Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul;
Why is light given to
the miserable, and life to
the bitter of soul,
Which
rejoice exceedingly, and are
glad, when
they can find
the grave?
For my
sighing cometh before I eat, and my roarings are poured out like
the waters.
I
sigh when food is put before me, and my groans pour out like water.
For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.
For
the thing I feared has overtaken me, and what I
dreaded has
befallen me.
Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:
“If one ventures a word with you, will you be
wearied? Yet who can keep from speaking?
Behold, thou hast
instructed many, and thou hast strengthened
the weak hands.
Surely you have
instructed many, and have strengthened
their feeble hands.
Thy words have upholden him that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees.
But now it is come upon thee, and thou faintest; it toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.
But now trouble has come upon you, and you are
weary. It strikes you, and you are dismayed.
Is not this thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the uprightness of thy ways?
Is your reverence not your confidence, and the uprightness of your ways your hope?
Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off?
Consider now, I
plead: Who, being innocent, has ever perished? Or where have
the upright been destroyed?
Even as I have seen,
they that
plow iniquity, and
sow wickedness,
reap the same.
As I have observed, those who
plow iniquity and those who
sow trouble
reap the same.
By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed.
By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of His anger they are consumed.
The roaring of
the lion, and
the voice of
the fierce lion, and
the teeth of
the young lions, are broken.
The lion may
roar, and
the fierce lion may
growl, yet
the teeth of
the young lions are broken.
The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, and
the stout lion’s whelps are scattered abroad.
The old lion perishes for lack of prey, and
the cubs of
the lioness are scattered.
Now a thing was secretly brought to me, and mine ear received a little thereof.
Now a word came to me secretly; my ears caught a
whisper of it.
In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men,
In disquieting visions in the night, when deep sleep falls on men,
Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up:
It stood still, but I could not
discern the form
thereof: an image was before mine eyes,
there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying,
It stood still, but I could not
discern its appearance; a form
loomed before my eyes, and I heard a
whispering voice:
How much less in
them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in
the dust, which are
crushed before
the moth?
how much more those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundations are in
the dust, who can be
crushed like a
moth!
They are destroyed from morning to evening: they perish for ever without any regarding it.
Doth not
their excellency which is in
them go away?
they die, even without wisdom.
Are not their tent cords pulled up, so that they die without wisdom?’
Call now, if
there be any that will answer
thee; and to which of
the saints
wilt thou turn?
“Call out if you please, but who will answer? To which of the holy ones will you turn?
For resentment kills a
fool, and
envy slays
the simple.
I have seen a
fool taking root, but suddenly his house was
cursed.
His children are far from safety, and
they are
crushed in
the gate, neither is
there any to deliver
them.
His sons are far from safety,
crushed in court without a defender.
Whose harvest
the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of
the thorns, and
the robber swalloweth up
their substance.
Although
affliction cometh not forth of
the dust, neither
doth trouble spring out of
the ground;
For distress does not spring from
the dust, and trouble does not
sprout from
the ground.
Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.
Yet man is born to trouble as surely as sparks fly upward.
Which doeth great things and unsearchable; marvellous things without number:
the One who does great and unsearchable things, wonders without number.
Who giveth rain upon the earth, and sendeth waters upon the fields:
He gives rain to the earth and sends water upon the fields.
To set up on high those that be low; that those which
mourn may be
exalted to safety.
He sets the lowly on high, so that mourners are lifted to safety.
He disappointeth
the devices of
the crafty, so that
their hands cannot perform
their enterprise.
He thwarts
the schemes of
the crafty, so that
their hands find no success.
But he saveth the poor from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty.
He saves
the needy from
the sword in
their mouth and from
the clutches of
the powerful.
So the poor hath hope, and iniquity stoppeth her mouth.
So the poor have hope, and injustice shuts its mouth.
Blessed indeed is
the man whom God corrects; so do not
despise the discipline of
the Almighty.
He shall deliver
thee in six troubles:
yea, in seven
there shall no evil touch
thee.
In famine he shall
redeem thee from death: and in war from
the power of
the sword.
In famine He will
redeem you from death, and in battle from
the stroke of
the sword.
Thou shalt be
hid from
the scourge of
the tongue: neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh.
You will be hidden from
the scourge of
the tongue, and will not fear
havoc when it comes.
At destruction and famine thou shalt
laugh: neither shalt thou be afraid of
the beasts of
the earth.
You will
laugh at destruction and famine, and need not fear
the beasts of
the earth.
For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field: and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.
For you will have a covenant with the stones of the field, and the wild animals will be at peace with you.
Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great, and thine offspring as the grass of the earth.
You will know that your offspring will be many, your descendants like the grass of the earth.
Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like as a
shock of corn cometh in in his season.
You will come to
the grave in full
vigor, like a
sheaf of grain gathered in season.
But Job answered and said,
Then Job replied:
O that my grief were throughly
weighed, and my
calamity laid in
the balances together!
“If only my grief could be
weighed and placed with my
calamity on
the scales.
For now it would be heavier than
the sand of
the sea:
therefore my words are
swallowed up.
For
then it would
outweigh the sand of
the seas— no wonder my words have been
rash.
For
the arrows of
the Almighty are within me,
the poison
whereof drinketh up my spirit:
the terrors of God do set
themselves in
array against me.
For
the arrows of
the Almighty have pierced me; my spirit drinks in
their poison;
the terrors of God are
arrayed against me.
Can that which is unsavoury be eaten without salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg?
Is tasteless food eaten without salt, or is
there flavor in
the white of an egg?
The things that my soul refused to touch are as my sorrowful meat.
My soul refuses to touch
them;
they are
loathsome food to me.
Oh that I might have my request; and that God would grant me the thing that I long for!
If only my request were granted and God would
fulfill my hope:
Then should I yet have comfort;
yea, I would
harden myself in sorrow: let him not
spare; for I have not concealed
the words of
the Holy One.
It still brings me comfort, and joy through
unrelenting pain, that I have not denied
the words of
the Holy One.
Is my strength the strength of stones? or is my flesh of brass?
Is my strength like that of stone, or my flesh made of bronze?
Is not my help in me? and is wisdom driven quite from me?
Is there any help within me now that success is driven from me?
To him that is
afflicted pity should be shewed from his friend; but he forsaketh
the fear of
the Almighty.
A
despairing man should have
the kindness of his friend, even if he forsakes
the fear of
the Almighty.
But my brothers are as faithless as wadis, as
seasonal streams that overflow,
Which are
blackish by reason of
the ice, and wherein
the snow is
hid:
darkened because of
the ice and
the inflow of melting snow,
What time
they wax warm,
they vanish: when it is hot,
they are consumed out of
their place.
but ceasing in
the dry season and
vanishing from
their channels in
the heat.
The paths of their way are turned aside; they go to nothing, and perish.
Caravans turn aside from their routes; they go into the wasteland and perish.
The troops of Tema looked,
the companies of
Sheba waited for
them.
The caravans of Tema look for water;
the travelers of
Sheba hope to find it.
They were confounded because
they had hoped;
they came thither, and were
ashamed.
They are confounded because they had hoped; their arrival brings disappointment.
Or, Deliver me from
the enemy’s hand? or,
Redeem me from
the hand of
the mighty?
Do ye imagine to reprove words, and
the speeches of one that is
desperate, which are as wind?
Do you intend to correct my words, and treat as wind my cry of
despair?
You would even cast lots for an
orphan and
barter away your friend.
Now therefore be content, look upon me; for it is evident unto you if I lie.
But now, please look at me. Would I lie to your face?
Is
there not an appointed time to man upon earth? are not his days also like
the days of an
hireling?
“Is not man
consigned to labor on earth? Are not his days like those of a
hired hand?
As a servant earnestly desireth
the shadow, and as an
hireling looketh for
the reward of his work:
Like a slave he longs for shade; like a
hireling he waits for his wages.
When I lie down, I say, When shall I arise, and
the night be gone? and I am full of tossings to and
fro unto
the dawning of
the day.
When I lie down I think: ‘When will I get up?’ But
the night drags on, and I
toss and turn until
dawn.
My days are swifter than a
weaver’s
shuttle, and are spent without hope.
My days are swifter than a
weaver’s
shuttle;
they come to an end without hope.
The eye of him that hath seen me shall see me no more: thine eyes are upon me, and I am not.
The eye that beholds me will no longer see me. You will look for me, but I will be no more.
As the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away: so he that goeth down to the grave shall come up no more.
As a cloud vanishes and is gone, so he who goes down to
Sheol does not come back up.
Therefore I will not
refrain my mouth; I will speak in
the anguish of my spirit; I will
complain in
the bitterness of my soul.
Therefore I will not restrain my mouth; I will speak in
the anguish of my spirit; I will
complain in
the bitterness of my soul.
Am I a sea, or a
whale, that thou settest a watch over me?
Am I
the sea, or
the monster of
the deep, that You must keep me under guard?
Then thou scarest me with dreams, and terrifiest me through visions:
I have
sinned; what shall I do unto
thee, O thou preserver of men? why hast thou set me as a mark against
thee, so that I am a burden to myself?
If I have
sinned, what have I done to You, O watcher of mankind? Why have You made me Your
target, so that I am a burden to You?
And why
dost thou not
pardon my
transgression, and take away mine iniquity? for now shall I sleep in
the dust; and thou shalt seek me in
the morning, but I shall not be.
Why do You not
pardon my
transgression and take away my iniquity? For soon I will lie down in
the dust; You will seek me, but I will be no more.”
Then answered
Bildad the Shuhite, and said,
Then Bildad the Shuhite replied:
How long
wilt thou speak
these things? and how long shall
the words of thy mouth be like a strong wind?
“How long will you go on saying such things?
The words of your mouth are a
blustering wind.
When your children
sinned against Him, He gave
them over to
their rebellion.
But if you would earnestly seek God and ask
the Almighty for mercy,
If thou
wert pure and upright; surely now he would
awake for
thee, and make
the habitation of thy righteousness prosperous.
if you are pure and upright, even now He will
rouse Himself on your behalf and restore your righteous estate.
For
enquire, I pray
thee, of
the former age, and prepare
thyself to
the search of
their fathers:
Please inquire of past generations and consider the discoveries of their fathers.
Shall not they teach thee, and tell thee, and utter words out of their heart?
Will they not teach you and tell you, and speak from their understanding?
Can
the rush grow up without
mire? can
the flag grow without water?
Does
papyrus grow where
there is no marsh? Do reeds
flourish without water?
Whilst it is yet in his greenness, and not cut down, it withereth before any other
herb.
While the shoots are still uncut, they dry up quicker than grass.
So are
the paths of all that
forget God; and
the hypocrite’s hope shall perish:
Such is
the destiny of all who
forget God; so
the hope of
the godless will perish.
He is green before the sun, and his branch shooteth forth in his garden.
He is a well-watered plant in
the sunshine, spreading its shoots over
the garden.
His roots
wrap around
the rock
heap; he looks for a home among
the stones.
If he destroy him from his place, then it shall deny him, saying, I have not seen thee.
If he is uprooted from his place, it will disown him, saying, ‘I never saw you.’
Behold, this is the joy of his way, and out of the earth shall others grow.
Surely this is the joy of his way; yet others will spring from the dust.
Behold, God will not cast away a perfect man, neither will he help the evil doers:
They that
hate thee shall be clothed with shame; and
the dwelling place of
the wicked shall come to
nought.
Your enemies will be clothed in shame, and the tent of the wicked will be no more.”
Then Job answered and said,
Then Job answered:
Which removeth the mountains, and they know not: which overturneth them in his anger.
He moves mountains without their knowledge and overturns them in His anger.
Which shaketh
the earth out of her place, and
the pillars
thereof tremble.
He shakes
the earth from its place, so that its foundations
tremble.
Which commandeth the sun, and it riseth not; and sealeth up the stars.
He commands
the sun not to
shine; He seals off
the stars.
