But thou, O LORD, knowest me: thou hast seen me, and tried mine heart toward thee: pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and prepare them for the day of slaughter.
But You know me, O LORD; You
see me and test my heart toward You.
Drag away the wicked like sheep to the slaughter and set them apart for the day of
carnage.
How long shall the land
mourn, and the herbs of every field wither, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein? the beasts are consumed, and the birds; because they said, He shall not
see our last end.
How long will the land
mourn and the grass of every field be
withered? Because of the evil of its residents, the animals and birds have been swept away, for the people have said, “He cannot
see what our end will be.”
Lift up your eyes, and behold them that come from the north: where is the flock that was given thee, thy beautiful flock?
Lift up your eyes and see those coming from the north. Where is the flock entrusted to you, the sheep that were your pride?
Therefore will I discover thy skirts upon thy face, that thy shame may appear.
So I will pull your skirts up over your face, that your shame may be seen.
I have
seen thine
adulteries, and thy neighings, the
lewdness of thy
whoredom, and thine abominations on the hills in the fields.
Woe unto thee, O Jerusalem!
wilt thou not be made clean? when shall it once be?
Then said I,
Ah, Lord GOD! behold, the prophets say unto them, Ye shall not
see the sword, neither shall ye have famine; but I will give you
assured peace in this place.
“
Ah, Lord GOD!” I replied, “Look, the prophets are telling them, ‘You will not
see the sword or suffer famine, but I will give you lasting peace in this place.’”
If I go forth into the field, then behold the slain with the sword! and if I enter into the city, then behold them that are sick with famine!
yea, both the prophet and the priest go about into a land that they know not.
If I go out to the country, I
see those slain by the sword; if I enter the city, I
see those
ravaged by famine! For both prophet and priest travel to a land they do not know.’”
And ye have done worse than your fathers; for, behold, ye walk every one after the imagination of his evil heart, that they may not
hearken unto me:
And you have done more evil than your fathers.
See how each of you follows the
stubbornness of his evil heart instead of obeying Me.
For he shall be like the
heath in the desert, and shall not
see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the
parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited.
He will be like a
shrub in the desert; he will not
see when prosperity comes. He will dwell in the
parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives.
For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not
see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of
drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.
He is like a tree planted by the waters that sends out its roots toward the stream. It does not fear when the heat comes, and its leaves are always green. It does not
worry in a year of
drought, nor does it cease to produce fruit.
And the vessel that he made of clay was
marred in the hand of the
potter: so he made it again another vessel, as
seemed good to the
potter to make it.
But the vessel that he was shaping from the clay became
flawed in his hand; so he formed it into another vessel, as it
seemed best for him to do.
And I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place; and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hands of them that seek their lives: and their carcases will I give to be meat for the fowls of the heaven, and for the beasts of the earth.
And in this place I will ruin the plans of Judah and Jerusalem. I will make them fall by the sword before their enemies, by the hands of those who
seek their lives, and I will give their
carcasses as food to the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth.
And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend in the siege and straitness,
wherewith their enemies, and they that
seek their lives, shall
straiten them.
I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and daughters, and they will eat one another’s flesh in the siege and distress inflicted on them by their enemies who seek their lives.’
But, O LORD of hosts, that triest the righteous, and
seest the
reins and the heart, let me
see thy
vengeance on them: for unto thee have I opened my cause.
O LORD of Hosts, who examines the righteous, who
sees the heart and mind, let me
see Your
vengeance upon them, for to You I have committed my cause.
Wherefore came I forth out of the
womb to
see labour and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?
Why did I come out of the
womb to
see only trouble and sorrow, and to end my days in shame?
And afterward, saith the LORD, I will deliver
Zedekiah king of Judah, and his servants, and the people, and such as are left in this city from the
pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those that
seek their life: and he shall
smite them with the edge of the sword; he shall not
spare them, neither have
pity, nor have mercy.
‘After that,’ declares the LORD, ‘I will hand over
Zedekiah king of Judah, his officers, and the people in this city who
survive the plague and sword and famine, to
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and to their enemies who
seek their lives. He will put them to the sword; he will not
spare them or show
pity or
compassion.’
Weep ye not for the dead, neither
bemoan him: but
weep sore for him that goeth away: for he shall return no more, nor
see his native country.
Do not
weep for the dead king; do not
mourn his loss.
Weep bitterly for the one who is exiled, for he will never return to
see his native land.
But he shall die in the place
whither they have led him
captive, and shall
see this land no more.
but he will die in the place to which he was exiled; he will never see this land again.”
And I will give thee into the hand of them that seek thy life, and into the hand of them whose face thou fearest, even into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of the Chaldeans.
In fact, I will hand you over to those you
dread, who want to take your life—to
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and to the Chaldeans.
Is this man Coniah a
despised broken
idol? is he a vessel wherein is no pleasure? wherefore are they cast out, he and his
seed, and are cast into a land which they know not?
Is this man Coniah a
despised and
shattered pot, a
jar that no one wants? Why are he and his descendants
hurled out and cast into a land they do not know?
Thus saith the LORD, Write ye this man childless, a man that shall not
prosper in his days: for no man of his
seed shall
prosper, sitting upon the throne of David, and ruling any more in Judah.
This is what the LORD says: “
Enroll this man as childless, a man who will not
prosper in his lifetime. None of his descendants will
prosper to sit on the throne of David or to rule again in Judah.”
But, The LORD liveth, which brought up and which led the
seed of the house of Israel out of the north country, and from all countries
whither I had driven them; and they shall dwell in their own land.
Instead they will say, ‘As surely as the LORD lives, who brought and led the descendants of the house of Israel up out of the land of the north and all the other lands to which He had banished them.’ Then they will dwell once more in their own land.”
And I have
seen folly in the prophets of Samaria; they
prophesied in
Baal, and caused my people Israel to
err.
“Among the prophets of Samaria I saw an offensive thing: They
prophesied by
Baal and led My people Israel
astray.
I have
seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an
horrible thing: they commit
adultery, and walk in lies: they
strengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none
doth return from his wickedness: they are all of them unto me as
Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as
Gomorrah.
And among the prophets of Jerusalem I have
seen a
horrible thing: They commit
adultery and walk in lies. They
strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one turns his back on wickedness. They are all like
Sodom to Me; the people of Jerusalem are like
Gomorrah.”
For who hath stood in the counsel of the LORD, and hath perceived and heard his word? who hath marked his word, and heard it?
But which of them has stood in the council of the LORD to
see and hear His word? Who has given
heed to His word and obeyed it?
Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.
“Can a man hide in secret places where I cannot see him?” declares the LORD. “Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?” declares the LORD.
Then said the LORD unto me, What seest thou, Jeremiah? And I said, Figs; the good figs, very good; and the evil, very evil, that cannot be eaten, they are so evil.
“Jeremiah,” the LORD asked, “what do you see?” “Figs!” I replied. “The good figs are very good, but the bad figs are very bad, so bad they cannot be eaten.”
As for me, behold, I am in your hand: do with me as seemeth good and meet unto you.
As for me, here I am in your hands; do to me what you think is good and right.
Did
Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him at all to death? did he not fear the LORD, and
besought the LORD, and the LORD
repented him of the evil which he had pronounced against them? Thus might we
procure great evil against our souls.
Did
Hezekiah king of Judah or
anyone else in Judah put him to death? Did
Hezekiah not fear the LORD and
seek His favor, and did not the LORD relent of the
disaster He had pronounced against them? But we are about to bring great
harm on ourselves!”
I have made the earth, the man and the beast that are upon the ground, by my great power and by my outstretched arm, and have given it unto whom it seemed meet unto me.
By My great power and outstretched arm, I made the earth and the men and beasts on the face of it, and I give it to whom I please.
And
seek the peace of the city
whither I have caused you to be carried away
captives, and pray unto the LORD for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.
Seek the prosperity of the city to which I have sent you as exiles. Pray to the LORD on its behalf, for if it prospers, you too will
prosper.”
And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.
Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will
punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite, and his
seed: he shall not have a man to dwell among this people; neither shall he behold the good that I will do for my people, saith the LORD; because he hath taught rebellion against the LORD.
this is what the LORD says: ‘I will surely
punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his descendants. He will have no one left among this people, nor will he
see the good that I will bring to My people, declares the LORD, for he has preached rebellion against the LORD.’”
Ask ye now, and
see whether a man
doth travail with child? wherefore do I
see every man with his hands on his loins, as a woman in
travail, and all faces are turned into paleness?
Ask now, and see: Can a male give birth? Why then do I see every man with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labor and every face turned pale?
Therefore fear thou not, O my servant Jacob, saith the LORD; neither be dismayed, O Israel: for, lo, I will save thee from
afar, and thy
seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and shall be in rest, and be quiet, and none shall make him afraid.
As for you, O Jacob My servant, do not be afraid, declares the LORD, and do not be dismayed, O Israel. For I will surely save you out of a distant place, your descendants from the land of their captivity! Jacob will return to quiet and ease, with no one to make him afraid.
All thy lovers have forgotten thee; they
seek thee not; for I have wounded thee with the wound of an enemy, with the
chastisement of a cruel one, for the multitude of thine iniquity; because thy sins were increased.
All your lovers have forgotten you; they no longer seek you, for I have struck you as an enemy would, with the discipline of someone cruel, because of your great iniquity and your numerous sins.
For I will restore health unto thee, and I will
heal thee of thy wounds, saith the LORD; because they called thee an Outcast, saying, This is
Zion, whom no man
seeketh after.
But I will restore your health and
heal your wounds, declares the LORD, because they call you an outcast,
Zion, for whom no one cares.”
Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will
sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the
seed of man, and with the
seed of beast.
“The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will
sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the
seed of man and of beast.
If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever.
“Only if this fixed order departed from My presence, declares the LORD, would Israel’s descendants ever cease to be a nation before Me.”
Thus saith the LORD; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the LORD.
This is what the LORD says: “Only if the heavens above could be measured and the foundations of the earth below searched out would I
reject all of Israel’s descendants because of all they have done,” declares the LORD.
And
Zedekiah king of Judah shall not escape out of the hand of the Chaldeans, but shall surely be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, and shall speak with him mouth to mouth, and his eyes shall behold his eyes;
Zedekiah king of Judah will not escape from the hands of the Chaldeans, but he will surely be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, and will speak with him face to face and
see him eye to eye.
Behold the mounts, they are come unto the city to take it; and the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans, that fight against it, because of the sword, and of the famine, and of the
pestilence: and what thou hast spoken is come to pass; and, behold, thou
seest it.
See how the siege ramps are mounted against the city to capture it. And by sword and famine and plague, the city has been given into the hands of the Chaldeans who are fighting against it. What You have spoken has happened, as You now see!
As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured: so will I multiply the seed of David my servant, and the Levites that minister unto me.
As the hosts of heaven cannot be counted and as the sand on the
seashore cannot be measured, so too will I multiply the descendants of My servant David and the Levites who minister before Me.”
Then will I cast away the seed of Jacob, and David my servant, so that I will not take any of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: for I will cause their captivity to return, and have mercy on them.
then I would also
reject the descendants of Jacob and of My servant David, so as not to take from his descendants rulers over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. For I will restore them from captivity and will have
compassion on them.”
And thou shalt not escape out of his hand, but shalt surely be taken, and delivered into his hand; and thine eyes shall behold the eyes of the king of Babylon, and he shall speak with thee mouth to mouth, and thou shalt go to Babylon.
And you
yourself will not escape his
grasp, but will surely be captured and delivered into his hand. You will
see the king of Babylon eye to eye and speak with him face to face; and you will go to Babylon.
I will even give them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life: and their dead bodies shall be for meat unto the fowls of the heaven, and to the beasts of the earth.
I will deliver into the hands of their enemies who seek their lives. Their corpses will become food for the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth.
And
Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes will I give into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that
seek their life, and into the hand of the king of Babylon’s army, which are gone up from you.
And I will deliver
Zedekiah king of Judah and his officials into the hands of their enemies who
seek their lives, to the army of the king of Babylon that had withdrawn from you.
Neither shall ye build house, nor
sow seed, nor plant
vineyard, nor have any: but all your days ye shall dwell in tents; that ye may live many days in the land where ye be strangers.
Nor are you ever to build a house or
sow seed or plant a
vineyard. Those things are not for you. Instead, you must live in tents all your lives, so that you may live a long time in the land where you
wander.’
Nor to build houses for us to dwell in: neither have we
vineyard, nor field, nor
seed:
Nor have we built houses in which to live, and we have not owned any vineyards or fields or crops.
And I will
punish him and his
seed and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring upon them, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the men of Judah, all the evil that I have pronounced against them; but they
hearkened not.
I will
punish him and his descendants and servants for their iniquity. I will bring on them, on the residents of Jerusalem, and on the men of Judah, all the
calamity about which I
warned them but they did not
listen.”
Therefore the princes said unto the king, We
beseech thee, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man
seeketh not the
welfare of this people, but the
hurt.
Then the officials said to the king, “This man ought to die, for he is discouraging the warriors who remain in this city, as well as all the people, by speaking such words to them; this man is not seeking the well-being of these people, but their ruin.”
So
Zedekiah the king
sware secretly unto Jeremiah, saying, As the LORD liveth, that made us this soul, I will not put thee to death, neither will I give thee into the hand of these men that
seek thy life.
But King
Zedekiah swore secretly to Jeremiah, “As surely as the LORD lives, who has given us this life, I will not kill you, nor will I deliver you into the hands of these men who are
seeking your life.”
And now, behold, I loose thee this day from the chains which were upon thine hand. If it
seem good unto thee to come with me into Babylon, come; and I will look well unto thee: but if it
seem ill unto thee to come with me into Babylon,
forbear: behold, all the land is before thee:
whither it
seemeth good and convenient for thee to go, thither go.
But now, behold, I am freeing you
today from the chains that were on your wrists. If it pleases you to come with me to Babylon, then come, and I will take care of you. But if it
seems wrong to you to come with me to Babylon, go no farther. Look, the whole land is before you. Wherever it
seems good and right to you, go there.”
Now while he was not yet gone back, he said, Go back also to Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon hath made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people: or go
wheresoever it
seemeth convenient unto thee to go. So the captain of the guard gave him
victuals and a reward, and let him go.
But before Jeremiah turned to go, Nebuzaradan added, “Return to Gedaliah son of
Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed over the cities of Judah, and stay with him among the people, or go
anywhere else that
seems right.” Then the captain of the guard gave him a
ration and a gift and released him.
Now it came to pass in the seventh month, that
Ishmael the son of Nethaniah the son of Elishama, of the
seed royal, and the princes of the king, even ten men with him, came unto Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam to
Mizpah; and there they did eat bread together in
Mizpah.
In the seventh month,
Ishmael son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, who was a member of the royal family and one of the king’s chief officers, came with ten men to Gedaliah son of
Ahikam at
Mizpah, and they
ate a meal together there.
And said unto Jeremiah the prophet, Let, we
beseech thee, our
supplication be accepted before thee, and pray for us unto the LORD thy God, even for all this
remnant; (for we are left but a few of many, as thine eyes do behold us:)
Jeremiah the prophet and said, “May our petition come before you; pray to the LORD your God on behalf of this entire
remnant. For few of us remain of the many, as you can
see with your own eyes.
Saying, No; but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we shall
see no war, nor hear the sound of the
trumpet, nor have hunger of bread; and there will we dwell:
and if you say, ‘No, but we will go to the land of Egypt and live there, where we will not see war or hear the sound of the ram’s horn or hunger for bread,’
For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; As mine anger and my
fury hath been poured forth upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem; so shall my
fury be poured forth upon you, when ye shall enter into Egypt: and ye shall be an
execration, and an
astonishment, and a
curse, and a reproach; and ye shall
see this place no more.
For this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Just as My anger and wrath were poured out on the residents of Jerusalem, so will My wrath be poured out on you if you go to Egypt. You will become an object of
cursing and
horror, of
vilification and disgrace, and you will never
see this place again.’
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Ye have
seen all the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, and upon all the cities of Judah; and, behold, this day they are a
desolation, and no man dwelleth therein,
“This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: You have
seen all the
disaster that I brought against Jerusalem and all the cities of Judah; and behold, they lie
today in ruins and
desolation Because ye have burned incense, and because ye have
sinned against the LORD, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD, nor walked in his law, nor in his statutes, nor in his
testimonies; therefore this evil is happened unto you, as at this day.
Because you burned incense and
sinned against the LORD, and did not obey the voice of the LORD or walk in His instruction, His statutes, and His
testimonies, this
disaster has
befallen you, as you
see today.”
Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will give Pharaoh-hophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies, and into the hand of them that
seek his life; as I gave
Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, his enemy, and that sought his life.
This is what the LORD says: Behold, I will deliver Pharaoh Hophra king of Egypt into the hands of his enemies who
seek his life, just as I delivered
Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the enemy who was
seeking his life.”
And
seekest thou great things for
thyself?
seek them not: for, behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh, saith the LORD: but thy life will I give unto thee for a prey in all places
whither thou goest.
But as for you, do you
seek great things for
yourself? Stop
seeking! For I will bring
disaster on every living creature, declares the LORD, but wherever you go, I will grant your life as a
spoil of war.”
Wherefore have I
seen them dismayed and turned away back? and their mighty ones are beaten down, and are fled
apace, and look not back: for fear was round about, saith the LORD.
Why am I
seeing this? They are
terrified, they are retreating; their warriors are defeated, they
flee in
haste without looking back; terror is on every side!” declares the LORD.
And I will deliver them into the hand of those that seek their lives, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of his servants: and afterward it shall be inhabited, as in the days of old, saith the LORD.
I will deliver them into the hands of those who
seek their lives—of
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and his officers. But after this, Egypt will be inhabited as in days of old, declares the LORD.
But fear not thou, O my servant Jacob, and be not dismayed, O Israel: for, behold, I will save thee from
afar off, and thy
seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and be in rest and at ease, and none shall make him afraid.
But you, O Jacob My servant, do not be afraid, and do not be dismayed, O Israel. For I will surely save you out of a distant place, your descendants from the land of their captivity! Jacob will return to quiet and ease, with no one to make him afraid.
Thus saith the LORD; Behold, waters rise up out of the north, and shall be an overflowing flood, and shall overflow the land, and all that is therein; the city, and them that dwell therein: then the men shall cry, and all the inhabitants of the land shall
howl.
This is what the LORD says: “
See how the waters are rising from the north and becoming an overflowing
torrent. They will overflow the land and its fullness, the cities and their inhabitants. The people will cry out, and all who dwell in the land will
wail How can it be quiet, seeing the LORD hath given it a charge against Ashkelon, and against the sea shore? there hath he appointed it.
How can it rest when the LORD has commanded it? He has appointed it against Ashkelon and the shore of its coastland.”
But I have made
Esau bare, I have uncovered his secret places, and he shall not be able to hide himself: his
seed is
spoiled, and his brethren, and his neighbours, and he is not.
But I will strip
Esau bare; I will uncover his hiding places, and he will be unable to
conceal himself. His descendants will be destroyed along with his relatives and neighbors, and he will be no more.
For I will cause
Elam to be dismayed before their enemies, and before them that
seek their life: and I will bring evil upon them even my fierce anger, saith the LORD; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them:
So I will
shatter Elam before their foes, before those who
seek their lives. I will bring
disaster upon them, even My fierce anger,” declares the LORD. “I will send out the sword after them until I finish them off.
In those days, and in that time, saith the LORD, the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together, going and
weeping: they shall go, and
seek the LORD their God.
“In those days and at that time, declares the LORD, the children of Israel and the children of Judah will come together,
weeping as they come, and will
seek the LORD their God.
And Jeremiah said to Seraiah, When thou comest to Babylon, and shalt see, and shalt read all these words;
And Jeremiah said to Seraiah, “When you get to Babylon,
see that you read all these words
aloud,
Jerusalem hath
grievously sinned; therefore she is removed: all that honoured her
despise her, because they have
seen her nakedness:
yea, she sigheth, and turneth backward.
Jerusalem has
sinned greatly; therefore she has become an object of
scorn. All who honored her now
despise her, for they have
seen her nakedness; she herself groans and turns away.
The
adversary hath spread out his hand upon all her pleasant things: for she hath
seen that the heathen entered into her sanctuary, whom thou
didst command that they should not enter into thy congregation.
The
adversary has seized all her treasures. For she has
seen the nations enter her sanctuary— those You had forbidden to enter Your assembly.
All her people
sigh, they
seek bread; they have given their pleasant things for meat to
relieve the soul:
see, O LORD, and consider; for I am become
vile.
All her people
groan as they search for bread. They have traded their treasures for food to keep themselves alive. Look, O LORD, and consider, for I have become
despised.
Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by? behold, and
see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me,
wherewith the LORD hath
afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger.
Is this nothing to you, all you who pass by? Look around and see! Is there any sorrow like mine, which was inflicted on me, which the LORD made me suffer on the day of His fierce anger?
Behold, O LORD; for I am in distress: my
bowels are troubled; mine heart is turned within me; for I have
grievously rebelled: abroad the sword bereaveth, at home there is as death.
See, O LORD, how distressed I am! I am
churning within; my heart is pounding within me, for I have been most
rebellious. Outside, the sword bereaves; inside, there is death.
Thy prophets have
seen vain and
foolish things for thee: and they have not discovered thine iniquity, to turn away thy captivity; but have
seen for thee false burdens and causes of
banishment.
The visions of your prophets were empty and
deceptive; they did not
expose your guilt to ward off your captivity. The burdens they envisioned for you were empty and misleading.
All thine enemies have opened their mouth against thee: they hiss and
gnash the teeth: they say, We have
swallowed her up: certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found, we have
seen it.
All your enemies open their mouths against you. They hiss and
gnash their teeth, saying, “We have
swallowed her up. This is the day for which we have waited. We have lived to
see it!”
I am the man that hath
seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.
I am the man who has
seen affliction under the rod of God’s wrath.
The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.
The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him.
Till the LORD look down, and behold from heaven.
until the LORD looks down from heaven and sees.
O LORD, thou hast seen my wrong: judge thou my cause.
You have
seen, O LORD, the wrong done to me;
vindicate my cause!
Thou hast
seen all their
vengeance and all their imaginations against me.
You have
seen all their
malice, all their plots against me.
Behold their sitting down, and their rising up; I am their musick.
When they sit and when they rise,
see how they
mock me in song.
Remember, O LORD, what is come upon us: consider, and behold our reproach.
Remember, O LORD, what has happened to us. Look and see our disgrace!
And I saw as the colour of
amber, as the appearance of fire round about within it, from the appearance of his loins even upward, and from the appearance of his loins even
downward, I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and it had brightness round about.
From what
seemed to be His
waist up, I saw a
gleam like
amber, with what looked like fire within it all around. And from what
seemed to be His
waist down, I saw what looked like fire; and brilliant light surrounded Him.
Then I arose, and went forth into the plain: and, behold, the glory of the LORD stood there, as the glory which I saw by the river of
Chebar: and I fell on my face.
So I got up and went out to the plain, and behold, the glory of the LORD was present there, like the glory I had seen by the River Kebar, and I fell facedown.
They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed: their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their
bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.
They will throw their silver into the streets, and their gold will
seem unclean. Their silver and gold cannot save them in the day of the wrath of the LORD. They cannot satisfy their appetites or fill their stomachs with wealth, for it became the
stumbling block that brought their iniquity.
Destruction cometh; and they shall seek peace, and there shall be none.
Anguish is coming! They will
seek peace, but find none.
Mischief shall come upon mischief, and rumour shall be upon rumour; then shall they seek a vision of the prophet; but the law shall perish from the priest, and counsel from the ancients.
Disaster upon
disaster will come, and
rumor after
rumor. Then they will
seek a vision from a prophet, but instruction from the priests will perish, as will counsel from the elders.
And, behold, the glory of the God of Israel was there, according to the vision that I saw in the plain.
And there I saw the glory of the God of Israel, like the vision I had seen in the plain.
He said
furthermore unto me, Son of man,
seest thou what they do? even the great abominations that the house of Israel committeth here, that I should go far off from my sanctuary? but turn thee yet again, and thou shalt
see greater abominations.
“Son of man,” He said to me, “do you
see what they are doing—the great abominations that the house of Israel is
committing—to drive Me far from My sanctuary? Yet you will
see even greater abominations.”
And he said unto me, Go in, and behold the wicked abominations that they do here.
Then He said to me, “Go in and
see the wicked abominations they are
committing here.”
Then said he unto me, Son of man, hast thou
seen what the ancients of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in the chambers of his
imagery? for they say, The LORD
seeth us not; the LORD hath
forsaken the earth.
“Son of man,” He said to me, “do you
see what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the darkness, each at the
shrine of his own
idol? For they are saying, ‘The LORD does not
see us; the LORD has
forsaken the land.’”
He said also unto me, Turn thee yet again, and thou shalt see greater abominations that they do.
Again, He told me, “You will
see them
committing even greater abominations.”
Then said he unto me, Hast thou seen this, O son of man? turn thee yet again, and thou shalt see greater abominations than these.
“Son of man,” He said to me, “do you see this? Yet you will see even greater abominations than these.”
Then he said unto me, Hast thou
seen this, O son of man? Is it a light thing to the house of Judah that they commit the abominations which they commit here? for they have filled the land with violence, and have returned to
provoke me to anger: and, lo, they put the branch to their nose.
“Son of man,” He said to me, “do you
see this? Is it not enough for the house of Judah to commit the abominations they are practicing here, that they must also fill the land with violence and continually
provoke Me to anger? Look, they are even putting the branch to their nose!
Then said he unto me, The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceeding great, and the land is full of blood, and the city full of
perverseness: for they say, The LORD hath
forsaken the earth, and the LORD
seeth not.
He replied, “The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great. The land is full of
bloodshed, and the city is full of
perversity. For they say, ‘The LORD has
forsaken the land; the LORD does not
see.’
And the cherubims were lifted up. This is the living creature that I saw by the river of
Chebar.
Then the
cherubim rose upward. These were the living creatures I had
seen by the River Kebar.
This is the living creature that I saw under the God of Israel by the river of
Chebar; and I knew that they were the cherubims.
These were the living creatures I had
seen beneath the God of Israel by the River Kebar, and I knew that they were
cherubim.
