And Menahem exacted the money of Israel, even of all the mighty men of wealth, of each man fifty shekels of silver, to give to the king of Assyria. So the king of Assyria turned back, and stayed not there in the land.
Menahem exacted this money from each of the wealthy men of Israel—fifty shekels of silver from each man—to give to the king of Assyria. So the king of Assyria withdrew and did not remain in the land.
And the rest of the acts of Menahem, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
As for the rest of the acts of Menahem, along with all his accomplishments, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?
And Menahem
slept with his fathers; and Pekahiah his son reigned in his
stead.
And Menahem rested with his fathers, and his son Pekahiah reigned in his place.
But Pekah the son of Remaliah, a captain of his,
conspired against him, and
smote him in Samaria, in the palace of the king’s house,
with Argob and Arieh, and
with him fifty men of the Gileadites: and he killed him, and reigned in his room.
Then his officer, Pekah son of Remaliah,
conspired against him along
with Argob, Arieh, and fifty men of
Gilead. And at the citadel of the king’s palace in Samaria, Pekah struck down and killed Pekahiah and reigned in his place.
And the rest of the acts of Pekahiah, and all that he did, behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.
As for the rest of the acts of Pekahiah, along with all his accomplishments, they are indeed written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.
And the rest of the acts of Pekah, and all that he did, behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.
As for the rest of the acts of Pekah, along with all his accomplishments, they are indeed written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.
Now the rest of the acts of Jotham, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
As for the rest of the acts of Jotham, along with his accomplishments, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?
And Jotham
slept with his fathers, and was buried
with his fathers in the city of David his father: and
Ahaz his son reigned in his
stead.
And Jotham rested
with his fathers and was buried
with them in the City of David his father. And his son
Ahaz reigned in his place.
And king
Ahaz commanded Urijah the priest, saying, Upon the great altar burn the morning burnt offering, and the evening meat offering, and the king’s burnt sacrifice, and his meat offering,
with the burnt offering of all the people of the land, and their meat offering, and their drink offerings; and
sprinkle upon it all the blood of the burnt offering, and all the blood of the sacrifice: and the
brasen altar shall be for me to
enquire by.
Then King
Ahaz commanded Uriah the priest, “Offer on the great altar the morning burnt offering, the evening grain offering, and the king’s burnt offering and grain offering, as well as the burnt offerings, grain offerings, and drink offerings of all the people of the land.
Sprinkle on the altar all the blood of the burnt offerings and sacrifices. But I will use the bronze altar to seek guidance.”
And the
covert for the sabbath that they had built in the house, and the king’s entry
without, turned he from the house of the LORD for the king of Assyria.
And on account of the king of Assyria, he removed the Sabbath
canopy they had built in the temple and closed the royal entryway outside the house of the LORD.
Now the rest of the acts of
Ahaz which he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
As for the rest of the acts of
Ahaz, along

And
Ahaz slept with his fathers, and was buried
with his fathers in the city of David: and
Hezekiah his son reigned in his
stead.
And
Ahaz rested
with his fathers and was buried
with them in the City of David, and his son
Hezekiah reigned in his place.
And they rejected his statutes, and his covenant that he made
with their fathers, and his
testimonies which he
testified against them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and went after the heathen that were round about them, concerning whom the LORD had charged them, that they should not do like them.
They rejected His statutes and the covenant He had made
with their fathers, as well as the decrees He had given them. They pursued worthless idols and themselves became worthless, going after the surrounding nations that the LORD had commanded them not to
imitate.
Therefore the LORD was very
angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight: there was none left but the tribe of Judah only.
So the LORD was very
angry with Israel, and He removed them from His presence. Only the tribe of Judah remained,
With whom the LORD had made a covenant, and charged them saying, Ye shall not fear other gods, nor bow
yourselves to them, nor serve them, nor sacrifice to them:
For the LORD had made a covenant with the Israelites and commanded them, “Do not worship other gods or bow down to them; do not serve them or sacrifice to them.
But the LORD, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt with great power and a stretched out arm, him shall ye fear, and him shall ye worship, and to him shall ye do sacrifice.
Instead, worship the LORD, who brought you out of the land of Egypt with great power and an outstretched arm. You are to bow down to Him and offer sacrifices to Him.
And the covenant that I have made
with you ye shall not
forget; neither shall ye fear other gods.
Do not
forget the covenant I have made
with you. Do not worship other gods,
And the LORD was
with him; and he
prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not.
And the LORD was
with Hezekiah, and he
prospered wherever he went. He rebelled against the king of Assyria and refused to serve him.
And
Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to
Lachish, saying, I have
offended; return from me: that which thou puttest on me will I bear. And the king of Assyria appointed unto
Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.
So
Hezekiah king of Judah sent word to the king of Assyria at
Lachish, saying, “I have done wrong;
withdraw from me, and I will pay whatever you demand from me.” And the king of Assyria exacted from
Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.
At that time did
Hezekiah cut off the gold from the doors of the temple of the LORD, and from the pillars which
Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria.
At that time
Hezekiah stripped the gold
with which he had plated the doors and doorposts of the temple of the LORD, and he gave it to the king of Assyria.
And the king of Assyria sent
Tartan and Rabsaris and
Rab-shakeh from
Lachish to king
Hezekiah with a great host against Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. And when they were come up, they came and stood by the
conduit of the upper
pool, which is in the
highway of the fuller’s field.
Nevertheless, the king of Assyria sent the
Tartan, the Rabsaris, and the
Rabshakeh, along
with a great army, from
Lachish to King
Hezekiah at Jerusalem. They advanced up to Jerusalem and stationed themselves by the
aqueduct of the upper
pool, on the road to the
Launderer’s Field.
Now therefore, I pray thee, give pledges to my lord the king of Assyria, and I will deliver thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.
Now, therefore, make a
bargain with my master, the king of Assyria. I will give you two thousand horses—if you can put riders on them!
Am I now come up without the LORD against this place to destroy it? The LORD said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.
So now, was it apart from the LORD that I have come up against this place to destroy it? The LORD Himself said to me, ‘Go up against this land and destroy it.’”
Then said Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebna, and Joah, unto
Rab-shakeh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the
Syrian language; for we understand it: and talk not
with us in the Jews’ language in the ears of the people that are on the wall.
Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, along
with Shebnah and Joah, said to the
Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in
Aramaic, since we understand it. Do not speak
with us in Hebrew in the hearing of the people on the wall.”
But
Rab-shakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own
piss with you.
But the
Rabshakeh replied, “Has my master sent me to speak these words only to you and your master, and not to the men sitting on the wall, who are destined
with you to eat their own dung and drink their own
urine?”
Then
Rab-shakeh stood and
cried with a loud voice in the Jews language, and spake, saying, Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria:
Then the
Rabshakeh stood and called out loudly in Hebrew: “Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria!
Hearken not to
Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement
with me by a present, and come out to me, and then eat ye every man of his own vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his
cistern:
Do not
listen to
Hezekiah, for this is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace
with me and come out to me. Then every one of you will eat from his own vine and his own fig tree, and drink water from his own
cistern,
Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the
scribe, and Joah the son of
Asaph the recorder, to
Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of
Rab-shakeh.
And it came to pass, when king
Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself
with sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD.
On hearing this report, King
Hezekiah tore his clothes, put on
sackcloth, and entered the house of the LORD.
And he sent Eliakim, which was over the household, and Shebna the
scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered
with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.
And he sent Eliakim the palace
administrator, Shebna the
scribe, and the leading priests, all wearing
sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz
And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say to your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words which thou hast heard,
with which the servants of the king of Assyria have
blasphemed me.
who replied, “Tell your master that this is what the LORD says: ‘Do not be afraid of the words you have heard,
with which the servants of the king of Assyria have
blasphemed Me.
So
Rab-shakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria
warring against
Libnah: for he had heard that he was departed from
Lachish.
When the
Rabshakeh heard that the king of Assyria had left
Lachish, he
withdrew and found the king fighting against
Libnah.
By the messengers thou hast reproached the Lord, and hast said,
With the multitude of my
chariots I am come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of
Lebanon, and will cut down the tall
cedar trees thereof, and the choice
fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the lodgings of his borders, and into the forest of his
Carmel.
Through your servants you have
taunted the Lord, and you have said: “
With my many
chariots I have ascended to the heights of the mountains, to the remote peaks of
Lebanon. I have cut down its tallest cedars, the finest of its
cypresses. I have reached its
farthest outposts, the densest of its forests.
I have
digged and
drunk strange waters, and
with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of besieged places.
I have
dug wells and
drunk foreign waters.
With the soles of my feet I have dried up all the streams of Egypt.”
Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an
arrow there, nor come before it
with shield, nor cast a bank against it.
So this is what the LORD says about the king of Assyria: ‘He will not enter this city or shoot an
arrow into it. He will not come before it
with a shield or build up a siege
ramp against it.
So
Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp and
withdrew. He returned to
Nineveh and stayed there.
One day, while he was worshiping in the temple of his god
Nisroch, his sons
Adrammelech and Sharezer put him to the sword and escaped to the land of
Ararat. And his son Esar-haddon reigned in his place.
I
beseech thee, O LORD, remember now how I have walked before thee in truth and
with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And
Hezekiah wept sore.
“Please, O LORD, remember how I have walked before You faithfully and
with wholehearted devotion; I have done what was good in Your sight.” And
Hezekiah wept bitterly.
And the rest of the acts of
Hezekiah, and all his might, and how he made a
pool, and a
conduit, and brought water into the city, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
As for the rest of the acts of
Hezekiah, along
with all his might and how he constructed the
pool and the
tunnel to bring water into the city, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?
And
Hezekiah rested
with his fathers, and his son
Manasseh reigned in his place.
And he made his son pass through the fire, and observed times, and used enchantments, and dealt
with familiar spirits and wizards: he wrought much wickedness in the sight of the LORD, to
provoke him to anger.
He sacrificed his own son in the fire, practiced
sorcery and
divination, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did great evil in the sight of the LORD,
provoking Him to anger.
Because
Manasseh king of Judah hath done these abominations, and hath done wickedly above all that the
Amorites did, which were before him, and hath made Judah also to sin
with his idols:
“Since
Manasseh king of Judah has committed all these abominations, acting more wickedly than the
Amorites who preceded him, and
with his idols has caused Judah to sin,
Now the rest of the acts of
Manasseh, and all that he did, and his sin that he
sinned, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
As for the rest of the acts of
Manasseh, along
with all his accomplishments and the sin that he committed, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?
And
Manasseh slept with his fathers, and was buried in the garden of his own house, in the garden of Uzza: and Amon his son reigned in his
stead.
And
Manasseh rested
with his fathers and was buried in his palace garden, the garden of Uzza. And his son Amon reigned in his place.
Now the rest of the acts of Amon which he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
As for the rest of the acts of Amon, along with his accomplishments, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?
Howbeit there was no
reckoning made
with them of the money that was delivered into their hand, because they dealt faithfully.
But they need not account for the money put into their hands, since they work
with integrity.”
So Hilkiah the priest, and
Ahikam, and Achbor, and Shaphan, and Asahiah, went unto Huldah the
prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the
wardrobe; (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college;) and they communed
with her.
So Hilkiah the priest,
Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went and spoke to Huldah the
prophetess, the wife of Shallum son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, the keeper of the
wardrobe. She lived in Jerusalem, in the Second District.
Because they have
forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might
provoke me to anger
with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be
kindled against this place, and shall not be
quenched.
because they have
forsaken Me and burned incense to other gods, that they might
provoke Me to anger
with all the works of their hands. My wrath will be
kindled against this place and will not be
quenched.’
And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the people, both small and great: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which was found in the house of the LORD.
And he went up to the house of the LORD with all the people of Judah and Jerusalem, as well as the priests and the prophets—all the people small and great—and in their hearing he read all the words of the Book of the Covenant that had been found in the house of the LORD.
And the king stood by a
pillar, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments and his
testimonies and his statutes
with all their heart and all their soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people stood to the covenant.
So the king stood by the
pillar and made a covenant before the LORD to follow the LORD and to keep His commandments, decrees, and statutes
with all his heart and all his soul, and to carry out the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people entered into the covenant.
And the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the keepers of the door, to bring forth out of the temple of the LORD all the vessels that were made for
Baal, and for the
grove, and for all the host of heaven: and he burned them
without Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them unto
Bethel.
Then the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, the priests second in rank, and the doorkeepers to remove from the temple of the LORD all the articles made for
Baal, Asherah, and all the host of heaven. And he burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron and carried their ashes to
Bethel.
And he put down the
idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places round about Jerusalem; them also that burned incense unto
Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven.
Josiah also did away
with the
idolatrous priests ordained by the kings of Judah to burn incense on the high places of the cities of Judah and in the places all around Jerusalem—those who had burned incense to
Baal, to the sun and moon, to the constellations, and to all the host of heaven.
And he brought out the
grove from the house of the LORD,
without Jerusalem, unto the
brook Kidron, and burned it at the
brook Kidron, and stamped it small to powder, and cast the powder thereof upon the graves of the children of the people.
He brought the Asherah pole from the house of the LORD to the Kidron Valley outside Jerusalem, and there he burned it, ground it to powder, and threw its dust on the graves of the common people.
Nevertheless the priests of the high places came not up to the altar of the LORD in Jerusalem, but they did eat of the
unleavened bread among their brethren.
Although the priests of the high places did not come up to the altar of the LORD in Jerusalem, they
ate unleavened bread
with their fellow priests.
And he took away the horses that the kings of Judah had given to the sun, at the entering in of the house of the LORD, by the chamber of
Nathan-melech the
chamberlain, which was in the suburbs, and burned the
chariots of the sun
with fire.
And he removed from the entrance to the house of the LORD the horses that the kings of Judah had dedicated to the sun. They were in the court near the chamber of an official named
Nathan-melech. And
Josiah burned up the
chariots of the sun.
And he
brake in pieces the images, and cut down the groves, and filled their places
with the bones of men.
He
smashed the sacred pillars to pieces, cut down the Asherah poles, and covered the sites
with human bones.
And he said, Let him alone; let no man move his bones. So they let his bones alone, with the bones of the prophet that came out of Samaria.
“Let him rest,” said
Josiah. “Do not let
anyone disturb his bones.” So they left his bones undisturbed, along
with those of the prophet who had come from Samaria.
Moreover the workers
with familiar spirits, and the wizards, and the images, and the idols, and all the abominations that were
spied in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, did
Josiah put away, that he might perform the words of the law which were written in the book that Hilkiah the priest found in the house of the LORD.
Furthermore,
Josiah removed the mediums and spiritists, the household gods and idols, and all the abominations that were seen in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem. He did this to carry out the words of the law written in the book that Hilkiah the priest had found in the house of the LORD.
And like unto him was there no king before him, that turned to the LORD with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the law of Moses; neither after him arose there any like him.
Neither before nor after
Josiah was there any king like him, who turned to the LORD
with all his heart and
with all his soul and
with all his strength, according to all the Law of Moses.
Notwithstanding the LORD turned not from the fierceness of his great wrath,
wherewith his anger was
kindled against Judah, because of all the provocations that
Manasseh had
provoked him
withal.
Nevertheless, the LORD did not turn away from the
fury of His burning anger, which was
kindled against Judah because of all that
Manasseh had done to
provoke Him to anger.
Now the rest of the acts of
Josiah, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
As for the rest of the acts of
Josiah, along
with all his accomplishments, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?
And also for the innocent blood that he shed: for he filled Jerusalem
with innocent blood; which the LORD would not
pardon.
and also for the innocent blood he had shed. For he had filled Jerusalem
with innocent blood, and the LORD was unwilling to
forgive.
Now the rest of the acts of
Jehoiakim, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
As for the rest of the acts of
Jehoiakim, along
with all his accomplishments, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?
And it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came, he, and all his host, against Jerusalem, and pitched against it; and they built forts against it round about.
So in the ninth year of
Zedekiah’s reign, on the tenth day of the tenth month,
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem
with his entire army. They
encamped outside the city and built a siege wall all around it.
And they
slew the sons of
Zedekiah before his eyes, and put out the eyes of
Zedekiah, and bound him
with fetters of brass, and carried him to Babylon.
And they slaughtered the sons of
Zedekiah before his eyes. Then they put out his eyes, bound him
with bronze
shackles, and took him to Babylon.
And he burnt the house of the LORD, and the king’s house, and all the houses of Jerusalem, and every great man’s house burnt he with fire.
He burned down the house of the LORD, the royal palace, and all the houses of Jerusalem—every
significant building.
And all the army of the Chaldees, that were
with the captain of the guard,
brake down the walls of Jerusalem round about.
And the whole army of the Chaldeans under the captain of the guard broke down the walls around Jerusalem.
Now the rest of the people that were left in the city, and the fugitives that fell away to the king of Babylon,
with the
remnant of the multitude, did Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carry away.
Then Nebuzaradan captain of the guard carried into exile the people who remained in the city, along with the deserters who had defected to the king of Babylon and the rest of the population.
The two pillars, one sea, and the bases which Solomon had made for the house of the LORD; the brass of all these vessels was without weight.
As for the two pillars, the Sea, and the movable stands that Solomon had made for the house of the LORD, the weight of the bronze from all these articles was beyond measure.
The height of the one
pillar was eighteen cubits, and the
chapiter upon it was brass: and the height of the
chapiter three cubits; and the
wreathen work, and pomegranates upon the
chapiter round about, all of brass: and like unto these had the second
pillar with wreathen work.
Each
pillar was eighteen cubits tall. The bronze capital
atop one
pillar was three cubits high,
with a network of bronze pomegranates all around. The second
pillar,
with its network, was similar.
And Gedaliah
sware to them, and to their men, and said unto them, Fear not to be the servants of the Chaldees: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon; and it shall be well
with you.
And Gedaliah took an oath before them and their men,
assuring them, “Do not be afraid of the servants of the Chaldeans. Live in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will be well
with you.”
But it came to pass in the seventh month, that
Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, of the seed royal, came, and ten men
with him, and
smote Gedaliah, that he died, and the Jews and the Chaldees that were
with him at
Mizpah.
In the seventh month, however,
Ishmael son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, who was a member of the royal family, came
with ten men and struck down and killed Gedaliah, along
with the Judeans and Chaldeans who were
with him at
Mizpah.
And all the people, both small and great, and the captains of the armies, arose, and came to Egypt: for they were afraid of the Chaldees.
Then all the people small and great, together with the commanders of the army, arose and fled to Egypt for fear of the Chaldeans.
And he spake kindly to him, and set his throne above the throne of the kings that were with him in Babylon;
And he spoke kindly to
Jehoiachin and set his throne above the thrones of the other kings who were
with him in Babylon.
And afterward Hezron went in to the daughter of Machir the father of
Gilead, whom he married when he was
threescore years old; and she bare him Segub.
Later, Hezron
slept with the daughter of Machir the father of
Gilead. He had married her when he was sixty years old, and she bore to him Segub.
And he took Geshur, and
Aram,
with the towns of
Jair, from them,
with Kenath, and the towns thereof, even
threescore cities. All these belonged to the sons of Machir the father of
Gilead.
But Geshur and
Aram captured Havvoth-
jair, along
with Kenath and its sixty surrounding villages. All these were descendants of Machir the father of
Gilead.
And the sons of
Nadab; Seled, and Appaim: but Seled died
without children.
The sons of
Nadab: Seled and Appaim. Seled died
without children.
And the sons of Jada the brother of
Shammai; Jether and
Jonathan: and Jether died
without children.
The sons of Jada the brother of
Shammai: Jether and
Jonathan. Jether died
without children.
And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow.
Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.”
And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest
bless me indeed, and
enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be
with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not
grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.
And Jabez called out to the God of Israel, “If only You would
bless me and
enlarge my territory! May Your hand be
with me and keep me from
harm, so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted the request of Jabez.
These were the potters, and those that dwelt among plants and hedges: there they dwelt with the king for his work.
These were the potters who lived at Netaim and Gederah. They lived there in the service of the king.
And in the days of Saul they made war
with the Hagarites, who fell by their hand: and they dwelt in their tents throughout all the east land of
Gilead.
During the days of Saul they
waged war against the Hagrites, who were defeated at their hands, and they occupied the homes of the Hagrites throughout the region east of
Gilead.
The sons of
Reuben, and the Gadites, and half the tribe of
Manasseh, of
valiant men, men able to bear
buckler and sword, and to shoot
with bow, and skilful in war, were four and forty thousand seven hundred and
threescore, that went out to the war.
The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh had 44,760 warriors—
valiant men who carried the shield and sword, drew the bow, and were trained for battle.
And they made war with the Hagarites, with Jetur, and Nephish, and Nodab.
They
waged war against the Hagrites, as well as Jetur, Naphish, and Nodab.
And they were helped against them, and the Hagarites were delivered into their hand, and all that were
with them: for they
cried to God in the battle, and he was intreated of them; because they put their trust in him.
And because they
cried out to God in battle, they were helped against their enemies, and the Hagrites and all their allies were delivered into their hands. Because they put their trust in God, He answered their prayers.
And they
transgressed against the God of their fathers, and went a
whoring after the gods of the people of the land, whom God destroyed before them.
They were mighty men of
valor, famous men, and heads of their families. But they were unfaithful to the God of their fathers, and they
prostituted themselves
with the gods of the peoples of the land, whom God had destroyed before them.
