Dan went up to fight against Leshem, and took it, and
smote it
with the edge of the sword, and possessed it, and dwelt therein, and called Leshem,
Dan, after the name of
Dan their father.
(Later, when the territory of the Danites was lost to them, they went up and fought against Leshem, captured it, and put it to the sword. So they took possession of Leshem, settled there, and renamed it after their father

avenger of blood pursues him, they must not surrender the

neighbor accidentally
without prior
malice.

Shiloh in the land of
Canaan, saying, The LORD commanded by the hand of Moses to give us cities to dwell in,

But take
diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to
cleave unto him, and to serve him
with all your heart and
with all your soul.
But be very careful to observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you: to love the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, to keep His commandments, to hold fast to Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
And he spake unto them, saying, Return
with much riches unto your tents, and
with very much cattle,
with silver, and
with gold, and
with brass, and
with iron, and
with very much
raiment: divide the
spoil of your enemies
with your brethren.
saying, “Return to your homes
with your great wealth,
with immense herds of
livestock,
with silver, gold, bronze, iron, and very many clothes. Divide
with your brothers the
spoil of your enemies.”
And with him ten princes, of each chief house a prince throughout all the tribes of Israel; and each one was an head of the house of their fathers among the thousands of Israel.
With him they sent ten chiefs—one family leader from each tribe of Israel, each the head of a family among the clans of Israel.
And they came unto the children of
Reuben, and to the children of
Gad, and to the half tribe of
Manasseh, unto the land of
Gilead, and they spake
with them, saying,
They went to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh in the land of
Gilead and said to them,
But that ye must turn away this day from following the LORD? and it will be, seeing ye
rebel to day against the LORD, that to
morrow he will be
wroth with the whole congregation of Israel.
And now, would you turn away from the LORD? If you
rebel today against the LORD,
tomorrow He will be
angry with the whole congregation of Israel.
And if we have not rather done it for fear of this thing, saying, In time to come your children might speak unto our children, saying, What have ye to do with the LORD God of Israel?
But in fact we have done this for fear that in the future your descendants might say to ours, ‘What have you to do with the LORD, the God of Israel?
But that it may be a witness between us, and you, and our generations after us, that we might do the service of the LORD before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the LORD.
Rather, let it be a witness between us and you and the generations to come, that we will worship the LORD in His presence with our burnt offerings, sacrifices, and peace offerings.’ Then in the future, your descendants cannot say to ours, ‘You have no share in the LORD!’
And when
Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation and heads of the thousands of Israel which were
with him, heard the words that the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad and the children of
Manasseh spake, it pleased them.
When
Phinehas the priest and the chiefs of the congregation—the heads of Israel’s clans who were
with him—heard what the descendants of
Reuben,
Gad, and
Manasseh had to say, they were satisfied.
And
Phinehas the son of
Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of
Reuben, and from the children of
Gad, out of the land of
Gilead, unto the land of
Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again.
Then
Phinehas son of
Eleazar the priest, together
with the other leaders, returned to the Israelites in the land of
Canaan and brought back a report regarding the Reubenites and Gadites in the land of
Gilead.
And the thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and did not intend to go up against them in battle, to destroy the land wherein the children of
Reuben and
Gad dwelt.
The Israelites were satisfied with the report, and they blessed God and spoke no more about going to war against them to destroy the land where the Reubenites and Gadites lived.
Behold, I have divided unto you by lot these nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, even unto the great sea westward.
See, I have
allotted as an inheritance to your tribes these remaining nations, including all the nations I have already cut off, from the Jordan westward to the Great Sea.
That ye come not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the names of their gods, nor cause to
swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow
yourselves unto them:
So you are not to associate
with these nations that remain among you. You must not call on the names of their gods or
swear by them, and you must not serve them or bow down to them.
Else if ye do in any wise go back, and
cleave unto the
remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and shall make marriages
with them, and go in unto them, and they to you:
For if you turn away and
cling to the rest of these nations that remain among you, and if you
intermarry and associate
with them,
And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof.
Now behold,
today I am going the way of all the earth, and you know
with all your heart and soul that not one of the good promises the LORD your God made to you has failed. Everything was fulfilled for you; not one promise has failed.
And I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and ye came unto the sea; and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers
with chariots and
horsemen unto the Red sea.
When I brought your fathers out of Egypt and you reached the Red Sea, the Egyptians pursued them
with chariots and
horsemen as far as the Red Sea.
And I brought you into the land of the
Amorites, which dwelt on the other side Jordan; and they fought
with you: and I gave them into your hand, that ye might possess their land; and I destroyed them from before you.
Later, I brought you to the land of the
Amorites who lived beyond the Jordan. They fought against you, but I delivered them into your hand, that you should possess their land when I destroyed them before you.
And I sent the
hornet before you, which
drave them out from before you, even the two kings of the
Amorites; but not
with thy sword, nor
with thy bow.
I sent the
hornet ahead of you, and it drove out the two Amorite kings before you, but not by your own sword or bow.
So Joshua made a covenant
with the people that day, and set them a statute and an
ordinance in
Shechem.
On that day Joshua made a covenant for the people, and there at
Shechem he established for them a statute and
ordinance.
And Judah said unto
Simeon his brother, Come up
with me into my lot, that we may fight against the
Canaanites; and I likewise will go
with thee into thy lot. So
Simeon went
with him.
Then the men of Judah said to their brothers the Simeonites, “Come up
with us to our
allotted territory, and let us fight against the
Canaanites. And we likewise will go
with you to your territory.” So the Simeonites went
with them.
And Adoni-bezek said,
Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.
Then Adoni-bezek said, “Seventy kings
with their thumbs and
big toes cut off have gathered the scraps under my table. As I have done to them, so God has repaid me.” And they brought him to Jerusalem, where he died.
Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and
smitten it
with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.
Then the men of Judah fought against Jerusalem and captured it. They put the city to the sword and set it on fire.
And the children of the Kenite, Moses’ father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees
with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of
Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.
Now the descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, the Kenite, went up
with the men of Judah from the City of Palms to the Wilderness of Judah in the Negev near
Arad. They went to live among the people.
And Judah went
with Simeon his brother, and they
slew the
Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.
Then the men of Judah went
with their brothers the Simeonites, attacked the
Canaanites living in Zephath, and devoted the city to destruction. So it was called Hormah.
Also Judah took
Gaza with the coast thereof, and
Askelon with the coast thereof, and
Ekron with the coast thereof.
And Judah also captured
Gaza, Ashkelon, and
Ekron—each
with its territory.
And the LORD was
with Judah; and he
drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had
chariots of iron.
The LORD was
with Judah, and they took possession of the hill country; but they could not drive out the inhabitants of the plains because they had
chariots of iron.
And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.
The Benjamites, however, failed to drive out the Jebusites living in Jerusalem. So to this day the Jebusites live there among the Benjamites.
And the house of Joseph, they also went up against
Bethel: and the LORD was
with them.
The house of Joseph also attacked
Bethel, and the LORD was
with them.
And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they
smote the city
with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.
So the man showed them the entrance to the city, and they put the city to the sword but released that man and all his family.
And an angel of the LORD came up from
Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I
sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant
with you.
Now the angel of the LORD went up from
Gilgal to Bochim and said, “I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land that I had promised to your fathers, and I said, ‘I will never break My covenant
with you,
And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this?
and you are not to make a covenant
with the people of this land, but you shall
tear down their altars.’ Yet you have not obeyed My voice. What is this you have done?
And yet they would not
hearken unto their judges, but they went a
whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the LORD; but they did not so.
Israel, however, did not
listen to their judges. Instead, they
prostituted themselves
with other gods and bowed down to them. They quickly turned from the way of their fathers, who had walked in obedience to the LORD’s commandments; they did not do as their fathers had done.
And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was
with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it
repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that
oppressed them and
vexed them.
Whenever the LORD raised up a judge for the Israelites, He was
with that judge and saved them from the hands of their enemies while the judge was still alive; for the LORD was moved to
pity by their
groaning under those who
oppressed them and
afflicted them.
Therefore the LORD left those nations,
without driving them out
hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.
That is why the LORD had left those nations in place and had not driven them out immediately by delivering them into the hand of Joshua.
And he gathered unto him the children of
Ammon and Amalek, and went and
smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.
But when the children of Israel
cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of
Gera, a
Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto
Eglon the king of Moab.
And again they
cried out to the LORD, and He raised up Ehud son of
Gera, a left-handed
Benjamite, as their deliverer. So they sent him
with tribute to
Eglon king of Moab.
And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the
dagger from his right
thigh, and thrust it into his
belly:
And Ehud reached
with his left hand, pulled the sword from his right
thigh, and
plunged it into
Eglon’s
belly.
And the
haft also went in after the
blade; and the fat closed upon the
blade, so that he could not draw the
dagger out of his
belly; and the
dirt came out.
And it came to pass, when he was come, that he
blew a
trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down
with him from the mount, and he before them.
On arriving in Seirah, he
blew the ram’s horn throughout the hill country of Ephraim. The Israelites came down
with him from the hills, and he became their leader.
And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which
slew of the Philistines six hundred men
with an ox
goad: and he also delivered Israel.
After Ehud came Shamgar son of Anath. And he too saved Israel, striking down six hundred Philistines
with an
oxgoad.
And she sent and called
Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedesh-
naphtali, and said unto him, Hath not the LORD God of Israel commanded, saying, Go and draw toward mount
Tabor, and take
with thee ten thousand men of the children of
Naphtali and of the children of
Zebulun?
She summoned
Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh in
Naphtali and said to him, “Surely the LORD, the God of Israel, is commanding you: ‘Go and march to Mount
Tabor, taking
with you ten thousand men of
Naphtali and
Zebulun.
And I will draw unto thee to the river
Kishon Sisera, the captain of Jabin’s army,
with his
chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver him into thine hand.
And I will draw out Sisera the commander of Jabin’s army, his
chariots, and his troops to the River
Kishon, and I will deliver him into your hand.’”
And
Barak said unto her, If thou
wilt go
with me, then I will go: but if thou
wilt not go
with me, then I will not go.
Barak said to her, “If you will go
with me, I will go; but if you will not go
with me, I will not go.”
And she said, I will surely go
with thee: notwithstanding the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honour; for the LORD shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And
Deborah arose, and went
with Barak to Kedesh.
“I will certainly go
with you,”
Deborah replied, “but the road you are taking will bring you no honor, because the LORD will be selling Sisera into the hand of a woman.” So
Deborah got up and went
with Barak to Kedesh,
And Sisera gathered together all his
chariots, even nine hundred
chariots of iron, and all the people that were
with him, from
Harosheth of the Gentiles unto the river of
Kishon.
he summoned all nine hundred of his iron
chariots and all the men
with him, from
Harosheth-hagoyim to the River
Kishon.
And
Deborah said unto
Barak, Up; for this is the day in which the LORD hath delivered Sisera into thine hand: is not the LORD gone out before thee? So
Barak went down from mount
Tabor, and ten thousand men after him.
Then
Deborah said to
Barak, “Arise, for this is the day that the LORD has delivered Sisera into your hand. Has not the LORD gone before you?” So
Barak came down from Mount
Tabor with ten thousand men following him.
And the LORD
discomfited Sisera, and all his
chariots, and all his host,
with the edge of the sword before
Barak; so that Sisera lighted down off his
chariot, and fled away on his feet.
And in front of him the LORD routed
with the sword Sisera, all his charioteers, and all his army. Sisera abandoned his
chariot and fled on foot.
And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said unto him, Turn in, my lord, turn in to me; fear not. And when he had turned in unto her into the tent, she covered him
with a
mantle.
Jael went out to
greet Sisera and said to him, “Come in, my lord. Come in
with me. Do not be afraid.” So he entered her tent, and she covered him
with a
blanket.
And, behold, as
Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said unto him, Come, and I will
shew thee the man whom thou seekest. And when he came into her tent, behold, Sisera lay dead, and the
nail was in his temples.
When
Barak arrived in pursuit of Sisera, Jael went out to
greet him and said to him, “Come, and I will show you the man you are seeking.” So he went in
with her, and there lay Sisera dead,
with a tent
peg through his temple.
My heart is toward the governors of Israel, that offered themselves willingly among the people.
Bless ye the LORD.
My heart is
with the princes of Israel,
with the
volunteers among the people.
Bless the LORD!
Out of Ephraim was there a root of them against Amalek; after thee, Benjamin, among thy people; out of Machir came down governors, and out of
Zebulun they that handle the pen of the writer.
Some came from Ephraim,
with their roots in Amalek; Benjamin came
with your people after you. The commanders came down from Machir, the bearers of the marshal’s staff from
Zebulun.
And the princes of
Issachar were
with Deborah; even
Issachar, and also
Barak: he was sent on foot into the valley. For the divisions of
Reuben there were great thoughts of heart.
She put her hand to the
nail, and her right hand to the workmen’s hammer; and
with the hammer she
smote Sisera, she
smote off his head, when she had pierced and
stricken through his temples.
She reached for the tent
peg, her right hand for the
workman’s hammer. She struck Sisera and
crushed his skull; she
shattered and pierced his temple.
And they
encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto
Gaza, and left no
sustenance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor
ass.
encamping against them as far as
Gaza and destroying the produce of the land. They left Israel
with no
sustenance, neither sheep nor oxen nor
donkeys.
For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; for both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it.
For the Midianites came
with their
livestock and their tents like a great
swarm of locusts. They and their camels were innumerable, and they entered the land to
ravage it.
And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.
And the angel of the LORD appeared to
Gideon and said, “The LORD is
with you, O mighty man of
valor.”
And
Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be
with us, why then is all this
befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath
forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.
“Please, my Lord,”
Gideon replied, “if the LORD is
with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all His wonders of which our fathers told us, saying, ‘Has not the LORD brought us up out of Egypt?’ But now the LORD has
forsaken us and delivered us into the hand of
Midian.”
And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be
with thee, and thou shalt
smite the Midianites as one man.
“Surely I will be with you,” the LORD replied, “and you will strike down all the Midianites as one man.”
And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then
shew me a sign that thou talkest
with me.
Gideon answered, “If I have found favor in Your sight, give me a sign that it is You speaking
with me.
And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.
But the LORD said to him, “Peace be with you. Do not be afraid, for you will not die.”
