And he said, I saw all Israel scattered upon the hills, as sheep that have not a
shepherd: and the LORD said, These have no master: let them
return every man to his house in peace.
So Micaiah declared: “I saw all Israel scattered on the hills like sheep without a
shepherd. And the LORD said, ‘These people have no master; let each one
return home in peace.’”
And the king of Israel said, Take Micaiah, and carry him back unto Amon the governor of the city, and to
Joash the king’s son;
And the king of Israel declared, “Take Micaiah and
return him to Amon the governor of the city and to
Joash the king’s son,
And say, Thus saith the king, Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him with bread of
affliction and with water of
affliction, until I come in peace.
and tell them that this is what the king says: ‘Put this man in prison and feed him only bread and water until I return safely.’”
And Micaiah said, If thou
return at all in peace, the LORD hath not spoken by me. And he said,
Hearken, O people, every one of you.
But Micaiah replied, “If you ever
return safely, the LORD has not spoken through me.” Then he added, “Take
heed, all you people!”
And when the messengers turned back unto him, he said unto them, Why are ye now turned back?

tarried at

returned to

Carmel, and from there he
returned to Samaria.
Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his
stead, and offered him for a burnt offering upon the wall. And there was great
indignation against Israel: and they departed from him, and
returned to their own land.

firstborn son, who was to succeed him, and offered him as a burnt offering on the city wall. And there was great
fury against the Israelites, so they withdrew and
returned to their own land.

donkeys, that I may go quickly to the man of God and
return.”
Then he
returned, and walked in the house to and
fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child

And
Elisha came again to
Gilgal: and there was a
dearth in the land; and the sons of the prophets were sitting before him: and he said unto his servant, Set on the great pot, and
seethe pottage for the sons of the prophets.

Elisha returned to
Gilgal, there was a famine in the land. As the sons of the prophets were sitting at his feet, he said to his
attendant, “Put on the large pot and
boil some
stew for the sons of the prophets.”

smite them: wouldest thou
smite those whom thou hast taken
captive with thy sword and with thy bow? set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their master.
“Do not kill them,” he replied. “Would you kill those you have captured with your own sword or bow? Set food and water before them, that they may eat and drink and then return to their master.”
And he prepared great provision for them: and when they had eaten and
drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their master. So the bands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel.

uttermost part of the camp, they went into one tent, and did eat and drink, and carried thence silver, and gold, and
raiment, and went and
hid it; and came again, and entered into another tent, and carried thence also, and went and
hid it.
When the lepers reached the edge of the camp, they went into a tent to eat and drink. Then they carried off the silver, gold, and clothing, and went and
hid them. On
returning, they entered another tent, carried off some items from there, and
hid them.
And they went after them unto Jordan: and, lo, all the way was full of garments and vessels, which the Syrians had cast away in their
haste. And the messengers
returned, and told the king.
And they
tracked them as far as the Jordan, and indeed, the whole way was
littered with the clothing and
equipment the Arameans had thrown off in
haste. So the scouts
returned and told the king.

And king
Joram went back to be
healed in
Jezreel of the wounds which the Syrians had given him at
Ramah, when he fought against
Hazael king of Syria. And
Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see
Joram the son of
Ahab in
Jezreel, because he was sick.
So King
Joram returned to
Jezreel to recover from the wounds that the Arameans had inflicted on him at
Ramah when he fought against
Hazael king of
Aram. Then
Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to
Jezreel to visit
Joram son of
Ahab, because
Joram had been wounded.
But king
Joram was
returned to be
healed in
Jezreel of the wounds which the Syrians had given him, when he fought with
Hazael king of Syria.) And
Jehu said, If it be your minds, then let none go forth nor escape out of the city to go to tell it in
Jezreel.
but King
Joram had
returned to
Jezreel to recover from the wounds he had suffered at the hands of the Arameans in the battle against
Hazael their king.) So
Jehu said, “If you commanders wish to make me king, then do not let
anyone escape from the city to go and tell it in
Jezreel.”
And he took all the gold and silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of the LORD, and in the treasures of the king’s house, and hostages, and returned to Samaria.
He took all the gold and silver and all the articles found in the house of the LORD and in the
treasuries of the royal palace, as well as some hostages. Then he
returned to Samaria.
And Urijah the priest built an altar according to all that king
Ahaz had sent from Damascus: so Urijah the priest made it against king
Ahaz came from Damascus.

Ahaz had sent from Damascus, and he completed it by the time King
Ahaz had
returned.
And
Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to
Lachish, saying, I have
offended;
return from me: that which thou puttest on me will I bear. And the king of Assyria appointed unto
Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.
So
Hezekiah king of Judah sent word to the king of Assyria at
Lachish, saying, “I have done wrong; withdraw from me, and I will pay whatever you demand from me.” And the king of Assyria exacted from
Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.
Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumour, and shall return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.
Behold, I will put a spirit in him so that he will hear a
rumor and
return to his own land, where I will cause him to fall by the sword.’”
So
Rab-shakeh
returned, and found the king of Assyria
warring against
Libnah: for he had heard that he was departed from
Lachish.
When the
Rabshakeh heard that the king of Assyria had left
Lachish, he withdrew and found the king fighting against
Libnah.

lengthen ten steps,” answered
Hezekiah, “but not for it to go back ten steps.”
And he
slew all the priests of the high places that were there upon the altars, and burned men’s bones upon them, and
returned to Jerusalem.
On the altars he slaughtered all the priests of the high places, and he burned human bones on them. Then he returned to Jerusalem.
They arose, all the
valiant men, and took away the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to
Jabesh, and buried their bones under the oak in
Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
all their men of
valor set out and
retrieved the bodies of Saul and his sons and brought them to
Jabesh. And they buried their bones under the oak in
Jabesh and fasted seven days.
And all the people departed every man to his house: and David
returned to
bless his house.
Then all the people departed for their homes, and David
returned home to
bless his household.
Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly
ashamed. And the king said,
Tarry at
Jericho until your beards be grown, and then
return.
When someone came and told David about his men, he sent messengers to meet them, since the men had been thoroughly
humiliated. The king told them, “Stay in
Jericho until your beards have grown back, and then
return.”
And he brought out the people that were in it, and cut them with saws, and with harrows of iron, and with axes. Even so dealt David with all the cities of the children of
Ammon. And David and all the people
returned to Jerusalem.
David brought out the people who were there and put them to work with saws, iron picks, and axes. And he did the same to all the
Ammonite cities. Then David and all his troops
returned to Jerusalem.
Nevertheless the king’s word prevailed against
Joab. Wherefore
Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.
Nevertheless, the king’s word prevailed against
Joab. So
Joab departed and traveled throughout Israel, and then he
returned to Jerusalem.
And if thy people Israel be put to the worse before the enemy, because they have
sinned against thee; and shall
return and
confess thy name, and pray and make
supplication before thee in this house;
When Your people Israel are defeated before an enemy because they have
sinned against You, and they
return to You and
confess Your name, praying and
pleading before You in this temple,
If they
return to thee with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their captivity,
whither they have carried them
captives, and pray toward their land, which thou gavest unto their fathers, and toward the city which thou hast chosen, and toward the house which I have built for thy name:
and when they
return to You with all their heart and soul in the land of the enemies who took them
captive, and when they pray in the direction of the land that You gave to their fathers, the city You have chosen, and the house I have built for Your Name,
And king Solomon gave to the queen of
Sheba all her desire,
whatsoever she asked, beside that which she had brought unto the king. So she turned, and went away to her own land, she and her servants.
King Solomon gave the queen of
Sheba all she desired—whatever she asked—far more than she had brought the king. Then she left and
returned to her own country, along with her servants.
And it came to pass, when
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was in Egypt,
whither he had fled from the presence of Solomon the king, heard it, that
Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.
When
Jeroboam son of Nebat heard about this, he
returned from Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon.
And king
Rehoboam took counsel with the old men that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye me to
return answer to this people?
Then King
Rehoboam consulted with the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How do you
advise me to
respond to these people?” he asked.
And he said unto them, What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people, which have spoken to me, saying, Ease somewhat the yoke that thy father did put upon us?
He asked them, “What message do you
advise that we send back to these people who have spoken to me, saying, ‘
Lighten the yoke your father put on us’?”
So
Jeroboam and all the people came to
Rehoboam on the third day, as the king
bade, saying, Come again to me on the third day.
After three days,
Jeroboam and all the people
returned to
Rehoboam, since the king had said, “Come back to me on the third day.”
Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren:
return every man to his house: for this thing is done of me. And they obeyed the words of the LORD, and
returned from going against
Jeroboam.
that this is what the LORD says: ‘You are not to go up and fight against your brothers. Each of you must
return home, for this word is from Me.’” So they
listened to the words of the LORD and turned back from going against
Jeroboam.
And when the king entered into the house of the LORD, the guard came and
fetched them, and brought them again into the guard chamber.
And whenever the king entered the house of the LORD, the guards would go with him, bearing the shields, and later they would
return them to the
guardroom.
They
smote also the tents of cattle, and carried away sheep and camels in abundance, and
returned to Jerusalem.
They also attacked the tents of the herdsmen and carried off many sheep and camels. Then they returned to Jerusalem.
Then he said, I did see all Israel scattered upon the mountains, as sheep that have no
shepherd: and the LORD said, These have no master; let them
return therefore every man to his house in peace.
So Micaiah declared: “I saw all Israel scattered on the hills like sheep without a
shepherd. And the LORD said, ‘These people have no master; let each one
return home in peace.’”
Then the king of Israel said, Take ye Micaiah, and carry him back to Amon the governor of the city, and to
Joash the king’s son;
And the king of Israel declared, “Take Micaiah and
return him to Amon the governor of the city and to
Joash the king’s son,
And say, Thus saith the king, Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him with bread of
affliction and with water of
affliction, until I
return in peace.
and tell them that this is what the king says: ‘Put this man in prison and feed him only bread and water until I return safely.’”
And Micaiah said, If thou certainly
return in peace, then hath not the LORD spoken by me. And he said,
Hearken, all ye people.
But Micaiah replied, “If you ever
return safely, the LORD has not spoken through me.” Then he added, “Take
heed, all you people!”
And
Jehoshaphat the king of Judah
returned to his house in peace to Jerusalem.
When
Jehoshaphat king of Judah had
returned safely to his home in Jerusalem,
Moreover in Jerusalem did
Jehoshaphat set of the Levites, and of the priests, and of the chief of the fathers of Israel, for the judgment of the LORD, and for
controversies, when they
returned to Jerusalem.
Moreover,
Jehoshaphat appointed in Jerusalem some of the Levites, priests, and heads of the
Israelite families to judge on behalf of the LORD and to settle disputes. And they lived in Jerusalem.
Then they
returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and
Jehoshaphat in the
forefront of them, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for the LORD had made them to
rejoice over their enemies.
Then all the men of Judah and Jerusalem, with
Jehoshaphat at their head,
returned joyfully to Jerusalem, for the LORD had made them
rejoice over their enemies.
And he
returned to be
healed in
Jezreel because of the wounds which were given him at
Ramah, when he fought with
Hazael king of Syria. And
Azariah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Jehoram the son of
Ahab at
Jezreel, because he was sick.
so he
returned to
Jezreel to recover from the wounds they had inflicted on him at
Ramah when he fought against
Hazael king of
Aram. Then
Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to
Jezreel to visit
Joram son of
Ahab, because
Joram had been wounded.
Then
Amaziah separated them, to wit, the army that was come to him out of Ephraim, to go home again: wherefore their anger was greatly
kindled against Judah, and they
returned home in great anger.
So
Amaziah dismissed the troops who had come to him from Ephraim and sent them home. And they were
furious with Judah and
returned home in great anger.
Now it came to pass, after that
Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of
Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down himself before them, and burned incense unto them.
When
Amaziah returned from the slaughter of the Edomites, he brought back the gods of the Seirites, set them up as his own gods, bowed before them, and burned sacrifices to them.
And he took all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of God with Obed-
edom, and the treasures of the king’s house, the hostages also, and
returned to Samaria.
He took all the gold and silver and all the articles found in the house of God with Obed-
edom and in the
treasuries of the royal palace, as well as some hostages. Then he
returned to Samaria.
But a prophet of the LORD was there, whose name was
Oded: and he went out before the host that came to Samaria, and said unto them, Behold, because the LORD God of your fathers was
wroth with Judah, he hath delivered them into your hand, and ye have slain them in a
rage that reacheth up unto heaven.
But a prophet of the LORD named
Oded was there, and he went out to meet the army that
returned to Samaria. “Look,” he said to them, “because of His wrath against Judah, the LORD, the God of your fathers, has delivered them into your hand. But you have slaughtered them in a
rage that reaches up to heaven.
Now hear me therefore, and deliver the
captives again, which ye have taken
captive of your brethren: for the fierce wrath of the LORD is upon you.
Now therefore,
listen to me and
return the
captives you took from your
kinsmen, for the fierce anger of the LORD is upon you.”
And the men which were expressed by name rose up, and took the
captives, and with the
spoil clothed all that were naked among them, and
arrayed them, and
shod them, and gave them to eat and to drink, and
anointed them, and carried all the feeble of them upon
asses, and brought them to
Jericho, the city of palm trees, to their brethren: then they
returned to Samaria.
Then the men who were designated by name arose, took charge of the
captives, and provided from the
plunder clothing for the naked. They clothed them, gave them
sandals and food and drink,
anointed their wounds, and put all the feeble on
donkeys. So they brought them to
Jericho, the City of Palms, to their brothers. Then they
returned to Samaria.
So the posts went with the letters from the king and his princes throughout all Israel and Judah, and according to the commandment of the king, saying, Ye children of Israel, turn again unto the LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, and he will
return to the
remnant of you, that are escaped out of the hand of the kings of Assyria.
So the couriers went throughout Israel and Judah with letters from the king and his officials, which read: “Children of Israel,
return to the LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, so that He may
return to those of you who remain, who have escaped the
grasp of the kings of Assyria.
For if ye turn again unto the LORD, your brethren and your children shall find
compassion before them that lead them
captive, so that they shall come again into this land: for the LORD your God is
gracious and
merciful, and will not turn away his face from you, if ye
return unto him.
For if you
return to the LORD, your brothers and sons will receive mercy in the presence of their captors and will
return to this land. For the LORD your God is
gracious and
merciful; He will not turn His face away from you if you
return to Him.”
Now when all this was finished, all Israel that were present went out to the cities of Judah, and
brake the images in pieces, and cut down the groves, and threw down the high places and the altars out of all Judah and Benjamin, in Ephraim also and
Manasseh, until they had utterly destroyed them all. Then all the children of Israel
returned, every man to his possession, into their own cities.
When all this had ended, the Israelites in attendance went out to the cities of Judah and broke up the sacred pillars,
chopped down the Asherah poles, and
tore down the high places and altars throughout Judah and Benjamin, as well as in Ephraim and
Manasseh, until they had utterly destroyed them all. Then all the Israelites
returned to their cities, each to his own property.
And the LORD sent an angel, which cut off all the mighty men of valour, and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he
returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth of his own
bowels slew him there with the sword.
and the LORD sent an angel who
annihilated every mighty man of
valor and every leader and commander in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he withdrew to his own land in disgrace. And when he entered the temple of his god, some of his own sons struck him down with the sword.
And when he had broken down the altars and the groves, and had beaten the
graven images into powder, and cut down all the idols throughout all the land of Israel, he
returned to Jerusalem.
He
tore down the altars and Asherah poles,
crushed the idols to powder, and cut to pieces all the incense altars throughout the land of Israel. Then he
returned to Jerusalem.
And when they came to Hilkiah the high priest, they delivered the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered of the hand of
Manasseh and Ephraim, and of all the
remnant of Israel, and of all Judah and Benjamin; and they
returned to Jerusalem.
So they went to Hilkiah the high priest and gave him the money that had been brought into the house of God, which the Levites at the doors had collected from the people of
Manasseh and Ephraim, from all the
remnant of Israel, Judah, and Benjamin, and from the people of Jerusalem.
Now these are the children of the province that went up out of the captivity, of those which had been carried away, whom
Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away unto Babylon, and came again unto Jerusalem and Judah, every one unto his city;
Now these are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles carried away to Babylon by
Nebuchadnezzar its king. They
returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town,
Now in the second year of their coming unto the house of God at Jerusalem, in the second month, began
Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and the
remnant of their brethren the priests and the Levites, and all they that were come out of the captivity unto Jerusalem; and appointed the Levites, from twenty years old and upward, to set forward the work of the house of the LORD.
In the second month of the second year after they had arrived at the house of God in Jerusalem,
Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Jeshua son of Jozadak, and the rest of their associates including the priests, the Levites, and all who had
returned to Jerusalem from the captivity, began the work. They appointed Levites twenty years of age or older to
supervise the construction of the house of the LORD.
Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the
rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations.
Let it be known to the king that the Jews who came from you to us have
returned to Jerusalem. And they are rebuilding that
rebellious and wicked city, restoring its walls, and repairing its foundations.
But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, that they could not cause them to cease, till the matter came to
Darius: and then they
returned answer by letter concerning this matter.
But the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews, so that they were not stopped until a report was sent to
Darius and written instructions about this matter were
returned.
And thus they returned us answer, saying, We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and build the house that was builded these many years ago, which a great king of Israel builded and set up.
And this is the answer they returned: “We are servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we are rebuilding the temple that was built many years ago, which a great king of Israel built and completed.
And also let the golden and silver vessels of the house of God, which
Nebuchadnezzar took forth out of the temple which is at Jerusalem, and brought unto Babylon, be restored, and brought again unto the temple which is at Jerusalem, every one to his place, and place them in the house of God.
Furthermore, the gold and silver articles of the house of God, which
Nebuchadnezzar took from the temple in Jerusalem and carried to Babylon, must also be
returned to the temple in Jerusalem and deposited in the house of God.
And the children of Israel, which were come again out of captivity, and all such as had separated themselves unto them from the
filthiness of the heathen of the land, to seek the LORD God of Israel, did eat,
The Israelites who had
returned from exile
ate it, together with all who had separated themselves from the uncleanness of the peoples of the land to seek the LORD, the God of Israel.
And hath extended mercy unto me before the king, and his counsellors, and before all the king’s mighty princes. And I was strengthened as the hand of the LORD my God was upon me, and I gathered together out of Israel chief men to go up with me.
and who has shown me favor before the king, his counselors, and all his powerful officials. And because the hand of the LORD my God was upon me, I took courage and gathered the leaders of Israel to return with me.
These are now the chief of their fathers, and this is the
genealogy of them that went up with me from Babylon, in the reign of
Artaxerxes the king.
These are the family heads and
genealogical records of those who
returned with me from Babylon during the reign of King
Artaxerxes:
Also the children of those that had been carried away, which were come out of the captivity, offered burnt offerings unto the God of Israel, twelve bullocks for all Israel,
ninety and six rams, seventy and seven lambs, twelve he goats for a sin offering: all this was a burnt offering unto the LORD.
Then the exiles who had returned from captivity sacrificed burnt offerings to the God of Israel: 12 bulls for all Israel, 96 rams, 77 lambs, and a sin offering of 12 male goats. All this was a burnt offering to the LORD.
But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the
uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.
but if you
return to Me and keep and practice My commandments, then even if your exiles have been banished to the
farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for My Name.’
And the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when
wilt thou
return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.
Then the king, with the queen seated beside him, asked me, “How long will your journey take, and when will you return?” So it pleased the king to send me, and I set a time.
Then went I up in the night by the
brook, and viewed the wall, and turned back, and entered by the gate of the valley, and so
returned.
so I went up the valley by night and
inspected the wall. Then I headed back and reentered through the Valley Gate.
And it came to pass, that when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times, From all places whence ye shall return unto us they will be upon you.
At that time the Jews who lived nearby came and told us ten times over, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.”
And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to
nought, that we
returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.
When our enemies heard that we were aware of their scheme and that God had
frustrated it, each of us
returned to his own work on the wall.
And my God put into mine heart to gather together the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, that they might be reckoned by
genealogy. And I found a register of the
genealogy of them which came up at the first, and found written therein,
Then my God put it into my heart to
assemble the nobles, the officials, and the people to be
enrolled by
genealogy. I found the
genealogical register of those who had first
returned, and I found the following written in it:
These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom
Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city;
These are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles carried away to Babylon by
Nebuchadnezzar its king. They
returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town,
And all the congregation of them that were come again out of the captivity made booths, and sat under the booths: for since the days of Jeshua the son of
Nun unto that day had not the children of Israel done so. And there was very great
gladness.
The whole assembly who had
returned from exile made booths and lived in them. From the days of Joshua son of
Nun until that day, the Israelites had not celebrated like this. And there was great
rejoicing.
And refused to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou
didst among them; but
hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to
return to their
bondage: but thou art a God ready to
pardon,
gracious and
merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not.
They refused to
listen and failed to remember the wonders You performed among them. They
stiffened their necks and appointed a leader to
return them to their
bondage in Egypt. But You are a
forgiving God,
gracious and
compassionate, slow to anger and rich in loving devotion, and You did not
forsake them.
Nevertheless they were
disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their backs, and
slew thy prophets which
testified against them to turn them to thee, and they wrought great provocations.
But they were
disobedient and rebelled against You; they
flung Your law behind their backs. They killed Your prophets, who had
admonished them to
return to You. They committed terrible blasphemies.
But after they had rest, they did evil again before thee: therefore leftest thou them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them: yet when they
returned, and
cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and many times
didst thou deliver them according to thy
mercies;
But as soon as they had rest, they again did evil in Your sight. So You abandoned them to the hands of their enemies, who had dominion over them. When they
cried out to You again, You heard from heaven, and You delivered them many times in Your
compassion.
But in all this time was not I at Jerusalem: for in the two and
thirtieth year of
Artaxerxes king of Babylon came I unto the king, and after certain days obtained I leave of the king:
While all this was happening, I was not in Jerusalem, because I had
returned to
Artaxerxes king of Babylon in the thirty-second year of his reign. Some time later I obtained leave from the king
And I came to Jerusalem, and understood of the evil that Eliashib did for
Tobiah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.
to
return to Jerusalem. Then I discovered the evil that Eliashib had done on behalf of
Tobiah by providing him a room in the courts of the house of God.
Then I
testified against them, and said unto them, Why
lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the sabbath.
but I
warned them, “Why are you camping in front of the wall? If you do it again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time on, they did not
return on the Sabbath.
In the evening she went, and on the
morrow she
returned into the second house of the women, to the
custody of Shaashgaz, the king’s
chamberlain, which kept the concubines: she came in unto the king no more, except the king delighted in her, and that she were called by name.
She would go there in the evening, and in the morning she would
return to a second
harem under the care of Shaashgaz, the king’s
eunuch in charge of the concubines. She would not
return to the king unless he delighted in her and summoned her by name.
And
Mordecai came again to the king’s gate. But
Haman hasted to his house
mourning, and having his head covered.
Then
Mordecai returned to the king’s gate. But
Haman rushed home, with his head covered in grief.
Then the king
returned out of the palace garden into the place of the
banquet of wine; and
Haman was fallen upon the bed
whereon Esther was. Then said the king, Will he force the queen also before me in the house? As the word went out of the king’s mouth, they covered
Haman’s face.
Just as the king
returned from the palace garden to the
banquet hall,
Haman was falling on the
couch where
Esther was
reclining. The king
exclaimed, “Would he actually
assault the queen while I am in the palace?” As soon as the words had left the king’s mouth, they covered
Haman’s face.
But when
Esther came before the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked
device, which he devised against the Jews, should
return upon his own head, and that he and his sons should be
hanged on the
gallows.
But when it came before the king, he commanded by letter that the wicked scheme which
Haman had devised against the Jews should come back upon his own head, and that he and his sons should be
hanged on the
gallows.
And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s
womb, and naked shall I
return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.
saying: “Naked I came from my mother’s
womb, and naked I will
return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the name of the LORD.”
And the LORD said unto
Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his
integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.
Then the LORD said to
Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one on earth like him, a man who is
blameless and upright, who fears God and shuns evil. He still
retains his
integrity, even though you incited Me against him to ruin him without cause.”
Then Job’s wife said to him, “Do you still
retain your
integrity?
Curse God and die!”
Return, I pray you, let it not be iniquity;
yea,
return again, my righteousness is in it.
Reconsider; do not be unjust. Reconsider, for my righteousness is at
stake.
He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him any more.
He never returns to his house; his place remembers him no more.
Remember, I
beseech thee, that thou hast made me as the clay; and
wilt thou bring me into dust again?
Please remember that You
molded me like clay. Would You now
return me to dust?
Before I go whence I shall not return, even to the land of darkness and the shadow of death;
before I go—never to
return— to a land of darkness and
gloom,
He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.
He despairs of his return from darkness; he is marked for the sword.
