And build an altar unto the LORD thy God upon the top of this rock, in the ordered place, and take the second
bullock, and offer a burnt sacrifice
with the wood of the
grove which thou shalt cut down.
Then build a proper altar to the LORD your God on the top of this
stronghold. And
with the wood of the Asherah pole you cut down, take the second bull and offer it as a burnt offering.”
And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of
Baal was cast down, and the
grove was cut down that was by it, and the second
bullock was offered upon the altar that was built.
When the men of the city got up in the morning, there was
Baal’s altar
torn down,
with the Asherah pole cut down beside it and the second bull offered up on the newly built altar.
And
Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye
plead for
Baal? will ye save him? he that will
plead for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a god, let him
plead for himself, because one hath cast down his altar.
But
Joash said to all who stood against him, “Are you
contending for
Baal? Are you trying to save him?
Whoever pleads his case will be put to death by morning! If
Baal is a god, let him
contend for himself
with the one who has
torn down his altar.”
Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let
Baal plead against him, because he hath thrown down his altar.
So on that day
Gideon was called Jerubbaal, that is to say, “Let
Baal contend with him,” because he had
torn down
Baal’s altar.
And
Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once
with the
fleece; let it now be dry only upon the
fleece, and upon all the ground let there be
dew.
Then
Gideon said to God, “Do not be
angry with me; let me speak one more time. Please allow me one more test
with the
fleece. This time let it be dry, and the ground covered
with dew.”
Then Jerubbaal, who is
Gideon, and all the people that were
with him, rose up early, and pitched beside the well of Harod: so that the host of the Midianites were on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.
Early in the morning Jerubbaal (that is,
Gideon) and all the men
with him camped beside the spring of Harod. And the camp of
Midian was north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh.
And the LORD said unto
Gideon, The people that are
with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel
vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me.
Then the LORD said to
Gideon, “You have too many people for Me to deliver
Midian into their hands, lest Israel
glorify themselves over Me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’
And the LORD said unto
Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee, This shall go
with thee, the same shall go
with thee; and of
whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go
with thee, the same shall not go.
Then the LORD said to
Gideon, “There are still too many people. Take them down to the water, and I will
sift them for you there. If I say to you, ‘This one shall go
with you,’ he shall go. But if I say, ‘This one shall not go
with you,’ he shall not go.”
So he brought down the people unto the water: and the LORD said unto
Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water
with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink.
So
Gideon brought the people down to the water, and the LORD said to him, “Separate those who
lap the water
with their tongues like a dog from those who
kneel to drink.”
And the number of them that
lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, were three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water.
And the number of those who
lapped the water
with their hands to their mouths was three hundred men; all the others
knelt to drink.
And the LORD said unto
Gideon, By the three hundred men that
lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place.
Then the LORD said to
Gideon, “
With the three hundred men who
lapped the water I will save you and deliver the Midianites into your hand. But all the others are to go home.”
But if thou fear to go down, go thou with Phurah thy servant down to the host:
But if you are afraid to do so, then go down to the camp with your servant Purah
And thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thine hands be strengthened to go down unto the host. Then went he down with Phurah his servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the host.
and
listen to what they are saying. Then your hands will be strengthened to attack the camp.” So he went
with Purah his servant to the outposts where armed men were guarding the camp.
And the Midianites and the
Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels were
without number, as the sand by the sea side for multitude.
Now the Midianites,
Amalekites, and all the other people of the east had settled in the valley like a
swarm of locusts, and their camels were as countless as the sand on the
seashore.
And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a
trumpet in every man’s hand,
with empty pitchers, and lamps
within the pitchers.
And he divided the three hundred men into three companies and gave each man a ram’s horn in one hand and a large
jar in the other, containing a
torch.
When I blow
with a
trumpet, I and all that are
with me, then blow ye the
trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, The sword of the LORD, and of
Gideon.
When I and all who are
with me blow our horns, then you are also to blow your horns from all around the camp and
shout, ‘For the LORD and for
Gideon!’”
So
Gideon, and the hundred men that were
with him, came unto the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch: and they
blew the
trumpets, and
brake the pitchers that were in their hands.
Gideon and the hundred men
with him reached the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after the changing of the guard. They
blew their horns and broke the jars that were in their hands.
And the three companies
blew the
trumpets, and
brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the
trumpets in their right hands to blow
withal: and they
cried, The sword of the LORD, and of
Gideon.
The three companies
blew their horns and
shattered their jars. Holding the torches in their left hands and the horns in their right hands, they
shouted, “A sword for the LORD and for
Gideon!”
And the three hundred
blew the
trumpets, and the LORD set every man’s sword against his fellow, even throughout all the host: and the host fled to Beth-
shittah in Zererath, and to the border of
Abel-meholah, unto Tabbath.
And when the three hundred rams’ horns sounded, the LORD set all the men in the camp against one another
with their swords. The army fled to Beth-
shittah toward Zererah as far as the border of
Abel-meholah near Tabbath.
And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight
with the Midianites? And they did
chide with him sharply.
Then the men of Ephraim said to
Gideon, “Why have you done this to us? Why did you fail to call us when you went to fight against
Midian?” And they
contended with him violently.
And
Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were
with him,
faint, yet pursuing them.
Then
Gideon and his three hundred men came to the Jordan and crossed it, exhausted yet still in pursuit.
And
Gideon said, Therefore when the LORD hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, then I will
tear your flesh
with the thorns of the wilderness and
with briers.
“Very well,”
Gideon replied, “when the LORD has delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, I will
tear your flesh
with the thorns and briers of the wilderness!”
Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.
Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor
with their army of about fifteen thousand men—all that were left of the armies of the people of the east. A hundred and twenty thousand
swordsmen had already fallen.
And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna,
with whom ye did
upbraid me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are
weary?
And
Gideon went to the men of Succoth and said, “Here are Zebah and Zalmunna, about whom you
taunted me, saying, ‘Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your possession, that we should give bread to your
weary men?’”
And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.
Then he took the elders of the city, and using the thorns and briers of the wilderness, he disciplined the men of Succoth.
And it came to pass, as soon as
Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a
whoring after
Baalim, and made
Baal-berith their god.
And as soon as
Gideon was dead, the Israelites turned and
prostituted themselves
with the Baals, and they set up
Baal-berith as their god.
And
Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to
Shechem unto his mother’s brethren, and communed
with them, and
with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying,
Now
Abimelech son of Jerubbaal went to his mother’s brothers at
Shechem and said to them and to all the clan of his mother,
So they gave him seventy shekels of silver from the temple of
Baal-berith,
with which
Abimelech hired some worthless and
reckless men to follow him.
Now therefore, if ye have done truly and
sincerely, in that ye have made
Abimelech king, and if ye have dealt well
with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done unto him according to the deserving of his hands;
Now if you have acted faithfully and
honestly in making
Abimelech king, if you have done well by Jerubbaal and his family, and if you have done to him as he deserves—
if you have acted faithfully and
honestly toward Jerubbaal and his house this day, then may you
rejoice in
Abimelech, and he in you.
And Gaal the son of Ebed came
with his brethren, and went over to
Shechem: and the men of
Shechem put their confidence in him.
Meanwhile, Gaal son of Ebed came
with his brothers and crossed into
Shechem, and the leaders of
Shechem put their confidence in him.
And when Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was
kindled.
When Zebul the governor of the city heard the words of Gaal son of Ebed, he burned with anger.
Now therefore up by night, thou and the people that is with thee, and lie in wait in the field:
Now then,
tonight you and the people
with you are to come and lie in wait in the fields.
And it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, thou shalt rise early, and set upon the city: and, behold, when he and the people that is with him come out against thee, then mayest thou do to them as thou shalt find occasion.
And in the morning at
sunrise, get up and advance against the city. When Gaal and his men come out against you, do to them whatever you are able.”
And
Abimelech rose up, and all the people that were
with him, by night, and they laid wait against
Shechem in four companies.
So
Abimelech and all his troops set out by night and lay in wait against
Shechem in four companies.
And Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and
Abimelech rose up, and the people that were
with him, from lying in wait.
Now Gaal son of Ebed went out and stood at the entrance of the city gate just as
Abimelech and his men came out from their hiding places.
Then said Zebul unto him, Where is now thy mouth,
wherewith thou saidst, Who is
Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that thou hast
despised? go out, I pray now, and fight
with them.
“Where is your
gloating now?” Zebul replied. “You said, ‘Who is
Abimelech that we should serve him?’ Are these not the people you
ridiculed? Go out now and fight them!”
And
Abimelech, and the company that was
with him,
rushed forward, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and the two other companies ran upon all the people that were in the fields, and
slew them.
Then
Abimelech and the companies
with him
rushed forward and took their stand at the entrance of the city gate. The other two companies
rushed against all who were in the fields and struck them down.
And
Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and
slew the people that was therein, and beat down the city, and
sowed it
with salt.
And all that day
Abimelech fought against the city until he had captured it and killed its people. Then he
demolished the city and
sowed it
with salt.
And
Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were
with him; and
Abimelech took an
axe in his hand, and cut down a
bough from the trees, and took it, and laid it on his shoulder, and said unto the people that were
with him, What ye have seen me do, make
haste, and do as I have done.
he and all his men went up to Mount Zalmon.
Abimelech took his
axe in his hand and cut a branch from the trees, which he lifted to his shoulder, saying to his men, “
Hurry and do what you have seen me do.”
But there was a strong tower
within the city, and thither fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut it to them, and
gat them up to the top of the tower.
But there was a strong tower inside the city, and all the men, women, and leaders of the city fled there. They locked themselves in and went up to the roof of the tower.
And
Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and went hard unto the door of the tower to burn it
with fire.
When
Abimelech came to attack the tower, he approached its entrance to set it on fire.
And the children of Israel said unto the LORD, We have
sinned: do thou unto us
whatsoever seemeth good unto thee; deliver us only, we pray thee, this day.
“We have
sinned,” the Israelites said to the LORD. “Deal
with us as You see fit; but please deliver us
today!”
Then
Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of
Tob: and there were gathered vain men to
Jephthah, and went out
with him.
So
Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of
Tob, where worthless men gathered around him and traveled
with him.
And it was so, that when the children of
Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of
Gilead went to
fetch Jephthah out of the land of
Tob:
and made war
with them, the elders of
Gilead went to get
Jephthah from the land of
Tob.
And they said unto
Jephthah, Come, and be our captain, that we may fight
with the children of
Ammon.
“Come,” they said, “be our commander, so that we can fight against the
Ammonites.”
And the elders of
Gilead said unto
Jephthah, Therefore we turn again to thee now, that thou mayest go
with us, and fight against the children of
Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of
Gilead.
They answered
Jephthah, “This is why we now turn to you, that you may go
with us, fight the
Ammonites, and become leader over all of us who live in
Gilead.”
Then
Jephthah went
with the elders of
Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them: and
Jephthah uttered all his words before the LORD in Mizpeh.
So
Jephthah went
with the elders of
Gilead, and the people made him their leader and commander. And
Jephthah repeated all his terms in the presence of the LORD at
Mizpah.
And
Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of
Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do
with me, that thou art come against me to fight in my land?
Then
Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the
Ammonites, saying, “What do you have against me that you have come to fight against my land?”
Then they went along through the wilderness, and compassed the land of
Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other side of
Arnon, but came not
within the border of Moab: for
Arnon was the border of Moab.
Then Israel traveled through the wilderness and bypassed the lands of
Edom and Moab. They came to the east side of the land of Moab and camped on the other side of the
Arnon. But they did not enter the territory of Moab, since the
Arnon was its border.
But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
But Sihon would not trust Israel to pass through his territory. So he gathered all his people,
encamped in Jahaz, and fought
with Israel.
And now art thou any thing better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever
strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them,
Are you now so much better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever
contend with Israel or fight against them?
While Israel dwelt in
Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in all the cities that be along by the coasts of
Arnon, three hundred years? why therefore did ye not recover them
within that time?
For three hundred years Israel has lived in
Heshbon, Aroer, and their villages, as well as all the cities along the banks of the
Arnon. Why did you not take them back during that time?
And
Jephthah vowed a
vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou shalt
without fail deliver the children of
Ammon into mine hands,
And he
smote them from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards,
with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of
Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.
With a great blow he
devastated twenty cities from Aroer to the vicinity of Minnith, as far as
Abel-keramim. So the
Ammonites were subdued before the Israelites.
And
Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him
with timbrels and
with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.
And when
Jephthah returned home to
Mizpah, there was his daughter coming out to meet him
with tambourines and dancing! She was his only child; he had no son or daughter besides her.
And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and
bewail my
virginity, I and my fellows.
She also said to her father, “Let me do this one thing: Let me
wander for two months through the mountains
with my friends and
mourn my
virginity.”
And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went
with her companions, and
bewailed her
virginity upon the mountains.
“Go,” he said. And he sent her away for two months. So she left
with her friends and
mourned her
virginity upon the mountains.
And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did
with her according to his
vow which he had
vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel,
After two months, she returned to her father, and he did to her as he had
vowed. And she had never had relations
with a man. So it has become a custom in Israel
And the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and went northward, and said unto
Jephthah, Wherefore passedst thou over to fight against the children of
Ammon, and
didst not call us to go
with thee? we will burn thine house upon thee
with fire.
Then the men of Ephraim assembled and crossed the Jordan to Zaphon. They said to
Jephthah, “Why have you crossed over to fight the
Ammonites without calling us to go
with you? We will burn your house down
with you inside!”
And
Jephthah said unto them, I and my people were at great
strife with the children of
Ammon; and when I called you, ye delivered me not out of their hands.
But
Jephthah replied, “My people and I had a serious conflict
with the
Ammonites, and when I called, you did not save me out of their hands.
Then
Jephthah gathered together all the men of
Gilead, and fought
with Ephraim: and the men of
Gilead smote Ephraim, because they said, Ye Gileadites are fugitives of Ephraim among the Ephraimites, and among the Manassites.
Jephthah then gathered all the men of
Gilead and fought against Ephraim. And the men of
Gilead struck them down because the Ephraimites had said, “You Gileadites are fugitives in Ephraim, living in the territories of Ephraim and
Manasseh.”
And God
hearkened to the voice of
Manoah; and the angel of God came again unto the woman as she sat in the field: but
Manoah her husband was not
with her.
And God
listened to the voice of
Manoah, and the angel of God returned to the woman as she was sitting in the field; but her husband
Manoah was not
with her.
So
Manoah took a
kid with a meat offering, and offered it upon a rock unto the LORD: and the angel did wonderously; and
Manoah and his wife looked on.
Then
Manoah took a young goat and a grain offering and offered them on a rock to the LORD. And as
Manoah and his wife looked on, the LORD did a
marvelous thing.
Then went
Samson down, and his father and his mother, to Timnath, and came to the vineyards of Timnath: and, behold, a young lion
roared against him.
Then
Samson went down to Timnah
with his father and mother and came to the vineyards of Timnah. Suddenly a young lion came
roaring at him,
And the Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a
kid, and he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.
and the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon him, and he
tore the lion apart
with his bare hands as one would
tear a young goat. But he did not tell his father or mother what he had done.
And he went down, and talked
with the woman; and she pleased
Samson well.
Then
Samson continued on his way down and spoke to the woman, because she was pleasing to his eyes.
And after a time he returned to take her, and he turned aside to see the
carcase of the lion: and, behold, there was a
swarm of bees and honey in the
carcase of the lion.
When
Samson returned later to take her, he left the road to see the lion’s
carcass, and in it was a
swarm of bees, along
with their honey.
And it came to pass, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions to be with him.
And when the Philistines saw him, they selected thirty men to
accompany him.
And
Samson said unto them, I will now put forth a
riddle unto you: if ye can certainly declare it me
within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty sheets and thirty change of garments:
“Let me tell you a
riddle,”
Samson said to them. “If you can
solve it for me
within the seven days of the feast, I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothes.
And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they said unto
Samson’s wife,
Entice thy husband, that he may declare unto us the
riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father’s house
with fire: have ye called us to take that we have? is it not so?
So on the fourth day they said to
Samson’s wife, “
Entice your husband to explain the
riddle to us, or we will burn you and your father’s household to death. Did you
invite us here to
rob us?”
And the men of the city said unto him on the seventh day before the sun went down, What is sweeter than honey? and what is stronger than a lion? And he said unto them, If ye had not
plowed with my
heifer, ye had not found out my
riddle.
Before
sunset on the seventh day, the men of the city said to
Samson: “What is sweeter than honey? And what is stronger than a lion?” So he said to them: “If you had not
plowed with my
heifer, you would not have
solved my
riddle!”
And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and
slew thirty men of them, and took their
spoil, and gave change of garments unto them which
expounded the
riddle. And his anger was
kindled, and he went up to his father’s house.
Then the Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, killed thirty of their men, took their
apparel, and gave their clothes to those who had
solved the
riddle. And burning
with anger,
Samson returned to his father’s house,
But it came to pass
within a while after, in the time of wheat harvest, that
Samson visited his wife
with a
kid; and he said, I will go in to my wife into the chamber. But her father would not suffer him to go in.
Later on, at the time of the wheat harvest,
Samson took a young goat and went to visit his wife. “I want to go to my wife in her room,” he said. But her father would not let him enter.
And when he had set the brands on fire, he let them go into the standing corn of the Philistines, and burnt up both the shocks, and also the standing corn, with the vineyards and olives.
Then he
lit the torches and released the foxes into the standing grain of the Philistines, burning up the piles of grain and the standing grain, as well as the vineyards and olive groves.
Then the Philistines said, Who hath done this? And they answered,
Samson, the son in law of the Timnite, because he had taken his wife, and given her to his companion. And the Philistines came up, and burnt her and her father
with fire.
“Who did this?” the Philistines demanded. “It was
Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite,” they were told. “For his wife was given to his companion.” So the Philistines went up and burned her and her father to death.
And he
smote them
hip and
thigh with a great slaughter: and he went down and dwelt in the top of the rock Etam.
And he struck them
ruthlessly with a great slaughter, and then went down and stayed in the cave at the rock of Etam.
And they spake unto him, saying, No; but we will bind thee fast, and deliver thee into their hand: but surely we will not kill thee. And they bound him with two new cords, and brought him up from the rock.
“No,” they answered, “we will not kill you, but we will
tie you up securely and hand you over to them.” So they bound him
with two new ropes and led him up from the rock.
And when he came unto Lehi, the Philistines
shouted against him: and the Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt
with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands.
When
Samson arrived in Lehi, the Philistines came out
shouting against him. And the Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him. The ropes on his arms became like burnt flax, and the bonds broke loose from his hands.
And
Samson said,
With the
jawbone of an
ass, heaps upon heaps,
with the jaw of an
ass have I slain a thousand men.
And
Samson lay till
midnight, and arose at
midnight, and took the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and went away
with them, bar and all, and put them upon his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of an hill that is before
Hebron.
But
Samson lay there only until
midnight, when he got up, took hold of the doors of the city gate and both gateposts, and pulled them out, bar and all. Then he put them on his shoulders and took them to the top of the mountain overlooking
Hebron.
And it came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was
Delilah.
Some time later,
Samson fell in love
with a woman in the Valley of Sorek, whose name was
Delilah.
And
Samson said unto her, If they bind me
with seven green
withs that were never dried, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.
Samson told her, “If they
tie me up
with seven fresh bowstrings that have not been dried, I will become as weak as any other man.”
Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green withs which had not been dried, and she bound him with them.
So the lords of the Philistines brought her seven fresh bowstrings that had not been dried, and she
tied him up
with them.
Now there were men lying in wait,
abiding with her in the chamber. And she said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And he
brake the
withs, as a thread of
tow is broken when it toucheth the fire. So his strength was not known.
While the men were hidden in her room, she called out, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” But he
snapped the bowstrings like a
strand of yarn
seared by a flame. So the source of his strength remained unknown.
And he said unto her, If they bind me fast with new ropes that never were occupied, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.
He replied, “If they
tie me up
with new ropes that have never been used, I will become as weak as any other man.”
Delilah therefore took new ropes, and bound him
therewith, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And there were liers in wait
abiding in the chamber. And he
brake them from off his arms like a thread.
So
Delilah took new ropes,
tied him up
with them, and called out, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” But while the men were hidden in her room, he
snapped the ropes off his arms like they were threads.
And
Delilah said unto
Samson, Hitherto thou hast
mocked me, and told me lies: tell me
wherewith thou mightest be bound. And he said unto her, If thou weavest the seven locks of my head
with the web.
Then
Delilah said to
Samson, “You have
mocked me and
lied to me all along! Tell me how you can be
tied up.” He told her, “If you
weave the seven braids of my head into the web of a
loom and
tighten it
with a pin, I will become as weak as any other man.”
And she fastened it
with the pin, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And he
awaked out of his sleep, and went away
with the pin of the beam, and
with the web.
So while he
slept,
Delilah took the seven braids of his hair and
wove them into the web. Then she
tightened it
with a pin and called to him, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” But he
awoke from his sleep and pulled out the pin
with the
loom and the web.
And she said unto him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thine heart is not
with me? thou hast
mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth.
“How can you say, ‘I love you,’” she asked, “when your heart is not
with me? This is the third time you have
mocked me and failed to
reveal to me the source of your great strength!”
And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily
with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was
vexed unto death;
Finally, after she had pressed him daily
with her words and
pleaded until he was sick to death,
But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to
Gaza, and bound him
with fetters of brass; and he did
grind in the prison house.
Then the Philistines seized him,
gouged out his eyes, and brought him down to
Gaza, where he was bound
with bronze
shackles and forced to
grind grain in the prison.
And
Samson called unto the LORD, and said, O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray thee, and
strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once
avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.
Then
Samson called out to the LORD: “O Lord GOD, please remember me.
Strengthen me, O God, just once more, so that
with one
vengeful blow I may pay back the Philistines for my two eyes.”
And
Samson took hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house stood, and on which it was borne up, of the one
with his right hand, and of the other
with his left.
And
Samson reached out for the two central pillars supporting the temple.
Bracing himself against them
with his right hand on one
pillar and his left hand on the other,
And
Samson said, Let me die
with the Philistines. And he bowed himself
with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead which he
slew at his death were more than they which he
slew in his life.
Samson said, “Let me die
with the Philistines.” Then he pushed
with all his might, and the temple fell on the lords and all the people in it. So in his death he killed more than he had killed in his life.
And he said unto his mother, The eleven hundred shekels of silver that were taken from thee, about which thou cursedst, and spakest of also in mine ears, behold, the silver is with me; I took it. And his mother said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my son.
said to his mother, “The eleven hundred shekels of silver that were taken from you and about which I heard you utter a
curse—I have the silver here
with me; I took it.” Then his mother said, “Blessed be my son by the LORD!”
And there was a young man out of Bethlehemjudah of the family of Judah, who was a
Levite, and he
sojourned there.
And there was a young
Levite from
Bethlehem in Judah who had been residing
within the clan of Judah.
