Judith cried with a loud voice, and said,
Wherefore thou gavest their rulers to be slain, so that they
dyed their bed in blood, being
deceived, and smotest the servants with their lords, and the lords upon their thrones;
Throw down their strength in thy power, and bring down their force in thy wrath: for they have purposed to
defile thy sanctuary, and to
pollute the tabernacle
where thy glorious name resteth and to cast down with sword the horn of thy altar.

handmaid, knowing all this, am fled from their presence; and God hath sent me to work things with thee,

token of her way to be found, but the light air being beaten with the stroke of her wings and parted with the violent noise and motion of them, is passed through, and therein afterwards no sign
where she went is to be found;
Or like as when an
arrow is shot at a mark, it parteth the air, which immediately cometh together again, so that a man cannot know

offend, and warnest them by putting them in
remembrance wherein they have
offended, that leaving their wickedness they may believe on thee, O Lord.

didst punish the enemies of thy children, and the condemned to death, with such
deliberation, giving them time and place,
