And it came to pass after these things, that the
son of the woman, the
mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so
sore, that there was no breath left in him.
Later, the son of the woman who owned the house became ill, and his sickness grew worse and worse, until no breath remained in him.
And she said unto
Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come unto me to call my sin to
remembrance, and to
slay my
son?
“O man of God,” said the woman to
Elijah, “what have you done to me? Have you come to remind me of my iniquity and cause the death of my
son?”
And he said unto her, Give me thy
son. And he took him out of her
bosom, and carried him up into a
loft, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed.
But
Elijah said to her, “Give me your
son.” So he took him from her arms, carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his own bed.
And he
cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I
sojourn, by
slaying her
son?
Then he
cried out to the LORD, “O LORD my God, have You also brought tragedy on this widow who has opened her home to me, by causing her
son to die?”
And
Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother: and
Elijah said, See, thy
son liveth.
Then
Elijah took the child, brought him down from the upper room into the house, and gave him to his mother. “Look, your
son is alive,”
Elijah declared.
And
Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the
sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall be thy name:
And
Elijah took twelve stones, one for each tribe of the
sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD had come and said, “Israel shall be your name.”
And
Jehu the
son of Nimshi shalt thou
anoint to be king over Israel: and
Elisha the
son of Shaphat of
Abel-meholah shalt thou
anoint to be prophet in thy room.
You are also to
anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel and
Elisha son of Shaphat from
Abel-meholah to succeed you as prophet.
So he departed thence, and found
Elisha the
son of Shaphat, who was
plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the
twelfth: and
Elijah passed by him, and cast his
mantle upon him.
And a certain man of the
sons of the prophets said unto his neighbour in the word of the LORD,
Smite me, I pray thee. And the man refused to
smite him.
Meanwhile, by the word of the LORD, one of the sons of the prophets said to his companion, “Strike me, please!” But the man refused to strike him.
And set two men,
sons of
Belial, before him, to bear witness against him, saying, Thou
didst blaspheme God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him, that he may die.
But seat two scoundrels opposite him and have them
testify, ‘You have
cursed both God and the king!’ Then take him out and stone him to death.”
I will make your house like that of
Jeroboam son of Nebat and like that of
Baasha son of
Ahijah, because you have
provoked My anger and caused Israel to sin.’
Seest thou how
Ahab humbleth himself before me? because he humbleth himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days: but in his
son’s days will I bring the evil upon his house.
“Have you seen how
Ahab has humbled himself before Me? Because he has humbled himself before Me, I will not bring the
calamity during his days, but I will bring it upon his house in the days of his
son.”
And the king of Israel said unto
Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, Micaiah the
son of Imlah, by whom we may
enquire of the LORD: but I
hate him; for he
doth not
prophesy good concerning me, but evil. And
Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.
The king of Israel answered, “There is still one man who can ask the LORD, but I
hate him because he never prophesies anything good for me, but only bad. He is Micaiah
son of Imlah.” “The king should not say that!”
Jehoshaphat replied.
Then the king of Israel called an officer, and said,
Hasten hither Micaiah the
son of Imlah.
So the king of Israel called one of his officials and said, “Bring Micaiah son of Imlah at once.”
And
Zedekiah the
son of Chenaanah made him horns of iron: and he said, Thus saith the LORD, With these shalt thou
push the Syrians, until thou have consumed them.
Now
Zedekiah son of Chenaanah had made for himself iron horns and declared, “This is what the LORD says: ‘With these you shall
gore the Arameans until they are finished off.’”
But
Zedekiah the
son of Chenaanah went near, and
smote Micaiah on the
cheek, and said, Which way went the Spirit of the LORD from me to speak unto thee?
Then
Zedekiah son of Chenaanah went up, struck Micaiah in the face, and demanded, “Which way did the Spirit of the LORD go when He departed from me to speak with you?”
And the king of Israel said, Take Micaiah, and carry him back unto Amon the governor of the city, and to
Joash the king’s
son;
And the king of Israel declared, “Take Micaiah and return him to Amon the governor of the city and to
Joash the king’s
son,
And
Ahab rested with his fathers, and his
son Ahaziah reigned in his place.
And
Jehoshaphat the
son of
Asa began to reign over Judah in the fourth year of
Ahab king of Israel.
In the fourth year of
Ahab’s reign over Israel,
Jehoshaphat son of
Asa became king of Judah.
And
Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father: and Jehoram his
son reigned in his
stead.
And
Jehoshaphat rested with his fathers and was buried with them in the city of his father David. And his
son Jehoram reigned in his place.
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the way of his father, and in the way of his mother, and in the way of
Jeroboam the
son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin:
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD and walked in the ways of his father and mother and of
Jeroboam son of Nebat, who had caused Israel to sin.
So he died according to the word of the LORD which
Elijah had spoken. And Jehoram reigned in his
stead in the second year of Jehoram the
son of
Jehoshaphat king of Judah; because he had no
son.
So
Ahaziah died according to the word of the LORD that
Elijah had spoken. And since he had no
son, Jehoram succeeded him in the second year of the reign of Jehoram
son of
Jehoshaphat over Judah.
And the
sons of the prophets that were at
Bethel came forth to
Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he said,
Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace.
Then the
sons of the prophets at
Bethel came out to
Elisha and said, “Do you know that the LORD will take your master away from you
today?” “
Yes, I know,” he replied. “Do not speak of it.”
And the
sons of the prophets that were at
Jericho came to
Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he answered,
Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace.
Then the
sons of the prophets at
Jericho came up to
Elisha and said, “Do you know that the LORD will take your master away from you
today?” “
Yes, I know,” he replied. “Do not speak of it.”
And fifty men of the
sons of the prophets went, and stood to view
afar off: and they two stood by Jordan.
Then a company of fifty of the
sons of the prophets went and stood at a distance, facing
Elijah and
Elisha as the two of them stood by the Jordan.
And when the
sons of the prophets which were to view at
Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of
Elijah doth rest on
Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.
When the
sons of the prophets who were facing him from
Jericho saw what had happened, they said, “The spirit of
Elijah rests on
Elisha.” And they went to meet him and bowed down to the ground before him.
Now Jehoram the
son of
Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria the
eighteenth year of
Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned twelve years.
In the
eighteenth year of
Jehoshaphat’s reign over Judah, Jehoram
son of
Ahab became king of Israel, and he reigned in Samaria twelve years.
Nevertheless he
cleaved unto the sins of
Jeroboam the
son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin; he departed not
therefrom.
Nevertheless, he
clung to the sins that
Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit; he did not turn away from them.
But
Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the LORD, that we may
enquire of the LORD by him? And one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said, Here is
Elisha the
son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of
Elijah.
But
Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no prophet of the LORD here? Let us inquire of the LORD through him.” And one of the servants of the king of Israel answered, “
Elisha son of Shaphat is here. He used to pour water on the hands of
Elijah.”
Then he took his eldest
son that should have reigned in his
stead, and offered him for a burnt offering upon the wall. And there was great
indignation against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.
So he took his
firstborn son, who was to succeed him, and offered him as a burnt offering on the city wall. And there was great
fury against the Israelites, so they withdrew and returned to their own land.
Now there
cried a certain woman of the wives of the
sons of the prophets unto
Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the LORD: and the
creditor is come to take unto him my two
sons to be
bondmen.
Now the wife of one of the
sons of the prophets
cried out to
Elisha, “Your servant, my husband, is dead, and you know that your servant feared the LORD. And now his
creditor is coming to take my two children as his slaves!”
And when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full.
Then go inside, shut the door behind you and your sons, and pour oil into all these jars, setting the full ones aside.”
So she went from him, and shut the door upon her and upon her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured out.
So she left him, and after she had shut the door behind her and her sons, they kept bringing jars to her, and she kept pouring.
And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed.
When all the jars were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another.” But he replied, “There are no more jars.” Then the oil stopped flowing.
Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest.
She went and told the man of God, and he said, “Go, sell the oil, and pay your debt. Then you and your sons can live on the remainder.”
And he said, What then is to be done for her? And Gehazi answered,
Verily she hath no child, and her husband is old.
So he asked, “Then what should be done for her?” “Well, she has no son,” Gehazi replied, “and her husband is old.”
And he said, About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a
son. And she said,
Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie unto thine
handmaid.
And
Elisha declared, “At this time next year, you will hold a
son in your arms.” “No, my lord,” she said. “Do not lie to your
maidservant, O man of God.”
And the woman conceived, and bare a
son at that season that
Elisha had said unto her, according to the time of life.
But the woman did conceive, and at that time the next year she gave birth to a
son, just as
Elisha had told her.
Then she said, Did I desire a
son of my lord? did I not say, Do not
deceive me?
Then she said, “Did I ask you for a
son, my lord? Didn’t I say, ‘Do not
deceive me?’”
And he called Gehazi, and said, Call this Shunammite. So he called her. And when she was come in unto him, he said, Take up thy son.
Elisha summoned Gehazi and said, “Call the Shunammite woman.” So he called her and she came. Then
Elisha said, “
Pick up your
son.”
Then she went in, and fell at his feet, and bowed herself to the ground, and took up her son, and went out.
She came in, fell at his feet, and bowed to the ground. Then she
picked up her
son and went out.
And
Elisha came again to
Gilgal: and there was a
dearth in the land; and the
sons of the prophets were sitting before him: and he said unto his servant, Set on the great pot, and
seethe pottage for the
sons of the prophets.
When
Elisha returned to
Gilgal, there was a famine in the land. As the
sons of the prophets were sitting at his feet, he said to his
attendant, “Put on the large pot and
boil some
stew for the
sons of the prophets.”
And he said, All is well. My master hath sent me, saying, Behold, even now there be come to me from mount Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets: give them, I pray thee, a talent of silver, and two changes of garments.
“Everything is all right,” Gehazi replied. “My master has sent me to say, ‘I have just now discovered that two young men from the sons of the prophets have come to me from the hill country of Ephraim. Please give them a talent of silver and two sets of clothing.’”
And the
sons of the prophets said unto
Elisha, Behold now, the place where we dwell with thee is too strait for us.
Now the
sons of the prophets said to
Elisha, “Please take note that the place where we meet with you is too small for us.
And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, This woman said unto me, Give thy
son, that we may eat him to day, and we will eat my
son to
morrow.
Then the king asked her, “What is the matter?” And she answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give up your
son, that we may eat him, and
tomorrow we will eat my
son.’
So we boiled my
son, and did eat him: and I said unto her on the next day, Give thy
son, that we may eat him: and she hath
hid her
son.
So we boiled my
son and
ate him, and the next day I said to her, ‘Give up your
son, that we may eat him.’ But she had hidden her
son.”
Then he said, God do so and more also to me, if the head of
Elisha the
son of Shaphat shall stand on him this day.
He
announced, “May God
punish me, and ever so severely, if the head of
Elisha son of Shaphat remains on his shoulders through this day!”
But
Elisha sat in his house, and the elders sat with him; and the king sent a man from before him: but
ere the
messenger came to him, he said to the elders, See ye how this
son of a murderer hath sent to take away mine head? look, when the
messenger cometh, shut the door, and hold him fast at the door: is not the sound of his master’s feet behind him?
Now
Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king sent a
messenger ahead, but before he arrived,
Elisha said to the elders, “Do you see how this murderer has sent someone to cut off my head? Look, when the
messenger comes, shut the door to keep him out. Is not the sound of his master’s footsteps behind him?”
Then spake
Elisha unto the woman, whose
son he had restored to life, saying, Arise, and go thou and thine household, and
sojourn wheresoever thou canst
sojourn: for the LORD hath called for a famine; and it shall also come upon the land seven years.
Now
Elisha had said to the woman whose
son he had restored to life, “Arise, you and your household; go and live as a foreigner wherever you can. For the LORD has decreed a seven-year famine, and it has already come to the land.”
And it came to pass, as he was telling the king how he had restored a dead body to life, that, behold, the woman, whose
son he had restored to life,
cried to the king for her house and for her land. And Gehazi said, My lord, O king, this is the woman, and this is her
son, whom
Elisha restored to life.
And Gehazi was telling the king how
Elisha had brought the dead back to life. Just then the woman whose
son Elisha had revived came to appeal to the king for her house and her land. So Gehazi said, “My lord the king, this is the woman, and this is the
son Elisha restored to life.”
So
Hazael went to meet him, and took a present with him, even of every good thing of Damascus, forty camels’ burden, and came and stood before him, and said, Thy
son Ben-
hadad king of Syria hath sent me to thee, saying, Shall I recover of this disease?
So
Hazael went to meet
Elisha, taking with him a gift of forty
camel loads of every good thing from Damascus. And he went in and stood before him and said, “Your
son Ben-
hadad king of
Aram has sent me to ask, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’”
And in the fifth year of
Joram the
son of
Ahab king of Israel,
Jehoshaphat being then king of Judah, Jehoram the
son of
Jehoshaphat king of Judah began to reign.
In the fifth year of the reign of
Joram son of
Ahab over Israel, Jehoram
son of
Jehoshaphat succeeded his father as king of Judah.
And
Joram slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David: and
Ahaziah his
son reigned in his
stead.
And Jehoram rested with his fathers and was buried with them in the City of David. And his
son Ahaziah reigned in his place.
In the
twelfth year of
Joram the
son of
Ahab king of Israel did
Ahaziah the
son of Jehoram king of Judah begin to reign.
And he walked in the way of the house of
Ahab, and did evil in the sight of the LORD, as did the house of
Ahab: for he was the
son in law of the house of
Ahab.
And
Ahaziah walked in the ways of the house of
Ahab and did evil in the sight of the LORD like the house of
Ahab, for he was a
son-in-law of the house of
Ahab.
And king
Joram went back to be
healed in
Jezreel of the wounds which the Syrians had given him at
Ramah, when he fought against
Hazael king of Syria. And
Ahaziah the
son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see
Joram the
son of
Ahab in
Jezreel, because he was sick.
So King
Joram returned to
Jezreel to recover from the wounds that the Arameans had inflicted on him at
Ramah when he fought against
Hazael king of
Aram. Then
Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to
Jezreel to visit
Joram son of
Ahab, because
Joram had been wounded.
And
Elisha the prophet called one of the children of the prophets, and said unto him,
Gird up thy loins, and take this box of oil in thine hand, and go to
Ramoth-
gilead:
Now
Elisha the prophet summoned one of the
sons of the prophets and said to him, “
Tuck your
cloak under your belt, take this
flask of oil, and go to
Ramoth-
gilead.
And when thou comest thither, look out there
Jehu the
son of
Jehoshaphat the
son of Nimshi, and go in, and make him arise up from among his brethren, and carry him to an inner chamber;
When you arrive, look for
Jehu son of
Jehoshaphat, the
son of Nimshi. Go in, get him away from his companions, and take him to an inner room.
And I will make the house of
Ahab like the house of
Jeroboam the
son of Nebat, and like the house of
Baasha the
son of
Ahijah:
And the
watchman told, saying, He came even unto them, and cometh not again: and the driving is like the driving of
Jehu the
son of Nimshi; for he driveth
furiously.
Again the
watchman reported, “He reached them, but he is not coming back. And the
charioteer is driving like
Jehu son of Nimshi—he is driving like a
madman!”
Surely I have seen
yesterday the blood of
Naboth, and the blood of his
sons, saith the LORD; and I will requite thee in this
plat, saith the LORD. Now therefore take and cast him into the
plat of ground, according to the word of the LORD.
‘As surely as I saw the blood of
Naboth and the blood of his
sons yesterday, declares the LORD, so will I repay you on this plot of ground, declares the LORD.’ Now then, according to the word of the LORD,
pick him up and throw him on the plot of ground.”
And
Ahab had seventy
sons in Samaria. And
Jehu wrote letters, and sent to Samaria, unto the rulers of
Jezreel, to the elders, and to them that brought up
Ahab’s children, saying,
Now
Ahab had seventy
sons in Samaria. So
Jehu wrote letters and sent them to Samaria to the officials of
Jezreel, to the elders, and to the guardians of the
sons of
Ahab, saying:
Now as soon as this letter cometh to you, seeing your master’s
sons are with you, and there are with you
chariots and horses, a
fenced city also, and armour;
“When this letter arrives, since your master’s
sons are with you and you have
chariots and horses, a fortified city and
weaponry,
Look even out the best and meetest of your master’s sons, and set him on his father’s throne, and fight for your master’s house.
select the best and most worthy son of your master, set him on his father’s throne, and fight for your master’s house.”
Then he wrote a letter the second time to them, saying, If ye be mine, and if ye will
hearken unto my voice, take ye the heads of the men your master’s
sons, and come to me to
Jezreel by to
morrow this time. Now the king’s
sons, being seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, which brought them up.
Then
Jehu wrote them a second letter and said: “If you are on my side, and if you will obey me, then bring the heads of your master’s
sons to me at
Jezreel by this time
tomorrow.” Now the
sons of the king, seventy in all, were being brought up by the leading men of the city.
And it came to pass, when the letter came to them, that they took the king’s
sons, and
slew seventy persons, and put their heads in baskets, and sent him them to
Jezreel.
And when the letter arrived, they took the
sons of the king and slaughtered all seventy of them. They put their heads in baskets and sent them to
Jehu at
Jezreel.
And there came a
messenger, and told him, saying, They have brought the heads of the king’s
sons. And he said, Lay ye them in two heaps at the entering in of the gate until the morning.
When the
messenger arrived, he told
Jehu, “They have brought the heads of the
sons of the king.” And
Jehu ordered, “Pile them in two heaps at the entrance of the gate until morning.”
Jehu met with the brethren of
Ahaziah king of Judah, and said, Who are ye? And they answered, We are the brethren of
Ahaziah; and we go down to
salute the children of the king and the children of the queen.
Jehu met some relatives of
Ahaziah king of Judah and asked, “Who are you?” “We are relatives of
Ahaziah,” they answered, “and we have come down to
greet the
sons of the king and of the queen mother.”
And when he was departed thence, he lighted on Jehonadab the
son of Rechab coming to meet him: and he
saluted him, and said to him, Is thine heart right, as my heart is with thy heart? And Jehonadab answered, It is. If it be, give me thine hand. And he gave him his hand; and he took him up to him into the
chariot.
When he left there, he found Jehonadab
son of Rechab, who was coming to meet him.
Jehu greeted him and asked, “Is your heart as true to mine as my heart is to yours?” “It is!” Jehonadab replied. “If it is,” said
Jehu, “give me your hand.” So he gave him his hand, and
Jehu helped him into his
chariot,
And
Jehu went, and Jehonadab the
son of Rechab, into the house of
Baal, and said unto the worshippers of
Baal, Search, and look that there be here with you none of the servants of the LORD, but the worshippers of
Baal only.
Next,
Jehu and Jehonadab
son of Rechab entered the temple of
Baal, and
Jehu said to the servants of
Baal, “Look around to see that there are no servants of the LORD here among you—only servants of
Baal.”
Howbeit from the sins of
Jeroboam the
son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin,
Jehu departed not from after them, to wit, the golden
calves that were in
Bethel, and that were in
Dan.
but he did not turn away from the sins that
Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit—the worship of the golden
calves at
Bethel and
Dan.
And the LORD said unto
Jehu, Because thou hast done well in
executing that which is right in mine eyes, and hast done unto the house of
Ahab according to all that was in mine heart, thy children of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel.
Nevertheless, the LORD said to
Jehu, “Because you have done well in carrying out what is right in My sight and have done to the house of
Ahab all that was in My heart, four generations of your
sons will sit on the throne of Israel.”
And
Jehu rested with his fathers and was buried in Samaria, and his
son Jehoahaz reigned in his place.
And when
Athaliah the mother of
Ahaziah saw that her
son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the seed royal.
But Jehosheba daughter of King
Joram, the sister of
Ahaziah, took
Joash son of
Ahaziah and
stole him away from among the
sons of the king who were being murdered. She put him and his
nurse in a
bedroom to hide him from
Athaliah, and he was not killed.
And the seventh year Jehoiada sent and
fetched the rulers over hundreds, with the captains and the guard, and brought them to him into the house of the LORD, and made a covenant with them, and took an oath of them in the house of the LORD, and shewed them the king’s
son.
Then in the seventh year, Jehoiada sent for the commanders of hundreds, the Carites, and the guards, and had them brought into the house of the LORD. There he made a covenant with them and put them under oath. He showed them the king’s son
And he brought forth the king’s
son, and put the crown upon him, and gave him the testimony; and they made him king, and
anointed him; and they
clapped their hands, and said, God save the king.
Then Jehoiada brought out the king’s
son, put the crown on him, presented him with the Testimony, and proclaimed him king. They
anointed him, and the people
clapped their hands and declared, “Long live the king!”
For Jozachar the
son of Shimeath, and Jehozabad the
son of Shomer, his servants,
smote him, and he died; and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David: and
Amaziah his
son reigned in his
stead.
His servants Jozabad
son of Shimeath and Jehozabad
son of Shomer struck him down, and he died. And they buried him with his fathers in the City of David, and his
son Amaziah reigned in his place.
In the three and
twentieth year of
Joash the
son of
Ahaziah king of Judah
Jehoahaz the
son of
Jehu began to reign over Israel in Samaria, and reigned seventeen years.
In the twenty-third year of the reign of
Joash son of
Ahaziah over Judah,
Jehoahaz son of
Jehu became king of Israel, and he reigned in Samaria seventeen years.
And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, and followed the sins of
Jeroboam the
son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin; he departed not
therefrom.
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD and followed the sins that
Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit; he did not turn away from them.
And the anger of the LORD was
kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hand of
Hazael king of Syria, and into the hand of Ben-
hadad the
son of
Hazael, all their days.
So the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He delivered them continually into the hands of
Hazael king of
Aram and his
son Ben-
hadad.
And
Jehoahaz rested with his fathers and was buried in Samaria. And his
son Jehoash reigned in his place.
In the thirty and seventh year of
Joash king of Judah began Jehoash the
son of
Jehoahaz to reign over Israel in Samaria, and reigned sixteen years.
In the thirty-seventh year of the reign of
Joash over Judah, Jehoash
son of
Jehoahaz became king of Israel in Samaria, and he reigned sixteen years.
And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD; he departed not from all the sins of
Jeroboam the
son of Nebat, who made Israel sin: but he walked therein.
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD and did not turn away from all the sins that
Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit, but he walked in them.
And Jehoash the
son of
Jehoahaz took again out of the hand of Ben-
hadad the
son of
Hazael the cities, which he had taken out of the hand of
Jehoahaz his father by war. Three times did
Joash beat him, and recovered the cities of Israel.
Then Jehoash
son of
Jehoahaz took back from Ben-
hadad son of
Hazael the cities that
Hazael had taken in battle from his father
Jehoahaz. Jehoash defeated Ben-
hadad three times, and so recovered the cities of Israel.
In the second year of the reign of Jehoash
son of
Jehoahaz over Israel,
Amaziah son of
Joash became king of Judah.
But the children of the murderers he
slew not: according unto that which is written in the book of the law of Moses, wherein the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, nor the children be put to death for the fathers; but every man shall be put to death for his own sin.
Yet he did not put the sons of the murderers to death, but acted according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, where the LORD commanded: “Fathers must not be put to death for their children, and children must not be put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin.”
Then
Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash, the
son of
Jehoahaz son of
Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us look one another in the face.
Then
Amaziah sent messengers to the king of Israel Jehoash
son of
Jehoahaz, the
son of
Jehu. “Come, let us meet face to face,” he said.
And Jehoash the king of Israel sent to
Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The
thistle that was in
Lebanon sent to the
cedar that was in
Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my
son to wife: and there passed by a wild beast that was in
Lebanon, and
trode down the
thistle.
And Jehoash king of Israel took
Amaziah king of Judah, the
son of Jehoash the
son of
Ahaziah, at Beth-shemesh, and came to Jerusalem, and
brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim unto the corner gate, four hundred cubits.
There at Beth-shemesh, Jehoash king of Israel captured
Amaziah king of Judah, the
son of
Joash, the
son of
Ahaziah. Then Jehoash went to Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate—a section of four hundred cubits.
And Jehoash
slept with his fathers, and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel; and
Jeroboam his
son reigned in his
stead.
And Jehoash rested with his fathers and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel. And his
son Jeroboam reigned in his place.
And
Amaziah the
son of
Joash king of Judah lived after the death of Jehoash
son of
Jehoahaz king of Israel fifteen years.
Amaziah son of
Joash king of Judah lived for fifteen years after the death of Jehoash
son of
Jehoahaz king of Israel.
In the
fifteenth year of the reign of
Amaziah son of
Joash over Judah,
Jeroboam son of Jehoash became king of Israel, and he reigned in Samaria forty-one years.
And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD: he departed not from all the sins of
Jeroboam the
son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin.
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD and did not turn away from all the sins that
Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit.
