Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Moab, and for four, I will
not turn away the punishment thereof; because he burned the bones of the king of
Edom into lime:
This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Moab, even four, I will
not revoke My judgment, because he burned to lime the bones of
Edom’s king.
Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will
not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have
despised the law of the LORD, and have
not kept his commandments, and their lies caused them to
err, after the which their fathers have walked:
This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Judah, even four, I will
not revoke My judgment, because they
reject the Law of the LORD and fail to keep His statutes; they are led
astray by the lies in which their fathers walked.
Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will
not turn away the punishment thereof; because they sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of
shoes;
This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Israel, even four, I will
not revoke My judgment, because they sell the righteous for silver and the
needy for a pair of
sandals.
And I raised up of your sons for prophets, and of your young men for
Nazarites. Is it
not even thus, O ye children of Israel? saith the LORD.
I raised up prophets from your sons and Nazirites from your young men. Is this not true, O children of Israel?” declares the LORD.
But ye gave the
Nazarites wine to drink; and commanded the prophets, saying,
Prophesy not.
“But you made the Nazirites drink wine and commanded the prophets
not to
prophesy.
Therefore the flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall
not strengthen his force, neither shall the mighty deliver himself:
Escape will fail the swift, the strong will not prevail by his strength, and the mighty will not save his life.
Neither shall he stand that handleth the bow; and he that is swift of foot shall not deliver himself: neither shall he that rideth the horse deliver himself.
The archer will
not stand his ground, the fleet of foot will
not escape, and the
horseman will
not save his life.
Will a lion
roar in the forest, when he hath no prey? will a young lion cry out of his den, if he have taken
nothing?
Does a lion
roar in the forest when he has no prey? Does a young lion
growl in his den if he has caught
nothing?
Can a bird fall in a
snare upon the earth, where no
gin is for him? shall one take up a
snare from the earth, and have taken
nothing at all?
Does a bird land in a
snare where no
bait has been set? Does a
trap spring from the ground when it has
nothing to catch?
Shall a
trumpet be
blown in the city, and the people
not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath
not done it?
If a ram’s horn sounds in a city, do the people
not tremble? If
calamity comes to a city, has
not the LORD caused it?
Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.
Surely the Lord GOD does
nothing without
revealing His plan to His servants the prophets.
The lion hath
roared, who will
not fear? the Lord GOD hath spoken, who can but
prophesy?
The lion has
roared— who will
not fear? The Lord GOD has spoken— who will
not prophesy?
For they know
not to do right, saith the LORD, who store up violence and
robbery in their palaces.
“For they know not how to do right,” declares the LORD. “They store up violence and destruction in their citadels.”
And I also have given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and want of bread in all your places: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
“I
beset all your cities with cleanness of teeth and all your towns with lack of bread, yet you did
not return to Me,” declares the LORD.
And also I have
withholden the rain from you, when there were yet three months to the harvest: and I caused it to rain upon one city, and caused it
not to rain upon another city: one piece was rained upon, and the piece
whereupon it rained
not withered.
“I also
withheld the rain from you when the harvest was three months away. I sent rain on one city but
withheld it from another. One field received rain; another without rain
withered.
So two or three cities
wandered unto one city, to drink water; but they were
not satisfied: yet have ye
not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
People
staggered from city to city for water to drink, but they were
not satisfied; yet you did
not return to Me,” declares the LORD.
I have
smitten you with blasting and
mildew: when your gardens and your vineyards and your fig trees and your olive trees increased, the
palmerworm devoured them: yet have ye
not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
“I struck you with
blight and
mildew in your growing gardens and vineyards; the
locust devoured your fig and olive trees, yet you did
not return to Me,” declares the LORD.
I have sent among you the
pestilence after the manner of Egypt: your young men have I slain with the sword, and have taken away your horses; and I have made the
stink of your camps to come up unto your nostrils: yet have ye
not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
“I sent plagues among you like those of Egypt; I killed your young men with the sword, along with your captured horses. I filled your nostrils with the
stench of your camp, yet you did
not return to Me,” declares the LORD.
I have overthrown some of you, as God overthrew
Sodom and
Gomorrah, and ye were as a
firebrand plucked out of the burning: yet have ye
not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
Forasmuch therefore as your
treading is upon the poor, and ye take from him burdens of wheat: ye have built houses of
hewn stone, but ye shall
not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall
not drink wine of them.
Therefore, because you
trample on the poor and exact from him a tax of grain, you will never live in the stone houses you have built; you will never drink the wine from the
lush vineyards you have planted.
Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.
Seek good, not evil, so that you may live. And the LORD, the God of Hosts, will be with you, as you have claimed.
Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and
not light.
Woe to you who long for the Day of the LORD! What will the Day of the LORD be for you? It will be darkness and
not light.
Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?
Will
not the Day of the LORD be darkness and
not light, even
gloom with no brightness in it?
Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts.
Even though you offer Me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will
not accept them; for your peace offerings of
fattened cattle I will have no regard.
Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will
not hear the
melody of thy viols.
Take away from Me the noise of your songs! I will
not listen to the music of your harps.
You drink wine by the bowlful and
anoint yourselves with the finest oils, but you fail to
grieve over the ruin of Joseph.
And a man’s uncle shall take him up, and he that burneth him, to bring out the bones out of the house, and shall say unto him that is by the sides of the house, Is there yet any with thee? and he shall say, No. Then shall he say, Hold thy tongue: for we may not make mention of the name of the LORD.
And when the relative who is to burn the bodies picks them up to remove them from the house, he will call to one inside, “Is
anyone else with you?” “None,” that person will answer. “Silence,” the relative will
retort, “for the name of the LORD must
not be
invoked.”
Ye which
rejoice in a thing of
nought, which say, Have we
not taken to us horns by our own strength?
you who
rejoice in Lo-
debar and say, ‘Did we
not take Karnaim by our own strength?’
The LORD
repented for this: It shall
not be, saith the LORD.
So the LORD relented from this plan. “It will not happen,” He said.
The LORD
repented for this: This also shall
not be, saith the Lord GOD.
So the LORD relented from this plan. “It will not happen either,” said the Lord GOD.
And the LORD said unto me,
Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will
not again pass by them any more:
“
Amos, what do you see?” asked the LORD. “A
plumb line,” I replied. “Behold,” said the Lord, “I am setting a
plumb line among My people Israel; I will no longer
spare them:
Then
Amaziah the priest of
Bethel sent to
Jeroboam king of Israel, saying,
Amos hath
conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is
not able to bear all his words.
Then
Amaziah the priest of
Bethel sent word to
Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “
Amos has
conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land cannot bear all his words,
But
prophesy not again any more at
Bethel: for it is the king’s chapel, and it is the king’s court.
But never
prophesy at
Bethel again, because it is the sanctuary of the king and the temple of the kingdom.”
Then answered
Amos, and said to
Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was an
herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:
“I was
not a prophet,”
Amos replied, “nor was I the son of a prophet; rather, I was a
herdsman and a tender of
sycamore-fig trees.
Now therefore hear thou the word of the LORD: Thou sayest,
Prophesy not against Israel, and drop
not thy word against the house of Isaac.
Now, therefore, hear the word of the LORD. You say: ‘Do
not prophesy against Israel; do
not preach against the house of Isaac.’
And he said,
Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A
basket of summer fruit. Then said the LORD unto me, The end is come upon my people of Israel; I will
not again pass by them any more.
“
Amos, what do you see?” He asked. “A
basket of summer fruit,” I replied. So the LORD said to me, “The end has come for My people Israel; I will no longer
spare them.”
Shall
not the land
tremble for this, and every one
mourn that dwelleth therein? and it shall rise up wholly as a flood; and it shall be cast out and
drowned, as by the flood of Egypt.
Will
not the land
quake for this, and all its dwellers
mourn? All of it will swell like the Nile; it will
surge and then
subside like the Nile in Egypt.
Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land,
not a famine of bread, nor a
thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:
Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord GOD, when I will send a famine on the land—
not a famine of bread or a
thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the LORD.
And they shall
wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and
fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall
not find it.
People will
stagger from sea to sea and
roam from north to east, seeking the word of the LORD, but they will
not find it.
I saw the LORD standing upon the altar: and he said,
Smite the
lintel of the door, that the posts may
shake: and cut them in the head, all of them; and I will
slay the last of them with the sword: he that fleeth of them shall
not flee away, and he that escapeth of them shall
not be delivered.
I saw the Lord standing beside the altar, and He said: “Strike the tops of the pillars so that the thresholds
shake.
Topple them on the heads of all the people, and I will kill the rest with the sword. None of those who
flee will get away; none of the fugitives will escape.
And though they go into captivity before their enemies, thence will I command the sword, and it shall
slay them: and I will set mine eyes upon them for evil, and
not for good.
Though they are driven by their enemies into captivity, there I will command the sword to
slay them. I will fix My eyes upon them for
harm and
not for good.”
Are ye not as children of the Ethiopians unto me, O children of Israel? saith the LORD. Have not I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt? and the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir?
“Are you not like the Cushites to Me, O children of Israel?” declares the LORD. “Did I not bring Israel up from the land of Egypt, the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Arameans from Kir?
Behold, the eyes of the Lord GOD are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; saving that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith the LORD.
Surely the eyes of the Lord GOD are on the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from the face of the earth. Yet I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob,” declares the LORD.
For, lo, I will command, and I will
sift the house of Israel among all nations, like as corn is
sifted in a
sieve, yet shall
not the least grain fall upon the earth.
“For surely I will give the command, and I will
shake the house of Israel among all the nations as grain is
sifted in a
sieve; but
not a
pebble will reach the ground.
All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword, which say, The evil shall not overtake nor prevent us.
All the sinners among My people will die by the sword— all those who say, ‘
Disaster will never draw near or
confront us.’”
If
thieves came to thee, if robbers by night, (how art thou cut off!) would they
not have
stolen till they had enough? if the grapegatherers came to thee, would they
not leave some grapes?
“If
thieves came to you, if robbers by night— oh, how you will be ruined— would they
not steal only what they wanted? If
grape gatherers came to you, would they
not leave some gleanings?
Shall I
not in that day, saith the LORD, even destroy the wise men out of
Edom, and understanding out of the mount of
Esau?
In that day, declares the LORD, will I
not destroy the wise men of
Edom and the men of understanding in the mountains of
Esau?
But thou shouldest
not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither shouldest thou have
rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress.
But you should
not gloat in that day, your brother’s day of misfortune, nor
rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction, nor
boast proudly in the day of their distress.
Thou shouldest
not have entered into the gate of my people in the day of their
calamity;
yea, thou shouldest
not have looked on their
affliction in the day of their
calamity, nor have laid hands on their substance in the day of their
calamity;
For as ye have
drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the heathen drink continually,
yea, they shall drink, and they shall
swallow down, and they shall be as though they had
not been.
For as you
drank on My holy mountain, so all the nations will drink continually. They will drink and
gulp it down; they will be as if they had never existed.
And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of
Esau for
stubble, and they shall
kindle in them, and
devour them; and there shall
not be any remaining of the house of
Esau; for the LORD hath spoken it.
Then the house of Jacob will be a
blazing fire, and the house of Joseph a burning flame; but the house of
Esau will be
stubble— Jacob will set it
ablaze and
consume it. Therefore no
survivor will remain from the house of
Esau.” For the LORD has spoken.
So the
shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish
not.
The captain approached him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call upon your God. Perhaps this God will consider us, so that we may not perish.”
Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could
not: for the sea wrought, and was
tempestuous against them.
Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they could
not, for the sea was
raging against them more and more.
Wherefore they
cried unto the LORD, and said, We
beseech thee, O LORD, we
beseech thee, let us
not perish for this man’s life, and lay
not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee.
So they
cried out to the LORD: “Please, O LORD, do
not let us perish on account of this man’s life! Do
not charge us with innocent blood! For You, O LORD, have done as You pleased.”
And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through
Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast,
herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them
not feed, nor drink water:
Then he issued a
proclamation in
Nineveh: “By the decree of the king and his nobles: Let no man or beast,
herd or flock, taste anything at all. They must
not eat or drink.
Who can tell if God will turn and
repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish
not?
Who knows? God may turn and relent; He may turn from His fierce anger, so that we will not perish.”
And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God
repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it
not.
When God saw their actions—that they had turned from their evil ways—He relented from the
disaster He had threatened to bring upon them.
And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was
not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto
Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a
gracious God, and
merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.
So he prayed to the LORD, saying, “O LORD, is this
not what I said while I was still in my own country? This is why I was so quick to
flee toward
Tarshish. I knew that You are a
gracious and
compassionate God, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion—One who relents from sending
disaster.
Then said the LORD, Thou hast had
pity on the
gourd, for the which thou hast
not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:
But the LORD said, “You cared about the plant, which you neither tended nor made grow. It
sprang up in a night and perished in a night.
And should
not I
spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than
sixscore thousand persons that cannot
discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
So should I
not care about the great city of
Nineveh, which has more than 120,000 people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, and many cattle as well?”
For the
transgression of Jacob is all this, and for the sins of the house of Israel. What is the
transgression of Jacob? is it
not Samaria? and what are the high places of Judah? are they
not Jerusalem?
All this is for the
transgression of Jacob and the sins of the house of Israel. What is the
transgression of Jacob? Is it
not Samaria? And what is the high place of Judah? Is it
not Jerusalem?
Declare ye it
not at
Gath,
weep ye
not at all: in the house of Aphrah roll
thyself in the dust.
Do
not tell it in
Gath; do
not weep at all. Roll in the dust in Beth-leaphrah.
Pass ye away, thou inhabitant of Saphir, having thy shame naked: the inhabitant of Zaanan came
not forth in the
mourning of Beth-ezel; he shall receive of you his standing.
Depart in shameful nakedness, O dwellers of Shaphir. The dwellers of Zaanan will
not come out. Beth-ezel is in
mourning; its support is taken from you.
Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, against this family do I
devise an evil, from which ye shall
not remove your necks; neither shall ye go
haughtily: for this time is evil.
Therefore this is what the LORD says: “I am
planning against this nation a
disaster from which you cannot free your necks. Then you will
not walk so proudly, for it will be a time of
calamity.
“Do
not preach,” they
preach. “Do
not preach these things; disgrace will
not overtake us.”
O thou that art named the house of Jacob, is the spirit of the LORD
straitened? are these his doings? do
not my words do good to him that walketh uprightly?
Should it be said, O house of Jacob, “Is the Spirit of the LORD impatient? Are these the things He does?” Do not My words bring good to him who walks uprightly?
Arise ye, and depart; for this is
not your rest: because it is
polluted, it shall destroy you, even with a
sore destruction.
Arise and depart, for this is
not your place of rest, because its
defilement brings destruction— a
grievous destruction!
And I said, Hear, I pray you, O heads of Jacob, and ye princes of the house of Israel; Is it not for you to know judgment?
Then I said: “Hear now, O leaders of Jacob, you rulers of the house of Israel. Should you not know justice?
Then shall they cry unto the LORD, but he will
not hear them: he will even hide his face from them at that time, as they have
behaved themselves ill in their doings.
Then they will cry out to the LORD, but He will not answer them. At that time He will hide His face from them because of the evil they have done.
Thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that make my people
err, that
bite with their teeth, and cry, Peace; and he that putteth
not into their mouths, they even prepare war against him.
This is what the LORD says: “As for the prophets who lead My people
astray, who
proclaim peace while they
chew with their teeth, but declare war against one who puts
nothing in their mouths:
Therefore night shall be unto you, that ye shall not have a vision; and it shall be dark unto you, that ye shall not divine; and the sun shall go down over the prophets, and the day shall be dark over them.
Therefore night will come over you without visions, and darkness without
divination. The sun will set on these prophets, and the
daylight will turn black over them.
The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for
hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they
lean upon the LORD, and say, Is
not the LORD among us? none evil can come upon us.
Her leaders judge for a
bribe, her priests teach for a price, and her prophets practice
divination for money. Yet they
lean upon the LORD, saying, “Is
not the LORD among us? No
disaster can come upon us.”
And he shall judge among many people, and
rebuke strong nations
afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall
not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
Then He will judge between many peoples and
arbitrate for strong nations far and wide. Then they will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into
pruning hooks. Nation will no longer take up the sword against nation, nor will they train anymore for war.
But they know
not the thoughts of the LORD, neither understand they his counsel: for he shall gather them as the
sheaves into the floor.
But they do
not know the thoughts of the LORD or understand His plan, for He has gathered them like
sheaves to the
threshing floor.
And the
remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many people as a
dew from the LORD, as the showers upon the grass, that tarrieth
not for man, nor waiteth for the sons of men.
Then the
remnant of Jacob will be in the midst of many peoples like
dew from the LORD, like showers on the grass, which do
not wait for man or
linger for mankind.
I will take
vengeance in anger and wrath upon the nations that have
not obeyed Me.”
Thou shalt eat, but not be satisfied; and thy casting down shall be in the midst of thee; and thou shalt take hold, but shalt not deliver; and that which thou deliverest will I give up to the sword.
You will eat but not be satisfied, and your hunger will remain with you. What you acquire, you will not preserve; and what you save, I will give to the sword.
Thou shalt
sow, but thou shalt
not reap; thou shalt
tread the olives, but thou shalt
not anoint thee with oil; and sweet wine, but shalt
not drink wine.
Trust ye
not in a friend, put ye
not confidence in a guide: keep the doors of thy mouth from her that lieth in thy
bosom.
Do
not rely on a friend; do
not trust in a companion. Seal the doors of your mouth from her who lies in your arms.
Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me.
Do
not gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen, I will arise; though I sit in darkness, the LORD will be my light.
Notwithstanding the land shall be
desolate because of them that dwell therein, for the fruit of their doings.
Then the earth will become
desolate because of its inhabitants, as the fruit of their deeds.
Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the
transgression of the
remnant of his
heritage? he retaineth
not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy.
Who is a God like You, who pardons iniquity and passes over the
transgression of the
remnant of His inheritance— who does
not retain His anger
forever, because He delights in loving devotion?
The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will
not at all
acquit the wicked: the LORD hath his way in the
whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
The LORD is slow to anger and great in power; the LORD will by no means leave the guilty unpunished. His path is in the
whirlwind and storm, and clouds are the dust beneath His feet.
What do ye imagine against the LORD? he will make an utter end:
affliction shall
not rise up the second time.
Whatever you plot against the LORD, He will bring to an end.
Affliction will
not rise up a second time.
Where is the dwelling of the lions, and the feeding place of the young lions, where the lion, even the old lion, walked, and the lion’s
whelp, and none made them afraid?
Where is the lions’
lair or the feeding ground of the young lions, where the lion and
lioness prowled with their cubs, with
nothing to
frighten them away?
Woe to the
bloody city! it is all full of lies and
robbery; the prey departeth
not;
Woe to the city of blood, full of lies, full of
plunder, never without prey.
Thy crowned are as the locusts, and thy captains as the great grasshoppers, which camp in the hedges in the cold day, but when the sun ariseth they
flee away, and their place is
not known where they are.
Your guards are like the
swarming locust, and your
scribes like clouds of locusts that settle on the walls on a cold day. When the sun rises, they fly away, and no one knows where.
There is no
healing of thy
bruise; thy wound is
grievous: all that hear the
bruit of thee shall
clap the hands over thee: for upon whom hath
not thy wickedness passed continually?
There is no
healing for your injury; your wound is severe. All who hear the news of you
applaud your
downfall, for who has
not experienced your constant cruelty?
O LORD, how long shall I cry, and thou
wilt not hear! even cry out unto thee of violence, and thou
wilt not save!
How long, O LORD, must I call for help but You do not hear, or cry out to You, “Violence!” but You do not save?
Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvellously: for I will work a work in your days, which ye will not believe, though it be told you.
“Look at the nations and observe— be utterly
astounded! For I am doing a work in your days that you would never believe even if someone told you.
For, lo, I raise up the Chaldeans, that bitter and
hasty nation, which shall march through the breadth of the land, to possess the dwellingplaces that are
not theirs.
For behold, I am raising up the Chaldeans— that
ruthless and
impetuous nation which marches through the breadth of the earth to seize dwellings
not their own.
Art thou
not from
everlasting, O LORD my God, mine Holy One? we shall
not die. O LORD, thou hast ordained them for judgment; and, O mighty God, thou hast established them for correction.
Are You
not from
everlasting, O LORD, my God, my Holy One? We will
not die. O LORD, You have appointed them to
execute judgment; O Rock, You have established them for correction.
Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst
not look on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal
treacherously, and holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he?
Your eyes are too pure to look upon evil, and You cannot
tolerate wrongdoing. So why do You
tolerate the faithless? Why are You silent while the wicked
swallow up those more righteous than themselves?
Shall they therefore empty their net, and
not spare continually to
slay the nations?
Will he, therefore, empty his net and continue to
slay nations without mercy?
For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and
not lie: though it
tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will
not tarry.
For the vision awaits an appointed time; it testifies of the end and does not lie. Though it lingers, wait for it, since it will surely come and will not delay.
Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.
Look at the proud one; his soul is not upright— but the righteous will live by faith—
Shall
not all these take up a parable against him, and a
taunting proverb against him, and say,
Woe to him that increaseth that which is
not his! how long? and to him that ladeth himself with thick clay!
Will
not all of these take up a
taunt against him, speaking with
mockery and
derision: ‘
Woe to him who amasses what is
not his and makes himself rich with many loans! How long will this go on?’
Shall they
not rise up suddenly that shall
bite thee, and
awake that shall
vex thee, and thou shalt be for booties unto them?
Will
not your creditors suddenly arise and those who
disturb you
awaken? Then you will become their prey.
