in the open field. How can I go to my house to eat and drink and sleep with my wife? As surely as you
live, and as your soul
lives, I will not do such a thing!”
And David’s anger was greatly
kindled against the man; and he said to
Nathan, As the LORD
liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely die:
David burned with anger against the man and said to
Nathan: “As surely as the LORD
lives, the man who did this deserves to die!
And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and
wept: for I said, Who can tell whether GOD will be
gracious to me, that the child may
live?
David answered, “While the child was alive, I fasted and
wept, for I said, ‘Who knows? The LORD may be
gracious to me and let him
live.’
And
Absalom her brother said unto her, Hath Amnon thy brother been with thee? but hold now thy peace, my sister: he is thy brother; regard not this thing. So Tamar remained
desolate in her brother
Absalom’s house.
Her brother
Absalom said to her, “Has your brother Amnon been with you? Be quiet for now, my sister. He is your brother. Do not take this thing to heart.” So Tamar
lived as a
desolate woman in the house of her brother
Absalom.
Then said she, I pray thee, let the king remember the LORD thy God, that thou wouldest not suffer the revengers of blood to destroy any more, lest they destroy my son. And he said, As the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of thy son fall to the earth.
“Please,” she replied, “may the king
invoke the LORD your God to prevent the
avenger of blood from increasing the
devastation, so that my son may not be destroyed!” “As surely as the LORD
lives,” he
vowed, “not a hair of your son’s head will fall to the ground.”
And the king said, Is not the hand of
Joab with thee in all this? And the woman answered and said, As thy soul
liveth, my lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left from ought that my lord the king hath spoken: for thy servant
Joab, he
bade me, and he put all these words in the mouth of thine
handmaid:
So the king asked, “Is the hand of
Joab behind all this?” The woman answered, “As surely as you
live, my lord the king, no one can turn to the right or to the left from anything that my lord the king says.
Yes, your servant
Joab is the one who gave me orders; he told your
maidservant exactly what to say.
So
Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem, and saw not the king’s face.
Now
Absalom lived in Jerusalem two years without seeing the face of the king.
And Ittai answered the king, and said, As the LORD liveth, and as my lord the king liveth, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will thy servant be.
But Ittai answered the king, “As surely as the LORD lives, and as my lord the king lives, wherever my lord the king may be, whether it means life or death, there will your servant be!”
And it came to pass, when Hushai the Archite, David’s friend, was come unto
Absalom, that Hushai said unto
Absalom, God save the king, God save the king.
And David’s friend Hushai the Archite went to
Absalom and said to him, “Long
live the king! Long
live the king!”
And
Joab came into the house to the king, and said, Thou hast shamed this day the faces of all thy servants, which this day have saved thy life, and the
lives of thy sons and of thy daughters, and the
lives of thy wives, and the
lives of thy concubines;
Then
Joab went into the house and said to the king, “
Today you have disgraced all your servants who have saved your life and the
lives of your sons and daughters, of your wives, and of your concubines.
In that thou lovest thine enemies, and hatest thy friends. For thou hast declared this day, that thou regardest neither princes nor servants: for this day I perceive, that if
Absalom had
lived, and all we had died this day, then it had pleased thee well.
You love those who
hate you and
hate those who love you! For you have made it clear
today that the commanders and soldiers mean nothing to you. I know
today that if
Absalom were alive and all of us were dead, it would have pleased you!
