Therefore now, LORD God of Israel, keep with thy servant David my father that thou
promisedst him, saying, There shall not fail thee a man in my sight to sit on the throne of Israel; so that thy children take
heed to their way, that they walk before me as thou hast walked before me.
Therefore now, O LORD, God of Israel, keep for Your servant, my father David, what You promised when You said: ‘You will never fail to have a man to sit before Me on the throne of Israel, if only your descendants guard their way to walk before Me as you have done.’
And now, O God of Israel, let thy word, I pray thee, be
verified, which thou spakest unto thy servant David my father.
And now, O God of Israel, please
confirm what You
promised to Your servant, my father David.
Blessed be the LORD, that hath given rest unto his people Israel, according to all that he promised: there hath not failed one word of all his good promise, which he promised by the hand of Moses his servant.
“Blessed be the LORD, who has given rest to His people Israel according to all that He promised. Not one word has failed of all the good promises He made through His servant Moses.
Then I will establish the throne of thy kingdom upon Israel for ever, as I promised to David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man upon the throne of Israel.
then I will establish your royal throne over Israel
forever, as I
promised your father David when I said, ‘You will never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.’
Then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have
hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a
proverb and a
byword among all people:
then I will cut off Israel from the land that I have given them, and I will
banish from My presence this temple I have
sanctified for My Name. Then Israel will become an object of
scorn and
ridicule among all peoples.
These were the chief of the officers that were over Solomon’s work, five hundred and fifty, which bare rule over the people that wrought in the work.
They were also the chief officers over Solomon’s projects: 550 supervisors over the people who did the work.
And when the queen of
Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the LORD, she came to
prove him with hard questions.
Now when the queen of
Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the LORD, she came to test him with difficult questions.
Howbeit I believed not the words, until I came, and mine eyes had seen it: and, behold, the half was not told me: thy wisdom and
prosperity exceedeth the fame which I heard.
But I did not believe these things until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not even half was told to me. Your wisdom and prosperity have far exceeded the report I heard.
And they arose out of
Midian, and came to
Paran: and they took men with them out of
Paran, and they came to Egypt, unto Pharaoh king of Egypt; which gave him an house, and appointed him
victuals, and gave him land.
Hadad and his men set out from
Midian and went to
Paran. They took men from
Paran with them and went to Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt, who gave
Hadad a house and land and
provided him with food.
And it came to pass at that time when
Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, that the
prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him in the way; and he had
clad himself with a new garment; and they two were alone in the field:
During that time, the
prophet Ahijah the Shilonite met
Jeroboam on the road as he was going out of Jerusalem. Now
Ahijah had
wrapped himself in a new
cloak, and the two of them were alone in the open field.
Now there dwelt an old
prophet in
Bethel; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in
Bethel: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them they told also to their father.
Now a certain old
prophet was living in
Bethel, and his sons came and told him all the deeds that the man of God had done that day in
Bethel. They also told their father the words that the man had spoken to the king.
Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread.
So the prophet said to the man of God, “Come home with me and eat some bread.”
He said unto him, I am a
prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he
lied unto him.
Then the prophet replied, “I too am a prophet like you, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD, saying, ‘Bring him back with you to your house, so that he may eat bread and drink water.’” The old prophet was lying to him,
And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of the LORD came unto the prophet that brought him back:
While they were sitting at the table, the word of the LORD came to the prophet who had brought him back,
And he
cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD,
Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the LORD, and hast not kept the commandment which the LORD thy God commanded thee,
and the
prophet cried out to the man of God who had come from Judah, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Because you have
defied the word of the LORD and have not kept the commandment that the LORD your God gave you,
And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had
drunk, that he
saddled for him the
ass, to wit, for the
prophet whom he had brought back.
And after the man of God had finished eating and drinking, the old
prophet who had brought him back
saddled the
donkey for him.
And, behold, men passed by, and saw the
carcase cast in the way, and the lion standing by the
carcase: and they came and told it in the city where the old
prophet dwelt.
And there were men passing by who saw the body lying in the road with the lion standing beside it, and they went and reported this in the city where the old prophet lived.
And when the
prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was
disobedient unto the word of the LORD: therefore the LORD hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath
torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake unto him.
When the
prophet who had brought him back from his journey heard this, he said, “It is the man of God who disobeyed the command of the LORD. Therefore the LORD has delivered him to the lion, and it has
mauled him and killed him, according to the word that the LORD had spoken to him.”
And the
prophet took up the
carcase of the man of God, and laid it upon the
ass, and brought it back: and the old
prophet came to the city, to
mourn and to
bury him.
So the old
prophet lifted up the body of the man of God, laid it on the
donkey, and brought it back to his own city to
mourn for him and
bury him.
And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then
bury me in the
sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones:
After he had buried him, the
prophet said to his sons, “When I die, you must
bury me in the tomb where the man of God is buried. Lay my bones beside his bones,
And
Jeroboam said to his wife, Arise, I pray thee, and
disguise thyself, that thou be not known to be the wife of
Jeroboam; and get thee to
Shiloh: behold, there is
Ahijah the
prophet, which told me that I should be king over this people.
But hast done evil above all that were before thee: for thou hast gone and made thee other gods, and
molten images, to
provoke me to anger, and hast cast me behind thy back:
You have done more evil than all who came before you. You have
proceeded to make for
yourself other gods and
molten images to
provoke Me, and you have
flung Me behind your back.
And all Israel shall
mourn for him, and
bury him: for he only of
Jeroboam shall come to the grave, because in him there is found some good thing toward the LORD God of Israel in the house of
Jeroboam.
All Israel will
mourn for him and
bury him. For this is the only one belonging to
Jeroboam who will receive a
proper burial, because only in him has the LORD, the God of Israel, found any good in the house of
Jeroboam.
For the LORD shall
smite Israel, as a reed is
shaken in the water, and he shall root up Israel out of this good land, which he gave to their fathers, and shall
scatter them beyond the river, because they have made their groves,
provoking the LORD to anger.
For the LORD will strike Israel as a reed is
shaken in the water. He will
uproot Israel from this good land that He gave their fathers, and He will
scatter them beyond the Euphrates, because they have made their Asherah poles,
provoking the LORD to anger.
And they buried him; and all Israel
mourned for him, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by the hand of his servant
Ahijah the
prophet.
And they buried him, and all Israel
mourned for him, according to the word that the LORD had spoken through His servant
Ahijah the
prophet.
And Judah did evil in the sight of the LORD, and they
provoked him to jealousy with their sins which they had committed, above all that their fathers had done.
And Judah did evil in the sight of the LORD, and by the sins they committed they
provoked Him to
jealous anger more than all their fathers had done.
And there were also sodomites in the land: and they did according to all the abominations of the nations which the LORD cast out before the children of Israel.
There were even male
shrine prostitutes in the land. They imitated all the abominations of the nations the LORD had driven out before the Israelites.
And he took away the sodomites out of the land, and removed all the idols that his fathers had made.
He banished the male
shrine prostitutes from the land and removed all the idols that his fathers had made.
Then King
Asa summoned all the men of Judah, with no exceptions, and they carried away the stones of
Ramah and the timbers
Baasha had used for building. And with these materials King
Asa built up Geba of Benjamin, as well as
Mizpah.
because of the sins
Jeroboam had committed and had caused Israel to commit, and because he had
provoked the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger.
Forasmuch as I
exalted thee out of the dust, and made thee prince over my people Israel; and thou hast walked in the way of
Jeroboam, and hast made my people Israel to sin, to
provoke me to anger with their sins;
“Even though I lifted you out of the dust and made you ruler over My people Israel, you have walked in the way of
Jeroboam and have caused My people Israel to sin and to
provoke Me to anger by their sins.
And also by the hand of the
prophet Jehu the son of Hanani came the word of the LORD against
Baasha, and against his house, even for all the evil that he did in the sight of the LORD, in
provoking him to anger with the work of his hands, in being like the house of
Jeroboam; and because he killed him.
Moreover, the word of the LORD came through the
prophet Jehu son of Hanani against
Baasha and his house, because of all the evil he had done in the sight of the LORD,
provoking Him to anger with the work of his hands and becoming like the house of
Jeroboam, and also because
Baasha had struck down the house of
Jeroboam.
Thus did Zimri destroy all the house of
Baasha, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake against
Baasha by
Jehu the
prophet,
So Zimri destroyed the entire household of
Baasha, according to the word that the LORD had spoken against
Baasha through
Jehu the
prophet.
For all the sins of
Baasha, and the sins of Elah his son, by which they
sinned, and by which they made Israel to sin, in
provoking the LORD God of Israel to anger with their
vanities.
This happened because of all the sins
Baasha and his son Elah had committed and had caused Israel to commit,
provoking the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger with their worthless idols.
And the people that were
encamped heard say, Zimri hath
conspired, and hath also slain the king: wherefore all Israel made Omri, the captain of the host, king over Israel that day in the camp.
and the people in the camp heard that Zimri had not only
conspired but had also struck down the king. So there in the camp that very day, all Israel
proclaimed Omri, the commander of the army, king over Israel.
But the people that followed Omri prevailed against the people that followed Tibni the son of Ginath: so Tibni died, and Omri reigned.
But the followers of Omri proved stronger than those of Tibni son of Ginath. So Tibni died and Omri became king.
For he walked in all the way of
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and in his sin
wherewith he made Israel to sin, to
provoke the LORD God of Israel to anger with their
vanities.
For he walked in all the ways of
Jeroboam son of Nebat and in his sins, which he caused Israel to commit,
provoking the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger with their worthless idols.
And it came to pass, as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took to wife
Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians, and went and served
Baal, and worshipped him.
And as if it were not enough for him to walk in the sins of
Jeroboam son of Nebat, he even married
Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and he then
proceeded to serve and worship
Baal.
And
Ahab made a
grove; and
Ahab did more to
provoke the LORD God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel that were before him.
Then he set up an Asherah pole. Thus
Ahab did more to
provoke the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger than all the kings of Israel before him.
Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to
sustain thee.
“Get up and go to Zarephath of
Sidon, and stay there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to
provide for you.”
For it was so, when
Jezebel cut off the
prophets of the LORD, that
Obadiah took an hundred
prophets, and
hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)
for when
Jezebel had slaughtered the
prophets of the LORD,
Obadiah had taken a hundred
prophets and hidden them, fifty men per cave,
providing them with food and water.)
Was it not told my lord what I did when
Jezebel slew the
prophets of the LORD, how I
hid an hundred men of the LORD’S
prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?
Was it not reported to my lord what I did when
Jezebel slaughtered the
prophets of the LORD? I
hid a hundred
prophets of the LORD, fifty men per cave, and I
provided them with food and water.
Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount
Carmel, and the
prophets of
Baal four hundred and fifty, and the
prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at
Jezebel’s table.
Now
summon all Israel to meet me on Mount
Carmel, along with the four hundred and fifty
prophets of
Baal and the four hundred
prophets of Asherah who eat at
Jezebel’s table.”
So
Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the
prophets together unto mount
Carmel.
So
Ahab summoned all the Israelites and assembled the
prophets on Mount
Carmel.
Then said
Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a
prophet of the LORD; but
Baal’s
prophets are four hundred and fifty men.
Then
Elijah said to the people, “I am the only remaining
prophet of the LORD, but
Baal has four hundred and fifty
prophets.
Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one
bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other
bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under:
Get two bulls for us. Let the
prophets of
Baal choose one bull for themselves, cut it into pieces, and place it on the wood but not light the fire. And I will prepare the other bull and place it on the wood but not light the fire.
And
Elijah said unto the
prophets of
Baal, Choose you one
bullock for
yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under.
Then
Elijah said to the
prophets of
Baal, “Since you are so numerous, choose for
yourselves one bull and prepare it first. Then call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.”
And it came to pass, when
midday was past, and they
prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.
Midday passed, and they kept on
raving until the time of the evening sacrifice. But there was no
response; no one answered, no one paid attention.
And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that
Elijah the
prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.
At the time of the evening sacrifice,
Elijah the
prophet approached the altar and said, “O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel and that I am Your servant and have done all these things at Your command.
And
Elijah said unto them, Take the
prophets of
Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and
Elijah brought them down to the
brook Kishon, and
slew them there.
Then
Elijah ordered them, “Seize the
prophets of
Baal! Do not let a single one escape.” So they seized them, and
Elijah brought them down to the
Kishon Valley and slaughtered them there.
Now
Ahab told
Jezebel everything that
Elijah had done and how he had killed all the
prophets with the sword.
And he said, I have been very
jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have
forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy
prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
“I have been very
zealous for the LORD, the God of Hosts,” he replied, “but the Israelites have
forsaken Your covenant,
torn down Your altars, and killed Your
prophets with the sword. I am the only one left, and they are seeking my life as well.”
And he said, I have been very
jealous for the LORD God of hosts: because the children of Israel have
forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy
prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
“I have been very
zealous for the LORD, the God of Hosts,” he replied, “but the Israelites have
forsaken Your covenant,
torn down Your altars, and killed Your
prophets with the sword. I am the only one left, and they are seeking my life as well.”
And
Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou
anoint to be king over Israel: and
Elisha the son of Shaphat of
Abel-meholah shalt thou
anoint to be
prophet in thy room.
You are also to
anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel and
Elisha son of Shaphat from
Abel-meholah to succeed you as
prophet.
And, behold, there came a
prophet unto
Ahab king of Israel, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou seen all this great multitude? behold, I will deliver it into thine hand this day; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD.
Meanwhile a
prophet approached
Ahab king of Israel and declared, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Do you see this entire great army? Behold, I will deliver it into your hand this very day, and you will know that I am the LORD.’”
And
Ahab said, By whom? And he said, Thus saith the LORD, Even by the young men of the princes of the
provinces. Then he said, Who shall order the battle? And he answered, Thou.
“By whom?”
Ahab asked. And the
prophet replied, “This is what the LORD says: ‘By the young officers of the district governors.’” “Who will start the battle?” asked
Ahab. “You will,” answered the
prophet.
Then he numbered the young men of the princes of the provinces, and they were two hundred and thirty two: and after them he numbered all the people, even all the children of Israel, being seven thousand.
So
Ahab assembled the young officers of the district governors, and there were 232 men. And after them, he assembled the rest of the
Israelite troops, 7,000 in all.
And the young men of the princes of the
provinces went out first; and Ben-
hadad sent out, and they told him, saying, There are men come out of Samaria.
And the young officers of the district governors marched out first. Now Ben-
hadad had sent out scouts, who reported to him, “Men are marching out of Samaria.”
So these young men of the princes of the provinces came out of the city, and the army which followed them.
Meanwhile, these young officers of the district governors marched out of the city, with the army behind them,
And the
prophet came to the king of Israel, and said unto him, Go,
strengthen thyself, and mark, and see what thou doest: for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against thee.
Afterward, the
prophet approached the king of Israel and said, “Go and
strengthen your position, and take note what you must do, for in the spring the king of
Aram will come up against you.”
And a certain man of the sons of the
prophets said unto his neighbour in the word of the LORD,
Smite me, I pray thee. And the man refused to
smite him.
Meanwhile, by the word of the LORD, one of the sons of the prophets said to his companion, “Strike me, please!” But the man refused to strike him.
Then said he unto him, Because thou hast not obeyed the voice of the LORD, behold, as soon as thou art departed from me, a lion shall
slay thee. And as soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and
slew him.
Then the prophet said to him, “Because you have not obeyed the voice of the LORD, as soon as you depart from me a lion will kill you.” And when he left, a lion found him and killed him.
Then he found another man, and said,
Smite me, I pray thee. And the man
smote him, so that in
smiting he wounded him.
Then the prophet found another man and said, “Strike me, please!” So the man struck him and wounded him,
So the
prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and
disguised himself with ashes upon his face.
and the
prophet went and waited on the road for the king,
disguising himself with a
bandage over his eyes.
And as thy servant was
busy here and there, he was gone. And the king of Israel said unto him, So shall thy judgment be;
thyself hast decided it.
But while your servant was
busy here and there, the man disappeared.” And the king of Israel said to him, “So shall your judgment be; you have
pronounced it on
yourself.”
And he hasted, and took the ashes away from his face; and the king of Israel
discerned him that he was of the
prophets.
Then the
prophet quickly removed the
bandage from his eyes, and the king of Israel recognized him as one of the
prophets.
And he said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Because thou hast let go out of thy hand a man whom I appointed to utter destruction, therefore thy life shall go for his life, and thy people for his people.
And the prophet said to the king, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Because you have let slip from your hand the man I had devoted to destruction, your life will be exchanged for his life, and your people for his people.’”
And she wrote in the letters, saying,
Proclaim a fast, and set
Naboth on high among the people:
In the letters she wrote: “
Proclaim a fast and give
Naboth a seat of honor among the people.
They
proclaimed a fast, and set
Naboth on high among the people.
They
proclaimed a fast and gave
Naboth a seat of honor among the people.
I will make your house like that of
Jeroboam son of Nebat and like that of
Baasha son of
Ahijah, because you have
provoked My anger and caused Israel to sin.’
Then the king of Israel gathered the
prophets together, about four hundred men, and said unto them, Shall I go against
Ramoth-
gilead to battle, or shall I
forbear? And they said, Go up; for the Lord shall deliver it into the hand of the king.
So the king of Israel assembled the
prophets, about four hundred men, and asked them, “Should I go to war against
Ramoth-
gilead, or should I
refrain?” “Go up,” they replied, “and the Lord will deliver it into the hand of the king.”
And
Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a
prophet of the LORD besides, that we might
enquire of him?
But
Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there not still a
prophet of the LORD here of whom we can inquire?”
And the king of Israel said unto
Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, Micaiah the son of Imlah, by whom we may
enquire of the LORD: but I
hate him; for he
doth not
prophesy good concerning me, but evil. And
Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.
The king of Israel answered, “There is still one man who can ask the LORD, but I
hate him because he never
prophesies anything good for me, but only bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.” “The king should not say that!”
Jehoshaphat replied.
And the king of Israel and
Jehoshaphat the king of Judah sat each on his throne, having put on their robes, in a void place in the entrance of the gate of Samaria; and all the
prophets prophesied before them.
Dressed in royal
attire, the king of Israel and
Jehoshaphat king of Judah were sitting on their thrones at the
threshing floor by the entrance of the gate of Samaria, with all the
prophets prophesying before them.
And the
messenger that was gone to call Micaiah spake unto him, saying, Behold now, the words of the
prophets declare good unto the king with one mouth: let thy word, I pray thee, be like the word of one of them, and speak that which is good.
Then the
messenger who had gone to call Micaiah
instructed him, “Behold now, with one
accord the words of the
prophets are favorable to the king. So please let your words be like theirs, and speak
favorably.”
So he came to the king. And the king said unto him, Micaiah, shall we go against
Ramoth-
gilead to battle, or shall we
forbear? And he answered him, Go, and
prosper: for the LORD shall deliver it into the hand of the king.
When Micaiah arrived, the king asked him, “Micaiah, should we go to war against
Ramoth-
gilead, or should we
refrain?” “Go up and triumph,” Micaiah replied, “for the LORD will give it into the hand of the king.”
And the king of Israel said unto
Jehoshaphat, Did I not tell thee that he would
prophesy no good concerning me, but evil?
Then the king of Israel said to
Jehoshaphat, “Did I not tell you that he never
prophesies good for me, but only bad?”
And the LORD said unto him,
Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his
prophets. And he said, Thou shalt
persuade him, and prevail also: go forth, and do so.
And he replied, ‘I will go out and be a lying spirit in the mouths of all his
prophets.’ ‘You will surely
entice him and prevail,’ said the LORD. ‘Go and do it.’
Now therefore, behold, the LORD hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets, and the LORD hath spoken evil concerning thee.
So you see, the LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouths of all these
prophets of yours, and the LORD has
pronounced disaster against you.”
And the battle increased that day: and the king was stayed up in his
chariot against the Syrians, and died at even: and the blood ran out of the wound into the midst of the
chariot.
The battle
raged throughout that day, and the king was
propped up in his
chariot facing the Arameans. And the blood from his wound ran out
onto the floor of the
chariot, and that evening he died.
And there went a
proclamation throughout the host about the going down of the sun, saying, Every man to his city, and every man to his own country.
As the sun was setting, the cry
rang out in the army: “Every man to his own city, and every man to his own land!”
And one washed the
chariot in the
pool of Samaria; and the dogs
licked up his blood; and they washed his armour; according unto the word of the LORD which he spake.
And the
chariot was washed at the
pool of Samaria where the
prostitutes bathed, and the dogs
licked up
Ahab’s blood, according to the word that the LORD had spoken.
And the
remnant of the sodomites, which remained in the days of his father
Asa, he took out of the land.
He banished from the land the male
shrine prostitutes who remained from the days of his father
Asa.
For he served
Baal, and worshipped him, and
provoked to anger the LORD God of Israel, according to all that his father had done.
Ahaziah served and worshiped
Baal,
provoking the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger, just as his father had done.
And the sons of the
prophets that were at
Bethel came forth to
Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he said,
Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace.
Then the sons of the
prophets at
Bethel came out to
Elisha and said, “Do you know that the LORD will take your master away from you
today?” “
Yes, I know,” he replied. “Do not speak of it.”
And the sons of the
prophets that were at
Jericho came to
Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he answered,
Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace.
Then the sons of the
prophets at
Jericho came up to
Elisha and said, “Do you know that the LORD will take your master away from you
today?” “
Yes, I know,” he replied. “Do not speak of it.”
And fifty men of the sons of the
prophets went, and stood to view
afar off: and they two stood by Jordan.
Then a company of fifty of the sons of the
prophets went and stood at a distance, facing
Elijah and
Elisha as the two of them stood by the Jordan.
And when the sons of the
prophets which were to view at
Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of
Elijah doth rest on
Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.
When the sons of the
prophets who were facing him from
Jericho saw what had happened, they said, “The spirit of
Elijah rests on
Elisha.” And they went to meet him and bowed down to the ground before him.
But
Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a
prophet of the LORD, that we may
enquire of the LORD by him? And one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said, Here is
Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of
Elijah.
But
Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no
prophet of the LORD here? Let us inquire of the LORD through him.” And one of the servants of the king of Israel answered, “
Elisha son of Shaphat is here. He used to pour water on the hands of
Elijah.”
And
Elisha said unto the king of Israel, What have I to do with thee? get thee to the
prophets of thy father, and to the
prophets of thy mother. And the king of Israel said unto him,
Nay: for the LORD hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab.
Elisha, however, said to the king of Israel, “What have we to do with each other? Go to the
prophets of your father and of your mother!” “No,” replied the king of Israel, “for it is the LORD who has summoned these three kings to deliver them into the hand of Moab.”
Now there
cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the
prophets unto
Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the LORD: and the
creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be
bondmen.
Now the wife of one of the sons of the
prophets cried out to
Elisha, “Your servant, my husband, is dead, and you know that your servant feared the LORD. And now his
creditor is coming to take my two children as his slaves!”
And it fell on a day, that
Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she
constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as
oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread.
One day
Elisha went to Shunem, and a
prominent woman who lived there persuaded him to have a meal. So whenever he would pass by, he would stop there to eat.
And
Elisha came again to
Gilgal: and there was a
dearth in the land; and the sons of the
prophets were sitting before him: and he said unto his servant, Set on the great pot, and
seethe pottage for the sons of the
prophets.
When
Elisha returned to
Gilgal, there was a famine in the land. As the sons of the
prophets were sitting at his feet, he said to his
attendant, “Put on the large pot and
boil some
stew for the sons of the
prophets.”
And she said unto her
mistress, Would God my lord were with the
prophet that is in Samaria! for he would recover him of his
leprosy.
She said to her
mistress, “If only my master would go to the
prophet who is in Samaria, he would cure him of his
leprosy.”
And it was so, when
Elisha the man of God had heard that the king of Israel had rent his clothes, that he sent to the king, saying, Wherefore hast thou rent thy clothes? let him come now to me, and he shall know that there is a
prophet in Israel.
Now when
Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had
torn his clothes, he sent a message to the king: “Why have you
torn your clothes? Please let the man come to me, and he will know that there is a
prophet in Israel.”
And his servants came near, and spake unto him, and said, My father, if the
prophet had
bid thee do some great thing, wouldest thou not have done it? how much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, and be clean?
Naaman’s servants, however, approached him and said, “My father, if the
prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, ‘Wash and be
cleansed’?”
And he said, All is well. My master hath sent me, saying, Behold, even now there be come to me from mount Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets: give them, I pray thee, a talent of silver, and two changes of garments.
“Everything is all right,” Gehazi replied. “My master has sent me to say, ‘I have just now discovered that two young men from the sons of the prophets have come to me from the hill country of Ephraim. Please give them a talent of silver and two sets of clothing.’”
