But
shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should
repent and turn to God, and do works meet for
repentance.
First to those in Damascus and Jerusalem, then to
everyone in the region of
Judea, and then to the Gentiles, I declared that they should
repent and turn to God, performing deeds worthy of their
repentance.
That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should
shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles.
that the Christ would suffer, and as the first to rise from the dead, would
proclaim light to our people and to the Gentiles.”
And the barbarous people
shewed us no little kindness: for they
kindled a fire, and received us every one, because of the present rain, and because of the cold.
The islanders showed us extraordinary kindness. They
kindled a fire and
welcomed all of us because it was raining and cold.
And they said unto him, We neither received letters out of Judaea concerning thee, neither any of the brethren that came
shewed or spake any
harm of thee.
The leaders replied, “We have not received any letters about you from
Judea, nor have any of the brothers from there reported or even mentioned anything bad about you.
Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
For what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.
Which
shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while
accusing or else
excusing one another;)
So they show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts either
accusing or defending them
Their feet are swift to shed blood:
“Their feet are swift to shed blood;
And hope maketh not
ashamed; because the love of God is
shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
And hope does not
disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us.
For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.
For instance, a married woman is bound by law to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage.
So then if, while her husband liveth,
she be married to another man,
she shall be called an
adulteress: but if her husband be dead,
she is free from that law; so that
she is no
adulteress, though
she be married to another man.
So then, if
she is joined to another man while her husband is still alive,
she is called an
adulteress; but if her husband dies,
she is free from that law and is not an
adulteress, even if
she marries another man.
As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
As it is written: “For Your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”
It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.
not by works but by Him who calls, she was told, “The older will serve the younger.”
So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
So then, it does not depend on man’s desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.
For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might
shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.
For the Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display My power in you, and that My name might be proclaimed in all the earth.”
What if God, willing to
shew his wrath, and to make his power known,
endured with much
longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:
What if God, intending to show His wrath and make His power known, bore with great
patience the vessels of His wrath, prepared for destruction?
That ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in
whatsoever business
she hath need of you: for
she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also.
Welcome her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the saints, and assist her with anything
she may need from you. For
she has been a great help to many people, including me.
But and if
she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be
reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife.
But if
she does,
she must remain unmarried or else be
reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not
divorce his wife.
But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away.
To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord): If a brother has an unbelieving wife and
she is willing to live with him, he must not
divorce her.
And the woman which hath an husband that believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him.
And if a woman has an unbelieving husband and he is willing to live with her,
she must not
divorce him.
But and if thou marry, thou hast not
sinned; and if a virgin marry,
she hath not
sinned. Nevertheless such shall have trouble in the flesh: but I
spare you.
But if you do marry, you have not
sinned. And if a virgin marries,
she has not
sinned. But those who marry will face troubles in this life, and I want to
spare you this.
There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband.
and his interests are divided. The unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the work of the Lord, how she can be holy in both body and spirit. But the married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world, how she can please her husband.
But if any man think that he behaveth himself uncomely toward his virgin, if she pass the flower of her age, and need so require, let him do what he will, he sinneth not: let them marry.
However, if someone thinks he is acting inappropriately toward his
betrothed, and if
she is beyond her youth and they ought to marry, let him do as he wishes; he is not
sinning; they should get married.
The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord.
A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies,
she is free to marry
anyone she wishes, as long as he belongs to the Lord.
But
she is happier if
she so
abide, after my judgment: and I think also that I have the Spirit of God.
In my judgment, however, she is happier if she remains as she is. And I think that I too have the Spirit of God.
But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that
shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord’s, and the
fulness thereof:
But if someone tells you, “This food was offered to idols,” then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience—
But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if
she were
shaven.
And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for it is just as if her head were
shaved.
For if the woman be not covered, let her also be
shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be
shorn or
shaven, let her be covered.
If a woman does not cover her head,
she should have her hair cut off. And if it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut or
shaved off,
she should cover her head.
For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do
shew the Lord’s death till he come.
For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you
proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
But
covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet
shew I unto you a more excellent way.
But eagerly desire the greater gifts. And now I will show you the most excellent way.
Behold, I
shew you a
mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
Listen, I tell you a
mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed—
Wherefore
shew ye to them, and before the churches, the proof of your love, and of our
boasting on your behalf.
In full view of the churches, then, show these men the proof of your love and the reason for our
boasting about you.
For this
Agar is mount
Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in
bondage with her children.
Now
Hagar stands for Mount
Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present-day Jerusalem, because
she is in slavery with her children.
But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.
But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother.
For it is written,
Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the
desolate hath many more children than
she which hath an husband.
For it is written: “
Rejoice, O barren woman, who bears no children; break forth and cry
aloud, you who have never
travailed; because more are the children of the
desolate woman than of her who has a husband.”
As many as desire to make a fair
shew in the flesh, they
constrain you to be
circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ.
Those who want to make a good impression outwardly are trying to
compel you to be
circumcised. They only do this to avoid persecution for the cross of Christ.
That in the ages to come he might
shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
in order that in the coming ages He might display the
surpassing riches of His grace, demonstrated by His kindness to us in Christ Jesus.
Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
Nevertheless, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
And having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public
spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
Which things have indeed a
shew of wisdom in will worship, and
humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.
Such restrictions indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-prescribed worship, their false
humility, and their harsh treatment of the body; but they are of no value against the
indulgence of the flesh.
For they themselves
shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;
For they themselves report what kind of
welcome you gave us, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God
Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God,
shewing himself that he is God.
He will
oppose and
exalt himself above every so-called god or object of worship. So he will seat himself in the temple of God,
proclaiming himself to be God.
But for this very reason I was shown mercy, so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display His perfect
patience as an example to those who would believe in Him for eternal life.
But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to
usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; she is to remain quiet.
Women, however, will be saved through
childbearing, if they continue in faith, love, and
holiness, with self-control.
But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to
shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.
But if a widow has children or grandchildren, they must first learn to show
godliness to their own family and repay their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God.
Now
she that is a widow indeed, and
desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day.
The widow who is truly in need and left all alone puts her hope in God and continues night and day in her petitions and prayers.
But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.
But she who lives for pleasure is dead even while she is still alive.
Let not a widow be taken into the number under
threescore years old, having been the wife of one man,
A widow should be
enrolled if
she is at least sixty years old, the wife of one man,
Well reported of for good works; if
she have brought up children, if
she have
lodged strangers, if
she have washed the saints’ feet, if
she have relieved the
afflicted, if
she have
diligently followed every good work.
and well known for good deeds such as bringing up children,
entertaining strangers, washing the feet of the saints, imparting relief to the
afflicted, and
devoting herself to every good work.
If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them
relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it may
relieve them that are widows indeed.
If any believing woman has dependent widows, she must assist them and not allow the church to be burdened, so that it can help the widows who are truly in need.
Which in his times he shall
shew, who is the blessed and only
Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;
which the blessed and only Sovereign One—the King of kings and Lord of lords—will bring about in His own time.
Make every effort to present
yourself approved to God, an unashamed
workman who accurately handles the word of truth.
In everything, show
yourself to be an example by doing good works. In your teaching show
integrity, dignity,
not
stealing from them, but showing all good faith, so that in every respect they will
adorn the teaching about God our
Savior.
To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle,
shewing all
meekness unto all men.
to
malign no one, and to be peaceable and gentle, showing full consideration to
everyone.
Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
This is the Spirit He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our
Savior,
For God is not unrighteous to
forget your work and labour of love, which ye have
shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.
For God is not unjust. He will not
forget your work and the love you have shown for His name as you have ministered to the saints and continue to do so.
And we desire that every one of you do
shew the same
diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:
We want each of you to show this same
diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure.
Wherein God, willing more abundantly to
shew unto the heirs of promise the
immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:
So when God wanted to make the unchanging nature of His purpose very clear to the heirs of the promise, He
guaranteed it with an oath.
Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was
admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern
shewed to thee in the mount.
The place where they serve is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was
warned when he was about to build the tabernacle: “See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”
For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the
candlestick, and the table, and the
shewbread; which is called the sanctuary.
A tabernacle was prepared. In its first room were the lampstand, the table, and the consecrated bread. This was called the Holy Place.
And almost all things are by the law
purged with blood; and without
shedding of blood is no remission.
According to the law, in fact, nearly everything must be
purified with blood, and without the
shedding of blood there is no
forgiveness.
Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.
By faith
Sarah, even though
she was barren and beyond the proper age, was enabled to conceive a child, because
she considered Him faithful who had promised.
By faith the
harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when
she had received the
spies with peace.
They were stoned, they were sawed in two, they were put to death by the sword. They went around in
sheepskins and goatskins, destitute,
oppressed, and mistreated.
Ye have not yet resisted unto blood,
striving against sin.
In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of
shedding your blood.
Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great
shepherd of the
sheep, through the blood of the
everlasting covenant,
Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great
Shepherd of the
sheep,
For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.
For judgment without mercy will be shown to
anyone who has not been
merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works:
shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will
shew thee my faith by my works.
But someone will say, “You have faith and I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.
Likewise also was not
Rahab the
harlot justified by works, when
she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?
Who is a wise man and
endued with knowledge among you? let him
shew out of a good conversation his works with
meekness of wisdom.
Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good conduct, by deeds done in the
humility that comes from wisdom.
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should
shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, to
proclaim the virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into His
marvelous light.
For ye were as
sheep going
astray; but are now returned unto the
Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by
constraint, but willingly; not for
filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
Be
shepherds of God’s flock that is among you, watching over them not out of
compulsion, but because it is God’s will; not out of
greed, but out of eagerness;
And when the chief
Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.
And when the Chief
Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never
fade away.
Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.
because I know that this tent will soon be laid aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.
(For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and
shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
And this is the life that was revealed; we have seen it and
testified to it, and we
proclaim to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us.
These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead,
plucked up by the roots;
These men are hidden reefs in your love feasts,
shamelessly feasting with you but
shepherding only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried along by the wind; fruitless trees in autumn, twice dead after being uprooted.
The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to
shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and
signified it by his angel unto his servant John:
This is the revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants what must soon come to pass. He made it known by sending His angel to His servant John,
Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman
Jezebel, which calleth herself a
prophetess, to teach and to
seduce my servants to commit
fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.
But I have this against you: You
tolerate that woman
Jezebel, who calls herself a
prophetess. By her teaching
she misleads My servants to be sexually immoral and to eat food sacrificed to idols.
Even though I have given her time to
repent of her immorality,
she is unwilling.
After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a
trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up
hither, and I will
shew thee things which must be
hereafter.
After this I looked and saw a door standing open in heaven. And the voice I had previously heard speak to me like a
trumpet was saying, “Come up here, and I will show you what must happen after these things.”
And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when
she is
shaken of a mighty wind.
and the stars of the sky fell to the earth like unripe figs
dropping from a tree
shaken by a great wind.
For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall
wipe away all tears from their eyes.
For the Lamb in the center of the throne will be their
shepherd. ‘He will lead them to springs of living water,’ and ‘God will
wipe away every
tear from their eyes.’”
And
she being with child
cried,
travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.
She was
pregnant and crying out in the pain and
agony of giving birth.
And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the
dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to
devour her child as soon as it was born.
His tail swept a third of the stars from the sky,
tossing them to the earth. And the
dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, ready to
devour her child as soon as
she gave birth.
And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.
And
she gave birth to a son, a male child, who will rule all the nations with an iron
scepter. And her child was caught up to God and to His throne.
And the woman fled into the wilderness, where
she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and
threescore days.
And the woman fled into the wilderness, where God had prepared a place for her to be
nourished for 1,260 days.
And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that
she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where
she is
nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.
But the woman was given two wings of a great eagle to fly from the presence of the serpent to her place in the wilderness, where
she was
nourished for a time, and times, and half a time.
And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because
she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her
fornication.
Then a second angel followed, saying, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great, who has made all the nations drink the wine of the passion of her immorality.”
For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy.
For they have
spilled the blood of saints and prophets, and You have given them blood to drink, as they deserve.”
And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come
hither; I will
shew unto thee the judgment of the great
whore that sitteth upon many waters:
Then one of the seven angels with the seven
bowls came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the punishment of the great
prostitute, who sits on many waters.
And the woman was
arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and
filthiness of her
fornication:
The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls. She held in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the impurities of her sexual immorality.
And he
cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the
habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a
cage of every unclean and
hateful bird.
And he
cried out in a mighty voice: “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great!
She has become a
lair for demons and a
haunt for every unclean spirit, every unclean bird, and every
detestable beast.
Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.
Give back to her as
she has done to others; pay her back double for what
she has done;
mix her a double portion in her own cup.
How much
she hath
glorified herself, and lived
deliciously, so much
torment and sorrow give her: for
she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.
As much as
she has
glorified herself and lived in
luxury, give her the same measure of
torment and grief. In her heart
she says, ‘I sit as queen; I am not a widow and will never see grief.’
Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and
mourning, and famine; and
she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.
Therefore her plagues will come in one day— death and grief and famine— and she will be consumed by fire, for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.”
And
cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and
frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and
sheep, and horses, and
chariots, and slaves, and souls of men.
of
cinnamon,
spice, incense,
myrrh, and
frankincense; of wine, olive oil, fine flour, and wheat; of cattle,
sheep, horses, and
chariots; of slaves and souls of men.
Then they will throw dust on their heads as they
weep and
mourn and cry out: “
Woe,
woe to the great city, where all who had ships on the sea were enriched by her wealth! For in a single hour
she has been destroyed.”
