understanding striketh hands, and becometh
surety in the presence of his friend.

pledge and puts up security for his
neighbor.
Wisdom is before him that hath
understanding; but the eyes of a
fool are in the ends of the earth.

fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of
understanding.
Even a
fool is considered wise if he keeps silent, and
discerning when he holds his tongue.

fool hath no delight in
understanding, but that his heart may discover itself.
A
fool does not delight in
understanding, but only in airing his opinions.
He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good.
He who acquires wisdom loves himself; one who safeguards understanding will find success.

scorner, and the simple will
beware: and reprove one that hath
understanding, and he will
understand knowledge.

Man’s goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?
A man’s steps are from the LORD, so how can
anyone understand his own way?
The man that wandereth out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead.
The man who strays from the path of understanding will rest in the assembly of the dead.
There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD.
There is no wisdom, no understanding, no counsel that can prevail against the LORD.
The mouth of strange women is a deep pit: he that is
abhorred of the LORD shall fall therein.
The mouth of an
adulteress is a deep pit; he who is
under the wrath of the LORD will fall into it.
If thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?
If you have nothing with which to pay, why should your bed be taken from under you?
Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and
understanding.
Invest in truth and never sell it— in wisdom and instruction and
understanding.
Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established:
By wisdom a house is built and by understanding it is established;
I went by the field of the
slothful, and by the
vineyard of the man void of
understanding;
I went past the field of a slacker and by the
vineyard of a man lacking judgment.
As the bird by wandering, as the
swallow by flying, so the
curse causeless shall not come.
For the
transgression of a land many are the princes thereof: but by a man of
understanding and knowledge the state thereof shall be prolonged.

understand justice, but those who seek the LORD
comprehend fully.

conceit; but the poor that hath
understanding searcheth him out.

discernment sees through him.
A servant will not be corrected by words: for though he understand he will not answer.
A servant cannot be corrected by words alone; though he
understands, he will not
respond.
Surely I am more
brutish than any man, and have not the
understanding of a man.
Surely I am the most ignorant of men, and I lack the understanding of a man.
There be three things which are too wonderful for me,
yea, four which I know not:
There are three things too wonderful for me, four that I cannot understand:
For three things the earth is disquieted, and for four which it cannot bear:
Under three things the earth trembles, under four it cannot bear up:
What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?
What does a man gain from all his labor, at which he toils under the sun?
The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
What has been will be again, and what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.
And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done
under heaven: this
sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised
therewith.
And I set my mind to seek and
explore by wisdom all that is done
under heaven. What a heavy burden God has laid upon the sons of men to occupy them!
I have seen all the works that are done
under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and
vexation of spirit.
I have seen all the things that are done
under the sun, and have found them all to be
futile, a pursuit of the wind.
I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet
acquainting mine heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the sons of men, which they should do
under the heaven all the days of their life.
I sought to
cheer my body with wine and to embrace folly—my mind still guiding me with wisdom—until I could see what was
worthwhile for men to do
under heaven during the few days of their lives.
Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and
vexation of spirit, and there was no profit
under the sun.
Yet when I considered all the works that my hands had accomplished and what I had
toiled to
achieve, I found everything to be
futile, a pursuit of the wind; there was nothing to be gained
under the sun.
Therefore I
hated life; because the work that is wrought
under the sun is
grievous unto me: for all is vanity and
vexation of spirit.
So I
hated life, because the work that is done
under the sun was
grievous to me. For everything is
futile and a pursuit of the wind.
Yea, I
hated all my labour which I had taken
under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me.
I
hated all for which I had
toiled under the sun, because I must leave it to the man who comes after me.
And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a
fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise
under the sun. This is also vanity.
And who knows whether that man will be wise or
foolish? Yet he will take over all the labor at which I have worked
skillfully under the sun. This too is
futile.
Therefore I went about to cause my heart to
despair of all the labour which I took
under the sun.
So my heart began to
despair over all the labor that I had done
under the sun.
For what hath man of all his labour, and of the
vexation of his heart, wherein he hath laboured
under the sun?
For what does a man get for all the
toil and
striving with which he labors
under the sun?
To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven:
And moreover I saw under the sun the place of judgment, that wickedness was there; and the place of righteousness, that iniquity was there.
Furthermore, I saw
under the sun that in the place of judgment there is wickedness, and in the place of righteousness there is wickedness.
So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done
under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were
oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.
Again I looked, and I considered all the oppression taking place
under the sun. I saw the tears of the
oppressed, and they had no comforter; the power lay in the hands of their oppressors, and there was no comforter.
Yea, better is he than both they, which hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done
under the sun.
But better than both is he who has not yet existed, who has not seen the evil that is done under the sun.
Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun.
I considered all the living which walk
under the sun, with the second child that shall stand up in his
stead.
I saw that all who lived and walked under the sun followed this second one, the youth who succeeded the king.
There is a
sore evil which I have seen
under the sun, namely, riches kept for the owners thereof to their
hurt.
Behold that which I have seen: it is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labour that he taketh under the sun all the days of his life, which God giveth him: for it is his portion.
Here is what I have seen to be good and fitting: to eat and drink, and to find satisfaction in all the labor one does under the sun during the few days of life that God has given him—for this is his lot.
There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men:
There is another evil I have seen
under the sun, and it weighs
heavily upon mankind:
For who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?
For who knows what is good for a man during the few days in which he passes through his fleeting life like a shadow? Who can tell a man what will come after him under the sun?
I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of
foolishness and madness:
I directed my mind to
understand, to
explore, to search out wisdom and explanations, and to
understand the
stupidity of wickedness and the folly of madness.
All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done
under the sun: there is a time wherein one man ruleth over another to his own
hurt.
All this I have seen, applying my mind to every deed that is done
under the sun; there is a time when one man lords it over another to his own
detriment.
Then I
commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing
under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be
merry: for that shall
abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him
under the sun.
So I
commended the enjoyment of life, because there is nothing better for a man
under the sun than to eat and drink and be
merry. For this joy will
accompany him in his labor during the days of his life that God gives him
under the sun.
Then I
beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done
under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it;
yea further; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.
I saw every work of God, and that a man is unable to
comprehend the work that is done
under the sun.
Despite his efforts to search it out, he cannot find its meaning; even if the wise man claims to know, he is unable to
comprehend.
This is an evil among all things that are done
under the sun, that there is one event unto all:
yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.
This is an evil in everything that is done
under the sun: There is one fate for
everyone.
Furthermore, the hearts of men are full of evil and madness while they are alive, and afterward they join the dead.
Also their love, and their hatred, and their
envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done
under the sun.
Their love, their
hate, and their
envy have already
vanished, and they will never again have a share in all that is done
under the sun.
Live
joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee
under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest
under the sun.
Enjoy life with your beloved wife all the days of the fleeting life that God has given you under the sun—all your fleeting days. For this is your portion in life and in your labor under the sun.
I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.
I saw something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong; neither is the bread to the wise, nor the wealth to the intelligent, nor the favor to the skillful. For time and chance happen to all.
This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me:
I have also seen this wisdom under the sun, and it was great to me:
There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as an error which proceedeth from the ruler:
There is an evil I have seen under the sun— an error that proceeds from the ruler:
As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the
womb of her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all.
As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the bones are formed in a mother’s
womb, so you cannot
understand the work of God, the Maker of all things.
As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste.
Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest is my beloved among the young men. I delight to sit in his shade, and his fruit is sweet to my taste.
His left hand is
under my head, and his right hand
doth embrace me.
His left hand is under my head, and his right arm embraces me.
Thy lips, O my
spouse, drop as the
honeycomb: honey and milk are
under thy tongue; and the smell of thy garments is like the smell of
Lebanon.
I sleep, but my heart waketh: it is the voice of my beloved that knocketh, saying, Open to me, my sister, my love, my
dove, my
undefiled: for my head is filled with
dew, and my locks with the drops of the night.
My
dove, my
undefiled is but one; she is the only one of her mother, she is the choice one of her that bare her. The daughters saw her, and blessed her;
yea, the queens and the concubines, and they praised her.
but my
dove, my perfect one, is unique, the
favorite of the mother who bore her. The maidens see her and call her blessed; the queens and concubines sing her praises.
His left hand should be under my head, and his right hand should embrace me.
His left hand is under my head, and his right arm embraces me.
Who is this that cometh up from the wilderness,
leaning upon her beloved? I raised thee up
under the apple tree: there thy mother brought thee forth: there she brought thee forth that bare thee.
Who is this coming up from the wilderness,
leaning on her beloved? I
roused you
under the apple tree; there your mother conceived you; there she
travailed and brought you forth.
The ox knoweth his owner, and the
ass his master’s
crib: but Israel
doth not know, my people
doth not consider.
The ox knows its owner, and the
donkey its master’s
manger, but Israel does not know; My people do not
understand.”
When a man shall take hold of his brother of the house of his father, saying, Thou hast clothing, be thou our ruler, and let this ruin be under thy hand:
A man will seize his brother within his father’s house: “You have a
cloak—you be our leader! Take charge of this
heap of
rubble.”
Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge: and their honourable men are
famished, and their multitude dried up with
thirst.
And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.
And He replied: “Go and tell this people, ‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’
Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and
understand with their heart, and convert, and be
healed.
Make the hearts of this people calloused;
deafen their ears and close their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears,
understand with their hearts, and turn and be
healed.”
Without me they shall bow down under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
Nothing will remain but to
crouch among the
captives or fall among the slain.
Despite all this, His anger is not turned away; His hand is still upraised.
Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among his fat ones
leanness; and
under his glory he shall
kindle a burning like the burning of a fire.
Therefore the Lord GOD of Hosts will send a wasting disease among Assyria’s
stout warriors, and
under his
pomp will be
kindled a fire like a burning flame.
And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;
The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him— the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and strength, the Spirit of knowledge and fear of the LORD.
And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:
And He will delight in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what His eyes see, and He will not decide by what His ears hear,
Thy
pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread
under thee, and the worms cover thee.
Your
pomp has been brought down to
Sheol, along with the music of your harps. Maggots are your bed and worms your
blanket.
But thou art cast out of thy grave like an
abominable branch, and as the
raiment of those that are slain, thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a
carcase trodden under feet.
But you are cast out of your grave like a rejected branch, covered by those slain with the sword, and
dumped into a rocky pit like a
carcass trampled underfoot.
That I will break the Assyrian in my land, and upon my mountains
tread him
under foot: then shall his yoke depart from off them, and his burden depart from off their shoulders.
I will break Assyria in My land; I will
trample him on My mountain. His yoke will be taken off My people, and his burden removed from their shoulders.”
In that time shall the present be brought unto the LORD of hosts of a people scattered and
peeled, and from a people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out and
trodden under foot, whose land the rivers have
spoiled, to the place of the name of the LORD of hosts, the mount
Zion.
At that time gifts will be brought to the LORD of Hosts— from a people tall and smooth-
skinned, from a people widely feared, from a powerful nation of strange speech, whose land is divided by rivers— to Mount
Zion, the place of the Name of the LORD of Hosts.
For in this mountain shall the hand of the LORD rest, and Moab shall be
trodden down
under him, even as straw is
trodden down for the
dunghill.
For the hand of the LORD will rest on this mountain. But Moab will be
trampled in his place as straw is
trodden into the dung pile.
When the boughs thereof are
withered, they shall be broken off: the women come, and set them on fire: for it is a people of no
understanding: therefore he that made them will not have mercy on them, and he that formed them will
shew them no favour.
When its limbs are dry, they are broken off. Women come and use them for
kindling; for this is a people without
understanding. Therefore their Maker has no
compassion on them, and their
Creator shows them no favor.
The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim, shall be
trodden under feet:
Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to
understand doctrine? them that are
weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.
Whom is He trying to teach? To whom is He explaining His message? To infants just
weaned from milk? To
babies removed from the breast?
Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with
hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing
scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and
under falsehood have we
hid ourselves:
For you said, “We have made a covenant with death; we have fashioned an agreement with
Sheol. When the
overwhelming scourge passes through it will not touch us, because we have made lies our refuge and
falsehood our hiding place.”
From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a
vexation only to
understand the report.
As often as it passes through, it will carry you away; it will
sweep through morning after morning, by day and by night.” The
understanding of this message will bring sheer terror.
Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the
understanding of their
prudent men shall be
hid.
Therefore I will again
confound these people with wonder upon wonder. The wisdom of the wise will
vanish, and the intelligence of the intelligent will be hidden.”
Surely your turning of things
upside down shall be esteemed as the
potter’s clay: for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no
understanding?
You have turned things
upside down, as if the
potter were regarded as clay. Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, “He did not make me”? Can the pottery say of the
potter, “He has no
understanding”?
They also that
erred in spirit shall come to
understanding, and they that
murmured shall learn doctrine.
Then the
wayward in spirit will come to
understanding, and those who
grumble will accept instruction.”
That walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth; to
strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt!
They set out to go down to Egypt without asking My advice, to seek shelter under Pharaoh’s protection and take refuge in Egypt’s shade.
The heart also of the
rash shall
understand knowledge, and the tongue of the stammerers shall be ready to speak plainly.
Thou shalt not see a fierce people, a people of a deeper speech than thou canst perceive; of a
stammering tongue, that thou canst not
understand.
You will no longer see the
insolent, a people whose speech is unintelligible, who
stammer in a language you cannot
understand.
There shall the great
owl make her nest, and lay, and
hatch, and gather
under her shadow: there shall the vultures also be gathered, every one with her
mate.
There the
owl will make her nest; she will lay and
hatch her eggs and gather her
brood under her shadow. Even there the birds of prey will gather, each with its
mate.
Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah unto
Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, unto thy servants in the
Syrian language; for we
understand it: and speak not to us in the Jews’ language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.
Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the
Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in
Aramaic, since we
understand it. Do not speak to us in Hebrew in the hearing of the people on the wall.”
With whom took he counsel, and who
instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of
understanding?
Whom did He
consult to
enlighten Him, and who taught Him the paths of justice? Who imparted knowledge to Him and showed Him the way of
understanding?
Have ye not known? have ye not heard? hath it not been told you from the beginning? have ye not understood from the foundations of the earth?
Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been declared to you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the foundation of the earth?
Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the
everlasting God, the LORD, the
Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is
weary? there is no searching of his
understanding.
Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the
everlasting God, the
Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow
tired or
weary; His
understanding is beyond searching out.
That they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the hand of the LORD hath done this, and the Holy One of Israel hath created it.
so that all may see and know, may consider and understand, that the hand of the LORD has done this and the Holy One of Israel has created it.”
Therefore he hath poured upon him the
fury of his anger, and the strength of battle: and it hath set him on fire round about, yet he knew not; and it burned him, yet he laid it not to heart.
So He poured out on them His
furious anger and the fierceness of battle. It
enveloped them in flames, but they did not
understand; it consumed them, but they did not take it to heart.
