For the children of Israel and the children of Judah have only done evil before me from their youth: for the children of Israel have only
provoked me to anger with the work of their hands, saith the LORD.
For the children of Israel and of Judah have done
nothing but evil in My sight from their youth; indeed, they have done
nothing but
provoke Me to anger by the work of their hands, declares the LORD.
And they have turned unto me the back, and
not the face: though I taught them, rising up early and teaching them, yet they have
not hearkened to receive instruction.
They have turned their backs to Me and
not their faces. Though I taught them again and again, they would
not listen or
respond to discipline.
And they built the high places of
Baal, which are in the valley of the son of
Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire unto
Molech; which I commanded them
not, neither came it into my mind, that they should do this
abomination, to cause Judah to sin.
They have built the high places of
Baal in the Valley of
Hinnom to make their sons and daughters pass through the fire to
Molech—something I never commanded them, nor had it ever entered My mind, that they should commit such an
abomination and cause Judah to sin.
And I will make an
everlasting covenant with them, that I will
not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall
not depart from me.
I will make an
everlasting covenant with them: I will never turn away from doing good to them, and I will put My fear in their hearts, so that they will never turn away from Me.
Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and
shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest
not.
Call to Me, and I will answer and show you great and unsearchable things you do not know.
Thus saith the LORD; If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season;
“This is what the LORD says: If you can break My covenant with the day and My covenant with the night, so that day and night cease to occupy their appointed time,
Then may also my covenant be broken with David my servant, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests, my ministers.
then My covenant may also be broken with David My servant and with My ministers the Levites who are priests, so that David will not have a son to reign on his throne.
Considerest thou
not what this people have spoken, saying, The two families which the LORD hath chosen, he hath even cast them off? thus they have
despised my people, that they should be no more a nation before them.
“Have you
not noticed what these people are saying: ‘The LORD has rejected the two families He had chosen’? So they
despise My people and no longer regard them as a nation.
Thus saith the LORD; If my covenant be not with day and night, and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth;
This is what the LORD says: If I have not established My covenant with the day and the night and the fixed order of heaven and earth,
Then will I cast away the seed of Jacob, and David my servant, so that I will not take any of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: for I will cause their captivity to return, and have mercy on them.
then I would also
reject the descendants of Jacob and of My servant David, so as
not to take from his descendants rulers over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. For I will restore them from captivity and will have
compassion on them.”
And thou shalt not escape out of his hand, but shalt surely be taken, and delivered into his hand; and thine eyes shall behold the eyes of the king of Babylon, and he shall speak with thee mouth to mouth, and thou shalt go to Babylon.
And you
yourself will
not escape his
grasp, but will surely be captured and delivered into his hand. You will see the king of Babylon eye to eye and speak with him face to face; and you will go to Babylon.
Yet hear the word of the LORD, O
Zedekiah king of Judah; Thus saith the LORD of thee, Thou shalt
not die by the sword:
Yet hear the word of the LORD, O
Zedekiah king of Judah. This is what the LORD says concerning you: You will
not die by the sword;
At the end of seven years let ye go every man his brother an Hebrew, which hath been sold unto thee; and when he hath served thee six years, thou shalt let him go free from thee: but your fathers
hearkened not unto me, neither inclined their ear.
Every seventh year, each of you must free his Hebrew brother who has sold himself to you. He may serve you six years, but then you must let him go free. But your fathers did
not listen or
incline their ear.
Therefore thus saith the LORD; Ye have
not hearkened unto me, in
proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother, and every man to his neighbour: behold, I
proclaim a liberty for you, saith the LORD, to the sword, to the
pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.
Therefore this is what the LORD says: You have
not obeyed Me; you have
not proclaimed freedom, each man for his brother and for his
neighbor. So now I
proclaim freedom for you, declares the LORD—freedom to fall by sword, by plague, and by famine! I will make you a
horror to all the kingdoms of the earth.
And I will give the men that have
transgressed my covenant, which have
not performed the words of the covenant which they had made before me, when they cut the
calf in
twain, and passed between the parts thereof,
And those who have
transgressed My covenant and have
not fulfilled the terms of the covenant they made before Me, I will treat like the
calf they cut in two in order to pass between its pieces.
But they said, We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons for ever:
“We do
not drink wine,” they replied, “for our
forefather Jonadab son of Rechab commanded us, ‘Neither you nor your descendants are ever to drink wine.
Neither shall ye build house, nor
sow seed, nor plant
vineyard, nor have any: but all your days ye shall dwell in tents; that ye may live many days in the land where ye be strangers.
Nor are you ever to build a house or
sow seed or plant a
vineyard. Those things are
not for you. Instead, you must live in tents all your lives, so that you may live a long time in the land where you
wander.’
Thus have we obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab our father in all that he hath charged us, to drink no wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons, nor our daughters;
And we have obeyed the voice of our
forefather Jonadab son of Rechab in all he commanded us. So we have
not drunk wine all our lives—neither we nor our wives nor our sons and daughters.
Nor to build houses for us to dwell in: neither have we
vineyard, nor field, nor seed:
Nor have we built houses in which to live, and we have not owned any vineyards or fields or crops.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Go and tell the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, Will ye
not receive instruction to
hearken to my words? saith the LORD.
“This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Go and tell the men of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem: ‘Will you not accept discipline and obey My words?’ declares the LORD.
The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab, that he commanded his sons
not to drink wine, are performed; for unto this day they drink none, but obey their father’s commandment:
notwithstanding I have spoken unto you, rising early and speaking; but ye
hearkened not unto me.
The words of Jonadab son of Rechab have been carried out. He commanded his sons
not to drink wine, and they have
not drunk it to this very day because they have obeyed the command of their
forefather. But I have spoken to you again and again, and you have
not obeyed Me!
I have sent also unto you all my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, Return ye now every man from his evil way, and
amend your doings, and go
not after other gods to serve them, and ye shall dwell in the land which I have given to you and to your fathers: but ye have
not inclined your ear, nor
hearkened unto me.
Again and again I have sent you all My servants the prophets,
proclaiming: ‘Turn now, each of you, from your wicked ways, and correct your actions. Do
not go after other gods to serve them. Live in the land that I have given to you and your fathers.’ But you have
not inclined your ear or
listened to Me.
Because the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed the commandment of their father, which he commanded them; but this people hath
not hearkened unto me:
Yes, the sons of Jonadab son of Rechab carried out the command their
forefather gave them, but these people have
not listened to Me.
Therefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I have pronounced against them: because I have spoken unto them, but they have not heard; and I have called unto them, but they have not answered.
Therefore this is what the LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Behold, I will bring to Judah and to all the residents of Jerusalem all the
disaster I have pronounced against them, because I have spoken to them but they have
not obeyed, and I have called to them but they have
not answered.’”
Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever.
this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Jonadab son of Rechab will never fail to have a man to stand before Me.’”
Yet they were not afraid, nor rent their garments, neither the king, nor any of his servants that heard all these words.
Yet in hearing all these words, the king and his servants did
not become
frightened or
tear their garments.
Nevertheless Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah had made
intercession to the king that he would
not burn the roll: but he would
not hear them.
Even though Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah urged the king
not to burn the
scroll, he would
not listen to them.
And I will
punish him and his seed and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring upon them, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the men of Judah, all the evil that I have pronounced against them; but they
hearkened not.
I will
punish him and his descendants and servants for their iniquity. I will bring on them, on the residents of Jerusalem, and on the men of Judah, all the
calamity about which I
warned them but they did
not listen.”
Now Jeremiah came in and went out among the people: for they had not put him into prison.
Now Jeremiah was free to come and go among the people, for they had not yet put him in prison.
Thus saith the LORD;
Deceive not yourselves, saying, The Chaldeans shall surely depart from us: for they shall
not depart.
This is what the LORD says: Do
not deceive yourselves by saying, ‘The Chaldeans will go away for good,’ for they will
not!
Then said Jeremiah, It is false; I fall
not away to the Chaldeans. But he
hearkened not to him: so Irijah took Jeremiah, and brought him to the princes.
“That is a lie,” Jeremiah replied. “I am
not deserting to the Chaldeans!” But Irijah would
not listen to him; instead, he arrested Jeremiah and took him to the officials.
Where are now your prophets which
prophesied unto you, saying, The king of Babylon shall
not come against you, nor against this land?
Where are your prophets who
prophesied to you, claiming, ‘The king of Babylon will
not come against you or this land’?
Therefore hear now, I pray thee, O my lord the king: let my
supplication, I pray thee, be accepted before thee; that thou cause me
not to return to the house of
Jonathan the
scribe, lest I die there.
But now please
listen, O my lord the king. May my petition come before you. Do
not send me back to the house of
Jonathan the
scribe, or I will die there.”
Therefore the princes said unto the king, We
beseech thee, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh
not the
welfare of this people, but the
hurt.
Then the officials said to the king, “This man ought to die, for he is discouraging the warriors who remain in this city, as well as all the people, by speaking such words to them; this man is not seeking the well-being of these people, but their ruin.”
Then
Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand: for the king is
not he that can do any thing against you.
“Here he is,” replied King
Zedekiah. “He is in your hands, since the king can do
nothing to stop you.”
Then
Zedekiah the king sent, and took Jeremiah the prophet unto him into the third entry that is in the house of the LORD: and the king said unto Jeremiah, I will ask thee a thing; hide
nothing from me.
Then King
Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the prophet and received him at the third entrance to the house of the LORD. “I am going to ask you something,” said the king to Jeremiah. “Do
not hide anything from me.”
Then Jeremiah said unto
Zedekiah, If I declare it unto thee,
wilt thou
not surely put me to death? and if I give thee counsel,
wilt thou
not hearken unto me?
“If I tell you,” Jeremiah replied, “you will surely put me to death. And even if I give you advice, you will
not listen to me.”
So
Zedekiah the king
sware secretly unto Jeremiah, saying, As the LORD liveth, that made us this soul, I will
not put thee to death, neither will I give thee into the hand of these men that seek thy life.
But King
Zedekiah swore secretly to Jeremiah, “As surely as the LORD lives, who has given us this life, I will
not kill you, nor will I deliver you into the hands of these men who are seeking your life.”
Then said Jeremiah unto
Zedekiah, Thus saith the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; If thou
wilt assuredly go forth unto the king of Babylon’s princes, then thy soul shall live, and this city shall
not be burned with fire; and thou shalt live, and thine house:
Then Jeremiah said to
Zedekiah, “This is what the LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you indeed surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, then you will live, this city will
not be burned down, and you and your household will
survive.
But if thou
wilt not go forth to the king of Babylon’s princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and thou shalt
not escape out of their hand.
But if you do
not surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, then this city will be delivered into the hands of the Chaldeans. They will burn it down, and you
yourself will
not escape their
grasp.’”
But Jeremiah said, They shall
not deliver thee. Obey, I
beseech thee, the voice of the LORD, which I speak unto thee: so it shall be well unto thee, and thy soul shall live.
“They will not hand you over,” Jeremiah replied. “Obey the voice of the LORD in what I am telling you, that it may go well with you and you may live.
So they shall bring out all thy wives and thy children to the Chaldeans: and thou shalt not escape out of their hand, but shalt be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon: and thou shalt cause this city to be burned with fire.
All your wives and children will be brought out to the Chaldeans. And you
yourself will
not escape their
grasp, for you will be seized by the king of Babylon, and this city will be burned down.”
Then said
Zedekiah unto Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and thou shalt
not die.
But if the princes hear that I have talked with thee, and they come unto thee, and say unto thee, Declare unto us now what thou hast said unto the king, hide it not from us, and we will not put thee to death; also what the king said unto thee:
If the officials hear that I have spoken with you, and they come and demand of you, ‘Tell us what you said to the king and what he said to you; do not hide it from us, or we will kill you,’
Then thou shalt say unto them, I presented my
supplication before the king, that he would
not cause me to return to
Jonathan’s house, to die there.
then tell them, ‘I was presenting to the king my petition that he
not return me to the house of
Jonathan to die there.’”
Then came all the princes unto Jeremiah, and asked him: and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they left off speaking with him; for the matter was not perceived.
When all the officials came to Jeremiah and questioned him, he relayed to them the exact words the king had commanded him to say. So they said no more to him, for no one had overheard the conversation.
But Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard left of the poor of the people, which had nothing, in the land of Judah, and gave them vineyards and fields at the same time.
But Nebuzaradan left behind in the land of Judah some of the poor people who had no property, and at that time he gave them vineyards and fields.
Take him, and look well to him, and do him no
harm; but do unto him even as he shall say unto thee.
“Take him, look after him, and do
not let any
harm come to him; do for him whatever he says.”
Go and speak to Ebed-melech the
Ethiopian, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring my words upon this city for evil, and
not for good; and they shall be accomplished in that day before thee.
“Go and tell Ebed-melech the
Cushite that this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘I am about to
fulfill My words against this city for
harm and
not for good, and on that day they will be fulfilled before your eyes.
But I will deliver thee in that day, saith the LORD: and thou shalt not be given into the hand of the men of whom thou art afraid.
But I will deliver you on that day, declares the LORD, and you will not be delivered into the hands of the men whom you fear.
For I will surely deliver thee, and thou shalt not fall by the sword, but thy life shall be for a prey unto thee: because thou hast put thy trust in me, saith the LORD.
For I will surely
rescue you so that you do
not fall by the sword. Because you have trusted in Me, you will escape with your life like a
spoil of war, declares the LORD.’”
Now the LORD hath brought it, and done according as he hath said: because ye have
sinned against the LORD, and have
not obeyed his voice, therefore this thing is come upon you.
and now the LORD has fulfilled it; He has done just as He said. Because you people have
sinned against the LORD and have
not obeyed His voice, this thing has happened to you.
Now while he was
not yet gone back, he said, Go back also to Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon hath made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people: or go
wheresoever it seemeth convenient unto thee to go. So the captain of the guard gave him
victuals and a reward, and let him go.
But before Jeremiah turned to go, Nebuzaradan added, “Return to Gedaliah son of
Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed over the cities of Judah, and stay with him among the people, or go
anywhere else that seems right.” Then the captain of the guard gave him a
ration and a gift and released him.
Now when all the captains of the forces which were in the fields, even they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam governor in the land, and had committed unto him men, and women, and children, and of the poor of the land, of them that were
not carried away
captive to Babylon;
When all the commanders and men of the armies in the field heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah son of
Ahikam over the land and that he had put him in charge of the men, women, and children who were the poorest of the land and had
not been exiled to Babylon,
And Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam the son of Shaphan
sware unto them and to their men, saying, Fear
not to serve the Chaldeans: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you.
Gedaliah son of
Ahikam, the son of Shaphan,
swore an oath to them and their men,
assuring them, “Do
not be afraid to serve the Chaldeans. Live in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well with you.
And said unto him,
Dost thou certainly know that Baalis the king of the
Ammonites hath sent
Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to
slay thee? But Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam believed them
not.
and said to him, “Are you aware that Baalis king of the
Ammonites has sent
Ishmael son of Nethaniah to take your life?” But Gedaliah son of
Ahikam did
not believe them.
But Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam said unto Johanan the son of Kareah, Thou shalt
not do this thing: for thou speakest falsely of
Ishmael.
But Gedaliah son of
Ahikam said to Johanan son of Kareah, “Do
not do such a thing! What you are saying about
Ishmael is a lie.”
But ten men were found among them that said unto
Ishmael,
Slay us
not: for we have treasures in the field, of wheat, and of barley, and of oil, and of honey. So he
forbare, and
slew them
not among their brethren.
But ten of the men among them said to
Ishmael, “Do
not kill us, for we have hidden
treasure in the field—wheat, barley, oil, and honey!” So he
refrained from killing them with the others.
Then Jeremiah the prophet said unto them, I have heard you; behold, I will pray unto the LORD your God according to your words; and it shall come to pass, that
whatsoever thing the LORD shall answer you, I will declare it unto you; I will keep
nothing back from you.
“I have heard you,” replied Jeremiah the prophet. “I will surely pray to the LORD your God as you request, and I will tell you everything that the LORD answers; I will
not withhold a word from you.”
Then they said to Jeremiah, The LORD be a true and faithful witness between us, if we do not even according to all things for the which the LORD thy God shall send thee to us.
Then they said to Jeremiah, “May the LORD be a true and faithful witness against us if we do not act upon every word that the LORD your God sends you to tell us.
If ye will still
abide in this land, then will I build you, and
not pull you down, and I will plant you, and
not pluck you up: for I
repent me of the evil that I have done unto you.
‘If you will indeed stay in this land, then I will build you up and
not tear you down; I will plant you and
not uproot you, for I will relent of the
disaster I have brought upon you.
Be not afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom ye are afraid; be not afraid of him, saith the LORD: for I am with you to save you, and to deliver you from his hand.
Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon, whom you now fear; do not be afraid of him, declares the LORD, for I am with you to save you and deliver you from him.
But if ye say, We will not dwell in this land, neither obey the voice of the LORD your God,
But if you say, ‘We will not stay in this land,’ and you thus disobey the voice of the LORD your God,
Saying, No; but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we shall see no war, nor hear the sound of the
trumpet, nor have hunger of bread; and there will we dwell:
and if you say, ‘No, but we will go to the land of Egypt and live there, where we will not see war or hear the sound of the ram’s horn or hunger for bread,’
So shall it be with all the men that set their faces to go into Egypt to
sojourn there; they shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the
pestilence: and none of them shall remain or escape from the evil that I will bring upon them.
So all who
resolve to go to Egypt to reside there will die by sword and famine and plague.
Not one of them will
survive or escape the
disaster I will bring upon them.’
The LORD hath said concerning you, O ye
remnant of Judah; Go ye
not into Egypt: know certainly that I have
admonished you this day.
The LORD has told you, O
remnant of Judah, ‘Do
not go to Egypt.’ Know for sure that I have
warned you
today!
And now I have this day declared it to you; but ye have not obeyed the voice of the LORD your God, nor any thing for the which he hath sent me unto you.
For I have told you
today, but you have
not obeyed the voice of the LORD your God in all He has sent me to tell you.
Then spake
Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the proud men, saying unto Jeremiah, Thou speakest falsely: the LORD our God hath
not sent thee to say, Go
not into Egypt to
sojourn there:
Azariah son of Hoshaiah, Johanan son of Kareah, and all the
arrogant men said to Jeremiah, “You are lying! The LORD our God has
not sent you to say, ‘You must
not go to Egypt to reside there.’
So Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces, and all the people, obeyed not the voice of the LORD, to dwell in the land of Judah.
So Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces disobeyed the command of the LORD to stay in the land of Judah.
So they came into the land of Egypt: for they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: thus came they even to Tahpanhes.
So they entered the land of Egypt because they did not obey the voice of the LORD, and they went as far as Tahpanhes.
Because of their wickedness which they have committed to
provoke me to anger, in that they went to burn incense, and to serve other gods, whom they knew
not, neither they, ye, nor your fathers.
because of the evil they have done. They
provoked Me to anger by continuing to burn incense and to serve other gods that neither they nor you nor your fathers ever knew.
Howbeit I sent unto you all my servants the prophets, rising early and sending them, saying, Oh, do
not this
abominable thing that I
hate.
Yet I sent you all My servants the prophets again and again, saying: ‘Do
not do this
detestable thing that I
hate.’
But they
hearkened not, nor inclined their ear to turn from their wickedness, to burn no incense unto other gods.
But they did
not listen or
incline their ears; they did
not turn from their wickedness or stop burning incense to other gods.
They are not humbled even unto this day, neither have they feared, nor walked in my law, nor in my statutes, that I set before you and before your fathers.
To this day they have not humbled themselves or shown reverence, nor have they followed My instruction or the statutes that I set before you and your fathers.
As for the word that thou hast spoken unto us in the name of the LORD, we will
not hearken unto thee.
“As for the word you have spoken to us in the name of the LORD, we will
not listen to you!
The incense that ye burned in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, ye, and your fathers, your kings, and your princes, and the people of the land, did not the LORD remember them, and came it not into his mind?
“As for the incense you burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem—you, your fathers, your kings, your officials, and the people of the land—did the LORD not remember and bring this to mind?
Because ye have burned incense, and because ye have
sinned against the LORD, and have
not obeyed the voice of the LORD, nor walked in his law, nor in his statutes, nor in his
testimonies; therefore this evil is happened unto you, as at this day.
Because you burned incense and
sinned against the LORD, and did
not obey the voice of the LORD or walk in His instruction, His statutes, and His
testimonies, this
disaster has
befallen you, as you see
today.”
Behold, I will watch over them for evil, and not for good: and all the men of Judah that are in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by the famine, until there be an end of them.
I am watching over them for
harm and
not for good, and every man of Judah who is in the land of Egypt will meet his end by sword or famine, until they are finished off.
And seekest thou great things for
thyself? seek them
not: for, behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh, saith the LORD: but thy life will I give unto thee for a prey in all places
whither thou goest.
But as for you, do you seek great things for
yourself? Stop seeking! For I will bring
disaster on every living creature, declares the LORD, but wherever you go, I will grant your life as a
spoil of war.”
Wherefore have I seen them dismayed and turned away back? and their mighty ones are beaten down, and are fled
apace, and look
not back: for fear was round about, saith the LORD.
Why am I seeing this? They are
terrified, they are retreating; their warriors are defeated, they
flee in
haste without looking back; terror is on every side!” declares the LORD.
Let
not the swift
flee away, nor the mighty man escape; they shall
stumble, and fall toward the north by the river Euphrates.
“The swift cannot
flee, and the
warrior cannot escape! In the north by the River Euphrates they
stumble and fall.
Go up into
Gilead, and take
balm, O virgin, the daughter of Egypt: in vain shalt thou use many medicines; for thou shalt
not be cured.
Why are thy
valiant men swept away? they stood
not, because the LORD did drive them.
Why have your warriors been laid low? They cannot stand, for the LORD has thrust them down.
Also her
hired men are in the midst of her like
fatted bullocks; for they also are turned back, and are fled away together: they did
not stand, because the day of their
calamity was come upon them, and the time of their
visitation.
Even the
mercenaries among her are like
fattened calves. They too will turn back; together they will
flee, they will
not stand their ground, for the day of
calamity is coming upon them— the time of their punishment.
But fear
not thou, O my servant Jacob, and be
not dismayed, O Israel: for, behold, I will save thee from
afar off, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and be in rest and at ease, and none shall make him afraid.
But you, O Jacob My servant, do not be afraid, and do not be dismayed, O Israel. For I will surely save you out of a distant place, your descendants from the land of their captivity! Jacob will return to quiet and ease, with no one to make him afraid.
Fear thou
not, O Jacob my servant, saith the LORD: for I am with thee; for I will make a full end of all the nations
whither I have driven thee: but I will
not make a full end of thee, but correct thee in measure; yet will I
not leave thee wholly unpunished.
And you, My servant Jacob, do not be afraid, declares the LORD, for I am with you. Though I will completely destroy all the nations to which I have banished you, I will not completely destroy you. Yet I will discipline you justly, and will by no means leave you unpunished.”
At the noise of the stamping of the
hoofs of his strong horses, at the
rushing of his
chariots, and at the
rumbling of his wheels, the fathers shall
not look back to their children for feebleness of hands;
And the
spoiler shall come upon every city, and no city shall escape: the valley also shall perish, and the plain shall be destroyed, as the LORD hath spoken.
The destroyer will move against every city, and not one town will escape. The valley will also be ruined, and the high plain will be destroyed, as the LORD has said.
Moab hath been at ease from his youth, and he hath settled on his
lees, and hath
not been
emptied from vessel to vessel, neither hath he gone into captivity: therefore his taste remained in him, and his
scent is
not changed.
Moab has been at ease from youth, settled like wine on its
dregs; he has
not been poured from vessel to vessel or gone into exile. So his
flavor has remained the same, and his
aroma is unchanged.
For was
not Israel a
derision unto thee? was he found among
thieves? for since thou spakest of him, thou skippedst for joy.
Was
not Israel your object of
ridicule? Was he ever found among
thieves? For whenever you speak of him you
shake your head.
I know his wrath, saith the LORD; but it shall not be so; his lies shall not so effect it.
Joy and
gladness are removed from the
orchard and from the fields of Moab. I have stopped the flow of wine from the presses; no one treads them with shouts of joy; their shouts are
not for joy.
If grapegatherers come to thee, would they
not leave some
gleaning grapes? if
thieves by night, they will destroy till they have enough.
If
grape gatherers came to you, would they
not leave some gleanings? Were
thieves to come in the night, would they
not steal only what they wanted?
But I have made
Esau bare, I have uncovered his secret places, and he shall
not be able to hide himself: his seed is
spoiled, and his brethren, and his neighbours, and he is
not.
But I will strip
Esau bare; I will uncover his hiding places, and he will be unable to
conceal himself. His descendants will be destroyed along with his relatives and neighbors, and he will be no more.
For thus saith the LORD; Behold, they whose judgment was
not to drink of the cup have
assuredly drunken; and art thou he that shall altogether go unpunished? thou shalt
not go unpunished, but thou shalt surely drink of it.
For this is what the LORD says: “If those who do not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, can you possibly remain unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for you must drink it too.
How is the city of praise not left, the city of my joy!
How is the city of praise
not forsaken, the town that brings Me joy?
And upon
Elam will I bring the four winds from the four quarters of heaven, and will
scatter them toward all those winds; and there shall be no nation
whither the outcasts of
Elam shall
not come.
I will bring the four winds against
Elam from the four corners of the heavens, and I will
scatter them to all these winds. There will
not be a nation to which
Elam’s exiles will
not go.
Declare ye among the nations, and
publish, and set up a standard;
publish, and
conceal not: say, Babylon is taken,
Bel is confounded, Merodach is broken in pieces; her idols are confounded, her images are broken in pieces.
“
Announce and declare to the nations; lift up a
banner and
proclaim it; hold
nothing back when you say, ‘Babylon is captured;
Bel is put to shame; Marduk is
shattered, her images are disgraced, her idols are broken in pieces.’
They shall ask the way to
Zion with their faces
thitherward, saying, Come, and let us join ourselves to the LORD in a perpetual covenant that shall
not be forgotten.
They will ask the way to
Zion and turn their faces toward it. They will come and join themselves to the LORD in an
everlasting covenant that will never be forgotten.
All who found them
devoured them, and their enemies said, ‘We are
not guilty, for they have
sinned against the LORD, their true pasture, the LORD, the hope of their fathers.’
